Reasons why we think the 26th bday message was from bunny laoshi. 🗒️

I know that a lot of us don’t need “reasons” to even cpn that xz made this letter, but it’s still fun to look at the clues that make the conclusion much stronger. a lot of us just knew once we read it, who the author is. as with all other candies, if you believe it, you do. if you don’t — there is no amount of evidence that will change your mind.

i’m so happy that the bday letter is back, last year was understandable (considering what was going on) so to have it this year made everyone emotional. as usual, it’s a beautiful letter. i am thankful that yibo is loved. that aside from us fans, he has someone close to him, who adores him that much to write something like that for him.

this post is only for the letter, not the bday photo/art. that will be a separate discussion.

A HISTORY,

As with most candies, context is key. We don’t usually react this much without it having some story behind it. There is almost always a pattern. The “birthday” message first popped up for Bobo’s 23rd bday. Then 24 and 26. You could say anyone can make a birthday message — but this is different. It’s way too personal and the way it’s written, to us who pay attention, is very xiao zhan. There were already CPNs for the past 2 years, so we were actually just waiting for the 26th bday letter — and boy did it not disappoint!

• They all start with saying hello to the *age* Yibo. It’s like this person wants to be the first one to greet WYB in his new year of life.

• The way it’s constructed is very similar. It starts with a recap for the year, what WYB has gained from the past and wishes for the future. I have to say that the 2020 letter was the start and then it evolved into what it is today because of the time they spent together. XZ now has more and more things to say.

• The message of growing up slowly is also there. I think XZ really wants this for him, that even if WYB had to “grow up” faster than other people his age, even if he has so many responsibilities — that he still gets to enjoy his youth. 🫶🏼

Even if you let someone else read this letter, and you tell them, “it’s from their s/o”, they will believe you. To those who look at it and think it’s an employee, i don’t even know what to say. You don’t even have to believe that it’s XZ, but it is most definitely WYB’s significant other. Look at UNIQ_OFFICIAL weibo account birthday caption, that’s what employees do.

Now onto the “reasons”. I have listed a couple and I know there might be more out there but here are the ones that made us 😭😭😭😭:

1. My absolute favorite part of the letter:

In the past year, you've gradually learned to relax while working hard and understood how to face the world with a gentler attitude. You've been willing to watch the stars while hurrying forward. You've been willing to enjoy a pouring rain happening one afternoon. You've been willing to quietly see the horizons at the other side of the sea. You've been willing to stop for a beautiful sunset.

A person who knows you will only be the one to write this. The level of understanding XZ has for WYB is just. I can’t. He really loves him. The things he decided to use : stars, pouring rain, sea and sunset is so THEM. He might as well add the moon to have the whole cpf symbol set completed. 😂😂😂

And for comparison, XZ wrote these words in his Oasis for the DC wrap-up:

There are two pictures that I really like, one is the beach outside of the Xiangshan hotel balcony, another is the scenery from the highway in the middle of the Hengdian Xianju forest where we frequently ran. These two different places and different views are both places that comforted me when I was lost and helpless. When I was down, I would sit on the balcony, and the sea breeze, the beach and the moonlight would give me the answer; when I was tired, I could rest on the path in between the forest scenes, and upon opening my eyes I would see the raindrops and the fog that would also give me the answer: in each and every moment, I chose to not complain or be negative, I put my all towards each choice and decision I make;

It’s how freakin descriptive he is. He has a way with words that make you “feel” what he is saying or even see it.

2. This part too, about stopping. Slowing down. It’s the same thing XZ said before. Plus in a couple of XZ’s videos, you will see shots of him admiring the sunset.

Time never pauses, but you seem to know the secret of making the world stop occasionally. You use your calmness and poise to welcome and get in touch with the world. Yibo, sunsets are beautiful, just like every dusk that you missed when you focused on forging forward.

AND THE “Yibo,” OMG. I can hear XZ’s voice in my head saying it. It’s too intimate. I know it’s his name but the way it’s written here — Are we even supposed to read this? It feels too personal 😭😭😭

But my answer is always, WYB wants to show off. He wants us to feel single. I’m in a long term relationship and even I felt single 😂😂😂😂

3. “The small number has changed again” referring to his age. There might be no hidden meaning, but some cpfs interpret this as the person who wrote it is older than him. Because he considers yibo’s age as “smaller” than his. Hello to their 6-year age gap. 👋🏼

4. There is 🎂 emoji in this letter compared to previous years. We think it’s because WYB is at home and they are celebrating together, no need to send a virtual cake. There is also some talk of XZ not being photographed today (8.4) on set. I won’t go to that part of Weibo but the fact that some people are nervous that he is suddenly MIA so close to Yibo’s bday is 👀

5. WYB went online for a bit, we thought he was gonna pull the same stunt he did last year and remove the automatic weibo bday post. He didn’t. What did he look at? The love letter? 🤔

6. Someone asked where was the quote “"stay cool, grow up slowly" on Baidu and the most popular answer is it’s from a book 君生我已老. We know XZ is fond of reading. I found a synopsis, and well, interpret it as you will…..

Excuse the google translate but you get the gist. It’s synopsis is also kind of similar to his drama SUNSHINE WITH ME. The part of age gap. Meeting and falling in love then having to separate, only to meet again. So if I’m to speculate that XZ got it here and liked it, maybe that’s why he chose to film SWM even if he has lots of scripts sent his way.

7. Similar with GG, who does not look at challenges in a negative way. How he regards it as a part of life and something he has to overcome.

Just regard all the adversities as the numerous mountains you have to climb and the endless waves you have to ride.

8. I don’t have to explain it that much. They both have a thing for “living with no regrets.” It’s all over their interviews.

As a young man full of mettle, you have no regrets.

I will stop right here. Again, to a lot of us, Xiao Zhan might as well sign his name at the end of the post and we would be like — Okay, we knew that. LOL.

I am open to shorter ideas for Clyde and Henry, although full disclosure, they interest me a lot less these days, so any idea would have to really pique my interest. I have a strong preference for horror, adventure, and AU's.

This is my favorite time of the year! As far as I’m concerned, Halloween runs from September 1 - November 15, if not longer! I currently have a big fic to finish up that should be done soon, but nothing else slated fic wise. After that, it’s full steam ahead for anything and everything related to Autumn and Halloween. I generally put aside other non-fic writing projects during this time to focus on Halloween content.

For the week of Halloween, October 25 - October 31, I intend to post a big daily oneshot. My stories generally range in size from 5k to 25k, and some are even more! Look for a mix of horror, humor, romance, and adventure! Everything will contain adult themes and mature content. There may be other writing throughout this time too. The quantity of stories I post depends on the length of them. In the past, I have posted a lot of shorter things, but I’ve gotten more into writing longer stories now. The last few years, I have averaged over 100k words for Halloween and Autumn content!

Please send me requests, ideas, thoughts, HCs, anything you like! I’ll pick my favorites or, very likely, a combination of a few different ideas, and I’ll write a oneshot that includes everything I can fit in. Feel free to send in multiple ideas or requests! The more ideas to choose from, the better! All AU concepts, time periods, etc are welcome. Anything is fair game. This is generally the only time of year I open requests anymore, so get them in if you ever want to. Requests will be open from now until Halloween. However, because I tend to write longer stories, the sooner an idea comes it, the more likely I am to use it.

As I did in the other, I'll link posts that explains certain piece of Kaylor Lore so you are able to better understand certain Koincidences. So if there's an (X) beside something, it's to give more context and info.

Some say that with the reflections on the guitar, you see a woman. But that's not the most important thing.

Good Omens the Musical!

Yes! It's a thing!!

Since I have this knowledge and I keep bringing it up and people always seem surprised to learn about it- so here's a little recap of everything we know-

"Good Omens the Musical" is an official musical adaptation of the Book- both Terry Pratchett and @neil-gaiman know about it- and It has been given their blessing.

Those running the musical, Vicki Larnac (music & Lyrics), Jim Hare (Book), and Jay-James Moody (Book) are all very passionate and heartfelt, (and also seem very sweet) and I absolutely believes that it is in some of the best hands, hands down. There is a bunch of info on their website but if you only watch one thing watch the Video on the landing page. They talk about how the Good Omens musical came to be- It starts with what is already in the Sizzle reel and has bits and pieces of the musical scattered throughout it.

Other things:

I reached out to them via email recently (July 2023)(still so happy that I heard back from them~) and asked a couple of Questions, the most important one-

Q: Is this still an active project? Since last I heard about it was 2019-2020.

A: Yes! While COVID stopped progression on the project- they are still very much working on it! And have plans for the next step!

So while I am no expert in this musical, I am very happy to hear that is still being worked on.

But where can I watch the musical?

Right now- Nowhere. There isn't a full recording of this musical- what we do have- are clips of the musical, from the workshop version- we are still witnessing the starting stages of this production! It's quite exciting to see!

However there is at least one review out there on Tumblr by @seraphofshadows

🔸Yamanaka: The project Milgram started one year ago, on 04/27/2020. Viewer participatory/interactive music project. All songs are produced by DECO*27, world building and scenario by Yamanaka Takuya, and music video by OTOIRO.

🔸Yamanaka: The viewers become prison warden Es, and speculate the sins of the 10 “murderers” to pass judgment whether to forgive/not forgive. The story progresses based on the results of the judgment.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): I’m sure all of you (viewers) were excited when this was announced, but we were also super excited when we received offers to join this project.

🔸Es/Horie (Haruka): We were!

🔸Yamanaka: You probably couldn’t make sense of any of it just from the documents right?

🔸Horie (Haruka): Still, it tickled my otaku-heart, like to forgive or not to forgive, or the fact that everyone has committed some sort of sin.

🔸Amami (Es): The world building is phenomenal

🔸Yamanaka: We listed out everything the characters did in the documents when we sent them to you, so it must be not be easy to voice act while hiding that knowledge.

🔸Everyone: True, you have a point.

🔸Yamanaka: And now we’re faced with the super difficult challenge of being asked all sorts of questions on live, and not allowed to disclose any spoilers.

🔸Amami (Es): We’re pretty limited on what we’re allowed to disclose.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Especially Kotoko-san.

🔸Yamanaka: Kotoko-san is still a complete enigma.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): You guys know nothing about her yet, right?

🔸Yamanaka: Only that she’s cool.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): I know everything though.

🔸Horie (Haruka): What’s wrong with you?

🔸Yamanaka: It’s fun to look at all the speculations when you know everything already.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Yup. Speculations are fun to read

🔸Everyone: Yup.

🔸Yamanaka: There’s a lot of clues scattered throughout the MVs, and I get startled sometimes when I read all the speculations.

🔸Horie (Haruka): There are a lot of them that are on the right track.

🔸Amami (Es): I think to myself “that’s so close!” as I read all the theories in the comments. There’s also a lot of comments in English from overseas fans, but unfortunately I’m bad at English so I don’t understand. I do feel immense passion though, I truly thank everyone for the comments!

🔸Yamanaka: When we designed the characters and their sins, we tried to design them in a way that is open for interpretation depending on how each viewer feels, and encourage differences in opinions. For example, some sins may be legally wrong, or something that you can’t forgive emotionally, and some may be interpreted differently due to cultural differences and different upbringings. So we encourage people from all walks of life to participate, to increase the diversity and depth in the results.

🔸Yamanaka: Next I want to ask… Do you have a prisoner that you’re interested in other than your own character?

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Ohh…

🔸Horie (Haruka): What a difficult question.

🔸Amami (Es): I’d like to know from you two.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Umm.. you know…?

🔸Amami (Es): Yes, I know everything. laughs

🔸Horie (Haruka)/Aimi (Kotoko): contemplates

🔸Amami (Es): It’s alright, Milgram has everything

🔸Yamanaka: That’s right… from emotion to law to ethics to your tastes/preferences/kink (TN: 性癖 Not sexual. A lot more innocent in Japanese).

🔸Amami (Es): An abundance.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Ummm I felt the pressure from Yamanaka-san earlier to like Amane-chan, but I’m kind of scared of Amane-chan… I mean, it’s not limited to Amane-chan, but there are a lot of characters that look like they have a line that I shouldn’t cross. I feel like if I stepped over that line, there’s no going back… and everyone has that line. Honestly it’s hard to find a bias.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Bias, huh. When it comes to finding a bias, I mean, everyone is kind of… weird.

🔸Amami (Es): So who do you like?

🔸Horie (Haruka): Well if we are talking looks, I like Amane-chan.

🔸Amami (Es): Thank you.

🔸Horie (Haruka): But it’s a difficult question.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): I’m actually interested in Haruka a lot. Horie-san’s songs are so good. I get into a lot of things through songs, so when I first heard them, I thought “Wow, what a voice” and it left a strong impression on me.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s very delicate.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Weren’t we so nervous?

🔸Amami (Es): Yes!

🔸Horie (Haruka): You were the first and I was the second - now I’m first - being the first person to create such music content made me so nervous. Plus, Undercover was so well done, so I was extra nervous going after you.

🔸Yamanaka: We gathered voice actors who can sing well from all times and places.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): All times and places laughs

🔸Yamanaka: Just like Horie kun said, first impressions may change, and they might betray you, but if you gather the courage and make them your bias regardless, you can enjoy the impact from the change in character.

🔸Amami (Es): I love Deco27-san’s songs, and the song was packed with Deco27-san’s worldview, so I was really really happy when I was asked to sing this song. I was looking forward to the recording every single day

🔸Yamanaka: As you know I write the scenarios and Deco-san uploads the music. When I hear the music from Deco-san, I am astounded every time. Especially when I heard the intro for Undercover, I was like, “Ah, this is amazing, this is the beginning”

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Have you sang as a boy before this?

🔸Amami (Es): No, I haven’t. I didn’t have much experience with music contents. To me, Es is my magnum opus. But I’ve always wanted to sing in this kind of voice, so this allowed me to achieve a lot of my dreams, as we speak.

🔸Horie (Haruka): I like Undercover so much, that I just spam the link to actors who aren’t even involved in Milgram.

🔸Amami (Es): Thank you lol

🔸Yamanaka: I’ve had the opportunity to listen to Amami-san’s voice before, so Deco-san and I knew what to expect

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): It’s amazing that you’re able to pick such a perfect fit

🔸Amami (Es): Thank you.

🔸Yamanaka: It’s fun to do a role you’ve never done before right?

🔸Amami (Es): Yes, thank you for the opportunity.

🔸Yamanaka: So Undercover was released on 5/15, then followed by the prisoners’ songs. Next slide please… oh sorry I made a mistake. Here we have an intriguing scene, we have Es, warden, and scattered boxes… this scene feeds everyone’s imagination.

🔸Haruka/Others: The number of the boxes also trigger intrigue.

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s take a look at the next slide… It’s the chorus. In the choruses, we can see the fearful faces of the prisoners come together gradually. Next slide please.

🔸Horie (Haruka): This looks kind of scary when you take a closer look.

🔸Amami (Es): There’s a lot of comments asking about what’s going on in this scene.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): True, it’s hard to tell what’s going on here

🔸Yamanaka: What do you think? It seems like there’s a lot being done to Es.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Everyone speculates about the prisoners and whether to forgive or not, but the speculation already starts here.

🔸Yamanaka: I started this project wanting to enjoy the speculation with the viewers, but the depth and speed that everyone forms their speculations far exceeds my expectation… I’m a little startled. So that’s how Milgram began, and the first song from a prisoner is this. Next slide please.

🎴 Weakness by Haruka

🔸Aimi (Kotoko)/Amami (Es): Ah, here it goes

🔸Yamanaka: What do you think? It’s about you..

🔸Horie (Haruka): Um… What should I do?! Is what I thought. I thought it was very difficult from the documents I received. I’ve had the opportunity to sing a lot of character songs that are catchy and melodious, but it was my first time working on a more serious and full-fledged song made by Deco*27. There’s a lot of falsettos and the key was pretty high.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s very high isn’t it?

🔸Horie (Haruka): I haven’t had much opportunity to sing these kind of songs so I was nervous and excited as I recorded it.

🔸Yamanaka: Haruka was very fun.

🔸Amami (Es): Is that so?

🔸Yamanaka: Even the voice recordings were super fun.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Regardless whether it was voice recordings or the song, Yamanaka-san told me to make it nauseating.

🔸Yamanaka: I don’t care if no one likes Haruka, just make it as nauseating as possible

🔸Horie (Haruka): That’s what he told me! There was a part of me that wanted to make Haruka a popular and likable character, but I was told to expel all impure thoughts and intentions

🔸Yamanaka: It didn’t matter if Haruka couldn’t get a single view – that’s how much I emphasized on just building the character.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Even with that, I saw a lot of comments saying they’ll support Haruka for life.

🔸Yamanaka: There’s the reality in a character that has been finessed.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): The chorus is very memorable… I always end up singing it at home.

🔸Horie (Haruka): People who start by liking him are probably those who like to make life difficult for themselves.

🔸Yamanaka: Are you sure you want to say that? There’s one right beside you.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Oh right lol!

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Umm… I guess you’re right. Oh, and you got to do a cover for Two Breaths Walking, I’m very envious.

🔸Horie (Haruka): I think it was my generation. When I was a student, it’s a song that was played over the speakers at school during lunch. It’s that kind of song. (TN: in Japan, the school would play various music/songs during lunch hour through the school PA system)

🔸Yamanaka: You’re in that generation?

🔸Amami (Es): That was our youth.

🔸Yamanaka: I feel a generation gap. I’m the same age as Deco-san, so those type of songs wouldn’t play during lunch for us. Let’s take a look at the MV. Here we have Haruka, we used a collage-multimedia style MV.

🔸Amami (Es): It looks unsettling.

🔸Yamanaka: It’s a change from the anime-style Undercover.

🔸Amami (Es): Can I ask a question? I’ve been reading the comments and there’s a lot of questions around whether if the Haruka seen here is actually Haruka, or his sibling.

🔸Yamanaka: I can’t answer that. Next please.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Oh no it moved on.

🔸Amami (Es): I really want to know!

🔸Yamanaka: Yes, I understand many of you want to know, but I can’t tell you anything at the current stage, so we’ll just have to speculate.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Only suspicion.

🔸Yamanaka: Next slide please. The last scene.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko?): ah, it’s precious

🔸Horie (Haruka): Which emotion?

🎴 Umbilical by Yuno

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s move on to the next song. Yuno’s Umbilical was release on July 17th. The change in musical style after Haruka’s Survival of the Fittest (TN: the Japanese title of Haruka’s song Weakness) must have been a surprise.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko?): It’s very different.

🔸Horie (Haruka): I thought the style would be consistent with Weakness.

🔸Amami (Es): Me too.

🔸Yamanaka: People wonder what would come after Undercover and Weakness, and then we’re hit with this.

🔸Horie (Haruka): It took me by surprise.

🔸Yamanaka: we’re receiving a lot of comments that Yuno is cute.

🔸Amami (Es): Yuno-chan is so popular. When I search Milgram on Twitter, I see how immense Yuno-chan’s popularity is. I want to rest on her lap for 1000 yen too.

🔸Yamanaka: 1000 is cheap.

🔸Amami (Es): For real. Please, I beg you!

🔸Horie (Haruka): Who are you begging?

🔸Yamanaka: She’s begging Yuno-chan.

🔸Yamanaka: Yuno chan is pretty prickly in the dramas… She’s not an easy person to deal with and it’s demonstrated well through the great acting.

🔸Horie (Haruka): That’s true, Aisaka-kun’s way of acting and singing captures Yuno’s essence exquisitely… I can’t get into more details, but really shows Yuno’s vibe.

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s take a look at the MV

🔸Everyone: so cute! I love the colors.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Um this scene… you’ve heard it from Yamanaka-san already right? This scene really traumatized me.

🔸Aimi(?): Trauma?

🔸Horie (Haruka): Yes… traumatic.

🔸Yamanaka: Next please! Here we have デイのシーン? (TN: I couldn’t really catch what scene he’s referring to. He says Day Scene, but idk what a day scene is?)

🔸Amami (Es): this is nice, the karaoke screen at the back is a cover song.

🔸Yamanaka: Yes, there are easter eggs.

🔸Amami (Es): I want her to come Karaoke with me~

🔸Yamanaka: After the project took off, eventually the MVs will come out. But when I first wrote the story and Deco san composed, then I’m like, ah, so this is how (the story) is portrayed. I’ve had a lot of moments like that. I think it will build up to an exciting result one prose at a time. Next slide please. Yuno-chan falling.

🔸Horie (Haruka): She’s falling.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): She’s wearing an undershirt. No peeking at her tummy.

🔸Yamanaka: I like that. Usually people would wear it.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): True, usually people wear an undershirt but in 2D world usually you get to peek at their tummy.

🔸Yamanaka: I’m the type who want to make them wear undershirts.

🔸Horie (Haruka): you prefer realistic portrayals. Old man’s peculiar taste.

🔸Yamanaka: that’s a bit, um…

🔸Amami (Es): Please stop that lol.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Please stop that? LOL.

🔸Yamanaka: What we have next is very different once again.

🔸Everyone: AHHHHH Fuuta… wahh….

🔸Horie (Haruka): Lounsbery-san is a genius, for real.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s so unique to portray an MV like a game.

🔸Yamanaka: This MV is like a peek into his mind/how he sees the world in his mind, it lets us see how he sees his own sin. It really demonstrates Otoiro-san’s techniques and creativity.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Could there be a meaning to the number 1014?

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s move on to the next slide.

🔸Horie (Haruka): I want to know what the 1014 means.

🔸Yamanaka: This scene shows us that Futa has this side to him as well.

🔸Amami (Es): He’s been coming off strong/confident up until now, but this scene suddenly shows uncertainty/anxiety and makes people wonder.

🔸Yamanaka: Futa is usually full of himself, but he has a weaker side, and this shows that people are multifaceted.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): There’s a gap in personality.

🔸Amami (Es): True, everyone is head over heels for this gap.

🔸Yamanaka: True, Futa-kun is loved.

🔸Amami (Es): Cocky characters receive all the love.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Ultimately, they’re adorable.

🔸Horie (Haruka): And yet, he wasn’t forgiven.

🔸Yamanaka: It’s really a test of whether you can still think they’re cute or cool once you find out the truth about them.

🎴 Afterpain by Mu

🔸Yamanaka: We have a problematic person coming up as well… next slide please. Mu-chan.

🔸Everyone: Ahhh…. She’s here.

🔸Amami (Es)/Aimi (Kotoko?): A pretty girl.

🔸Horie (Haruka): So ephemeral. Her voice is really clear.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko?): Her voice is the best.

🔸Amami (Es): She really sounds ephemeral.

🔸Yamanaka: I agree. The clarity of her voice and (the clarity/ephemeralness) of her character really matches well. I can say this for everyone, but Kouri-san’s singing is so good.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): She’s really good! She can sing any kind of songs.

🔸Yamanaka: That’s true. She’s really good at getting the pitches right.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): She’s a genius at giving the right nuances.

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s take a look at the next slide.

🔸Amami (Es): Thumbnail!

🔸Yamanaka: Mu-chan had a lot of specific scenes.

🔸Amami (Es): True, she had scenes that were expressed in direct/literal ways.

🔸Yamanaka: Her character is also pretty different between her MV and her drama, and how you interpret her character really changes depending on how far you pursue this character.

🔸Amami (Es): That’s true… the comments from the people who heard her drama part are mostly confused, like “What should I do with this (information)?”

🔸Yamanaka: Even in the real world, for example a news story about a murder, you’d have very different opinions depending on if you just read the headline, vs when you watch the whole thing, vs when you do more research on the person.

🔸Amami (Es): yes, the information keeps getting updated.

🔸Yamanaka: The interpretation completely changes depending on people’s interest levels

🔸Yamanaka: Next slide please.

🔸Yamanaka: Who is this?

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Who?

🔸Yamanaka: I wonder who?

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): It’s an obviously different face, drawn in a such a clear shot.

🔸Yamanaka: Yes… for the other characters, everyone other than themselves are drawn rather abstractly.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Yeah, even for Haruka, the other characters were rather scribbly.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Yeah we couldn’t see their faces.

🔸Yamanaka: I wonder we’ll find out who she is eventually…?

🔸Amami (Es): Aww, eventually…!

🔸Yamanaka: I like this part.. Next slide please.

🔸Amami (Es): Ahh, it’s here, the scene in question.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Judging by the results we know this scene, but it’s hard to tell which one is which (TN: I’m assuming she means which one is initiating the killing). Only these two know.

🔸Yamanaka: Mu-chan said it herself; it’s true that she committed murder, but you wouldn’t understand unless if you’ve been in her shoes.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s drawn pretty directly here, but she was forgiven. “Not forgive” was the majority until near the end of the vote, but ultimately “forgive” won at the end. I wonder if the wardens have had a change of heart.

🔸Horie (Haruka): “I forgave her, even though I didn’t want to” I’ve been seen these in the comments.

🔸Yamanaka: It feels like real society, where you have people who know the complete story currently available through both the drama and song, trying to convince people who only listened to the song to listen to the entire story before forgiving her.

🎴 Throw Down by Shidou

🔸Yamanaka: Let’s move onto the next song. Shidou-san.

🔸Aimi (or Amami): The one in charge of sexiness.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): He’s so stylish.

🔸Yamanaka: Throw Down, in terms of musical range, is rather unexpected for Shidou.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s so good.

🔸Yamanaka: He’s so cool.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): The way he sings is also sexy.

🔸Yamanaka: This song makes me feel mellow.

🔸Amami (Es): Yes.. but initially, he was singing one octave lower right?

🔸Yamanaka: yes… We practically had him retake it until it fit Shidou’s image. We spent as much time as we could on the vocals.

🔸Horie (Haruka): whose proposal was it to raise an octave?

🔸Yamanaka: Originally we were doing it in this key, because we were focused on Shidou’s image and to make sure it suits Shidou’s appearance, so we were like let's do it in this octave. But ultimately, we said, let’s raise an octave. There were a lot of trial and error.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Shugo-san is amazing for being able to keep up with all of that.

🔸Yamanaka: Yes… it’s a unique case, but we recorded the voice (lines), then the song, and we did retakes of the voice stocks to match results of the song.

🔸Amami (Es): Ehh, really?!

🔸Yamanaka: Yeah.. Shidou’s a complex person so there were a lot of trial and error.

🔸Yamanaka: Let's take a look at a shot from the MV.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): Ah, so good! His gaze.

🔸Horie (Haruka): He’s beautiful.

🔸Amami (Es): His skin is so clear.

🔸Horie (Haruka): He has such fair skin.

🔸Amami (Es): there are no bad people among people who part their hair at the middle.

🔸Yamanaka: I don’t think that’s true.

🔸Horie (Haruka): Really? I think there are plenty lol.

🔸Yamanaka: The two beauty marks under his eyes are sexy.

🔸Amami (Es): It’s too sexy that they are a pair.

🔸Yamanaka: We get to learn about what kind of person Shidou is in real life for the most part.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): His profession is clear.

🔸Amami (Es): Like a doctor, most likely.

🔸Yamanaka: It’s a difficult job, so there’s probably a lot going on.

🔸Amami (Es): it’s a job that affects human lives.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): there’s a comment saying they want to listen to the lower octave song.

🔸Amami (Es): I want to listen too.

🔸Yamanaka: sorry… for being the only ones who had heard it.

🔸Yamanaka: Shidou-san’s drama and interrogation also causes confusion on what kind of person he is. He’s that type of person, so I hope you’ll watch over him from now too. Next slide please.

🔸Amami (Es): This place collapses right?

🔸Yamanaka: yes. He’s making human shapes from flower arrangements in the MV, and ultimately it collapses at the end.

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): He was in a white coat just now, but now he’s in a black shirt. The color scheme changed completely.

🔸Yamanaka: Yes.. when I saw the MV from Otoiro-san, I felt that expressions were portrayed in very intricate ways. I hope they are viewed many times.

🔸Amami (Es): it’s very detailed.

🔸Yamanaka: I’m being told that the way I brush past questions with a chuckle is scary.. I’m sorry for that. That’s my only option.

🔸Amami (Es): Ah true, there’s a lot that you can’t disclose.

🔸Yamanaka: I don’t mind telling it all though, just spoil everything.

ANNUAL WRITING SELF EVALUATION 2023

List of works published this year:

Wanted: Dog Walker // Louis needs a dog walker. / Harry answers the ad. A Social Construct // Five times Harry and Louis try to lose their virginity and one time they finally do.

Tongue Tied // Louis’ new bestie placed a hand on his shoulder; he turned with a sway and looked into his blue eyes. ”What do you wish?” / The world spun for a moment, and Louis shrugged. It was easy. The only thing he wanted. “I wish that I could tell Harry that I love him, instead of getting all tongue tied and chickening out.” / The Irishman winked. “You never know, your wish may just come true.” / “From your lips to God’s ears, mate.” He gave the man a hug. “I gotta go before my Uber leaves me.” / He stumbled to the door, and that was the last thing he remembered from the night. ‘tis the damn season // Harry returns to her small hometown over the holiday season and starts to think about the road not taken.

Work you are most proud of (and why): ‘tis the damn season because I have always said that there was absolutely no way I could write an advent fic day by day. And yet, when Nov 30th came around and I only had two chapters, my fomo won over my fear of failure and I thought I’d give it a try, because the worst that would happen is that I wouldn’t finish it, which would’ve been fine! But then with the help of everyone who read along, I actually did it!

A favorite excerpt of your writing: unlike most years, when I quickly scrolled through my works, nothing specific jumped out, so I’ll just say that I really liked how ch 6 rolled into ch 7 in ‘tis the damn season!

Share or describe a favorite review you received: literally every single one.

A time when writing was really, really hard: oh boy. Okay. so if you go back and read my 2022 recap, and 2021, you’ll see that writing has consistently been hard for me for a few years. So, this year I told myself not to worry about it, that I could not write a single thing and not feel bad about it. I didn’t do a ton of writing this year, but having the internal pressure off sure helped. Even though I really miss the way it used to be.

A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I’ll say Zayn in ‘tis the damn season, because I didn’t have a role for her when I started, and I really liked her as minor threat slash Louis’ bff and sometimes hookup. I want someone to write a story in her pov. lmaoooo How did you grow as a writer this year: I really tried to get rid of my perfectionist tendencies and tried to write without putting pressure on myself.

How do you hope to grow next year: i dont even know, tbh. I’ll be very happy if I match my 2023 fic count.

Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): I adore everything that @disgruntledkittenface put out this year. The way she keeps pushing herself is really inspiring.

Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: ummm, I guess the ‘moving back home thing’... idk. Nothing i wrote this year hit particularly close to home.

Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: i love you. please keep going!

I was looking at a book recs list from 2020 where you mentioned GoodReads, and I was wondering if you've looked into The StoryGraph since then but had no idea what tags to check and didn't wanna scroll through three years of posts looking, sorry if you already have an existing manifesto somewhere.

I checked it out back when I stopped using Goodreads but wasn't really interested. as much of my decision to quit with Goodreads came from my desire to be as detached as possible from Amazon, I was also really over the performative gamification of reading that came from logging every book finished and page read for people to see, and as much as I respect Storygraph's existence as a Goodreads alternative I wasn't really interested in taking up the exact same behavior all over again.

Storygraph was also still definitely going through some growing pains at the time, and I frankly wasn't very interested in sticking around waiting for it to get good. this was very shortly before a large group of authors, most of them POC, reported that their books were getting flagged for content that was barely in the book or not present at all - ie, a queer middle readers book getting a CW for scat when nothing more explicit happened than a mention of a character going to the bathroom. I don't know if it was ever sorted out whether this was malicious targeting, well-meaning over caution, or a combo of the two, but between that and some other user features that I was side eyeing at the time + the above, that was a polite no from me.

after that I switched over to a Google docs list tracking the books I want to read and keeping track of what's been read on a yearly spreadsheet, with monthly recaps here. that's been much more satisfying for me 📚

RL moment with Luna

Greetings, folks! Since I love you all, I'm going to give you a mini update on my life.

Let me give you a condensed recap for my new friends here.

Hi! I'm Luna. I graduated from college in 2020. Yes, during the pandemic. But yay graduating!!

I started working as a preschool teacher for a private school in 2021. The entire 3 years I worked for that school were an absolute nightmare. (If you want stories, DM me)

The program was year round, so I hardly had any time off, due to teacher/dub shortages, and I had to work late for the after-school program because, once again, teacher/sub shortage.I have an autoimmune disease that causes chronic fatigue if not managed properly. Less stress, more sleep, etc.

Basically, your girl was not doing well.

Despite everything, I got into grad school, a dream I've held close to my heart.

I needed out of that school, and fast. It was eating my life away and not giving me any time to have a life. But, since I live in the United States, I also needed a job for insurance.

After many, many months of applications, interviews, doctor's visits, and near breakdowns...I resigned. I couldn't handle the school anymore.

Since then, I have taken June and July as a time to rest, catch up on school work, and figure out my next step.

That also means that I have been living off my meager savings, and have spent the entire month of July without insurance. Thankfully, all the rest and time to do things I love like write, read, and swim have done wonders for me.

Back to the work issue, though. Despite me applying to every job imaginable, it seems that the only places that want to hire me are schools and child care centers.

So now, your girl Luna will be teaching public preschool starting in August! 🎉

What I like so far is that I have a set time that will not be messed with. School starts at this time. School ends at this time. I also love that I get a break (which is illegal not to give a teacher a break, but my former school just went 🤷‍♀️), and time to do lesson plans, which my old school told me to do on my own time.

What does this mean in the future of my writing?

Since I will FINALLY have a little breathing room in my schedule, I plan to do a lot more of it. It brings me joy, and I need that joy back. However, I'm also doing grad school. That will keep me busy.

Those things being said, my plans in the near future are to try and finish The Lie Becomes the Truth before tackling any of my long long loooong list of one-shots, wips, and other ideas I have waiting in my notes. I have a beta lined up to help me, so hopefully you will see chapters rolling out a bit faster soon. I'm currently working on chapter 18.

Be warned this is going to be a long post because I read a lot of books last year that I loved…so…yeah…

I feel like I need more to work with than just “give me a book rec” butttt 🤔 I suppose we can make this work

I mostly read fantasy but I assume you knew that since you follow me 🤨👀

(Unless mentioned otherwise these are all trilogies or duologies)

If you like puzzle games I’d definitely recommend The Inheritance Games 😌 I thoroughly enjoyed that trilogy and it made my puzzle mind go brrrr

As for fantasy, I have quite a few to recommend

If you’re into classic fae (as in…darker stories I suppose) I’d recommend The Cruel Prince and These Hollow Vows. They both have deeply romantic undertones but they’re more heavily focused on the politics that the stories revolve around.

*The Cruel Prince also has two novellas that go with it and a sister duology about the main girl’s younger brother, so if you’re looking for a world to get immersed in and keep reading, I’d seriously recommend reading that entire world.

If you’re looking for more whimsical fantasy I’d recommend Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart. They’re sister series that are semi-connected and they both have very immersive fairytale vibes. These two are heavy on the romance aspect but they also have great plots that carry them!

If you’re into low fantasy where there’s a bit of magical element in the plot but it’s not overwhelming, I’d recommend Six of Crows and Defy the Night. Both of these books have amazing plots but they focus more heavily on the relationships between the characters and how they trauma they’ve experienced has shaped their personalities. Six of Crows is a lot heavier of a read, so if you’re looking for something lighter, start with Defy the Night.

If you’re looking for fantasy that’s just a bit fun, I’d go with Assistant to the Villain. This book was very silly and fun while also dealing with serious topics. It was, however, to my dismay, a trilogy with only one book out…so…be warned.

If you’re into dragons and war colleges I’d recommend Fourth Wing, but keep in mind that this one has smut and lots of swearing. Despite the fact that this is one of my favorite books, I give this recommendation very loosely because of the content in it.

As for standalones, I have a few great recs:

- The Forgetting

A sci-fi (?) mystery about a city where everyone loses their memory every 12 years. Lovely characters and great plot.

- The Half-Life of Love

Absolute tragedy of a story that you know will end awfully from the start but you read it anyways and then sob your eyes out.

- Greymist Fair

A paranormal Brothers Grimm-esque collection of related stories. The town of Greymist Fair is very enchanting, and the way the stories all tie together is so much fun.

- The Stars We Steal

This was sci-fi and I read it in 2020 so honestly who knows what happened in it but I remember really enjoying it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fantasy March: Omnibus

As I prepare for the future of this blog (and there is a future, if anybody's wondering), I find myself looking back at the good times, when I had the time to watch a movie a day and write a blog about it, which...yeah, wasn't even sustainable for me in 2021, so make of that what you will. ANYWAY, I decided that I would bring all of these posts together in an omnibus of sorts, so anybody that wanted to read these posts could find them all easily in one place. This, alongside other archives, are going to be pinned to the top of my page, and will serve as a long index of the films in the appropriate genres. The goal? To extend these archives as I go along, and have this running index for my blog. And again...there will be additions...

SO! With that, feel free to check out these films in the fantasy genre, which is another one of those overlap-prone genres, but with a very distinct vibe to them. The definition of the fantasy genre, for the sake of this blog, is any film where the plot is forwarded or the universe is built upon supernatural phenomena that cannot be explained by scientific means. That includes science fiction means, so no Star Wars, and no superhero films, but possibly some science fantasy. Any films you'd like to see in this list? Comment, reblog, message me, whatever! A very subjective recap of my audiodrama journey in 2023 "Year of the Rabbit"

This is entirely based on personal preferences and not at all an objective assessment of quality

If applicable, cast members are listed with the gong first.

"Web Drama/网配" here refers to the free, not-for-profit productions

All AD's are on Mao'er FM (Missevan) unless indicated otherwise.

Favorite Completed Dramas

The Golden Terrance/黄金台 -- (Web Drama/网配)

Jia Xu/贾诩 x Yacejun/雅策君

Three not-for-profit productions of The Golden Terrance launched in 2020, but this is the first and only one to be completed! I'm just so grateful and amazed that so many talented people contributed to make this happen -- all for free! It's not perfect, but it's comparable if not better than for-profit productions at least 90% of the time, and I think it really did this beloved novel justice. Go listen to it!

Famous/In Name Only/有名

Wei Chao/魏超 x Chen Jiaheng/陈家恒

I did not know I needed to hear Lan Wangji's audiodrama VA speak in a southern/canto-style accent, but it has been life-changing.

"Famous" comes with all the bells and whistles you could possibly hope for in a professional, for-profit production. It has eight original songs, tons of little skits and bonus content, wonderful performance and polished post-production. The team brought their own vision to the adaption, leveraging the of creative potential in the audio medium while staying true to the text. If we have to nitpick, I'd say Liang Yu sounds a bit old for a man on the cusp of 30, but Wei Chao's magnetic voice is more than enough to make up for it.

After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine/残疾战神嫁我为妾后

Shi Zekun/史泽鲲 x Liu Sicen/刘思岑

This is the guilty pleasure personal favorite I have been playing on repeat in the background -- a comforting little sugar pie AD. Objectively speaking, this production has noticeable flaws, from built-in plot holes from the source material to uneven performance and mixing of some minor characters' dialogue. However, I really like the sweet, lighthearted story and the lead voice actors' performance, and we got the entire thing in one season!

The Sword Named No Way Out/剑名不奈何

Zhao Yi/赵毅 x Chen Zhang Taikang/陈张太康

I'm very conflicted about this one! This is the first time I really understood the charm of Zhao Yi's voice, but I don't like his character (gong/love interest) or the romantic arc. I am intrigued by the twists in the plot, but we still don't know who is the main conflict halfway into the story, because the novel is just written this way. I'm absolutely charmed by the supporting characters, but I suspect their roles will be reduced in the next season to make way for the the main romance. I really can't get into this novel for some reason, so I'm waiting on the AD to satisfy my curiosity.

"Top flower vase of the mainland entertainment industry"/内娱第一花瓶 -- (Web Drama/网配)

Liu Sicen/刘思岑 x Shang Tong/商桐

This free drama has released 3 stunning seasons since 2021. The screenplay and post-production is a little rough in places, but that's nothing to compared to quality and scale of the output -- the first few episodes of the AD convinced me to commit to reading this 900K words long novel! With free Web Dramas, you can't really guarantee or expect anything. It updated fairly consistently since 2021 but lead CV Liu Sicen currently has an insanely busy lineup of paid projects and likely no time for this. I'm very grateful for the seasons we have had, but I still dream of this AD releasing one more season to at least finish the main story -- and end on a happy note after the reconciliation!!!

Onmyōji/阴阳师 -- (on Manbo & others)

Yuan Mingzhe/袁铭喆 & Zhao Chengchen/赵成晨 [No CP]

Ironically, I think this is the series with the smallest chance of getting a second season, despite its star-studded cast, excellent production, and iconic source material. It sounds great, and I love the main voice actors playing something different from their normal dynamic. However, the series struggle to attract a wide audience as a general/non-BL drama. I'm taking comfort in the fact that the source material is a collection of short stories, so it doesn't feel too incomplete at the end of Season 1.

"well, that ... happened"

A lot of the ADs released in 2023 are said to feel like the work off a "production line"/流水线. It does well enough to maybe satisfy the fans of the source material and fans of the voice actors, but there's not much that's special about it to draw you in if you are not already interested, and is far from realizing the full potential of the story and the AD medium. There were a few shows that I had been very emotionally invested in, but ultimately they were a bit underwhelming.

The Demon Venerable’s Wistful Desire/魔尊他念念不忘

Yuan Mingzhe/袁铭喆 x Ma Zhengyang/马正阳

Probably the most well-received drama out of the three here. The source material -- a comedic xianxia transmigration story -- helped it stand out in field a dominated by modern urban dramas. I didn't find the story to be particularly compelling or innovative as a fantasy/xianxia story, but the voice actors gave solid performances.

Flower Vase/花瓶 -- (on Manbo)

Peng Yao/彭尧 x Liu Sicen/刘思岑

Does anyone still remember this show from last year? Flower Vase is an iconic novel in the scum gong/substitute/crematorium sub-genre, and because it's short and relatively old, there are already two complete free Web Dramas (and more incomplete ones). This work is good, but not enough to make most people willing to listen to this story again or really stand out over the free versions. I liked this one mostly because I was (and still am) in a phase about Liu Sicen's voice.

Morbid Attachment/诟病

Wen Sen/文森 x Yuan Mingzhe/袁铭喆

I'm a fan of Zhe-ge and Wen-laoshi to downright unreasonable degrees and even I have nothing to say about this drama except "it finished." Seriously, you have these two on your cast, in an extremely popular story that features a pop star, and we have like two and a half songs, no duet, and not a single song from YMZ. I still put it on when I want to hear their voices, but it definitely didn't deliver on the potential of one of the most popular stories on Changpei.

"not bad but I had higher hopes "

All of these are based of very popular novels that I read and liked but didn't love, and I ended up feeling the same way about the ADs. It's a coincidence that Taikang has leading roles in all of them.

TGCF/Heaven Official's Blessing/天官赐福 Season 1

Chen Zhang Taikang/陈张太康 x Su Shangqing/苏尚卿

Since the AD is based off the new revised version of TGCF that me (and most people) haven't read, it's hard to tell if the show has completely misinterpreted parts of the novel or if it's just new content. I can't truly dissociated TGCF from the unpleasantness of all the fandom drama, which dampens my enthusiasm for it quite a bit. However, I'm happy enough with both the production and the performance in the 2023 release that I listened to it a few times. But at an emotional level, I'm just not as excited as I expect myself to be for a project of this level of fame and quality.

Swallow the Sea/Tunhai/吞海 Season 2

Zheng Xi/郑希 x Chen Zhang Taikang/陈张太康

It took me a while to realize why I was struggling with Swallow the Sea. It's hard to follow mystery/procedural stories if you are only getting 40 minutes of content once every week -- you would have forgotten everything by the time the new episode airs! I never realized before because I got into AD's late enough that a lot of iconic shows (like Modu and Poyun) have been completed and available for binging. Now I think I'll wait until this one finishes all its seasons.

Thrice Married to Salted Fish/三嫁咸鱼 Season 1

Ma Zhengyang/马正阳 x Chen Zhang Taikang/陈张太康

I felt a bit underwhelmed by the novel when I finished it, and I wouldn't have cared for the AD at all if it weren't a collaboration between Ma-laoshi and Taikang. Ironically, I really love the ending theme, which the audience hated so much the studio had to put out a new mix. Maybe this story is just for people with very different tastes?

Everybody's talking about you

I haven't listened to these yet, but I heard so many good things about these three in the past year.

Qiang Jin Jiu/The Ballad of Sword and Wine/将进酒

Yuan Mingzhe/袁铭喆 x Jiang Guangtao/姜广涛

Does this need an explanation? After its surprise return just before Chinese New Year, the newest (free) episode racked up more plays in a few weeks than entire seasons of some ADs. This is what a real superstar looks like!

But personally, I plan to wait until the series finishes first. I waited for almost two years for Season 4 -- I can wait a bit longer for an indulgent binging experiences.

The Selfish Gene/秉性下等

Shun Zi/顺子 x Sun Lulu/孙路路

This drama has the closest thing I have seen to "universal acclaim" in the AD fandom in 2023. It's one of the few 2023 dramas to break through 10 million play count, beating out many productions with bigger IPs and more popular voice actors.

I definitely want to listen to it, but now I want to wait until I'm in the right mood to really enjoy it.

Stealing The Wind But Not The Moon/偷风不偷月 -- ("Voiced drama"/Audiobook, on Ximalaya)

Sang Yuze/桑毓泽 x Yang Chaoran/杨超然

2023 saw a lot of activity in the 有声剧 area. I think of them like audiobooks because they keep most of the narration, but they are still called "dramas" and the actors still put a lot into their character performances.

This production has been received very well, especially compared to the audiodrama that is currently airing on Mao'er. I held back on the AD because of this, even though I have been very excited about a Liu Sicen x Shun Zi collaboration. However, I'm not sure I want to get into a new platform for this, even though it definitely put Ximalaya on my radar.

I'm waiting to see how it goes ....

Some series are off to a strong start, but there's still a long way to the end ...

I Became a God in a Horror Game/我在惊悚游戏里封神 (Season 2/?)

Shun Zi/顺子 x Dao Mei Si Le/倒霉死勒

Season 1 have play counts that can rival TGCF, and Season 2 seems to be starting off strong after arriving at the end of 2023. The hype alone has gotten my interest, but then I realized it would take probably 10 seasons to finish this novel, so I think I'll wait a bit first ...

The Reincarnated Minister/再世权臣 (Season 1/ ?)

six people x Dao Mei Si Le/倒霉死勒 [NP]

I heard the plot of this novel is actually quite good, and I am really impressed with the quality of the free episodes. However, this novel is looooong, and I'm not sure I will enjoy the NP outcome in the end. But if they can keep up the good work for a few more seasons (lol years?), maybe I could be tempted into getting into this.

A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love/泾渭无间 (Season 1/?)

Hao Tian/浩天 x Xu Xia 徐佳琦

Unlike the other two, I followed Season 1 of this one as it released.

GL deserves more love, but I'm not very optimistic about this drama carrying through to a satisfying conclusion in a timely manner. A novel of this length would normally take 4-5 seasons on Mao'er, but its stats are not encouraging. In the final of episode of Season 1, they did that ridiculous montage that rushed through so many things, probably trying to save on costs. I understand GL has a smaller fanbase than BL, but it's still disheartening to see one of its biggest IPs being handled liked this ...

A Special nod to a few web dramas

The amazing labors of love we get to enjoy for free.

"Spoil"/作践 (Web Drama/网配, completed)

Zhao Chengchen/赵成晨 x Gu Chen/顾辰

(2021-2022, 12 episodes + 1 extra). I only listened to the first four episodes, which prompted me to read the novel, but then I found it a bit too dark for me to want to revisit AD. That being said, I am very impressed with the episodes I heard, especially the screenplay. I didn't feel lost at all even before I read the novel. It set up some complex scenes and conflicts very clearly, better than many for-profit dramas imo.

The Golden Terrance/黄金台 (Web Drama/网配, in progress)

Xu Xu Dian Deng/续续点灯 x HolyNight

(2020-- ?, 7 episodes so far) This drama didn't update in all of 2023. I lost hope when then other version finished, but then they suddenly came back with a long new episode early in 2024! I think this adaption is a bit more abridged than the one that already finished, but fingers crossed that they finish this!

"Dao Zhan Shan He"/ 刀斩山河 (Web Drama/网配, incomplete)

Shang Tong/商桐 x HolyNight [switch CP/verse]

(2020-2022, 6 eps) The production officially ended, which is a real shame because it was pretty good for the parts it covered. I listened to this because I really liked the novel, and it actually encouraged me start exploring the other Web Series that has been abandoned/incomplete, because the good work of the staff and actors deserve to be appreciated even if they didn't have the resources to finish the story.

The most disappointing ....

Mr. Melancholy Wants to Live a Peaceful Life/忧郁先生想过平静生活

Wen Sen/文森 x Sun Lulu/孙路路

I'm disappointed with this drama, but I sort of understand why it came out this way. The novel plays heavily off dramatic irony to carry its humor and suspense, and that is hard to express in audio -- at least, I don't think there is a well-established formula for it. However, I still think it could have done much better to cover the scenes and action in a straightforward manner.

The Return of Cambrian Period/寒武再临

Guo Haoran/郭浩然 x Ma Zhengyang/马正阳

I can understand why "Mr Melancholy" is hard to adapt, but I really, really don't understand why this straight-forward, plot-driven action adventure has turned out so poorly. The episodes are too short and fragmented to engage listeners. A lot of the dialogue could have been edited during adaptation to make it more natural and smooth. Many scenes use music and sound effects that are very cheesy and dated, which almost sounds like an inside joke about the age of the novel that no one wants that at the expense of quality. It's just a long list of little problems that seem incomprehensible for a production that had the budget to hire an all A-list cast.

"Tan Lian"/贪恋

Wen Sen/文森 x Yuan Mingzhe/袁铭喆

My favorite voice actors tackling an original screenplay! I was so excited, but ....

the story is just not good, to the point I'm wondering how did everyone get through making this AD, because it makes so sense as a narrative! If it's a comedy, maybe everyone can at least get some laugh out of it, but it has be a angsty scum gong story. "Confusing and miserable" just don't make an appealing combo.

Final Thoughts

When I first got into danmei in 2022, I mostly listened to the "backlog" of famous productions, and I was really blown away by the quality and variety. 2023 was the first year of me "following" the current releases, and it was a little disheartening tbh. The industry seems to be a at a turning point, experimenting with new people, genres and formats, with varying results. Maybe it will work out better in 2024.

I feel like we see peter angst way more commonly than Harley—so if you ever feel up for rambling about it under a cut or a spoiler tag this is a free space to do so! okay anyway sorry to what the ask was actually about pfkfj, HARLEY!!! i agree it’s definitely a lot easier to come across peter angst than harley angst, which most likely has to do with the fact that there is a LOT of material to draw from for peter’s character—various movies, comics, shows, timelines and universes and the games. it’s a lot easier to come up with angst for peter because there’s a lot of canon angst to choose from AND there’s so much content for him that it’s a lot easier to get a grasp on his character and create angst based on that, you know? but as a fandom we have definitely created many ideas of harley based on when he was a kid in im3 and his cameo in endgame, plus the WEB comics + ride at avengers campus, so harley angst is for sure out there but like you said it is NOT easy to come across lmao

as for the HB2 plot—i have an ask in my drafts from like a month or two ago asking for more information about hb2 and i’m gonna try to finally finish answering that and post it sometime today, so that post will definitely include some insight in what to expect from the sequel, but harley in hb2 specifically? i GOTCHU.

so homeward bound, as i've said before, is PETER'S story post no way home, right? but in hb2 it's peter AND HARLEY'S story post homeward bound. the first chapter is a recap of the first fic from harley's pov with a lot of extra bits thrown in, starting on the day that thanos first snapped and ending either where the first fic ends or maybe in the summer between school years. unsure as of now but one of those, for sure. so that's going to offer a lot of perspective about harley's character in homeward bound - his thought processes, how he was feeling in a lot of key moments during the first fic, things he was doing while peter wasn't around, etc etc etc.

but in hb2, after the recap in the first fic, it picks up at the start of their second year at ESU. he might still be roommates with harry. he might not be. it won't be the same room at the very least, so no matter what, there's going to be some changes, right? but also:

everything is different.

there are the small changes - not the same room, harder classes as they climb their way through the pre-reqs, potentially a different roommate, some stuff happened over summer, etc.

but also there are the BIG changes, like his dynamic with peter, and knowing that peter is spidey and now being a part of keeping that a secret due to peter not wanting anyone else to know. he also knows about the spell and he knows that peter is someone tony loved, someone that pepper and morgan and happy and rhodey knew and cared about, and none of them remember him, but they know harley.

with harley's pov comes the reintroduction of the rest of the world, basically. peter has no one, right? his old life was completely destroyed and erased, leaving no connections to the people he used to know, so he's been VERY closed off from everyone and everything.

harley, however, still knows pepper and morgan and happy and rhodey. he still talks to them on a regular basis. he has his mom and his sister. he isn't closed off in classes like peter is, actually having conversations with his classmates, even if he has no interest in befriending them. peter's pov has been very limited because his world has been completely changed. harley's has been changed too via the loss of tony and him being dead for five years while his mom and his sister had to adapt to a life without him there, but it's not been changed to the extent of peter's, you know?

harley is going to have a few struggles in hb2, some centered around peter, some not. there's going to be family stuff. there's going to be this urge to tell pepper and them about peter because he thinks that peter would benefit from having these people in his life again but also he wants to respect the fact that peter doesn't feel ready to do that.

there's going to be some conflict about the people in his life learning that he's involved with spider-man's business somehow. there's going to be people getting angry at spider-man because of it.

a lot of mental and emotional turmoil is going to come out of all this. but, in the physical sense, he's not going to be entirely safe, either. again, people are going to realize he's somehow connected to spidey. he's going to want to do whatever he can do to help peter, to the point where he's going to get a little reckless with it sometimes.

caught in the crossfire? yeah.

hostage situation? no. at least, not in hb2. not that i currently have planned. that could change, but as of my current plans, no.

The Alleged Con Log

(This isn't gonna be a full recap in chronological order, like my first one, and like many of the wonderful and amazing logs I've read thus far. Part of that is because I didn't end up "doing" all that much. But the larger part is that what I want to do here is talk about what it meant to me, more than what happened.)

(I'm also going to omit any names out of precaution, because I don't want to publicize anything without consent.)

(But, if you recognize yourself, hi! I enjoyed our interactions at the con and I am okay with you interacting with this post!)

So. I went to Charmed.

Now, I'm fairly new to this community; or I should say, to being active in this community. I fully delurked somewhere around summer or autumn 2020 (I wonder how many of us took the panini as incentive to chase after a dream?) but I've been around some of the spaces for a much longer time. Like, an "I remember when the MCForum started requiring logins" time. And from the first time I heard about the con scene, I knew I wanted to get there someday.

I say get there, because it felt so far out of reach for me, back in the day. I was rocking a fun mix of social anxiety, common-or-garden anxiety and imposter syndrome that led to me convincing myself that 1) I would never tell anyone about this interest of mine, and 2) even if I did, I would never be brave enough to actually join the community "for real".

(Goes to show that your brain lies to you, huh? Something something "you are braver than you think" etcetera.)

Given all that, I knew this con was going to be a Moment for me, like a huge one. I had gone online the past two years, but it didn't feel like enough. I knew that I wanted to be there. I had almost ended up going in-person in 2022, but pulled out at the last second in the face of COVID numbers and general travel uneasiness.

I promised myself it wasn't going to happen this time. Even while going through a bout of depression over the holidays, I focused on the idea that I wasn't going to miss out this time. To paraphrase the Mountain Goats song, I was gonna make to this con if it killed me.

I did make it, and I am so, so glad that I did.

I would spend the next few days doing my best to balance between gently pushing myself and respecting my energy. I didn't end up hiding in my room too much of the weekend, a fact I'm honestly pretty proud of. And I talked to people! Actual, live people that exist in real life!

(Sidebar: that part was a trip for me, initially, as someone so used to online. On the day I arrived at the hotel, within ten seconds of getting in I spotted a Famous Community Person and audibly went "oh shit". Fortunately, I met them briefly later on and was able to apologize. They told me they hadn't noticed. Phew! 😅)

The classes I went to were uniformly great; I came away with a whole bunch of notes containing actual, applicable advice. But for me the difference in being there were the people. All those I met were friendly and very welcoming to little old newcomer me. I pushed myself to engage in conversation in the hallways when I had the energy for it, and was rewarded every time. I even managed to link up with a few people from back home (there are ones of us! literally ones of us!), and talk about the possibility of local events happening in the near future.

Other highlights, in no particular order (linear time is boring anyway!):

Going to an induction class and realizing "Hey, I understand this. I could do this. I can do this."

One particular class resonating with me on a personal level (kinda took me by surprise actually) and leaving me with a very interesting reading list

Being dropped in front of a class – for the first time in-person, actually – and the person who did it reassuring me that everything was Okay™ afterwards and I hadn't imposed on them. Thank you for helping reel in my brain goblins!

Being invited to a lowkey room hangout that was exactly what I needed after a long first day – and meeting lots of positively lovely folk there and also I bought the coolest cat pin

Nerdy conversations about the state of the MCU on the way to the Gallery

Meeting several people in the community who were and are sources of inspiration, and noticing that they're all absolutely lovely humans on top of that

By my standards, I burned brightly all weekend, and by the end I was pretty spent. But I did it.

In closing, here's the part where I reassure my spicy brain that I Did The Thing Correctly. Going into this, I had these goals written down:

Learn Things

Be Social

Say Hi To People I Know From Online (As Much As Possible)

Go To At Least One Evening Event

Participate In One (1) Activity Related To Writing

Write a con log afterwards and post it somewhere (hey that's this one!)

(Bonus) Do Some IRL Trancing

Of those modest goals, I accomplished checks notes all of them. Huh!

(Well, at least one person I know from online I didn't get to say hi to. They looked busy, I didn't want to intrude! Next time, Gadget…)

Of course, there's things I wish I could have done, people I wish I could have connected to. Of course, I feel like my fears got in my way, more than a few times. Of course, I wanna do more next year. Because there will be a next year for me. Many of them, if I have my way. Hell, I'm even thinking about this summer…

But for now, I just want to focus on gratitude. Just existing in this space is life-giving to me, and I hope to be able to do it so much more.

Ice, you are officially broken.
