Aperçu of the Week:
"Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On"
(Jerry Lee Lewis & Big Maybelle)
Bad News of the Week:
When it comes to Nobel Prizes, I always have a hard time grasping the actual scope of the honorees' work. I simply don't know enough about physics, chemistry, medicine or economics. And literature is simply a matter of personal taste. The situation is different with the Nobel Peace Prize, where I allow myself to have an opinion. When it comes to politicians, also a well-founded one. Therefore, it has always been clear to me that the Nobel Peace Prizes awarded to Henry Kissinger, the trio of Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzach Rabin, or even Barack Obama are not based on actual action worthy of an award, but rather on calculated symbolic politics.
This was also the case with Ethiopian politician Abiy Ahmed Ali, prime minister of his country. The official 2019 citation said he deserved the award "for his efforts to promote peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his determined initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea." As a father of school children, I know what "making an effort" really means: keeping a low profile, doing what is necessary, and falling well short of one's capabilities. So it was in this case.
At the end of 2020, however, the political conflict between the central government and the regional government of the northern region of Tigray, which borders Eritrea, escalated. Since then, a bloody civil war has been raging (largely unnoticed by the world public) in which massacres by the Ethiopian armed forces have also been documented - under Ahmed's command. But that is not all: since then, the Ethiopian ruler has systematically destroyed infrastructure and, despite the famine, has prevented civilian aid organizations from delivering aid. Amnesty International has published a detailed report that lists sexual violence against more than 20,000 victims, oppression of the Tigrayan minority, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
And what is Ahmed doing? He continues to escalate. In the last two months alone, there have reportedly been more than 100,000 deaths; local observers fear a genocide of the Tigray population. And when secret talks were held under U.S. auspices, reported last week, he rebuffed all peace efforts and deliberately chose to continue the war. This was because Tigray was "the Satan." And even his religious advisor Deacon Daniel Kribet of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church calls for its "eradication." That is exactly what will happen. And everyone continues to look the other way. Too bad there is no natural gas in this region.
Good News of the Week:
It was talked about for a long time, but never made it to an actual decision: a medium-term ban on combustion engines in cars in Europe. Germany, the fetish country, in particular, kept standing on the brakes. The country of Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche could not even bring itself to introduce speed limits - the last country in Europe to do so. Except for the Isle of Man, where there is not a single freeway. Although there is an undisputed link between speed and traffic accidents, pollution and noise. And as a last resort, people dream of e-fuels, just so they don't have to do without vroom-vroom.
That's over now, because the EU decided this week that from 2035 only zero-emission cars (passenger cars, vans and light trucks) may be sold. In other words, truly climate-neutral vehicles. Period. No more nonsensical hybrid models, no more fleet calculations and other excuses. The only exceptions are vehicles that are already registered, but these will make themselves disappear over the years, partly because the purchase is becoming increasingly unprofitable and spare parts are becoming increasingly rare. 2035 is still a long period of time, but the transformation of an entire key industry with protracted development cycles is no mean feat either. The decisive factor is the fundamental decision on the direction to take.
There is still a long way to go before this can be achieved in other areas, too. There are currently only 70,000 charging stations in Germany, for example. The requirement for complete electrification of car traffic is around one million. The situation is hardly any better in the other EU countries. Not to mention the correspondingly powerful grid and the generation of sufficient green electricity. There it fits into the picture that likewise in this week in Bavaria the rules for the setting up of wind turbines were relaxed. And that in the current development of LNG use, its later usability for hydrogen is always taken into account. Now it seems to start really and seriously with the necessary change of times in the individual traffic.
Personal happy moment of the week:
This week my wife and I started a project with friends. It's about getting off our asses, tackling things. Things that you know make sense. And are good for you. And yet you still have a hard time doing them. Now we want to see if the group dynamic helps us. And at least the first few days feel kind of good. Pressure, but in a strangely positive sense. At first I doubted, now I'm about to become a believer. Even if that means I still have to go jogging tomorrow to have done cardio at least once this week.
I couldn't care less...
...about the wrangling at the highest political level over whether the Chinese shipping company should be allowed to buy into the container port of Hamburg. It's about 24.9 percent! Of the smallest container terminal in Hamburg! And the federal cabinet is seriously debating this! I think this is an exaggerated reaction in the context of "We will never again make ourselves as dependent as we are on Russia for gas - and certainly not for infrastructure". Or to put it another way: this is not about the economic involvement of a foreign company, as it happens every day. But it is about the principle.
As I write this...
...I hear Jerry Lee Lewis, who died yesterday. For me more the King of Rock'n'Roll than Elvis Presley. Especially live, for example with his performance at the Star Club in Hamburg (yes, the one you know from the Beatles), which many consider one of the best live recordings ever. The feuilleton goes into analyses. He was a preacher and a sinner, a perpetrator and a therapist. A grand master of excess and ambivalence. The original punk. "The Killer." The "last man standing." No matter what you can and must accuse him of as a person, as a musician he was remarkable in every way.
Post Scriptum:
I'm a big fan of the arts. And have sympathy for activists who work for the environment, social justice or human rights. Even if they are pushing the envelope of what can still be called "civil disobedience" - like chaining themselves to the gate of a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant to prevent the delivery of radioactive material. But I don't understand this recent trend of throwing tomato sauce or mashed potatoes at works of art and then glueing one hand to the wall in front of them. What can Claude Monet do for the fact that French politics still backs nuclear energy? And Vincent van Gogh for the fact that the Brazilian rainforest is still being cut down?
Making headlines to draw attention to a grievance is fine. But I would like to see a reference to the actual concern. As it is, for example, with the sit-in on a street to protest against car traffic in the city. But throwing a pie at the figure of King Charles III in Madame Tussaud's wax museum while wearing a T-shirt with "Stop oil now!" and not "Royalism is outdated!" doesn't make sense to me. This is what a marketing expert tells you.

You likely drive a Commodore Corolla or LandCruiser according to these maps
Maps of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane show the most common cars registered to each ZIP code – but it’s bad news for electric car advocates. 0 Opinion 5 photos A new study revealed They are the most popular cars registered in major Australian capitals. Financial advisory and audit group KPMG He detailed the types of cars Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane residents prefer based on zip code – with one car doing the chopping despite not being sold locally for about two years. The Holden Commodore – which has not been offered here since Holden closed its doors in late 2020 – remains one of the popular cars registered in Australia’s cities, along with Toyota HiLux, Toyota Corolla, Toyota LandCruiser and Mazda 3. Opinion 5 photos The study shows that the Corolla dominates the greater Sydney area, with the Commodore and Landcruiser more popular along the outer edges, while the Mazda3 is the car of choice in some of Sydney’s northern suburbs and the outer east. The Corolla is also the preferred mode of transportation for those who live near Brisbane’s central business district, while those who live far and away prefer LandCruiser, with some areas in the West and Northwest tending to contest the popularity of the Commodore. It’s a different story in Melbourne, as the Commodore is the most-recorded car in the outer suburbs, while the inner suburbs favor the Corolla. Opinion 5 photos There’s a little more variety in Victoria, with some pockets choosing the Camry, and areas closer to the center of Melbourne leaning toward the Volkswagen Golf and Mazda 3. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, of the more than 20 million registered vehicles, the average age of the registered fleet in the country is about 10.6 years. Maps from KPMG correlate roughly with sales data from a decade ago. Opinion 5 photos Back in time in 2011, Mazda 3, Holden Commodore, Toyota Corolla, Holden Cruze and Hyundai i30 won the top five new car sales respectively. It wasn’t until 2012 when HiLux climbed to second place behind the Mazda 3, while Corolla, Commodore and Cruze all got rid of the remaining spots, only outperforming the i30. These latter findings clearly show a preference for smaller cars in the inner city areas, while those in the outer suburbs choose larger vehicles with large engines – suggesting a potential challenge for those proposing the switch to zero-emissions cars. Opinion 5 photos Maps created for the report Accelerate the domestic electric vehicle absorption where it is important, It highlights the point that Australian motorists outside of city centers tend to gravitate towards larger cars with large engines. Up to this point, most electric cars for sale were mostly smaller models, such as the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3. Despite being nearly a decade old, larger battery-powered cars like the Tesla Model S still command a premium in the used car market. Assuming the average age of registered cars does not change significantly, it will likely be the mid-2030s before the majority of Australian motorists switch to zero-emissions cars – a decade after SUVs and electric trucks are sold here. Latepost has learned from several independent sources that Didi has started the project, led by Yang Jun, vice president of Didi and general manager of Xiaoju. He is also the chief product officer of D1, a customised ride-hailing service launched jointly by Didi and BYD, and the team has already started poaching people from car factories. However, Latepost has not yet learned the specific form and path of Didi's car construction.
Zhu Jiang, former vice president of user development at Nio, is likely to join Didi, a person familiar with the matter said.Zhu Jiang has many years of experience in automobile industry, and has worked in BMW Brilliance, Lexus, NIO, Ford China and other companies.
In addition to the new developments, Latepost has learned from inside Didi that its self-driving subsidiary plans to try new paths beyond its own research and start a new self-driving truck business.
Didi declined to comment.
Didi has several car-building projects in the works
In November 2019, Didi and BYD set up a joint venture, Beautiful Chuxing (Hangzhou) Automotive Technology Co., with BYD holding 65% and Didi 35%, and BYD as the controlling shareholder. The two subsequently launched a customized ride-hailing service, D1, in November 2020. At that time, Didi was also directly involved in the cooperation with Xiaoju.Didi's car service business started in 2016 and became Xiaoju's car service independently in 2019. At present, it includes Xiaoju youche (car rental platform), car maintenance, second-hand car, charging and refueling.Didi wants to focus on renting from the front end to the back end, with services such as maintenance, insurance and energy.
In June 2020, Didi Autopilot, a subsidiary of Didi, announced a partnership with BAIC, in which the two sides will jointly develop high-level self-driving customized models for RoboTaxi (self-driving taxi) operations.
And this time Didi started to build a car, is likely to be along the D1, the further exploration of customized online car hailing.
Analysts in the industry say Didi's new car plan will be different from the car-company-dominated approach it took when it launched the D1.This time Didi will be more capital-intensive and more engaged. This echoes Didi's message when it launched D1, which stressed that it was the "first" custom ride-hailing service.
According to the plan previously mentioned by Cheng Wei, founder and CEO of Didi at the D1 launch, Didi's customized ride-hailing service will continue to iterate, and by 2025, the customized version of D3 will be popular on Didi's platform, with more than 1 million units. By 2030, the D series aims to eliminate the cockpit and achieve full driverless driving.
On the other hand, although Didi has made more efforts to build cars, according to industry analysts, it is not possible for Didi to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary to build cars like Xiaomi, because its capital may not be able to keep up with it, and its model may be lighter than Xiaomi's.
One investor believes that it is a more economical choice for Didi not to build cars by itself. At present, the production capacity of car companies is too large, and Didi, as a big customer, can completely eat a part of the upstream profits. But building your own can tell a better capital story and keep drivers further on the platform.
Didi has partnered with third-party car rental companies in many places, allowing drivers without cars to hire cars to join Didi's platform to pick up customers. But aggregated car-hailing platforms such as AutoNavi, Meituan and Hello are also courting local car rental companies to compete with Didi.By providing its own operating vehicles, Didi could reduce its reliance on third-party rental companies and reduce the cost of securing drivers.
Whether it was D1 last year or the new plan now, there is a clear logic behind Didi's entry into the custom ride-hailing service.Currently, the cost of the online car hailing market based on fuel models is too high, which directly leads to the limited scale of the online car hailing market and low profit.
Customizing ride-hailing is one way for Didi to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. In 2018, Didi and Ideal had previously planned to cooperate in this area and set up a related subsidiary, JudianChuxing, in which Didi held a 51% stake and Ideal 49%.
However, Latepost previously reported that Didi's cooperation with Ideal has been terminated and that Judian plans to become an independent OEM-travel company with new strategic shareholders.
Since then, Didi has established joint ventures with BAIC, BYD and Volkswagen. But Didi's tie-up with Volkswagen and BAIC has yet to materially develop.
Li Xiang, founder of Ideal Auto, said at the time that the future evolution of the mobility market will be in line with the logistics industry standard, which means the lower the cost the better and the more efficient the better. The partnership between Ideal and Didi is aimed at further reducing costs on the premise of safety.According to Li Xiang's calculation, the cost of the new car may be 10~15% more expensive than that of the ordinary fuel-powered car, but the battery life will double, and the amortized cost per kilometer will drop 0.5~0.6 yuan, or nearly 20%, compared with that of the fuel-powered car.
What's more, customized online car hailing can also improve user experience and produce cars that are more suitable for driverless driving, making preparations for the landing of driverless driving in the future.
As a result, custom ride-hailing could also become a connection point between Didi's ride-hailing platform service and its Robotaxi business, which its self-driving subsidiary is building up.
Didi's self-driving business may also be changing
In addition, a person close to drops autopilot told the late LatePost drops autopilot company is currently in the research of automatic driving route, is also considering to try the second route, the route may be combined with vehicle road new "Robotaxi ping's", namely the side access Robotaxi enterprises with operational vehicles, access to the passengers.
But given that Didi itself is doing Robotaxi, if it takes this route, the short-term drag will be persuading other Robotaxi companies to work with Didi.Currently, Chinese companies such as Baidu, Xiaoma Zhixing and Wenyuan Zhixing all have their own taxi-hailing apps, while AutoX can use AutoNavi to take taxis. The biggest challenge for the autonomous driving industry is technology and product maturity rather than competing for passengers.
Meanwhile, Didi Autopilot has also started experimenting with a self-driving truck project, which is being led by Didi Autopilot CTO Wei Junqing, confirmed by Late Latepost.
On Friday (April 2), two days after the official announcement, the Huaxia Alumni Association, attended by many entrepreneurs and investors, was held at the Xiaomi campus. A photo of Lei Jun with Wang Chuanfu, Li Bin, Li Xiang and He Xiaopeng was widely circulated.
Cheng Wei, the CEO of Didi, was also at the table with Li Xiang and Li Bin, but in the group photo, Li Xiang were on stage and Cheng Wei and Yang Jun were in the audience.
Mr Cheng has previously said Didi does not build cars and is not seeking to become the biggest car operator in the future.Didi's core competence is to serve its users and car owners well, and to keep investing and making breakthroughs in big data and technology.
Mr Cheng may have to eat his words. He and Didi will also be in the car building business. But from the business logic, it is good news.
Didi has more on its plate than just building cars.Didi plans to go public this year. In order to achieve better market valuation, Didi has carried out more diversified business expansion, including "Orange Heart Preferred", which is now a key business community group purchase.Community group-buying is also a capital-heavy track, and brings together the giants with the strongest financial strength at present -- Meituan, Pinduoduo, Ali and Jingdong all regard it as an important direction.
Bloomberg had previously reported that Didi had plans to inject about $3 billion into its preferred unit.Didi is also working with financial advisers to raise about $1bn from outside investors.
More deeply involved in and led the launch of customized online car hailing, into the self-driving truck, into the community group buying market, Didi will be listed this year, the new moves continue.Didi, which has always been considered by the market to be relatively cautious in making decisions, showed a sharper ambition on the eve of its listing.

VOLKSWAGEN – e-DELIVERY Electric Truck
VW e-Delivery was developed by Volkswagen Caminhões e Omnibus, the Brazilian division of Volkswagen in 2017. Ambev, a popular Brazilian brewery has placed an order for 1600 electric trucks in an attempt to make their fleet all-electric. It is scheduled to go to mass production in 2020.
Features to look out for in the Volkswagen e-DELIVERY:
The truck’s range is more than 125 miles.
The battery bank is NMC or lithium-ion-nickel-manganese-cobalt cells.  This ensures high performance.
The battery has a quick-charging mode. 30% charging can be done in 15 minutes. The battery can be completely charged in 3 hours.
The power output of the truck is up to 260 kWh with a torque limit of 2,150 Nm.
The innovative design of the truck makes it extremely futuristic. The three modules of the vehicle (front module with the cabin and other features, middle module with the batteries, and rear module with the powertrain) are independent of each other. This makes it possible for all the designs and components to be combined with other electric vehicles too.
The three regenerative stages of the brake ensures that 30% power will be recuperated when hitting brakes. This power can be used to charge the batteries.
The pneumatic suspension and smart payload reading system helps in synchronizing the load and the electricity consumption while in the eco-drive mode.
Special Mention: OTTO TRUCKS
The Otto trucks company was founded in January, 2016. Uber acquired Otto in August, 2016 for a sum of approximately $680 million. Otto achieved its first freight service in October, 2016. This was also the longest non-stop journey by an autonomous truck in with cargo containing 51,744 cans of Budweiser. The journey was of 132 miles, starting from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins in Colorado. There was no human assistance, lead vehicle, or tele-operation.
It was supposed to be technology that could be used by truck drivers while taking rest during long hauls. Trucks were not built by Otto, rather autonomous hardware kits were installed in them. A Few trucks used by Otto to make them Otto autonomous trucks are the Volvo 780 and Volvo VNL.
Trucks have come a long way since they were first produced. Electric and automatic trucks bear testimony to human intelligence and technological advancements. The Trucking industry virtually touches the life of every American. It is only natural that engineers and innovators will try to transform the industry as ‘humanely’ and ‘technically’ possible. To learn more on on innovation, check out this article on a list of 6 technologies that will impact the future of the trucking industry.
The above mentioned trucks prove that these electric trucks are surely set to change the future of trucking and the way trucking has been so far conceived.

Excerpt from this story from the Wall Street Journal:
Pressure is building on General Motors Co., GM 0.54% Volkswagen AG VOW 1.62% and other major auto makers to deliver on their electric-vehicle plans, as investor enthusiasm for the technology has grown in recent months.
Despite some coronavirus-related setbacks, car companies in the coming months are expected to unleash a wave of new plug-in models in an effort to catch up with Tesla Inc. TSLA -4.54% and meet governments’ tightening restrictions on how much vehicles can pollute.
While there have been some delays and cancellations tied to the health crisis, executives say that longer-term trends make continued investment in this technology a necessity and that the influx will help reduce their more-than-a-century-long reliance on selling gasoline-powered vehicles.
Meanwhile, investors are increasingly placing bets on the growth potential of electrification, including on startups that have yet to sell their first vehicle. Last month, the market value of Nikola Corp., a little-known electric-truck startup that recently went public, briefly surged past that of Ford Motor Co. and other car companies.
Tesla shares have more than tripled in 2020 and are now trading north of $1,500 a share, making it the most valuable auto maker in the world, ahead of GM, VW and Toyota Motor Corp.
“We believe in an all-electric future, and we’re moving aggressively to have vehicles that people want,” GM Chief Executive Mary Barra said on a call with reporters last month.
GM said Thursday that it is developing 20 new electric models by 2023 as part of a $20 billion investment in electric and autonomous technologies. That includes reviving Hummer as an all-electric SUV in early 2022 and building a $2.3 billion battery plant with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd. in northeast Ohio.
Ford plans to sell a Mustang-inspired, all-electric SUV, and Jeep will offer a plug-in hybrid version of top-selling Wrangler. Both models are due out later this year.
Nissan NSANY -0.69% Motor Co., which is slashing $2.8 billion in costs as part of a global restructuring, revealed a new electric SUV on Wednesday. The company’s stock rose 7.2% following the news.
Auto-industry executives say they have little choice but to press ahead because stricter air-pollution rules in Europe and China require them to reduce tailpipe-emissions or face stiff penalties.
Including hybrids, half of the roughly 350 new models expected to be brought to market in the next few years will be electrified in some way, said John Murphy, senior automotive analyst at Bank of America Corp.
“There’s just no screwing around here by the industry,” Mr. Murphy said. “There’s a real recognition they need to get this done.”

Scania produces trucks and buses in Europe, South America and Asia and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sustainable transport solutions. 96,500 trucks and buses were delivered to customers in 2018 – 19,000 of which were built at the Swedish plant in Södertälje. 20,700 of Scania’s total workforce of 52,100 are employed in Sweden. In early 2018, Scania invested €10 million in the battery manufacturing company Northvolt. The collaboration concerns the industrial scale production of battery cells. A joint research consortium called European Battery Union led by Volkswagen and Northvolt was announced recently. The consortium is applying for funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to finance the research, development and industrial scale production of battery technology. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Group is one of the largest car manufacturers in Sweden. 103,000 passenger cars and 16,700 trucks from the Group were registered in Sweden in 2018, accounting for a 27.4 percent share of the passenger car market and a 30 percent share of the truck market. The Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Tiguan are among the top ten passenger car models in Sweden’s registration statistics, putting Volkswagen in second place behind Volvo. Electric vehicles accounted for a market share of eight percent in Sweden in 2018. The Volkswagen Passat GTE Leslie Bothge- photos Volkswagen

2020 Volkswagen Truck Interior, Price, Exterior, Release Date
New Post has been published on https://www.vwcartrend.com/2020-volkswagen-truck-interior-price-exterior-release-date/
2020 Volkswagen Truck Interior, Price, Exterior, Release Date
2020 Volkswagen Truck Interior, Price, Exterior, Release Date – Even though Volkswagen functions very well with the mid-size Amarok pickup truck on the world-wide market, the Sports utility vehicles are the fabric in which this manufacturer develops in the US. Nonetheless, right after VW unveiled the American flavour, mid-size Atlas, the 2020 Volkswagen Truck Concept debuted at the Nyc Auto Show as well as introduced the coming of a different unibody truck to the US. VW declared that the development type is not in the prepare, but the company wishes to sense the pulse of the consumers.
2020 Volkswagen Truck Exterior
The Tanoak Concept is based on the few-row Atlas SUV and other than the colourful exterior design, it borrows a lot from the SUV model. With the Pilot- SUV-centered Ridgeline truck and Hyundai’s assurance to take the unibody pickup truck by the end of the decade, the Tanoak Concept-primarily based truck would start an additional unibody building and the SUV-like-driving a vehicle mid-size pickup truck on the road. No concerns that when VW would start the 2020 Volkswagen Truck before long, the company would implement the similar recipe as Honda did having its unibody Ridgeline truck. The Ridgeline makes use of the Pilot SUV-derived platform and working devices, and the Tanoak Concept is according to VW’s MQB platform that underpins the Atlas SUV.
2020 Volkswagen Truck Exterior
2020 Volkswagen Truck Interior
And despite VW states, it has a lot more room for development in the SUV range in the US the pickup truck variation would bring new prospective buyers and open up a new income-generating niche for the manufacturer. And extraordinarily, VW would not need a lot of work to transform the concept model to the manufacturing-completely ready kind. So, regardless of that no signs from VW that the new truck comes, how could it seem and carry out if this arrives at the 2020 Volkswagen Truck.
2020 Volkswagen Truck Interior
2020 Volkswagen Truck Engine
The Tanoak concept makes the best with Atlas’ 3.6-litre V-6 engine. This engine in combination with the 8-speed auto transmission can produce 275 hp and torque of 266 pound-toes. The Concept type is also the four-tire push model, and VW claims 60 miles per hour in 8.5 secs because of this gear. The creation version would, of course, offer the two-wheel generate in lower marks and a 4-cylinder engine obtainable in the Atlas SUV also need to be in the products checklist. This 2.-liter turbo-three engine in the Truck application form provides 235 horsepower and 258 pound-ft of torque.
2020 Volkswagen Truck Concept
2020 Volkswagen Truck Release Date And Price
VW has not commented on the rumours about the 2020 Volkswagen Truck. The model can have equivalent starting up the price as the new Truck model around $30,000.

Automakers strike climate deal with Calif., rebuffing Trump
https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2019/07/25/major-automakers-strike-climate-deal-with-california-rebuffing-trump-proposed-mileage-freeze/
"Four automakers from three continents have struck a deal with California to produce more fuel-efficient cars for their U.S. fleets in coming years, undercutting one of the [t]rump administration’s most aggressive climate policy rollbacks.
"The compromise between the California Air Resources Board and Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW of North America came after weeks of secret negotiations and could shape future U.S. vehicle production, even as White House officials aim to relax gas mileage standards for the nation’s cars, pickup trucks and SUVs.
"Mary D. Nichols, California’s top air pollution regulator, said in an interview Wednesday that she sees the agreement as a potential 'olive branch' to the [t]rump administration and hopes it joins the deal, which she said gives automakers flexibility in meeting emissions goals without the 'massive backsliding' contained in the White House proposal.
"'What we have here is a statement of principles intended to reach out to the federal government to move them off the track that they seem to be on and onto a more constructive track,' Nichols said, adding that the companies approached California officials last month about a potential compromise.
"In a joint statement, the four automakers said their decision to hash out a deal with California was driven by a need for predictability, as well as a desire to reduce compliance costs, keep vehicles affordable for customers and be good environmental stewards.
..."Under the new accord the four companies, which represent roughly 30 percent of the U.S. auto market, have agreed to produce fleets averaging nearly 50 mpg by model year 2026. That’s just one year later than the target set under the Obama administration, which argued that requiring more-fuel-efficient vehicles would improve public health, combat climate change and save consumers money at the gas pump without compromising safety.
"The share of America’s auto market affected by the new terms could grow significantly if other automakers also join the deal. Last month, the Canadian government also pledged to align mileage requirements for its auto market with California rather than the [t]rump administration.
"As part of the new agreement, California has pledged to certify vehicles from the four automakers and provide the firms with additional flexibility in how they meet each year’s emissions goal. The firms will improve their fleet’s average efficiency by 3.7 percent a year, as opposed to 4.7 percent dictated under the Obama-era rules.
"Now that the transportation sector has emerged as the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, the future gas mileage of the country’s auto fleet will have a profound impact on the nation’s carbon footprint. According to the State Energy & Environmental Impact Center at the New York University School of Law, the [t]rump administration’s plan to freeze mileage standards between 2020 and 2026 would increase greenhouse gas emissions by between 16 million and 37 million metric tons during that period. That’s the equivalent of adding between 3.4 million and 7.8 million cars on the road.
..."Within days of [t]rump’s inauguration, the world’s largest automakers urged [trump] to revisit the standards that President Barack Obama had finalized just before leaving office, which required the industry to increase the average fuel efficiency of the cars and light trucks they sell across the country each year.
"But California, which sets its own tailpipe standards, insisted that it would forge ahead with stricter mileage requirements. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have pledged to follow California’s lead, and several of them are already challenging the [t]rump administration’s move.
"While Nichols said she floated a similar deal last year to the [t]rump administration, the White House announced in February that it had broken off talks with California, saying state officials had 'failed to put forward a productive alternative' to the White House’s plan. For their part, California officials said substantive talks never really began, and concluded that the administration was never serious about negotiating.
"This feud, which threatens to split the nation’s auto market in half, has created a level of uncertainty that makes many car manufacturers skittish.
..."While the new agreement will require car companies to meet stricter targets than under the [t]rump administration’s proposal, it also could provide a hedge in case a Democrat wins the presidential election next year. California regulators committed to maintaining the tailpipe standards even if control of the White House flips."

Move Us Forward: Insights from MIAS 2019
Tumblr media
The Manila International Auto Show, held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, opened on a sunny Thursday morning last April 4. MIAS 2019, Manila’s hottest car show and automotive expo, featured dozens of automotive brands unveiling their new lineup of cars and products on it’s way into the Philippine Market. Brands like Ford, Subaru, Hyundai, Nissan, and Volkswagen, to name a few, showcased both old and new with a variety of vintage and next generation sedans, SUVs, vans, off-roaders, trucks, and hot-rods which decorated the entire expo.
Speaking of next generation vehicles, the highlight of the expo when it comes to the future of the automotive industry was Hyundai’s unveiling of not one, but two new fully electric cars: the Kona Electric and the Ioniq Electric. This is big news for the industry since this poses the question “Is the Philippines ready to go electric?”
So we went to MIAS 2019 to not only witness the unveiling of the Kona electric and the Ioniq electric but also to know more about them and to analyze the potential of the electric car market here in the country. Out team approached Hyundai for an interview about the new electric cars and we were queued to interview the President and CEO. We got in touch with Nissan to ask a few questions about the Leaf and their electric car initiative. Lastly we went to Petron in the expo to ask about the impact of electric cars to their business model. After waiting for a response from the representatives of each brands, we were met with a similar reaction. Put simply, they refused to answer any of our question saying that they were not allowed by their respective corporate departments to  release any in-depth information or even talk about their electric cars or the future of electric vehicles in general. Obviously this was disappointing for us young investigative journalists who wanted answers to the simple yet pressing question. Although my team and I realized that the refusal of giving an answer was apparently an answer in itself.
The experience, though disheartening, was actually eye-opening to the subject of the prospect of electric cars in the Philippines and the relationship between the oil industry and the automotive industry. This may come off as a bold yet unsurprising statement but this would sum up my personal discovery that day in MIAS 2019.
The oil industry and automotive industry works similar to a syndicate or a cartel working hand-in-hand to maximize each other’s profits with the help of the government and unfortunately the media as well.
They work in conjunction with the government to ensure their sustained profits and share in the market through abusive laws and regulations towards gas-powered substitutes like electric cars and efficient public transport. Delaying the implementation of new government protocols for the conducive use of electric vehicles and heavy taxation of the manufacturing and distribution electric cars could possibly be proof of that.
As for the media, we personally got a first-hand look at how the media plays a role in this cartel. Brands and companies are told to refuse giving away any details and withhold information that could possibly help support the use of electric cars and alternative transportation technology. To keep the media hush hush from talking about electric vehicles while endlessly regurgitating the product benefits of their gas-fueled and smoke-belching vehicles, the public’s interest towards a sustainable future in transportation is next to none.
Given that the country has inadequate infrastructure and technology to support the widespread use of electric cars, the aforementioned industries take advantage of the country’s situation by making sure that electric cars and other substitutes to gas-powered vehicles which threaten their business are not given the conducive platform to thrive.
As scary and concerning as this analysis is [which admittedly needs further research to validate] there is still some truth to it. Unfortunately, I as a young journalist, future car owner, and citizen would still have limited power against the massive oil and automotive syndicate that runs the show. For now if our words mean little to the public and to the conglomerates that hold power, maybe our collective actions could bear better results towards a brighter, more transparent, and cleaner future.
For next year’s MIAS 2020, I personally hope that I’ll be proven wrong and see a surge in the release of many electric vehicles from multiple brand at the expo. I would definitely like to come back to MIAS to learn more, experience more, and unveil more insights about the automotive industry and the future of transportation in the country. The way I see it, the Philippines as a developing country is not a disadvantage but an opportunity for growth and the transportation industry has that power to [literally and figuratively] move us forward.

Autel MaxiSYS MS909CV Heavy Duty Truck Scanner --- Expensive But Worth It
The MaxiSys MS909CV provides the full functionality and online repair information you need when diagnosing vehicles, identifying faults, and researching repair issues. It features a powerful Octa-Core processor and a 9.7-inch TFT-LCD capacitive touchscreen for swift diagnosis and optimum viewing. As an intelligent diagnostics and information system, MaxiSys MS909CV not only displays the relevant repair fixes and cases gathered from experienced industry experts but provides step-by-step guidance to ensure the repair is done correctly and efficiently.
What Are The Advantages Of Maxisys MS909CV?
1. ECU Coding And ECU Programing
The Programming and Coding function is used to “re-flash” the vehicle control modules, which allows you to update the computer software of the vehicle to the latest version, as well as to reprogram adaptive data of certain components after making repairs or replacements.
There are two general types of programming operations in the Autel MS909CV:
Coding — also known as Teach-in Program, or Component Adaptation, is used to reprogram adaptive data for vehicle control modules after repairs or replacements of vehicle parts.
Reprogramming — downloads the latest version of the software from the online server database via the Internet access (this procedure is done automatically when the tablet is connected to the Internet, so there is no need to check for software updates yourself), and reprograms the newest version into the vehicle's ECU.
2. Covenient Topology Mapping
A topology tab page displays a system distribution diagram of the vehicle control modules. On the topology tab page, a system scanned with no faults detected appears in green; a system scanned with faults detected will appear in orange. The number of total faults will appear in the upper-right corner. In that way, you can recognize the location and amount of the faults easily and promptly.
3. One-stop Intelligent Diagnostics
Intelligent Diagnostics is an important and powerful function of MaxiSys MS909CV. It is a specific fault code analysis function, with which you can access the most comprehensive and the latest Vehicle System and Detected DTC(s), Technical Service Bulletin, and DTC Analysis. It has been drawn from real shop repair orders and records and with input from experienced industry professionals. Intelligent Diagnostics adopts the scientific data cloud computing technology to match the specific fault code with the exact vehicle model. And the data has been verified by automotive maintenance professionals.Check Autel MS909CV Price
4. 30+ Hot Functions
The Maxisys MS909CV is able to meet most truck maintenance demands such as Oil Reset, EPB, BMS, ABS Bleed, TPMS, Airbag Reset, DPF Reg, IMMO Service, Injector Coding, SAS Calibration, Suspension Calibration, Throttle Adaption, ABS/SRS, Gear Learning, ect.
5. Active Test And Guided Function
The Active Test function is used to access vehicle-specific subsystem and component tests. Available tests vary by vehicle. During an active test, the tablet sends commands to the ECU to activate the actuators. This test determines the integrity of the system or part by reading ECU data or by monitoring the operation of the actuators. Such tests may include toggling a solenoid, relay, or switching, between two positions.
6. Expansive Vehicle Coverage
Autel MaxiSys MS909CV professional diagnostic tool comes with unparalleled vehicle coverage of more than 80 American, Asian and European vehicle makes. It can cover vehicles up to 2019, 2020, and some up to 2021.
