All-New 2025 Ford Fusion Sedan Exclusive Review
With sedan sales plummeting and SUV sales soaring, Ford could combine the two vehicle sectors by reviving the Fusion nameplate for an all-new crossover-style station wagon. Unfortunately, the project was never completed. If Ford decides to move forward with this project, the Fusion Active will target the Subaru Outback. This suggests that the Fusion Active will have all-wheel drive, plastic body lining and a higher ride height. There is also a report accessible on Ford USA Cars Media Online on the 2024 Ford Fusion Sedan Exclusive that both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains will be available.
The Ford Fusion, which was discontinued after the 2020 model year, may have been reinvented as a raised station wagon to better fit the brand's portfolio of nearly all SUVs. We've only seen spy pictures, and Ford never introduced such a car in the United States.
Price
The 2023 Ford Fusion Active is expected to cost between $35,000 to $41,000, depending on trim and options. When it goes into production, the Fusion Active will cost around $35,000. We don't know what trim levels will be offered, but we're confident they'll be consistent with other Ford models of the period.
SE$35,000 (estimated). SEL $38,000 (est.). Titanium costs $41,000 (estimated).
Engine, Transmission and Performance
We can only guess about the Fusion Active's engine and transmission options because there are no official details yet. We can almost guarantee that all-wheel drive will be available. There are also reports that Ford will offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the wagon. These two electrical installations may be identical or comparable to the installation that powers the Escape small crossover. This requires a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine combined with two electric motors. The Fusion Active could potentially receive the Escape's 250-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
The Fusion Active's prospective interior design, passenger space and trunk volume are completely unknown. We expect it to look similar to Ford models at the time, such as the electric Mustang Mach-E crossover and mid-size Explorer SUV. These models show that the Fusion will have a fully digital gauge cluster, a vertically oriented center screen, and customizable internal storage. We also anticipate that the Fusion Active will offer a comfortable rear seat and ample cargo space to compete with the Outback.
entertainment and connectivity
The Ford Sync infotainment system will be available on the Fusion Active. We expect a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Likewise, built-in navigation and Wi-Fi hotspot will be among the alternatives.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features Ford never specified what driver assistance technology would be available in the station wagon, but we expect automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane keeping assist. It makes sense that the Fusion Active has Ford's BlueCruise hands-free highway driving mode as an option. Key safety elements may include:
Standard automatic emergency braking. Standard lane departure warning with lane keep assist. Available adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode.

UAE: How they got a spacecraft to Mars
The UAEâs space agency sent its first mission to Mars in 2020, less than ten years after it was set up. So how did they pull it off?
On July 19, 2020, a few months after a global pandemic had paralyzed the world, a rocket took off from Tanegashima, a small island in the south of Japan.
On board was a small spaceship just over 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide, weighing about the same as a Ford Focus car. It had many important cameras and spectrometers on board for its upcoming mission, which would take more than 493 million km (306 million miles) from Earth. On top of its gold body was a big black radio antenna that would send its data across the vast, cold void of space to controllers sitting at their monitors.
The name of the spaceship was âHope.â However, it wasnât from the United States, Russia, or the European Union. Instead, Hope was the first spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) to go further than an orbit around the Earth. If it works, it will be the first Arab spaceship to reach Mars, and the UAE will be only the fifth country in the world to put a spaceship in orbit around Mars.
As the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary, its space agency put its reputation on the line by sending a spaceship into orbit around Mars on the first try to send back information about the weather on Mars that had never been seen before.
UAE didnât have a space agency six years before the launch
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) is at the far end of Dubai International Airport, about half an hourâs drive east of the Burj Khalifa. Itâs small compared to other space centers. You could lose it in the parking lot of NASAâs massive Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The UAESA, less than ten years old, runs this group of offices, workshops, and clean rooms. From here, much of the work was done to help guide the Emirates Mars Mission to the Red Planet.
It is one of the most ambitious new companies in the space business. However, it opened in 2014. So, a six-year effort to create a pan-Arab space program like the European Space Agency didnât work out. This made the UAE want to start its space agency and may help explain why it moves so quickly.
Before it had its space agency, the UAE had already launched seven satellites. All of them were made by companies outside of the UAE, like EADS in Europe, Boeing in the U.S., and Satrec Initiative in South Korea. But it was in 2018 that the country could make its own. The Earth-sensing satellite KhalifaSat was built by a team of Emirati engineers at Satrec Initiativeâs facilities in South Korea.
KhalifaSat was launched into space in 2018 on a Proton rocket from the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakhstan. It took high-resolution pictures of Earth from 613 kilometers (380 miles) up. These pictures could be used for everything from planning cities to helping people after a natural disaster. But the satellite was also meant to start a new space industry in the Emirates from scratch.
Omran Sharaf was in charge of the Emirates Mars Mission in February 2022. Sharaf, who is 38, says that what made him want to do the mission was the âtriple helix model, where the private sector, the government, and academics all work together so that this overlap can happen. And not have each area work on its own.â
With this, the UAE put its money on the line to become one of the best space agencies of the 21st century. During the Cold War, these things would have seemed impossible. But exploring space in the 2020s will be a very different thing. The geopolitical rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, which was the main driver of the space race, has broken up. It has many more people involved, including businesses like SpaceX in the U.S. and new agencies from small countries like the UAE.
In the past, when space programs put satellites into orbit, they turned their attention to the Moon, our closest neighbor. Not the UAE, though.
The crash in the aviation industry of the Gulf States during the coronavirus pandemic may have been good for the young space industry. As travel bans took hold, long-haul hubs like Dubai and Abu Dhabi were almost empty. Before the pandemic, the aviation industry was expected to make nearly half of the countryâs GDP by 2030. In 2018, it made up almost a quarter of the countryâs GDP. So, the government has had to find other ways to keep its economy strong.
Read Also:Â Falcon Heavy Rocket launches after three years
The Emirates Mars Mission wasnât just a way to show the world the UAE flag. The main goal was to get the complete picture of Marsâs weather cycles that have ever been seen. Three main tools on the spacecraft would be used to study Mars.
The first was a high-resolution imaging unit that measured the amount of water, ice, dust, and other particles in the planetâs atmosphere. Next, an infrared spectrometer would measure the temperature of the planetâs surface and the amount of dust in its atmosphere by measuring how much light it gives off. Finally, the ultraviolet spectrometer on Hope would measure the whole planetâs atmosphere and look at its hydrogen and oxygen levels. Hydrogen and oxygen are the building blocks of water, which is the key to life.
Even though more than 30 spacecraft and landers have been to Mars, most of them only took pictures of its weather. Hope planned to do something much more ambitious. It would go into an orbit to let it take a global picture of Marsâ climate and track it through its distinct seasonal changes.

I would fucking die for this owl.
2). 303 notes - Feb 9 2020
GF - Dr. Mystery (A gift I did for the amazing @siro-cyllâ.)
Ever since the Pines family had returned to Gravity Falls for the summer, Soos and Stan shared the role of Mr. Mystery. It was primarily Soosâ responsibility so that Stan could sit in his boxers for as long as he wanted, but every so often - to give the old man something to do or so Soos could work on a project or a repair - it was like the good ole days with the original My. Mystery scamming tourists and a humble handyman making the shack stand strong.
Unfortunately, Soos caught a bad case of the summer flu, and so to try to keep two old men and two young teenagers from getting sick, he quarantined himself in his room and Stan had to fill in the My. Mystery role. It felt good to be back in his old ways for a bit, amazing gullible tourists with made-up attractions; he had been doing this for thirty years, he could do it for a week, right?
3). 253 notes - Feb 5 2020
GF - Tiger Stripes (Another gift for @siro-cyllâ!)
With the soft, warm steam coming from his mug, the pleasant early-morning sun baking his naked chest, and the cool breeze awakening his senses gradually, it would be an understatement to say that Ford was comfortable.
The breeze ruffled his fluffy charcoal-gray hair playfully before disappearing, leaving behind a still Summerâs air. While it is true that he became cold easily, one of the reasons why he wore turtleneck sweaters all year-round, the star his planet revolved around warned his exposed skin pleasantly and Ford felt no anxiety nor unpleasant chill as he stood on the porch, watching the day begin.

5). 197 notes - Feb 14 2020
GF - Sweatertown (... I may or may not have gone overboard back in Feb. Sorry, @siro-cyllâ. ^^; )
It was raining that day. Maybe that was why it took Ford awhile to decide that it wasnât a figment of his imagination he was hearing, or another natural sound the woods would make in this weather. No, no it was definitely crying.
6). 180 notes - Oct 9 2020
GF - Canât Stand It (Oh gosh, a gift for @ho-ne-yeâ that she AND @sealbatrossâ were kind enough to draw for. Thank you so so much guys!)
Stan was having a bad day. Well, a bad week. Scratch that, a bad month.
It was March, a beautiful time out in the Arctic. For several weeks the Stan twins hardly ever saw the sun or didnât see it at all. Closer to the holidays they traveled down south to Northern Europe, exploring the United Kingdom and the Northern Islands in order to enjoy daylight, but now that Summer was approaching and Spring was on their side, the Stan Oâ War II was moving up to sail above Canada, breaking melting ice and meeting new creatures.
7). 163 notes - Mar 18 2020
GF - Boxing (... How does the saying go? What goes around comes around? Do something nice and the world will do something nice in return. Huh. Iâm noticing a pattern with all of my top 10s... Anywho! I did this one for @artsymeesheeâ!)
It all started back when the Pines family first arrived back at the Mystery Shack. Mabel was up in the storage room (It was much fuller than wise, but the attic was used as a bedroom at the moment.) and had dragged Dipper along with her to help find some old photographs. With only two weeks to work on her special birthday present for her grunkles, she needed all the help she could get in making them the perfect gift: a new scrapbook full of old photos of Glass Shard Beach and pictures Mabel had saved on her phone and was going to print of the old sailors out at sea.
8). 136 notes - Feb 10 2020
GF - Arm Wrestling (ANOTHER gift for @siro-cyllâ! Seriously, theyâre a gem for tolerating me. XD )
Fiddleford cleared his throat, a feeble attempt to get his colleagueâs attention, but to no avail. He sighed and sat cross-legged on the grass, his backpack full of gear by his side. He propped up his head by his chin and on his fist, his elbow on one knee, and he watched half-bored, half-amused, as his best friend arm-wrestled a unicorn.
And no, the author did not mean to put down âharmed, wrestled and mournâ, nor did the composure of this tale mean âalarmed and sworn inâ. No, the anomaly-researcher was truly arm-wrestling a unicorn, and had been at it for a few hours now.
9). 127 notes - Oct 27 2020
GF - Amalia (OH MY! @artsymeesheeâ had blessed us so I had decided to give her something in return.)
The snow reflected the tiny amount of sunlight the capital of Iceland received. Spring was coming, though still a ways off, but the large island still welcomed the sun that was starting to rise earlier every day and stay longer as February was coming to a close.
10). 123 notes - Jul 26 2020

#365daysofbiking Contrasting views:
Saturday December 19th 2020 â A ride out with my friend though Canwell to Hints, and up through Tamhorn returning to Lichfield after dark for a photographic explore.
The countryside was wet, and sodden, and I don't think Iâve seen Hints Ford that swollen in a decade. But it was good to get back there, even with the shock of works ongoing for HS2.
Lichfield itself was lovely: It rained as we got there, and after a heavy but thankfully short shower, it was great to catch the diminutive city at Christmas with few people around.
Most lovely, though was my first sighting of spring flower shoots. There will be a spring, and nature knows that better times are on their way.
Such a strange year.

Bram Stokerâs Dracula and the Seduction of Old School Movie Magic
https://ift.tt/3j6X6Ga
It was one of the most challenging shots in Bram Stokerâs Dracula. Sitting before Roman Coppolaâs second unit camera was a 50/50 mirror, the kind that was once commonplace in any illusionistâs magic shop, but which hadnât seen the inside of a Hollywood studio in decades. On the other end of the glass lay Winona Ryder in bed, ostensibly asleep but soon to be bedeviled by a monstrous vampire.
Yet co-star Gary Oldman wasnât on hand that day. Instead, at about a 90-degree angle away from Ryderâs boudoir, stood a duplicate set of the same size and shape, but buried in black velvet Duvetyne. And in that blackness, smoke created by dry ice was oozing its way around the velvet. When lit by green lights and reflected in the mirror, a sentient emerald mist suddenly appeared in the same room as Ryder. Dracula manifested out of thin air.
âThat was a good one, if I may brag a little, in that it was a backwards photography [shot] with a 50/50 mirror,â Roman says in 2020. Itâs been nearly three decades since that day on set at the legendary Culver Studios, and Roman Coppola is a bit older and far more seasoned, yet when he looks back at what he and his team achieved on Bram Stokerâs Dracula, he canât help but marvel. After all, you could now run a video taken by your iPhone in reverse with the swipe of a finger. But there they were in 1991, âpuppeteeringâ dry ice fog in reverse, so it would appear to be sneaking below a mattress when reflected off a mirror and captured at a 45-degree angle in a camera that was running its film backwards.
In truth itâs more or less the same effect John Henry Pepper invented in 1862 to conjure a ghost on stage. Literal smoke and mirrors in the digital age.
When Bram Stokerâs Dracula opened in November 1992, it astonished the industry and silenced many of Francis Ford Coppolaâs sharpest critics. Snarked about in the press beforehand as âBonfire of the Vampiresââa reference to Brian De Palmaâs misbegotten Bonfire of the Vanities (1990)âthe whispers were that director Coppola had created a lurid and weird vampire movie based on one of the most oversaturated characters in fiction. Well, Bram Stokerâs Dracula was certainly lurid and weird, but in the best possible way.
Originally conceived as a Victorian manâs repressed anxieties about lust and passion being given demonic shape, Coppolaâs vision for Dracula was entirely divorced from the pop culture image of Bela Lugosi in a cape. While the movie was marketed as the director of The Godfather going back to the 1897 source novel that no one had ever faithfully adapted (which turned out to be only partially true), the movieâs true appeal lies in its decadent imagery. Itâs a marriage of lavish costumes, freaky makeup, and half-forgotten magicianâs effects. And the last bit was given new life by Francisâ son, Roman, who became the filmâs visual effects director.
Somehow it all came together, with performers such as Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Waits, and Ryder going so big that their cries threatened to burst through the soundstage walls. The hypnotic union thrilled audiences, who made Bram Stokerâs Dracula a surprise holiday blockbuster, and was ultimately celebrated by the industry, which awarded the movie three Oscars, including one for Eiko Ishiokaâs dazzling costumes and Greg Cannonâs makeup. The irony is that, in its way, it was the industryâs skepticism toward Francis Ford Coppola that made the movieâs unusual vision possible.
âFor some reason I always thought it was unfair I had the reputation of being a director who spent a lot of money, which is not really the case,â Francis said in a recent interview with film critic F.X. Feeney. âThe only movie that I really spent a lot of money on, and went way over budget, was Apocalypse Now.âÂ
Be that as it may, when Ryder first piqued Coppolaâs interest about making a Dracula movie, which as it turned out was a favorite novel from his youth, he knew the studio would never agree to Coppolaâs first inclination: As with going to the jungles of the Philippines on Apocalypse Now or Sicily in The Godfather, Coppola initially imagined shooting Dracula in Transylvania and inside actual crumbling castles.
âI knew the studio would be a little leery of getting this director with three names to do this Dracula picture, and possibly go off to Romania, and itâd be a Heavenâs Gate scenario, or Apocalypse Now scenario, so I played into that. I said, âYou know, we could go and make the film in Romania, we could go to the real Castle Dracula⊠or I could make it all in the studio⊠In fact, Iâll make the entire picture right in a soundstage, a group of soundstages right under your noses. They just loved it, they ate it up.â
That was how Francis pitched himself into the movie, but how he made it worthwhile stemmed from two separate ideas bleeding into one otherworldly vision: First that the laws of physics would never apply when you were in the presence of a vampire; and second, if he was going to attempt to authentically return to the Victorian world of Stokerâs 1897 novel, he also would return to the early world of cinema where the laws of physics were never even considered.
âThe period of the turn of the century was the birth of movies,â Francis said. âAnd movies, as you know, largely came about because of magicians who started to use the cinema to make illusionsâŠ. Thatâs when I became excited about the idea of [having] this story 100 percent shot in soundstages and not only using illusions and magic, and effects, but using effects as they were done at the turn of the century, which was in-camera.â
Thus entered Roman Coppola. Only 26 when Bram Stokerâs Dracula went before cameras, Roman wasnât necessarily his fatherâs first choice to lead the visual effects. While Francisâ accounts have varied over the years as to whether his first head of special effects quit or was fired, the one consistency in Francisâ telling is that modern effects experts were exasperated by the idea of using almost no optical printers or new digital effects, and instead focusing on in-camera tricks. âAbsurdâ was the word Francis heard. But as it so happened, his son already had a passion for magic and the old ways, absurd though they may be.
âI was involved [on the movie] already,â Roman says. âI was going to be second unit [director], and we wanted the effects and second unit all to be one group effort, and do that stuff live. And when I started to take certain leadership and do storyboards, and supervise certain preparation, it was just clear that I was able to direct these efforts in a way that was more in my dadâs wishes, which is to really genuinely, deeply embrace the idea of total adhesion to âhow would they have done it back in the day?ââ
In retrospect Roman taking over leadership on the effects in Bram Stokerâs Draculaïżœïżœïżœto the point where heâs given the title card of âVisual Effects and Second Unit Directorâ in the end creditsâseems natural. Ever since his uncle David Shire introduced him to theatrical magic as a young child, Roman has had a lifelong fascination with the tricks of illusion and sleight of hand. He still recalls boyhood days spent at Los Angelesâ Hollywood Magic store and San Franciscoâs House of Magic, learning the trade of visual trickery, such as John Pepperâs âPepperâs Ghost,â and staying up to watch Paul Michael Glaser in the 1976 TV movie The Great Houdini. In San Francisco, he saw Tony Slydini on stage.
âAfter 12 and 13, I stopped being so active,â Roman says. âBut later, as a younger person in my 20s, I started to get back into it and get a lot of books, and collect certain apparatuses. Itâs just something I found a real love for.â

The Bleeding Heart of Dracula
By David Crow
It also perfectly positioned him to spearhead Draculaâs visual effects. And one of the first things Roman and his team did was curate a film reel, or âvisual library,â of all the points of reference from classic cinema they could use as inspiration.
âThe movies that were much more points of reference are a touch later, but still drawing on the same principles,â Roman says when we mention early cinema pioneers, including Georges MĂ©liĂšs. âJean Cocteau was a particular influence, Beauty and the Beast [1946], Orpheus [1950], and Blood of a Poet [1930]. So those are all movies that we drew a lot of inspiration from.âÂ
Indeed, during the scene where Keanu Reevesâ Jonathan Harker explores Castle Dracula, a single carved arm in the wall is holding a candelabra in homage to Beauty and the Beast. Meanwhile Mario Bavaâs Black Sunday (1960) inspired the nightmarish imagery of Harkerâs carriage ride through a desolate mountain range, with the ominous passing tree branches actually being grips whacking the carriage as it was rocked in place.
Other films in the reel might include F.W. Murnauâs Nosferatu (1922) or Carl Th. Dreyerâs Vampyr (1932), but Roman cites the biggest influences as being actual books on magic he turned to for research. Some were as old as Stokerâs novel itself. Erik Barnouwâs The Magician and the Cinema (1981) was a major touchstone on the movie; Sam Sharpe, author of Neo Magic (1932) and Conjurersâ Optical Secrets (1985) was another; and then crucially there was Magic: Stage Illusions, Special Effects and Trick Photography, which was written by Albert A. Hopkins in 1897.
Explains Roman, âThose books were the bibles of the research, and those have all sorts of references.â For instance, recall the grandiose prologue of the film. With baroque glee the movie begins not in 1897 but 1462. That is the year the real-life Vlad the Impaler repelled the Ottoman Empire and protected Christendom by slaughtering thousands of Turks. The sequence was Francisâ invention, and one he called his âOrigin of Batmanâ scene on the set. But rather than actually film a battle scene, or even actual daylight, the warring portion of the sequence is completely captured via unnatural silhouette, with shadow puppets before a blood-red sky standing in for actual humans as they are impaled on a forest of pikes.
Says Roman, âIf you get the book of Hopkinsâ Magic, you will see other things like shadowgraphy, which is using shadow puppets. There was a guy named Caran dâAche, who I think became famous because heâs the namesake of the Swiss colored pencil company. But he was the originator, or at least excelled in, shadowgraphy. And when you see the opening of Dracula, all those shadow puppets, that was inspired by an example from that book.â
This focus on the classical principles of stagecraft and magic, reverse photography and compositing images with a forced perspective, is the secret of Bram Stokerâs Draculaâs lingering appeal. As Roman points out, there were no effects they feared wouldnât work. If they could achieve how things were done then, theyâd appear inexplicable in the dawning age of digital effects.
âThereâs a lot of steps and a lot of process that can be painstaking, but I donât think we did anything that was pushing a boundary,â he says. âI think everything was an accepted principle that we knew, âWell, this is going to work if we do it right.â There was nothing groundbreaking. We adhered to all the old tricks.âÂ
There could certainly be setbacks, Roman recalls during Draculaâs voyage to London on the doomed Demeter that they exposed the same negative to five passes of filming. This is to say they attempted to combine five separately filmed images as the camera swung on the set by rewinding the film before each new pass. But because the frame line was incorrect on one of the passes, the whole multi-step take was ruined.
But the effects they did achieve all have a potency that register as alien to our modern eye. Some can be as simple as running the film backward in the camera, giving a macabre, unnatural sense of movement as Sadie Frostâs newly turned vampire Lucy climbs into her coffin after being accosted with a crucifix. In reality, she was filmed simply climbing out of it. Others might be slightly more complex, such as a black matte box being used over multiple passes.
For instance, when rats appear to run upside down on a girder above Jonathan Harker in the castle, two passes were used. In the first, the camera was upside down with the black matte covering the top of the lens as rats ran across a piece of set; then the camera was turned upright, the film rewound, and the other half of the lens was exposed while the original portion was covered as Reeves was burned into the negative.

BBC/Netflix Draculaâs Behind-the-Scenes Set Secrets
By Louisa Mellor
Among my personal favorites is the extreme perspective of Ryderâs 1462 Princess Elisabeta flinging herself from a castle parapet into a river, which Roman reveals âwas basically a puppet with a forced perspective, and a little river below, [with] some tricks to make the scale look correct.â
Another was the much more complex series of techniques used during the vignette of Jonathan Harker traveling by train into Transylvania. In the finished film, Reeves sits in a shadowy train compartment with stark mountains out the window. Soon they fade away into darkness as Oldmanâs predatory eyes appear on the horizon. Outside the train, Harkerâs journal entry about the dayâs travel is visible in the frame, running the length of the train track and just below the crossing transport.
âThat was done by Gene Warren Jr. at Fantasy II [Film Effects], and that was multi-pass, multiple exposures,â Roman says. Among them was a rear projection created over two passes on the same piece of film. The first was comprised of multiple layers of the mountain range background moving at different speeds from right to left, while the camera moved left to right. In the second pass, the lights were turned out and Oldmanâs eyes, as filmed by Roman, were projected as the only source of light onto the same background. All of this was then rear projected behind Reeves in a separate shot while he sat in his carriage. Conversely, in one of his close-ups, a map of 19th century Transylvania appears on his face via front projection.
And as for the journal in the same frame as the train? According to visual effects camera operator Christopher Lee Warren in âIn Camera: The Naive Effects of Dracula,â they built a 20-foot wide replica of Harkerâs journal entry so it could stand 10 feet in each direction between the camera and a miniature train, all to get the right type of sunset shadow being cast across its pages.
As just one in a string of intricate effects and set-pieces achieved by Roman and his team, the effectsâ cumulative impact is immeasurable. In its way, Bram Stokerâs Dracula works on the level Francis wanted: He was able to bring it closer to Stokerâs world and plot, if not necessarily Stokerâs themes. As Francis more openly admits in recent years, when Ryder first approached him with a draft of James V. Hartâs script for Dracula, it was about a gushing love story between the dashing Count and Mina Murray Harker.
Ironically, that may be the element of the film that lingers most on subsequent pop culture depictions of Dracula. But it was Francisâ insistence on the script being rewritten, and rewritten again, to incorporate all of Stokerâs narrative beats, side characters, and supernatural wickedness, as well as the sense of a British society in upheaval. It was the dawn of a new century, the twilight of an old monarch, and an age for scientific discovery and technology, be it in the realm of blood transfusion⊠or moviemaking.
Bram Stokerâs Dracula is at its best when it drinks deeply from its dreamlike environment and atmosphere, capturing the base dread in Victorian culture of suddenly being confronted by what it deemed irrational or lascivious. And those elements mingle to gory delight when the aspects Coppola cared about most took center stage.
âThe focus [was] on the actors, the costumes, and this unusual way of doing live-action and multiple take effects done in-camera,â Francis said. And when itâs Hopkins, Richard E. Grant, and the rest of the ensemble standing around Sadie Frost in an extravagant 19th century wedding dress while being filmed in reverse, its sense of tone and style is overwhelming.

Talalayâs Terrors! The Director Breaks Down Her 5 Scariest Scenes
By Kayti Burt
On his end, Roman met that goal, and underlined the movieâs macabre madness, with ideas as primal and orgasmic as firing waves of blood out of air cannons during the scene where Dracula kills LucyââThat was just a total last minute thing of like⊠âHey donât we have a bunch of blood bullets? Letâs put it in those air cannons and see what happensââand it also paid off in old-fashioned Hollywood bravura, like the climax where Harker and the other vampire hunters chase Dracula down the Borgo Pass.
As second unit director, Roman shot much of that finaleâas well as about 20 percent of the finished filmâon the same soundstages where Merian C. Cooper filmed King Kong (1933) and David O. Selznick burned Atlanta in Gone with the Wind (1939). And a few years before Jurassic Park changed movie effects forever, Roman and his father were in that space, filming Reeves, Hopkins, and the rest approaching on horseback an enormous looming castle⊠which was created by Michael Pangrazio and Craig Barron by painting it on matted glass.
âThat is remarkable that that would still be done in our time,â Roman reflects. âItâs hard to imagine that will ever happen again, latent image matte painting. Itâs a great way to do something, but you need to have the skill to do it⊠and thatâs just sort of a dying art.â
Not that Roman doesnât still indulge the old ways. Many of his modern collaborators adore miniatures, for example. âI work with Wes Anderson often, and he likes to use miniatures, and he does it pretty liberally,â Roman says. âSo I think thereâs always a place for that.âÂ
But composite shots? One where you put a sky or castle in the same shot with a miniature and live-action over multiple passes?
âItâs not possible to imagine someone wishing to do that on an optical printer, because for one, they donât really exist [anymore],â Roman says. âNumber two, it degrades the image, and thereâs a lot of reason not to.â
Like the in-camera effects that fascinated two generations of Coppolas, even the optical printing techniques they were largely forgoing in 1992 have become obsolete in the age of computer generated imagery. Even the backwards-looking Bram Stokerâs Dracula has a single CG effect, with Roman conceding the transformation at the end of the movie, where demonic Dracula turns back into Prince Vlad in death, was done with CGI. But as Roman says, it was used judiciously at the conclusion as âa real punctuation mark.â
And perhaps Bram Stokerâs Dracula is itself a punctuation mark. A last hurrah for antiquated styles of moviemaking that were long gone, or about to be, and a chance to open a magicianâs bag of tricks to fool the eye into believing, as Francis says, âthe earth doesnât rotate at exactly the right speedâ in the presence of a vampire. Itâs why the movie has aged like fine wine (if you drink the stuff), and likely will continue to do so while many other effects-driven movies are practically timestamped by their imagery.
âIt was unique to a time and place,â Roman says. âIâm sure other movies, other horror movies in particular, over time will represent a time and a place, but this seems to be the one that represents that time and place.â
That time, and perhaps that of a century earlier.

New Written Review from Mike Crowley on Youâll Probably Agree: 10 Reasons Why âBlade Runner 2049â is better than âBlade Runnerâ
If you havenâtâ seen the movie, see it then read this. No intro, letâs jump right in.
1. K is a replicant
The reveal of Kâs genetic code, or lack thereof, flips everything we assume the movie will be on its head. We are learning along with K what it means to exist. Do we as humans, live like replicants? Do we obey a society that treats us like trash but breath anyways out of the fear of death? Where we viewed âBlade Runnerâ mostly through Deckardâs eyes who didnât have much of a personality, Kâs lack of a character is his entire purpose for existing. For K to emote is to face death.
Where Harrison Fordâs Deckard entire arc was us questioning if heâs human or not (despite what Ridley Scott unequivocally says), thereâs nothing much of substance to Officer Deckard. He gets drunk, retires replicants, thatâs it. Name one thing that makes Deckard standout? Iâll wait. Ryan Goslingâs Officer K goes from a machine that is dying spiritually on the inside to someone wanting to have a purpose in life. All while maintaining his composure, if perhaps too much poise for the film. Anything with a conscious can feel. Whether or not how it was made is as relevant as where you were born or what skin color you are. The importance is that youâre here.
K doesnât seek gratitude nor affirmation. He doesnât suffer from a narcissistic personality. All he wants is not just to be another useless piece of metal.
2. Deckard has depth this time
Being a daddy changes you a lot. Rick isnât just a slouchy drunk who likes to shoot robots out of legal obligation. Heâs a man whoâs principles and love for forbidden things cost him his life. What kind of soul did Deckard have in the first film? Who did he care for? Please donât say, Rachel, we all know why he was attracted to Rachel. Like Winston in 1984, Deckard rejects Big Brother for a life of pain to gain a glimmer of happiness. ï»ż
3. Itâs horrifyingly relevant
Denis Villeneuve based the imagery in 2049 on a planet that has become degraded with pollution. The buildings are extrapolating enormous amounts of water into the atmosphere, the sea wall at the end of the picture will be our new Mount Rushmore, the orange Vegas is happening now. Denis Villeneuve didnât predict the earth looking like this, but his production team was still spot on. A picture that transcends its very style, developing a look that will be discussed on its merits separate from the ubiquitous original, is a stunning achievement.
Everything isnât dystopian because thatâs the way it was in the book. Itâs what will happen to us in real life, why weâd look for colonies to live on if we had the technology or funding towards NASA to do so. God help us all.
4. The love story questions the essence of relationships
The story between K and Joi further examines the meaning of love, sex, and mortality, with the two being different versions of artificiality. When the default sexed-up version of a naked Joy pops up on the screen, we are emotionally mortified. Some of us may be repulsed to observe a character we care for utilized like a thirsty Godzilla.
The towering ad tries to seduce K tempting him to buy it, rendering everything Joi said to K throughout the picture questionable. Its manipulation solidifies his final decision in life to help another man. Weâre not sure if she loved him or said what it thought it wanted him to hear throughout the narrative. Possibly Joi herself didnât know her intentions. An unusual amount of nuance and uncertainty rests in the love story. Who do we love? Why do we love? Do we love by the heart or the heart of our designers whom we donât know?
Meanwhile, Deckard was just drunk and horny when he bashed Rachel up against the wall. Sorry, that really was all there was to their passion despite what Wallace says.
5. The movie was an honest commentary about how the world views woman
Hereâs a controversial one. A lot of women were disgusted by the way they were depicted in the film. Outwardly watching the movie, I canât blame them. Iâll let Mr. Villeneuve speak for himself. âI am very sensitive to how I portray women in movies. This is my ninth feature film and six of them have women in the lead role. The first Blade Runner was quite rough on the women, something about the film noir aesthetic. But I tried to bring depth to all the characters. For Joi, the holographic character, you see how she evolves. Itâs interesting, I think. What is cinema? Cinema is a mirror on society. Blade Runner is not about tomorrow; itâs about today. And Iâm sorry, but the world is not kind on women.â
Villeneuve is right. Women today are still sexualized. Even with the Me Too movement, women are continually seen as sex objects or subservient slaves in a male-dominated society. Villeneuve isnât interested in painting a rosy picture that Hollywood does for female roles to make the audiences feel comfortable. Itâs an honest reflection on who we are. What we see is what we donât want to see, but thatâs part of the honesty of cinema.
6. The score is mesmerizing
Another point in which I may face some contention. Yes, Vangelisâ score is iconic, but it only works for the era it was composed in. Much of its mixture of bleeps, blops, and wind chimes are a product of its time. A lot of emotion is missing from the score other than the opening theme and âTears In Rain.â Hearing much of the soundtrack while on the road, I sometimes thought I was listening to something from a porno. Take a listen to âWait For Meâ in the soundtrack and tell me otherwise. Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Walfischâs score is timeless while also paying respect to Vangelisâ synthetic use in the original. It dives into the characterâs mind providing a replication of something more human than what Vangelis composed.
7. It thematically ties more directly to âDo Androids Dream of Electric Sheepâ than âBlade Runnerâ does.
âBlade Runnerâ got the overall gist of Phillip K Dickâs novel. Replicants are scared, trying to find a way to survive as Deckard hunts them down. However, the Andies in the movie almost deserve to die. In their quest for more life, they torture and kill multiple civilians. What did the guy making the eyes do to deserve being frozen to death? What about J.R. Sebastian? He was nothing but pleasant to Roy and Pris. Did Roy eye gauge him when he was done with Tyrell?
Aside from Luv (Sylvia Hoeks), our replicants are fully rounded people. Sapper Morton is a watchful protector who was meant to be a NEXUS 8 combat medic; Joiâs true intentions come into question for herself and us. Kâs inner conflict is the central core of the story. All of this revolves around the meaning of existence within a world that has forgotten about you. The introduction of Robo procreation is an evolution of Dickâs ideas, widening his notion of why life exists in the first place.
8. It doesnât get lost in the scale
Many sequels love scope over characters. Remember âThe Matrixâ? Remember how they talked about Zion and all these other things we didnât see? When the sequels brought in Zion, the focus got lost in the spectacle. âThe Matrix Reloadedâ was a bumbling CGI mess of Agent Smith Clones and cave orgies. âThe Matrix Revolutionsâ was a glorified âSpace Invadersâ game. Shoot as many sentinels as you can before becoming overwhelmed. Amidst the sequels bumbling chaos, I missed the smaller scale of the Nebuchadnezzar crew.
The story of â2049â could have focused on the replicant uprising with thousands of robots slamming into humans. We could have gone off-world to finally see what all these other colonies weâve heard about are like. Some have argued that the movie could have borrowed some of its source material from the later novels about replicants creating humans, so on and so forth. All of that sounds incredible in theory. In execution, you would likely get âThe Matrixâ sequels.
A movie that overreaches in scope, attempting to please fans by showing everything. What we got was an incredibly meaningful story that further explores the themes of the original while building upon its world without going too far. We see whatâs beyond L.A. on the dilapidated west coast. The answer is not much. The film aims at minimalism over extravaganza.
9. Weâre still talking about it
After being MIA for decades, âBlade Runner 2049â isnât forgotten. I canât say the same for âSuperman Returns,â âMonsters University,â âThe Incredibles 2,â âLive Free or Die Hard,â and âIndiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull.â In fairness, people do talk about Indy 4, but not in a positive fashion. âBlade Runner 2049â returned to the limelight with disastrous box office results yet high accolades, even gaining the Academyâs attention. Ironically it seemed destined to live the life of its predecessor.
â2049â may have tanked because it was a multimillion-dollar art film that respected its audienceâs intelligence. Maybe âBlade Runnerâ was too far gone amongst the public to gain an interest geared almost entirely towards comic books and Disney. I think the trailers after the reveal teaser looked too generic for my own two cents, turning me off from the film for a short while.
Here we are with Honest Trailers in 2020, making a video about a film that came out in 2017. Bloodsoaked orange skies from the headlines mention the atmosphere of this film. Somewhere, about 100 other people are writing their analysis of âBlade Runner 2049â as I type right now. Seven years from now, weâll be talking about why the world is still like âBlade Runner 2049.â Villeneuve made a timeless sequel to be remembered.
10. Itâs better than the first film and one of the best films in the last ten years
Hereâs why youâll probably agree with this one when you put your pitchfork down. Remove your nostalgia goggles. I know itâs hard to do, please, trust me. Look at the points I made above. Think about how ironic the love story is to our lives. The layers of meaning behind Kâs existence is lightyears beyond the featureless Rick Deckard. The picture isnât flawless. Niander Wallace is spectacularly corny in his scenery-chewing grim monologues. Dr. Eldon Tyrell had some ambiguity regarding the morale of his intentions. For that, Iâll give the original the benefit of my doubt. I understand Ryan Gosling was cast to be intentionally deadpan, but itâs okay to emote once. His distant stare in all of his other performances made it difficult for me to discern myself from the actorâs rather dull persona.
With this said, âBlade Runner 2049â understands cinema. Its atmosphere is why we venture into a dark room that takes us to a different place. Denis Villeneuveâs masterful follow up is one of the most orgasmic cinematic experiences I have witnessed in the last ten years that demands a re-screening in 2022 when theatres reopen at an entirely safe capacity. The style doesnât overshadow its substance, which is far richer in detail than the original without grasping at blatant metaphors. âBlade Runner 2049â is slow cinema at its finest, letting us into the characterâs heads, knowing when to be quiet and when to be loud.
Like âThe Empire Strikes Back,â not everyone appreciated the movie at first. Time has been incredibly kind to it, though. I wish the Academy recognized âBlade Runner 2049â beyond its technical marvels in 2018. I suppose it wasnât the type of picture that catches Oscar voterâs eyes. But it has acquired the audienceâs to this day. Now, if you could just look up and to the left for me?

Carrie Mae Weems
Carrie Mae Weems (born April 20, 1953) is an American artist who works with text, fabric, audio, digital images, and installation video, and is best known for her work in the field of photography. Her award-winning photographs, films, and videos have been displayed in over 50 exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and focus on serious issues that face African Americans today, such as racism, sexism, politics, and personal identity.
She said, "Let me say that my primary concern in art, as in politics, is with the status and place of Afro-Americans in the country." More recently however, she expressed that "Black experience is not really the main point; rather, complex, dimensional, human experience and social inclusion ... is the real point."
Early life and education
Weems was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1953, the second of seven children to Carrie Polk and Myrlie Weems. She began participating in dance and street theater in 1965. At the age of 16 she gave birth to her first and only child, a daughter named Faith C. Weems. Later that year she moved out of her parentsâ home and soon relocated to San Francisco to study modern dance with Anna Halprin at a workshop Halprin had started with several other dancers, as well as the artists John Cage and Robert Morris. She decided to continue her arts schooling and attended the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, graduating at the age of 28 with her B.A. She received her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Weems also participated in the folklore graduate program at the University of California, Berkeley.
While in her early twenties, Carrie Mae Weems was politically active in the labor movement as a union organizer. Her first camera, which she received as a birthday gift, was used for this work before being used for artistic purposes. She was inspired to pursue photography after she came across The Black Photography Annual, a book of images by African-American photographers including Shawn Walker, Beuford Smith, Anthony Barboza, Ming Smith, Adger Cowans, and Roy DeCarava, who Weems found inspiring. This led her to New York City, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, where she began to meet other artists and photographers such as Coreen Simpson and Frank Stewart, and they began to form a community. In 1976 Weems took a photography class at the Museum taught by Dawoud Bey. She returned to San Francisco, but lived bi-coastally and was invited by Janet Henry to teach at the Studio Museum and a community of photographers in New York.
Career and work
In 1983, Carrie Mae Weems completed her first collection of photographs, text, and spoken word, called Family Pictures and Stories. The images told the story of her family, and she has said that in this project she was trying to explore the movement of black families out of the South and into the North, using her family as a model for the larger theme. Her next series, called Ain't Jokin', was completed in 1988. It focused on racial jokes and internalized racism. Another series called American Icons, completed in 1989, also focused on racism. Weems has said that throughout the 1980s she was turning away from the documentary photography genre, instead "creating representations that appeared to be documents but were in fact staged" and also "incorporating text, using multiples images, diptychs and triptychs, and constructing narratives." Sexism was the next focal point for her. It was the topic of one of her most well known collections called The Kitchen Table series which was completed in over a two year period, 1989 to 1990 and has Weems cast as the central character in the photographs. About Kitchen Table and Family Pictures and Stories, Weems has said: "I use my own constructed image as a vehicle for questioning ideas about the role of tradition, the nature of family, monogamy, polygamy, relationships between men and women, between women and their children, and between women and other womenâunderscoring the critical problems and the possible resolves." She has expressed disbelief and concern about the exclusion of images of the black community, particularly black women, from the popular media, and she aims to represent these excluded subjects and speak to their experience through her work. These photographs created space for other black female artists to further create art. Weems has also reflected on the themes and inspirations of her work as a whole, saying,
... from the very beginning, I've been interested in the idea of power and the consequences of power; relationships are made and articulated through power. Another thing that's interesting about the early work is that even though I've been engaged in the idea of autobiography, other ideas have been more important: the role of narrative, the social levels of humor, the deconstruction of documentary, the construction of history, the use of text, storytelling, performance, and the role of memory have all been more central to my thinking than autobiography.
Other series created by Weems include: the Sea Island Series (1991â92), the Africa Series (1993), From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried (1995â96), Who What When Where (1998), Ritual & Revolution (1998), the Louisiana Project (2003), Roaming (2006), and the Museum Series, which she began in 2007. Her most recent project, Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, is a multimedia performance that explores "the role of grace in the pursuit of democracy."
In her almost 30-year career, Carrie Mae Weems has won numerous awards. She was named Photographer of the Year by the Friends of Photography. In 2005, she was awarded the Distinguished Photographer's Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the world of photography. Her talents have also been recognized by numerous colleges, including Harvard University and Wellesley College, with fellowships, artist-in-residence and visiting professor positions. She taught photography at Hampshire College in the late 1980s. She was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2013. In 2015 Weems was named a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow. In September 2015, the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research presented her with the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal.
The first comprehensive retrospective of her work opened in September 2012 at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee, as a part of the center's exhibition Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video. Curated by Katie Delmez, the exhibition ran until January 13, 2013, and later traveled to Portland Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts. The 30-year retrospective exhibition opened in January 2014 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This was the first time an "African-American woman [was] ever given a solo exhibition" at the Guggenheim. Weems' work returned to the Frist in October 2013 as a part of the center's 30 Americans gallery, alongside black artists ranging from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Kehinde Wiley.
Weems' work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Tate Museum in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Weems has been represented by Jack Shainman Gallery since 2008.
A full-color, visual book, titled Carrie Mae Weems, was published by Yale University Press in October 2012. The book offers the first major survey of Weems' career and includes a collection of essays from leading and emerging scholars in addition to over 200 of Weems' most important works.
Weems lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and Syracuse, New York, with her husband Jeffrey Hoone. She continues to produce art that provides social commentary on the experiences of people of color, especially black women, in America.
Weems is one of six artist-curators who made selections for Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from May 24, 2019, through January 12, 2020.

The Best Movies on Netflix in India [February 2020]
In its efforts to win Oscars and please its 167 million members, Netflix has been pouring billions into movies recently, including projects from or featuring the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Martin Scorsese, and Michael Bay. One of those â The Irishman â racked up 10 nominations for the streaming service at the 2020 Oscars, though it failed to come away with a single prize. Netflix has also expanded its film efforts in India in the past year, announcing projects from the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. For now though, the strength of its catalogue is still the acquisitions. With over 3,500 movies, Netflix offers more choices than any other platform in India. To pick the best movies on Netflix, we relied on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb ratings to create a shortlist. The last of them was preferred for Indian films given the shortfalls of reviews aggregators in that department. Additionally, we used our own editorial judgement to add or remove a few. This list will be updated once every few months if there are any worthy additions or if some movies are removed from the service, so bookmark this page and keep checking in. Here are the best films currently available on Netflix in India, sorted alphabetically. 12 Monkeys (1995) Inspired by the 1962 French short La JetĂ©e, a prisoner (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to learn more about the virus that wiped out nearly all of humanity. Terry Gilliam directs. 12 Years A Slave (2013) Duped into slavery on the account of a job, Steve McQueen's adaptation of a free New York black man's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) 19th-century memoir is an incredible true story, and an important watch. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) In Stanley Kubrick's highly-influential sci-fi film, humanity charts a course for Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL 9000, to understand the discovery of a black monolith affecting human evolution. It's less plot, and more a visual and aural experience.
3 Idiots (2009) In this satire of the Indian education system's social pressures, two friends recount their college days and how their third long-lost musketeer (Aamir Khan) inspired them to think creatively and independently in a heavily-conformist world. Co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who stands accused in the #MeToo movement. 50/50 (2011) Inspired by a true story, a 27-year-old radio journalist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with spinal cancer and learns the value of friendship and love as he battles the rare disease. Aamir (2008) Adapted from the 2006 Filipino film Cavite, a young Muslim NRI doctor (Rajeev Khandelwal) returning from the UK to India is forced to comply with terrorists' demands to carry out a bombing in Mumbai after they threaten his family. American History X (1998) In a film that's more relevant today than when it was made, a neo-Nazi white supremacist (Edward Norton), who served three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same path. American Hustle (2013) In the late 1970s, two con artists (Christian Bale and Amy Adams) are forced to work for an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) and set up a sting operation that plans to bring down several corrupt politicians and members of the Mafia. Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner star alongside. Andaz Apna Apna (1994) Two slackers (Aamir Khan and Salman Khan) who belong to middle-class families vie for the affections of an heiress, and inadvertently become her protectors from a local gangster in Rajkumar Santoshi's cult comedy favourite. Andhadhun (2018) Inspired by the French short film L'Accordeur, this black comedy thriller is the story of a piano player (Ayushman Khurrana) who pretends to be visually-impaired and is caught in a web of twists and lies after he walks into a murder scene. Tabu, Radhika Apte star alongside. Apollo 13 (1995) Ron Howard dramatises the aborted Apollo 13 mission that put the astronauts in jeopardy after an on-board explosion ate up all the oxygen and forced NASA to abort and get the men home safely. Argo (2012) Ben Affleck directs and stars in this film about a CIA agent posing as a Hollywood producer scouting for location in Iran, in order to rescue six Americans during the US hostage crisis of 1979. Article 15 (2019) Ayushmann Khurrana plays a cop in this exploration of casteism, religious discrimination, and the current socio-political situation in India, which tracks a missing persons' case involving three teenage girls of a small village. A hard-hitting, well-made movie, though ironically, it was criticised for being casteist itself, and providing an outsider's perspective. The Avengers (2012) Earth's mightiest heroes â including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk â come together in this groundbreaking Marvel team-up from writer-director Joss Whedon to stop Thor's adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his alien army from subjugating mankind.
The Aviator (2004) With Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes and Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn, Martin Scorsese dives into the life of the aviation pioneer and film producer, who grapples with severe OCD while his fame grows. Awakenings (1990) Robin Williams and Robert De Niro lead the cast of this drama based on a 1973 memoir of the same name, about a doctor (Williams) who discovers the beneficial effects of a drug on catatonic patients, thereby gifting them a new lease on life. Barfi! (2012) Set in the 1970s amidst the hills of Darjeeling, writer-director Anurag Basu tells the tale of three people (Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D'Cruz) as they learn to love while battling the notions held by society. Beasts of No Nation (2015) With civil war raging across a fictional African nation, this Netflix Original focuses on a young boy who's trained as a child soldier by a fierce warlord (Idris Elba), and the effects it has on him. Before Sunrise (1995) In the first chapter of Richard Linklater's long-drawn-out trilogy, two idealistic twentysomethings, an American man (Ethan Hawke) and a French woman (Julie Delpy), spend the night together walking around in the Austrian capital of Vienna. The Big Lebowski (1998) A guy known as The Dude (Jeff Bridges) seeks payback for his ruined carpet after he's mistaken for a millionaire with the same name in this crime comedy from the Coen brothers. Less about the plot and more about a way of living. The Big Short (2015) Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, a look at Wall Street's penchant for self-profit in a vicious loop that caused the 2007â08 global financial meltdown. Birdman (2014) Alejandro G. Iñårritu won three Oscars including Best Picture for this tale of a washed-up superhero actor (Michael Keaton) who struggles to revive his career with a Broadway play. Known for appearing as if it was shot in a single take, it also starred Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, and Emma Stone. Blade Runner (1982) One of the most influential cyberpunk films ever made is about a burnt-out cop (Harrison Ford) who reluctantly agrees to hunt down a group of fugitive âreplicantsâ, synthetic humans with a limited life-span who aren't allowed to live on Earth. Blue Valentine (2010) Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams lead this drama that shifts between time periods to depict a couple's courtship and how their marriage fell apart. Das Boot (1981) One of the most authentic war movies ever made chronicles the life of a German submarine crew during World War II, as they go through long stretches of boredom and periods of intense conflict, while trying to maintain morale in a capsule 10 feet by 150 feet hundreds of metres under the surface. The Bourne trilogy (2002-07) Technically not a trilogy, but the first three chapters â Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum â starring Matt Damon in the lead as the titular CIA assassin suffering from amnesia were so good that they changed the longest-running spy franchise of all-time: James Bond.
The Breadwinner (2017) This animated film follows a 11-year-old girl living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, who disguises herself as a boy to provide for her family after the father is taken away without reason. Uses wonderfully-drawn vignettes to stress on the importance of storytelling. Bulbul Can Sing (2019) Three teenagers battle patriarchy and the moral police as they explore their sexual identities in Rima Das's National Award-winning drama â and pay for it dearly. Das writes, directs, shoots, edits, and handles costumes. C/o Kancharapalem (2018) Set in the eponymous Andhra Pradesh town, this Telugu film spans four love stories across religion, caste, and age â from a schoolboy to a middle-aged unmarried man. A debut for writer-director Venkatesh Maha, featuing a cast mostly made up of non-professional actors. Capernaum (2018) In the award-winning, highest-grossing Arabic film of all time, a 12-year-old from the slums of Beirut recounts his life leading up to a five-year sentence he's handed for stabbing someone, and in turn, his decision to sue his parents for child neglect. Captain Phillips (2013) The true story of a Somali pirate hijacking of a US cargo ship and its captain (Tom Hanks) being taken hostage, which spawns a rescue effort from the US Navy. The Bourne Ultimatum's Paul Greengrass directs. Cast Away (2000) After his plane crash-lands in the Pacific, a FedEx employee (Tom Hanks) wakes up on a deserted island and must use everything at his disposal and transform himself physically to survive living alone. Castle in the Sky (1986) In the first film officially under the Studio Ghibli banner, a young boy and a girl protect a magic crystal from pirates and military agents, while on the search for a legendary floating castle. Hayao Miyazaki writes and directs. Chupke Chupke (1975) Hrishikesh Mukherjee's remake of the Bengali film Chhadmabeshi, in which a newly-wedded husband (Dharmendra) decides to play pranks on his wife's (Sharmila Tagore) supposedly smart brother-in-law. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan also star. A Clockwork Orange (1971) Set in a near-future dystopian Britain, writer-director Stanley Kubrick adapts Anthony Burgess' novel of the same name, commenting on juvenile delinquency through the eyes of a small gang leader who enjoys "a bit of the old ultra-violence". Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Steven Spielberg's slow-paced sci-fi pic â which spent several years in development, being rewritten over and over â is about an everyday blue-collar guy (Richard Dreyfuss) whose humdrum life turns upside down after an encounter with an unidentified flying object (UFO).
Cold War (2018) Jumping either side of the Iron Curtain through the late 1940s to the 1960s, Oscar-winner PaweĆ Pawlikowski depicts the story of two star-crossed lovers, as they deal with Stalinism, rejection, jealousy, change, time â and their own temperaments. Company (2002) Inspired the real-life relationship between Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan, director Ram Gopal Varma offers a look at how a henchman (Vivek Oberoi) climbs up the mobster ladder and befriends the boss (Ajay Devgn), before they fall out. Dallas Buyers Club (2013) Refusing to accept a death sentence from his doctor after being diagnosed with AIDS in the 1980s, the true story of an electrician and hustler (Matthew McConaughey) who smuggles banned medications from abroad. Dangal (2016) The extraordinary true story of amateur wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) who trains his two daughters to become India's first world-class female wrestlers, who went on to win gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. The Dark Knight (2008) In the second part of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, regarded as the greatest comic book movie ever, Batman (Christian Bale) faces a villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger), he doesn't understand, and must go through hell to save Gotham and its people. Woman Dumped Boyfriend And Quit Job To Travel Across US In Van With Her Dog
Divine On The Road/Instagram
A 24-year-old woman decided to live her best life after breaking up with her boyfriend, so she ditched the 9-5, bought a van and now travels the US with her beloved dog.Â
Sydney Ferbrache, from Indianapolis, Indiana, was inspired to start her new life after seeing a picture of another girl travelling in a van.
Rather than living with envy, the young woman decided to do something about it, and asked her boyfriend at the time to join her on an adventure.

The couple were working â70 to 80 hours a weekâ, with Sydney telling INSIDER they were both âtotally miserableâ, so they purchased an $18,000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and spent thousands of dollars to make it fit for travelling.
She explained:
I saw this picture and it took me down this black tunnel hole of van life. I was scrolling for hours a day on my laptop and in between homework and everything else, just looking at vans.
We bought one, had it shipped to Indianapolis, and that was the start of how I discovered van life.

Sydney and her boyfriend hit the road in September 2017, but the 24-year-old soon realised her partner wasnât âthe oneâ. The keen traveller wanted to âreach for the starsâ, so she decided to go it alone.
The Indiana native decided to start afresh, and let her ex keep the van. Sydney then worked three jobs, as well as a âton of side gigs,â for two months in order to save up for transport of her very own.
By May 2018, Sydney had saved enough to purchase a $24,000 Ford Transit van. She renovated it, adding a full kitchen, a king-size bed and a toilet, and got ready to hit the road.

Just before she set off, however, she decided she needed one more thing to make her setup complete â a golden retriever puppy, named Ella.
The 24-year-old began her adventure earlier this year and has since travelled to 20 different states, including Montana, Utah, Arizona, California and Oregon, as well as Quebec in Canada.
She funds her travels through advertising and affiliate marketing on her website, and by helping people design their own blogs. Sydney shares her adventures through a podcast and on her Instagram page, Divine On The Road.

Recalling her first few days on the road, Sydney said:
It was the most freeing. I truly felt like such a bad*ss. I made this happen, I cannot believe I actually made this happen.
It was such a cool feeling of âIâm driving my home around the country.â
The traveller returns home to in Indiana every few months to see her family and spend some time with her two-year-old nephew, but she has no plans to quit her new-found way of life any time soon.

This morning we went for a long walk through the neighborhood I grew up in. We walked down the court where I played kick ball with all the other kids, showed Ella the trailhead that leads to my secret hideout, and passed the park where I kissed my first love. My whole life I was so desperate to leave this place. I wanted to escape so badly and would dream of all the places Iâd get to explore some day. But itâs funny now that I get to do exactly what I always dreamed of, I drive thousands of miles across the country to get back here. To see the place I deemed mundane and boring. To type this from the kitchen table where I ate breakfast every day before school and had to endure way too many âfamily talksâ. Traveling for me is exciting, intoxicating, and constantly teaches me new things that I would probably never learn otherwise. But being home is familiar, comforting, and re-teaches me all the things Iâve already known but forgot somewhere along the way. â So many of us are desperate to escape. To get out there and leave it all behind. But I wish I wouldâve seen this place for what it was all along. Donât be like me and wait until you return to find the magic where you are now. Thereâs a kind of beauty in the boring that you wonât find in the excitement.

Sydney hopes to make it to Alaska by spring 2020, and plans to visit Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia along the way.
She expressed her love of being on the road, saying:
Iâve never woken up once in the last year and not felt like this isnât exactly what I should be doing. I donât foresee anywhere in the near future where I want to stop, but I also donât want to hold myself to this idea that I have to be on the road.

Someone recently messaged me, âless dog, more vanâ and Iâve actually thought a lot about that lately. Not the comment but the concept. Iâm supposed to be all van and van life and van builds. But the truth is that this van is merely my home and transportation. If it went away tomorrow, Iâd be devastated but I would be okay. Sometimes I like thinking about if the van and this lifestyle wasnât here, what would I be doing? But if Ella went away tomorrow⊠now thatâs something I donât even let cross my mind. My van is my home but my dog is my life. One gets me from point A to point B, but the other quite literally is my other half. I donât mind sharing more van, but never ever expect less dog. In this photo, I hardly see past her. I watch Ella watching everything else. Sheâs my favorite view and the vans got nothing on her. _ In other news, the podcast is still in the works and Iâm so sorry for the delay! Itâs been submitted and Iâm simply waiting on approval now from the various platforms. Still so excited to share all things van AND dog in this really fun, new way.

Sydney went on to encourage other women to follow in her footsteps, adding:
I really believe society has instilled in us that we should be fearful of the world and that we should have a man by our side to see things. We are taught to be scared, we donât feel that way innately.
I like to prove in the way I do things that thatâs not how we have to live our lives.
With Ella for company and the whole world ahead of her, Sydney has certainly chosen an amazing path.
