Billy Batson Week 2024 Use #billybatsonweek and #bb84week to participate!
This year marks the 84th anniversary of Billy Batson as Captain Marvel debuting in Whiz Comics #2, the first official cover-dated issue released February 1940. We're three years into this fan-run event - hopefully we'll have many more to come!
Day 1 ✦ August 11, 2024 Bearing the Bolt + Favorite Costume
Over the years, Captain Marvel has gone through many design changes depending on the era and artist. Let us know which of them you favor the most - or even come up with your own! Bearing the bolt can also mean many things aside from the aesthetic. Is the bolt a heavy thing to bear?
Day 2 ✦ August 12, 2024 On the Battlefield + Favorite Fight
From the Captain Marvel battle that made us hold our breath to the one that you think about constantly - which is your most memorable battlefield moment? Or when has Cap struggled and still persevered?
Day 3 ✦ August 13, 2024 The Rock of Eternity + At Home Base
The Rock of Eternity is a place of reverence as well as the place of Captain Marvel's origin. It's had its moments since the first appearance of it in comics, but most notably it is our hero's home base, and a place he can find refuge.
Day 4 ✦ August 14, 2024 The Perfect Pair + Favorite Duo
Captain Marvel (as well as Billy himself) have had many iconic team-ups over the years. His occasional one-on-one collaborations are among some of the most noteworthy of his career. Who is your favorite Captain Marvel partner, either from canon or from your most wanted dream team?
Day 5 ✦ August 15, 2024 Into the Elseworlds + Favorite AU
Captain Marvel's Elseworlds appearances always have impact, no matter the weight of his role. Pick one to explore, or perhaps an alternate universe of your own making.
Day 6 ✦ August 16, 2024 Domestic Bliss + Off-Duty Hours
We love every moment our hero is a hero, but even more so when Cap turns in for the day and Billy has his own time to shine. Whether it's an unassuming picnic day or a day-in-the-life of Billy Batson, the off-duty hours can be just as fulfilling.
Day 7 ✦ August 17, 2024 Holiest of Molies + Favorite Moment
Holy Moly! Can you pinpoint the very moment that Billy Batson compelled you the very first time? He's been on this planet for way over three-quarters of a century, so let's talk about his impact! This day can also be used as a free-for-all.
Although the prompts have been laid out, you are more than welcome to refer to previous years’ (2022, 2023) to choose ideas from! All prompts may also be interpreted in any way you like, however abstract. Any form of content is encouraged, from drawing, multi-media work, photos, graphics, writing, and anything else under the sun. There's no pre-requisites or rules to join except for keeping everything SFW. Posting late is more than acceptable, especially if you find these dates to be incompatible with your own schedule.
Feel free to post your writing in our collection. There is no closing date, so works may be posted beyond the event.

HOW DID I FIRST NOTICE "JIKOOK"?🤔
Jimin & Jung Kook
On my Tumblr profile, I have stated that I am an OT7-loving, Jimin-biased, JiKook-observing fan. People familiar with KPop know that many fans commonly use a standard naming convention, where they combine parts of 2 or more names in order to identify the people being discussed. The term JiKook stands for Jimin (JM) and Jung Kook's (JK) pairing. I had not planned to post on this topic, but the surprise filming of, and the coming release of, the "Are You Sure?" travel series, starring Jimin & Jung Kook, inspired my decision.
Regardless of the unusual fandom arguments about Jimin and Jung Kook's interactions, there are a few descriptions about them that cannot be denied. For example, they are both from Busan. They both debuted in the same KPop band (BTS). They are the only 2 members who are in both the vocal and dance lines. They are friends, and they are close. I will not give attention to any denial of those descriptors whatsoever. I am convinced that the amount of footage & information provided by the members and the company settles any disagreements about items like those, without question. Any other label, name, or category you put on their relationship is up to personal interpretation until or unless they ever decide to directly define it for themselves. I have my own interpretation based on what I have gathered, but it is up to each person to determine their own view in light of the lack of confirmation.  And we all don't have to agree - or argue about it.
Are there other close relationships within BTS? Of course.  But something drew my attention toward this pair specifically. In spite of the introduction above, the purpose of this post came about when one day I realized I had never identified for myself what initially caused me to see, then become intrigued by, JiKook’s bond in particular. So I thought back and tried to remember the moment that captured my attention enough to watch them more closely. After thinking for a bit, I realized it happened during one of the first nonperformance events I ever saw.
I have explained in My BTS Experience posts that my sister introduced me to BTS but through performances mostly.  We watched many performances for a good length of time whenever we were together, but I didn’t venture out to view them on my own at that time.   At this point of observation, Jimin was already the member I leaned toward and tended to observe more often than the others. However, I really liked all of them and felt the group was interesting and exceptionally talented.
One day my sister unusually pulled up a BTS nonperformance event that had just occurred. It was the Festa 2022 dinner or what I like to call the Shock & Awe Dinner. I had never seen a Festa, so my sister explained that it was an annual event that occurred every June at the time of their anniversary in order to celebrate & reflect on the past, present, and future. By this point, I knew each of the guys' names and ages as well as a little of their stories and roles within the group. My sister had only told me they were a very close group, and they were all good friends. From what I had seen up to that point in performances, that bore out to be true.
On this day the guys were eating while in conversation.  True to form, they reminisced about the past, considered the present, but most significantly revealed the future. As it turned out, they were headed into a hiatus due to having to (choosing to?) enlist in the military for their mandatory service - except the audience didn’t know that reason yet and were stunned by the revelation of a hiatus.
The “Shock & Awe” came from the surprise announcement as well as the emotional tone of the event. While they ate, they explained that they would be taking a break to explore solo projects and life itself but also promised to come back together with gained experience and knowledge [See my BTS Solo Chapter series posts]. In addition to the shared information, there was an undercurrent of emotions, as if there were many unspoken sentiments. The members cried and made somewhat cryptic comments. It was very emotional and genuine. It drew me in, and I was now rather curious about the group - beyond their performances - and about what was going on.
So when did I notice JiKook? Well, during the dinner (Link set to 5:00 mark), as the group was still eating and talking about their current activities that had yet to be announced or released, Suga brought up Jimin working on his solo album. Suga said he had heard one of JMs songs. JHope (real name Hoseok) mentioned he also had heard his song. [Strangely, neither of them said it was good or they liked it. Note: JMs album ended up being a huge success. Re: Jimin bias 😉]  While JM quickly clarified it was not the same song, JK - the youngest of the group - abruptly asked JM why he hadn’t played the songs for him yet. JM responded in playful defense that he could play his songs for everyone. JK stated, “I’m so upset!” in sort of a loud sing-song tone. RM added fuel to the fire and declared that JHope was always number 1 to JM. You could tell RM was trying to get JKs goat [tease him]. But why? JM put his hand to his head and leaned back briefly as if in a moment of anguish with a smile and a shake of his head “no”. JHope even shook his head no and waved off RMs comment to assure that statement was untrue. It is well known that JHope and Jimin, the long-term roommates, are very close. Their unproblematic rooming situation was even mentioned during that meal. RM continued, “We’re all 2nd to JHope.” JK again shouted, “I’m so upset!”  JM explained aloud that JHope happened to be at the office and that was why he had heard the song. JK exclaimed, “So upset!” {By now my brow was wrinkled in amusement.} Strangely, JK was smiling a little and even gave a little chuckle. JM explained he had invited everyone to come see him work. Jk again, “So upset!” 🤭 He still wore a small smile. Suga offered an explanation that JM gets embarrassed when showing his work. JK then stated that JM should apologize “Go on! Say you’re sorry.” which JM immediately did with a chuckle but somewhat serious! Overall, I was like, “What?” 😳 And this was within the first 10 minutes of the meal!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
That seemed like an odd exchange based on how those few members had interacted. I wondered why the youngest was so “upset” about not hearing the songs when others had not mentioned they had or had not heard them either. I also wondered why the youngest felt he was obliged to have heard JMs songs and why he was demanding an apology from his elder and moreover why this elder accepted the demand and actually immediately apologized to the younger. What obligation did these 2 have toward each other? There also seemed to be an unexplained, playful reason for the exchange.  Was it scolding or teasing or both? But also from a younger member toward an older person in hierarchical (age conscious) South Korea? This definitely rang a bell for me. 🤔
Another less conspicuous, JiKook-specific event happened soon after (set to 16:50 mark).  I only noticed it after rewatching the dinner a few times. (Yes, I was so fascinated that I watched the entire dinner multiple times back to back. Little did I know that this was foretelling for my future as an eventual, devoted BTS fan.) The delay in recognizing this JiKook situation was because the subtle exchange did not occur in the same frame. It occurred while the group was discussing their new separate residences after having lived together for so long.  When JKs new home came up, JM and JK conspicuously made eye contact for what seemed to be about the topic of conversation. JK seemed amused, but I couldn’t quite read JMs expression. I only remember him later wondering aloud about how much of this footage would be able to be aired. (Click & expand to read dialogue.)
Tumblr media
The photos above are from a slide in my personal slideshow that I created to understand all the JiKook information I eventually viewed out of order. The two pictures at the bottom were enlarged and put side by side, but they are not manipulated to show something that didn’t happen. They are showing what actually was happening at the same time but in separate frames. Watch the actual, official footage and see (Link is set to the 16:50 mark). The pictures were included in this way to reveal their actions in one space, so you can see they were looking at each other while the other members spoke about JKs house and his multiple mattresses.😆 JM even did a slight twitch of his eyebrow with the eye contact.  The pictures right above that happened in reverse order, but I switched them so you could see the body language occurring simultaneously as this conversation played out. This is why it took me a while to notice the exchange. This too made me think, “What is happening with these two?”
And that’s how I first noticed JiKook.  Then down the JiKook rabbit hole I went…🙂
Feel free to share your JiKook moment too, and watch "Are You Sure?" travel series on Disney+, starting August 8th.

this was posted by @skelstudio on instagram!!
transcript underneath!
In November of 2021 soon after publishing the Release Trailer of the MADNESS: Project Nexus game on Steam, developers Matt Jolly and Michael Swain expressed interest in financing the next live action Madness endeavor.
At first, we at Skel Studio thought of making a short film, but it fell short of servicing the grandeur of the Madness universe. Instead, we proposed a Cinematic Story Trailer of their game. With much enthusiasm. Matt and Michael green-Lit us to begin in February of 2022
The idea was to make a trailer for the game, but in the style of an event movie trailer. Not only would this directly promote the game itself, but it would allow us to push Madness further into another medium. A cinematic one
With that, we are thrilled to pull back the curtain and invite the fans to attend our in-person premiere of the Madness: Project Nexus Cinematic Trailer on November 28th, 2022 in North Hollywood, CA
Tickets are now available on eventbrite.com and grant you access to the screening of the trailer, a behind the scenes mini-doc look at production, and will offer the fans a chance to meet the cast, crew, and the creator of Madness Combat himself, Krinkels (Visit the eventbrite page for more details )
The trailer will make it's online debut five days later, on December 3rd; with SKEL STUDIO Patreon supporters having access to the trailer a day early on December 2nd
We are proud to cap off the 20 year anniversary of Madness with such a momentous occasion.
Sincerely,
-Producer Hans van Harken & Director Chase Langley

What Girls' Generation left for modern women and K-Pop
Their 15th anniversary commemorative promotion is a historical event unrelated to music chart rankings.
Girls' Generation is a group that has challenged stereotypes about girl groups, female celebrities, and women's organizations. Furthermore, their return demonstrates that K-pop and its management system have advanced to the next level. Whether you like Girls' Generation or not, watching their comeback activities in 2022 is like witnessing a historical event.
Girls' Generation first debuted in 2007. Then, in 2017, several members left SM Entertainment. It was regarded as a de facto disbandment, but the members stated that they were only focusing on individual activities, leaving room for full-team activities to take place at any time as long as there is an appropriate reason. People would have dismissed it as an empty promise made solely to sustain their fandom if it had come from any other group, but Girls' Generation were different. Girls' Generation was such a successful group that they were all treated as top stars, with no member falling out during group activities (era), fueling rumors of fierce competition within the group. Even after their agencies changed, they demonstrated their friendship by regularly gathering in small groups to create content or support each other's activities. It was also stated unequivocally that there was no disagreement or resentment with the original agency. It was a move that dispelled the stereotype that women's organizations are full of envy, jealousy, ploys, and amateurism, and that the entertainment industry fosters such traits. Girls' Generation was not a group that emphasized girl crush through music or styling concepts, but it was a group that inspired modern women by demonstrating that high-level professionalism and femininity do not conflict with the members' histories and relationships.
Their relationship was not strong from the start of their career, as they frequently stated. There were fights behind the scenes, and they had to adjust to each other, but when they stood on stage, Girls' Generation smiled perfectly, as they always did. As a result, industry officials praised SM's training system and the members' professionalism. Meanwhile, they evolved into artists capable of speaking for themselves. The fact that a girl group has been active for 10 years while maintaining friendship (between members) and commerciality is an unprecedented phenomenon. Girls' Generation's fandom also expanded beyond admiring the group. They grew up together, and as they experienced social life on their own, they were able to make educated guesses and appreciate the time and effort Girls' Generation members have put in.
There are two main reasons why successful K-Pop groups that have broken up cannot reunite. It is common for a member to be kicked out after causing some trouble, and the next common case is that some members are significantly more successful than others, so group promotion is no longer necessary. However, as many as eight members of the Girls' Generation have built successful careers in their respective positions. There are four leading actors in movies and dramas, and they are all active as solo singers, MCs, advertising models, and musical actors. None of the members returned because they had hung up on and missed Girls' Generation's glory days. They understand the meaning of the Girls' Generation brand to the music industry and their fans as top stars who each have a voice and the ability to produce on their own, then come together again to complete it. This would be an excellent counterargument to the popular belief that K-Pop idols are merely industrial products rather than artists. SM's attitude of support also demonstrates the maturity of recognizing idol groups as resources of the fan community, rather than a temporary profit product of the agency. With the return of members who have also achieved success in other fields, you can feel proud that idols are not just a young clown act, but a vital part of the Korean cultural industry that is completed with hard work and professional consciousness. There is no better example to explain the state of K-Pop in 2022.
The music video for Girls' Generation's 15th anniversary song, Forever 1>, reflects each member's current image and then develops into a plot in which they make a stage (performance) together. At the same time, it included a tribute to their debut song, Into the New World>. Of course, there is no better gift for Girls' Generation fans than this. But there's more to it than that. Assume you are a fan of an idol group that is currently at its peak or has recently debuted. Can you imagine them being better in 15 years? Girls' Generation represents a new ideal for K-Pop groups. This is something no other group has ever done. This alone is deemed sufficient reason to be excited about Girls' Generation's return.

The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION — TOMORROW X TOGETHER: A review
Tumblr media
Published Monday, February 13th, 2023 — The story of Peter Pan has been a beloved children’s fairy tale for many years and has been told and retold in a plethora of ways—but never quite like this.
Introduction
Big Hit Music, formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment, under HYBE Labels (or HYBE Corporation) has a well-established reputation for storytelling through music. There are entire universes contained in the very fabric of their songs, birthing entire books and Webtoon series (see: BTS’s 花樣年華 The NOTES and 7FATES: CHAKHO; TXT’s THE STAR SEEKERS; and ENHYPEN’s DARK MOON: THE BLOOD ALTAR). Elements of these stories are presented through the artists’ music videos and, when watched in a certain order, help the viewer connect the dots and understand what the music and concepts are trying to convey. Because KPOP is an industry that relies heavily on concepts, continuous storylines are not necessarily common, although some groups may try to tell a story within the frame of one music video or a series of music videos released for a particular album. However, Big Hit Music has, much like with their older labelmates, BTS, given TXT a rich and immersive universe that flows from album to album, spanning the eras in a way that especially showcases the group’s growth and maturity into young men.
A Brief History of TXT’s Discography
When TOMORROW X TOGETHER debuted as a group on March 4th, 2019, the members were still young boys—as the oldest, Yeonjun was still months short of twenty; and Hueningkai, the youngest, was sixteen. They began their journey with a fresh and youthful concept highlighted by bright colors and graphics, debuting with “어느 날 머리에서 뿔이 자랐다 (CROWN)” and “Blue Orangeade”, which presented a strong first impression and helped lay the foundation for their spots as leaders of fourth generation KPOP. Now, coming up on the fourth anniversary of their debut date, they have covered a variety of themes along the vein of growing up—the blissful ignorance of youth, isolation from peers, love and heartbreak—and this latest comeback presents the darker, more seductive side of leaving adolescence behind.
The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION ties back to a similar naming convention for their previous series of albums, the first of which includes their debut release The Dream Chapter: STAR (2019), The Dream Chapter: MAGIC (2019), and The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY (2020); and the second of which includes The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE (2021) and The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE (2021). minisode 2: Thursday’s Child (2022)—part of another series that also includes minisode1 : Blue Hour (2020)—laid the groundwork for a seamless transition from the sadness and heartbreak explored in The Chaos Chapter series to whatever the next release would have in store. The title track of Thursday’s Child, “Good Boy Gone Bad”, demonstrated how heartbreak can turn into the kind of anger that changes a person for the worst—into someone who they or those around them can no longer recognize—and 2023 brought to light the next sequence of events for our five Lost Boys.
Teasing The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION
With a title like The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION, there is little room to misunderstand what is about to happen next. Currently at age 23 (Yeonjun), 22 (Soobin), 21 (Beomgyu), 21 (Taehyun), and 20 (Hueningkai), TXT is entering the period of young adulthood, where there are plenty of complex emotions, interesting sensations, and new experiences to be had. In the concept trailer released for TEMPTATION prior to the EP’s drop, the visual imagery immediately reminded fans of Peter Pan, showing the five boys moving through a window into a new world. There is a narrator who makes references to Wendy, Peter, and learning how to fly; and the language used made the concept quite clear and easily established expectations for the direction of the quintet’s next release while also showcasing the group’s dancing. The concept trailer was then followed by a preview of the EP’s tracks, which further reinforced the storyline previously presented. I didn’t need to hear the songs in their full capacity to know that this was a darker, more sensual take on the classic Peter Pan tale—which I will delve into deeper later in this review.
“Sugar Rush Ride” MV
Heading the group’s promotions is the title track “Sugar Rush Ride”. Preceded by two teasers (one | two), the music video takes some of the more traditional elements of Peter Pan’s Neverland and twists them into a Garden of Eden-like setting, enhanced by psychedelic effects meant to mimic ecstasy or euphoria, or the sensations of leaving one’s body. The video begins with the five members waking up on a beach before moving onto different locations, including an open field, an enchanting yet slightly sinister forest, a gorgeous waterfall, a cave full of butterflies, and an opulent setting dressed up by a tree with multicolored foliage. They return to the beach at the end, ready to leave this magical world.
On its own, the visuals tell the story quite well: five boys arrive in Neverland, where they stay and play for a while, seduced by the fantasy it offers. Loss of innocence is an archetype typically associated with growing up; and the temptations of Neverland are too great for them to resist. Furthermore, as many fans took notice, it is the most scantily dressed that Big Hit has allowed them to be since their debut, especially for Hueningkai, who as the youngest has a history of being covered up as much as possible when the older members have been in more revealing attire. All visual aspects of this concept point to a clear maturity that hasn’t really been tapped into prior to TEMPTATION—and the members lean into it quite well.
An Analysis of The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION
The EP, consisting of five songs, flows like a story all on its own and for optimal enjoyment should be listened to in its designated order. The reason why I say that no one has really told the story of Peter Pan like this before reveals itself as soon as the first few notes of the record play—because no one has ever stopped to consider that maybe Peter Pan isn’t the hero—maybe he’s the villain.
TEMPTATION opens with “Devil by the Window”, an English track that refers to Peter Pan as not only the “devil by the window” but also “a wolf in sheep clothes”. In the most popular retelling of the story, Disney’s version, Wendy tells her younger brothers stories about Peter Pan’s adventures and heroic deeds; and getting to fly to Neverland with him is viewed as an amazing opportunity. However, “Devil by the Window” describes Peter Pan as a sinister figure in the night waiting to lure TXT away to Neverland, which is less of a paradise for children and more like an awful ride you can’t get off of. The brunt of the message is contained in the chorus: “I met the devil by the window, traded my life/Temptation touched my tongue, spread the wings of desire/He’s whispering, ‘Give up, don’t you put up a fight’/Said the devil by the window, ‘Dream on, dream on, good night”. In fact, the language of the song paints an image of Peter Pan that is quite similar to the serpent in the Garden of Eden.
The soundscape of “Devil by the Window” creates a richly seductive palette that weaves it way throughout the rest of the record. When paired with the gritty bassline and the breathiness with which the members infused their voices, the lyrics help set the scene for our Korean Lost Boys to make their journey to Neverland. The most interesting part is the end, which is rather abrupt after a tempo change that feels like floating right before a sudden drop, which might be interpreted as an indication that the flight from home to Neverland has ended.
TXT chose to perform “Devil by the Window” alongside “Sugar Rush Ride” during their promotional circuit; and the choreography helps further the storytelling aspect of TEMPTATION in a way that would leave the story slightly lacking if it were to have gone without.
There are certain expectations for title tracks in the KPOP industry and most groups choose to perform their most so-called “fun” or general public-friendly songs. “Sugar Rush Ride” is, in some ways, “Devil by the Window” repackaged as a title track with elements of pop music sprinkled on top to disguise the utter debauchery that it really is—and I really don’t mean that in a negative way. Sonically, the structure of the verses are more pop leaning, while the chorus falls back into a soundscape more similar to its predecessor. It incorporates the same kind of breathy singing, as well as some beautiful falsettos adorned throughout that add a beautiful layer of vocal color to the song. The sighs that punctuate the chorus really add to the seduction that they established in “Devil by the Window” and I am truly so obsessed with the hidden vocals, which create some amazing contrast between them and the members’ voices.
Lyrically, “Sugar Rush Ride” describes an experience of heightened sensation— hence the sugar rush, which feels like a euphemism for substance use, supported by Hueningkai’s lines “You’re so addictive/내 혈관은 (translated: my veins) full of sweets”—although sugar is also used as another name for desire. Now that TXT are in Neverland, Peter Pan is trying to convince them to stay, enticing them with whatever he is giving them to produce the sugar rush. They’re still aware that he can’t be trusted; Taehyun’s lines in the refrain, “꿈에 데려가는/침대맡에 liar”, translate to “the liar at [my] bedside who takes me into [the] dream”*, indicating that they know what he’s trying to do but they’re buying into it anyway. They also continue to refer to him as the devil; and during the post-chorus, which moves at a faster pace established in the second iteration of the chorus, there’s an acknowledgement: “You’re a bad liar/What are you doing to me (what did you do to me), sugar?”* Again, much like the story of the Garden of Eden, having previously not known desire, the Lost Boys are finding that they can’t get enough of it and the sensation is overwhelming.
The Kulture Study by Form of Therapy, my favorite KPOP reaction channel, pointed out in their review of the song that after the sugar rush comes a crash, something that I agree with. Exactly when that crash will come and what shape it will take is still yet to be seen at this point in the album—which brings us to the next track.
“Happy Fools” sits right smack dab in the middle of the EP, a brighter, more carefree song that describes wanting to stay in a state of blissful ignorance in spite of what it would mean for them if they did. Coi Leray’s verse adds a fresh-faced playfulness and an additional layer of “not a care in the world” vibes; and the members settle into their short-lived period of contentment before being forced to face the reality of their situation. You shouldn’t let the sound of the song deceive you; the title and the lyrics make it very clear that they know that they’re on borrowed time.
Tinnitus is a condition in which one may experience a ringing or buzzing noise in one or both ears, whether constantly or intermittently. With that in mind, “돌멩이가 되고 싶어 (Tinnitus (Wanna be a rock))” doesn’t carry the kind of unpleasant quality you might expect based on the title; rather, it is a soft, sensual track that takes influence from Latin beats. It’s definitely a tie with “Farewell, Neverland” for my favorite song on the EP, its dreamy instrumentals and vocal colors making it not so much a dance track as it is a song that gets your body moving. It’s short and sweet but describes both a longing for one to be more than they are and an admission that things didn’t happen the way they wanted them to. The lyrics do mention tinnitus both explicitly and implicitly, sometimes as a “deafening empty sound” or a “daze”—and more than the underlying layer of self-deprecation, it carries a more deeply rooted disillusionment. In other words, the enchantment of Neverland has been broken.
Following that train of thought, TEMPTATION ends with “Farewell, Neverland”. The Korean title is “네버랜드를 떠나며”, which translates more closely to “Leaving Neverland”*. Matching up with the title, the song contains plenty of imagery that ties it to the Peter Pan story, including the lines and words used such as “Boys don’t grow up”, “endless flying”, and “my Peter Pan”. If “Devil by the Window” and “Sugar Rush Ride” are more about Peter Pan himself, “Farewell, Neverland” is, obviously, more about Neverland. They call it a “paradise full of lies” and say that it is “no home”, indicating that whatever they came to Neverland searching for, they didn’t find it; and whatever temptation was presented, it ultimately wasn’t enough to make them stay. However, our Lost Boys speak of Neverland more fondly than they spoke of Peter Pan at the beginning of the EP, calling it “my love”. Paired with the acoustic guitar and Latin-influenced instrumentals similar to “Tinnitus”, it certainly does seem like a rather romantic goodbye, if not a little bittersweet.
Conclusion
The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION is, as TXT’s work always is, a solid album. It presents a new side of the five young men that ties in with them growing up. The KPOP industry is often unkind to older groups, placing more favor with groups that maintain a youthful image; and while TXT are by no means old, their decision to fully delve into the processing of maturing into adulthood so explicitly in their music while also embracing sensuality that very carefully toes the line of propriety is to be respected and commended. As I mentioned previously, the EP tells a story and I would not recommend listening to the songs out of order. Interestingly, it splits quite evenly, with “Devil by the Window” and “Sugar Rush Ride” forming a pair and “돌멩이가 되고 싶어 (Tinnitus)” and “ 네버랜드를 떠나며 (Farewell, Neverland)” forming another with “Happy Fools” bridging the gap between them. Now, having gotten a taste of what an older, more grown up TXT is capable of, I can’t wait to see what they show us next.
Genius Lab USA Rating: We go up like the moon, [...] get it poppin’ like balloons. We gon party every day living like some happy fools doing what we wanna do.

Interview with LYSM x SACHIKO (FLiP) | Their first mini album ∞ shows a fresh new side, with SACHIKO’s feelings entrusted in the five members (October 26th, 2022) [Natalie Interview Translation]
Original Interview
Tumblr media
LYSM’s first mini album “∞” has been released. The idol group that celebrated their 1st anniversary in August of this year, LYSM. In their first mini album “∞” you can catch a glimpse at LYSM’s various sides, from pleasant pop numbers to live-like upbeat songs, compositions of various tastes have been recorded. To commemorate the release of “∞”, Ongaku Natalie has interviewed LYSM. We also met with SACHIKO (FLiP), who has worked on many of LYSM’s songs, including ones from the mini album like “Disconnection Code”, “BABY BABY”, and “One Room Parade”. We talked about her impressions of the 5 members and her thoughts about LYSM. Interview / Words: Nakanishi Kyuu Photography: Oshiro Tameki Translation: me :3

A 2022 supported by “Disconnection Code”
— It’s a bit early to summarize the year, but as the release of your first album “Love You So Much” kicked off 2022, what kind of year has it been for LYSM?
Tōmine Akari: To start, it was a big year. Right after our album’s release, each of us got covid one after another. During the most important time for us, we had to cancel and postpone various events and lives. With that timing, not being able to work was a bit tough for us mentally.
Kuon Maria: Since it was the timing of “LYSM starts now!”
Amabe Rinka: We weren't even able to do a live at Shimokitazawa Shangri-La, which was the venue of our debut live. But at the tour final of our next tour (“LYSM 1st ONEMAN TOUR REVENGE ~Digital Single ‘Disconnection Code’ Release Tour”, held from April to June), we were able to do one again at Shangri-La, which was the live this year that has left the most impressions.
Akari: Before that tour, in addition to the streaming release of “Disconnection Code”, we held four consecutive days of free lives in Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi, and Tokyo. It was pretty tiring with that kind of schedule, but it left a lot of impressions because of that. Now there’s a lot of new fans, I think it was really an event that left a memory that we have the power to get fans.
Ichimiya Emma: We had the tour and regular lives and various things kept going at a fairly quick pace, so I felt a chaotic “oh no, oh no” feeling as I was thinking of how to maintain this state of mind. But thanks to “Disconnection Code” I felt like “alright, we can do this song at a one-man!”
Tumblr media
LYSM
— As your free time was spent thinking about all the things you should do and you couldn’t sort out your feelings, “Disconnection Code” became a key point for your image, right?
Akari: That’s right.
Emma: For sure, it feels like the song itself has become really special to us.
SACHIKO (FLiP): I’m glad!
Akari: Since the melody until now had a totally different feeling, can it be said that singing the song is like playing the role of the protagonist in a video game? …That could be said about the entire mini album. I think “playing a role” may have become one theme of the mini album. On stage, we each play our own parts and I think that’s really important in terms of creating the best performances. I feel like it’s been a year in which we noticed that.
Did you entrust LYSM with songs you wanted to sing?
— Since SACHIKO, who has written many of the lyrics and music for LYSM, is here today as well, it’s a great opportunity to ask: Why is SACHIKO so involved with LYSM?
SACHIKO: Is that right? (laughs) Why have I been so involved with them until now… Originally, during the time I was doing lots of lives, we had many taibans and tours with bands LYSM’s company president, Kabumoto Tetsu, had managed, so we were already acquainted. After that time, when I had stopped my band activities and my work as a musician multiplied, I had tweeted “I write really good songs, someone please let me write for them,” immediately I got a DM from him (laughs). That was how it all started. As it was right when LYSM was being formed, it was like fate. I thought I had to do my absolute best.
— So you confronted it a little differently from “simply providing music to an artist”?
SACHIKO: Yes, the LYSM team’s order gave me quite a bit of creative freedom; they only requested I stick to the emotional theme of ‘I want to convey these feelings to fans'. Since they entrusted me with the specifics of the words and shape of the melody, these songs were really easy to write. Also, the group’s approach to music is very honest and sincere, I really feel there’s overlap between their approach and mine when I was in a band. So, I have a feeling that I can honestly say that if I were in a band now, these are the kinds of songs I would be writing.
Tumblr media
From left, Tsukishiro Seina, SACHIKO, Tōmine Akari
— Since you say that, for you LYSM is like a part of yourself?
SACHIKO: Ah, yes. I think it’s just like that.
Akari: Yay!
SACHIKO: It’s like I give them the kinds of songs I’d like to sing myself. There’s a great sense of ‘entrusting’. Like the song “Hanare Banare” from their 1st album was originally a demo I had made just as my band went on hiatus. I made it thinking “if I’m ever in a band again, I want to do this kind of song”, but I gave it to them.
Rinka: I’ve told SACHIKO before, but I really love ‘Hanare Banare’! The recording overlapped just as a friend had left to study abroad, so I felt like my situation and the lyrics were synchronized… (moved to tears)
SACHIKO: When you told me that story before, I also cried. And just like that, while entrusting them with my feelings, I always consciously write melodies, lyrics, expressions, and messages in which each of them can shine.
Analysis of each LYSM member according to SACHIKO
— SACHIKO, what kind of vocalists do you see each of the five members as?
Akari: I’d like to hear!
SACHIKO: Hmm… to start, Akari is definitely the “song pillar”. I think only she can create stinging tension in a song. This may be a clumsy way to put it, but I think since she’s the type of vocalist who really appeals to fans who prefer “lifespan shortening”-like emotional rock, I want her to maintain her unwavering self confidence without comparing herself to others. As that’s something you can’t do even if you wanted to.
Akari: I’m so happy I could cry. I might’ve cried a bit (laughs). Since I’m most aware of the ‘emotional’ aspect, I’m really so happy SACHIKO recognizes that too!
SACHIKO: As for Emma, I understood her when I watched a live MC, she’s very natural
Emma: (Laughs)
SACHIKO: I think comparing that naturalness to others is harmless, as she luckily relieves the tension in a song. Like even though Akari’s singing creates a stinging feeling, Emma singing just one line in between that suddenly relieves the tension just like that. I think she has that kind of position in the group, I really think she’s a vocalist who has a stress-free quality to her voice.
Emma: I’ve always thought my singing had no personality, like no matter how much I practiced, I wasn’t able to get lines, so I wondered many times “where should my voice be?”… It was a bit of a relief to be told I have such a role.
Tumblr media
From the top, Amabe Rinka, Kuon Maria, Ichimiya Emma
SACHIKO: Don’t worry, we all have roles to play.
Emma: (With tears in her eyes) thank you… I’ll do my best.
SACHIKO: As for Seina… recently I saw Akari say on Twitter “Is there not just one song pillar anymore?” I definitely think they are the two top pillars, but I think they’re opposite types of pillars. In contrast to the emotional Akari, Seina is cold, not emotional. That’s not to say she has no substance- rather, she has no bad thoughts, that her innocence goes straight to the heart. So I also wondered if that’s why her member color is white. Seina’s the youngest out of the members, right?
Tsukishiro Seina: I am.
SACHIKO: And since she’s the youngest, I think she’s a vocalist who can express the innocent-like parts. That might be the case when deciding the line distribution too… The company president (Kabumoto) is the one deciding that, not me, but I think she has that kind of innocence where she fits right into the not too emotional and not too cute parts. With that said, I wonder if I’ve been leaving the first lines in songs for Seina.
Seina: When we were first starting out, our choreographer also told me “your singing style goes straight into people’s hearts”, being told the same thing by SACHIKO, I thought “man it’s really that kind of feeling.” I’m even conscious of having a singing style like that, so I’m glad that feeling has been getting through.
Tumblr media
Tsukishiro Seina
SACHIKO: I’ve been sweating (laughs). Everyone's been giving me really serious looks…
LYSM: Ahahaha (laughing).
SACHIKO: And Maria is undeniably gorgeous.
Maria: (laughs)
SACHIKO: Her appearance and voice are totally linked, she has the most sex appeal. People’s lives come out in their singing voice, so hers makes me wonder if she’s been through a lot. Like before singing technique and everything, she was born with a “sexy” voice in the first place (laughs). In idol groups who have multiple people singing at the same time, the more varied everyone’s singing voices are, the better. In that sense, I think she’s a vocalist whose unique sex appeal can come out.
Maria: I don’t have much life experience though (laughs). I think this is the first time someone has said that about the role of my voice, I’m glad.
SACHIKO: Also, as the leader, she’s great at looking at things from a bird’s eye view. I think holding steady that kind of courage and her stage presence is a big part of her charm.
Maria: I’m glad I’ve been the leader (laughs). Since I’m quite conscious of watching everyone from one step behind them, you bringing that up has strengthened my self-awareness of my position as a leader.
Tumblr media
Kuon Maria
SACHIKO: I’ve thought that ever since your first live.
Maria: I’m so glad.
SACHIKO: And Rinka’s member color is sure enough pink… Ahh what was it? We chatted about it just before the interview, “Walking…”
Akari: “Walking Cute and Innocent Museum”
LYSM: (laughs)
SACHIKO: Yes that (laughs). As she can play that role without being unpleasant, I think her position is that she can appeal the most to people who like “The Idol”. She understands that herself. I think out of the five, she’s the vocalist whose ‘cuteness’ comes out above all the rest.
Rinka: I’m even conscious of that myself, like even if there’s a cool song, I make sure to sing with a bit of a cute feeling. I said this in our last interview, but I originally didn’t like my own voice. Thanks to fans complimenting my voice, gradually I was able to let out my quirks without hiding them, so now I’m really glad to have been born with this kind of voice.
SACHIKO: Even though everyone’s personalities are clearly distinct, that “cute and innocent” wording is… not so good (laughs). I want you to keep up your cuteness.
Rinka: “Cute and innocent” is okay! (laughs)
Like “woah” and “wow”
— Now I’m going to ask about the new mini album “∞”. My impression after listening to each of the 5 songs is that they’re all the kinds of songs you wouldn’t expect.
LYSM: (Nodding in agreement)
Akari: There’s really a sense that all 5 songs are totally different.
— From a singing standpoint, there were a lot of quite tough parts, weren't there?
LYSM: It was tough!
Akari: Basically, the prep time between when we were given the songs and recording them was super short, so it was tough to understand the lyrics within ourselves. Also, you have to go as far as how to express it in song too, don’t you? So after going into the recording booth, I really felt we had to deepen our understanding while singing.
Tumblr media
Tōmine Akari
— From the composition side of things, did you intend to give them something at a slightly higher level, rather than something they could do now?
SACHIKO: I didn’t have that in mind at all… perhaps the melodies I wrote were hard to sing.
Akari: They were! (laughs)
SACHIKO: I’ve been told that for a long time. I don’t think they’re hard for me… but that gap will forever be unfilled (laughs). If anything, since they gain understanding while always dealing with short recording times, I’ve been writing while conscious of trying to make the most catchy and easy to sing songs.
— With that said, did you feel surprised that they had concerns like that?
SACHIKO: That’s right. In fact, they send the tracks right after recording, every time I get a strong feeling that they can really properly sing them.
— So SACHIKO can know everyone’s concerns, could everyone tell the song they were the most concerned about?
LYSM: Hahaha
Seina: For me, “BABY BABY” was tough. At the part where the melody calms down, I was worrying about how I should put in my feelings… how I should make my low voice easy to hear, how I could resonate with people’s hearts, etc. There were just about 1 or 2 days until we recorded after we got the lyrics, so I thought “shit, what should I do, what should I do” while trying to deal with it. But each time I sang, I felt like I was able to see it little by little, so in the end I was able to record a song I was satisfied with. Like, “oh wow, I really sang well”.
Emma: For me, I think “Mugendai Actor” was the hardest. Our manager at the time told me “You don’t understand the meaning of the lyrics when you sing” and I had a strong resolution that I did understand them, but the sentiment the lyrics were written in were like ‘wow’ and ‘woah’.
Akari: Don’t just imitate the sound (laughs).
Emma: Since I understood the meaning of the lyrics, I may have linked them too much with my own feelings. But since I think it’s the song that those who hear it feel it’s the most “I got a sense of LYSM’s attitude towards life!” type of song, I want to keep singing it with the feeling that “this is LYSM!”
Tumblr media
Ichimiya Emma
Akari: The one I had trouble with was “One Room Parade”. I’ve loved rock music from the start, so it’s all I really listen to and sing; that’s why it was hard for me to sing such a cute song cutely. Also, considering my vocal range, when it came to especially tough lines, I was at a point like “If I can barely sing it in practice, will I even be able to sing it live?” On top of that, if I tried to sing with a cute voice, no matter what my throat would tighten and I wouldn’t be able to sing. I seriously didn’t get it. The lyrics were also so cute I couldn’t identify with them (laughs), like I’m not living such a cute life!
LYSM: Hahaha
Akari: So I thought “I can’t sing this as myself” and I threw myself aside for a bit. By thinking things like “this isn’t me, this isn’t me”, “I am the cute girl in the lyrics”, “I am cute”, I was able to overcome it.
SACHIKO: You were cute.
Akari: I’m glad! (laughs)
Maria: For me, the solo part I was given in “BABY BABY” had a crazy melody…
Seina: Should you say that in front of the composer?
SACHIKO: That kind of thing is important!
Maria: (Laughs) When I heard the demo I didn’t think I could ever sing it, so when I had to go into the recording booth our company president told me “try singing this part” and I thought “ahh that’s the part I was least confident about.” But then I remembered that my previous vocal trainer had told me “Maria, it’ll all be okay as long as you stay confident in yourself” and I fought back against myself and sang. As I felt like “hey, wasn’t that good?”, I was told it was a good take.
— So you were able to experience “if you try, you’ll be able to do it” firsthand?
Maria: Yes! I got a really good experience out of it.
Rinka: My story is a little similar, I was also given a part in “Disconnection Code” I didn’t think I could ever sing. It was the second verse’s B melody, it’s the highest pitched part of the song, so I really couldn’t sing it at first. We were given direction by SACHIKO during its recording, so she went out of her way to come into the booth with me and guided me through it and somehow in just one take I was able to sing it. After that, I was able to gradually sing it live, so I feel like I’ve been able to grow along with the song. It was also the song in which I was able to come back to the hardest part, so I have a strong attachment to it.
Tumblr media
Amabe Rinka
I want them to take 1 to 100
— So, tell us about your enthusiasm towards the “∞” release tour happening from October to November
Maria: First and foremost, I want our final performance at Shinjuku FATE to be sold out. FATE is the livehouse we’ve been able to make our home, so it’s a really precious place to all of us. That’s why I definitely want it to be sold out.
Akari: We haven’t experienced a sold out live before and I know how tall of a hurdle it is to sell out, but it’s precisely for that reason that we’ve decided to say our goal outloud.
— It’s not just in the music, it’s because you want to keep challenging “a little bit bigger than us” in other areas like that too?
Akari: That’s right! But FATE is our home, so I think it’s a venue that even out of those who wouldn’t come see a normal LYSM one-man would think to come just because it’s at FATE. So I want to do a tour where our doors are wide open, so even that kind of casual audience is able to come.
Emma: Also, for me, since it’s a tour that includes a triumphant return hometown live… actually while saying that I realized everyone has a triumphant return hometown live on this tour.
Seina: I don’t (laughs).
Akari: Yeah, there isn’t actually a tour stop in Yokohama.
Emma: (Laughs) Rather than being like “we’ll do this kind of live!”, I just really want people to come see and hear us. I’m really excited to see what kinds of reactions we’ll get for our new songs.
Rinka: Since I’m from Tokyo, I haven’t even had one triumphant return live…
— LYSM’s based in Tokyo, so there’s no such thing as a “triumphant return” for you?
Rinka: Yes (laughs). But even though I say I’m from Tokyo, I’m not from any of the 23 wards, so if we even did a live in a place like Kichijoji, it’ll feel like a hometown live (laughs). A live in Kichijoji isn’t included in the tour though, but next tour I’d like to try to do a live in Kichijoji… wait this isn’t about this tour (laughs). Well, since this is our first tour where we have 3 new songs, I want to say “look forward to the new LYSM!”
Tumblr media
LYSM
Maria: Also, this is a bit private, but a new manager joined us in October. LYSM will be breaking into our 2nd year too, so we’ll be growing together. I think we’ll get along well with our new manager before the tour.
Akari: Have we not gotten along well with her yet? (laughs)
Maria: We’ll just get along even better.
Seina: I also planned to say that we’ve entered our 2nd yearrrr.
Maria: Well then you can take it. Let’s make it something you said (laughs).
Seina: Ahh alright, alright (laughs)… Ah, that’s it! In our mini album there’s 2 songs in which I’m in charge of the lower harmony of the main melody… the lower harmonies are tough, aren’t they? So as a new challenge in this 2nd year, I’d really like to have a presence where I’m able to support our song pillar Akarin from below. It’s a personal goal, but in order to go higher as a group, each of us must get stronger.
— Thank you. SACHIKO, do you have any encouraging words for the five?
SACHIKO: When I was able to go see your 1st anniversary live in August, during “Haru ni Tou, Kimi ni Kou” I really felt a sense of unity in the venue, I ended up crying so hard even people around me noticed. LYSM raised that song to such a level that their singing power was undeniable, and with such sincerity too, to be able to do that is really an amazing thing. From now on, I’d like you all to raise all your songs to that level, I think only LYSM can do it. You’ve gone past going from 0 to 1, so I’d really like you all to take your 1 to 100.
LYSM: Thank you! We’ll do our best!
— SACHIKO’s words were totally 6th member-like.
SACHIKO: It feels close to something like that doesn’t it? That’s why I am able to write lyrics with words I want all of them to sing, without embellishing them.
Akari: I’m really glad SACHIKO is the one writing our songs.
SACHIKO: Yay! I’m really glad!

Doctor Who 10 for 10 Part 2/10: Series 2
Tumblr media
The 2005 revival of Doctor Who was a hit around the world, countering past criticisms and mockery of the series in the past that seemingly impeded the prospect of its return. However, with the departure of Christopher Eccleston announced just under two weeks into the premiere of the series, the production crew had to cast a new actor for the Doctor that would hopefully live up to the standard that Eccleston had achieved. Fortunately, though, they did manage to find one in David Tennant, a life-long fan of the series who had played characters in Big Finish audios and had a cameo role in the 40th Anniversary webcast Scream of the Shalka, which was originally intended to be the official continuation of the series until the RTD revival was announced.
The news of Tennant’s casting was announced on 15 April 2005, following the announcement of Eccleston’s departure two weeks before. This made a significant impact on production as RTD wanted to keep the regeneration secret until transmission and it also affected negotiations with Tennant and his agent. Luckily, negotiations went through smoothly and Tennant’s half of the regeneration scene in the finale was filmed soon after.
The rest is history. Let’s begin the retrospective for Series 2.
1. A new Christmas tradition
Even before Series 1 premiered in March 2005, the BBC had so much confidence in the success of Doctor Who that Jane Tranter, the drama controller at the BBC, commissioned not only a new series for 2006, but an hour-long Christmas Special for December 2005. The yearly Christmas Special (New Year’s/Festive Special during the Chibnall era) would go on to become a tradition for Doctor Who, just as Christmas specials in general became traditions in UK television.
With David Tennant debuting as the Tenth Doctor at the end of The Parting of the Ways, the then-upcoming Christmas Special, titled The Christmas Invasion, would provide an ample opportunity to introduce the new Doctor before he and Rose continued their adventures from the first episode of Series 2 nearly four months later.
For most of the episode, the Doctor is out of action while recovering from his regeneration, which allows an opportunity to explore post-regeneration domestics with Rose, Mickey and Jackie. In the end, the Doctor comes in to save the day (as always) and the ensuing scenes establish his character as someone who will let an enemy go after they cross him, but then give no second chances if they attack him after that. Arguably, this trait is something that would be common to all Doctors, even the Thirteenth Doctor, though if you compare the end of this Christmas Special and some episodes of the Jodie Whittaker era (particularly Arachnids in the UK and War of the Sontarans), you can see how Chris Chibnall completely missed the point of the character trait he clearly ripped off from the Tenth Doctor.
The special also featured an original song, Song for Ten, performed by Tim Phillips. Although an extended version was released, it was rearranged and rerecorded by Neil Hannon, however Tim Phillips did perform it for the Doctor Who Proms concert in 2008, even if it sounded like he was drunk while doing so.
In addition to the Christmas Special, Doctor Who decided to contribute something to the BBC’s Children In Need telethon every year starting from 2005. The contribution mostly included a preview of that year’s Christmas Special or an original short bridging the events between it and the last episode. From 2019-2021, there was no original contribution from Doctor Who for Children in Need (although their segments were featured), but in 2022, the contribution was the reveal of Series 14 companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.
Because The Christmas Invasion was filmed alongside Series 2, subsequent Christmas Specials would be counted among the next series’ episodes in home media releases, barring the specials that featured the regeneration of the Doctor. While I was okay with this episode arrangement during the RTD era, in the Moffat era I thought that the specials should be counted amongst those for the previous series. This would become the case for the New Year’s Specials in the Chibnall era.
Also, fun fact - Christopher Eccleston was credited as “Doctor Who” during Series 1, but David Tennant requested that he be credited as “the Doctor”, and thus all future Doctors from then on were credited as such, just as Peter Davison was back in the classic series.
2. Return of an old companion
Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, was a companion of the Third and Fourth Doctors from 1973 to 1976, later reprising her role in 1981 for the K9 and Company pilot, A Girl’s Best Friend, 1983 for the 20th Anniversary Special, The Five Doctors, and 1993 for the 30th anniversary Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time.
Sarah Jane was such an iconic companion that RTD wanted to spotlight her in the hope of shedding a light on what happens (and what happened) to those who travel with the Doctor. The production approached Sladen in early 2005 and she accepted the offer to return after fears that she was only being invited back for a throwaway cameo. Sarah Jane made her return in Series 2’s third episode, School Reunion. Although initially not planned on returning, K9 was added to the story (along with Mickey Smith) on the request of the production team; K9 was destroyed at the end of the episode, but the Doctor rebuilt him and left him with Sarah Jane.
During the episode, we got to see the dynamic between Rose and Sarah Jane as there is a scene where they discuss their time as companions of the Doctor. The effects of the Doctor leaving Sarah Jane are also explored, providing some foreshadowing for Rose’s situation in the series finale. Of course, this wouldn’t be Sarah Jane’s only involvement in the Doctor Who revival.
3. Genesis of the spinoffs
Doctor Who was starting to peak in popularity at the start of Series 2 thanks to what had come before. In 2005 and 2006, the BBC asked RTD to develop two spin-offs of Doctor Who; a mature series directed to an adult audience, which would be known as Torchwood; and a children’s drama, which would be known as The Sarah Jane Adventures.
The title Torchwood, an anagram of “Doctor Who”, was used as a codename during production of Series 1 to disguise footage from the series prior to broadcast. RTD even sprinkled mentions of it in Series 1 and 2 in the hopes that he could use it should a spinoff be commissioned. Luckily, it was and the finale of Series 2 would feature the Torchwood Institute in earnest in preparation for the spinoff.
The main character of Torchwood was Captain Jack Harkness, who had been left behind on Satellite Five following his death and resurrection in The Parting of the Ways. He would attempt to make his way from 200,100 to the 21st century using his vortex manipulator, but he missed and ended up in 1869 where his vortex manipulator burned out. Eventually in 1899, he would be found by Torchwood agents and brought to their branch in Cardiff, where he began working for them until he could find the Doctor again. Following the events of the Series 2 finale, the Cardiff branch, also known as Torchwood Three became the only surviving branch of the Torchwood Institute.
The first series of Torchwood premiered on 22 October 2006, with a second series following a year after the finale on 16 April 2008. A third series, featuring a single five-part story, was broadcast from 6 to 10 July 2009. The fourth series, Miracle Day, premiered in July 2011. In 2015, Big Finish would begin featuring Torchwood in a new monthly series of audio dramas while also releasing new audio dramas continuing the story after Miracle Day.
The Sarah Jane Adventures featured, obviously, Sarah Jane Smith, continuing her story following her appearance in School Reunion. It took place concurrently with the main Doctor Who series, which allowed for Sarah Jane, her son Luke Smith, and K9 to appear in the Series 4 finale of Doctor Who, which took place between the first and second series of SJA. The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors also appeared in two stories while the Brigadier and Jo Grant (now Jo Jones) made guest appearances as well.
The pilot episode of SJA, Invasion of the Bane, was broadcast on 1 January 2007 (alongside the finale of Torchwood Series 1). The series began in earnest later that year on 24 September and new series would be produced every year until Elisabeth Sladen’s death on 19 April 2011, forcing production on the fifth series to be abandoned as the series itself was cancelled.
Before SJA though, there was also Totally Doctor Who, a magazine-style show similar to Blue Peter that was more like a junior version of Doctor Who Confidential. Episodes premiered on the Thursday or Friday prior to a new episode, reviewing the previous episode while previewing the upcoming episode as well. The second series also debuted an animated serial, The Infinite Quest. As a result, there was no episode covering the final episode of each series. Only two series of Totally Doctor Who were produced as CBBC wanted to focus their funding on The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2008 onwards.
The BBC also took advantage of interactive and online mediums to release content. Relevant to Series 2, short minute-long preludes known as Tardisodes were released for phones through the internet, meaning that they could also be watched on computers. The Tardisodes were never released on home media so there are no standard-quality versions of them anywhere and future prequel shorts would be released online while also being made available on home media.
Attack of the Graske, an interactive movie game, premiered on BBC Red Button and was also made available on the Series 2 DVD and online as a Flash game.
Unfortunately, spinoffs, prequels and behind-the-scenes content began waning during the Moffat era. Aside from the ending of Torchwood and SJA, Doctor Who Confidential was cancelled at the end of Series 6 and behind-the-scenes content became shorter and scarcer even with series like Doctor Who Extra, Inside Look, Closer Look, The Fan Show and Access All Areas. A spinoff Class premiered in 2016, but it never got past one series. Luckily, with the RTD2 era and the worldwide move to Disney+, Doctor Who Confidential is rumoured to return as Doctor Who Unleashed and spinoff series involving Cybermen, Daleks, Sontarans, Weeping Angels and Sea Devils are reportedly in the works, but time will only tell.
4. Double-banking
Over the years, it has become clear that filming 13 episodes and a Christmas Special over nine months would be a daunting task, hence why episode numbers were gradually cut over the years during the Moffat and Chibnall eras. As stated in the previous instalment, Series 1’s filming, especially the first block, was a nightmare because the crew were inexperienced and as such, production went over schedule.
Although there was no double-banking planned, The Long Game was forced to enter production during the filming of The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances (or maybe it was the other way around considering the order of the blocks). Filming for The Long Game was entirely done in studio and “third leads” in the form of Adam Mitchell and Jack Harkness were introduced, which narrowly allowed all three episodes to be completed in time.
During Series 2, RTD devised the concept of a Doctor-lite episode, that is an episode without the Doctor or his companion, at least for most of the episode (Father’s Day in Series 1 could be considered one as well). This was a necessity when the Christmas Specials were commissioned, meaning that double-banking was the only practical way to film 14 episodes in 9 months considering what it takes to film an episode of Doctor Who.
Love & Monsters is the episode that resulted from this concept in Series 2. It was originally planned to be filmed alongside Fear Her, but delays in The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit meant that it would be filmed alongside those episodes instead. This episode is apparently notorious among fans for being bad, at least towards the end.
The monster in this episode, the Abzorbaloff (played by Peter Kay), was created by then-nine-year-old William Grantham as part of a Blue Peter “design-a-monster competition”. Grantham would go on to start the Channel Pup YouTube channel and also aside from insulting Bowlestrek and NoelZone (at one point), would go on to talk about this experience and judge another design competition for a monster to be featured in a Doctor Who: Lockdown! minisode released in 2021 to tie in with the tweetalong for Love & Monsters.
5. The New Earth saga
I didn’t talk about Cassandra and the Face of Boe aside from an honourable mention in the last instalment, so I’ll talk about them here now.
The first three series had an episode near the start that covered the New Earth saga; Series 1 had The End of the World, Series 2 had the aptly named New Earth and Series 3 had Gridlock.
In the year 5,000,000,000, Cassandra sabotaged Platform One so that it would be destroyed along with the Earth when the sun expanded, but the Ninth Doctor thwarted her plans and when Cassandra tried to escape, he teleported her back to Platform One and let her skin dry out without her surgeons to moisturise her.
Her brain survived, however, and 23 years later, she was hiding in the basement of a hospital on New Earth with her force-cloned assistant, Chip. She used a psychograft to transfer her consciousness into Rose’s body in an attempt to discover the secret of the Sisters of Plenitude and blackmail them. When that failed, she released all the patients the Sisters were experimenting on and attempted to cause a pandemic, however through Cassandra switching bodies multiple times and showing remorse for the patients’ suffering, the Doctor managed to cure the patients, helping create a new subspecies of humans to populate New Earth. Following this, Cassandra possessed Chip to return Rose to the Doctor and decided that it was time to let herself die with Chip, but not before the Doctor took Cassandra to her past and allowed her to tell her past self that she was beautiful.
Although they merely passed each other on Platform One, the Doctor met the Face of Boe again in the hospital, where he was dying of old age. When the crisis in the hospital was over, the Doctor saw the Face of Boe, who told him that they would meet again and that he would tell him his last words then before teleporting away. I’ll leave the rest for the Series 3 retrospective in the next instalment.
A factoid regarding Cassandra - RTD told Doctor Who Magazine that if her actor, Zoë Wanamaker, had not been available for New Earth, then the villain would have been Cassandra’s sister, Roseanne.
6. Mickey, the tin dog
Series 2 saw some more character development for Mickey, particularly in regards to his relationship with Rose. In Series 1, Mickey was a bit of a coward and the Doctor didn’t respect him, even going so far as to call him “Ricky”. However, during the encounter with the Slitheen, Mickey showed the Doctor that he wasn’t entirely the coward he thought he was and they began to have a mutual respect for each other.
Following his regeneration, the Doctor was on more friendlier terms with Mickey. After meeting Sarah Jane and K9, Mickey realised that being the “technical support” for the Doctor and Rose, he was essentially the K9 of their relationship - the “tin dog”. This would lead him to join the Doctor and Rose, deciding that he didn’t want to be the “tin dog” anymore.
After falling into a parallel universe (that would later be known as Pete’s World), Mickey met his parallel counterpart, Ricky, who was braver than he was when he first met the Doctor. He also met his blind grandmother, Rita-Anne, who died in his home universe when she tripped over a tear in her stair carpet that Mickey had been meaning to get fixed. During an encounter with the Cybus Cybermen in which Ricky was killed, he gained the courage to stand up and defeat the Cybermen in his place. These factors were what led Ricky to remain in the parallel universe, along with him realising that Rose preferred being with the Doctor more than him.
Continuing into future series territory, Mickey came back to the Doctor’s universe twice, once while following the Cybermen and once during the War in the Medusa Cascade. Following the latter, Mickey took the opportunity to move back to his home universe, seeing as Rita-Anne passed away after spending her last years living in a mansion, presumably Pete and Jackie Tyler’s mansion, and Rose had another version of the Doctor, meaning that there wasn’t anything left for him on that world. From this we can see how Mickey has grown through hardship to become who he was in the end.
Noel Clarke has acknowledged that he made Mickey slapstick because he assumed that Doctor Who had a younger audience. This was apparently criticised by fans and Clarke decided to tone the comedic elements down for Series 2. In an interview with Tony Hadoke for his Big Finish podcast in 2014, Russell T Davies said that Clarke overthought this and that he was doing exactly what was written in the scripts.
7. A classic villain redesign
Speaking of Cybermen (from the previous topic), Series 2 saw the return of the iconic metal men in a new design that would be iconic to the revived series until Series 7 Part 2 in 2013. Although the head of a Cyberman was shown in Henry van Statten’s underground museum in Dalek, it wouldn’t be until Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel that the Cybermen were fully reintroduced. Since the history of the Cybermen was complicated due to various origins and backstories (which would later be explained by parallel evolution in Series 10), RTD decided to use a parallel universe as their origin.
The Cybusmen, as they would come to be known, are bulkier and more monotone because they were made to be more robotic compared to the classic series. They also used technical terms and the catchphrase “Delete” which had not been used previously in the classic series.
Since the design of the Cybusmen was also used in Series 5 and 6, Neil Gaiman theorised that they “cross-pollinated” with the Mondasian/Telosian Cybermen, eventually resulting in the new unified design that made its debut in Nightmare in Silver.
8. The parallel universe factor
The aforementioned Cybermen two-parter wasn’t the first story to feature parallel universes as the Third Doctor serial Inferno did so back in 1970. The Tenth Doctor claimed that travelling between parallel universes was possible thanks to the Time Lords, I have to press X to doubt seeing as we had very few parallel universe stories in the past. The revived series is the first time where a parallel universe plays a big part in the ongoing series’ story arc.
In Pete’s World (where Rose’s father, Pete Tyler, hadn’t been killed when she was a baby), John Lumic had the Cybermen developed through Cybus Industries as a means of making humanity immortal while he was suffering from a terminal illness himself. The entire project contravened the Genevan Bio-Convention so the experiments had to be carried out in secret with people whose disappearances wouldn’t be noticed. That world was mostly controlled by Cybus Industries, with the company owning many other companies (including Pete Tyler’s health drink company, Vitex) and controlling the media.
The majority of people wore EarPods made by Cybus, allowing Lumic to control people and retrieve information from their brains while also allowing people to communicate and enjoy media, similar to what smartphones are used for nowadays (back in 2006, mobile phones, game consoles and music players were separate things). The EarPods also played a part in “the ultimate upgrade”, commanding people all over London to head to the Cyber-factory in Battersea for cyber-conversion. Yeah, I suppose that’s a way to prevent freedom protests, by directly controlling people’s minds.
Given the events of the last few years, I feel like Pete’s World satirically foreshadows the “New World Order” thing that some people have been talking about, only it’s not “you will own nothing and be happy”, it’s more “you will feel nothing and be identical”. On top of Cybus Industries and EarPods, there are also army blockades and nightly curfews for the lower-class, rich people using zeppelins in the 21st century, Great Britain is a “People’s Republic”, the countries of South America are combined into a state and there’s a “United States of Mexico”. How very World Economic Forum of you. Anyway, if you want to hear the opposite of this you’ll have to wait for the next instalment.
Anyway, a little factoid regarding Pete - apparently, Simon Pegg was cast to play him, but since he was unavailable when Father’s Day was going to be filmed, the role went to Shaun Dingwall. Pegg would go on to play the Editor in The Long Game.
9. The Cult of Skaro
Each series finale in the RTD era has featured a villain who escaped from the Time War. Series 1 had the Dalek Emperor and with Series 2 comes the Cult of Skaro.
The Cult of Skaro was an elite group of four Daleks who were above and beyond the Emperor himself and designed to think as the enemy thinks and imagine new ways of survival. They were even given names, which was unique for Daleks. The Cult of Skaro formed another mini-arc that would culminate in the Series 4 finale.
During the Time War, the Cult of Skaro escaped into the Void in a Void Ship with the Genesis Ark, which contained millions of Daleks captured by the Time Lords. The Void Ship caused cracks in the universe (opened even further by Torchwood’s meddling), which caused the TARDIS to end up in Pete’s World and later, allowed the Cybermen from that world to imprint themselves into the Doctor’s universe (as ghosts) before invading it in earnest. This would also allow people to jump between universes, but at the cost of ripping holes in the universe.
In Army of Ghosts and Doomsday, the Cult of Skaro revealed themselves and also discovered the existence of the Cybermen, which led to a war between them in an act of pest control. During the conflict, the Genesis Ark was opened and the millions of Daleks captured began swarming out, exterminating Cybermen, humans and the like. The Cult of Skaro managed to escape with an Emergency Temporal Shift when the Doctor sent the Cybermen and Daleks into the Void.
This story marked the first time the Daleks and Cybermen were shown together on-screen, in conflict no less. Although the Daleks and Cybermen would be shown together under lesser capacities in a few later episodes, the next episode where they would be seen together with roles of significance would be The Power of the Doctor. Apparently this idea was floated about in December 1967 when the BBC approached Terry Nation about it, but Nation vetoed the idea.
10. The Rose left on the beach
Too soon, I know. It’s never too soon when it comes to Doctor Who, apparently.
Although it was reported in March 2006 that David Tennant and Billie Piper had signed on for Series 3, it would later be reported that Piper would be leaving the series, at first midway through Series 2, then later at the end. This was a decision that Piper had made a year prior, but remained secret until it was reported. In 2021, Piper would later explain that the fame of playing Rose made her “really uncomfortable”, plus she wanted to do different things and didn’t like the responsibility of being a role model (which is more than can be said for some Kamen Rider actors).
In-series, the departure of Rose was because travelling through the Void caused her to be covered in background radiation, or “Void stuff”. The Doctor’s plan was to open the Void using Torchwood’s equipment and suck the “Void stuff” back in, the Cybermen and Daleks along with it. However, since anyone covered in the “Void stuff” would be sucked in as well, the only option was for Rose to go to Pete’s World with Jackie, Mickey and Pete while the Doctor used the magnaclamps to hold on.
Rose was sent to Pete’s World, but she immediately went back, not willing to leave the Doctor. She helped the Doctor execute his plan, but when they opened the Void, Rose couldn’t hold on (when the lever on her side was about to fail) and was about to be sucked in as well until Pete saved her, after initially refusing to do so out of concern that more damage would be done to his universe. For this scene, there was some debate over who would rescue Rose; RTD and Julie Gardner wanted Pete, while Noel Clarke and Phil Collinson wanted Mickey. Ultimately, the former was chosen to show that he had accepted Rose as a surrogate daughter.
Following these events, the Doctor managed to find a remnant breach and caused a supernova (according to his words) to contact Rose. Rose found the Doctor projecting himself at a place that translated to Bad Wolf Bay and they said goodbye, though the Doctor was never able to say his last words to her before the breach fully closed.
Rose was officially declared dead as a result of the conflict at Canary Wharf. Jack Harkness would learn of this and bring it up to the Doctor when they next met, only for the Doctor to correct him.
Although RTD told the press that Rose was gone for good, he apparently told Piper, “See you in two years.” Piper would later reprise her role in Series 4 before returning again in 2013 for The Day of the Doctor. A spinoff for Rose titled Rose Tyler: Earth Defence was commissioned by the BBC, but RTD cancelled it because he thought it would have lessened the impact of Doomsday. However, Piper would be featured in the Big Finish audio series The Dimension Cannon, which details Rose’s adventures in other universes before meeting the Doctor again in Series 4. Producer David Richardson told RTD that he wanted to bring the cancelled spinoff to life through audio, but during the development stage, RTD suggested the current idea instead and they went with that.
Series 2 saw Doctor Who being elevated to the level of an idol drama as audiences were treated to the developing relationship between the Doctor and Rose before circumstances tore them apart. Despite this, the series still maintained its science-fiction roots while calling back to the classic series and continuing to innovate itself for the modern era. With the previous series sticking to settings based on Earth or just near it, this series began exploring planets outside of Earth, showing just how the series had evolved since its revival.
At the same time, Series 2 also provided the starting foundation for the two spinoffs complementing Doctor Who and elevated David Tennant’s popularity to the point that he is basically the revived series equivalent of Tom Baker. After the difficulties that plagued Series 1, Series 2 showed that the series had found its footing and could continue evolving by leaps and bounds.
Stay tuned for Part 3 where I give my 10 takes on Series 3.
