Now feels like as good a time as any to remind people that you need to vote not just in the presidential elections but also for local elections, ballot measures, referendums, and such. These fascist politicians didn't appear out of nowhere. Greg Abbott started as a state trial judge, for fuck's sake.
Obviously there's other factors involved but this is not the time for "they're all corrupt so I won't vote for anyone" or "but local elections don't do much". Unless you're personally planning the revolution I don't want to hear anyone whining about how voting doesn't work.
Register to vote and fill out every bubble on that ballot like your life depends on it.

It's Purple Tuesday!
Purple Tuesday is an awareness day created by disabled CEO Mike Adams to highlight the lack of accessibility for disabled people in public spaces.
Although many retailers have in recent years made a conscientious effort to provide better, more inclusive experiences for disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people, their efforts so far only provide the bare minimum. It's commendable that a number of stores now have elevators installed, as well as wider aisles to accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility aids, but it should not have taken this long.
This year, London's MCM Expo provided autistic convention attendees with a designated space to recharge and recover from sensory overload. This is what inclusivity looks like.
Our rights are on the ballot. Vote to preserve them.
The late Judy Heumann spent decades fighting for our right to exist in public spaces. It's up to us to continue the fight.

Election Day Predictions: Harris vs. Trump
Election Day Anticipations Gail Collins: Well, Bret, tomorrow is the big day! Have you cast your vote yet? Bret Stephens: I prefer to vote on Election Day itself. However, a friend of mine recently voted at the Met Museum and reported that the line was excruciatingly long—taking hours, in fact. It was mostly women waiting. I’m predicting a significant victory for Kamala Harris here in Manhattan.…

My fellow Americans, although we weren't able to flip Mississippi (wasn't expecting much but a man can dream), we pulled off a huge victory for democracy in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia. We showed people what happens when you mess with people who really love this country. People can run their mouths and claim they love America, but their actions and policies reveal otherwise. We showed them what we think of them. This was especially true in Kentucky. They saw how powerful and useful Democratic rule is. A state as red as Kentucky realized they're better off with Democrats. And I'm sure other states will follow. This is a time of extreme uncertainty. However, one thing I'm certain of is that this country is in good hands. God bless the people of this country. God bless America

This is even worst than I expected. Our new president - a fascist - just said he would do everything he said he would do during the campaign even when people voted for him because, theoretically, he wouldn't do everything he said he would do.
I love my country and its people but to be honest, it's getting hard for me to understand why people voted for someone who's been saying he's willing to destroy our salary, our rights, our democracy... We're walking right into the abyss. I feel so hopeless.

Looking over the information about the school board candidates and wondering why every single woman is a conservative with some policy that has some scary implication.
I didn’t think I was going to have to vote “ooos! All white guys!” But they’re the only ones being endorsed by, like, LGBTQ groups and don’t have dark implications behind their their policy plans!
Like, I’m choosing between “parents rights to teach family values(TM)” and “Kids should be able to eat for free without caveats”.

Don’t Skip Election Day in 2023
It’s not a presidential or midterm year, but there are still a lot of important elections happening within the next month and it is still crucial that you vote in them. Many of these are local elections that can most directly impact your life and community. The people on the ballot this year are your mayors, city council members, and school board members. Some ballots will also have proposals for you to vote on, like whether you’re okay with raising taxes by 0.4% to pay for road repairs or something of that nature.
School boards are especially important in the era of unprecedented book bans. Please, if you value the freedom to read, if you value representation, diversity in literature, etc., show up to your local election. The absolute best tool we have to fight book bans is to make sure they don’t happen in the first place, and who is on the school board can be the deciding factor in whether a book gets removed. Check who’s running in your district to make sure the position goes to someone reasonable and not a Moms for Liberty bigot. Because I have no doubt that some of those will be running and they are banking on people not showing up or not knowing that an election is happening. Turnout for local elections is awful and it’s a big part of why there’s been so little change.
Mayors and city council members matter too. They have the power over things like rent control, basic income, universal broadband, public transit, local infrastructure, city budgets, libraries, parks, policing, disaster relief, and whether Confederate statues get removed. They can affect your life in ways that governors and congresspeople and even presidents can’t.
Local elections can be where your vote matters the most. There’s no electoral college to mess it up, and the amount of people who can vote in each one is so small that every vote really does count.
Early voting is going to start happening in a few weeks. If you haven’t registered, don’t know your status, don’t know the dates or your polling place or what’s required to vote, or if you don’t know what’s on your ballot, now is the time to find out. Look up your sample ballot and research each candidate to see where they stand on the issues.
Election Day in 2023 is every bit as important and high-stakes as Election Day in 2022 and 2024. And we all need to treat it that way.
