2020 Subaru Legacy review: A feature-rich sedan with a vanilla wrapper

It won’t win any fashion contests, but the Legacy’s real beauty is found within.

Despite not looking all that different, the 2020 Subaru Legacy pictured here is a brand-new sedan. And while it might not stir emotions with its design, those who look beneath the conservative sheet metal will discover a spacious interior chock full of new technology, not to mention a more robust chassis that makes the Legacy much nicer to drive.

The 2020 Legacy rides on Subaru’s new global platform that also underpins the Ascent, Crosstrek, Forester, Impreza and Outback. This stiffer, stronger frame forms the bones of a sedan that’s about the same size as before, with a 108.3-inch wheelbase.

For those hoping the stiffer platform translates to tighter, more responsive handling, I’m sorry to say that’s not the case. Tossing the Legacy Sport into curves, you’ll experience some dive under braking and a bit of controlled roll at turn in. The car’s road-holding abilities are just OK through bends, but pushing it moderately hard results in howls from the 18-inch Yokohama Avid GT BluEarth tires. Even with the most aggressive Sport Sharp drive mode activated, the Legacy’s steering is numb off center, though weight builds progressively as you turn. The brakes boast strong initial bite at the top of the pedal stroke and are easy to modulate.

Where the Legacy really shines, though, is in the ride comfort department. The softer-sprung suspension and 50-series sidewall tires are great for comfy jogs around town, smoothing out impacts from bumps and ruts along the way.

Updated base and new turbo engine options

The 2020 Legacy has a new 2.4-liter turbo engine option that replaces the old boxer-six. Rated at 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, it’s the same turbocharged flat-four you’ll find in the Ascent and Outback.

The 2.5-liter flat-four should return 35 mpg on the highway with all-wheel drive.

My Sport trim, however, rocks an updated version of Subaru’s 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer-four with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft, mated to a continuously variable transmission and standard all-wheel drive. In the Sport Sharp setting, the engine delivers adequate grunt to get the Legacy hustling up to speed for highway merging. With the car in the default Intelligent mode, however, and acceleration is leisurely at best.

The Legacy’s CVT does a fairly seamless job of switching between ratios so the engine won’t annoyingly buzz like mad during wide-open throttle applications. Opting to change ratios yourself via the steering wheel paddles can be done, too, but the responses are so frustratingly muted that it’s best to let the computers handle “shifting.”

As for fuel economy, the base drivetrain setup returns an EPA-estimated 27 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. That’s not shabby considering the Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive.

The cabin is comfortable and cleanly styled.

Clean styling with fresh tech

The Legacy is unquestionably understated compared to more fashionable midsize sedans like the latest Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6 and Nissan Altima. Even with the Sport model’s additional touches like its unique grille, black mirror caps, black wheels and trunk spoiler, the car simply gets lost in the crowd. Then again, if you prefer to fly under the radar, this might be the sedan for you.

Things do get more interesting inside, at least. The Legacy’s cabin is airy with a lot of glass letting in oodles of natural light. There’s generous room for passengers up front or in back, with the latter gaining an additional 1.4 inches of legroom compared to the old Legacy. The interior has a relatively straightforward design and everything is built from high-quality materials with leather-wrapped, soft-touch and nicely stitched surfaces throughout. Even the hard-plastic portions feel sturdy and are nicely finished. The seats are cushy, there are numerous cubbies to stash things and the trunk, with 15.1 cubic feet of space, will swallow just about anything you throw at it.

The 11.6-inch display is colorful and easy to use.

There’s a massive, 11.6-inch center touchscreen housing the Subaru Multimedia Plus infotainment system. It’s packed full of goodies such as a TomTom navigation system, Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio and Bluetooth. While those occupy the middle portion of the display, the bottom houses climate adjustments like fan speed, vent settings and three-stage heated front seats. For the most part, I like the intuitive infotainment interface. It’s got big, clearly labeled icons and quickly swaps pages between different menu screens. Thankfully, Subaru doesn’t put everything in the touchscreen, with a couple of knobs and a few hard buttons on the side to adjust radio volume, tuning and cabin temperature.

On the driver-assistance technology front, every Legacy comes standard with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist with lane-centering and pedestrian detection. My test car is also outfitted with available blind-spot monitoring, reverse automatic braking and lane-change assist that all work as advertised.

How I’d spec it

After spending a week with the serviceable, but slightly underwhelming base engine, my ideal Subaru Legacy would have to have the turbo. I’d go with the Limited XT that begins at $35,095, including $900 for destination. With options like heated seats, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert standard, I’d leave it at that and be happy as a clam. It’s a fair amount more than the $30,090 car reviewed here, but trust me, if you can swing the turbo, get it.

The Legacy offers solid all-wheel-drive value.

All-wheel drive value play

Midsize sedan entries offering all-wheel drive aren’t as sparse as before with the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry now available with this tech, though the Legacy remains the only one in the category with it standard. And with its $23,645 base price, the Subaru is the most affordable option if you are on the hunt for a midsize sedan with power going to all four wheels. To get all-wheel drive in the Altima you’ll have to part with at least $26,575, while the Camry will set you back $27,365 to start.

Yes, the Legacy lacks standout style and isn’t a hoot behind the wheel, but it’s a very well-rounded, comfortable sedan, packed with tech and features a spacious cabin at an affordable price point. It won’t set hearts ablaze, but those are nevertheless some strong merits to stand on.

Honda Cars India starts production of new City sedan

New Delhi: Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), on Tuesday has announced that it has commenced production of fifth generation Honda City sedan at the company's Greater Noida plant in Uttar Pradesh.

As the automaker claims, Honda City is one of its most successful cars in India with high brand equity. It was first introduced in India back in January 1998 and later launched as 2nd generation in November 2003. The third generation model came in September 2008, while fourth generation City was launched in January 2014.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is an almost perfect mid-range sedan. It has excellent road manners and technical features that you won't find in any other car in this price range. While the stuff on the dash is impressive, it's not the stuff under the hood. The engines available at the start are only sufficient.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is expected to be available in June in Blue, SEL and Limited versions. Our test car was the top-limited model, which offers all important technical functions, including a digital instrument cluster, a digital key smartphone control and a solar roof, with which the battery can be charged. Hyundai hasn't released any prices yet, but expects the hybrid model to offer a premium over the standard Sonata, priced between $ 24,000 and $ 34,000.

During our time with the sonata, we noticed that Hyundai still has a few tricks up its sleeve. Is better gasoline performance the missing part of the Sonata puzzle?

Design and interior

You have to have a keen eye to see the difference between the Sonata Hybrid and the standard sonata. The differences are limited to a new grille, wheels and rear spoiler. Even these changes were made for aerodynamic efficiency rather than aesthetic reasons. Hyundai was already satisfied with the existing Sonata exterior design.

"It's not about making an environmentally friendly vehicle declaration. Overall, it's about making a great design statement," said Scott Margason, head of product planning at Hyundai Motor America, to Digital Trends.

After all, the sonata looked quite extroverted. Designers gave it a slimmer profile than the average sedan, as well as the trick “Hidden Lighting Lamps”, which turn the bonnet into a laser light show. These additional lighting elements extend back from the headlights and, when switched off, fit into the chrome trim of the vehicle.

Despite an additional battery, according to Hyundai, the Sonata Hybrid has the same trunk as the standard Sonata. This also results in more trunk space than the Toyota Camry Hybrid, but less than the Honda Accord Hybrid. The Sonata Hybrid also has more front and rear leg room than the Camry and Accord, but the Japanese hybrids offer significantly more rear leg room.

The driver's seat of the Sonata Hybrid is a great place. The touchscreen of the dashboard and the storage compartments of the center console are perfectly positioned, the steering wheel is just the right size and the car offers an excellent view to the outside.

Technology, infotainment and driver assistance

The standard infotainment setup includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Limited models get a 10.25-inch touchscreen as well as a digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a head-up display. The screen graphics are crisp and clear, and the main touchscreen has a nice swipe to change menus. However, Hyundai did not go overboard with screens. The designers also included analog controls for functions like volume, where a button works better than a swipe.

The digital instrument cluster enables an improved blind spot monitoring system that automatically shows the view from outside cameras when you tap the turn signals. This is a simple but helpful feature and a step above what competitors offer. However, it is also an optional extra. The standard aids for the driver include adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system, autonomous emergency braking and an automatic high beam. These characteristics are also standard for the rival Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid. But Hyundai has also set the standard for rear traffic warnings. This function is optional on the Toyota and not available on the Honda.

The Sonata Hybrid can also be upgraded with Lane Follow Assist. As the name suggests, it follows the road instead of waiting for the car to deviate from its lane before intervening. This feature worked well during a previous ride in the Arizona non-hybrid sonata, but didn't seem to be so composed on the New York streets where we drove the hybrid. The steering wheel jerked constantly as the system made small steering inputs, as if someone had given the computers a double shot of espresso.

Hyundai did not go overboard with screens.

Another technical feature adopted by the non-hybrid sonata is the digital key from Hyundai. As standard in the SEL and Limited equipment variants, the driver can use a smartphone instead of a conventional key fob. While some car manufacturers offer remote unlocking or engine starting via an app, only Hyundai, Lincoln and Tesla currently allow drivers to get in and out with just a smartphone. The digital key can also be transferred remotely to other people if you want someone to rent your car. The function is currently only compatible with certain Android phones.

A technical feature the Sonata Hybrid misses is the Remote Smart Parking Assist, which you may have seen in Hyundai's Super Bowl display with a Boston accent. The function with which the car can enter and exit even in tight parking spaces is available with the standard sonata, but not with the hybrid. It has to be recalibrated for the hybrid powertrain and will be added at a later time, according to Hyundai.

Experience behind the wheel

The hybrid powertrain goes well with the relaxed character of the sonata, but doesn't expect impressive numbers.

The Sonata Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is supported by a single electric motor. The total system performance is 192 HP. That is only 1 HP more than the base engine for the non-hybrid Sonata and much less than for the hybrid Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Unlike Honda and Toyota, Hyundai has retained a conventional transmission as part of its hybrid system. The Sonata Hybrid's six-speed automatic has a software function called Active Shift Control, which uses the electric motor to add or subtract the torque on the input shaft of the transmission. According to Hyundai, this ensures faster gear changes (ie less interruption in performance when accelerating) and better mileage.

Using a conventional transmission is important because it makes the Sonata Hybrid feel more like a normal car. The power supply is much more linear than with the Honda or Toyota hybrid systems, and the transfer between electricity and gasoline is smooth.

Hyundai also did a good job of calibrating the driving modes. Sport offers the right amount of extra urgency, and Eco isn't the penalty area found in most other cars. Hyundai also included a smart mode that automatically switches between the other modes depending on the conditions. But not everything was fine-tuned.

Hyundai brought in Albert Biermann, the former head of the BMW M Performance Division, to make his cars more exciting. But Biermann must have been on vacation when the suspension tuning of the Sonata Hybrid was completed. The handling of this car is more Buick than BMW. The steering wheel feels like it's not connected to anything, and the body's roll in sharp turns is so strong that the car feels like it's about to tip over.

We have seen similar trends in the non-hybrid sonata, but the more curvy roads at this test site have made these trends even clearer. The Sonata Hybrid performed better on highways, where its floppy suspension made it one of the quietest rides of any mid-size sedan. This is clearly a car that is designed for road trips and commuting, not for winding roads. If you want a sporty sonata, stop by when the N-Line model comes on the market.

Fuel consumption and security

Hyundai announced impressive gasoline consumption figures for the Sonata Hybrid 2020, which, however, were not achievable in real driving. The base blue model is rated at 52 mpg (50 mpg city, 54 mpg highway), while SEL and Limited are rated at 47 mpg (45 mpg city, 51 mpg highway). A 50 mpg rating was once Prius territory, so it's impressive to see a more conventional mid-size sedan reach that mark.

But the Sonata Hybrid doesn't have much of an advantage over its rivals. The Camry Hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined (51 mpg city, 53 mpg highway) in LE equipment. The Accord Hybrid is rated at 48 mpg combined (48 mpg city, 47 mpg highway). Over a week's drive, the real fuel efficiency of the Hyundai was also much lower at 38.1 mpg on average, according to the car's on-board computer.

Perhaps the number would have been higher if we could better use the sonata's solar roof. Solar cells are used to charge the 12-volt battery (so it doesn't drain while the car is parked) and the hybrid system's battery to allow more use of electricity. According to Hyundai, the roof can add 2 miles of driving range a day, but persistent clouds meant it wasn't used much. Drivers in sunnier areas may get better results.

The 2020 non-hybrid sonata received a Best Safety Pick rating for the Road Safety Insurance Institute (IIHS), but the organization did not provide a specific rating for the hybrid model. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not evaluated any sonata models for 2020.

Hyundai's 100,000-mile drive train 10-year warranty and 60,000-mile drive train five-year warranty are not covered by Honda and Toyota. The Sonata Hybrid 2020 is a new model, but Hyundai has an overall reputation for reliability.

How DT would configure this car

If you want the most technology in your Sonata Hybrid, you have to choose the top equipment variant Limited. It's the only solar roof option available, as well as the triple threat of a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a head-up display.

The additional functions of the Limited increase the weight, which is why it is not as economical as the entry-level Blue. Hyundai unfortunately forces buyers to choose between gasoline consumption and technology.

Our opinion

The hybrid powertrain improves the Sonata 2020, but does not change it. The driving dynamics are about the same as before. Although you will get better mileage, it is important to keep expectations in check. The Sonata also drives more like a normal car than its Honda and Toyota competitors, which some buyers may prefer.

The best of the Sonata Hybrid 2020 is carried over to the non-hybrid version. The highlights include a comfortable ride, advanced driver assistance and a well-designed infotainment system. The hybrid solar roof is a nice technology that could improve efficiency in practice but depends on the weather conditions.

Should you get one?

Yes. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is a good car that happens to be a hybrid.

Test Drive: One Week With the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line Shows the Car’s Strengths

If anyone still wants a sedan, this VW is one to get.

LOS ANGELES—When people ask me what my job is, I'm never quite sure what to tell them. I rarely use my official title, senior editor, because it's a bad habit in my industry that most writers are called editors. A lot of my colleagues use "automotive journalist," but I've never quite embraced it; when I think journalist, I think Woodward and Bernstein. "Car critic" is probably closest to the mark—like a movie critic or a food critic. The problem is that it sometimes rings hollow, specifically when there is a car about which I can offer no criticism. Such is the case with the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line I've just tested.

2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: More Of The Same I'm sure I don't need to tell you the Passat has been a Volkswagen staple for decades. Back in 2012, VW split-off the North American Passat from the rest of the world, creating a bigger sedan that it built in its new factory in Tennessee. For 2020, the Passat got a "major-minor" update—basically new sheet metal (except the roof) and more equipment on the same old bones.

This drew criticism, because the new MQB platform, which underpins pretty much everything VW does, including the Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport, is a better-driving chassis. But that doesn't mean the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line's old platform is bad. Indeed, during my test of it, the 2020 Passat turned out to be nearly everything I expect from a German sedan: direct, engaging, and comfortable. The latter is particularly noteworthy, precisely because my tester was a top-of-the-range R-Line model with big 19-inch wheels which could have, but did not, degrade the ride quality.  

Reining-In The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line But I did say, "nearly everything I expect"? Because I managed to find one minor flaw: a bit of float over bumps at higher speeds. And higher speeds really were a bit of a problem for me. The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line is powered by our old familiar friend, VW's 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine. (It's worth noting VW was an early adopter of the 2.0T format, and now that format is nearly universal.)

This faithful servant still delivers 174 hp, same as last year, but for 2020 VW bumped its torque, by 20 lb-ft, to 206. With its standard-fit six-speed automatic transmission, the 2020 Passat R-Line will get to 60 mph in a respectable 7.8 seconds, but it's the wall of torque (and, well, okay, perhaps a COVID-related lack of traffic) that got me in trouble—seems the Passat likes to sneak up past 80 mph, and that's where I started to feel the extra softness in the suspension. Not that I should be one to criticize—I too am showing softness with advanced age.

But the engine does return good fuel economy, and the big 18.5-gallon fuel tank, a relic from the days when the Passat was offered with a lusty-but-thirsty 280-hp V-6, gives it a nice long cruising range.

Inside, this 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line test-car is like a VW Greatest Hits album: Clear analog gauges (no video-screen dash option like on other VWs), three-dial climate controls, and a small but straightforward touchscreen stereo. Volkswagen installed a bunch of new safety tech for 2020, by the way; all Passats get collision warning with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring, while the SE model and above get adaptive cruise, lane centering, and automatic high-beams

And let's not forget that old Passat staple, the limousine-sized back seat, which is one of the basic reasons why the North American Passat differs from the MQB-based car sold in other markets. God bless the cheeseburger!

The bottom line is, I've tested-driven and critiqued cars for a lot of years now, and when it comes to the basics of getting a family of four or five where they need to go, there aren't many cars that do it better than the Passat.

2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: Where It Could Be Better Now, a lot of my fellow critics have found something to criticize—specifically the fact Volkswagen didn't move the Passat to that new MQB platform. No question there would have been advantages. I'm sure my one itty-bitty complaint about the ride could be ironed out, and the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line could probably get the fancy digital dashboard found in other VW models.

But I can also understand the reasons for sticking with the old platform, and they all come down to dollars and sense. Volkswagen has trumpeted its commitment to sedans in our market, but sedans are a dying breed, and we can understand the argument that it just doesn't make sense to sink too much money into the Passat.

And while the Passat isn't exactly a bargain—at least not at the higher trim levels—with a starting price below $24,000 and an all-in price of just more than $32,000, we can hardly accuse Volkswagen of price gouging. (Incidentally, in order to keep costs down, VW has gone the way of Honda: Most options have been eliminated, with the trim level--S, SE, R-Line, SEL--determining the Passat's equipment level.)

Well, it's true the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line might be a better car if it was on the MQB platform. Maybe it would be even more engaging to drive, or have a little more backseat room, or more up-to-date tech. Maybe it'd make a stronger stand against newer competitors like Toyota's Camry, Nissan's Altima, or Honda's crowd-pleasing Accord.

But the 2020 Volkswagen Passat driven for this test is solid—and this car critic simply can't find anything worthwhile to criticize.
