2023 Kentucky Derby
Mage won the 149th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday.
The 3-year-old chestnut colt, trained by Gustavo Delgado, edged out Two Phil’s, who crossed the line to finish in second place, and Angel of Empire finished third, in front of the over 150,000 fans in attendance.
Mage’s win came after heavily favored Forte was scratched from the race earlier in the day after a Kentucky Horse Racing Commission veterinarian found the horse had a bruised right front foot, Churchill Downs said.

2023 Kentucky Derby
I really like Forte, but I never like choosing the favorite, and now I'm glad I didn't, as he has been scratched. So, I think I'm going to go grey this year, with Tapit Trice as my first pick and Mott's Rocket Can as my long-shot.

Kentucky Derby Breakdown 5/6/23
A 30/1 exacta to kick off Oaks Friday for the Conductor had him out for blood. However, his water pistol came up empty the rest of the card. Onto the big day. This has been one of the strangest weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby the Conductor can remember. Four scratches and now a 19 horse field. Only Mr. Ductor can help us in a race like this, Let’s Ride. #1 Hit Show (30/1) – Exiting the…

We put in an offer on house #4 on Wednesday (saw 4 houses last Saturday). We’ll find out today if it was accepted. We were offer #12, so…yeah.
We’re going over later this afternoon to see a house we saw several weeks ago. And maybe another (small) one.
I’m feeling pessimistic, really. But it’s hard to feel too bad when the windows are open, spring is everywhere, the Kentucky Derby 🐎 is tomorrow tomorro
And there’s a Coronation too. 👑🇬🇧

As people watch the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, I ask that everyone please remember that NONE OF THOSE HORSES IS IN ANY WAY A FULLY MATURE ADULT HORSE!!
Their bodies, and especially their bones are still growing and developing. A horse's skeleton is not fully grown, fully matured until they are SIX. Yet most of these horses have been in rigorous training and are competing by age TWO. TWO!! That's like having ten-year-olds play professional sports and expecting them to perform the same as adults. Their bodies are not ready for that much strain and stress at these ages. They have not even reached their full height yet. And the spine is the last part of the skeleton to develop (doing so around age six). The only part of the horse finished (or nearly finished) growing at age two is the knees. The rest is being stressed, sometimes irreparably damaged, before it's even finished growing.
The reason they race and start so early? Because then owners and investors get their money sooner, and get more of it.
The welfare and long term health/quality of life of these defenseless animals is second (if that) to profits for people who already have too much money anyway.
Rich people fucking suck.

His image is all over the city he was named after, and he was the father of modern thoroughbred racing in America. A new book looks at #Lexington, the people around him, and his legacy. #Newbooks #netgalley #bookreview #ARCreview #BallantineBooks
The powerful true story of the champion Thoroughbred racehorse who gained international fame in the tumultuous Civil War–era South, and became the most successful sire in American racing history The early days of American horse racing were grueling. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A horse died Sunday after a race at Churchill Downs, making it the eighth fatality in recent weeks at the home of the Kentucky Derby.
Rio Moon “suffered a catastrophic injury to his left foreleg a few strides after the wire,” according to notes in the Equibase chart for the sixth race.
The 3-year-old colt ridden by Martin Garcia was euthanized, the chart said. Rio Moon was trained by Dale Romans and was winless in six career starts with earnings of $11,621.
Two horses were euthanized after being injured in races on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 6. Five others were euthanized after training and racing incidents at the track in the days leading up to the Derby.
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was indefinitely suspended by Churchill Downs during Derby week after two of his horses collapsed on the track and died. Kentucky racing officials scratched his Derby entry, Lord Miles, too.
I think that we should maybe just stop racing horses.
