So I got the notification on the 5th year of this much-neglected blog. Between the last post and this one, so much have happened. The pandemic, the lockdown that followed thereafter, WFH hijinks; the company’s franchise renewal hearings and it’s subsequent denial, the announcement of mass retrenchment, which included yours truly, another set of hijinks, this time for asset accountability transfer on the way to clearance; and me, still trying to get stock of WTF happened with 2020.
I did mention during that particular Zoom meeting when my tenure was announced to be cut that I’ve made my peace with my fate, and to day, I tend to agree. Even prior to COVID19 f*cking us all over, I’ve felt a certain stagnation in my productivity. One school of thought states that I should’ve changed gears then, but I guess the sweet siren of tenure dissuaded me from taking the plunge. Another is that the workplace has evolved into something that I’ve just grew tired of, with the mindset that whatever methods and processes that one pushes clashes with the current direction of the department.
So in short, burnout. There, I said it.
The norm with the company is that once you reach a certain amount of years in tenure, you’re built up to be supervisory (or managerial) status. But even when I was just starting up, I never envisioned going to such heights, preferring to be in the midst of operations, going through the grind of the Mon-Fri 2-10pm “action time”. And the action was there, whether it ends up turning out to be a disaster or averted crisis, it could swing either way, everyday.
Yet we revel on it, being the action junkies that we are. With the threat of programs not airing on time due to many factors, it’s likely the fact that clients look up to our team for answers and solutions. That it was somehow our call if they’ll air or not gives me and the shift-mates a certain chip off our shoulders, gives a heady sensation that’s hard to let go of to move on to the relatively safe confines of management level.
And before you knew it, there goes by 20 years. Almost half my life spent well on my 1st REAL job (there’s an earlier gig, but some other time for that) after technical school. And despite all the bad stuff intermingled with the good ones, I’d say I really had a heck of a run there. The people I’ve met, places I’ve been (work-related or like Akiba up there), training I’ve undergone, it’s all amazing.
And as I go though the paces of starting anew, the temptation to jump back in (once certain parameters are met) has that same heady feel to it. Can’t say I want to take a pass on it, but I think I’ll take a bit of rest for a while. Take a lighter load, travel a bit when the opportunity arises (*cough* Electric *cough* Town *cough*), date (finally!), set-up a decent home-office, the options are out there.
So here’s to the next 2̶0̶ ̶y̶e̶a̶ , screw that.
