The King: Eternal Monarch Catches Plenty of Hate Online Why That Is, And Why You Should Ignore It Part I
(to be posted in several parts, spoilers possible, but will be limited)
Subjects of the Kingdom, Citizens of the Republic, and (as always) Gentle Readers:
If you’ve spent any amount of time searching The King: Eternal Monarch, Lee Min Ho, Kim Go Eun, or various other adjacent topics online since 2020, the fact that Kdrama The King: Eternal Monarch is more likely to be associated with negative coverage rather than positive, is far from news to you.
Just the other day, @dumbassdictionarysds popped into my DMs and asked if I might have a post in me to explain what I thought the roots of this heated rejection of the show might be.
“I was thinking of making a video on TKEM and its criticisms and why people didn't like it and why I liked it,” they wrote, “I would really appreciate if you could give some insight into what common criticisms you saw and what you thought of them.”
It should come as no surprise at this point that, as someone showed up wanting to talk about--and hear about--TKEM that my responding was an absolute no-brainer, and a welcome moment of elation.
As we dive in, let me give two (sorta three) shout-outs to places I’ve read meta for TKEM, whose thoughts on the matter and the show have no doubt helped shaped my own opinions and understanding of it: bitchesoverdramas.com and thefangirlverdict.com, with a nod to TKEM’s Wikipedia page as well. For the record (because it seems it might prove germane here) I am neither Korean nor have I/do I live in Korea (nor the Kingdom of Corea, for that matter).
Okay. Many people (perhaps most people?—at least online fan people) really, really have issues with TKEM. Writer Kim Eun Sook’s shows, while generally well received by fandom and critics, are no strangers to occasional controversy-- particularly of her two most recent dramas available through Netflix, Mr. Sunshine and The King: Eternal Monarch.
Research seems to show that KES tends toward being something of a polarizing figure in fandom. Those that love her don’t just love her a little, but will die on this hill, and those who dislike what she does can really, really, REALLY, not stand it (and are also ready to die on that hill).
That’s a lot of people camped out, ready to die on their respective hills. For every person that thinks Goblin is the greatest kdrama ever filmed, there is a person ready and waiting to dismember Heirs’ Kim Tan.
No one should be surprised that KES’ new show would prove polarizing.
So let’s get down to business. Why all the hate?
Expectations Deliberately and Consistently Subverted
Was this Lee Min Ho’s Regarding Henry-moment?
WRT TKEM, let’s start with the elephant/top star in the room: stratospheric Hallyu star Lee Min Ho’s return to viewers’ screens following his two year absence due to mandatory military service (and removal from public life).
There is a weight added, then, to fans’ expectations for the show. It’s not just LMH’s next project, it becomes his MOST IMPORTANT project, his ONLY new project. (Since 2016′s The Legend of the Blue Sea, I believe).
Don’t ask me to react to this photo. I’ve been processing its existence for months now, no conclusions to share yet in sight.
These are fans of Boys Over Flowers’ Goo Joon Pyo, of Heirs’ (also by KES) Kim Tan. These are die-hard viewers who know how they like to consume their LMH on-screen. But KES (and LMH, b/c he’s actually spoken directly to this) aren’t interested in handing out on-brand LMH anymore. Therefore, his Corean King/Emperor Lee Gon is much more in line with the mature, controlled, focused and kind Joseon magistrate Dam Ryeong (from The Legend of the Blue Sea) than the out-of-touch disaster boy chaebols like GJP and KT that rocketed him to global stardom and notoriety.
For instance, TKEM has its hero Lee Gon (LMH) experiencing an epiphany moment of actually understanding and feeling deep empathy for what the female lead is going through—an understanding and an emotion that that utterly evades both GJP and KT (and let’s face it, the majority of kdrama male leads) throughout their entire series.
Do people perhaps hate on LMH in TKEM just as they hated Harrison Ford’s attempt in Regarding Henry to choose projects that artistically interested and challenged him but were found NOT to interest movie goers that rather wanted to see (what they expected from) “a Harrison Ford film”? Is it that viewers wanted to watch (what they expected from) a LMH kdrama?
Had the character of Lee Gon been written and performed as more of a GJP-role would the show’s reception have been more robust and less controversial?
Thankfully, for this viewer, we’ll never have to know.
You cannot truly address LMH’s return to screens without bringing up TKEM episode one, and the way the writing chose to handle what surely had been incredibly hyped in Korean media (LMH’s return).
Does LMH storm the screen in the first moments, triumphant? Is his face the first thing we see? Not even close. The show begins in a muddle for viewers, not sure where we are or what’s going on. And then it…doesn’t do much to clear that up. [more on that in a later section]
Essentially, the show begins in a police interrogation room, during a scene that actually takes place in the penultimate episode of the show. It then proceeds to a seminal event that happened 25 years BEFORE the main timeframe the show operates in.
Neither of these things involve a visible LMH. IN FACT, it is more than 37 minutes into the first episode before he’s acting on-screen. [Yes, I know he’s shown in a 10 second lightning flash right before the show’s 4 minute mark—but that’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, and barely even counts as an amuse-bouche.]
When we do see LMH as the grown Lee Gon (a child actor having portrayed him for the prior 37 minutes), if a viewer is holding entitled golden boys GJP and KT in their mind, it changes their potential reading of Lee Gon’s entire introduction to us as king. The humorous sniping between him and Court Lady Noh over getting married and producing an heir might take on a (misinterpreted) nasty edge, if one is predisposed to expect LMH to portray an temper-tantrum-throwing male character of great wealth whose character arc is to redeem him from his bratty nature through finding the love of an average good woman [Hint: that’s not at all what’s going on here.]--if that’s what a viewer showed up for, they’re going to have those expectations disappointed. And if they can’t shed them, they are going to hate this show.

April 15, 2022 (Friday)Early in the morning of April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln breathed his last. The night before, he and his wife had gone to see a play—a comedy. One of the last men to talk to him before he left for the theater said it seemed the cares of the previous four years were melting away. The Confederacy was all but defeated, and the nation seemed to be on its way to a prosperous, inclusive new future.
The bullet that killed Lincoln had been delivered by John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor poisoned by the belief that Lincoln’s use of the federal government to end human enslavement as a central part of the nation’s economy was tyranny.
Since the 1830s, southern Democratic leaders had gotten around the sticky problem of the Declaration of Independence, with its insistence that “all men are created equal,” by insisting that democracy simply meant that men could elect their leaders at the state level. If voters chose to do unpopular things—like take Indigenous lands, enslave their Black neighbors, or impose taxes on Mexicans and Chinese and not on white men—that was their prerogative. Even if the vast majority of the U.S. population opposed those state laws, there was nothing the federal government could do to change them.
The only thing the national government could do was to protect property, and that power was expansive: in 1859, enslavers would demand that the government take the extraordinary step of enforcing enslavement in the western territories. But, they insisted, the government had no power to do anything else. It could do nothing that the Framers had not enumerated in the Constitution, even if the vast majority of Americans wanted it to establish colleges for poor men, for example, or lay a road across the Cumberland Gap for western migrants, or dredge the harbors where trading schooners kept commerce flowing.
To men like Lincoln, the men who organized the Republican Party, this simply made no sense. By its very nature, such an argument concentrated such wealth and power in a few men that the Republicans talked constantly of “oligarchy.”
The point of a democratic government, they believed, was to answer the will of the majority of voters in the whole country. During the Civil War, the Republicans used the government to provide homesteads for settlers, create public colleges, distribute seeds (no small thing in an era when seeds were handed down in families and poor men often had no access to such legacies), charter a national railroad, invent national taxation, and—finally—end systemic human enslavement.
This system was wildly popular, but those determined to retain control of their states insisted it was tyranny. No longer able to manipulate the political system in their favor, they turned to violence. “Sic semper tyrannis!”-- thus always to tyrants-- Booth yelled from the stage at Ford’s Theater, after pulling the trigger.
The old Democratic argument for state’s rights has reemerged in the present-day Republican Party, and it has taken on many of the same contours as it had in the 1850s. Adherents are operating in a false reality, believing that their vision of the nation is the only correct one, and that they must impose their will on the rest of us, no matter what we want. As Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) tweeted on October 8, 2020, “Democracy isn’t the objective; liberty, peace, and prospe[r]ity are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that.”
That fear of democracy has brought us to the edge of losing our government. In an exclusive story today by Ryan Nobles, Annie Grayer, Zachary Cohen, and Jamie Gangel, CNN published 100 text messages between Senator Lee, Representative Chip Roy of Texas, and Trump’s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. The messages were obtained by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol.
They show elected members of our government eager to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 election in which a national majority of 7 million people had chosen Democrat Joe Biden as president.
On November 7, acting on the false narrative the Trump administration had established months before that the election would be marked by fraud, Lee was one of a number of right-wing lawmakers and leaders who offered to Trump their "unequivocal support for you to exhaust every legal and constitutional remedy at your disposal to restore Americans faith in our elections." On November 9, Lee told Meadows he was working to bring senators around to the idea of challenging the election. Roy wrote that they needed evidence of fraud: “We need ammo. We need fraud examples. We need it this weekend."
Gradually, though, Lee and Roy became concerned that the administration was long on accusations and short on evidence. On November 19, Trump’s public legal team—Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Jenna Ellis—gave a press conference that was full of wild accusations, all of which were false, that might well have been designed simply to whip up Trump’s base for later attacks on the counting of electoral votes. (Trump’s team lost more than 60 lawsuits over the election, and when Dominion Voting Systems sued Powell for $1.3 billion over her accusations that their software flipped votes, her legal team argued that “reasonable people would not accept such statements as fact.”)
In the wake of the conference, Lee worried that “the potential defamation liability for the president is significant here. For the campaign and the president personally. Unless Powell can back up everything she said, which I kind of doubt she can.” He believed the press conference was damaging enough that the president “should probably disassociate himself and refute any claims that can't be substantiated.” On November 22, he begged Meadows: “Please tell me what I should be saying.” Roy wrote: “If we don't get logic and reason in this before 11/30—the GOP conference will bolt (all except the most hard core Trump guys).”
Lee and Roy then turned to lawyer John Eastman’s plan to have states appoint “alternative slates of electors” in place of the legitimate, certified ones. By January 3, Lee specified that those new slates must be named “pursuant to state law,” and started calling state legislators. In the end, Lee and Roy came to see that the fight to keep Trump in power was unconstitutional. On December 31, Roy wrote: “The President should call everyone off. It's the only path. If we substitute the will of states through electors with a vote by Congress every 4 years...we have destroyed the electoral college... Respectfully.” On January 1, he added: “If POTUS allows this to occur...we're driving a stake in the heart of the federal republic….”
On January 4, Roy had abandoned the attack on the federal government, but other Republicans persisted. Roy texted: “I am truly sorry I am in a different spot then you and our brothers re: Wednesday. But I will defend all.” On January 6, during the riot, he texted: “This is a sh*tshow…. Fix this now.” “We are,” Meadows texted. Later that night, 8 senators and 139 representatives nonetheless voted to challenge certified state electoral votes electing Biden.
Since January 6, the Republican Party has shifted its focus to the states to undermine the federal government. Nineteen states have changed their election laws to enable Republicans to win their states regardless of the will of the voters, sending Republican electors to put a Republican president in place.
Encouraged by the Supreme Court’s “originalist” majority, which denies the ability of the federal government to protect civil rights in the states, Florida, Mississippi, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas have all overridden the constitutional right to abortion, and Republican lawmakers have indicated they are gunning for birth control and interracial marriage as well.
Dramatically, in the last week. Texas governor Greg Abbott has effectively shut down international trade across the U.S.-Mexico border, explicitly asserting state power over national power and thus driving prices up all across the country.
One hundred and fifty-seven years ago today, Lincoln’s secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, stood heartbroken by the bedside of the man who had asserted the power of the federal government over the states and said, “Now he belongs to the ages.”

Trudeau’s emergency powers upheld in Canada’s House amid worries ‘Freedom Convoy’ could return (Washington Post) In a 185-to-151 vote Monday, Canada’s House of Commons affirmed the use of special emergency powers invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to quell weeks-long blockades by self-styled “Freedom Convoy” protesters. Ottawa was largely cleared this past weekend of the protests that clogged the capital’s streets and frayed residents’ nerves, and major U.S.-Canada trade routes have been restored. But speaking to reporters ahead of the vote, Trudeau said the state of emergency he declared last week is not over because there continue to be “real concerns” over new demonstrations cropping up. Monday’s vote was largely divided along party lines. Provincial leaders were also split over Trudeau’s emergency powers: Doug Ford, premier of Ontario, supported the invocation, while Alberta’s leader, Jason Kenney, promised to challenge the federal government in court. The 34-year-old law, which was put to use for the first time last week, gives the Canadian government broad powers and tools to respond to national emergencies, authorizing federal authorities “to intrude into areas that would normally be under provincial jurisdiction during an emergency,” one legal expert explained.
Big Tech Makes a Big Bet: Offices Are Still the Future (NYT) Early in the pandemic, when shops along Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe closed their doors and students at nearby Arizona State University were asked to go home, the roar of construction continued to fill the air. Now, gleaming in the sunlight and stuffed with amenities, towering glass office buildings have sprouted up all over the Phoenix metropolitan area. Arizonans are about to have new next-door neighbors. And they include some of the technology industry’s biggest names. DoorDash, the food delivery company, moved into a new building on the edge of a Tempe reservoir in the summer of 2020. Robinhood, the financial trading platform, rented out a floor in an office nearby. On a February morning, construction workers were putting the finishing touches on a 17-story Tempe office building expected to add 550 Amazon workers to the 5,000 already in the area. The frenetic activity in the Phoenix suburbs is one of the most visible signs of a nationwide recovery in commercial office real estate fueled by the tech industry, which has enjoyed unchecked growth and soaring profits as the pandemic has forced more people to shop, work and socialize online. Big tech companies like Meta and Google were among the first to allow some employees to work from home permanently, but they have simultaneously been spending billions of dollars expanding their office spaces. But companies, real estate analysts and workplace experts said several factors were propelling the trend, including a hiring boom, a race to attract and retain top talent and a sense that offices will play a key role in the future of work. If Joe Biden Doesn’t Change Course, This Will Be His Worst Failure (NYT/Opinion) Ninety-five percent of Afghans don’t have enough to eat. Nearly nine million are at risk of starvation. The U.N.’s emergency aid request, at more than $5 billion, is the largest it has ever made for a single country. “The current humanitarian crisis could kill far more Afghans than the past 20 years of war,” David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee, wrote recently. And we bear much of the blame. We have turned a crisis into a catastrophe. The drought in Afghanistan is the worst in decades. The Taliban is a brutal regime that has no idea how to manage an economy, and in many ways is barely trying. “Remember, the Emirate had not promised you the provision of food,” Mullah Muhammad Hassan, the head of the Taliban regime, said. “The Emirate has kept its promises. It is God who has promised his creatures the provision of food.” But neither drought nor Taliban mismanagement fully explain the horror unfolding in Afghanistan. “The long and short of it is Western economic restrictions are creating an economic crisis in the country which is driving tens of millions Afghans into starvation,” Graeme Smith, an Afghanistan expert at the International Crisis Group, told me. We froze more than $9 billion that belonged to the Afghan government—the vast majority of its foreign reserves. Sanctions that had long applied to the Taliban as a terrorist group suddenly applied to the government of Afghanistan, and few companies or countries dared violate them. “If state collapse was the object of policy, it could hardly be better designed,” Miliband told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in unusually blunt testimony.
First Peruvian ex-president on trial for Odebrecht scandal (AP) A Peruvian judge started a trial Monday for corruption charges against former President Ollanta Humala and his wife, both accused of money laundering in a scandal involving Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht that has stained the highest political leaders in this South American country over the last two decades. Humala is the first former leader of Peru standing trial in Latin America’s biggest graft scandal, although three other ex-presidents have been involved in the case. Prosecutors accused Humala and his wife of receiving over $3 million from Odebrecht for his presidential campaigns in 2006 and 2011. Both denied any wrongdoing. Odebrecht admitted in a U.S. Justice Department plea agreement to paying $800 million in bribes to high-ranking officials around the region in exchange for lucrative public works contracts.
How Europeans Are Responding to Exorbitant Gas and Power Bills (NYT) A German retiree facing sky-high energy bills is turning to a wood-burning stove. The owner of a dry cleaning business in Spain adjusted her employees’ work shifts to cut electric bills and installed solar panels. A mayor in France said he ordered a hiring freeze because rising electrical bills threaten a financial “catastrophe.” Europeans have long paid some of the world’s highest prices for energy, but no one can remember a winter like this one. Lives and livelihoods across the continent are being upended by a series of factors, including pandemic-induced supply shortages and now geopolitical tensions that are driving some energy prices up fivefold. The flow of gas could be interrupted now that the Kremlin has ordered Russian troops into separatist territories of Ukraine. Ukraine: Russian incursion, US sanctions (Bloomberg) After months of Kremlin denials that tens of thousands of troops massed on Ukraine’s borders telegraphed an intent to invade, U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday condemned Russia for doing just that. In a televised address, Biden announced sanctions over the decision by Vladimir Putin to send more troops into two so-called separatist republics inside Ukraine, and said the move sets the stage for a larger-scale invasion. Kremlin forces already occupy Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. In coordination with European allies and others, the U.S. said it’s implementing a first round of sanctions, effectively cutting Moscow off from Western financing. Biden added he would announce other targeted sanctions against Russian oligarchs and their families in the coming days. Germany halted the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, one of Putin’s biggest priorities, and the U.K. announced additional sanctions targeting banks.
South Koreans overwhelmingly want nuclear weapons to confront China and North Korea, poll finds (Washington Post) There has long been a desire among South Koreans for domestic nuclear weapons capability, but a poll shows that in the face of North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and an assertive China, that view has ballooned to more than 70 percent of the population—most of whom want to go nuclear even when the potential drawbacks are explained. The poll, released Tuesday by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, found robust support for nuclear weapons in South Korea: South Koreans want nuclear weapons even when they feel confident about the country’s alliance with the United States and about the strength of their own military.
In an Uneven Fight With China, a Tiny Country’s Brand Becomes Toxic (NYT) A family-owned semiconductor company in Lithuania sold nothing to China, so it did not worry much last year when Beijing, furious at the Baltic nation for cozying up to Taiwan, began blocking imports of milk products, peat and anything else it could find with a “Made in Lithuania” label. Closing the door on Lithuanian exports, however, was just the start. Today, said Kristijonas Vizbaras, a founder of the successful chip maker Brolis Group, anything with a “Lithuanian smell,” no matter how faint—say, a German car with a small Lithuanian-made component—risks getting blocked by China. “Unfortunately, Lithuania has become a toxic label,” he said, lamenting that China’s economic power has given it irresistible leverage over global supply chains—and as a result, the ability to strike wherever these chains intersect with his tiny Baltic country or any other nation that causes offense to Beijing. The lopsided fight between Lithuania, with a population of under three million, and China started last summer over a representative office that Taiwan, a thriving democracy that Beijing claims as Chinese territory, was opening in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. That feud has now expanded. The German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce warned Lithuania in December that its members working in high-tech sectors had been hit by the “Chinese-Lithuanian trade blockage in an existential way.” The European Union in January filed a complaint against China with the World Trade Organization, calling its actions against Lithuania “illegal and discriminatory,” but has otherwise largely left one of its smallest and weakest members to fend for itself. While publicly pledging solidarity with Lithuania, Josep Borrell, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, has privately urged it to appease Beijing by having the office represent “Taipei” instead of Taiwan.
Hong Kong orders mandatory COVID-19 tests for all residents (AP) Hong Kong will test its entire population for COVID-19 in March, the city’s leader said Tuesday, as the city grapples with its worst outbreak driven by the omicron variant. Hong Kong has reported about 5,000 new daily infections since Feb. 15, with the number threatening to overwhelm its healthcare system. Since the surge began at the beginning of the year, the city has recorded nearly 54,000 cases and 145 deaths. The order for citywide testing comes after mainland Chinese authorities dispatched health workers and medical resources last week to help contain the outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.
Dubai airport is busiest for global travel (AP) Dubai’s main airport said Tuesday it has retained its top place as the world’s busiest for international travel with around 29 million passengers shuttling through the global gateway last year. The 2021 passenger figures are encouraging for the tourism-driven economy of Dubai, regarded as a critical link between East and West. The numbers are sign that international travel has picked up somewhat since the coronavirus pandemic spawned unprecedented global lockdowns and border closures in 2020. Last year’s figure represents a 12% increase in traffic at Dubai International Airport compared to 2020. Dubai is currently hosting the six-month-long World’s Fair, which was delayed by a year due to the pandemic. Expo 2020, which opened in October and runs until the end of March, has attracted millions of visitors as well as heads of state, royalty and celebrities, helping to further cement Dubai’s reputation as a global destination.

The same candidates tend to show up year after year. Not just President running for re-election, but Vice Presidents running for the top slot themselves, incumbents or candidates, successful or not; Richard Nixon (1952, 1956, 1960, 1968), Hubert Humphrey (1964, 1968), Walter Mondale (1976, 1980), Bob Dole (1976, 1996), Al Gore (1992, 1996, 2000)
I would expect John Edwards (D-2004) to try and make a comeback, though he was only a one term senator from North Carolina, so that’s looking increasingly unlikely. The state swung for Obama in 2008, but hasn’t voted blue since (except for governor, but he has no power because the Republicans control the state legislature)
Paul Ryan (R-2012) will be back for sure; he retired from the House in part over of disagreements with Trump, but one doesn’t just give up being Speaker and slink away into obscurity (just look at Newt Gingrich, he refuses to shut up or die), so I think Ryan is just biding his time and hoping the whole Trump thing blows over in the next decade. If the party shifts away from Trump, he might offer himself as a slightly more moderate (“moderate*”) alternative.
Or maybe Sarah Palin (R-2008) will try and reclaim the presidency for herself; she’s a hardcore right wing nutjob, she was a Bush supporter AND a Trump supporter, and she’s still relatively young, so I could see her stepping back into the spotlight to try and “being the country back” to the traditionalism of the early 2000s. Nostalgia is cyclical, so I figure around 2028 or 2032 people will start looking back fondly on the Clinton and Bush years (Clinton more so than Bush, what with 9/11 and the wars and such)
Tim Kaine isn’t even one of the famous senators; there are some senators that everybody knows, even if they’re not from your state, like Chuck Schumer, Joe Manchin, Lindsey Graham, Bitch McConnell, big names with big reputations. Tim Kaine is a nobody, just a bland and inoffensive white dude Clinton picked to be as uncontroversial as possible (she couldn’t pick a woman or a black person because then the ticket would have been “too diverse”). He’s not the future of the Democratic party, but I could see him trying to become part of the Senate leadership. Maybe the whip (vice leader), I don’t think he has what it takes to be leader outright.
I don’t think Mitt Romney (R-2012) will run for president again; that ship has sailed. Moderate Republicans are critically endangered, extinct in the wild, with single specimens in captivity (in Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maryland). After back-to-back losses in 2008 and 2012, I don’t think Republicans will run a moderate candidate ever again. Romney could maybe just maybe become the whip if he so desired, he’s a big enough name with support enough to become their presidential nominee, though he’ll never be the leader; McConnell was their golden goose, he gave hem exactly what they wanted and changed the game to give them an advantage even in minority. They will only ever elect hardliners like him from now on. Romney is too soft; he cares too much about the other side (he’s not liberal by any stretch of the imagination, he’s a Mormon for Brigham’s sake, but he voted to impeach Trump twice which means he may as well be a liberal in the eyes of the public)
Mike Pence has committed political suicide. Democrats hate him for his homophobia, sexism, racism, classism, and weird relationship with his wife who he calls “mother.” Republicans hate him because he didn’t break the law to re-elect Trump. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. He’s ultraconservative and super religious, so under normal circumstances he’d be a shoo-in for the nomination, but after breaking with Trump in January he’s dead in the water (he didn’t even really break away, there was literally nothing legal he could do; if he had tried anything it would have been struck down by the courts). And besides that, Pence is boring as hell. He’s milquetoast, he’s a saltine cracker without the salt because it’s too spicy, he orders plain hamburgers with ketchup on the side, all his steaks are cooked well done, he gets a boner when he sees a woman’s ankle and has to self-flagellate for penance, he sends back water if it has too much ice because it makes his teeth hurt. He’s the sacrificial lamb they’d nominate specifically to lose so they can save a stronger candidate for later when there’s no incumbent.
Kamala Harris is basically president-in-waiting (or rather nominee-in-waiting; who knows if she can actually win?) Biden ran on the unspoken promise that he would step down in 2024, making her the front runner, but he has recently walked this back and says he plans on running for a second term himself, pushing Kamala back until 2028 at least. She has good PR and has convinced half the country that she’s a progressive instead of a cop, so if she runs she’ll definitely have an edge over Democratic challengers. The media picks the nominee, and in 24 or 28 they’ll pick her for sure.
It’s becoming increasingly harder for people to stay relevant over multiple decades. I can’t imagine any 2004 candidates running in 2024, but Bob Dole managed to get on as Ford’s #2 and come back as #1 himself twenty years later (he lost both times, but still). Richard Nixon beat the odds and actually got elected in 68 after losing the presidency in 60 and the governorship in 62; he was pretty much coasting on Eisenhower’s legacy, selling himself as the anti-Goldwater, who lost in 64 to LBJ in a landslide.
Trump is acting like he’s going to run again, but whether or not he’ll fully commit is up in the air. On the one hand, his least insane niece says that he doesn’t want to put himself in a position where he could lose again, his ego couldn’t take it, he’s so embarrassed he can’t even admit it happened the first time. On the other hand, he’s too proud to accept defeat and just let some other candidate take his spot as leader of the Republican Party; the Republicans haven’t had a leader since Eisenhower, every other president has disappeared after leaving office.

Now Trump wants to stick around, even though he’s older than Reagan and FAR less healthy. He’ll probably be dead in 15 years anyway; no way he reaches 90. His mind may already be going, but unlike Reagan he isn’t self aware enough to know it, so he might try to stay in the spotlight even after the dementia sets in. Wo knows?
What his niece says, and what I think is most likely to happen, is that he will pretend like he’s running in order to scam donors out of millions of dollars to pay his exorbitant legal fees, but then bow out of the race before the primaries. Whichever candidate he personally endorses will become the nominee and go up against Biden. Biden will win the popular vote, but I don’t know if he’ll win the electoral college; if this happens for the third time in a quarter century, I expect nothing less than chaos in the streets, perhaps even civil war (well, I expected civil war after 2020, and we’re still standing, so again, who knows?). All I know is that congressional Democrats will throw a hissy fit but do nothing to stop the Republicans from sneaking their way into office without a mandate AGAIN.
The last Republican to legitimately win the presidency was George Bush Sr in 1988. Jr lost to Gore, and only got re-elected in 2004 because he invaded Iraq the year prior. Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 elections, including the last 4 in a row. There are more Democrats and left-leaning independents than Republicans and right-leaners. If the Republicans lose-but-win AGAIN, I don’t think the county could take it; there would be phony calls for secession on TV and legitimate whispers behind the scenes, there would be lawsuits, there would be an even bigger assault on the Capitol than January 6, people would riot, the National Guard would attack brown people with impunity while peacefully corralling the white ones with shields and loudspeakers.
There hasn’t been an assassination since 1963, and no assassination attempt resulting in injury since 1981. Someone threw a grenade at Bush Jr in 2005, but they wrapped a handkerchief around it so the lever didn’t release. I think multiple politicians on both sides of the aisle might be targeted in the event of another electoral college screw up.
Trump could face jail time for his tax crimes, though given his high profile I think he’d get off with a slap on the wrist. He has never faced consequences before, so why would they start now?

Why The Godfather Part III has been unfairly demonized

The final part of the Godfather trilogy is considered such an artistic disaster that you'd think Francis Ford Coppola had forgotten how to make a film in the 16 years that followed The Godfather Part II (1974). Part III's most famous dialogue – Al Pacino as the aging Mafia don Michael Corleone snarls, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" – has become an easy laugh line.
But 30 years after its release, it is time to rescue Godfather III from its terrible reputation. Pacino's eloquent, fiery, knowing central performance is supported by several bravura set pieces that are mini-masterpieces in themselves. With deliberate echoes of the earlier Godfather films, there is singing and dancing at a family party, a bold murder during the San Gennaro street festival, a tragedy on the steps of an opera house in Sicily.
In the film’s confusing main plot, Michael gets tangled up in dealing with the Vatican
Hindsight alone would tell us how seriously the film has been undervalued, even without Coppola's newly restored, re-edited and renamed version. It now has the title Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. Calling it a coda emphasises its connection to the earlier instalments, and even hints at its lesser stature. And the word 'death' signals its dark inevitability, although the meaning of that word is slipperier than it first appears.
Twelve minutes shorter, it rearranges some key episodes, eliminates a few minor scenes and trims a line here or there. But until its altered ending, it is fundamentally the same film, better in parts than as a whole. It is too flawed to come close to the accomplishments of The Godfather (1972) or its sequel, both among the most towering and influential films of the 20th Century. They have penetrated the culture, from their language ("I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse") to their quintessentially American story of immigration and upward mobility. But the new version clarifies Coppola's epic vision, revealing how much the Corleone story was always Michael's, a deeply moral saga of guilt and redemption. He just happened to be a mob boss.
For me the tragedy of The Godfather, which is the tragedy of America, is about Michael Corleone – Francis Ford Coppola
Coppola was always lucid about the trilogy's vision, even when others were confused. "For me the tragedy of The Godfather, which is the tragedy of America, is about Michael Corleone," he says in the extras on a DVD set of the three films released in 2001. He wanted The Death of Michael Corleone to be the title back in 1990, but Paramount, the studio releasing it, did not. The film's initial reception was measured disappointment, not dismissal or horror as we now assume. Roger Ebert actually loved it. Pauline Kael did not love or hate it, but offered the withering, condescending assessment. "I don't think it's going to be a public humiliation." Expectations were high because of the legacy of the earlier films, yet low because Part III came with a whiff of desperation and of selling out. Coppola had resisted making another Godfather for years, then wrote the screenplay (with Mario Puzo) and edited it in a rush to meet its Christmas Day release. It even got seven Oscar nominations, including best picture and director. It is an odd example of a movie whose reputation has declined over the decades.
Why the film is misunderstood
Then and now, the series has largely been misunderstood. Crime movies like Coppola's and Martin Scorsese's are so seductive that audiences have embraced them for apparently glamorising the love of raw power and the concept of honour among thieves. Beneath the Mafia-friendly surface, though, they are built on ethical themes their more hot-headed characters don't grasp. The Godfather Coda tells us that crime really doesn't pay when you're ready to search your soul. The young Michael struggles with the idea of killing and crime in the first Godfather. The consequences of his decision are central to Part III, which takes place in 1979, 20 years after the events of Godfather II. Michael, a billionaire living in New York, has made his businesses legitimate and is left to grapple with his guilt for so many crimes, especially ordering the murder of his brother Fredo, who betrayed him.
The film still has problems that no amount of editing can change. In a needlessly confusing main plot, Michael tries to take over a European conglomerate called International Immobiliare. By buying the Vatican's shares, he'll be bailing out the corrupt Vatican bank. The family part of the story revolves around Michael's nephew, Vincent Mancini, the illegitimate son of his brother Sonny. Andy Garcia is as good a Vincent as you could hope for, handsome, swaggering, rough around the edges, dynamic on screen. But his character never makes much sense. Vincent has his father's explosive temper and appetite for violence, but somehow goes from a not-so-bright thug to a shrewd, controlled crime strategist in a matter of months. His change is far from the engrossing, methodical character trajectory that takes the young Michael from idealist to murderer in the first Godfather.
And the film's most severely criticised element is no better than anyone remembers. Winona Ryder, who had been set to play Michael's daughter, Mary, dropped out weeks before filming started and was replaced with unabashed nepotism by Coppola's teenaged daughter, Sofia. Today, we know Sofia Coppola as a brilliant director, but it's easy to see why her amateurish performance made her another target of Godfather III jokes, particularly for the unintentionally awkward and passionless romance between Mary and her cousin Vincent. Coppola actually snipped a couple of Sofia's lines in the new version.
He makes a major change at the start of the re-edited film, eliminating the lovely original beginning. It set an elegiac tone by showing images of the abandoned family house in Lake Tahoe from Part II, and includes a flashback to Fredo's death, while Nino Rota's familiar soundtrack music evokes the past. The new version begins with a duplicitous archbishop soliciting Michael's help for the Vatican, a scene originally placed later in the film. The change highlights the finance plot without making it any clearer.
The exhilarating start
But the film soon picks up with its true, exhilarating beginning. Several generations of Corleones, along with friends and business associates, gather at a party celebrating Michael. His sister, Connie, sings an Italian song, while shady-looking visitors pay homage to Michael in his office. He now has bristly grey hair and a lined face, and controls his family and business with authoritarian power. The extravagant 30-minute sequence echoes Connie's wedding at the start of The Godfather, and the First Communion party in Lake Tahoe that began Godfather II. Michael's office even has the same light slanting through the blinds that we saw in his father's office in the first Godfather, when Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone received visitors. Throughout, these call backs to the previous films add resonance while trenchantly revealing how things have changed. Michael is burdened by conscience in a way Vito never was. "I don't apologise," Vito tells Michael near the end of The Godfather, justifying his brutality because he was trying to save his family. Godfather III is all about Michael's need to atone.
Al Pacino's performance may have become an object of derision, but he knows what he's doing.
The party scene flows easily as it brings every character up to date. Diane Keaton is as deft as ever as Michael's ex-wife Kay, who pleads with him to allow their son, Tony, to pursue a career as an opera singer. Kay can be chilling. "Tony knows that you killed Fredo," she warns Michael. Yet she has never got over him, as we see in a later scene when they have a tearful tête-à-tête in Sicily, a scene Pacino and Keaton make painfully real.
Connie, played with glorious sharpness and wit by Talia Shire, has morphed into Lady Macbeth. Mafia princesses can never run things, but they can pull the strings. It's Connie who ruthlessly tells Vincent, "You're the only one in this family with my father's strength. If anything happens to Michael I want you to strike back." She has asked the right person.
Vincent is central to many of the set pieces. During a meeting of Mafia heads in Atlantic City, when Michael announces he is out of the crime business, a helicopter approaches the window and shoots most of them dead. Vincent rushes Michael, the main target, to safety. The intrigue and rapid-fire violence in the perfectly orchestrated scene might obscure the real point: Michael can't escape his past. That attack causes his cry: "Just when I thought I was out..." Pacino's performance may have become an object of derision, but he knows what he's doing. He is raw and angrily over-the-top in some scenes, but modulates those outbursts with quieter moments. When a stress-induced diabetic attack sends him to the hospital, in his delusional state he calls out Fredo's name. Pacino shows us a conflicted Michael, weakened yet clinging to power.
The power of the re-edited finale
The tone becomes more ominous and the themes more spiritual when the entire family goes to Sicily for Tony's opera debut. (There are spoilers here, but the time limit on spoilers has expired after 30 years.) Michael grapples with the Sicilian Mafia, for reasons linked to the Immobiliare deal, but that is less important than his inner crisis. He makes a confession to a cardinal, breaking down in tears as he says, "I'm beyond redemption." When his protector, Don Tommasino, becomes another victim of Michael's power struggle, he sits by the coffin and says to God, "I swear on the lives of my children, give me a chance to redeem myself and I will sin no more." In this version, Coppola eliminates lines in which Michael asks why he is feared and not loved, removing that plea for the audience's sympathy. Michael gives Vincent control of the family, but does he really have a clear conscience when he knows too well the vengeance Vincent will plan?
The Trump era has been full of Godfather references; Trump himself regularly attacks CNN's Chris Cuomo by calling him Fredo.
That revenge plays out in the elaborate, gripping final sequence at the opera, a counterpart to one of the most famous episodes from The Godfather, when a baptism is intercut with a series of murders. That first sequence was about Michael's rise to power; now he suffers the consequences. While the family watches Tony on stage, Coppola weaves in scenes of Vincent's crew settling scores. One shoots an enemy who plummets off a beautiful spiral staircase. Another murders a rival by stabbing the man's own eyeglasses into his neck. At the opera, hitmen are after Michael, which leads to the shooting on the steps, and a bullet meant for him that kills Mary. For him there is no coming back from that, no possible way to forgive himself.
As the film ends, Coppola makes a brilliant editing choice. The original ending flashed ahead years to the elderly Michael, sitting alone in a gravelly yard as the camera closes in on a face still full of desolation and sadness. He falls to the ground, obviously dead. With a tiny cut, Coppola transforms the meaning of the scene. It now ends with the close-up of Michael's face, still alive. Living with his guilt is his true death, a death of the soul and of hope. Coppola adds text at the end, which says: “When the Sicilians wish you ‘Cent'anni’... it means ‘for long life’... and a Sicilian never forgets.” Michael is doomed to a long life of remembering.
Godfather, Coda restores Coppola's original darker vision, but one element creates a jolt even he couldn't have seen coming. The locations listed in the end credits include Trump Castle Casino Resort in Atlantic City, where the exterior of the helicopter attack was shot. The Trump era has been full of Godfather references. Some are from mainsteam media, including a 2018 Atlantic Magazine article with the headline Donald Trump Goes Full Fredo, comparing a Trump tweet saying that he is “like, really smart” to Fredo famously insisting in Godfather II, “I'm smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb, I'm smart!” Similarly, Twitter trolls routinely mock the president's circle and his grown children as Fredos, portraying them as weak and bumbling like the character, including pasting Donald Trump Jr’s head on a photo of Fredo's body. Donald Trump himself regularly attacks CNN's Chris Cuomo by calling him Fredo. Godfather II even turned up in court documents charging Trump's advisor Roger Stone with obstructing justice, citing an email in which Stone asked someone to protect him the way Frankie Pentangeli covered up for the Corleones. Today the location credit lands like a coda to the end of the Trump presidency, and offers a reminder of how influential the Godfather films have been, even when they were embraced for all the wrong reasons.

If anything is going to get you in the Christmas spirit, it’s English actor Nicholas Galitzine’s latest look. In his newest starring role, the 26-year-old wears a dashing Feng Chen Wang red suit, with any echoes of Old Saint Nick negated by the slick fit and even slicker hairdo.
He wore the tailoring to join an all-star cast including model and British Vogue cover star Adut Akech, The Morning Show actor Bel Powley and designer Michael Halpern in a new tongue-in-cheek film for Mercedes-Benz. The stars appear as contestants in a retro take on a gameshow hosted by Adut, Supermodel Fashion Statement, in the hope of winning a Mercedes G-Class. Nicholas plays a heightened version of himself in the ���OTT” production, which was “super fun” to film, he told Miss Vogue over the phone.
“The red suit really just kind of popped along with the other extremely bold outfits we wore as a cast,” he said. “I’m very much an easy person, and I love to work with people who have bold eccentric vision. As a performer, I love to facilitate that in whatever way.”
Nicholas’s performing career wasn’t part of any grand plan – he says he was more at home on the rugby pitch than the stage while at school. But a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe saw him return to South West London with a flurry of agents eager to have him on their books. “I was always a pretty shy kid. At that point in my life, [being in a play] felt like a big step that I needed to take, but I wasn’t expecting anything to come of it,” he said. “There, this idea was presented to me of potentially becoming an actor, which was kind of crazy. I left school unsure of what I wanted to do in life. It was kind of by fate that it came at this perfect moment, and I haven’t really looked back since. I don’t think anyone who I went to school with would have necessarily have been like, ‘Oh, he’s going to be an actor one day.’ I am just as surprised as anyone else.”
Seven years have since passed, and Nicholas has had roles in Netflix’s Chambers and as a closeted teen in the Irish film Handsome Devil, and played Timmy Andrews in The Craft: Legacy, released earlier this year. But it’s his role as Prince Charming in the forthcoming live action retelling of Cinderella – due for release early in 2021 – that is sure to catapult him fully into the spotlight.
For Prince Charming, Nicholas drew on his own personality and experience to bring a modern, more human element to the role. “I definitely had a sort of rebellious period as a kid and was alway getting into trouble and was very mischievous,” he chuckled down the phone. “Yet I’ve always aspired to be the quintessential gentleman. This version of Prince Charming is very much a fusion of both those things. He’s not your typical clean-cut, linear fairytale prince, there’s definitely an edge to him and there are things about him that make him more human than your typical fairytale prince.”
The release of Cinderella couldn’t be more timely, he hopes. After the last 12 months, a happily ever after might be just what everyone needs. “People will be drawn in by the familiarity of it, but then ultimately surprised by our interpretation of it, which is kind of the best of both worlds,” Nicholas said. “I think you always feel a certain level of nervousness when you’re taking on a character that is so well known and so iconic. I felt very comfortable in the fact that we were making something bold and new, and with the team that was assembled around me, I was just so supported going through the process.”
Fans of the original Disney classic will be pleased to hear that this Cinderella is packed with musical numbers. “I just had such an incredible amount of fun doing it, being in a movie musical is one of the greatest creative gifts you can possibly imagine,” said the actor. “It was definitely intimidating in the beginning, but as soon as we finished I was so sad it was over.” Of his co-star, Camila Cabello, who plays the titular role, Nicholas said: “I can tell you for a fact that I have never felt as untalented as when I had to sing alongside her and the other incredible singers, like Idina Menzel (Cinderella’s evil stepmother), and Billy Porter (who plays a genderless Fairy Godmother). I just feel so blessed to be on these tracks with these incredible singers, and regardless of what happens in life, no one can take that away from me now.”
The Cinderella soundtrack won’t be the only album Nicholas appears on next year. “I’m going to be releasing some of my own music in the new year, which is super exciting because I’ve never really had time to pursue that, as acting has taken precedence,” he said. “My goal is to continue working with passionate, driven, artists who are willing to think out of the box, and to keep challenging myself as an artist and a creative.”
Fashion is something else that Nicholas is keen to get his teeth into. Having donned “Cuban heels and super-tight trousers” to play Prince Charming, he’s been picking up style notes from set. “I think you have to step outside of your aesthetic comfort zone when you’re creating characters, because for me, a lot of characterisation happens in costume building,” he explained. “I’ve been very lucky to play a plethora of different characters, and have had to experiment with a lot of styles that aren’t typically what I wear and have been influenced through that.”
He said he admires the wardrobe of Harry Styles, who famously takes a fluid approach to getting dressed. “Something that I’ve definitely taken on when I think of my style icons – people like Harry Styles and the way he’s managed to bring a femininity to his masculinity – is that that’s definitely the way that we’re moving as men going into 2021.” Nicholas name drops young designers Daniel W. Fletcher and Harris Reed as creatives he would like to work with in the near future, and adds that he’s long admired the work of Kim Jones and yearns to own a Tom Ford Suit.
Though classically handsome, Nicholas admits that he hasn’t always felt accepted by the fashion and film worlds. As a broad-shouldered former rugby player, Nicholas said some fashion brands simply don’t cater to his shape, but added that things are changing. “I still have thick thighs, but the male aesthetic is very much tailored to the Timothée Chalamets and the Charlie Plummers of this world,” he said. “I think that we’re moving back into this space of normalising different body types, for both men and women. I think there has been a beauty standard in fashion and the movie industry, but all the shapes are great shapes as far as I’m concerned. If people don’t want my thick thighs then that’s just that’s their fault.”

Chicago knew her name just as they knew who her benefactor was. Her eyes flashed to him and suddenly the music on her lips tasted bitter. He devoured her gaze, sending her a dimpled smirk that infuriated her.
Especially with her by her side. Such a beautiful bride.

1927
Caroline surveyed the room; the glitz and glamour still taking her by surprise. She was still not used to such luxury or even the flaunting of wealth in such a manner. She took in the guests and decor. Small lights littered the trees on the grounds and white balloons had been blown up for the occasion. The chandelier that hung in the main entrance of the large home cost more than anything Caroline had ever purchased in her life with its diamonds and crystals that sparkled when the light hit it in just the right manner.
Despite prohibition, alcohol flowed freely. Towers of glasses were stacked high while the champagne flowed down them like a fountain into a giant punch bowel. It was lavish and an insult to the rules the government put in place. However, he laughed at the rules, stating that they are guidelines that are meant to be broken, and did as he pleased. He owned speakeasies along with the rest of Chicago being in his pocket.
The marble flooring echoed as every woman’s heel tapped against it; rushing from one party goer to another. Their laughter drowned out by the sound of jazz coming from the grounds in the back of the manner. She could hear her own voice with the backup of the band she had grown to know and love over the last few years. Chicago knew her name just as they knew who her benefactor was. Caroline had always loved to sing and had dreamed of having a Jazz band of her own to back her voice; if it hadn’t been for him, she never would have had the chance; and most likely would be dead. She came from a poor family. She would spend her days in a tiny apartment in the middle of the city with her parents, singing to the neighbor’s child as her parents fought again. She never had more than those few walls to call home and it was enough for her. Even as the world fell into war and then the influenza took so many lives; her father’s life included. It baffled her mind that she ever would have made it so far to be standing on a stage, preforming for one of Chicago’s most lavish weddings.
His wedding.
She shouldn’t be so surprised. He had always made his interest known; from the moment they became acquainted. Yet, after having her in his bed for years, he still had not married her. Perhaps it was because she was not exactly a respectable woman. When they met, Caroline thought he was going to kill her, and if she had been anyone else; he probably would have.
Seeing him there with a woman who was one of the Chicago’s rich little debutantes, part of her wished that he had.
1922
Caroline walked along the docks, her heels hitting against the wooden boardwalk; letting anyone in the general facility know that she was there. She didn’t want to hide or run; Caroline was tired. She didn’t want to play this game anymore and besides; it wasn’t like she had nowhere to sleep anyway. She was tired and hungry. She had been sleeping under the stars for days and had little to eat. She hadn’t been able to find a man to take her in over a week and the money she had previously earned had since been spent.
Caroline was done. She knew what she was doing as the breeze from the docks grazed over her cold skin. She had left her coat behind somewhere and if she did not find what she was looking for, then the winter could take her. She heard that it would be like falling asleep. She looked down at her brown dress. It had since lost its luster and there were holes in it. Her stockings were torn, and her feet hurt from her heels; but she did not own another pair of shoes.
She had hoped that she would be in something prettier when she died but there was no changing that now.
Caroline’s thoughts turned from her inevitable death towards the Model T that just came to a halt. She could hear a terrified voice screaming from inside it. Two men exited the Ford and walked around to the back; neither man seemed to have noticed her presence. They pulled a third man from the back and tossed him onto the boardwalk before he quickly scurried to his knees. One man pulled a pistol from his belt while the other leaned up against the car.
“Please, please please! I didn’t mean it. I’ll pay everything back.” The man on his knees begged while the other man just aimed the pistol at him. The man kept begged while the other looked towards the man who was leaning against the car. That man raised his hand as though giving permission and the one holding the pistol fired. Caroline heard the loud pop of the gun and watched as the man who was keeling brains splattered against the docks. Caroline could not help the scream that passed her lips.
“Shit!” The man holding the pistol hissed and quickly went after Caroline; who started running. Reality of what was about to happen to her set in and her thoughts of death fled her mind. All she could think of was survival. She ran but the man caught her quickly and dragged her back towards the other, throwing her on the ground; right beside the dead body of the man they just murdered.
“Now, Rippah. Is that how we treat a lady?”
“Boss, she saw-“ The boss cut the man, Rippah, with a sharp look and the man fell silent. The boss knelt down before her and Caroline got a good look at him. He had curly blond hair and the most piercing blue eyes that she had ever seen. He was well dressed, and Caroline could tell by the state of his clothing that he was wealthy; and given how she was meeting him, most likely in the mob. Caroline was not a fool; she knew who came to these parts at this time of night. She had been looking for them in hopes of them doing the job for her.
“I apologize for my friend. He lacks manners sometimes.”
“It’s okay.” Caroline replied in a small voice
“What is a pretty little thing like you doing out here at this time of night?” His eyes traveled over her body and Caroline felt a blush fall over her skin. The man held out his hand and pulled her to her feet. “And so poorly dressed at that. You must be freezing.” He unbuttoned his coat and draped it over her shoulders and on instinct, Caroline pulled it tightly around her freezing body.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome but you didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?” He didn’t seem angry, but Caroline got the impression that she should not have him repeat the question. Her eyes traveled to the body on the ground and the blood glistened in the moonlight; chucks of what she assumed was his brain lingered beside his head.
“For the same reason you are.” Caroline whispered, her eyes locked with his and she saw a moment of surprise in them. “I was hoping that something like this would happen. Having you do it for me would be easier than killing myself.”
“Then why did you run? Stefan here would have been happy to shoot you on the spot, but you ran.” Caroline looked over her shoulder at the man who she now knew was named Stefan. He holstered his pistol in his jacket and came to drag the body towards the edge of the docks; dumping him into the river. “You changed your mind. You realized that you don’t want to die.” Caroline gave her head a sharp nod. “Why did you want to in the first place?”
“I’m cold. Tired. Hungry.” Caroline’s voice was soft, and she saw the pity in both Stefan’s and his employers’ eyes. The latter reached out and tucked one of Caroline’s blonde curls behind her ear.
“I know how that feels all too well.”
“I don’t think I could stand another night sleeping in the cold and then I realized that it wasn’t going to be just one more night, but several. I thought ending it would be a mercy, but I don’t want to die. I just don’t want to live like this anymore.” Gathering her bravery, Caroline took a step forward and pressed her hands against his chest; dragging them downward towards his belt buckle. “But, if you’re willing, I’m sure we could come to an arrangement.”
“Is what you do?” He asked, stopping her hand by grabbing her wrist. His hold was gentle, and she was surprised by the lack of a painful grip. “You find a man willing to bed you in order to have a warm place to sleep? Then you go on your merry way when he pays you?” Caroline nodded and she could see a shift in his gaze. Gone was the sympathy and replaced by anger. “How old are you?”
“Seventeen.”
“So young.” He muttered and Caroline had to hold back a snort. She could tell that he was not much older than she was, despite the fact that the way he carried himself made him seem so much older. “Well, that ends tonight. Tell me, Sweetheart, what skills do you have? Other than the obvious, of course. I’m sure you’re excellent but I’m thinking of something that does not involve you lying on your back.”
“Uh…” Caroline was dumbfounded. She thought deeply at what she could possibly be good at. She could read but not well. Her father was never able to really devote the time to teaching her fully. She could cook when she had food and clean when she had materials to do so. Yet, there was only one thing she could think of that she excelled at. “I can sing.”
“You can sing?” He repeated, interest taking over him. Caroline nodded and he smiled widely, transforming his face into something far more handsome than should be legal. “Well, then. Sing for me.”
“Now?”
“Now.”
Caroline thought of all the songs she knew, and they all seemed to leave her. She was only left with one, the lullaby her mother had sung to her when she was a small little girl, scared of the shadows on the wall. Before he could ask her again, Caroline’s soft and warm voice caressed his ears. His smile softened and she could tell that he enjoyed what he heard. He didn’t stop her but instead let just listened to her sing. When the melody came to an end, Caroline could feel her heart pounding in her chest.
“You really are a songbird, aren’t you?” He moved his hand from her wrist and brought her knuckles up to his lips. He kissed her hand, his eyes still pouring into her soul. “And what is your name, Sweetheart?”
“Caroline.”
“It is very nice to meet you Caroline. I’m Klaus Mikaelson.”
1927
Caroline made her way into the makeshift dressing room she was using for her performance that night. It was one of the many demands she made when she was summoned to perform this insult to her person. It was large and lavish. There was a deep red couch pushed against the wall and a vanity set up at the far end of the room. She walked towards it and sat down on the bench; gazing at her reflection in the mirror. She did not need this much space, but she knew it was his way of trying to apologize; but she honestly did not know what she could ever forgive him for this.
The red roses in the middle of the room only made her want to scream. She knew who Klaus was. She knew what he was capable of from the moment she met him on the docks five years previously and yet she never imagined he would break her heart this way. She wished had had killed her instead. It would have been a kindness.
Caroline heard the door behind her open and fury swept through her. Klaus stood in the doorway and slowly closed it behind him. She turned on the bench and glided towards the table in the middle of the room. She picked up the vase full of roses and threw it at him. Caroline got a sense of satisfaction watching him dive out of the way. The vase shattered against the wall; water, glass and roses littered the floor.
Klaus, who she had to admit was dressed in such a dapper manner that it made her heart hurt, slowly approached her with his hands up in surrender. Hot tears pooled in her eyes and she knew that her black mascara was leaving a large trail down her cheeks. The mere fact that he had the audacity to look ashamed only made her angrier.
“Sweetheart-“ A large crack sounded across the room as Caroline’s open hand slapped his face. She hoped it left a mark. Klaus went still and Caroline raised her hand again to strike but before she could hit him, Klaus grabbed her wrist; making her hand immobile. “Do not hit me again Caroline.”
“Bastard.” Caroline hissed back at him as she pulled her hand from his grip. She turned her back on him and wrapped her arms around herself. She took a moment to collect herself before turning to face him again. “Well? Where is it? Where is this apology you have carefully constructed? Hmm? That is what the roses were for? Weren’t they?”
“They were.”
“Fuck you.” Caroline bit out and at least he looked ashamed. “How could you? For months I’ve had to watch you parade around with her. She wore that smile, gazing up at you as though you really loved her. Does she know what you are? Of course, she does. Everyone does. Tell me, how does your new wife feel about the fact that you had your whore sing for her on her wedding day?”
“Her name is Cami-“
“I don’t give a fuck what her name is.”
“and you’re not a whore. You have not been a whore in a very long time.” Caroline huffed. She felt in that moment that she never stopped being one. She remembered the first time Klaus took her to his bed. It was merely weeks after they first met, and he was the only man who had her body since; but Caroline realized that she still was a whore but only had one client. She thought he loved her, but she clearly was deluding herself.
“When we met, I had nothing to my name. Just a ratty dress and a pair shoes that hurt my feet.” Tears were falling fast now, and Klaus took a step towards her; this time Caroline did not stop him from touching her face. “But I had myself. I may have been desperate, but I gave myself to you. You gave me a life, but I gave you my body, my soul and my heart. I gave you a son.”
“A son that you have not let me see in months.”
“Really? You want to fight over that?” Caroline pulled out of his grasps; sending him a hateful glare. “What was I supposed to do? You broke my heart. You didn’t have the decency to tell me you were going to propose to that half-witted tramp until I read the announcement in the papers.” Klaus moved to interrupt her, but she held up her hand, silencing him. “So, what, I was just supposed to watch as you picked him up and take him home, to be raised by Cami.”
“Is that what you think?” Klaus whispered to her, his tone disbelieving. “Is that why you’ve kept Will from me? You thought I would take him from you? Give him to Cami and that the three of us would play the happy family?” Caroline turned and sat down on the bench that belong to the vanity. She crossed both her legs and her arms; refusing to look at him. Klaus made his way towards her and kneeled on the ground before her. He unfolded her arms and took her hands into his. “I would never take Will from you. You are his mother. Not Cami. You. I had hoped that you would extend that courtesy to me, but I suppose I cannot fault you for that.”
“I lost you. I couldn’t lose him too.” Caroline whispered to him and peeked at him. Part of her thought that she was coming here tonight; to this wedding and he would kill her. She knew that he would never harm their son, but she believed he had grown tired of her; her use to him having come to an end. Not even her singing voice could save her. “He was the last thing I had left of you.”
“I’ve been trying to explain for months Caroline, but you refused me at every turn.”
“You’re Chicago’s largest mob boss. If you wanted to see me bad enough, you could have managed it.”
“I respect you enough to not just barge into your home, Sweetheart.”
“Tell that to your wife downstairs.”
“I have handled this badly.” Klaus at least had the decency to look ashamed. Caroline thought back to all the gifts and flowers he had sent over the last few months and how she sent them back. She thought on how she refused him access to her penthouse in the heart of Chicago that he had built for her shortly after she started singing at his speakeasy. “How can I acquit myself?”
“Get an annulment.”
“Will a funeral do?” Caroline’s eyes snapped to his, her heart pounding. “If you would have let me explain instead of turning me away at every turn, we might have been able to avoid all this heartache.” Klaus picked up her hand and kissed the back of it again. “I needed the O’Connell assets and the only way to do that was through marriage to Camille. Unfortunately, the only way her brother would allow me to marry her was if she believed that I actually loved her. However, Cami is not going to survive her wedding night. Neither is her brother in fact. As her next of kin, I will inherit the entire O’Connell fortune and their business connections.”
“That was why you’ve been parading her around town for months? To woo her? Just so you could marry her and then kill her on your wedding night?” Caroline asked, knowing how charming Klaus could be. For months she had been imagining them together, doing all the things she had had done with him. Never before had she felt so discarded as she had when she saw them together at his club; him looking at her as though she hung the moon. “You bastard.”
Caroline, consumed with anger, pushed Klaus to the ground. He clamored to his feet quickly just as Caroline was getting to hers. She balled her hands and hit his chest; but they both could feel the lack of effort behind her assault. She hit his chest over and over again, hot tears streaming down her face. Soon enough the fight left her, and Klaus pulled her into a tight embrace; rocking her back and forth as she cried into his chest, staining his white button-down shirt black.
“I’m sorry Caroline.”
“You broke my heart.” Caroline muttered into his chest. “I thought you stopped wanting me and that you were going to take Will from me. I thought I was going to end up having to sell myself again to make ends meet.” Klaus froze under her touch, not believing that she would have thought such a thing. “Then you brought me here to sing to her. I thought you were going to kill me, making room for her.”
“It was the only way I could get you to speak to me.” Klaus told her, pulling her from his chest. Caroline looked up into Klaus’s eyes and she could see the pain being away from her caused; and it gave her hope. He placed his hands on her cheeks, smearing the mascara across them. “I want you to hear me Caroline. You will never lay on your back again to survive. I refuse to allow that to happen. I love you and I could never kill you. I have almost since that first time I heard you sing. My little songbird.”
“You’re still a bastard.”
“But I’m your bastard.” Klaus soothed her and Caroline gave an insufferable huff. He kissed the top of her head. He could tell that she was still mad at him and he knew that she should be. When he explained why Caroline was refusing to see him to his brothers, even Kol explained that he messed up. Hearing that he made a bad decision by his younger brother whose entire life was nothing more than a string of bad decisions hit home. “How can I make up for it? Shall I worship you? Shall I get on my knees and show you how much you mean to me?”
“Seriously?” Caroline stated with an amusement in her tone. “You’re newly married and instead of dancing with your bride, you’re up here trying to seduce the nightclub singer who probably looks awful at the moment?”
“You look beautiful. The long white silk dress was a nice touch by the way.” Klaus teased her, knowing that she chose to wear white for the soul purpose of making the bride even more angry. “And, yes. I want you. It’s been months since I’ve had you in my bed. I miss you. I miss waking up to you in the morning and hearing you sing to Will.” Caroline opened her mouth to retort but Klaus placed his finger on her lips. “I know it was my fault. You do not need to remind me of that.”
“Well, if you were so desperate for attention, I’m sure Cami would have been more than happy to meet your needs.” Caroline bit out, her hatred for Klaus’s new wife bubbling at the surface. Klaus had always made it known to Caroline that he did not want her in another man’s bed; and it was a sentiment that Caroline shared when it came to him. She knew that he was a powerful man who would do what he pleased but she did not want to share him. “I’m sure she has been very useful.”
“I’ve never touched Cami. Not like that.” Klaus told her and the firmness in his voice made her believe him. “I have not had another woman in my bed for years and I do not plan on starting now. I’ve done many horrible things but being unfaithful is not one of them.”
“Says the groom seducing the nightclub singer on his wedding night.”
“I’ve never been unfaithful to you.” Klaus clarified and Caroline gave a small genuine smile. Klaus wasn’t out of the woods completely, but he was making progress. She would still make him work for forgiveness and earn her trust back completely. Pretty words and murder do not make up for the months of heartbreak that Caroline had to suffer for his agenda.
“Good.” Caroline leaned up and kissed his lips gently. At first, Klaus did not believe exactly what was happening. Soon enough, Klaus deepened the kiss and pressed Caroline’s body to him; having her wrap her arms around his shoulders. Their kiss quickly turned into a battle of tongues that was going to have no winner; for they both where stubborn. Klaus backed Caroline up until her legs hit the stool of her vanity. Klaus reached over and tossed all the contents of the vanity onto the ground with a clash and sat Caroline on the hard-wooden top; her back pressed against the mirror. Caroline weaved her hand through his hair and pulled his head back. “I want you on your knees.”
With a devilish smirk, Klaus pulled the stool from the vanity and sat down upon it. He placed his hands on her legs and spread them; trailing the long silk dress up her legs until it was at her waist. His hands traced over the stockings, garter and the belt that held it around her waist. Caroline knew he liked to see her in lingerie; especially when it was hidden under her clothing, a secret only he knew about. She had hoped that he would see her in such clothing before slamming the door in his face, but this was far better. Klaus’s eyes turned upward when he noticed that she was not wearing anything that covered her center and smirked at her.
Knowing that it was a game she had wanted to play, Klaus remained silent and reached out to touch her clit; feeling how wet she already was. He traced the bundle of nerves and Caroline arched her back; crying out his name. He slipped two fingers inside her and began to pump them in and out; curing his fingers in order to hit that one spot inside her that he knew pushed her towards the edge. Klaus leaned forwards and replaced the thumb with his tongue; licking and sucking at her center.
“Yes. God yes. Klaus! Yes!” Caroline cried out as she gripped at his hair, guiding him in the direction that she wanted him to suck at her. She spread her legs wider as though to give him more room. She wanted to move her hips in order to fall into a rhythm, but Klaus gripped them; holding her still. She continued to scream out his name, knowing that the party was in full swing and they would not be able to hear her over the music she could hear; although, part of her wished that Cami could hear exactly what her husband was doing in that moment.
The thought of what would have been Cami’s heartbroken face is what sent Caroline over the edge. The wave of release washed over her and she did not care that how she looked in that moment; all she could focus on was how Klaus’s tongue licked up her juices from her release.
Once Caroline came down from her high, she pulled on Klaus’s hair and pulled him up to her, pulling him into a bruising kiss; tasting herself on his lips. Her hands went down to undo his belt and push his pants down his legs. Realizing what her intent was, Klaus pushed his pants down far enough that he was able to free his acing member. He lined himself up with her, his eyes pouring into hers, and he eased his way inside.
“Klaus.” Caroline hissed as she felt him stretch her. It had been months since she had been with him and her body was readjusting to having him inside her. Slowly, Klaus pulled out before easing back inside her. After a few gentle thrusts his pace began to pick up speed and turn into a harsher rhythm. He tilted his head so his lips were close to her ear and Caroline could feel his hot breath on her skin.
“Do you like that Caroline? Do you like how it feels when I’m inside you? Stretching you?” Klaus whispered in a low tone, that made Caroline whimper. The vanity creaked underneath their rocking movements. “I’ve missed you. I’ve missed feeling you and hearing you as you cry out my name. You are mine Caroline and I did not like it when you defied me.”
“You’re the one who got us into this mess. Oh! Just like that!” Caroline hissed as he hit a sharp angle inside of her, causing her to cry out. She dug her nails into his shoulder, knowing that his suit jacket would prevent her from leaving the claw marks she desperately wanted to leave. She wanted to mark him; to show the world that the most powerful man in Chicago belonged to her. “And don’t you dare assume that you do not belong to me. I do not care how powerful you are or who you are trying to screw over. Pull a stunt like this again and you’ll never feel this again.”
“Christ Caroline, I love it when you’re angry.” He thrusted hard into her; the vanity slammed into the wall behind them. “She could never compare to you. She lacks your smile and dark humor. She does not understand what it takes to be in this world. She wants to fix me and thinks that I am capable of redemption. She does not know me like you do. She has not stood beside me or given me her loyalty like you have. It will always be you Caroline. From this day forward, I will only give myself to you.”
It was his vow that made Caroline come again, screaming out his name as loud as she could. Klaus froze as he released himself inside her, wondering if she would be able to give him a second child. They lingered with one another for a few moments before Klaus pulled himself from her body; Caroline whimpering at the sensitivity her body now felt.
Klaus stood back and pulled up his pants while Caroline slid off the vanity; taking a seat on the bench in front of it; feeling Klaus’s release on her thighs. She picked up a few odds and ends and placed them on the vanity before looking at herself in the mirror. It was a frightful sight. Her hair was falling from the pins she had holding into a wavy bob; her make-up was completely smeared across her face. She had a few more sets to sing before the party ended and she could head home.
Caroline started to right her appearance when Klaus came up behind her. He placed his hands on her shoulders and leaned down to kiss the top of her head. Out of habit, Caroline reached up and took his hand into hers. He brought it to his lips and kissed it. A looked passed between them and they both knew everything hinged on what happened tonight once the party was over.
Caroline would go home after the last few rounds on stage. She would check on her son who should be fast asleep in his bed. She would kiss head and head to her own bed, knowing that she would be tired the next morning; wondering if Klaus was going to stay true to his word or betray her again.
Their relationship hinged on what he chose to do.
“Klaus.” Caroline called to him as he made his way to the door in order to return to the party below. He paused and looked over his shoulder at her. “If Cami is not dead by morning, I meant every word. You’ll never have access to me again.”
Klaus gave a curt nod and left the door; closing the door gently behind him.
Rumor had it that Cami’s screams could still be heard echoing in the mansion walls long after her husband murdered her on their wedding night.

16/10/2020-Lakeside and more on a very sunny Friday: 10 different pictures in this photoset to the ones I tweeted tonight
I took the first seven pictures in this photoset today as I went for my Lakeside lunch time walk in yet more glorious sunshine this week it really did look brilliant with the blue sky too out today, the seven photos are of flowers in the garden before I went for the walk, three landscapes, nice yellow autumn leaves which I photographed yesterday and lots of my pictures have included these distinctive tall trees at Lakeside which really stand out in the landscape lately, another landscape and some leaves on trees starting to turn red. Red and yellow leaves dominating my walk once again today, I also enjoyed seeing some flowers and mushrooms and taking pictures of them which I tweeted on Dans_Pictures earlier this evening.
As I walked back along the path between the two fenced off nature reserve areas at Lakeside whilst it was another very peaceful and pleasant walk today it was rather without its incident for wildlife watching. Shown nicely by the fact I did the walk, in at the north east gate entrance, down to by the steam railway station, along to the visitor centre, along a path to the south near to the ford area then around concorde lake over the bridge and out past beach lake much quicker than I have done a walk for a long time really with less stopping to watch wildlife and take photos of it. Obviously a landscape picture which most of today’s were I can unusually take quickly rather than wildlife I might have to edge carefully closer to a species or change a lens to take it.
This was until as I had wondered if they were about as I have seen them twice in this field the northern fenced off area as they do tend to frequent certain areas within Lakeside at different stages of the year I have noticed this year and I was delighted to see a Roe Deer in the long grass of this area. With my macro lens on for most of the walk, change lens I did have to getting my big lens on. Behind the fence this deer was less than 10 metres away from me and sensing me so I stood in the middle of the path getting my big lens on as quietly as I could whilst thoroughly enjoying one of my best Roe Deer views this year as it seemed to look at me a real intimate moment. I got the big lens on and it made it a perfect moment for a photo, my best of the day I tweeted on Dans_Pictures I produced over 30 pictures today so I have got exclusive ones to Twitter in this blog and to take it the sun which was present but in an autumnal way could be blocked out for a moment or two quite easily was shining right on the Roe Deer. It was a fantastic moment I loved watching this beautiful species, the amount of deer species I have seen so well lately here, at Bushy Park, in the New Forest, back in Norfolk I am loving the experiences I’ve had with four species these last few months with the other two UK ones I’ve seen this year too. I was proud of that photo probably one of my best Roe Deer ones ever. I was so happy watching this Roe Deer as the sun stopped shining on it for a bit and then started again. It soon bounded off into the nicely compared to everything else round here now long grass still and its mate which I wondered where it was I could now see with nice antlers as they went further back. I got another picture of the deer with its mate visible too the eighth in this photoset.
As I walked on I heard and then saw a Carrion Crow “crowing” very loudly which was interesting.
When home this afternoon I took the ninth picture in this photoset of the tree visible from my room looking nice again its getting some autumnal leaves on it which I am looking forward to seeing it go the nice yellow colour it does as this is what first made me notice the tree seeing it in autumn over the last few years I am not sure why but until this year I never noticed it in blossom or go nicely green as it did in the summer but this year that was a fantastic thing to observe whilst working from home. So to see it come full circle at the time of year I first saw it will be nice. Interestingly yesterday again I walked past this tree as I walked around the roads to get to Lakeside rather than over the green out the front so I walked behind this tree its very weird seeing it up close and from a different angle something I see so often from my room and am so familiar with.
This evening I did my usual second Friday walk going into the northern path at Lakeside and coming out again, last week was the first one for ages I didn’t do this walk to Lakeside. With things a bit quieter this week I had no real species to see or subjects to photograph for the main purpose of the second walk it was rather just a good chance to get a bit more exercise with more time on a Friday and lull me gently into the weekend and bring the week to a close in my mind. But I wanted to really make sure I got out this evening purely for the fact that my second Friday walks’ days are numbered or any I may do on any other day with the clocks going back soon and it will be pretty much dark around five and even half four when I finish on a Friday as it goes on and not to mention obviously if we go into local lockdown or a circuit breaker national lockdown and exercise may be restricted again I would likely weather permitting stick to the lunch time walk as my one walk if needs be as I always like getting out during my hour off in a day. Obviously everyone’s health has to come first and I fully support any further action now which may have to happen.
I took the tenth picture in this photoset of a view on tonight’s walk with the sun setting I didn’t get out until quarter to six this evening. It did become a sunset walk as I tweeted more pictures of the sun setting too and saw some glorious scenes of the sun heading down with some nice orange scenes. A lovely walk to end a brilliant day. I hope you all have a great and safe weekend.

A quick note about some format changes: I keep track of wrestlers who haven’t had a TV match in over 30 days, but now I’m including the online-only B-shows (in Raw’s case, Main Event). The main reason is because AEW Dark has elevated the importance of that type of show. As for WWE, their changes this year have made it a bit of a moot point--most of the “sit in catering” types were cut, so there aren’t nearly as many people appearing only on Main Event and not Raw. While I’m on the subject, I’m not counting the Raw Underground fights as true matches, since they just seem to be random, vaguely defined brawls.
Drew McIntyre is technically out with a kayfabe injury, but since they’ve already booked him for a title match against Randy Orton later this month I didn’t see the point of putting him on the inactive list. It’s feeling more and more like Orton will end up as world champion, with McIntyre and Lee chasing him as dominant powerhouse babyfaces. Now let’s see if Vince McMahon can find a way to screw that up.
Other key programs for September seem to be Kevin Owens vs. Aleister Black, dissension between Seth Rollins and Murphy, and the Hurt Business (MVP, Lashley, and Benjamin) vs. the midcard faces (Alexander, Crews, Ali, Ricochet, etc.) Dolph Ziggler appears totally directionless right now. With Rey Mysterio hurt, it’s not clear what’s next for Dominick, especially if Rollins moves to a full breakup with Murphy.

I kinda quit listing the women’s tag division as a thing a while back, because having two teams isn’t much of a division. Since then, though, I’ve realized that the men’s tag division (on all three WWE brands) has similarly deteriorated. Which isn’t exactly what I mean when I demand gender parity in wrestling, but I guess fair’s fair.
The stupid thing is that it doesn’t have to be this way. You could package Lana and Natalya as a tag team, and not break up Kay and Royce, and call up more women from NXT. You could have women’s tag teams work across all three brands, instead of just letting the champions do it. But WWE just can’t find the will to make any of that happen.

I suppose Cedric Alexander and Ricochet haven’t exactly broken up, but they haven’t exactly been teaming lately either. Maybe MVP and Shelton Benjamin could make a run for the tag titles. That’s not enough, but it’d be something.

Black just turned heel to start a feud with Kevin Owens, so hopefully he can stop disappearing from TV for months at a time. Akam’s still waiting for Rezar to return from his injury.

I suspect that Roode can enter the US despite the closed border with Canada, but WWE just doesn’t have a good enough reason to bring him in yet.

WHITERIVER EMERGENCY SERVICES RESPOND TO REPORTS OF A CRASHED VEHICLE AT 7:27 AM ON APRIL 21, 2020. officer everett jacobs is the first on the scene, and discovers a black 1967 mustang that has collided head-on with an old maple tree that stands sentry on the edge of town. near the car is the person who made the call, the local doctor who bikes every morning before opening up his office for the day, and when jacobs asks him to step back, the doctor, with blood on his hands, looks up to him and says grimly: “one occupant, and i’m pretty sure he’s deceased.”
whiteriver is a small town, the kind of town where everyone knows everything, and the doctor, decker, is by no means a young man; jacobs saw him when he was a kid, brings his kids to see him because he’s the best (not the only practitioner, but in the eyes of his patients, he might as well be). it’s against protocol, the lines of text seared into jacobs’ memory, screaming protests at this breach, but when he hears those words - i’m pretty sure he’s deceased - jacobs waves him back, allows him to continue his examination, because either way, he’ll get a good look; if he’s alive, well, decker will treat him while they await transport to the big hospital in the city, and if he’s dead -- decker doubles as the guy who does the autopsies... (coroner, jacobs thinks belatedly; that’s the word for it.)
the ambulance arrives, red light swirling, as jacobs has cautiously treaded closer, sweeping the beam of his light across the interior of the car, rather uselessly because the sun’s already on the horizon, its golden-yellow rays glinting off something in the passenger seat. jacobs’ cousin anita is one of the paramedics, and as she and her partner exit the vehicle, jacobs is retreating, walking the perimeter of the car (admiring the paint, the detail, the love that was obviously put into it prior to the wreck), towards the passenger’s side, because this is his job: to determine what happened. but every step he takes is minuscule, and it seems to take him ages to reach the door, because this is his first dead body despite his ten years wearing a uniform; it isn’t that nobody dies in whiteriver, it isn’t even a town where you can proclaim no one is murdered (before his time, there was that serial murderer, fifteen dead bodies, there’s a memorial in the town square; just last week he arrested a handful of teens for vandalizing it) - but through luck, maybe, it’s never been him to respond to the calls involving corpses. they’ve only ever come when he’s off-duty, or preoccupied, and there’s a grumble in the precinct every time, someone wondering aloud why it’s never jacobs.
but it’s jacobs now, and as he pulls open the door of the mustang, he wishes to god it wasn’t.
blood has pooled on the seat, but that’s not what draws his attention, eyes tracking immediately to the pistol, engraved with - ivory, maybe? the grip is elegant, spattered with blood, lying amid the puddle of red and shards of glass from the caved-in windshield. the markings are clearly something, a depiction of something or -one, but he can’t make it out. his hand grips instinctively at the sidearm holstered on his belt, that hair-trigger reaction drilled into his mind in the academy, and he eyes the body - definitely dead, anita, max and decker had whispered, though not unkindly - but he doesn’t relax; jacobs fears dying, a goddamn idiotic phobia for a man in uniform, his brother reminds him frequently, and he has to bite his tongue every time so he doesn’t spit back, well, i didn’t want this job, but what the hell else was i supposed to do?
now he sees what the sun had reflected off of, and jacobs inhales, loosening his fingers, catching his tongue between his teeth as he pulls a glove from the pocket of his vest; gingerly, he grips the flask, gunmetal grey and liquid sloshing inside. he places his flashlight atop the car, clicked off, and with a small pause to fully glove both of his hands, he unscrews the cap, met immediately with the aroma of tequila - retracting from the stench with a visceral disgust. his father was a recovering alcoholic, though recovering didn’t join that label until jacobs was twelve, when his father nearly killed a man in a drunken hit-and-run -- and those twelve years were long enough to create a full-body aversion to even the slightest whiff of liquor.
he holds up the flask as if it’s the head of a decapitated enemy, and he’s the reluctant victor of some battle; slightly shamed, head bowed, expression pinched.
the trio discussing the extent of wounds, attempting to determine which killed their john doe all look up, and as a collective, they exhale, but it isn’t a noise of disgust; it’s a breath of sorrow, and they observe a moment of silence for the war this man had been fighting.

THE LICENSE IN HIS WALLET IDENTIFIES HIM AS JAMES FORD, but a multitude of forged badges - local and federal law enforcement - offer a myriad of other names. fingerprints call him dean winchester, and jacobs has a permanent crease between his brows as he studies the file that accompanies it: first-degree murder, robbery, assault, impersonation of a federal officer, fraud... it’s a laundry list of crimes, and the tension in his temples beats a steady rhythm the more he reads. there’s blogs and documentaries dedicated to this man, there’s conspiracies and theories and even an obscure book series from some writer who seems to be a ghost that follows a man named dean and his brother, sam - and jacobs’ dean has a brother named sam, too.
or had, at least, because he seems to be dead ---- though it seems dean has been dead a couple times, too. st. louis, then again in colorado, and apparently a handful of other times, but the reports are conflicting and his headache’s worsening. there’s reporters camped out in front of the station, in front of the hospital, scouting his house and anita’s and max’s and decker’s, searching for any word, quote, photo they can get.
he abandons his computer mid-article detailing the occult ties to dean winchester, proclaiming he’s a satan-worshiper, a demon himself, satan himself, jacobs retreating to the bathroom, locking himself in a stall, and trying to remember what that engraving on the handle of dean winchester’s gun showed.

SAM WINCHESTER IS SITTING IN FRONT OF THE TELEVISION, watching the nonstop reporting of the ‘apparent death of dean winchester’ - a headline accompanied by a subtitle that reads “again?” they call him a monster, a killer, insane, they remind the public how dangerous he was, that he was one of the most wanted men in the country once upon a time. social media has their theories, their criticisms, some expressing gratitude he’s dead, while others wonder how he’s managed to seemingly die so many times, how he keeps slipping out of custody, and anyway, is he really dead now? some post his mugshot and a series of tweets insisting they’ve seen him, met him, the more bold ones who don’t care about reputation coming outright and saying he saved them from a monster; that his story is real, only to be dismissed as “just as crazy as him” / “he brainwashed u, he’s a psycho, that’s what they do.”
they speak of him as if he isn’t a hero, a man who’s saved the world once or thrice or a dozen times.
sam is in a motel, because he could not be home; he could not let amelia see him crumbling. he had accepted that his brother was gone, though some part of him continued to hope he may resurface; after heaven and hell, why not escape purgatory as well? but time passed, seasons came and went, months became years and sam began to understand it was a futile hope, that he was merely hurting himself the longer he clung to this, the longer he kept dean with him; he was gone, and he wouldn’t want sam like this, anyway, always with an eye and foot towards the door. he would want him to live, and sam could hear dean say that, and hears it again in this motel room that smells of rotten linen: you deserve a life, sammy, it’s all i ever wanted for you.
the weight of the wedding ring on his finger grounds him, and he twists and pulls at it, just like dean did to the one he wears - wore. the one that belonged to their mother.
there’s a knock on the door, quick and efficient, and sam tenses, pulling from a holster on his side a sleek grey pistol.
a voice calls his name - not the false surname he uses now in this new life, but the one he was born to, and he shudders, cocking back the hammer of his gun, crossing the room with military precision.
the voice calls again, but not just his name; this time, she says, “i’m a friend. i knew dean.”

ZARI IS IN THE PASSENGER’S SEAT OF THE IMPALA. sam is behind the wheel. the car is freshly waxed and detailed, the rims shining silver beneath the pale moonlight. around the rearview mirror is the same air freshener dean liked, tree-shaped and bought from a gas station; a charm that bobby gave him bobbles beside it, a little sigil on a metal chain. zari doesn’t know the symbolism of it.
nothing about the car’s changed. dean’s arsenal and talismans are still in the hidden compartment of the trunk; sam and dean’s initials are still engraved in their spot; there’s still a dent in the hood of the car from a typically angry shapeshifter. dean’s knife made from dragonbone and his bible from pastor jim, one of the people who raised the boys when their own father couldn’t, and his stash of pain medication he always believed sam never knew about but did from day one, are all still in the center console; sam hasn’t changed a thing, has just kept up the appearance and the mechanics, keeping the impala pretty and running good for dean’s return. it’s been a week and the news still features his face, and zari is scrolling through a conspiracy thread when they pull into the parking lot; she’s quiet, and so is sam, and the radio is on but it’s low, tuned to one of dean’s favorite stations (sam never even changed the station, never touched the dial once). he looks sideways to his company, this woman who said she was a friend of dean’s - just a friend, she repeated, and sam nodded - who worked with him, hunted with him, because he’s been back for years and didn’t say anything.
he’d been back for years, and he never said anything.
she said it was because dean didn’t want to pull sam away from his life when he was finally living; “not again,” dean had said to her, and though she didn’t understand, sam has never forgotten the way dean crept into his stanford apartment, and how he’s blamed himself for what happened to jessica, in the same way sam shoulders the same guilt. sam is pale, waxen, feeling as dead as his brother is (“it is him,” zari had whispered, and she was crying when she said it; “it’s really him.”) he parks the impala, rolling to a stop and cutting the engine, and zari pockets her phone, looking up at him, then to the moon; it’s not quite full, but it’s swollen and it’s bright, and the lot is illuminated with its white light, the world in shades of white and blue. they exit, doors shutting in unison, and zari jerks her head to the left, to a set of doors by the loading bay of the hospital.
she and a ‘friend’, she said, bribed the right people, and they’ll bring dean’s body to them, to do with what they wish rather than have it cremated like the powers that be decreed.
the doors shudder open; a small woman keeps her head low as she wheels out a body bag on a gurney, not looking at either of them. in the doorway is a shadow, slightly larger than the woman, but it melds into the rest of the darkness after the exchange is complete; not a word is said while the body is placed in the backseat of the impala, and the woman disappears without even a nod.
zari and sam slide into the car, and sam swallows loudly, hands shaking, too badly to even turn the key; zari reaches to hold his wrist, and, quietly, they switch seats.
sam keeps his eyes on his feet, but his cries aren’t quiet, and zari holds his hand while she drives.

TWO PEOPLE STAND NEAR THE PYRE. sam reacts visibly to one as he turns to see them, rushing to help hoist dean’s body, sam’s grip failing; victor henriksen smiles at him, a brief flash of teeth, before shifting his focus to assisting zari in removing dean’s corpse from the bag. he’s been in a morgue for a week, but the freezer only staves off so much decay, and the four of them feel their stomachs churn at the sight of dean atop the unlit wood. victor retreats to the man he’d been speaking to before, who sam eyes with confusion, then alarm as his mouth twists in a growl, fangs glistening.
“yes, benny’s a vampire,” zari says, and sam feels his confusion deepening, heavy in his eyes.
benny offers a curt nod, then says in his southern drawl, “met him in purgatory. got each other out.” he sees sam’s disbelief, and he laughs - an awkward noise at a funeral, and benny coughs so that he doesn’t cry. he keeps it at that, not telling sam all of the things he could, because those things - the love he felt for dean, most of all - he wishes to keep for himself.
victor is stepping forward to hug sam, and sam finally gives him a good look, and he’s smiling now, as best as he can. he asks victor how he is, how he’s been, and victor shrugs his shoulders; he’d been expecting something violent, something vitriolic, for knowing dean was here and not telling sam.
but if sam feels that way (and he does, slightly, vaguely) he keeps it to himself.
it’s benny who lights the pyre; sam doesn’t question this, though he still wonders about him, finding it difficult to envision dean so close with a supernatural. as the flames burn, as dean’s body is reduced to ash, zari and benny huddle together, and victor has sam’s hand in his; as they offer dean to eternal peace, the four of them, the four who’ve loved dean the most in his life, all experience the same thing: the sensation like breathing on the napes of their neck, a shudder of a breeze that seems to say thank you.
the sun has risen by the time the fire dies, the wood spent, a pile of ash atop the blackened ground; benny drives the stake of a cross into the dirt, carved across it the simple inscription “DW.—1.24.79-4.21.20.”
