Ford recalling 85000 SUVs over fears their engines could catch fire
The latest headlines from our reporters across the US sent straight to your inbox each weekday Your briefing on the latest headlines from across the US Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 80,000 of its Explorer vehicles claiming that some of the models have engine problems that could lead to fires. Per a memo released by the US Department of Transportation, the issue specifically impacts 85,238 2020 to 2022 Explorers with the Police Interceptor Utility Package, the company’s first-ever pursuit-rated hybrid police SUV. As of 9 July 2024, Ford has received 13 reports of under hood fires in North America resulting from engine block breaches on the cars, causing concerns that customers could be injured in an engine fire. In the event of an engine failure, oil and fuel vapor may release into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources like hot engines or exhaust components, which could result in a compartment fire. There are no reports of fire resulting from engine block breaches on non-police vehicles, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall report stated. Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries stemming from the issue. Owners are advised to park and shut off the engine if they hear unexpected engine noises, experience unexpected engine power reduction or see smoke from the engine compartment. Dealers will inspect for connecting rod bearing failure and replace the engine long block if necessary. All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge. Potential causes for the issue could be foreign object debris in the bearing, bearing material failures, crankshaft geometry concerns and lubricant quality and presence. The company will mail letters to owners explaining the safety risk around 19 August. A remedy is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2025. Once that happens, a second notice will be sent out. The ending date for reimbursement eligibility is estimated to be 5 September. Source link via The Novum Times

A shy, introverted farmer’s wife in Schoharie County, New York, Abigail has stopped going to church since the death of her young daughter Nellie. “I no longer derive comfort from the thought of a better world to come,” she says, in one of the many narrated diary entries that give Mona Fastvold’s period drama its literate, contemplative voice.
The line provides “The World to Come” with its title, which reverberates and expands in meaning as the film’s simple, year-spanning story unfolds: At first Abigail may be speaking of the afterlife, though as an exhilarating new love is denied her by the ruling patriarchy, it seems she’s looking to a liberated world far ahead of her modest existence in 1856. For Abigail finds her soulmate in another woman, fellow unhappy farm wife Tallie, and the intensely moving romance that ensues finds release in the imaginative freedom of their desires, even as fate — and men — conspire against their physical union.
As played by Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby, respectively, Abigail and Tallie are women ahead of their confined, frustrated time. But “The World to Come” doesn’t stress the point with modish anachronisms or film-pausing speeches. Instead, Fastvold’s film leans into the measured vernacular and daily routine of the mud-stained 19th-century lives it depicts, finding a satisfying kinship between the hard, gradual blossoming of its chosen landscape and the formal, subtly expressive language of writer Jim Shepard — who has gracefully adapted his own 2017 short story with fellow heartland novelist Ron Hansen (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”). The exquisite result, premiering in competition at Venice, straddles its own mountain somewhere between the peaks of Cold and Brokeback. Discerning arthouse distributors should take the climb.
For Norwegian-born director Fastvold, recently a co-writer on her partner Brady Corbet’s films “Vox Lux” and “Childhood of a Leader,” this richly textural sophomore feature represents a considerable step up from her intriguing but opaque 2014 debut “The Sleepwalker.” Like that film, however, it demonstates her fine instinct for brittle, pervasive domestic tension, and her ability to draw it out of a small, tightly wound ensemble of actors. That’s evident as early as the film’s sober introductory scenes between Abigail and her undemonstrative husband Dyer (Casey Affleck, also taking a producing credit), as they handle the strain of a severe winter freeze with nary a word of warmth spoken between them.
Structured around the dates of Abigail’s diary entries, the film opens on January 1, following an evidently not-so-festive season. It’s been some months since their daughter died of diphtheria, and wife and husband have settled into a grief-smothering routine of constant labor. In her words, she anticipates the new year “with little pride and less hope.” Cinematographer André Chemetoff supplements the mood with vividly frost-bitten tableaux of rural drudgery: Certain shots here look etched in glass. Yet when Tallie turns up at her doorstep in gray mid-February, the whole screen seems to blush slightly, tinged either by the copper explosion of her hair or by Abigail’s instant, instinctive flush of good feeling around her. A long winter, it seems, is finally thawing.
Tallie is new to the region, having moved onto the neighboring farm with her husband Finney (Christopher Abbott), who treats his wife as brusquely as Dyer does his, only with an additional hint of under-his-breath cruelty. Both lonely and limited by the constraints of milking cows, peeling potatoes and fending off talk of motherhood, the women identify in each other in a kindred spirit, but also an impulsive, reckless connection that feels entirely unfamiliar. They’re slow to call it “love” out loud, but it blooms with the spring anyway, heedless of their husbands’ growing suspicion and hostility. One would like to imagine this summer passion is forever, but “The World to Come” is no romantic fantasy; the weather, when it turns, will do so roughly.
Fastvold doesn’t resist the obviousness of her film’s seasonal metaphors, but doesn’t overwork them other: This is filmmaking as attuned to incremental shifts in light and landscape (Romania’s, in fact, gorgeously filling in for undeveloped upstate New York) as the ebb and flow of a character’s interior joy, written in a face unaccustomed to smiling. Matching the film’s variable physical and emotional temperatures throughout, a marvelous score by avant-garde British musician Daniel Blumberg is full of unexpected woodwind breezes and sharp percussive intrusions.
Kirby — who, between this and her celebrated turn in Kornél Mundruczó’s “Pieces of a Woman,” has emerged as the breakout star of this year’s Venice fest — gets to play the life-breathing force of this story, and is duly magnetic without giving in to whirling free-spirit cliché. Her Tallie may be more outspoken in her emotions than her neighbor, but she also wearily knows the score for women like her, seizing moments of freedom where she can and gritting her teeth for the rest. She duets beautifully with Waterston, who arguably has the harder task of guiding the audience through her cramped, slowly widening view of the world, and whose running voiceover handles the earthy poetics of Shepard and Hansen’s writing with aching care.
A duller film would write the story’s menfolk as uniform oppressors, but Dyer and Finney emerge as unideal husbands of a very different stripe, each increasingly wary of the other. Affleck plays the former rather poignantly, not as a callous misogynist but as a man with equally limited experience in giving and receiving affection, holding his grief close because it’s the one feeling he knows for certain. Abbott, meanwhile, is quite extraordinary: at once terrifying and pathetic as a man who all but breathes abusively, but whose petulant, Bible-bashing possessiveness over his wife reveals his own gaping weak points. He, too, can see the world to come, crushingly far away as it is.

ALEXANDRA SAVIOR - THE ARCHER
Alexandra Savior announces North American 2020 tour dates in support of forthcoming album, The Archer, due out on 30th Century Records
Portland’s mystery girl may no longer be a kept secret, but Alexandra Savior can never be fully figured out. She wears many colored hats, quite literally, as she explores a lighthouse, in her brand new video for the title track to her forthcoming album, The Archer, out now on Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records. Today, Savior also announces her 2020 North American tour dates, which will bring her mesmerizing live show to Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY in February. Tickets will be on-sale on Wednesday, October 30th.
Describing her album’s title track and latest release, Savior says:
“I wrote ‘The Archer’ on Christmas Eve as a gift for a lover. At the time, my perception was that I was writing a song about how it feels to love someone, but now when I listen back to ‘The Archer’, I realize that I was writing an observation of a psychologically unhealthy relationship, from the perspective of someone who is unconsciously aware that she is being emotionally mistreated. In 2017, I filmed the Super 8 video for ‘The Archer’ in Port Townsend, WA with artist Alexandria Saleem. The lighthouse and the grim December sky, represented to me the isolation I felt during that time in my relationship.”
Ladygunn says, “Savior has a unique voice that veers away from the cookie cutter pop that is dominating the mainstream right now.” New single, “The Archer,” showcases that standout vocality Savior is now known for, and also weaves a bittersweet story together with clever wordplay and broodingly beautiful layers of melody.
“The Archer” is the third single from Savior’s forthcoming, sophomore album, The Archer, which was produced by Sam Cohen, often known as a fan of collaboration, most recently teaming up with Kevin Morby for his Oh My God album. On working with Savior, Cohen says, “It’s really a joy to work with someone who’s got such a strong sense of melody and also such a strong sense of what she wants stylistically.”
Savior’s debut record, Belladonna of Sadness, was written in collaboration with Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and NME says, “Savior continues to build on that bold arrival and is becoming a star in her own right.” Her new album shows that not only does her voice stand alone, but that her musicality stands alone, too.
Along with Savior’s newly announced tour dates, a previously announced, special live performance will take place on November 19 at The Bootleg in Los Angeles. Fans can hear the “striking and smoky vocals [that] belong solely to Savior” (NME) and these new picturesque melodies live.
BIO: It all started with a feeling of relief. Just after midnight on New Year’s Eve, Alexandra Savior, who was six months out of a rocky relationship and appreciating her independence, sat down and wrote the song that would become “Crying All the Time.” The melodic, heart-rending ballad, she says, “is about how it feels to be in a relationship with a person who’s disappointed in you,” but it’s also a clarion call announcing the arrival of her sophomore album, The Archer, out DATETK. The dreamy, melancholy song, the first single from The Archer, feels at once classic and contemporary; it’s a torch song for a new generation.
“There’s depression and there’s heartbreak,” Savior says of the album’s themes, which play out over 10 haunting tracks. “But each song represents a different emotional state. I tried to project some sort of strength; I wrote during a time when I was a young woman growing into my identity and developing my confidence, and I hope that comes through.”
Her message gets across loud and clear. Tracks like “Crying All the Time” and “Saving Grace” are big songs—ambitious and atmospheric—that put Savior’s ethereal voice and sharp writing on display. “It came from a place of anger,” she says of “Saving Grace,” the album’s writhing second single. “I had gone through a breakup and people kept telling me it was a saving grace, and I found it ironic because I was so heartbroken.” In some of the songs, Savior’s emotions unfold like thunderstorms and envelop everything going on around them. Other numbers, like “Soft Currents,” feel quiet and more intimate, like a whispered secret nobody was meant to hear.
And while Savior shoulders the responsibility for the lion’s share of her output herself, writing her own songs, creating the artwork for her album’s cover, and even filming her own videos, The Archer was created with an indispensable set of collaborators who helped harness her vision. Its Savior’s first release on 30th Century Records, the label run by her friend and collaborator Danger Mouse, and was produced by Sam Cohen, who’s best known for his work with artists like Kevin Morby and Benjamin Booker. “It’s really a joy to work with someone who’s got such a strong sense of melody and of what she wants stylistically,” Cohen says. “It was amazing to go into her world of 1960s B-movie love stories; Alexandra had a vision that really spoke to me.”
Of course, he wasn’t the first to appreciate her talent. The Oregon native first gained industry attention in 2012 when she posted a cover of Angus Stone’s “Big Jet Plane” on YouTube. The playful, haunting performance landed her a legion of influential fans—she ended up songwriting with Linda Perry, who compared her to Fiona Apple—and put her on the road toward releasing her debut album, 2017’s Belladonna of Sadness, which was written in tandem with the Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner and produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford. Pitchfork praised the album, saying, “Savior has a penchant for clever wordplay and a voice that can hypnotize, terrorize, or both,” and the Guardian swooned for Savior’s “preternatural self-possession” and “crystalline, intimate voice.
“Still, with The Archer,” Savior says, “I felt like I needed to establish my own voice and show my independence again.” A listen to the new album will prove that she’s done that, and then some. It’s not only the establishment of a voice, but a showcase for an extraordinary talent at the peak of her power. She’s already at work writing songs for what will be her next release.

Reaching Watchtowers will reveal large parts of the map, giving you the location of Contracts, hidden upgrades, and even vehicles. Also, more of the map is explored, the easier it will be to plan your routes! Tip 2: Buy, sell, upgrade, and customize your trucks in the Garage The rewards from Contracts and Activities can be spent in your Garage. Here, you can purchase new vehicles to expand your lineup, upgrade their parts, and customize them visually. Your favorite vehicles can be improved to tackle tougher terrain with bigger engines, new wheels, or even a snorkel for braving river rapids. You’re going to need all the power you can get to tackle some of the more challenging objectives! Tip 3: Use the Truck Storage to send your best vehicles across the world The Truck Storage can bring your vehicles to other maps and regions, perfect if you want to bring your preferred truck on every journey you go on. Tip 4: Plan your journey around your Fuel Certain late-game Contracts span multiple maps so preparing yourself for the long-haul is important. A fuel trailer makes you more autonomous, but if you can’t afford the price of the trailer or your truck isn’t strong enough to carry it, you will need to rely on fuel stations. Be sure the route you’ve got in mind has plenty of fuel available. Tip 5: Activate All-Wheel Drive and Differential Lock when necessary All-Wheel Drive gives power to every single wheel on your vehicle, it is especially effective when trying to overcome slopes. This raises your fuel consumption, so use it sparingly. Remember to turn it off when the terrain is easier to navigate! Cars normally have their differentials unlocked, which allows each wheel to rotate at different speeds for safe turning at high speeds. Differential Lock forces two wheels that share the same axel to turn in unison, heavily increasing vehicle traction. Make sure to know when to use both, so you don’t end up crashing on the curb! Tip 6: Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast If you’re stuck, don’t panic! Flooring the accelerator will likely leave you in a more precarious situation because spinning your tires will just dig you deeper into the mud or snow. Set your gearbox to a lower level and try to gently nudge yourself free. Slower tire spins with careful steering wheel control can get you more traction and you’ll be out of there in no time. Tip 7: Increase your Driver Rank Certain Contracts may be too tough for you to handle early, so don’t be afraid to leave them for later. Raising your Driver Rank will grant access to more vehicles and upgrades, netting you with more tools to make your job easier. Tip 8: Use your Winch! #snowrunner #snowrunnergameplay #offroad
