New Toyota Hybrids Coming in 2021

La nouvelle Pacifica Pinnacle AWD et la Subaru Outback Wilderness.

Il fut un temps où les fourgonnettes (les «minivan» que certains ont traduit par mini-fourgonnette…je ne vois rien de «mini» ici, moi!) étaient les reines de la route et les véhicules les plus recherchés par les consommateurs, surtout ceux avec des enfants. Depuis les quelques dernières années, l’engouement pour ce type de véhicule s’est lentement dissipé. Le marché a parlé, il préfère les VUS et les VUM! Plusieurs constructeurs ont même abandonné ce style de véhicule. Pour le moment, il ne reste plus que quelques rares constructeurs qui ont conservé des fourgonnettes à leur catalogue : Toyota et sa Sienna, Honda et son Odyssey, Kia et sa Sedona maintenant rebaptisée Carnival et, bien entendu la division Chrysler de Stellantis avec sa belle Pacifica. Et toutes sont proposées à un prix…vraiment plus élevé que dans le passé. On dirait qu’une fourgonnette est devenue un véhicule de luxe! La Grand Caravan? Elle n’existe plus sous la marque Dodge mais le nom devrait nous revenir bientôt car Stellantis Canada nous a dévoilé une version Grand Caravan de la Pacifica qui ne sera produite que pour le marché canadien. Elle devrait nous arriver sous peu…
J’ai toujours eu un penchant pour les fourgonnettes (nous en avons eu quatre chez nous!). J’ai toujours considéré la configuration d’une fourgonnette comme étant le véhicule idéal. Une fourgonnette, ça se conduit comme une auto mais ça peut se «charger» comme une camionnette. Il y a de la place pour plusieurs passagers et toutes sont faciles (ou presque) à atteindre. Avec le temps, les fourgonnettes ont acquis des moteurs à la hauteur de la situation et surtout, la (maintenant sacro-sainte) traction intégrale! La configuration idéale, quoi? Mais plusieurs consommateurs en pensent différemment…

Donc, il ne reste plus tant de fourgonnettes que cela sur le marché. Mais il y a toujours Chrysler de Stellantis, l’initiateur de la fourgonnette «moderne» (je sais, il y a eu Volkswagen avant mais le modèle des années quatre-vingt, date de parution des «Autobeaucoup» de Chrysler (Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager) était plus une curiosité qu’un véhicule courant chez nous). Et Chrysler nous propose encore sa belle Pacifica. Et depuis cette année, elle est enfin livrable avec la traction intégrale.

C’est donc cette variante que j’ai conduite la semaine dernière. Toutefois, c’était loin d’être un véhicule de base mais plutôt une version Pinnacle très haut de gamme. La Pacifica est avec nous depuis quelques années déjà mais en 2021, elle affiche un avant légèrement retouché avec des phares DEL, une nouvelle calandre et des feux arrière revus. Pour le reste, il s’agit toujours d’un véhicule relativement imposant mais avec des portières latérales coulissantes qui facilitent vraiment l’accès aux places arrière. Pour le cargo, il y a toujours l’imposant hayon tout à l’arrière.

Avant de parler de son intérieur, ce qui fait la force d’attrait de ce véhicule, mentionnons que le seul moteur disponible dans les Pacifica demeure le maintenant vénérable V6 Pentastar de 3,6 litres de 287 chevaux et 262 li-pi de couple (disponible en version hybride…). Il est combiné à une boîte automatique à neuf rapports et à la traction intégrale automatique. Cela veut dire qu’en conduite régulière, c’est ni plus ni moins qu’une traction avant. Lorsque les roues d’avant perdent de leur adhérence, le système le ressent et envoie de la puissance aux roues arrière. Naturellement, pour placer tout cet ensemble sous le véhicule, il a fallu en relever un peu la garde au sol (moins d’un pouce). Mais immédiatement, sachez que la Pacifica AWD n’est pas du tout un véhicule tout-terrain! Pour l’hiver, Stellantis Canada avait équipé cette Pacifica de pneus appropriés Yokohama Ice Guard sur jantes de 20 pouces.

C’est définitivement l’intérieur qui est la caractéristique la plus importante d’un tel véhicule dont la capacité est de sept passagers. Avec la finition Pinnacle, on est loin des fourgonnettes de base du passé! Si rien de base n’a nécessairement changé, la finition, elle, est encore plus élaborée. Mon modèle d’essai avait cette sellerie en cuir Nappa et, bien caché sous le dossier replié des places arrière, j’y ai trouvé deux coussins agencés!

C’est aussi au niveau du tableau de bord que j’y ai vu les améliorations de 2011. L’instrumentation demeure la même (et pas mal la même que celle de la majorité des produits Chrysler de Stellantis) et elle est bien lisible. Cette Pacifica haut de gamme était aussi équipé du nouveau système Uconnect 5 (le système Uconnect est vanté par tellement de journalistes pour sa simplicité d’opération et sa précision) et un écran de 10,1 pouces (le plus imposant de son segment)! Incidemment, le Uconnect 5 est compatible avec Alexa qui permet de le questionner concernant la météo, la circulation, la musique, les sports et j’en passe! Alexa se vante d’être cinq fois plus rapide qu’Android! Oh! AppleCar Play et Android Auto sont maintenant reliés sans fil. Quant à la console, elle a été redessinée pour se confondre avec le tableau de bord.

Il est rare que j’aie à me plaindre des sièges de produits Chrysler. C’en est encore le cas ici. Glisser dans celui du conducteur y est très facile même si le véhicule est légèrement plus haut qu’auparavant. La Pacifica n’est pas une auto de sport donc, elle ne devrait pas avoir des sièges avec de gros supports latéraux protubérants. Néanmoins, je n’ai pas eu à me plaindre de mon assise dans le siège du conducteur. Il est ferme et il soutient bien mais il demeure confortable. C’est d’ailleurs la même remarque pour les sièges du centre qui offrent beaucoup d’espace pour les passagers et surtout une facilité d’accès grâce aux portes coulissantes (à commande électrique!). Les sièges du centre devaient se replier dans le plancher (Stow & Go), une nouveauté avec la traction intégrale mais j’ai réussi à les démonter et les sortir du véhicule! La dernière banquette semble avoir été conçue surtout pour des enfants car les places sont étroites. Mais les sièges se replient par commande électrique dans le plancher ce qui agrandit l’espace de chargement. Seule note sombre au tableau, à mes premiers essais, le système a hésité. J’ai dû le forcer un peu mais par après, il a très bien fonctionné. Au cas où vous ne le sauriez pas, il est maintenant possible d’avoir un aspirateur intégré à l’intérieur de la Pacifica (Vac & Go) Ah oui, le hayon s’ouvre automatiquement en passant le pied sous le pare-chocs.

Sur la route
Au départ, si vous êtes complètement fermés à l’idée de conduire une fourgonnette…que puis-je vous dire? J’ai toujours considéré ce genre de véhicule comme la solution idéale à tous les besoins. Et n’oubliez pas que les petites «Autobeaucoup» de Chrysler (Magic Vans en anglais) nous sont apparues au milieu des années quatre-vingt, soit il y a plus de 35 ans. Il y a donc eu des améliorations à tous les niveaux incluant la tenue de route et les performances.
Cependant, je vous mets encore une fois en garde, la Pacifica Pinnacle AWD n’est pas une voiture de sport. Mais ce n’est pas un camion commercial non plus. Toutefois, dès que l’on monte à bord, force nous est d’admettre que la visibilité y est de beaucoup supérieure à celle de plusieurs automobiles. Tout est à la portée de la main. On lance le moteur et on prend la route avec un peu de son du moteur mais rien de dérangeant (les glaces latérales des version haut de gamme de Pacifica sont plus épaisses). Mes premiers essais d’accélération m’ont un peu déçu, cette Pacifica demandant autour de neuf secondes pour grimper à 100 km/h. Et cela, qu’à deux dans le véhicule. Mais, à la défense de cette Chrysler, il faut dire que sa mécanique est un peu plus lourde ce qui doit jouer un certain rôle dans cet exercice. Toutefois, les reprises me sont apparues bien confortables alors que le V6 (un moteur reconnu pour sa fiabilité) fait très bien son travail. La direction n’est ni tendre ni ferme mais relativement précise. Quant au freinage, encore une fois, il faut composer avec un poids de près de 5000 livres (à sec!). En passant, cette Pacifica a une capacité de remorquage de 3600 livres, semblable à celle de la concurrence. Enfin, la traction intégrale peut ajouter au poids du véhicule et lui retirer un peu de performance et d’économie de carburant, elle demeure un élément mécanique des plus rassurants en hiver ou sur du pavé mouillé! Encore une fois, la Pacifica AWD n’est pas une Jeep mais on en appréciera l’efficacité dans des conditions adverses.
En ce qui a trait à la consommation, j’ai obtenu une moyenne de 14,99 l/100 km selon mes calculs à la pompe alors que l’ordinateur de bord marquait 13,9, le tout après une conduite surtout en ville. EnerGuide Canada mentionne une consommation moyenne de 12,0 l/100 km en situation idéale!
Une Pacifica de base (Touring) débute à 44 795 $. La version Touring AWD débute à 48 295 $ alors que l’Hybrid commence à 53 995 (mais la traction intégrale AWD n’y est pas disponible! Dans le cas de la Pinnacle dont il est question ici, celle-ci commence à 65 795 $. Son équipement optionnel incluait une peinture de 245 $, l’ensemble de remorquage de 895 $, la toujours aussi ridicule taxe d’accise pour le climatiseur de 100 $ et les frais de destination et de préparation de 1895 $ pour un grand total de 68 930 $.
Je sais, je sais…presque 70 000 $ pour une «van», c’est de l’argent. Toutefois, sachez que Stellantis Canada devrait déjà proposer une nouvelle version de la Grand Caravan mais cette fois à l’enseigne Chrysler! Elle ressemble à une Pacifica de l’ancien modèle mais je n’en ai pas encore vue. Dans sa version de base, Stellantis en avait déjà avancé un prix de 37 995 $ alors que dans sa version SXT à sept passagers, le prix grimpait à 39 995 $. Désolé, ces Grand Caravan ne sont qu’à traction, il n’y a pas de traction intégrale annoncée!

Une nouvelle Subaru encore plus robuste
Subaru vient de dévoiler les images de son modèle Outback Wilderness en réponse à ces nouvelles versions hors-route de petits VUS comme le Bronco Sport. La version Wilderness inclut une garde au sol relevée de 8,7 à 9,5 pouces et la possibilité de l’équiper de plaques de protection sous la mécanique. Grâce à sa fonction X-Mode, cette Subaru pourrait bien s’avérer un tout-terrain excitant. J’espère vous en parler bientôt!

2021 Toyota Sienna first drive review: Minivan versatility, economy-car efficiency
Some vehicles can haul a load of passengers, others are supremely comfortable and plenty of others deliver incredible fuel efficiency. Plot these attributes on a Venn diagram and the 2021 Toyota Sienna would land smack-dab in the middle. It can accommodate up to eight adults, plus it’s appropriately cushy and amazingly economical. For drivers that haven’t completely turned their noses up to minivans, the new Sienna makes a strong case for itself.
One of the best arguments in favor of this Toyota is fuel economy. After a good ol’ thrashing on a wide variety of roads, I averaged just shy of 35 miles per gallon in my Platinum-trim, all-wheel-drive tester. That’s practically economy-car efficiency, plus it’s right in line with this Toyota’s window sticker. According to the EPA, it should return 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. Front-drive models are rated at 36 mpg across the board, and all-wheel drive is available across the lineup.
Delivering that astonishing real-world efficiency is a hybrid drivetrain, which is standard in all 2021 Siennas. Yep, a traditional V6 is no longer offered. This gasoline-electric propulsion system, which is built around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a 1.9-kilowatt-hour nickel-metal hydride battery pack mounted underneath the front seats, delivers 245 horsepower, a good bit less than you get in either a Honda Odyssey (280 hp) or non-plug-in-hybrid Chrysler Pacifica (287 hp).

As you might expect, the Sienna’s performance is perfectly adequate but hardly thrilling. It feels a bit tepid around town, exactly where you’d expect a hybrid with immediate torque provided by electric motors to shine. Paradoxically, this van seems punchier out on the open road, accelerating more vigorously. Still, a little extra giddy-up would be appreciated, especially if you’re hauling a full load or towing anywhere near this van’s 3,500-pound limit. When working hard, the Sienna’s fuel-sipping drivetrain also sounds a bit distressed, louder and more grumbly than I recall the Toyota Highlander Hybrid being, which has basically the same powertrain. Minor gripes aside, it’s hard to argue with the economy this family-hauler provides.
Riding on a derivative of the automaker’s ubiquitous TNGA platform, the 2021 Sienna grows slightly compared to its predecessor. It’s a fraction of an inch wider and 3.1 inches longer. Additionally, the wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer and the floor is a bit lower. The Sienna’s new foundation also provides greater rigidity, giving it an impressively solid feel, while a new independent rear-suspension design improves handling and refinement. This minivan’s ride quality is supple, with little coarseness from the road filtering through to the cabin. Its interior also remains impressively hushed, even at highway speeds. Handling is benign and predictable, with a bit of body roll when pushed through corners, though my Platinum model’s Bridgestone Turanza tires mounted on chrome-clad 18-inch wheels give up long before you could ever get yourself in trouble, howling even when mildly pushed. Braking performance is good, though the pedal does feel rubbery and a bit unnatural as it progresses from regenerative to friction braking.

But this is not something your passengers are ever going to notice. The Sienna’s aft accommodations are lovely, especially with the super-long-slide bucket seats, which are standard equipment on all seven-passenger models. Recliner comfortable, they move 25 inches fore and aft for stretch-out room, plus on front-drive Limited and Platinum models they also come with fold-out ottomans for even greater luxury. As for this Toyota’s third-row seat, no, it doesn’t feature any integrated leg-rests, but it is plenty spacious for adult passengers and is very cushy.
When it’s time to haul cargo instead of people, those long-slide second-row seats are, unfortunately, nonremovable — well not without some tools and a service manual. This is because they contain airbags. Ditto for eight-passenger models; their second-row seats cannot be taken out, either. The Sienna’s second-row seats do, however, fold and push all the way up to the back of the front buckets, providing a generous amount of interior space, 6.5 feet from the backrests to the rear hatch, though it still has significantly fewer cubic feet of room than either an Odyssey or Pacifica. Fortunately, this Toyota can still haul 4×8 sheets of building material, with the plywood or drywall somewhat awkwardly resting on top of the second-row seat’s headrests.
The new Sienna’s cabin is thoughtfully designed and well built. Some of its interior materials are rather ordinary, but nothing is chintzy or frail feeling. There are also plenty of places to put things, with a large cubby running across the dashboard and generously sized door pockets. I love the design of the center console, which looks like a bridge running from the dashboard back between the front seats. That console also makes the Sienna feel cozy yet open at the same time.
Second-row comfort is one of this minivan’s major selling points.

One disappointing aspect of this minivan is the infotainment system, which runs on a standard, 9-inch, tablet-style touchscreen. Bright and clear, it’s easy to reach, though the software is mediocre at best, unattractive and not particularly intuitive. Toyota really needs to improve its multimedia offerings these days, as well as the back-up and 360-degree cameras, which are gritty looking and quite inferior to what’s offered in other vehicles.
Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. The Sienna offers plenty of other tech, much of which is very handy. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A 10-inch color head-up display is included on the Platinum model, making it easy to keep track of vehicle speed and navigation prompts without taking your eyes off the road. A 12-speaker JBL sound system is available, as is a crisp, 11.6-inch, 1080p HD rear-seat entertainment screen. Ensuring everyone’s devices stay fully charged, seven USB ports are sprinkled throughout the cabin. Two handy standalone options the Sienna can be had with include a 1,500-watt power inverter with a household-style outlet on the back of the center console and another one in the cargo area, plus a digital rear-view mirror, which gives you a much wider field of view behind the vehicle. The 2021 Toyota Sienna can also be ordered with an integrated vacuum cleaner and a mini refrigerator, though these features will not be available immediately at launch due to supplier issues.
As for driver-assistance tech, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every version of the Sienna. This suite includes helpful features like automatic high beams, road-sign recognition and pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control with lane centering is included, too, and it works as advertised, attentively adjusting speed based on traffic conditions and doing a commendable job keeping my tester in the middle of its lane. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are both standard on all grades, too, which is great news.
Thanks to its crazy fuel efficiency and lounge-like interior, the new Sienna is an all-star minivan.

The Sienna’s looks have grown on me since I first checked out a prototype model, but that front end, which was inspired by Japanese bullet trains, is still a bit much, with its massive grille and swept-back headlamps. But hey, I appreciate Toyota taking a risk here, and things do get better the further back you go. This minivan’s powerful rear fenders flow neatly into its distinctive taillights, giving it a shapely look in profile. The molded-resin tailgate is also surprisingly stylish, with its integrated spoiler.
A base, front-wheel-drive, LE version of the 2021 Toyota Sienna starts at $35,635, including $1,175 in destination fees. The range-topping, all-wheel-drive Platinum model shown here stickers for around $51,460, which is still a reasonable sum. I say “around” because it’s a prototype model; an official figure is not available at the time this is published.
There’s not too much competition in the minivan segment right now. Having reviewed most of the available contenders, at the end of the day, I think Honda’s Odyssey is a bit better to drive and the Chrysler Pacifica more attractive, but this Toyota is still an undeniably good family transporter, especially with those throne-like second-row seats and stellar fuel economy.

2021 Toyota Venza Price, Specs, Dimensions - It's been five years since the last Toyota Venza roamed the streets. And many have been begging Toyota to bring back its popular to row crossover. So here to listen and here comes two brand-new 2021 Toyota Venza. And here's the first look at this brand-new crossover set to debut the summer of 2020. in case you aren't familiar, Toyota Venza is a two-row crossover that is slightly bigger than a Rav4. But somewhat smaller than a three-row highlander. There's ample room for five within, and Toyota is set to make this new SUV the most comfortable tech and fuel-efficient crossover in this class.
2021 Toyota Venza Exterior It's hard to describe the outside. It's a blend of several Toyota products. The front has a rounded shape compared to the Highlander, although the grille opening, on the lower bumper, and the slip moldings on the side is very similar. The headlights and daytime running light patterns are very distinctive. Now on the side, you could see the wide wheel fenders like the Highlander and the new Sienna. But you could definitely tell the new Venza is shorter in wheelbase and in overall length. The Venza le comes with 18 and two-tone alloy wheels while. The axle and limited will come with 19 inch super chrome finish wheels. The rear has a distinctive LED taillight design as well as a LED bar that stretches from one side to the other. Also, you see a pair of exhaust tips on the bottom. The new Venza is built on the TNG platform and has extensive use of high-strength steel. The front and rear multi-link suspension provides a comfortable and quiet ride. The TNG platform is also built to defend against noise intrusion, and it curbs vibrations. Toyota wants to make sure that a new Venza provides a very quiet ride. The tire noise is reduced via strategically placed insulation. And acoustic glass windshield helps minimize wind noise. There's also sound blocking absorbing insulation throughout the structure underneath the carpeting and above the headliner. There's also sound-absorbing insulation around the engine compartment, which helps reduce intake noise. And two special resonance chambers help minimize air intake noise in the five-thirty and six-fifty Hertz range. I don't know how special those frequencies are, but if Toyota says blocking them is good, then it's good in my book as well.
2021 Toyota Venza Interior On the inside, Toyota is offering an elegant interior filled with plenty of techs. For starters, the infotainment screen comes an 8-inch standard. But the XLI unlimited can get the giant twelve points three-inch touchscreen display as well as a JBL premium audio system that comes with nine speakers in a 1200 watt amp. Apple car plays android auto is standard. 2021 Toyota Venza is the very first Toyota that will offer a stargaze fix panoramic glass roof. Drivers can switch from transparent to frosted modes within a single second using the control button. And even in frosted mode, the stargaze brightens interior while reducing direct sunlight. I honestly can't wait to see this in action, and I hope future Toyota's are gonna be adopting this technology. Also, a 10-inch heads-up display Digital, rearview mirror, bird's-eye view camera system, rear camera cleaning system, hands-free power liftgate are just some of the features you can opt for with this brand new 2021 Toyota Venza. There are also available heated seats and ventilated seats that are drawing cool air from the AC system. This technology first appeared as sflow on Lexus, and now it's available in the Venza. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert on a high beam, lane tracing assist, road sign assist is now standard. Additionally, blind-spot monitoring plus cross-traffic alert is also standard. While the XLE and Limited trims add-on from rear parking assist with auto braking. Just like the Sienna, the 2021 Venza is hybrid only. And utilizes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine along with 3 separate motors. The system delivers a total of 219 horsepower and is down from the 243 from the new Sienna and also the Highlander Hybrid. A new Venza in the LE trims will get 40 miles per gallon combined with fuel economy. If this is true, it will beat the Highlander Hybrid by 5 miles per gallon. There will also be selectable driving modes normal, eco, and sport. And the Venza has another trick up its sleeve in terms of increasing fuel economy. Venza PD predictive efficient drive will utilize the navigation system to analyze driving habits. And memorize road and traffic conditions to help optimize hybrid battery charging. When the driver selects PD, the system will learn from repeater routes. And it's designed to make the vehicle predict to slow down or stop. PD can also help optimize battery charging and discharging of hills or traffic congestion, this is very cool technology. The Venza also comes standard with all-wheel-drive. This electronic on-demand all-wheel drive employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power two rear wheels when needed. Torque distribution varies according to conditions. The Priciest 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Minivan Now Pushes $55,000(!)
Car shoppers won’t bat an eye shelling out $50,000-plus for a luxury SUV. But for some reason, the idea of paying the same amount for a minivan can be a hard pill to swallow. Once loaded up with options, today’s minivans can easily get up to $50K or more—and believe it or not, they sell. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica’s new Pinnacle trim level is the latest to push the minivan pricing envelope with its starting price just under $55,000.
The Pinnacle slots above the previous range-topper, the already classy Limited trim, and is priced accordingly at $54,885. For comparison, the most expensive Honda Odyssey, the 2021 Odyssey Elite, starts at $48,940. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet for the all-hybrid 2021 Toyota Sienna lineup, but the outgoing 2020 Sienna Limited Premium AWD started at $50,590.
For the Pinnacle’s nearly $55K sticker price you get standard all-wheel drive (a new-for-2021 option for the Pacifica lineup), quilted Caramel Nappa leather seats, lumbar pillows for the second-row captain’s chairs, an exclusive center console design with Caramel accent stitching and dual-level storage, a unique instrument cluster with Mid-century Timber Hydro faux wood bezels, black suede headliner, and Satin Chrome switchgear and interior trim. On the outside, the Pinnacle is distinguishable by its unique 20-inch wheels, grille surround, moldings, and badging all finished in Platinum Chrome.
The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle AWD builds on the equipment list of the Limited with a standard Safety Sphere package, which includes a 360-degree camera and ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist and Front Park Assist. FamCam, Chrysler’s answer to Honda’s CabinWatch, comes standard along with a Uconnect Theater rear entertainment system and 19-speaker Harman-Kardon audio system. The Pinnacle trim level is also available on the front-wheel-drive-only Pacifica Hybrid starting at $52,340.
Of course, you don’t have to go whole hog when buying a Chrysler minivan. The 2021 Chrysler Voyager, the budget version of the Pacifica that doesn’t receive an exterior refresh—meaning it looks the same as the ’20 Pacifica—starts at just $28,730. At that price you get third-row Stow ‘n Go seats (but not folding second-row chairs), a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available active safety features like pedestrian automatic emergency braking and Forward Collision Warning-Plus.
The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Touring starts at $36,540, while the upgraded Touring L is priced from $39,640. The Pacifica’s new AWD feature is a $2,995 option on either trim. The Limited trim starts at $49,885 and includes AWD as standard when equipped with the 287-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. Opt for the plug-in Limited Hybrid, however, and the starting price drops to $47,340.
The cheapest 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the Touring model, which starts at $41,490. As before, the Pacifica Hybrid delivers a combined 260 hp from its 3.6-liter V-6 and two electric motors, along with an all-electric range of 30 miles on a fully charged battery. The Pacifica Hybrid has a total driving range of more than 500 miles, though the tradeoff is losing the option of second-row Stow ‘n Go seats and AWD.

2021 Toyota Sienna minivan goes hybrid-only with a radical new design
Toyota’s Sienna minivan has been given a radical, bullet-train-inspired makeover.

It’s been over a decade since the current, third-generation Toyota Sienna minivan debuted, and in recent years, it’s grown a bit stale, overtaken by newer rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. But Toyota on Monday officially unveiled the new 2021 Sienna, which has been redesigned from the ground up and is gunning for the minivan segment crown. This fourth-generation Sienna was designed by CALTY’s Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, design teams, but it looks wholly Japanese. Toyota describes the new Sienna as “bold, sexy and provocative,” and says the front end’s massive grille was inspired by the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train. More than anything, it reminds me of the awesome, boxy, overstyled JDM minivans that we don’t get in the US.
I don’t think the Sienna looks as outright aggressive as other recent Toyota models, and that’s a good thing. The bulging rear fender is lifted from the Highlander but looks more natural and soft here, and there are a number of nice, subtle surfacing changes like the lines coming off the LED headlights. The rear is a bit more angular, with slim LED taillights and a lot of creases, and the tailgate has a slight whiff of a ducktail spoiler. An XSE model (the one shown in red) gets a sportier body kit, dark 20-inch wheels and different interior trimmings.

Toyota gave the interior a radical overhaul, too. The automaker says minivan owners don’t want to feel like they’re driving a bus, so the wide dashboard is more similar in design to the brand’s SUVs. It’s got a high-mounted infotainment display and a nice mix of colors and materials, and it looks more upscale overall. The biggest change is a huge “bridge console” between the front seats that’s connected to the dash, which Toyota says is positioned for better ergonomics and comfort. That console offers cup holders, a wireless phone charger and some additional storage compartments, while the open area underneath is large enough to fit a purse or a backpack.
But I’m most interested in the second row of seats. The new Sienna has available as an option Super Long Slide captain’s chairs, which can slide up to 25 inches fore and aft. These reclining seats can be equipped with built-in ottomans, too. Lower trims get three-across seats in the second row with a stowable middle seat. On the top trims the seats are covered in leather with both heating and ventilation for the front two occupants, while the second row can be heated. (The second-row seats aren’t removable and can’t fold, though, due to integrated side airbags.)

New platform, new powertrain
The new Sienna rides on Toyota’s modular TNGA-K platform, the same one underpinning cars like the Camry, Avalon and Highlander. Compared with the 2020 model, the new generation is 3.1 inches longer overall and rides on a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, and it’s slightly wider and a little lower in height. Toyota worked to make the new Sienna quieter and less affected by external vibrations, as well.
For the first time, the Sienna is available as a hybrid — and only as a hybrid. The sole powertrain is the same basic setup found in other Toyota hybrid models like the RAV4, using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a battery pack mounted under the front seats. The Sienna’s hybrid system puts out 243 total horsepower, 53 hp less than the current model’s V6 engine. But power isn’t the point: Toyota says it estimates the 2021 Sienna will get 33 miles per gallon combined, way better than the 21 mpg that the 2020 Sienna gets. It also bests the Odyssey and Pacifica, both of which use V6 engines and get 22 mpg combined.
Toyota wanted the Sienna’s interior to feel less like that of a bus.

Not giving the Sienna a plug is intentional, Toyota says, and there are no plans for a PHEV version. A lot of Sienna owners are repeat customers, so the new one needed to feel familiar, with no need to plug it in to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition to the standard three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, the 2021 Sienna has a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for all hybrid components including the battery.
All-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels, with the system using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels instead of a traditional transfer case and driveshaft (no word on if it adds any extra horsepower). It’s able to send up to 80% of torque to the rear wheels, and Toyota says the all-wheel-drive model is more agile in the corners. I expect the AWD Sienna to get slightly worse fuel economy than the FWD model, though Toyota hasn’t released official numbers.

The 2021 Sienna has multiple driving modes including one for EV-only operation (for very short distances at low speeds), and there’s an adjustable regenerative braking feature that mimics the act of downshifting, ideal for hilly terrain. A new Predictive Efficient Drive feature remembers driving habits, road conditions and repeated routes to optimize when the battery is charged by the hybrid system. This feature is also found in the new 2021 Venza hybrid.
Like the current Sienna, the new one is able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, and it has an available 120-volt AC outlet and 1,500-watt inverter to power gear and accessories. Toyota will offer accessories from Yakima that have been designed for the Sienna including a bike rack, cross bars and a rooftop carrier. Who needs an SUV when you have a minivan?
I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this the best-looking Sienna ever.

Segment-first tech and features
More than anything, minivans are all about interior functionality, and the 2021 Sienna has it in spades. There are as many as 18 cup holders, six more than the maximum offered by the 2020 model. Standard equipment for every Sienna includes power sliding doors, auto up/down windows, three-zone automatic climate control and second-row sunshades. Climbing the trim level ladder — LE, Limited, XSE and Platinum — adds features like kick-activated sliding doors and power tailgate, four-zone auto climate control, a sunroof, sunshades for the third row and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel that’s also heated. The Limited trim gets a built-in vacuum and storage box, while the Platinum replaces the box with a refrigerator.
The “base” infotainment setup is a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM capability, six speakers and seven USB ports. Moving up in the trim levels adds HD Radio, onboard Wi-Fi, navigation and a 1,200-watt JBL audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer. There’s an available 11.6-inch rear entertainment system with 1080p resolution and an HDMI input, a remote controller and a pair of wireless headphones. A 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster can show hybrid system info, while an optional 10-inch head-up display can project navigation info, as well.

Toyota
Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver assist features is standard across the board, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Every 2021 Sienna has 10 airbags, including curtain airbags for all three rows and the aforementioned side airbags built into the first and second-row seats. A digital rearview mirror and a 360-degree camera with a curb view are new options, and there’s also a rear-seat occupant reminder system.
Toyota hasn’t released any pricing yet, but the Sienna will go on sale toward the end of the year and will continue to be built at Toyota’s plant in Indiana. It will have to face still-tough competition in the form of the face-lifted Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey and an upcoming next-gen Kia Sedona. 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Swallow Your Pride – This Beats an SUV
For most Americans, a minivan is the best people-hauler for the demographic called parents-with-kids-and-all-their-crap. And the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan serves the demographic better than virtually every other sports utility vehicle or minivan. You can have a Pacifica sort-of-inexpensive or trimmed in leather, with or without hiding stowable second-and-third-row seats, or as a plug-in hybrid, all with third-row seats usable by adults. Come 2021, you’ll again be able to get the Pacifica with all-wheel-drive.
The Pacifica handles relatively well. The plug-in hybrid goes 32 miles on battery power and has a battery-plus-engine cruising range of 520 miles. It is roomier and lighter than a full-size SUV. On the downside, some useful driver assists are optional on the Pacifica. Pacifica’s reliability from recent years past is not on par with competing minivans, especially from Toyota and Kia.
The Pacifica is one of the few three-row vehicles comfortable in all three rows.
On the Road with Pacifica
I drove an upscale Pacifica Hybrid with a full suite of driver assists, the latest UConnect 4 infotainment system, and black leather seats with contrasting stitching. It feels roomier than a full-size SUV because it’s roughly the size of the full-size Dodge Durango SUV, 203.8 inches versus the Durango’s 201.2. With a shorter nose and without the sloping rear of some SUVs, plus a couple more inches of width than Durango, there’s a lot more room in the Pacifica for people and cargo inside.
Handling is pretty good for something that weighs a handful of pounds shy of 5,000. It gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds via a 3.6-liter V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine (higher efficiency, lower peak power) and an electric motor that net 260 hp, all driving the front wheels. Once in a while during testing, the nine-speed automatic was slow to shift or thunked into the next gear. The shifter is a rotary knob on the dashboard. Most reviewers hate shifter knobs (or buttons). I say: They leave more room for cupholders and phones on the dash or console. Nobody manually shifts a minivan. This knob would work better if it was coated in grippy rubber.
The infotainment system and navigation, called UConnect and now up to version 4, continues to be one of the easier packages to comprehend. The display is 8 inches diagonal, which is good, but a 10-inch display would be nicer (likely on 2021 models).
2020 Chrysler Pacifica.
The Pacifica excels three ways:
Around town, driving is almost zero-cost because the 16-kWh battery tucked under the floor lets you cover 32 miles of commuting to work, car-pooling, and handling daily driving tasks. It will recharge overnight on 120-volt power, or in about two hours at 240 volts. Many owners won’t burn any gasoline most days of the week, although maybe you might, because there’s no button to force the Pacifica to run electric-only before going to the combustion engine. So Chrysler uses an algorithm to decide when to use what. In a week of driving, I averaged 29 mpg, close to Chrysler’s 30 mpg EPA overall rating, which is quite good for a 2.5-ton vehicle.
Second, on longer weekend or vacation trips, you get up to 520 miles of driving. You only have to fill up once a day. Yes, the kids have to go pee more often than that, but the interstate service area choreography of one parent taking the kids to the bathroom while the other heads for the fueling islands, then meeting up while the refueler parent dashes back to the restrooms, seems to save very little time.
For weekday carpooling tasks and weekend family trips, you can fit up to seven people; the middle row is always two buckets, not a bench. And everybody, in every seating position, is plenty comfortable, especially in the hybrid. The under-floor battery means there’s no space for the stowable (Stow ‘N Go) seats that fold into the floor, but those stowable seats are thinner and less comfortable. The comfier PHEV’s seats are heavy to take out, though.
The Pacifica has upscale finishes on most trim lines. The UConnect 4 center stack display is 8.4 inches.
Lots of Trim Lines
Shopping for a Chrysler Pacifica starts with “Where do I start?” There are eight Pacifica gas-engine versions, five of them called Pacifica Touring (gut none called Pacifica Car Pooling); plus six Pacifica Hybrid versions; plus more two gas-engine entry model Pacificas, only they’re called Chrysler Voyagers (explanation below). As for the hybrid models, there are three Touring models (Touring, Touring, 35th Anniversary Touring L) and three Limited models (Limited, Limited 35th Anniversary, Limited Red S). The hybrid 35th Anniversary (of the first Chrysler Corp. minivans) and S models are upholstery, badging, and paint variants. If this sounds confusing, it is, and there’s not much on the Chrysler Pacifica website that helps you see what features are on what trim lines.
The least costly hybrid, the Touring, is $41,490 including $1,495 freight. That is $6,250 more than the gas-engine Touring, but you are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, so really it costs less. The Touring gets you power-sliding doors, heated mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, three-zone climate control, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB jacks. Driver assists are blind-spot warning/rear-cross-traffic-alert (same system) and rear parking sonar. No forward-facing driver assists.
The Touring L, $45,780 including freight, may be the sweet spot: It adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. But it, too, lacks a full range of driver assists.
The Limited, $47,340, is where you can add a fuller array of driver assists. It has nicer leather, vented front seats, navigation, UConnect Theater (rear entertainment), and 20-speaker audio. For $995 you can add the Advanced Safety Tec Group: stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, advanced forward collision warning, advanced lane departure warning, parallel/perpendicular parking assist, front sonar (rear is standard) with auto-stop, and surround cameras. You can also add a $1,895 panoramic sunroof.
The top-line Hybrid Limited Red S fully optioned runs $52,000, before tax credit.
Be still my heart: the 1984 Dodge Caravan, enabler of the soccer mom demographic. It’s also 28 inches shorter than today’s Pacifica.
The Shrinking Minivan Market
Minivans as we know them date to the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, boxy vehicles, some with woodgrain wrap on the sides. They helped keep Chrysler Corp. alive. (The vehicles, not necessarily the woodgrain.) Sales of minivans, all brands, peaked in 2000 with 1.4 million sold, 8 percent of the year’s 17 million sales. Most had three rows of seats, and even the third row was reasonably comfortable at a time when there were far fewer SUVs. And they drove like cars at a time when SUVs didn’t.
Minivans were popular with college-educated boomer parents in the suburbs who drove their children to sports practices a lot, had similar-to-each-other buying patterns, got involved in the PTA, and tended to vote. Demographers called them soccer moms or soccer parents, which annoyed the heck out of them, more because soccer mom was too easily understood as well as misunderstood. In retaliation – “how dare these people reduce me to two words” – they switched to SUVs that were bigger, top-heavier, tipsier (until electronic stability control came along), cost you 3-5 mpg in fuel economy, and lacked room for teens in row three. Nothing like seeing six kids in shorts and cleats disembark from a GMC Yukon Denali, not a Pacifica, to prove you’re not a soccer dad or mom.
Fast forward to 2019, and sales of the five minivan models (plus leftover Chrysler Town & Countrys) amounted to just over 400,000, or 2 percent of the (again) 17 million sales of light vehicles. The best-seller Dodge Grand Caravan gets the majority of sales in fleet markets, making the Honda Odyssey and Pacifica the top two sellers to individuals.

Between 2000 and today, more than a dozen minivan brands departed the market: Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Venture, Chrysler Voyager, Ford Freestar, Ford Windstar Cargo, Mazda MPV, Mercury Monterey, Nissan Quest, Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Montana, Saturn Relay, and Volkswagen Routan. The one significant entrant is the Kia Sedona in the 2015 model year.
In 2020, the aging Dodge Grand Caravan goes away this spring, to be replaced by the Chrysler Voyager, effectively an entry-level Pacifica. That will likely be the rental-fleet minivan. Insiders say the two-name strategy helps the residual value of the Pacifica. Any time more than half the sales for a model go into fleets, it depresses resale prices.
The 2020 Pacifica measures 203.8 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 69.9 inches high. This allows for superb cargo space: 32.3 cubic feet with all seats used, and 140.5 cubic feet with the middle and rear seats down.
Should You Buy?
If you do a lot of urban driving, you’ll likely love how much of it can be on electricity, where the cost of electricity (low) is equivalent in cost to the Pacifica getting 82 mpg on gasoline. It is roomy on legroom as well as side to side shoulder room, so you really can get three across in back.
The Pacifica scores well on IIHS safety tests: good overall on crashworthiness, and a Top Safety Pick. However, it’s light on standard driver safety assists: Blind spot warning is standard, plus government-required features such as a rear camera. If you want a fuller range of assists that help especially on long highway trips, you’ll really want one of the Limited trims and the features of the Advanced Safety Tec package.
Only when you reach the Limited are significant additional driver assists offered in an options package.
Against the competition, the same money, roughly, will get you the sensational Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade three-row SUVs with less space and a premium-car fit and finish. Against other SUVs, the Honda Odyssey is well-thought-out and so is the Toyota Sienna, which is the only minivan to offer all-wheel-drive. The Kia Sedona, less flashy, has rock-solid build quality and reliability on its side. Consumer Reports rates recent Sedonas at 3, 4 or 5 of 5, while the Pacifica is rated at 1 or 2 out of 5.
The Chrysler Pacifica has been out since the 2017 model year. It gets a significant refresh for the 2021 model year with all-wheel-drive offered on the gas-engine Pacifica only (Chrysler last had an AWD minivan in 2004). Chrysler could have redirected the PHEV’s electric power to the rear wheels for all-wheel-drive (as Toyota has done to create AWD on a front-drive car), but chose not to. There’s a new, version 5, of UConnect Drive by Android software. And there’ll be an additional trim line at the top end, called Pinnacle. To keep up with the competition, the 2021 Pacifica will make standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning/lane-keeping assistance.

2021 Honda Odyssey Gets More Features—and More Expensive

Along with a refreshed exterior design, the 2021 Honda Odyssey benefits from additional standard features and second row seats that are easier to remove. Today, Honda has released prices for the updated minivan that goes on sale August 3.
The base Odyssey LX starts at $32,910, an increase of $1,000 from the 2020 model year. Keep in mind that this trim gains Honda Sensing technologies as standard equipment. This suite includes collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and other safety features. LED headlights and Rear Seat Reminder also make their way to the standard features list.
Step up to the EX trim, and you get additional niceties including dual power sliding doors, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and tri-zone automatic climate control. This model is $400 more expensive this year.
EX-L vehicles are slightly fancier, boasting a one-touch power moonroof and leather-trimmed interior. For the new model year, the trim gains front passenger power lumbar adjustment. Technophiles will enjoy the five USB ports. Like the EX, prices have increased by $400.
Near the top of the lineup is the Touring, which features a rear entertainment system that kids will like, and a camera that allows the driver to keep tabs on the backseat, which kids will appreciate less. Honda has added two front sensors for a full suite of front and rear parking sensors. New 19-inch alloy wheels round off the updates. However, a few big features that were once standard on the Touring now require moving up a trim. Perhaps that’s why the model is $2,560 cheaper than last year.
The cream of the crop is Elite. On this trim, you’ll find a hands-free access power tailgate, vacuum, and a wireless phone charger. Ambient lighting on the instrument panel and perforated leather seats are new for 2021. Prices have jumped $400.
