What If GM Built a Chevrolet Blazer SS With a Corvette Engine?
The Chevrolet Blazer is a talented, well-rounded crossover. The Camaro of SUVs, as we’ve dubbed it, has sporty looks and an aggressive demeanor—especially in sleek RS guise. We recently spent some time in the 2020 Blazer RS and came away impressed with its fresh interior and competence on the road, but we also think there’s room for a little bit more.
On the road, the Blazer RS felt like a willing partner and it was capable enough to handle whatever I threw at it—within reason, of course. I even thought it could handle a swoopy mountain pass if it really had to. Even though it doesn’t have the outright power to demolish SUV lap records, we think the hypothetical Blazer SS could be the X3M fighter Chevrolet never knew it wanted to build.
Thanks to the 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque provided by its 3.6-liter V-6, the Blazer RS with AWD already sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and runs the quarter-mile in 14.7 seconds at 95.5 mph. That’s not bad for a 4,274-pound crossover. In our testing, it stopped from 60 mph in 126 feet, and its best figure eight lap was a respectable 27.1 seconds at 0.65 g average.
We’d like to see improvements in all of those areas for our hypothetical Blazer SS. It doesn’t even need to be its own special model, and we think something from the Chevy parts bin would work perfectly. Hear us out: A transversely mounted version of the LT1 V-8 from the outgoing C7 Corvette and current sixth-gen Camaro paired to Chevy’s latest nine-speed front-drive transaxle sounds like the perfect way to motivate a performance-oriented Blazer SS. Paddle shifters, absent from current Blazers, would be a must.
Channeling all of that power would require Chevrolet’s best front-drive-based all-wheel drive system, hardened to handle the torque. We’d like to hope Chevrolet would spring for a fancier system like the electronically controlled center diff in the Subaru WRX STI or an on-demand twin-clutch rear axle like a Ford Focus RS, capable of torque vectoring and creating a rear torque bias.
Realistically, though, Chevrolet doesn’t have any such system in its arsenal and would need to spend substantial money to develop one. An on-demand coupling is probably the most likely as it would improve fuel economy, but we think a vehicle like this ought to have full-time all-wheel drive, so we’d prefer a helical center differential at minimum with a fixed front-rear torque split.
This will help the Blazer feel more characterful, and when combined with brake-based torque vectoring (limited-slip differentials are also expensive) will help give it much better traction out of corners. We also wouldn’t mind seeing slightly wider front and rear track widths to give better overall grip, and maybe a few tweaks to the body—like quad exhausts and an even more aggressive front end.
Pair all of that with some other performance goodies like bigger brakes, uprated suspension components, lighter wheels, and stickier tires and you’ve got yourself a real performance machine. All of this would help dial out some of the understeer the Blazer suffers from when you’re really pushing it, and the power from the V-8 would make it significantly quicker than the RS in a straight line.
Even though this idea is born entirely of a hypothetical conversation I was having with fellow editors Alex Nishimoto and Zach Gale, Nishimoto pointed out there is some historical precedent here. Remember the Chevrolet Impala SS? In 2006, Chevy took an LS-series V-8 (a 5.3-liter version dubbed the LS4) and stuck it sideways under the hood of its front-wheel-drive family sedan. Even though it wasn’t an SUV, the concept of taking an ordinary family car and dropping in a V-8 (flipped 90 degrees) is something Chevrolet has clearly explored before. The all-aluminum LS4 made 303 hp and 323 lb-ft of torque, and turned the sedate-looking Impala (along with its Monte Carlo SS and Pontiac Grand Prix GXP platform mates) into a real sleeper. According to our colleagues at Hot Rod, the LS4 used a unique low-profile accessory system with a flattened water pump to accomodate the unusual transverse application. It also featured a relocated starter, unique intake manifold, GM’s “Metric” bellhousing pattern, and a slightly shorter crankshaft.
Performance SUVs aren’t some ridiculous fantasy, either. Even since the original X5 M sparked the birth of the segment more than a decade ago, performance SUVs have been coming thick and fast. Mercedes Benz currently offers the GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS with high-powered AMG engines—there are six different variants in total. The Germans currently have a stranglehold on the segment, though.
Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes all make some of the fastest SUVs in the world. Outside of the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus (both of which hail from companies owned by Volkswagen), those four brands have little in the way of competition. But America’s appetite for the big people carriers doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
Ford offers semi-sporty ST versions of both the Explorer and Edge SUVs, too. However, it must be said they’re not full-on, hardcore performance machines and generally aren’t compared to the Germans when it comes to outright performance. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk gets closer, and the upcoming Dodge Durango Hellcat may as well, and with all of that in mind, a hardcore, pumped-up SUV from Chevy seems to make more sense than ever before.
Whether Chevy will execute this idea of ours is entirely up to them, but we’d love to see something faster, meaner, and more exciting from the Blazer. With its sedan offerings shrinking, the Bowtie brand could really benefit from something fast and practical in the lineup.

Ford rozšiřuje nabídku modelů Transit a Tourneo o nové varianty Trail a Active s robustním vzhledem a zvýšenou schopností jízdy mimo zpevněné komunikace. Objednávat je lze již brzy, první vozy budou dodány zákazníkům koncem léta.
Nový Transit Trail a Transit Custom Trail jsou určeny k nasazení v náročnějších provozních podmínkách. Transit Custom je ve variantě Trail vybaven mechanickým samosvorným diferenciálem, zatímco Transit Trail je dostupný s inteligentním pohonem všech kol.
Transit Custom a Tourneo Custom v novém provedení Active pak cílí zejména na soukromé i firemní zákazníky s mnohostranně aktivním životním stylem. Vyznačují se specifickými ochrannými prvky karoserie a na přání mohou být vybaveny mechanickým samosvorným diferenciálem. Exteriér ve stylu SUV dodává těmto modelům na vizuální přitažlivosti, současně však přispívá k praktické využitelnosti mimo zpevněné komunikace.
„Modely Active a Trail demonstrují, jak všestranná umí řada Transit být,“ říká Hans Schep, ředitel divize užitkových vozů ve Ford of Europe. „Pro každého zákazníka se najde Transit, který vyhovuje jeho potřebám, od firem působících mimo dosah zpevněných silnic až po rodiny toužící po automobilu stejně dobrodružném, jako jsou ony samy.“

Nové modely Ford Transit Trail a Transit Custom Trail osloví zejména provozovatele, které jejich práce často zavede mimo asfaltové silnice. Vyznačují se robustním vzhledem a zvýšenou schopností pohybu v terénu.
Spodní části nárazníků i bočních panelů karoserie jsou opatřeny přídavnými černými ochrannými prvky. Rozměrný nápis „Ford“ na matně černé masce chladiče uděluje modelům Trail cílevědomý a neohrožený vzhled, jenž koresponduje s jejich všestranným zaměřením. Celkový dojem podtrhují specifická 16palcová kola z lehké slitiny a loga „Trail“ na předních dveřích. Transit Custom Trail lze objednat se střešními ližinami a postranními nášlapnými plochami.
Záběr pneumatik v nepříznivých podmínkách zvyšují u modelů Trail různá technická řešení.
Transit Trail s pohonem předních kol a Transit Custom Trail jsou sériově osazeny mechanickým samosvorným diferenciálem. Pro Transit Trail lze objednat také inteligentní pohon všech kol.
Mechanický samosvorný diferenciál byl vyvinut ve spolupráci se specializovanou společností Quaife. Automaticky přenáší hnací sílu na to kolo, jež má v daném okamžiku lepší trakci. Transit Trail a Transit Custom díky tomu suverénně zvládají nezpevněné silnice, šotolinové cesty i kluzký povrch. Elektronický stabilizační systém byl přeprogramován takovým způsobem, aby se samosvorným diferenciálem hladce spolupracoval. Stejné technické řešení Ford uplatnil již ve sportovních modelech Focus RS, Fiesta ST a Focus ST z divize Ford Performance a jeho přítomnost nemá žádný negativní vliv na spotřebu paliva a emise CO2.
Transit Trail je k dispozici také s inteligentním pohonem všech kol. Tento systém technicky vychází z varianty se zadním pohonem a v závislosti na aktuální situaci může poslat až 50 procent hnací síly na přední nápravu.
Inteligentní pohon všech kol je v Transitu Trail podporován také přepínatelnými jízdními režimy Kluzký povrch a Bláto/Koleje. Režimy zvyšují jistotu ovládání vozu v různých podmínkách a přepínají se ovladačem na palubní desce. Inteligentní pohon všech kol disponuje funkcí AWD Lock, po jejíž aktivaci se hnací síla dělí mezi přední a zadní kola v pevném poměru 50:50.

Pohon všech kol neomezuje přepravní kapacitu Transitu Trail oproti ekvivalentním modelům s poháněnou zadní nápravou.
Modely Trail disponují rozšířenou vnitřní výbavou včetně celokoženého čalounění sedadel, klimatizace a vyhřívaného čelního okna. Standardně se taktéž dodávají elektricky sklopná zpětná zrcátka nebo automatické světlomety.

Specs Comparison: Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport vs. Chevy Blazer, Honda Passport, and Other Midsize 2-Rows
There are dozens of “midsize” two-row SUVs out there, so to narrow our focus let’s look at four that, like the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, were developed by abbreviating a related three-row SUV. To do this, we’ve rounded up the specs from the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge, Honda Passport, and Nissan Murano entries in this wide-body, two-row SUV class. Within this class, Volkswagen clearly did the least amount of trimming when cutting down its Atlas three-row SUV, leaving the wheelbase of the bigger Atlas unchanged.
Room for People
In terms of calculated passenger volume, despite the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport’s limo-like 117.3-inch wheelbase (longest in this class by 4.5 inches) and overall length (at 2.7 inches over the Nissan) and a width that’s within 0.2 inch of the Honda Passport, its stylish sloping roofline results in a fifth-place ranking in rear headroom. Hence, despite leading the class by 0.3 cubic feet in front space at 58.3, overall passenger volume trails that of the Honda Passport—111.9 to the Honda’s 114.7 cubes. That said, the rear legroom is impressive, though at 40.4 inches, it trails that of the Edge by 0.2 inch. It should be noted that the Murano, while second longest, is the least roomy inside, measuring just 102.9 cubic feet with the Chevy measuring just slightly larger at 107.6 cubic feet.
Room for Stuff
The Cross Sport’s long bodywork pays off in class-leading cargo volume when the 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks are down: 77.8 cubic feet. That just edges out the boxier Honda Passport’s 77.5 cubic feet. But here again, the sloping roofline and raked rear window cost VW the lead in volume behind the rear seat—40.4 cubic feet versus the Passport’s 41.2.
Maneuverability
Our long-term VW Atlas suffered a steering malfunction that limited how far the wheels could turn, resulting in a nearly nautical turning circle. Let’s presume that was an anomaly, as the Cross Sport boasts the tightest turning circle, at 38.1 feet—an unexpected and impressive result from a vehicle with the widest track and longest wheelbase. The extra length and girth might cause some trepidation when parking in tight spaces, but VW offers a crisp 360-degree camera view and parking assist to ease tension in such situations.
Off-Road Readiness
Fearless prediction: Nobody will convert an Atlas Cross Sport for overlanding. Nevertheless, in this class, it’s the second-best prepared for light off-roading, following the overtly adventurous looking Honda Passport. Its 8.0 inches of ground clearance and 20.9-degree approach/26.7-degree departure angles trail those of the Honda by modest amounts. Properly equipped, the Atlas Cross Sport can also tow the same 5,000 pounds of leisure gear, just like the Honda.
On Road Performance
The long-wheelbase Atlas Cross Sport is likely to weigh in a bit heftier than its rivals, if the notoriously optimistic factory specs hold true. Hence, we anticipate that the Chevy Blazer, with a 3.6-liter/nine-speed drivetrain combo, will dice with the 3.5-liter/nine-cog Honda Passport for supremacy when it comes to stoplight sprinting (6.1 or 6.2 seconds for these two, as compared with an estimated 7.3 for the Atlas Cross Sport. The Camaro of SUVs is also likely to attract most of the handling accolades, and smart gamblers would steer clear of betting on the large, hefty Cross Sport to win any fuel-economy contests.
