Day 20: Lost & Found

Austin, Texas- 1999

Another day, another town, Henry thought to himself as he stared blankly out of the window. He was sitting in the backseat of his dad’s 1967 Chevy impala with his twin brother, Sam. In the front seat were Dad and Dean, his older brother. Sam was poring over a book Bobby Singer had let him borrow on their last visit with him while Dean and Dad talked about their latest hunt over the low murmur of the radio. That left Henry by himself, staring out the window as the city passed by.

Dad had gotten a call from another hunter a couple of days ago. That hunter had caught wind of a case here, in Austin, but couldn’t handle it himself due to some outstanding warrants against him from a few years ago. According to recent reports, children 12 and under had been going missing all over the city and turning up a week or two later with their hearts ripped out. Worried parents were keeping their little ones close while the police scratched their heads, as was the usual score when a group of sick monsters decided to prey on kids. Someone had to save the day, put everyone’s minds at ease. So, in came the Winchesters.

“Alright,” Dad said, killing the engine. Henry blinked and looked towards the front seat, not realizing they’d stopped. “Sammy, Henry, you’re coming with me so we can get you enrolled. Dean’s gonna find us a place to stay while we’re here and go check in with the local cops. Get your good journalist badge and get as much as you can that isn’t already in the papers. We’ll catch up with you later and then you and I’ll go in as FBI.” He tossed Dean the keys and kicked open his door. “Once we’re done here, you two can sniff out some dinner, maybe talk to some of the parents in the area and see if they know anything about the kids that went missing. There’s gotta be more to it than age.”

“Yessir,” came the simultaneous reply from all three brothers. Dean slid into the driver’s seat while Sam and Henry got out and stretched their legs. The twins then followed their dad into the school. Henry frowns softly, noting this one was much nicer than the ones Dad usually sent them to. It was a far cry from the average low-end public schools all of the brothers frequented in their illustrious academic careers. Sacred Hearts High School, huh? One glance at Sam told him his brother was thinking the same thing. 

“Dad?” Sam ventured. “Why are we here?”

“Because this is the only place in the city that would take you on in the middle of the school year without asking too many questions. It’s a Christain place, nice and accommodating.”

Figures. The last thing John Winchester needed (or wanted) was people asking questions about him and his kids. That meant he’d enroll them in whatever school just did the paperwork without asking for more than a recent transcript. Still, this place was way above the usual standard.

“By the way, this is a private school. That means you two gotta be on your best behavior. I don’t need to get a phone call in the middle of an investigation because one of you decided to get in a fight.”

Henry bit his tongue to keep himself from pointing out that it was usually Dean that got into fights at school and the only reason he ever got a call about him or Sam was because someone noticed a weird bruise or scar and decided to make assumptions about the kind of father John Winchester was. It was usually better to steer clear of criticizing the Good Son.

“We never get into fights, Dad. That was Dean’s thing,” Sam retorted, still well-rooted in his rebel stage. Not that Henry didn’t have a rebellious streak of his own, mind you. He just knew when to pick his battles. Sam did too, in theory; he just liked to pick all of them.

Dad set his jaw and clenched his fists. Henry sighed inwardly and nudged Sam with his elbow. They didn’t need this, not now. It was one thing to pick a fight with Dad when he was going to be a few towns over. But they were all gonna be in the same motel room this time and who knew how long this hunt was going to last? Sam nudged him right back but he didn’t say anything else. Small victories counted, especially when small motel rooms were on the line.

The principal escorted them out of the building with a “Blessed day to you!” after the enrollment process was finished. Henry rolled his eyes since she could only see the back of his head. The past three hours had been yet another exciting process of a principal being “just delighted” to have a student like Sam joining their school and outlining their various academic clubs he could join and “get us on the Mathelete map!” before picking up Henry’s transcript and doing a very poor job of hiding their disappointment at not having two child prodigies in front of them. He was pretty sure Dad put Sam’s transcript first to make them look better but every now and then, he wished the orders got switched so people would get a pleasant surprise instead of crushing disappointment. Henry’s grades weren’t bad, per se. He was a solid C student. Hell, he could probably pull a B if he really wanted to. But academics were Sam’s thing, not his, and contrary to popular belief, being twins didn’t mean you were both good at the same things. Sammy was better at words and numbers, Henry was better at guns and physical combat. If Sam really tried, he could deck anybody he damn well pleased and if Henry really tried, he could raise his GPA. But they knew where their strengths were and that was fine.

The three of them walked together until they were out of sight. Then, Sam and Henry split off towards a local park where they could kill time while Dean and Dad did investigation stuff that they weren’t old enough to help on yet. After an hour or two, they’d go pick up some cheap food and wait for the Impala to pick them up and take them to whatever room Dean managed to scare up. Henry  hoped there were twin beds available; at least then there was a 50/50 chance of him not ending up on the floor.

Stupid small motel rooms, he thought, kicking small rocks out of his way as they walked. “How long do you think we’ll be in town this time?” he asked aloud for no reason in particular.

Sam shrugged. “A month or two probably. Austins a big city but there’s only so many places for monsters to hide and Dad’s one of the best in the business.”

So like usual then. Great. Just once, he’d like to stick around somewhere long enough to make a friend or two, even if he’d probably never speak to them again after. It’d be nice to know there was someone out there that thought about him just because. Not that his family didn’t care about him. He knew they did. But...he couldn’t help but feel this divide in the middle of it. Dean and Dad were on one side, the ones that remembered Mother Mary in all her glory, while Sam and Henry were on the other, the ones that didn’t know shit. Even then, there was a divide, where Sam was the one that got the attention (a lot of it bad) from Dad and extra protection from Dean (for reasons unknown), while Henry was mostly ignored by anyone that wasn’t Sam (and he wasn’t entirely sure that was a good thing). Point is, Henry always thought it would  be nice to have someone on the outside of all that. 

“Do you think Dad’ll let us help this time?” asked Sam.

Henry shrugged. “He already asked us to look for clues.”

“I mean with the hunting part.” 

He shrugged again. “Probably. It’s supposed to be a decent-sized pack so he’ll need the manpower if nothing else. Why?”

“Just curious.”

“Uh-huh….” Henry decided to let it drop. Sam’s rebelliousness went through cycles of either wanting nothing to do with hunting and resenting Dad for having them help out or wanting to dive right into hunting and resenting Dad for “treating them like kids” and not letting them do as much as he wanted to do. That kind of question could go in either direction and he didn’t really want anything to do with it. 

“Heads up!”

Henry spun around and deftly caught the football that was headed right for him. He looked up and saw a sandy-haire kid around his age sprinting toward him. The kid held his hands out and Henry nodded, tossing the ball back with a perfect arc. “Nice catch,” the kid complimented when he came up. “Name’s Hoyt. Who’re you?”

“Henry.”

The kid- Hoyt- smiled and clapped him on the shoulder. “I could use a guy like you on my team. We’re kinda gettin’ clobbered out there. Wanna join?”

Henry was about to say ‘yes’ but Sam pulled on his sleeve. “No thanks, we gotta go. See you around.”

“I-Okay. See ya!” Hoyt shrugged and jogged back to what looked like a casual football game. Henry silently wished he could join as he followed Sam away. 

“What does Dad even want us to find out? There’s no little kids out here; all the parents are too scared to let them out, even with supervision. And the ones that aren’t probably don’t wanna talk to two random teenagers!” Henry sighed internally and let Sam go on his little rant. It seemed they were back on the How dare Father force his children to hunt? side of the pendulum this time. “Whatever, come on, let's go to the library. They’ll have newspapers there and I- we can find a pattern.”

How nice of you to include me…. This was going to be a long hunt.

Sam settled in with the newspapers with ease, spare notepad and pencil at the ready for making note of relevant details. Henry sat across from him and tried to help. He really did. But, while Sam could read for hours on end, he only had so much time before he just couldn’t focus anymore and it was a waste of time for both of them. “Gonna go look for a snack,” he muttered as he stood up. Sam barely acknowledged it, nose buried in his work. That was fine.

One good thing about being in a big city is their libraries usually have nicer things, like newer computers and vending machines. Unfortunately, that also led to them having better security. Also unfortunately, the vending machines at this library weren’t the easy-to-hack ones they usually came across in dingy motels. He could pony up some of his coin stash but it was better to keep those for payphones. Then again...the hallway the vending machines were in was pretty deserted...and that lock looked pretty easy. He reached into his pocket for the kit. 

“Excuse me, young man? What are you doing?”

Henry turned to see a stern librarian frowning down her nose at him. He swallowed hard and stuffed his hands in his jacket pocket. “Nothing, ma’am.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “This area of the library is for staff only. If you want a snack, you’re free to use the public vending machines in the front lobby.”

He nodded. “Yes, ma’am….” He turned and walked back to the main area of the library. He heard her heels clicking on the tile not far behind him so he turned toward the maze of bookshelves in the hopes that he’d lose her. He wandered down a random aisle, trying not to look suspicious. That’s when it happened. “It” being him running square into someone else and both of them falling to the ground. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, helping them pick up their books.

“It’s okay. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

He raised his eyes as he handed her the last book and froze. Somehow, he’d managed to literally run into the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. Possibly the most beautiful girl ever. Not that he knew enough girls to know that. But still. 

She looked up and met his eyes, a small smile on her face. “I’m Emily, by the way.”

“Emily….” That was a nice name. Very pretty, even when he said it. He liked it. “My name is Henry.”

“Nice to meet you.” She stood up with her small stack of books and he stood with her. “Are you new here? I haven’t seen you around before is all….”

Henry nodded. “Yeah, my family just moved into town.”

She tilted her head curiously. “In the middle of the school year? That must be rough…”

He shrugged. It was just his life and that was hardly the roughest part of it all. “We move around a lot because of my dad’s job. I’m pretty used to being the new kid at just about any time of year.”

She nodded sympathetically. “Do you know where you’re going to school yet?”

“Yeah; me and my brother just enrolled at Sacred Hearts High.” Who was he? When did he become the type of person that just told people things about his life? Dad would have an aneurysm if he heard any of this.

Her smile brightened and Henry thought it was even prettier like that. “No way! That’s where I go to school. Maybe we can meet up and I can introduce you to some of my friends? You know, so you won’t be the loner new kid.”

“Sure, sounds great.”

“Awesome! Meet me in front of the school before class starts.” Someone called her name and she gave him an apologetic half-shrug. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said before turning toward the voice and walking away.

“See you….” Henry stood there and watched her walk away. He’s not sure how long he was there but it would’ve been much longer if he hadn’t heard Sam calling for him. He shook his head and walked away. He hoped Emily was serious about introducing him to her friends. He’d like to make some real friends this time.

"We're kind of a package deal," the girl- Geri- cut in. "It's nice to meet you."

"Same. Shame we couldn't hang out more at the park," Hoyt said.

Henry shrugged. "Yeah, but we were busy."

Emily gave him a questioning look. "We?"

"Me and my brother Sam. He's already inside," Henry explained. "Speaking of, I should probably get in there too. I need to get my schedule and stuff."

"We'll go with you," Emily offered. "We can compare schedules and then we’ll walk you to your first period.

He smiled softly and they all walked into the building together. He already had a good feeling about this.

The bad news was: he only had one period with his new friends. The good news was: it was lunch period and they could actually talk and hang out and stuff. More bad news: his first class of the day was History. “It’s like they want me to fall asleep,” he complained as they walked.

“Oh, you’ll be fine. Mrs. Stratford is easy. She’s retiring this year and all she does is hand out fill-in-the-blank pages.” Emily smiled and nudged him as they came up to the classroom. “We’ll see you at lunch, okay?”

“See you.” He waved as they walked off to their own respective classes before heading into the room. He found an empty desk toward the  back of the room and sat down. No one paid him any mind and Mrs. Stratford didn’t even make him introduce himself to the class. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

The rest of the day passed the same way every first day at a new school did. He had to introduce himself to several groups of people who couldn’t care less, be informed of three different tests coming up that week he didn’t have proper time to prepare for, and, of course, he picked the worst lunch line and got a salad. He saved it for Sam; he was always going on about eating healthy.

Emily stopped him on his way out of the building. “Do you have anywhere to go right now?”

He shrugged. “I’m supposed to meet Sam at the library but I can do that later. What’s up?”

“Oh, good. I’ve got a babysitting gig to go to and my brother can’t drive me because he’s a dick. I don’t mind walking but it’s a long way and I hate going alone and I can’t take Geri or Hoyt with me because they’ve got practice.” Hoyt was on the football team and Geri did cheerleading, as Henry had learned during lunch. Emily would’ve done cheerleading too but her mother didn’t approve of the uniforms.

“I can walk with you.”

Emily smiled. “Thanks; you’re a lifesaver.”

You have no idea….

Emily explained that she was going to be meeting her charge at the park. “Normally I’d meet him at home but with all the kidnappings going around, they don’t like him walking home alone and the usual carpool is busy today.” She told him a little about the kid, Liam. He was eight years old (and seven months and three days, give or take), super smart for his age (apparently he already had plans for Harvard) and he was a bit shy “but he’s super sweet once you get to know him.” She sighed. “I kinda feel bad though; I’m gonna have to stop babysitting him. I got a new job in town that pays better but his mom tells me I’m, like, the only babysitter they’ve had that he actually likes. I’ve only got a few more days with him.”

“That sucks,” Henry said. He remembered what it was like being dumped on babysitters every other day. Some were cool, most of them tried to do as little as they could and still get paid. It sucked. “But Austin’s a big city; I’m sure his parents can find someone else.”

“I hope so….”

After almost half an hour of walking, they arrived at the park where Emily was meant to pick up Liam. “Thanks for walking with me. I’m trying to save up money for a car but you know how it is.”

Henry did not know how it was but that didn’t seem relevant. “No problem. I was happy to help.” He scanned the kids, trying to find one that matched Liam's description. There weren’t many of them, which was odd considering the time of day. Then again, he imagined most parents were probably wary about letting their kids be unsupervised for too long when abduction was a prominent threat.

Suddenly, Emily gasped and took off towards a big tree. “Liam! Hey, leave him alone!”

Henry followed her, eyes narrowing when he saw the situation. A small, thin, blond kid (Liam, he assumed) was cornered against the tree surrounded by a group of bigger kids. He couldn’t see what was happening in their little huddle but he imagined it wasn’t good. He sped up ahead of Emily and reached the group first. “Hey,” he said in the deepest voice he could muster. “Is there a problem here?”

One of the big kids, presumably the leader of the group, turned around and looked up. “None of your business,” he sneered.

“Too bad, already made it my business.” Henry shrugged. “Why don’t you leave the kid alone?”

“Because he’s a wimp.” A round of snickers passed along the group and Liam ducked his head, cheeks burning with embarrassment.

Henry rolled his eyes. “Of course. Typical loser shit.”

The leader narrowed his eyes and puffed his chest out. “What do you mean?”

“I mean only loser picks on wimps. You wanna prove you’re really tough? Fight someone bigger than you. Alone. Ganging up on a little kid is just pathetic, honestly.” By now, Emily had caught up with him, huffing and puffing as she tried to catch her breath.

“James,” She said in a warning tone. “Do I need to fetch your mother and tell her what you’re up to?”

The leader- James, apparently- paled and shook his head. “N-No.”

“Then beat it,” she snapped, taking a frightening step forward for good measure. James and the other kids scrambled, leaving Liam alone against the tree. Emily’s face immediately softened and she knelt beside the scared kid. “Hey, you’re okay.” She grabbed the Spiderman backpack that had been tossed to the side and handed it to him. “Let’s go home, okay?”

Liam nodded and slung his bag over his shoulder. Seeing him look so vulnerable stoked a protective fire in Henry he didn’t even know was there. Liam then looked up at him and graced him with a small smile. “Thanks for trying,” he murmured. 

Henry waved him off. “It was nothing, kid. I’m Henry, by the way.” He offered his hand for Liam to shake. 

Liam grabbed his hand with a surprisingly strong grip and shook it firmly. “I’m William. But my friends call me Liam.”

Henry smiled. “Alright, Liam it is. Nice to meet you.”

Emily smiled at them and reached to hold Liam’s hand. “We’re gonna walk to Liam’s home. Do you wanna come with us?”

He should say no. He had to meet Sam at the library for research and homework and then they’d have to go back to the motel and do their daily training. But...he wanted to keep talking to Emily. And Liam seemed at least a little happy about him maybe coming along. He could spare a few minutes, right? “Sure. Lead the way.”

The way Liam beamed at him and started chattering about his day once they got going made it impossible to say no when he asked Henry to stay and hang out once they got to the house. It was only a few games of hide and seek and he was already late anyway. Sure, he stayed for longer than that and ended up doing some homework with Emily during Laim’s snack but it’s not like he’d be doing anything different with Sam. He didn’t even realize what time it was until Liam’s mother, Abilene “Call me Abby” Walker got home to relieve Emily. The next thing he knew, Abby was asking him if he had any babysitting experience and talking about how much Liam seemed to like him. That, plus a glowing recommendation from Emily and a very convincing pouty face from Liam earned him $6/hr as Liam’s new sitter. Starting today, apparently. Abby handed him a piece of paper with the house number on it and told him to call later so they could work out a schedule.

The smile on Liam’s face made it worth it when Dad laid into him later for being late for training.

Two Weeks Later….

Henry really, really shouldn’t be getting this attached. He was only going to be here for a month, maybe two. He didn’t know why he was bothering, really. In a few weeks, it wouldn’t matter what Liam’s favorite snack was or where the best ice cream was or where his friends liked to hang out or that Emily looked stunning no matter how much she complained about the humidity. Because he was going to be gone soon. 

And yet, here he was, spending some of his hard earned money on Liam’s favorite candy because the kid had a test today and he’d probably be nervous about the results even though he was way smart. And while he was at it, he picked up some chocolate bars for Emily and Geri and Hoyt because they were his friends and he wanted to do something nice for them just because. He just wished the line would move faster because the bell for first period was going to ring soon and he wanted to have some time to hang out with his friends.

It felt strange to have a concern like that. A normal, everyday concern about the speed at which the line at the drugstore moved. It also felt strange to pay in cash that he earned and not coins that he found in between the couch cushions at whatever motel they were staying at. The past two weeks had felt really strange, if he was being honest. Strange because they felt so...normal. Like he wasn’t someone who moved around every few weeks and trained to hunt monsters after school. Like he was just a normal kid that went to school and had a babysitting gig.

Weird.

He managed to get to school in time to hang out with Emily and Hoyt and Geri before the first bell rang. "Hey, Henry!" Hoyt called. "You busy tonight?"

Henry shrugged. "I gotta watch Liam for a bit but I'll be out by dinner. Why?"

"We all thinkin' about sneakin' into a bar tonight. I got fake IDs for us." Hoyt presented the "IDs" in question and Henry laughed at their quality.

"Dude, I don't know how much you paid for those but they look like shit. You got ripped off. I can make something better than that."

Geri quirked an eyebrow. "Really?"

He nodded. "Yeah. My dad taught me how."

"Your dad taught you how to make fake IDs?" Emily asked slowly.

"Yeah." He knew it was weird, but he didn't really care. He trusted his friends.

She blinked at him. "...Okay then."

Hoyt cleared his throat. "So you wanna make some IDs for us?"

"I can. It'll take some time but I can just meet you guys at the bar. Where're we going?"

"The Side Step. We’ll be there at around 8 o’clock.”

Henry thought he remembered seeing that on the way into town. He would've asked for an address but the bell rang and it was time for them to go to class. But that didn’t matter. He’d figure it out later.

After school, he headed straight to the park to pick up Liam and walk him home. As expected, Liam was nervous about his Big Scary Unknown Test Score but the licorice Henry bought him calmed him down a bit. “I’m sure you did great,” he said as they walked. “You’re super smart and that’s your best class anyhow.”

“I know, but still. Mr. Stadler’s a super strict grader,” Liam complained.

“Have you ever failed one of his tests before?”

“...No….”

Henry shrugged. “Well, there you go then. I’m sure you did amazing.”

They walked in silence for a few moments before Liam spoke up. “Can you tell me some more map stories today?”

Henry smiled. Map Stories were an activity Henry thought of one day when Laim got tired of tag. He bought Liam a map and told him to pick a place at random. 90% of the time, he’d at least passed through there for a day or two and he told Liam something funny or weird that happened while he was there. Henry got to unload his stories on someone who was actually interested in listening and Liam got to hear some funny stories and also learn a little about maps and the US highway system while he was at it. “Sure, buddy; I got loads of ‘em.”

Liam beamed. “Sweet! Race you home!” he exclaimed, taking off in a sprint. Henry chuckled and jogged after him. He really liked this kid.

He wished he didn’t have to leave.

He had a few hours to kill between babysitting Liam and meeting the gang at the Side Step so he went back to the room to get ready and grab some of his spare cash for Kinkos to make the fake IDs. When he got there, Sam was the only one home, nose buried in a textbook as usual.

“Hey, I thought you were at the library?”

“They were doing an event; too much noise,” Sam explained.

That made sense. Henry dropped off his backpack and dug into his duffle bag for something decent to wear out. 

"Where are you going?" Sam asked.

"Out with some friends."

Sam snorted. "Since when do you make friends?"

Henry rolled his eyes. "Not everyone is a social shut-in, Sam. I like making friends."

"But what's the point? We just end up leaving and it's not like Dad lets us come back for visits."

"I don't know. Maybe it's just fun? Maybe I like hanging out with people that aren't you guys?" Maybe I like being around people that care?

"But there's no point. One day, you're just gonna drop off the face of the earth and then they'll just forget about you."

"Which is why I gotta have my fun while I can." Henry pulled a button-down shirt and a nice pair of jeans out of his bag and headed for the bathroom. He ignored Sam for the rest of the time he was getting ready and left with a small huff. Just because Sam didn't like making friends, that didn't mean he couldn't have his own fun.

Fucking teen agnst. He pushed the annoyance out of his mind and headed for Kinkos. He had some fake IDs to make for his real friends.

Hoyt, Geri, and Emily were waiting in the parking lot of the Side Step as promised. Henry smiled and presented them with his (mostly decent) stab at making IDs for them. "Here we are; Winchester approved and guaranteed to get us in."

Hoyt let out a low whistle when he saw the final product. "Wow...good thing your dad's weird!" Geri smacked his arm and Henry chuckled.

"Come on guys, let's go get smashed!"

The four friends filed into the bar and passed the ID check with flying colors. Henry offered to buy the first round and picked a beer that he knew was good. This felt...nice. Fun. Nomal. He was just an average dumb kid doing something he shouldn't with his friends right beside him. What more could he ask for?

He just wished it would last. He knew it wouldn't, but he could dream, right?

Two Months Later….

Henry and Sam were working on their homework at the motel room on one of his rare days off from babysitting when the phone rang. Dean and Dad had been out all day canvassing and searching for where the pack made home. Looks like they finally found it.

“Your brother and I are gonna keep an eye on things here,” Dad said. “You and Sammy are gonna have to find your own way out here. Just look for the car on the side of the road. Once you get here, we’ll work out a game plan. Be careful.”

The twins packed their weapons into their backpacks and headed for the location Dad had given them. “I could call one of my friends ot give us a lift, save us some time,” Henry suggested.

Sam rolled his eyes. “And what would we tell them we’re doing out there?”

Henry shrugged. “Family bonding time?”

Sam shook his head and sighed. “It’s not gonna be that easy and you know it. We’ll just go on foot. It’ll take longer but nobody’ll ask us any questions. Besides, I’m pretty sure we can take a shortcut through the public parks and once we get out of the city it’ll be smooth sailing.”

Well, he couldn’t argue with that. Walking it is.

By the time they made it to Dad and Dean, the sun had set and their legs were very tired. But they didn’t have time to rest; there were lives at stake.

"Okay, Dean and I will go in through the front and take care of the wolves. Sam, you and Henry go around the back and get the kids. Get them out and to the police so they can get home. Then I want you to start packing up the room. Dean and I will be there as soon as we can. Is that clear?"

"Yessir."

"Alright. Let's roll out."

Henry and Sam ran around the back of the building while Dean and Dad charged the front. Henry picked the lock while Sam stood guard and it wasn't long before they were in. "This way," Sam whispered. They crept along until they came to a door that was producing soft whimpers and cries. Henry kicked the door in and, sure enough, the kids were there. There weren't many, less than ten, but that was more kids than needed to be here.

Henry’s heart dropped right to his stomach when he saw Liam’s face in the mass of scared kids. What was he even doing here? Abby and Bonham were being so careful….

He shook his head and started herding the kids out. He would worry about how Liam got there later. Right now, he needed to get Liam out. "Come on, guys, we're getting you out of here. Your parents are real worried…." With a lot of careful soothing and prodding, Sam and Henry managed to get all the kids out (quietly) and away from the building.

“I’ll take Liam back to his place, you get the rest of them to the police,” Henry said when they reached the road, picking a scared Liam up in his arms.

Sam nodded with an unreadable look on his face and started walking away, kids clinging on every limb. Liam was gripping him just as tight as he started the walk to the Walker ranch. “It’s okay,” he soothed “I’m gonna get you home and everything’s gonna be alright. Nobody else is getting hurt, I promise.”

It was a long walk but they made it in one piece. He adjusted Liam so he was resting on his hip and rang the doorbell with his spare arm. He hoped the Walkers were at home. It was late enough for them to be getting ready for bed but with Liam missing, they were just as likely to be out leading a search party.

The door yanked open to reveal a very frazzled Abilene Walker “I’m sorry but we- Oh, thank the Lord!” Henry passed Liam off to Abilene and followed her in the house. “Thank you for bringing him home. Bonham and I were worried sick…. How did you find him?” she asked, setting Liam on the couch and checking him over.

Henry shrugged. “It’s...kind of a long story.”

“Start talking then.” Bonham loomed behind him, eyes stern and flicking towards the shotgun on the wall.

Henry bit his lip. What should he tell them? The truth? Hey, Liam was taken by some werewolves that were targeting kids. Yes, werewolves are real, as are many other monsters. My family hunts them and the whole reason we’re even in town was hunting down this one pack. By the way, your son is probably traumatized for life. Yeah, that would go over well. Assuming they even believed him, they would have a lot of questions that he wasn’t ready to answer. Of course, there was the much more likely possibility that they didn’t believe him at all and Bonham escorted him out of their lives by the barrel of his shotgun.

No. Better to lie. “I was taking a walk to get away from some crap at home and I heard some screaming. I followed it and I saw a bunch of kids being herded into this old building by some creepy guys. I called the police and I was gonna let them handle it but then I saw Liam and...I dunno, instinct kicked in I guess. I got him out of there just before the cops arrived and brought him back here.”

He couldn’t tell if Bonham believed him or not but he wasn’t reaching for his gun so that was a good thing.

“Well, we’re glad you did. I honestly don’t know how this happened. He was supposed to walk home from school with his friends but he never showed and everyone else made it home just fine….” By now, Abby had Liam settled in her lap.

"It was no trouble," Henry insisted. "If things are okay here, I should get going. Dad just got a call for a new job and we're leaving in the morning. I would've said something sooner but he didn't tell us until tonight…."

"No!” Liam jumped up and  wrapped himself around Henry’s leg. “You can’t go! I don’t want you to!”

He sighed and knelt down to talk to him. “I don’t wanna go either, Liam. But I have to. Dad’s probably packing up the car right now….”

“You can stay with us. He can stay with us, right?” Liam looked up at Abby with his best pout.

“I can’t. I really, really can’t buddy.” He wanted to though. He wanted to so badly. But he couldn’t. “But it won’t be so bad, okay? I’m not just gonna disappear. I’ll call you and stuff.” An idea popped in  his head. “Hey, what if I sent you stuff? Like letters or postcards from all the places my family goes? You can keep track of me on your map.”

“It’s not the same….” Liam muttered.

“I know, I know. But it’s better than nothing and that’s something, right?” Goddammit, now he was tearing up. “Hey, I’ll miss you too. You’re a cool kid.”

LIam sniffed and wrapped his arms around Henry’s neck in a tight hug. “Are you ever gonna come back?”

“I’ll try,” he murmured.

Liam nodded and slowly let go. “Thanks. You’re the best babysitter ever.”

Henry smiled and ruffled his hair. “Thanks, stinker.” He stood up and made to leave, only to be stopped by Abby and pulled into another hug. 

“Thank you,” she whispered, squeezing him tight. “You saved my boy. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to call me, okay?”

He nodded and gently hugged back. “I will, ma’am. Thank you.”

Bonhams showed him to the door while Abby went back to get Liam to bed. With a “Take care of yourself”, he was on the road again. Knowing Dad, he was probably getting the room packed up and ready to go. But Henry wasn’t ready to leave just yet. It was a risky move but he didn’t want to leave his friends without a goodbye. He didn’t have time to run to everyone’s house but he could stop at Emily’s; she’d tell the rest of them.

Assuming she didn’t hate him for this.

“Emily…” he whispered, softly tapping on her window. “Emily!”

The window opened so fast he almost let go of it. “Henry? What are you doing here?”

He smiled and took a moment to drink her in one last time. She was wearing an oversized t-shirt for bed and her hair was put up in a messy bun. The lamp by her bed was still on and it formed a soft halo of light around her head. Like an angel.

His angel.

“Henry? You okay?” Emily snapped her fingers in front of his face.

Right. He came here for a reason. “Emily, I can’t stay long, but I have to tell you this.” Here goes…. “I’m leaving town in an hour. And I don’t know if I’m coming back.”

Emily frowned. “What? Why? What happened?”

“I-I can’t really explain. At least not right now. But that’s just how it is with me; my family never really stays anywhere long. I just didn’t want to leave without telling you….”

Emily placed one of her hands over his. “I- Where are you going? Will I see you again?”

“I don’t know where we’re going and I doubt I’ll be able to come back. We never hit the same place twice….”

She shook her head and squeezed his hand. “Why don’t you just stay here? You have people that care about you here. I care about you. And Liam and Hoyt and Geri… You could be happy here.”

He shrugged. “They’re my family. I-” She grabbed his collar and kissed him, effectively shutting him up. She was kissing him. She was kissing him. And he had to leave her in just a few minutes. How fucked was that?

“Promise me you’ll come back?” she murmured, pulling away slightly.

“I can’t,” he whispered.

“Promise me you’ll try?”

He nodded. “Promise me you won’t wait up?”

She nodded. “Be careful. I love you.”

I love you too.

“I have to go now. Dad’ll be looking for me.” He kissed her cheek before dropping from the window and sprinting to the woods behind her house. As he ran, the weight of regret settled in his stomach. He knew he couldn't stay. Dad would never allow that.

Emily could do better than him anyway.

Somehow, he got back to the motel room before anyone noticed he’d been gone for too long. Well, maybe Sam noticed but he wasn’t going to say anything, especially not in front of Dad or Dean. Henry slipped in and started packing his duffle for the road. Within an hour, they were loaded into the car and speeding off into the darkness. Henry sighed as he rested against the leather seat; they weren’t even out of the city limits yet and already missed his friends.

But there was nothing he could do about it now. They were leaving and he’d likely never set foot in Austin again. And he just had to be okay with that. Tears pricked at his eyes as the city passed his window and he hid them with the sleeve of his hoodie.

It’s fine. It’s just the life. You’ll be fine.

Unknown Location- 2001

“If you walk out that door, don’t come back!”

“Don’t worry! I won’t!”

Sam slammed the door behind him and Dad stormed off to his room in the house they were squatting in. Henry watched Dean flounder between his options before running out after Sam. A few moments later, he heard them shouting at each other, likely Dean’s way of trying to convince Sam to come back. Henry took the other option and walked back to check on Dad. His door was closed and he ignored Henry’s knocks so he decided to leave it be for now.

Henry was just walking back to the front room when Dean stormed back in and straight for the cooler. “Sonofabitch,” he muttered under his breath. “Eighteen fucking years lookin’ after that kid and this is the thanks I get? Fuck him. He can go off to Stanford and find a fuckin’ wife and have his two and a half fuckin’ kids with a fuckin’ white picket fence. Fine. We don’t need him, right Henry?” He laughed bitterly and glugged half a bottle of beer. “Good thing you were shit in school; you can’t go runnin’ off with a fancy scholarship. You’re stuck with the rest of us losers!”

Henry bit his tongue and stood to the side while Dean waltzed out again. “I’m takin’ the car. Tell Dad I’m gettin’ some air.”

Translation: “I feel like shit so I’m gonna get drunk and find a pair of legs to bury myself in. Don’t wait up.”

So. Sam was gone. Dad was hiding. Dean was being a dick. And Henry was just standing there. Alone.

Without really thinking about the fact that it was 2 in the morning, he went for his duffle bag and rooted around for the bag of spare change he kept for payphones and set out to find one. It took him a while (probably, he wasn't keeping track of time) but he made it there and automatically put in the exact payment and dialed the number; after two years of almost weekly calls, it was basically muscle memory.

It wasn’t until the phone started calling that he remembered the time and that this was probably pointless. Nobody would be answering right now. He was just an idiot in a phone booth.

“‘Lo? Who is this?” came Abeline’s tired answer.

Oh. Nevermind. “Uh...hi. It’s Henry, Winchester? I know what time it is but-”

“Oh, Henry! Thank goodness you’re alright. We didn’t get a call from you this week or last and I was worried. Liam’s alright since he got your postcard but it’s just been so long. How are you? Is everything okay? Are you hurt? Do you need help?”

Hearing Abby's voice again relaxed him. Henry may not have a Mom but she was definitely the closest thing to it. "I- I'm alright. Just...I needed to hear a friendly voice."

"That's what I'm here for,” she said softly.” Do you wanna talk about it?"

Henry sighed. “I- No, not really. There’s just...stuff going on. Family stuff.”

“I see.” The line went quiet for a few moments. “Do you need somewhere to be?”

The offer was clear. It would be so easy to take it too. Just walk away from this, go back to the only place he’d ever really felt welcome. Sam did it; why couldn’t he do it too? It’s not like it’d be hard. He just had to grab his duffle bag and go.

But…. Dad. And Dean. What if they needed him? And what if Sam came back? This was his family. They needed him.

Didn’t they?

“I…. I don’t….”

“Henry, honey, I’m not telling you how to live your life, but I wanna say this. It’s important to be there for the people we love, but sometimes we need to take care of ourselves too. I’m not telling you to abandon them forever but...maybe just take a little break?”

Well. When she put it like that….

“Are you sure you want me there?”

“Of course I am. Just drop by whenever you feel like it; we have a spare bed and a seat at the table for you here as long as you need it.”

“I- Okay. I can be there in a few days.”

“We’ll be ready for you. Be safe.”

They said their goodbyes and Henry hung up the phone. He walked back to the house and snuck into the room he and Sam had been sharing. He quietly packed away his stuff and headed for the front door. It was a long way from where they were to Austin but he could probably jack a car once he got into town. Or maybe he’d spring for a bus ticket. He’d figure that out later. Right now, he just needed to get out before-

“You runnin’ away too?” Dad stumbled out of his room. “What? Did you apply to school behind my back too? Get yourself a nice scholarship so you can walk out on your family like a coward?” He was drunk and mad. Not a good thing.

Henry swallowed hard and shook his head. “Just goin’ out for a bit. Didn’t want to bother you, that’s all.”

Dad smirked and shook his head. “You’re a shit liar, Henry. You’re runnin’ off, ain’t ya?”

Henry glanced at the floor, hand still resting over the doorknob. “I...I just need to not be here for a bit. Not forever, just a little bit. I-I’ll be back….” He wasn’t sure he believed himself.

“Ha!” Dad stepped closer, causing Henry to press his back against the door. “You think you can just walk out on this family and come crawling back when you feel like it? When it's convenient for you? Bullshit! You’re either in or you’re out. So which is it?!”

Henry stared after him for a while. Could’ve been a few minutes. Could’ve been an hour. He wasn’t keeping track. Then he slowly got to his feet, grabbed his back, and walked out the door. 

He had somewhere he needed to be.

Henry knocked on the door of the Walker home. It was the middle of the day. Abby would likely be inside doing food prep, Bonham was probably out on the ranch and Liam would be at school. He’d just gotten into Austin earlier that morning and trekked there on foot, having abandoned the car he jacked just outside of the city. He wondered if the weird mixture of calm and anticipation that he felt in his soul was normal.

Abby answered the door and smiled brightly. “Oh, you’re here! I got a little worried when I didn’t hear from you again. I’m glad you made it. How-” She paused and her eyes focused on his jaw, likely because of the bruise that was still there. “I- Is that-” Her eyes narrowed. “Did your father-”

“He’s not like that,” he said abruptly, cutting off that dangerous line of conversation. “It was a one-off thing. I’m fine.”

She didn’t look like she believed him but she stepped aside and ushered him in all the same. “I’ve got the guest room all set up for you if you wanna unpack your things. Liam’s coming straight home after school and he’ll be so excited to see you. I also called Emily and let her know you were on your way into town; I thought it might be nice for you to see a friendly face. I’m almost done making lunch if you’re hungry.”

Ever the hostess, he thought to himself with a smile. “Thank you. If it’s okay, I think I could use a shower….”

“Of course, whatever you need. I’ll have a sandwich waiting for you when you’re ready.”

Good. He was going to need time to think about how to explain things. And he really did need a shower. Three days stuck in a car by himself following a week in a house without running water didn’t exactly make a guy smell like roses.

He took a very reasonably timed shower and changed into something a little more comfortable before he reentered the main part of the house. When he got there, he was greeted with a 5’4” missile of hugs and he stumbled back to keep from falling over. “Emily? I thought you were coming over later….”

Emily shook her head and squeezed him. “I don’t have any classes today so I came over as soon as I could. I...I missed you….”

Henry hugged her back. “I missed you too,” he admitted softly, kissing the top of her head. 

Emily pulled back and looked up at him with a small smile. “Abby went out to look for Bonham; I think she just wanted to give us some time alone….”

Henry blushed softly. “That’s- I-” He ducked his head. “...How’ve things been around here lately?”

Emily smiled and led him over to the table, where Abby had left lunch for him. While they ate, she caught him up on all of Hoyt’s shenanigans and what she and Geri had been up to. When she finished, he told her some of what he’d been doing, up to and including Sam leaving and him deciding to do the same. “Is that why he-” Emily’s hand ghosted over his bruise.

Henry shook his head. “He’s not like that,” he said softly. “He was drunk and upset; he even seemed sorry after. One-time thing, no big deal.”

Emily nodded and bit her lip. “So...what now? Are you just here for a bit or are you staying? Because I’ve literally been imagining you coming back since you left and I need to know how serious this is or I might lose my mind. I’ve just- God I’ve missed you so much.”

Henry nodded and pulled her into another quick hug. "I really missed you too. And...I think I'm staying," he murmured. He didn't really have anyone else to go to. Sure, he knew a few people that might take him for a night or two, but those people knew his family too and that kind of killed the point of leaving them behind.

"Good." Emily kissed him softly. "I'm never letting you go again."

Henry smiled and kissed back. "Guess you'll have to break the bad news to your boyfriend, huh?"

She shook her head. "I don't have one. I haven't really dated since you left…."

What? "Emily, I told you not to wait for me. You could have any guy you wanted."

She shrugged. "I want you."

"Me? I'm a high school drop out with $100 to my name that I got hustling pool with a fake ID. And you're...you're you."

She smiled and kissed him. "And you're you. And I think Henry Winchester is pretty amazing."

Henry shook his head but didn’t say anything. She was entitled to her opinion and he wasn’t going to turn down a makeout session.

By the time Liam got home and Bonham and Abby came in for dinner, it felt like no time had passed at all.

Emily was invited to stay for dinner, which Henry was grateful for. He had some things to explain and it would be better if everyone heard it all at once.

"Henry, how long do you think you'll be staying?" Bonham asked.

Henry bit his lip. "I...If it's okay with you, I might be moving in. Dad made it pretty clear I wasn't welcome back…."

"It's okay," Liam said. "It's okay, right?"

Abby chuckled. "Of course. We have the room and we could certainly use the extra hands. And I think it'd be good for Liam. He's missed you a lot, even with all your letters. And I think that map you left him is more thumbtacks and strings than map."

"Mom…." Liam blushed and ducked his head.

"What? It is…."

"Don't embarrass the boy, Abby," Bonham said. "But you're welcome to stay. We owe you for saving Liam from those creeps a few years ago. Shame the cops never caught them. Even with ten eyewitnesses and a location, they came up with squat."

Never let it be said that the Winchester's weren't good at covering their tracks. "Actually...I wanted to talk about that. I...I didn't exactly tell you the whole story that night…." Henry fidgeted in his seat as an uneasy silence settled over the room.

Cases with people going missing or turning up dead and no one can explain it. It's sort of the family business. It's just...we don't talk about it much with other people. Because we don't catch normal criminals. We...we hunt monsters. Like monster monsters. Werewolves and ghosts and things like that." He explained how his dad had gotten a call from another hunter about the case and how they tracked down the pack and saved everyone. He finished by explaining that they usually cleaned up all the evidence after a hunt was complete. It saved them from being implicated in anything, though it did make it hard for the police. 

If he thought the room was silent before, it was practically a void now. Henry pushed his food around his plate and waited for Abby or Bonham to tell him to get his crazy ass out of their house and away from their son.

"He's right," Liam said quietly.

"William," Bonham warned.

"No, it's true," Liam insisted. "I- I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't think you'd believe me but...those guys that took me? They weren't human." Liam told them how he hadn't been picked up in a van, but that his captors just grabbed him and ran inhumanly fast. He also described their strange yellow eyes and sharp teeth. "It wasn't natural," he murmured.

"I-" Abby seemed at a loss for words. "Why- Why didn't you-"

"It's not something that's easy to explain,'' Henry said. "Most people don't believe, even when the evidence is right in front of them. That's why I didn't tell you that night. The case was done and your son was safe and that was all that mattered."

Emily gently squeezed Henry's hand under the table. "I believe you," she said softly. "Is that why you had to leave so suddenly?"

He nodded. "We don't stick around after hunts. I can't tell you how many times I've had to pack up in the middle of the night to go somewhere new…."

"Sounds lonely."

He shrugged. "It's the life."

"Well, it's not anymore," Abby said with great conviction. "You're a part of our family now, Henry."

He smiled softly. "Thank you," he said softly. 

But there was something else he wanted to talk about. "I...I know this is weird but I don't think I can be Henry anymore. I know what my dad said but I'm not sure he'll really just let me go. He's big on family and...I don't really wanna go back. Dean'll probably come after me if Dad doesn't. I don't think either of them know how attached I got here but just in case...I think I should change my name."

"That’s a good idea," Emily said. "Since hunting people down is kind of their thing."

"Well, the last name is easy; you can be a Walker instead of a Winchester," Liam suggested.
