TOP 20: THE BEST VEHICLES FOR THE FAMILY IN 2020 ACCORDING TO PARENTS MAGAZINE
Tumblr media
Once again this year, Parents magazine gets wet by naming its best choices of vehicles for the family. Unlike last year, however, the publication is expanding its list of recommended vehicles to 20 (instead of 10 in 2019). Indeed, the magazine’s list this year includes a few additional categories, with the utility segment making up the majority of the models listed, unsurprisingly.
The magazine also considered the safety assessments carried out by the American institute NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). What’s more, the ‘family’ angle of the top 20 requires a test with child seat expert Abbie Patterson. Patterson, owner of the Super Car Seat Geek company, has tested all types of child booster seats in more than 50 car models.
Finally, automotive columnist Rob Stumpf, took the wheel of the vehicles in the child seat test to evaluate braking, steering, acceleration and a host of other parameters.
Without further ado, here’s the list of the 20 best family vehicles for 2020 according to Parents magazine.
Minivans – Best Value: Kia Sedona
In the minivan segment, Kia Sedona takes home the honours with the best value for money because of its more affordable price in its basic livery. However, the magazine notes that it is not possible to secure three child seats in the second row in the least expensive model. The automatic transmission (from 6 to 8 gears since the 2019 model year) is good for smooth shifting.
Minivans – Best Green Choice: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
Chrysler’s representative in the ultra-family minivan segment is currently the only option (in the North American market) marketed with a charging cable. This rechargeable hybrid powertrain lowers average fuel consumption without penalizing performance, while the government rebate is not to be ignored here either. The Pacifica Hybrid will have to watch its back, as we already know that the next Toyota Sienna will be available with a hybrid powertrain.
Minivans – Best choice for large families: Honda Odyssey
Honda’s Odyssey is also an excellent choice, especially since the manufacturer has decided to offer its 10-speed automatic transmission on all trim levels. As reported in the magazine, the versatility of the Odyssey is unparalleled, as the minivan can accommodate up to six child seats at the same time. It’s also the most fun to drive.
Minivans – Best in all weather conditions: Toyota Sienna
Toyota’s Sienna retains its competitive edge once again this year with its optional all-wheel drive system. This increased traction is undoubtedly an asset when road conditions are more difficult, as is its powerful V6 engine, but the Sienna will have to count the Chrysler Pacifica among its direct rivals next year, the American manufacturer having already confirmed the arrival of a four-wheel drive version of its Pacifica.
Three-row SUV – Best Value: Volkswagen Atlas
When the German automaker launched the development of its three-row SUV, it clearly had North America as its target. The magazine was especially seduced by the affordable price of the SUV in its most accessible version.
Three-row SUV – Better Redesign: Toyota Highlander
The change of model for 2020 does him the greatest good, the former Highlander which had been in service since model year 2014. While the publication praises the new design, it’s also in terms of handling that the Toyota representative has improved, especially in terms of suspension. There’s also the availability of a hybrid version, which isn’t widely available in this group.
Three-row SUV – Best Choice for Large Families: Subaru Ascent
The Subaru Ascent joined the three-row seating party for SUVs about a year ago. Here, the fact that all the vehicle’s liveries are equipped with constant-drive all-wheel drive is meant to be an advantage over the rest of the pack, while the publication pointed out that there are 19 (!) cup holders on board.
Three-row SUV – Best Quiet Ride: Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot looks almost Acura inside, not only because of its full equipment, but also because of its quiet ride. In fact, the Parents magazine article even goes so far as to compare the Pilot to the Honda Odyssey because the SUV is so comfortable. Unlike the minivan, however, the Pilot still offers the tandem of six- and nine-speed automatic transmissions. In this case, the older of the two (the six-speed one) isn’t necessarily a bad choice!
Three-row SUV – Best safety technologies: Nissan Pathfinder
Aging, the Nissan Pathfinder still seems capable of seducing a publication that mainly observes a vehicle’s family characteristics. Here, the safety systems are convincing, as is that horn blast heard after every drive where one of the rear doors has been opened before or while driving. This device reminds the driver that he or she may have a child – or even a pet – strapped to the rear.
Three-row SUV – Best Design: Mazda CX-9
Mazda is certainly not a brand with countless financial resources, but on the other hand, the design of the most recent seasons seems to appeal to the general public. In fact, despite its introduction in 2017, Mazda’s largest SUV has not aged a single wrinkle. The CX-9’s driving pleasure should not be forgotten either.
Two-row SUV – Best Quiet Ride: Buick Envision
The three-shield division has long been associated with the silence of its interior. The Buick Envision, assembled in China, is no exception to this rule thanks to the noise reduction system.
Parents magazine mentions the excellence of the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, but this mill is reserved for the more upscale versions. In the other trim levels, the driver has to deal with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and a six-speed transmission only.
Two-row SUV – Best steering system: Chevrolet Equinox
It’s true that the Chevrolet Equinox comes with a reputation for being poorly assembled and less durable than average. But since its redesign for the 2018 model year, the compact SUV does much better in terms of driving experience, and even overall quality. Parents magazine found the Chevrolet’s steering to be particularly precise, while its powertrain is powerful enough.
Two-row SUV – Better space for child seats: Ford Edge
When it comes to space for child seats, the Ford Edge is second to none, according to the publication. This allows for three seats, a rarity in the two-row SUV segment. The Ford Edge is also one of the most comfortable.
Two-Row SUV – Best Redesign : GMC Terrain
Best redesign award for two-row SUVs goes… drum roll – at GMC Terrain! Oddly enough, the redesign was completed for the 2018 model year at the same time as the Chevrolet Equinox, but hey, it’s the magazine’s choice! The article also mentions the more comfortable suspension on the Denali model.
Two-Row SUV – Best Green Choice: Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
Two-Row SUV – Best choice for long trips: Subaru Forester
The Subaru manufacturer is often named on this list by Parents magazine. The Forester would be the ideal vehicle for expeditions, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive, roof rack and exemplary comfort. You could even add that the Forester’s fuel consumption has been very good for the past few years, a fact made possible by the adoption of a continuously variable transmission.
Sedans – Best Value for a Hybrid: Honda Accord Hybrid
In the arguments listed by Parents magazine, the Honda Accord Hybrid sedan doesn’t cost much more than the regular model, while trunk space is no longer handicapped by a battery stowed behind the rear seat. The Accord Hybrid is also not an unpleasant car to drive.
Sedans – Best in all weather conditions: Subaru Legacy
The manufacturer has made it its hobbyhorse: four-wheel drive guarantees superior traction in winter. The Nissan Altima has joined the Legacy’s direct rivals with an AWD system, but it’s not a permanent type like Subaru’s.
The redesign for 2020 has certainly helped in this case, the sedan can now be ordered with a more energetic 4-cylinder turbocharged flatbed engine.
Sedans – Best sports car: Nissan Maxima
This was its angle of attack when it was redesigned for the 1989 model year in North America. The Four Door Sports Car still stands out from its peers today because of its relatively dynamic driving dynamics. However, Toyota’s effort is worth mentioning with its Avalon XSE, a large sedan that is surprisingly fun to drive. In the United States, there’s also a TRD livery!
Sedans – Best Hybrid Sports Car: Toyota Camry Hybrid
Still, it’s surprising to see that the hybrid versions are now the sportiest in Toyota’s lineup. Even the Camry is no exception to this rule. The manufacturer continues to offer a V6 engine for the more conservative among us, but we have to admit that the hybrid leaning of the mid-size sedan is at least worth a try.

2020 Toyota Highlander Best Trims: Our Dream Builds of This New Family SUV
The 2020 Toyota Highlander offers tons of options—and we’re not talking about illuminated door sills or blacked-out badges. After our first experience with the redesigned family hauler, we’re … lukewarm about the changes Toyota made. More testing will help fill out our impressions, but we don’t yet see the 2020 Highlander as a Kia Telluride-beater, even though the former will still dominate the sales charts.
So you’re sure you want a 2020 Toyota Highlander? Keep reading to find out how two MotorTrend editors who’ve already driven the new SUV would build their versions.
How I’d Spec It: 2020 Toyota Highlander Limited AWD—Miguel Cortina
With Toyota going premium for the top two Highlander trims, the Limited is the one to pick if your budget is a little tighter. After sampling the LE, Limited, and Platinum models during my recent 2020 Toyota Highlander drive, I’d recommend the Limited AWD V-6 version, which offers a good combination of premium materials, technology, and the 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Although the Highlander’s hybrid engine is remarkable with its up-to-36 mpg and 600-mile range, I’d argue that the V-6 feels punchier and more agile, which is especially important when you have a full crew on board.
Besides the added power, the Limited trim comes with 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, perforated leather seats, wood-like interior trim, ambient lighting, and a JBL audio system with 11 speakers, which sounds crisp and clear. I’d skip the 12.3-inch touchscreen (a $1,050 option) and keep the 8.0-inch display; it’s already big enough and comes with pretty much the same things as the bigger screen.
More on the 2020 Highlander’s interior here.
Although you can opt for a bench seat for the second row at no cost, I’d go with the captain’s chairs, as they are more comfortable and look better.
The Blizzard Pearl exterior color adds $425, but it’s worth it when you see the bold lines on the hood and sheetmetal in person. Per the online configurator, my Highlander would come out to $47,145, which isn’t terribly expensive considering all of the equipment, interior materials, and technology you get.
How I’d Spec It: 2020 Toyota Highlander XLE AWD Hybrid—Zach Gale
Rarely these days do you encounter a truly unique advantage, but that’s exactly what Toyota has—for now—with the 2020 Highlander Hybrid. The model was once easy to dismiss thanks to a V-6 engine that couldn’t provide enough fuel efficiency, but that’s changed. The new model only has four cylinders, but thanks to its hybrid system providing 243 total horsepower, it feels plenty responsive in everyday driving. Miguel is probably right—with a carload of people, the hybrid may feel slightly underpowered, but I’d argue that it wouldn’t be quite so bad.
Read our 2020 Highlander Hybrid review here.
If I’m shopping for a three-row SUV, horsepower isn’t at the top of my list. Anything that can save me time might be, though. And the hybrid’s biggest advantage (besides the obvious plus of better mpgs) is its driving range. No matter how you slice it—by overall city, highway, or combined city/highway mileage—the hybrid will take you way farther on one tank of gas before you need to stop again. OK, I’ll make that more accurate: When you stop for another bathroom and snack break, you won’t necessarily need to get fuel, too.
So why get a 2020 Highlander XLE Hybrid? The Limited is tempting, and I completely understand Miguel’s choice. However, I really, really want that 12.3-inch screen. The problem is, the only way to get it is to first upgrade to the Limited trim and then add a $1,050 package. If you compare the XLE to the Limited with that package, we’re talking about around $5,000 for a cool screen with good functionality, attractive 20-inch wheels, a better sound system, and the other benefits Miguel mentioned. I want those features, but I don’t $5,000-want-them, you know?
My 2020 Highlander XLE still gets heated front seats, a standard-size moonroof, and LED headlights. I wouldn’t get the L because I’m too lazy to close the liftgate by myself (a power liftgate and driver’s seat start at the LE trim). I might try the LE, but I’m not a fan of the plain, cheap-looking door handles—the XLE feels slightly more premium. And with the beige interior color, I like the way Toyota has layered brown on most of the upper dash. With the carpet mat package and the hybrid powertrain that’s just $1,400 on every trim starting with the LE, my Highlander would cost $44,038 (the 2020 Highlander is on sale now, and the hybrid arrives in February).

2021 Toyota Sienna minivan goes hybrid-only with a radical new design
Toyota’s Sienna minivan has been given a radical, bullet-train-inspired makeover.
Toyota
It’s been over a decade since the current, third-generation Toyota Sienna minivan debuted, and in recent years, it’s grown a bit stale, overtaken by newer rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. But Toyota on Monday officially unveiled the new 2021 Sienna, which has been redesigned from the ground up and is gunning for the minivan segment crown. (See how the 2021 Sienna compares with its rivals in our Sienna, Odyssey and Pacifica spec comparison.)
This fourth-generation Sienna was designed by CALTY’s Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, design teams, but it looks wholly Japanese. Toyota describes the new Sienna as “bold, sexy and provocative,” and says the front end’s massive grille was inspired by the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train. More than anything, it reminds me of the awesome, boxy, overstyled JDM minivans that we don’t get in the US.
I don’t think the Sienna looks as outright aggressive as other recent Toyota models, and that’s a good thing. The bulging rear fender is lifted from the Highlander but looks more natural and soft here, and there are a number of nice, subtle surfacing changes like the lines coming off the LED headlights. The rear is a bit more angular, with slim LED taillights and a lot of creases, and the tailgate has a slight whiff of a ducktail spoiler. An XSE model (the one shown in red) gets a sportier body kit, dark 20-inch wheels and different interior trimmings.
2020 Toyota Sienna vs. 2021 Toyota Sienna
2020 Toyota Sienna 2021 Toyota Sienna Engine 3.5-liter V6 2.5-liter I4 hybrid Power 296 hp 243 hp (net) Torque 263 lb-ft N/A Transmission 8-speed auto CVT Fuel economy 21 mpg combined 33 mpg combined (est.) Length 200.6 in 203.7 in Width 78.1 in 78.5 in Height 68.9 in 68.5 in
Toyota gave the interior a radical overhaul, too. The automaker says minivan owners don’t want to feel like they’re driving a bus, so the wide dashboard is more similar in design to the brand’s SUVs. It’s got a high-mounted infotainment display and a nice mix of colors and materials, and it looks more upscale overall. The biggest change is a huge “bridge console” between the front seats that’s connected to the dash, which Toyota says is positioned for better ergonomics and comfort. That console offers cup holders, a wireless phone charger and some additional storage compartments, while the open area underneath is large enough to fit a purse or a backpack.
But I’m most interested in the second row of seats. The new Sienna has available as an option Super Long Slide captain’s chairs, which can slide up to 25 inches fore and aft. These reclining seats can be equipped with built-in ottomans, too. Lower trims get three-across seats in the second row with a stowable middle seat. On the top trims the seats are covered in leather with both heating and ventilation for the front two occupants, while the second row can be heated. (The second-row seats aren’t removable and can’t fold, though, due to integrated side airbags.)
Now playing: Watch this: 2021 Toyota Sienna comes standard with outrageous looks,…
3: 04
New platform, new powertrain
The new Sienna rides on Toyota’s modular TNGA-K platform, the same one underpinning cars like the Camry, Avalon and Highlander. Compared with the 2020 model, the new generation is 3.1 inches longer overall and rides on a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, and it’s slightly wider and a little lower in height. Toyota worked to make the new Sienna quieter and less affected by external vibrations, as well.
For the first time, the Sienna is available as a hybrid — and only as a hybrid. The sole powertrain is the same basic setup found in other Toyota hybrid models like the RAV4, using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a battery pack mounted under the front seats. The Sienna’s hybrid system puts out 243 total horsepower, 53 hp less than the current model’s V6 engine. But power isn’t the point: Toyota says it estimates the 2021 Sienna will get 33 miles per gallon combined, way better than the 21 mpg that the 2020 Sienna gets. It also bests the Odyssey and Pacifica, both of which use V6 engines and get 22 mpg combined.
Toyota wanted the Sienna’s interior to feel less like that of a bus.
Toyota
Not giving the Sienna a plug is intentional, Toyota says, and there are no plans for a PHEV version. A lot of Sienna owners are repeat customers, so the new one needed to feel familiar, with no need to plug it in to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition to the standard three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, the 2021 Sienna has a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for all hybrid components including the battery.
All-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels, with the system using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels instead of a traditional transfer case and driveshaft (no word on if it adds any extra horsepower). It’s able to send up to 80% of torque to the rear wheels, and Toyota says the all-wheel-drive model is more agile in the corners. I expect the AWD Sienna to get slightly worse fuel economy than the FWD model, though Toyota hasn’t released official numbers.
2021 Toyota Sienna design was inspired by Japanese bullet trains
See all photos
The 2021 Sienna has multiple driving modes including one for EV-only operation (for very short distances at low speeds), and there’s an adjustable regenerative braking feature that mimics the act of downshifting, ideal for hilly terrain. A new Predictive Efficient Drive feature remembers driving habits, road conditions and repeated routes to optimize when the battery is charged by the hybrid system. This feature is also found in the new 2021 Venza hybrid.
Like the current Sienna, the new one is able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, and it has an available 120-volt AC outlet and 1,500-watt inverter to power gear and accessories. Toyota will offer accessories from Yakima that have been designed for the Sienna including a bike rack, cross bars and a rooftop carrier. Who needs an SUV when you have a minivan?
I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this the best-looking Sienna ever.
Toyota
Segment-first tech and features
More than anything, minivans are all about interior functionality, and the 2021 Sienna has it in spades. There are as many as 18 cup holders, six more than the maximum offered by the 2020 model. Standard equipment for every Sienna includes power sliding doors, auto up/down windows, three-zone automatic climate control and second-row sunshades. Climbing the trim level ladder — LE, Limited, XSE and Platinum — adds features like kick-activated sliding doors and power tailgate, four-zone auto climate control, a sunroof, sunshades for the third row and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel that’s also heated. The Limited trim gets a built-in vacuum and storage box, while the Platinum replaces the box with a refrigerator.
The “base” infotainment setup is a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM capability, six speakers and seven USB ports. Moving up in the trim levels adds HD Radio, onboard Wi-Fi, navigation and a 1,200-watt JBL audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer. There’s an available 11.6-inch rear entertainment system with 1080p resolution and an HDMI input, a remote controller and a pair of wireless headphones. A 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster can show hybrid system info, while an optional 10-inch head-up display can project navigation info, as well.
The new Sienna is longer, lower and wider than before.
Toyota
Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver assist features is standard across the board, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Every 2021 Sienna has 10 airbags, including curtain airbags for all three rows and the aforementioned side airbags built into the first and second-row seats. A digital rearview mirror and a 360-degree camera with a curb view are new options, and there’s also a rear-seat occupant reminder system.
Toyota hasn’t released any pricing yet, but the Sienna will go on sale toward the end of the year and will continue to be built at Toyota’s plant in Indiana. It will have to face still-tough competition in the form of the face-lifted Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey and an upcoming next-gen Kia Sedona. (See how it stacks up against those competitors in our spec comparison story.) But, at least for now, the 2021 Sienna seems poised to be a major contender.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Review: Why It Now Makes More Sense and Cents
Doubling sales is a daunting challenge, but we suspect Toyota will have no trouble achieving its targets with the new 2020 Highlander Hybrid. Reimagined on the new fourth-generation three-row SUV, the Highlander Hybrid cuts its cylinder count from six to four, and in the process transforms from a curiosity to a family machine with appeal to environmentalists as well as folks simply trying to save some money.
As with almost every hybrid available today, the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid carries a price premium over the standard engine. Toyota has simplified the math: If you want the hybrid, it’s yours for $1,400 more on every FWD and AWD model on the LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum trims. With “just” 243 combined-system horsepower on the new hybrid, it’s down 63 hp from the 2019 model. But here’s the thing about family-oriented three-row hybrid crossovers: Almost no one will care about that reduction in power.
2020 Toyota Highlander base prices range from $39,320 for a base LE FWD to $51,320 for a loaded Platinum AWD model.
Because on the road, the 2020 Highlander Hybrid feels responsive and plenty powerful, up to a point. Around town, the 2.5-liter I-4-based powertrain and its CVT are always there to provide the response you need, though it does feel like it runs out of juice toward the end of a highway onramp. Everywhere else, though, the Highlander gets the job done.
Those who stick with the Highlander’s standard engine get a 295-hp V-6 like the one in the previous-generation model. The turbo-less engine is known for providing smooth—and as Toyota’s engineering team pointed out—relatively linear power for a predictable response every time. Mated to an eight-speed automatic, the more sensitive among us may feel a slight head toss from gear to gear—it’s nothing out of the ordinary for conventional automatic transmissions.
Then again, head-toss isn’t something you’ll feel in the hybrid model. Instead, the 2020 Highlander Hybrid’s drawbacks start with the engine noise from that 2.5-liter I-4. Although it’s not as bad as we’ve experienced in Toyota RAV4s that use a version of the same engine, we still would like the engine to be slightly quieter. At least in the models we drove, we also sensed a more aggressive regenerative braking system in a FWD model than the AWD model—though your mileage may vary on production models driven at a dealership. For the FWD model, what this means is that when lifting off the brake and accelerator pedals, the car begins to slow down more quickly.
As we mentioned in our review of the entire 2020 Toyota Highlander line—read it here—we’d also like to see the automaker do a better job gamifying the hybrid driving experience through an additional instrument cluster and infotainment screen display with more info about the current drive. Most folks will just drive the Highlander Hybrid like a normal car, and it was during such driving that we discovered the SUV’s most delightful surprise.
The Highlander Hybrids we drove featured brakes with excellent feel for a hybrid. Sometimes, hybrid cars and SUVs will stop abruptly at the end of the pedal’s travel, but that wasn’t the case with the Toyotas we drove. Brake-feel and a compromise in interior space used to be two of the primary reasons to avoid hybrids, but those excuses don’t apply to this Toyota. The hybrid features the same interior space as the V-6 model, and if you notice how high the floor is in the third row—or how little space is back there—that’s true of all 2020 Highlanders as well as a few of its competitors.
Toyota expects EPA-rated fuel economy to come in at 36/35 mpg city/highway for the 2020 Highlander LE hybrid in FWD and AWD forms, 36/35 mpg for FWD hybrids in higher trims, and 35/34 mpg for AWD hybrids in higher trims. That’s impressive for a nearly 200-inch SUV even before you consider the V-6’s 20-21/27-29 mpg fuel economy. Keeping in mind the hybrid’s $1,400 price premium, it won’t take many years to earn that money back. If your mileage comes anywhere close to those mid-30 estimates above, you’re also looking at a 600-mile driving range between visits to the gas station. Nice.
At the moment, the three-row hybrid space is barren. Nissan no longer sells a hybridized Pathfinder, Honda may one day sell a Pilot hybrid, and the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in is much smaller than the Toyota. That leaves the Ford Explorer, which takes a performance-first approach with its V-6 engine, 318 combined-system hp, higher price, and lower fuel economy.
But you don’t need 300-plus horsepower, do you? If that describes you, try the 2020 Highlander Hybrid before you drive out in a Highlander V-6. Although we’d rather drive a Kia Telluride—MotorTrend’s 2020 SUV of the Year—than a six-cylinder Highlander, that excellent Kia lacks a hybrid option and only provides mid-pack fuel economy. With a price premium of only $1,400 and better fuel economy than before, the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is worth a look.

2020 Toyota Highlander Starting Price Rises $2,770 to $35,720
Toyota has released pricing details on its family-friendly staple, the Highlander midsize crossover. The redesigned 2020 Toyota Highlander is priced from $35,720, making it more expensive than key competitors when you compare base configurations. That price also represents an increase of $2,770 over the base 2019 Toyota Highlander, which came with a 2.7-liter I-4 that’s no longer available on the new-generation Highlander. Compared to a 2019 Toyota Highlander LE with the 3.5-liter V-6, the 2020 Highlander’s starting price is only up $720, however.
The new Highlander’s starting price is much higher than the 2020 Honda Pilot ($32,645), 2020 Nissan Pathfinder ($32,775), and 2020 Ford Explorer ($32,765). The Chevrolet Traverse, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and others join the list of SUVs with lower starting prices. All-wheel-drive Highlanders start at $37,320.
Fortunately, the Highlander boasts plenty of standard features to go along with the price tag. These include an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone automatic climate control, eight cupholders, four bottle holders, eight-way power adjustable driver seat, and four-way power adjustable front passenger seat. The base model has eight seats, but the next-level LE trim comes standard with seven seats, with the extra seat optional. This trim is priced from $37,920.
As we previously reported, the standard engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 with 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. Hybrid models combine a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors for an excellent 36 mpg in combined city and highway driving. But for the improved fuel economy, you’ll have to pay at least $39,320. This gets you the base Highlander Hybrid LE model; AWD starts at $40,920.
XLE models sit in the middle of the lineup, priced from $40,720. For standard leather-trimmed seats, you’ll have to opt for at least the Limited grade. This model, priced from $44,770, also boasts heated and ventilated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel, ambient interior LED lighting, an 11-speaker sound system, and other upgrades. Add the hybrid powertrain, and you’re looking at a minimum of $46,170. But Platinum models sit at the top of the lineup, with a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, a silver-painted front bumper and rear fascia, and unique 20-inch wheels. Platinum prices start at $47,970, but skyrocket to $51,320 on the most expensive hybrid AWD version.
The top-trim Pilot is similarly expensive, even without the hybrid powertrain, getting into the $50,000 range. Although the top Nissan Pathfinder stays in the $40,000s, the Explorer can cost a pretty penny. The Explorer Limited Hybrid goes for $53,475, while the very top-trim Explorer Platinum is an eye-watering $59,445.
The 2020 Toyota Highlander goes on sale this month, and the Highlander Hybrid arrives in February.
