Without John Williams, bikes don't fly and neither do brooms in Quidditch matches nor do men in red capes. There is no Force, dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe.
- Steven Spielberg, AFI Lifetime Achievement Award speech for John Williams
The collaboration between John Williams and Steven Spielberg is probably the longest and most successful artistic relationship between a director and a composer in the history of cinema. The duo is synonymous of what means having a fruitful, honest and profound association between two people making films together. Calendar year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the very first encounter between Spielberg and Williams, which happened when the director was in preparation of his first feature film, The Sugarland Express; after being impressed by Williams’ work for such films as The Reivers and The Cowboys, the director decided he was the type of composer he was looking for. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.
Their roster includes some of the most successful and everlasting movies in the history of cinema: Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, but also such highly acclaimed dramas as Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and Lincoln, and most recently The Fablemans. The variety and diversity of their collaboration is balanced by a unified artistic vision that always celebrates humanity, finding the perfect synergy and constant inspiration in the work of each other and letting each other to be part of their own respective worlds. “John is my musical rewrite artist,” said Steven Spielberg, while Williams spoke of Spielberg as someone who “loves music, it is such a pleasure working with him. He comes in and I play him a theme, he is always very positive and enjoys it.”

Cholame, CA
James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American actor with a career that lasted five years. He is regarded as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant (1956).
Dean died in a car crash in 1955 and became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in East of Eden. He received a second nomination for his role in Giant the following year, making him the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of Golden Age Hollywood in AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars list.
On September 30, as the group [James Dean, Bill Hickman, Sanford Roth and Rolf Wütherich] was driving westbound on U.S. Route 466 (currently SR 46) near Cholame, California, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a 1950 Ford Tudor, driven by 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student Donald Turnupseed, was travelling east. Turnupseed made a left turn onto Highway 41 headed north, toward Fresno ahead of the oncoming Porsche. Dean, unable to stop in time, slammed into the passenger side of the Ford, resulting in Dean's car bouncing across the pavement onto the side of the highway. Dean's passenger, Wütherich, was thrown from the Porsche, while Dean was trapped in the car and sustained numerous fatal injuries, including a broken neck. Turnupseed exited his damaged vehicle with minor injuries.
An inquest placed fault for the accident entirely with Dean. There is a James Dean monument, financed by a Japanese businessman, in front of the former Cholame post office (which closed in 1994) and a restaurant (until its closure in 2022), one half-mile from the site of the accident.

What happened to Miss May? Ishtar (1987), where it all comes to an end (4/4)
“Ishtar shall rise again!”
Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman trying to tame their blind camel
After Mikey and Nicky, it took Elaine May a decade to be allowed to make another movie, and it only happened because she was backed by the successful movie star, producer, and director Warren Beatty. She had worked with him on the screenplays of Heaven Can Wait (1978) and Reds (1981). Dustin Hoffman also knew Elaine May, as she had worked as a script doctor on Tootsie (1982). Consequently, Columbia – owned at the time by Coca Cola – agreed to finance May’s new project about a duo of untalented singers (Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty) who go to Morocco, convinced that they will find success there when a mysterious woman (Isabelle Adjani) involves them in a geopolitical spiral.
Lyle Rogers (Warren Beatty) and Chuck Clarke (Dustin Hoffman) with their agent
The movie was to be a comedy starring two Oscar-winning serious actors. May cast against type, giving Hoffman the part of the womanizer and Beatty the role of the socially awkward singer. May was inspired by “Road” movies from the forties featuring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, where they embarked on comedic adventures in foreign lands. Once again, May gave the audience a killer opening scene, for which she is the best in the game. The first twenty minutes of Ishtar are incredibly funny (one can only wish it maintained this brilliance throughout), showing the duo as Simon and Garfunkel-esque aspirating songwriters trying to find inspiration in New York. This hilarious part is enhanced by absurdly great songs written by Paul Williams for the film.
Studios thought Ishtar would be an epic picture; instead they got a movie about two losers going to the Middle East and ending up battling against the CIA and USA’s imperialism to put a left-wing government in power, all set to deceptive songs for the audience. Needless to say, May’s humor was not widely understood. Shooting in the Sahara was a difficult operation. Ishtar became synonymous with fiasco in the ‘80s and was known as one of the greatest bombs in Hollywood history. Overall, Columbia lost $60 million (which may raise even more respect for May).
Hoffman, Adjani, and Beatty on set in Morocco
Starting to become a cult classic, Ishtar is often compared to Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1980) but it has still not been reappraised by critics. The VHS edition went out of print, and there has been no DVD edition. “Ishtar shall rise again!” is what Dustin Hoffman shouted when coming onstage at the AFI Life Achievement Award to honor Warren Beatty’s career, reclaiming the film’s legacy thirty-two years later.
Both because studios would not give her investments and because she felt done with Hollywood, May focused on other works. She turned to Broadway stages with The Waverly Gallery, for which she won a Tony Award, appeared as an actress in Woody Allen’s Crisis in Six Scenes (2016), and gave occasional hilarious speeches at events honoring Mike Nichols, for whom she continued to co-write screenplays.
youtube
Eventually, in 2022, May received an Honorary Academy Award. At 92, Elaine May is said to have a project for a new movie called Crackpot starring Dakota Johnson. Let’s hope it gets made.
Long live Miss May!

Lesley Lokko - the 2024 RIBA Royal Gold Medal Recipient
© Murdo McLeod. Image Courtesy of La Biennale Architettura 2021
Professor Lesley Lokko OBE is a renowned Ghanaian-Scottish architect, educator, and best-selling novelist. She is the Founder and Director of the African Futures Institute (AFI) in Accra, Ghana, which is an independent postgraduate school of architecture and public events platform. In December 2021, she was appointed as the Curator of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. In December 2022, she was awarded an OBE in the first New Year's Honors List by King Charles III, for her exceptional contributions to architecture and education. As an author, she has published 13 bestsellers.
She is the recipient of the 2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award and currently serves as a Visiting Professor at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, and a Visiting Full Professor at the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, University College Dublin. She is also a Trustee of the London-based Architecture Foundation and a Founding Member of the Council on Urban Initiatives, co-founded by LSE Cities, UN-Habitat, and UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose.
On the 18th of January 2024, the Royal Institute of British Architects announced that Professor Lesley Lokko had become the first African female to receive the prestigious Royal Gold Medal, which was established in 1848. She joins the ranks of Zaha Hadid and Yasmeen Lari, as the only women to have been awarded the medal since its inception.
“I hope that this award will also make it clear that the divisions that we inherit, that we construct, that we put upon ourselves between different aspects of our lives not that they don't matter but perhaps they're not the first place that we should be looking when we're thinking about change and about moving forward. So, I very much hope that this medal demonstrates that it's worth it to think differently. It’s worth it to go off piste or to go off the beaten track”. - Prof. Lesley
We at the AFA network hope that her final submission in the announcement video will inspire you on your path towards architecture.
