Manual Hatchback Throwdown: Volkswagen Golf or Mazda3?
It’s a rare treat when any vehicle arrives in the MotorTrend press fleet with its driver’s footwell crowded with three pedals, so when VW sent us a 2020 Volkswagen Golf TSI with a stick, we couldn’t resist comparing it with another manual “warm hatch” in our fleet: our Machine Grey long-term 2020 Mazda3 hatchback. Yes, we’ve all seen the eighth-generation Golf, which is on sale in Europe already, but it looks like it’s not coming here until the 2022 model year, so for now, our updated 2015 Car of the Year soldiers on. How competitive is it, in its most elemental stick-shifted form?
How Do the Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf TSI Prices Compare?
This is the Borneo pygmy elephant in the garage: Major pruning of the model lines and options availability at both Mazda and VW means the manual versions of these two now come pretty much as mono-spec cars—the Mazda, available in 2018 with a stick in 2.0-liter Sport and 2.5 liter Touring trims priced from $20,240 to $21,735, now only comes loaded with the 2.5-liter engine, the premium package, and no factory options aside from paint colors (which can add between $200 and $595), plus the choice of black or red leather seats.
As recently as last year, VW sold manual Golf TSIs in S or SE trim and offered a $1,295 driver-assistance package that included adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, auto high-beams, and other goodies that would have better matched our loaded Mazda’s price and equipment level. But for 2020, Golf stick options are similarly limited to color and a handful of port-installed doodads at a spec level that’s somewhere between the former S and SE grades. So, at $24,115 our Vee-Dub is $4,330 cheaper than the current going rate for our Mazda3, whereas last year’s more comparably equipped Golf TSI would have been just $1,775 cheaper, and they could have been at parity in 2018 (with a 1.8-liter turbo in the VW). The more ideal head-to-head might be with a base Golf GTI manual (with plaid cloth seats!), but if you can find a stripper S model, the GTI manual starts at $29,515 and can top $37 grand.
Which Is faster, the Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf TSI?
It’ll come as no surprise to read that the 1.4-liter turbo in the Golf, hitching 3.3 more pounds up to each of its 147 horses ran 0.8 second slower to 60 mph (7.7 versus 6.9 seconds) and 0.9 slower through the quarter mile (16.1 seconds at 88.1 mph versus 15.2 seconds at 93.0 mph). That would surprise you more had you been behind the wheel of each, because the torque curves are so different. The little turbo’s 184 lb-ft of peak boost arrives at just 1,400 rpm while the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter doesn’t achieve its 186 lb-ft until 4,000 revs, which forces you to wring that engine out more and deprives the driver of that rush of turbo torque we’re getting pretty used to. The bigger-lunged Mazda engine is also slightly coarser in its delivery than the wee Golf’s four. For the record, that fully loaded $37,415 GTI manual hits those marks in 6.2 seconds and 14.7 seconds at 98.6 mph.
Which Stick Is More Fun to Row, Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
As someone whose right wrist, elbow, and shoulder muscle memory stretches back to E34 and E39 BMW 5 Series, the Honda S600 and S2000, not to mention myriad Mazda MX-5 Miatas, let’s just say that neither of these transverse front-drive cable-operated shifters conjures words like “sublime” or “delightful mechanical precision” the way the above longitudinal rear-drive sticks used to. That having been said, while pressing each car equally hard over the same lovely set of local hilly twists, the Mazda3’s shifter presented some difficulty on quick 3–2 downshifts more than once, and the Golf’s did not. It’s also our sad duty to report that there’s no golf-ball shift knob in the TSI; you must spring for the GTI (or troll the aftermarket) to get that treat.
Which One Handles Better, Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
Here again, the Golf TSI competes with two tire/wheel sizes tied behind its back. The Mazda3’s wider, lower-profile V speed-rated 215/45R18 TOYO Proxes A40 tires are stickier and more aggressive than the Golf’s fuel-efficiency and tread-wear optimized H-rated 205/55R16 Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus shoes. Still, the measurable difference is less than 3 percent in lateral g cornering grip (0.85 to 0.83 g), and 5 percent in a straight-line braking from 60 mph (118 feet for the Mazda, 124 for the VW). Figure-eight performance is also closer than expected, and out on the road, both deliver a reasonably sporting feel, with admirably linear steering response. Neither is a paragon of road feel, however. As a journalist, I’m supposed to sense some deficiency in the Mazda3’s new twist-beam suspension relative to the multilink rear setups in the Golf and the previous 3, and OK, if you pay super close attention on certain cross-car bump events that hit both rear wheels in a turn, maybe there’s a hint of discombobulation or sideways skitter. Maybe. And maybe the mysterious G-Vectoring control that trims power slightly on corner entry to load the front tires serves to mask potential bad behavior. By and large, they both scooted around our backroad ring pretty darned well.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: How Does the Ride Compare?
The VW’s taller tires cushion bigger bumps a bit better, but road textures read through this older chassis a bit more noticeably than in the new Mazda. That having been said, a few of the same bumps excited some dash trim vibration on the Mazda3 that was absent in the VW. The seats are similarly cosseting, though the Mazda leather feels nicer than the VW’s perforated leatherette.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: Which Cockpit Is Nicer?
No question—the Mazda3’s interior looks $8,000 richer at half that price premium. Mazda has been trying to cast itself as the Japanese Audi where interior design and execution are concerned, and the company is making great progress along those lines. Every major surface above the armrests is soft to the touch, and much of it looks hand sewn with contrast stitching. There’s a tasteful chrome strip running the width of the dash, a fancy head-up display, an 8.8-inch color display with rotary push-knob control (just like on an Audi!), and rich red leather. Oh, and the cover for the standard glass sunroof is opaque, whereas the VW’s lets light in.
Our VW featured a beige and black contrasting interior that is generally pleasing to look at, but way more of it is composed of hard plastic, the seats make no secret of their “leatherette” vinyl composition, and the instrument cluster is basically two needle gauges framing a prehistoric low-res two-color driver-information display that now seems as jarring as the Golf’s lack of a three-flash-to-pass function on the turn signal. Naturally, there’s no HUD. One interesting Volkswagen “advancement” is the presence of a USB-C port. Just one. For the whole car. And no old-fashioned USB-A ports into which we all have a million plugs that fit.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: How Do the Back Seats and Cargo Areas Compare?
This average-height (5-foot-10) body fits behind itself easily in both, but there’s a good fist’s worth of surplus head space overhead in the VW (perhaps in part because its sunroof panel slides back outside the roof, not underneath it as in the Mazda). The big rear side windows and lower, level beltline pay off in way better outward visibility in the VW, but a lower cushion provides less thigh support. Both offer 60/40 split rear seat backs, fold-down armrests, and each conveniently attaches the middle passenger’s shoulder belt to the seatback, rather than offering a detachable roof-mounted one. Here again, the ambiance is vastly richer in the Mazda, with the same contrast-stitched soft material and all hard plastics relegated to hip level and below. The VW’s rear seat is bigger, though, offering 1.6 inches more headroom and a half-inch each of leg- and shoulder room relative to the Mazda. Cargo wise, the VW fits a bit more (2.7 cubes with the seats up, 6.6 with them down) and offers a two-position load floor for a bit of bonus space. You also get four cargo tie-down loops and two bag hooks, and a 12-volt power outlet—none of which Mazda provides.
So Which Should You Buy, the Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
How much do you love cars, and to what extent do you follow your head or your heart when purchasing one? If you’re a hard-nosed pragmatist researcher looking to stretch the dollars farthest, the VW clearly makes the most sense. It gets better gas mileage, has a bigger back seat and trunk, and costs less. You probably won’t mind much that it’ll start to look seven years old late next year. If you love cars and you’re not in a position to spend the extra to stretch to a GTI manual, you’ll surely relish looking back at the infinitely sexier Mazda. You’ll also delight in its posh interior and relish utilizing the Mazda’s many advanced electronic features like that head-up display and the Audi-like user interface. 2019’s Top Rides: Part 2

With 2020 quickly approaching I decided to take a look back at a few of my most memorable rides this year. Happily there were a few surprises along the way, vehicles that I thought would be mediocre at best, turned out to be hidden jewels. Here’s part two of three that will follow in the weeks to come.
Hyundai Elantra: An Affordable Class Act
Hyundai’s Elantra is one of those cars that blends unnoticed into the automotive landscape - until now. Redesigned a couple of years back, for 2019 the Elantra gets a sexy mid-cycle makeover.  From the windshield forward the car is all new while a new trunk lid, taillights and bumper freshen up the back.  Thankfully Hyundai isn’t following the competitions’ boy racer look, opting instead for a rich, sophisticated demeanor that doesn’t alienate its youth market.  I had more than a fair share of twenty something’s giving me the thumbs up.

That classy design follows into the greenhouse with clean flowing lines and some welcome upgrades/revisions to the climate and stereo controls and moving to white on black gauges. Regardless of trim, a six-way power driver’s seat and a height adjustable passenger seat are standard. They’re firm and comfortable with great support and I preferred them to the pricier GT version of the 5-door hatchback I had a few weeks later.

Prices start reasonably enough at $17,099 for the base Essential trim line (who comes up with these names and who would brag about having the Essential model?) The Essential offers such essential items (I had to) as heated front seats, Bluetooth, 6-speed manual and a rear view camera. My car had the optional ($1700) automatic with hill start assist, which is available only on the automatic – (why on an automatic?). From there the option/trim levels grow to peak at $27,549 for the Ultimate trim line at which point you can lock/unlock/start your car with your cell phone thanks to Hyundai’s Bluelink. Forward collision avoidance, lane departure, lane keep assist, blind spot warning with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert are also included, and if an inch makes a difference you get an 8” screen over the other trims’ seven inch unit.

Three driving modes allow you to select shift point, steering wheel and throttle controls to suit your tastes and needs.  Sport mode makes the most out of the 2.0L four cylinder’s 147 horses and 132 lb-ft. of torque bringing acceptable fun to your driving experience but speed demons may want to opt for the GT N Line or Sport trims where a 1.6L turbocharged inline four punches out 201 horses and 195 lb-ft of torque, but that’s another story – stay tuned. Oh and to add to the confusion there’s also a 162 horsepower version of the 2.0L in the GT trim. But if you’re into fuel economy, the base car will impress, I managed to get 5.9-l/100 km with mostly highway excursions.

 Compared head to head with its two closest competitors, the Civic and Corolla the Elantra is a no brainer, delivering better fuel economy, better head room, better rear seat hip room (yes there’s room for two adults back there), as well as offering a slew of items as standard equipment that you’d pay extra for or simply are not available on the other two like a heated steering wheel.  On top of which the Hyundai’s ultra-high-strength steel structure gives it a quieter ride.

So if you’re looking for a handsome family sedan that can haul four adults in comfort and not eat up the family budget, hop on down to your Hyundai dealer.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Rabbit: Return of the Rascally Rabbit
First there was the Mini Cooper, then the Honda CVCC, and then Volkswagen unleashed the Rabbit GTI changing forever the persona of the front-wheel drive sedan. The GTI made German handling and performance affordable, suddenly you didn’t need to go to the Bimmer dealership for some Teutonic giddy up and go.  It also changed Volkswagen’s image overnight.
Forty plus years later the GTI is still the hot hatch to beat, perfectly balancing comfort, performance and style.

This year VW resurrected the Rabbit name as an added trim model to the Golf GTI line. If you’re confused, don’t be there are three trim levels available to the GTI buyer; the base GTI starts at a very reasonable $30,845 and comes with 17” wheels and a 6-speed manual transmission, the Rabbit edition, aside from a cooler color pallet, adds Dynamic Chassis Control, push start button, an 8 speaker Fender sound system, LED headlights with adaptive front lights, with the Rabbit logo embroider on the Clark Cloth bucket seat backs. The Rabbit also gets 7.5” x 18” black alloy wheels, all for $33,995. Next up the corporate ladder is the Autobahn edition at $36,145. For the extra two + grand you get satellite navigation, Sirius XM sat radio, a panoramic sunroof, manual height adjustment on the comfortable, supportive buckets and power lumbar support.  The 7-speed DSG automatic is a $1,400 option across the board and unfortunately my left foot was sent to the rest home as my Cornflower Blue (yes that’s the real name) tester arrived in the form of an automatic with Tiptronic paddle shifters.

Regardless of trim, the GTI feeds 228 horses to the front wheels through a turbo charged, direct injected, 2.0L TSI inline four cylinder, by comparison non GTI Golfs leave the factory with a 147 horse, 1.4L TSI engine. VW philes will notice an 8 horsepower bump from last year’s GTI thanks to some factory tuning.  In addition all GTIs get a limited slip differential, allowing you to get better traction and control on the twisties by delivering power to the outside front wheel. Enthusiasts will also be pleased to learn that VW has retained a manual, non-electronic hand brake.

No heated steering wheel.
In short the Rabbit carries all the right stuff. Power delivery is smooth with just an ever so slight hint of turbo lag. If there is a fault, it lies when down shifting with the paddles, as the automatic is slower than I’d like. The adaptive dampening suspension, coupled with the limited slip diff takes an already perfect daily driver and bumps it up several notches on the fun factor. 
My Rabbit came optioned with the $1,750 Driver Assistance Plus package (autonomous e-braking with pedestrian monitoring, blind spot detection, rear traffic alert, lane assist and adaptive cruise)

In the cockpit GTI’s personality differs from plane Jane Golfs with the red ambient lighting and illuminated doorsills. Aluminum pedals, a flat-bottomed steering wheel welcome you to take charge. The instrument cluster is specific to the GTI also. In true German fashion, premium materials and soft-touch plastics are found throughout. Headroom, legroom front and aft is excellent. While all controls are easy to read and manipulate, sadly living in these northern climes a heated steering wheel is missing from the equation.

The Golf has always offered a degree of sophisticated road mannerism not found in any comparably priced sedan and for that matter in few pricier sedans, the GTI takes that formula up a notch while the Rabbit trim offers all the amenities a performance sedan needs. It may be an overused cliché, but the GTI is a true driver’s car. Now if they would only give me a press car with a standard tranny!

Buick Encore: Luxury comes in a small package
I almost totaled the Encore within two minutes of getting behind its wheel. It would have been entirely my fault but quick reflexes and maybe an angel or two, prevented me from a lengthy explanation to my GM rep. I had just surrendered the Rabbit GTI back to the good folks at Volkswagen and jumped into the Buick to head back home when I approached the highway on ramp a little too eagerly thinking I was still in the Rabbit. Well it got squirrelly pretty quick and I was reminded just as fast that I was no longer in a road hugging sedan but a tall, skinny crossover that shared nearly as much road room as the Rabbit.

Now in its seventh year the Encore got a minor facelift a couple of years back, with the most noticeable difference being the waterfall grill that paid homage to ‘50s era Roadmaster. It worked on the larger than life land yacht but did little for the diminutive crossover. The new look takes away from the dorky toy look and gives it a refined appearance. With more and more manufacturers getting into the lucrative compact crossover segment and the Encore’s sales showing no signs of slowing, Buick is doing something right.

Although the Encore is the smallest vehicle in Buick’s lineup, it packs a lot of punch. Three trim levels make up the line starting at $26,400 for the front drive Preferred model that comes with a 138 horsepower, 1.4L DOHC turbocharged inline four. The standard goodie bag consists of Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a rear vision camera, sat radio, electronic stability control with traction control and steering wheel mounted controls on a leather steering wheel.

The $28, 400 Sport Touring rendition gets remote start, a rear spoiler, fancier 18” wheels and fog lamps but opens you up to a slew of options that are not available on the base model including a 153 horse 1.4L SIDI turbocharged four with Stop/Start technology.
My tester, the top-of-the-line Essence trim starts at $33,700 and adds all-wheel drive, heated front buckets, remote start, blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, 6-way power driver’s seat, dual climate zone controls, heated steering wheel. It also came with the optional, aforementioned, Direct Injection 153 horse, 177 ft-lb of torque, four. Both mills feed the wheels through a seamless 6-speed transmission.

Yes at 33 grand the little Buick gets pricey considering its size, but not everyone needs or wants a larger vehicle, so for all the bells and whistles, the Encore’s price gets justifiable.
What makes the Encore a winner in the subcompact crossover segment is its silky ride, a trait worthy of the Buick name and even after my initial kerfuffle, its handling can best be described as nimble – just as long as you remember what you are driving and not driving.

Inside you’ll find an interior that’s tastefully done with great fit and finish, the controls are easy to read and use. There’s plenty of storage bins about for all your travel needs. The seats are comfortable with plenty of headroom, as you’d expect from the tall design. Two burly adults will probably find shoulder and hip room on the tight side and despite Buick’s claim of it being a 5-passenger…well if the three in the back are kids. There’s 18.8 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubes with the rear seats folded. Folding the back seats however means moving the front seats up, diminishing legroom and still not getting a flat floor. In its favor is that the cargo bay is taller than most other compacts.

If you’re looking for a ride that offers ease of entry, a low lift over for the cargo bay while offering an above average ride and small enough to negotiate urban centers’ shrinking streets the Encore is sure to please, all while being a miser at the gas pump.

El nacimiento de la Marca en México tiene como origen la exposición “Alemania y su industria” en 1954, donde se muestran los primeros coches de la Marca y se funda Volkswagen Mexicana, S.A. En 1955, el Príncipe Alonso de Hohenlohe consigue los derechos para abrir la primera concesionaria de autos Volkswagen en México. Debido a la gran popularidad del mítico Volkswagen Sedan, se establece en junio de 1962 la primera planta en la zona industrial de Xalostoc en el Estado de México, bajo el nombre de Promotora Mexicana de Automóviles (PROMEXA) con un ritmo de fabricación de 10 autos diarios.  Para enero de 1964 se constituye Volkswagen de México S.A. de C.V. y se comienza la construcción de la planta en las afueras de Puebla en 1965. Sólo pasan 2 años para comenzar la producción del primer Volkswagen Sedan poblano.
Forjando una gran historia
La fabricación del Volkswagen Sedan en Puebla jamás sería igualada por ninguna otra planta del Grupo Volkswagen, manteniendo una producción constante e ininterrumpida a pesar de la introducción de otras variantes como el Brasilia, la Combi y la Hormiga u otro tipo de plataformas como la del Golf, Jetta o Corsar sólo por citar algunos. De hecho, la planta de Puebla es la única que logró fabricar dos tipos de Beetle al mismo tiempo, el tradicional Sedan con el motor trasero que se fabricó desde sus inicios hasta el 2003 y el innovador New Beetle de motor y tracción delantera que saltó a la palestra en 1994 como Concept One, con un éxito tal, que derivó en un auto de serie  cuya producción se llevó a cabo  en la planta de Puebla en exclusiva para todo el mundo desde el año 1998 hasta la última unidad  en este icónico modelo en 2019.
A mismo tiempo que finalizó la fabricación del Beetle, se celebraron los 65 años de Volkswagen en México, lo que motivó el lanzamiento de una edición especial, el Beetle Final Edition, del cual sólo se produjeron 603 unidades con un equipamiento único.
Innovación digital comercial
El Beetle Final Edition impulsó la creatividad de Volkswagen para despedirlo de un modo muy especial, totalmente innovador y diferente a cualquier otra marca en México, al implementar el apartado de 65 autos por medio del conocido sitio Amazon, poniendo a Volkswagen de México a la vanguardia en la comercialización de autos en nuestro país. Adicionalmente, los privilegiado clientes de estas 65 unidades, con  un precio unitario de 410,065 pesos, podían escoger si querían que su nuevo auto fuera empacado en una caja especialmente  diseñada para contener un auto y que fuera entregado directamente en  su domicilio. Exclusividad y originalidad sin igual para despedir a un modelo  icónico de la Marca, que se produjo en exclusiva en nuestra planta de Puebla durante  más de 20 años y que fue embajador de la calidad de la mano de obra mexicana a más de 80 países en el mundo.
Presencia imparable y constante
El sector automotriz enfrenta a nivel mundial condiciones sumamente complejas por diferentes aspectos y circunstancias, lo que ha obligado a Volkswagen a desarrollar proyectos y estrategias de trabajo para mantener su posición de preferencia en sus diferentes mercados, en donde México destacó en este 2019 con el lanzamiento de nuevos autos y versiones que ayudaron a conseguir este objetivo.
Para muestra, al inicio del año se introdujo Nuevo Gol en su versión aniversario, con espléndidas adiciones de equipamiento y una imagen renovada. La versión aniversario del inigualable GLI contaba adicionalmente con los asientos Confort-Sport de piel con etiquetas conmemorativas a los 35 años, con unos exclusivos rines negros con filo rojo y Digital Cockpit entre otros múltiples detalles.
Un ejemplo sencillo de la incorporación de nuevas tecnologías en los modelos Volkswagen, es el Digital Cockpit; una pantalla de alta resolución que se coloca en el lugar en el que normalmente se acomodan instrumentos analógicos como el velocímetro y el tacómetro, permitiendo poner múltiples configuraciones altamente personalizables y hasta la vista de un mapa virtual, todo a gusto del conductor. Souvenirs From Europe You Can’t Sneak Through Customs
Consider some of the goodies an American visitor to Europe can bring home: rare cognac and (certain) cheese from France, fresh cream truffles from Switzerland, a hard-to-find Irish whiskey from Dublin, a one-off Yves Saint Laurent gown from Paris.
But what about that super-sleek Peugeot or super-cool SEAT you glimpsed on the Côte d’Azur?
Uh-uh.
Just like the prosciutto and tomatoes you savored in Rome, those cars, and many more like them, are forbidden fruit (as is most fruit) when it comes to importing European delights into the United States.
The reasons are complicated, and most have to do with a tangle of federal, state and local laws and regulations. Almost all newer cars available for sale in Europe not built for export to America do not comply with a long list of safety and emission standards. Some have different bumpers, different lighting and even different brakes and brake lines that don’t meet American specifications. And those are just a few examples of noncompliance.
Short of exporting yourself overseas to enjoy a Mercedes-Benz or a Jaguar with a stick shift or a Skoda wagon from the Czech Republic, there are exceptions: Some models older than 25 years, with their original engines, may be allowed in. Of course, buyers must pay for shipping, as in by ship.
Enthusiasts who scour the internet might find a car overseas that had been built to conform to United States regulations, but the choices will most likely be limited. And if you’re considering one of the European delivery programs offered by some carmakers, be aware that those vehicles are basically no different from the models those brands sell in the States; the main benefit is that vacationers can arrange to drive their new vehicles for a set period in Europe before it is sent home, and save on the high cost of a rental car overseas.
For people determined to take a shot at importing a car, a comprehensive guide is published by the Customs and Border Protection agency.
And if you fall in love with those Audi Avants you can no longer buy in America, don’t take it personally. “From a business point of view, the U.S. market simply does not support bringing them here,” said Mark Dahncke, a spokesman for Audi of America. “We do continually evaluate our product portfolio to see whether it makes sense to bring them back. We’ll keep trying.”
Meanwhile, we can always dream. What follows, in no particular order, are some new vehicles from Over There that aren’t currently available Over Here. While others may seek out the best fondue, consider an automotive daydream. And there’s always the rental option.
Volkswagen Up GTI. For those who get a jolt out of the Smart car, this baby is as cute, and as a bonus, it’s fun, fun, fun. One British car authority described it as “a Top Gear award-winner, and all-round tremendous thing.” Top speed is about 120 m.p.h., and its zero-to-60 time is just under nine seconds, but, in Mazda Miata-speak, the joy is in the getting there. The ride is fairly firm — such is the price of a 95-inch wheelbase — but motorway jaunts are delightful, tight parking spots beckon, and everybody (almost) gives the Up a smile.
Audi RS4 Avant. Avants are Audi-speak for wagons, and wagons are pretty much verboten in the States, where the S.U.V. rules. But to Europeans, wagons make sense, and this powerhouse with its twin-turbo V6 motor, developed in partnership with Porsche, is near the cream of the crop. Quattro all-wheel drive is baked into the RS4. If you think wagons aren’t sexy, this one’s an eye-opener.
Subaru Levorg. Almost the whole world gets this wagon-esque model, essentially a version of the WRX sedan that is sold in the States. In typical Subaru fashion, the Levorg isn’t quite sleek (a popular joke not long ago was that Subaru designers worked out of a dungeon), but it is a powerful hauler, especially attractive now that the company no longer offers the practical hatchback WRX in the United States. All-wheel drive is standard, and some Levorgs can churn out 300 horsepower. The name, by the by, stands for “LEgacy eVOlution touRinG.” Of course.
Alfa Romeo Giulia, manual transmission. We know the stick shift is a dying breed in the United States, and it’s clear that take rates on sticks are dropping in Europe as well. But there remain a few examples available overseas — from Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW, among others. We’d choose the Alfa Giulia with its six-speed manual. Time was when the Italians said they’d offer such a gearbox in America, but for now the only choice is an automatic.
Renault Mégane RS. Among heroic European hot hatches, the Mégane is an evergreen, its history dating back more than two decades. Available as either a petrol or diesel (this is Europe, remember), the Mégane has a design similar to the Mazda3. Still, the car’s French character shines though: It’s responsive, lightweight and proudly Gallic. Designers of French cars historically sacrifice handling prowess for creature comfort, but not here, so the Mégane arrives as a cruiser extraordinaire when you bomb down the autoroute.
Citroën C3. While we’re speaking French, sort of, consider the Citroën C3, which emphasizes form over function by taking a page from the customization book popularized in the past decade by Mini. For our money, this four-door hatch is adorable, with its soft curves and purposeful stance. The contrasting roof seems to almost float, and then there’s “Airbump,” a panel of thermoplastic molding, air-filled bumps that line the lower part of the doors to deflect scratches and dents in those nasty Parisian parking lots. It’s rumored that France’s PSA Group, which also makes Peugeot, is plotting to re-enter the United States market (the last Peugeot left an American dealership in 1991). Fingers crossed.
VW T-Roc R. I fell in love with the T-Roc when I first saw it, in blazing tangerine paint, at the Frankfurt motor show a couple of years ago. Sitting on a show floor overloaded with bulbous crossovers and S.U.V.s, the T-Roc (terrible name) was special. Now comes the high-performance R version: 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, slightly more than what the Golf R hatch makes in the United States. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is standard, as is all-wheel drive. Bet five bucks the T-Roc will never be photographed under the Brooklyn Bridge, although VW says it will introduce a subcompact crossover, slotted below the Tiguan, in America in 2020.
Lotus Elise. A British sports car? There has to be one on this list. While some models from this classic British brand are available in the United States, including the Evora, the hyper-lightweight Elise has been off limits for us for several years because it doesn’t comply with airbag rules, among other safety standards. But you can at least look at one and, if you’re lucky, drive one through the South Downs or Scottish Highlands. Yellow is the preferred color.
