No need for an RV with these great camping cars

No need for an RV with these great camping cars
Consider this the summer in limbo, and not just because we have to bend over backwards to make any plans at all. With summer plans scrambled due to the coronavirus pandemic and more Americans wary of airline travel and hotel stays, it’s time to restore that timeless American adventure and hit the road.
It won’t take an RV or a vacation rental to explore America’s national treasures while still maintaining distance from other Americans. Camping requires some gear—glamping requires an excess—but our list of camper-ready vehicles come from the factory ready for adventure.

The versatile family hauler can become a cabin on wheels if the weather becomes unbearable. Available now in all-wheel drive, the 2021 Pacifica comes with second- and third-row seats that fold into the floor (the hybrid model does not come with second-row Stow ‘N Go seats). Other vans have heavy, removable seats that become a pain in a pinch, such as during that surprise hail storm or when that shrill animal cry gets closer. And closer. With 140.5 cubic feet of space behind the front seats and room enough to fit four-by-eight sheets of plywood, the Pacifica could fit a full-sized inflatable mattress with just a little squeezing on the side. If that’s not enough space, it can tow up to 3,600 pounds (when a $995 towing package is equipped), good enough to tow everything from recreational toys to small travel trailers.
2020 Subaru Outback

2020 Subaru Outback
The poster child for the outdoorsman, the predecessor to the do-it-all SUV, the Swiss army knife of cars, the Sultan of Swat, the King of Crash, the Colossus of Clout—you get it, even if you’ve never seen “The Sandlot” or visited Colorado. The Outback is all grown up, and handles suburban outings with the same capability as back-country romps. The low, wide, flat floor, and wide door openings make loading and unloading gear a cinch, and dogs love jumping in and out. Collapsible roof racks with tie downs come standard, as does all-wheel drive and a slew of safety features. Available water-repellent interiors, skid plates, a trailer hitch with 3,500-pound towing capacity and so many aftermarket roof-top tent options make this classic as modern as ever. And it’s the only vehicle on our list that can answer the call of the wild with efficient urban driving.
2020 Honda Ridgeline
2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition
2018 Honda Ridgeline
2018 Honda Ridgeline
Any pickup truck could make our list, but since the Ridgeline shares a platform with the Honda Pilot crossover SUV, it’s the smoothest-riding pickup and our pick for an impromptu camper. The truck bed extends from 64 inches to 83 inches with the tailgate down, which is long enough to be a makeshift bed in a pinch. With 50 inches across, a twin mattress could fit, or a full-size could get squeezed by the wheel wells. If not being used as a pillow, the dual-action tailgate swings out to the left for easier bed access and a clever floor locker can double as a cooler. A truck-bed audio system on the RTL-E trim sweetens the deal, and an available bed extender or roof-mounted bike carrier means you can bring along the toys. There are some pretty sweet aftermarket tents that extend over the bed, as well.
2020 Jeep Gladiator

2020 Jeep Gladiator
2020 Jeep Gladiator
Jeep’s mid-size pickup truck, or the Wrangler with a bed, offers all the capability of a Wrangler with the added versatility of a pickup that can tow up to 7,650 pounds. And you can take off the roof and doors for a night under the stars. For off-roaders, the long wheelbase limits its breakover angle compared to the Wrangler, though there are few places that would worry the Gladiator. The 5-foot steel cargo bed might not be the best for sleeping, but the available Trail Rail system with a 115-volt AC outlet and all the Mopar parts means you can equip the Gladiator in a way that tells others: “I’ll sleep when I die.”
2020 Dodge Durango SRT

2020 Dodge Durango SRT
As much as we love the performance from the 475-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 in the Durango SRT, we prize the three-row SUV here for its towing capacity of up to 8,700 pounds ($1,195 package required), which is the most for any SUV not based on a truck. That’s good enough to tow some 30-foot travel trailers, and when you unhitch it at the campsite you can cruise around the local sights with gusto. Or find a straight to hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Careful on arriving at the campground late or leaving early; the unabashed V-8 rumble might cause your neighbors to enact social distancing in a much more hostile way. It seats six, too, with comfy buckets in the first two rows, so if you had to sleep in the car, you could recline and cocoon yourself in blankets or catch a flick on the rear entertainment center ($1,995). That’s not really camping but at least you’re out of the house.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
It doesn’t matter that this three-row SUV is nearly old enough to get its own driver’s license, the Land Cruiser is beloved the world over for its rugged capability and SUV versatility. The 381-hp V-8 and truck frame give this heavy 4×4 the kind of off-road confidence expected in a truck but with a boxy body. It seats eight but no one will be happy about that. The third row can never get out of its own way, however, even if it’s split and swung out to rest against the wall. The off-road ready Heritage Edition deletes the third row to seat five, and comes with a mega roof rack coveted by posers and brozers alike. Options are limited but tow hooks, skid plates, mud-and-snow tires, a split liftgate/tailgate, and an integrated hitch capable of towing 8,100 pounds come standard. What it lacks in interior refinement and features, the Land Cruiser makes up for in bona fide go-anywhere capability. It’s not the roomiest if you need to crash in it overnight, but there are so many aftermarket accessories and roof-top tents you may never need to.
2020 Land Rover Defender
2020 Land Rover Defender
2020 Land Rover Defender, 2019 LA Auto Show
2020 Land Rover Defender, 2019 LA Auto Show
Land Rover might be the only brand with an off-road reputation on par with the Land Cruiser, and the return of the boxy Defender two- or four-door SUV puts the British brand firmly back in the bush. Thick bumpers, big wheels, heavy cladding, and a tailgate-mounted spare belie the blend of luxury and rugged finishes found inside, such as a touchscreen, alpine lights, and exposed rivets. The Defender X off-road model has locking center and rear differentials, and all Defenders come with four-wheel drive and 11.5-inches of ground clearance, which is nearly an inch more than a Wrangler. An available jump seat could let you sit three up front to get the best shots on safari, and other options such as a 1.7-gallon water reservoir for cleaning off muddy pets or shoes, an electric winch, or roof and side carriers let you customize your outback adventure. The various “packs” are almost as cool as the Defender itself; the Adventure Pack comes with a seat backpack and integrated air compressor.
2022 Volkswagen Microbus
Volkswagen ID Buzz electric bus concept with 1964 VW Microbus
Like the Defender, the Bus is back. Almost. And when it arrives for 2022 as the ID Buzz or the Electric Bus or whatever it’s going to be called, it will be an all-electric van. Little is known about the reboot of the 60s counterculture icon except that it will be a key part of Volkswagen Group’s plans to build 27 different electric vehicles across all brands. Since most established campgrounds have electricity, finding one with EV chargers is getting easier. Ride on, plug in, drop out.

Fold Down, Load Up, and Roll Out: 10 SUVs With Fold-Flat Seats
As a cyclist, my bike might be my most prized possession. When I’m out on the trail all of life’s concerns fade away, but driving there with my bike is super stressful. Why? I’m in constant fear of a mishap that could leave my two-wheeled whip damaged—or worse.
If I’m using a hitch-mount rack, I’m worried an inattentive driver will rear-end me and crush my bike. A roof rack leaves it exposed to low-hanging obstacles and garage roofs. In a pickup truck bed, someone could snatch it if I stop for supplies. That’s why I prefer an SUV with fold-flat seats when I’m driving with my bike.
Having an SUV with back seats that fold down flat is undeniably handy. Whatever you want to chuck inside, folding the rear seats down can help it fit. The good news is that there are tons of SUVs with fold-down seats on sale today. Here are 10 good ones.
2020 Kia Telluride
Our 2020 SUV of the Year winner makes it easy to fold down the back seats. Tug the straps on the back of the third row seats and they drop down. Then, hit the standard one-touch fold button in the rear cargo area to activate the folding second row. In a matter of seconds, the Telluride’s cargo capacity has grown from 21 cubic feet as standard, to 87 with the seats folded down.
2020 Subaru Outback
Subaru’s much-loved pseudo-SUV is designed to be an awesome adventuremobile. Back seats that fold down are part of that brief. Available levers in the cargo area quickly release the folding second row, expanding capacity from 32.5 to 75.7 cubic feet. For its new generation, Subaru made an effort to widen the space behind this SUV’s fold-flat seats, so that even more gear can be loaded in.
2020 BMW X7
This seven-seat BMW SUV is packed with features, including its back seats that fold down. A button maximizes cargo capacity by activating the second and third row fold down seats with a single touch. Push it again and—presto—all the seats rise back up. Be aware that the X7’s folding second row seats take quite a bit of time to go down, and don’t fold perfectly flat. Nonetheless, up to 90.4 cubic feet of cargo space let you fit a whole lot in this luxury SUV.
2020 Mazda CX-5
We like the Mazda CX-5 for its sleek styling and enjoyable driving dynamics. This SUV’s fold-flat seats make it pretty handy, too, with a 40:20:40 folding second-row seat that lets you configure it how you please. The left, right, or middle seat can be folded down individually, or the entire back seat folds down flat. That opens up the cargo area from 30.9 cubic feet to 59.6 cubic feet. Zip up some duffel bags and zip down the road.
2020 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is an originator in the compact SUV segment, and just keeps getting better. Back seats that fold down flat provide 75.8 cubic feet of cargo volume. The upcoming 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid doesn’t lose any interior volume to the added battery pack.
2021 Chevrolet Suburban
When it comes to SUVs with huge cargo volume, few can top the Chevrolet Suburban. It has second- and third-row seats that fold down flat, creating a ton of space for sports equipment or family supplies. With all the seats up, the new Chevy Suburban has 41.1 cubic feet of cargo volume. Fold down the second- and third-row seats and that grows to a maximum of 144.7 cubic feet, a full 23 cubic feet more than the previous Suburban and rivaling the space inside some big-city apartments.
2020 Toyota Sequoia
The Toyota Sequoia is among the ultimate SUVs with lots of cargo space. Its back seats that fold down flat in the second and third row enable up to 126.4 cubic feet of cargo space, more than the Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, or Chevrolet Tahoe. That’s capacious enough for even the largest pieces of gear and luggage. Toyota claims there’s enough space inside to fit objects up to 11 feet long.
2020 Ford Explorer
Pretty much everyone has ridden in a Ford Explorer at some point. For its newest generation, this SUV upgrades its fold flat seats. Optionally available are second and third row seats that fold flat with the touch of a button in the cargo area, a feature more commonly seen on expensive luxury SUVs. With all the seats up, the Explorer has 18.2 cubic feet of space. With fold-flat seats down, that grows to 87.8 cubic feet of capacity.
2020 GMC Terrain
SUVs with fold-flat seats in the second and third row are nothing unusual, but the GMC Terrain has a trick feature: Its front row passenger seat folds flat, too. That lets drivers fit extra-long items in this compact SUV, at the expense of having a co-pilot to ride along. Nonetheless, cargo volume of 63.3 cubic feet is available thanks to back seats that fold down flat as well.
2020 Jeep Renegade
Jeep’s tiny but tough Renegade is among the smallest SUVs on sale, but still has back seats that fold down flat. There are only 18.5 cubic feet available with the seats up, but that expands to 50.8 when you fold the seats down. Load up some gear and hit the trail.

While auto shows generally tend to end up absorption on a distinct agent chic — anticipate SUVs at the Chicago Auto Actualization or exotics at Geneva — the LA actualization didn’t assume to this year. But, as we abstruse from Seinfeld, article defective a axial focus can still be awful entertaining. With debuts alignment from the awful advancing Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator auto to the abutting Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s agents begin themselves ambrosial active putting their butts in all the new seats.

The Audi E-Tron GT is still a abstraction car — and angelic hell is it a adorable one — admitting it will advance to a abounding assembly archetypal that launches in backward 2020. Its powertrain technology is carefully accompanying to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a acceptable thing. The key specs that you allegation to know: It’s got a 90-kWh array backpack giving it a 248-mile range, as able-bodied as 590 absolute arrangement application and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will advice Audi get against its ambition of affairs 20 electrified models by 2025, and if added of them attending like this, again we’re all for it.
We already adulation the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a aces convertible adaptation that can do 207 afar per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the berth 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can accessible or abutting in aloof 19 abnormal back traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Beneath the awning is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, acceptable for 626 application and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds added than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in aloof 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT fabricated its admission in Los Angeles during the anniversary of the show, but strangely, was not at the actualization itself.
BMW debuted its little affection out with a abounding calendar of hot new luxo-missiles, the best important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a adventitious to get abaft the caster of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA admission showed us the best advancing adaptation (so far) of the abutting 3 Series, which will accomplish 369 application from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can affirm that it’s abundant added absorbing in person, with its added advancing exoteric and interior.
BMW additionally had the new 8 Series Convertible on duke forth with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye backpack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can apprehend added about here.
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on auction in North America back 2016, but it hasn’t absolutely bent blaze with consumers (maybe it would if it looked added like the Multipla from the backward 1990s and aboriginal 2000s). For 2019, a active archetypal debuts with hardly altered looks, a new engine, accepted all-wheel drive and a abundantly simplified archetypal range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the agent bay, area the 1.4-liter turbocharged agent or 2.4-liter artlessly aspirated agent has been replaced with a distinct 1.3-liter turbo unit. Admitting the admeasurement reduction, the new agent absolutely produces a lot added torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should accomplish it feel sprightlier than aftermost year’s model, admitting the actuality that application charcoal bashful at 177.

It’ll be able to tow as abundant as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will action all address of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport aggressive with the cast of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, admitting Honda’s access does assume a little added asperous than those entries.
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the aboriginal one to a brace who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s aboriginal able at a three-row SUV — you may anamnesis that the brief Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the added acknowledged three-row Santa Fe and its afresh renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does assume like an adorable and advised option.
Hyundai afresh told Roadshow that the midsize SUV articulation moves about 1.5 actor units per year in North America, so it will be absorbing to see how abounding of those sales the Palisade will abduction back it hits dealers abutting summer.
If this year’s LA Auto Actualization was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a auto barter in its calendar back the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche auto of the backward ’80s and aboriginal ’90s and if the internet’s acknowledgment to it is any affectionate of barometer, it’s activity to be a hit.
While it’s accessible to address off the Gladiator as aloof a Wrangler with a auto bed, there are a agglomeration of differences. For instance, it’s got a altered five-link rear abeyance bureaucracy and can tow abundant added than the accepted Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a burden of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 agent is standard, but we apperceive that a turbodiesel will be offered at a after date. Don’t authority your animation for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities alteration to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with accessible disposable hardtops and a folding bendable top, added the adeptness to ford 30 inches of baptize back you accept the boxy Rubicon model. 2018 LA Auto Show preview
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/2018-la-auto-show-preview/
2018 LA Auto Show preview
The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a good one, with more new cars, trucks and SUVs than one could easily shake a stick at. AutoMobility LA, as it’s also known, proved why it’s one of the most important auto shows in the calendar year by bringing out something new to entice just about everyone who loves cars. Anyone who sets foot in the Los Angeles Convention Center from Nov. 30 to Dec. 9 during the show’s public days will not be disappointed.
While auto shows often tend to end up focusing on a single vehicle class — think SUVs at the Chicago Auto Show or exotics at Geneva — the LA show didn’t seem to this year. But, as we learned from Seinfeld, something lacking a central focus can still be highly entertaining. With debuts ranging from the highly anticipated Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator pickup to the next Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s staff found themselves pretty busy putting their butts in all the new seats.
Here’s our roundup of the most important debuts so that you’ll know what to look out for if you find yourself in LA or if you find yourself shopping for a new ride in a few months. For even more detailed look, be sure to visit our 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show landing page — it’s a convenient way to access all the in-depth coverage of all the individual models that we looked at this week.
Audi
The Audi E-Tron GT is still a concept car — and holy hell is it a good-looking one — though it will lead to a full production model that launches in late 2020. Its powertrain technology is closely related to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a good thing. The key specs that you need to know: It’s got a 90-kWh battery pack giving it a 248-mile range, as well as 590 total system horsepower and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will help Audi get toward its goal of selling 20 electrified models by 2025, and if more of them look like this, then we’re all for it.
Bentley
We already love the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a fabulous convertible version that can do 207 miles per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the cabin 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can open or close in just 19 seconds when traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Under the hood is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, good for 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds heavier than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT made its debut in Los Angeles during the week of the show, but strangely, was not at the show itself.
BMW
BMW debuted its little heart out with a full lineup of hot new luxo-missiles, the most important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a chance to get behind the wheel of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA debut showed us the most aggressive version (so far) of the next 3 Series, which will make 369 horsepower from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can confirm that it’s much more interesting in person, with its more aggressive exterior and interior.
BMW also had the new 8 Series Convertible on hand along with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye pack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can read more about here.
Fiat
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on sale in North America since 2016, but it hasn’t quite caught fire with consumers (maybe it would if it looked more like the Multipla from the late 1990s and early 2000s). For 2019, a refreshed model debuts with slightly different looks, a new engine, standard all-wheel drive and a greatly simplified model range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the engine bay, where the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine or 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine has been replaced with a single 1.3-liter turbo unit. Despite the size reduction, the new engine actually produces a lot more torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should make it feel sprightlier than last year’s model, despite the fact that horsepower remains modest at 177.
For 2019, the six-speed manual transmission has been nixed, meaning it’s nine-speed automatic or nothing. Front-wheel-drive configurations have also been discontinued.
On the plus side, a newly upgraded Uconnect 4 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, and adaptive cruise control and front park assist are now standard.
Honda
Honda’s Passport expired in 2002, but the nameplate has been resurrected (with 100 percent less Isuzu) as a two-row, five-passenger crossover that slots in sizewise between the CR-V and the Pilot, though it’s built on the same Honda Global Light Truck platform used for the Pilot and Ridgeline. The Honda Passport will launch early next year with rugged-adjacent looks and a 3.5-liter V6 engine churning out 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be able to tow as much as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will offer all manner of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport competing with the likes of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, though Honda’s entry does seem a little more rugged than those entries.
Hyundai
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the first one to a couple who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s first crack at a three-row SUV — you may recall that the short-lived Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the more successful three-row Santa Fe and its recently renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does seem like an attractive and well-considered option.
Hyundai recently told Roadshow that the midsize SUV segment moves about 1.5 million units per year in North America, so it will be interesting to see how many of those sales the Palisade will capture when it hits dealers next summer.
Jeep
If this year’s LA Auto Show was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a pickup truck in its lineup since the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche pickup of the late ’80s and early ’90s and if the internet’s reaction to it is any kind of barometer, it’s going to be a hit.
While it’s easy to write off the Gladiator as just a Wrangler with a pickup bed, there are a bunch of differences. For instance, it’s got a unique five-link rear suspension setup and can tow much more than the standard Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a payload of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard, but we know that a turbodiesel will be offered at a later date. Don’t hold your breath for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities transfer to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with available removable hardtops and a folding soft top, plus the ability to ford 30 inches of water when you elect the tough Rubicon model. Mopar also showed off a ton of awesome accessories that will help make your Gladiator unique on the trail.
Kia
Kia brought the new, third generation of the Soul to the LA show. It has sharper styling, more tech and even an X-Line variant with a slightly more rugged look (read: black plastic fender trim). Powertrain choices comprise a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter Nu inline-four and a 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbo option. Kia also introduced the 2020 Soul EV, which has a 64-kWh battery pack that should yield a driving range of at least 200 miles, though we’re still waiting on an exact number. Speaking of electric Kias, there’s also a new Niro EV. Like the Soul EV, it has a 64-kWh battery pack and a motor rated for 201 horsepower; Kia says it will return 239 miles of range on a single charge. The hamsters, thankfully, were nowhere to be seen.
Lexus
The Toyota Land Cruiser-based Lexus LX 570 is old, though it has received three face-lifts over the past 11 years. Rather than bringing a redesign to the LA Auto Show, Lexus is just showed off the 2019 LX with a new appearance package called the Inspiration Series. In a nutshell, you’re dealing with an ordinary LX 570, but “murdered out” as the kids say, with blacked-out 21-inch wheels and a black grille, along with several other dark bits to peg the sinister meters. The Inspiration Series also pegs the price alarms with its $100,420 MSRP, but that’s due to a lot of bundled-in optional features.
Only 500 units of the LX Inspiration Series will be made, so place your orders now. While you’re at it, you can learn more about this special SUV here.
Lincoln
First shown in concept form this past March at the New York International Auto Show, the Lincoln Aviator was the belle of the ball with its head-turning looks and cutting-edge features. Now the production 2020 Aviator has been fully revealed, with three rows of seating, rakish design and two powertrain options.
Buyers can pick between a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, with either rear- or all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid option is rated for 450 horsepower and 600 pound-feet, though Lincoln hasn’t yet offered any details on electric driving range or efficiency. Other luxurious and high-tech features include the ability to use your smartphone as the car’s “key,” a four-corner air suspension that uses a camera to “read” the road and react to bumps proactively, a 28-speaker Revel audio system and Lincoln’s CoPilot360 Plus active-safety suite. The fact that Lincoln used the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the Aviator’s warning tones also truly resonates with our inner car nerds.
Mazda
The fourth-generation 2019 Mazda3 is now here, with both sedan and hatchback versions that follow the styling language previewed by the Mazda Kai concept shown at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The new car will go on sale in early 2019.
There are lots of changes beneath the surface, too. The Mazda3 base engine will still be a 2.5-liter inline-four, with either manual or automatic transmissions with six speeds. The 3 is also the first production Mazda to use the company’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine, which uses a supercharger and a mild-hybrid motor assist. As if that’s not enough, the Mazda3 also boasts an upgraded 8.8-inch infotainment system and an infrared eye-tracking Driver Monitoring System that can tell if the driver is looking away from the road.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-AMG used the LA show to reveal the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, which is an even more bonkers version of the already certifiable AMG GT R. There’s no power increase, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 still putting out 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, but the GT R Pro benefits from a revised coilover suspension, adjustable anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes and retuned dynamic engine mounts. It also adds the AMG Dynamics stability control system, which has Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master modes.
Along with the Pro, of course, AMG has updated all versions of the GT coupe and convertibles with tweaks like restyled headlights, a new rear diffuser, a fully digital instrument cluster and some other interior switchgear changes. Oh, and those vents on top of the fenders are totally making the Roadshow staff swoon.
Mini
Ever since the first Mini arrived in 1959, the brand has been no stranger to special editions. Yet another one will make its North American premiere at the 2019 LA Auto Show. The Mini John Cooper Works Knights Edition takes a run-of-the-mill John Cooper Works Hardtop and drizzles it with a black and silver shining-armor theme.
The Knights Edition also features a John Cooper Works variable exhaust straight out of the accessories catalog that will let you drive stealthily or broadcast to the world that you’re fine with being small and loud, like Gilbert Gottfried. Read more about the John Cooper Works Knights Edition here.
Nissan
Nissan is updating its “four-door sports car” for the 2019 model year, giving the Maxima a slightly revised look inside and out, as well as extra safety technology on the inside. There’s also a new Platinum Reserve style package and a new orange interior stitching for the SR trim level. The car still uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine that sends 300 horsepower to the front wheels. Similarly, the 2019 Nissan Murano crossover receives an update with new lights, new interior trim pieces and a new grille design. It also adds more safety technology, and even diamond-quilted leather in the top-tier Platinum model.
Porsche
Southern California has long been Porsche’s most important market, so it’s only fitting that the sports car maker would choose LA to unveil the next generation of its most storied model, the 911. The 2020 911 debuted in Carrera S and 4S guises, with a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six engine rated for 443 horsepower, which is 23 more than before. A new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch is your only transmission choice at launch, but Porsche promises a manual is on the way later.
At first blush the new 911 may not look that different than its predecessor, but the car is 1.77 inches wider up front with a bumper and headlight treatment reminiscent of the 993-generation 911 of the mid-1990s. It also has flush-mounted electric door handles and restyled, wide taillights. Extra technologies include features like a Wet Mode, which will adjust the stability and braking systems when it detects water on the road, and standard precollision braking.
Rivian
Electric-vehicle startup Rivian is used the LA show to reveal its R1T pickup truck and its R1S SUV. The pickup claims a 400-plus-mile range and a 0-60 time under 3 seconds, as well as impressive towing and payload ratings. The R1S is a three-row luxury crossover that is also designed for lots of off-roading. It’ll use the same motors and battery packs as the truck, though its driving range should be a little longer, at up to 410 miles of range if you elect the 180-kWh battery pack. When production time comes, Rivian has pledged to build its vehicles at the former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois. The R1T is due in fall 2020 and the R1S should come in early 2021.
Toyota
This is a huge year for Toyota at the LA Auto Show, with two major bread-and-butter debuts in the form of the all-wheel-drive Toyota Prius, which adds an electric motor to its rear axle to help it lure people away from crossovers, and the all-new 2020 Corolla Sedan, which also adds a hybrid powertrain for the first time in the US market. Those are all important debuts as they’re big sellers for Toyota and now will be even more appealing.
On top of that, Toyota is showing off the sporty-ish TRD versions of the Avalon and Camry.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen’s debut at the I.D. Buzz Cargo, the work-van version of the passenger van that debuted last year. In addition to looks that force you to be happy, the I.D. Buzz Cargo features a passenger compartment with three-across seating along with an electric driving range approaching 350 miles. The one at the show was gussied up to look like a racing support van and it made us feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.
We have a ton of additional information about the I.D. Buzz Cargo van, which you can check out here.
Volvo
Volvo brought a virtual reality demo of its fancy-pants 360c concept, a driverless car designed to leave the sensor hardware carbuncles behind for a smoother, less autonomous-looking (that is, more attractive) appearance. Other than that, Volvo isn’t planning to have any other production cars on display. It did, however, have a pile of Amazon boxes for people to sit on, so look forward to that, true believers.
Our editor-in-chief, Tim Stevens, recently got up close and personal with this innovative machine. You can read more about the autonomous 360c here.

2020 Kia Telluride Three-Row CUV Previewed at New York Fashion Week
Last year, Kia brought the 2018 Stinger out to New York Fashion Week—an appropriate choice considering that car’s striking design. For this year’s big show, Kia is once again using the runway at New York Fashion Week to show off its latest vehicle—but this time it’s going one step further with a global debut. The 2020 Kia Telluride made a surprise first appearance today in New York, months ahead of its auto show debut in Detroit next January.
Because it’s Fashion Week, the Telluride has been dressed up a bit, wearing off-road gear that may or may not be functional to give it that oh-so-hot-right-now overlanding look. But beneath all that tacked-on equipment should be the final design of Kia’s upcoming three-row crossover. The styling has been toned down since we first saw it in concept form at the 2016 Detroit auto show, but many original elements have survived.
We don’t get the concept’s recessed square headlights with four LED projectors, but the boxy front end shape carries over to give the crossover a rugged look. The grille has been widened significantly, and the tiger nose design theme has been downplayed to a subtle notch in the top of the frame. To our surprise, the unique vertical taillights outlining the lower edges of the liftgate have made it to production, though they’re now wider and curve onto the hatch.
At the show, Kia also confirmed the Telluride will be built at its U.S. plant in West Point, Georgia. The crossover, which will accommodate up to eight passengers, will be powered by a V-6, according to Kia. It’s unclear if that will be the only engine option, but we expect the Telluride will in fact be a six-cylinder-only model given its position above the Sorento, which offers four-cylinder power and seating for up to seven. We think an updated take on the Sorento’s 290-hp naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V-6 would be a good fit, but we wouldn’t complain if Kia also offered the 375-hp twin-turbo version available in the Stinger GT. Whatever the case, we’ll find out when it arrives in early 2019.
This customized model was created by Kia’s U.S. design studio in Irvine, California, and gives a pretty good idea what to expect from the production version. Kia partnered with American designer Brandon Maxwell for the reveal, so the U.S. design team drew inspiration from the fashion star’s Texas roots with natural wood trim used in the interior and double-stitched leather upholstery on the dash, door panels, and grab handles inspired by a saddle. The exterior mirror caps are also made of leather, and even the door handles come wrapped in rich, brown cow hide.
The green exterior color is a clear nod to the concept. From here, the embellishments get a bit less OEM. The Telluride is fitted with custom front and rear bumpers, skidplates, and side step sills mounted to the rocker panels. The adventure-ized crossover rides on large split five-spoke alloy wheels finished in black and wrapped in 265/50R20 off-road tires. If you’re still not convinced by this crossover’s overland makeover, there’s a snorkel intake, off-road auxiliary lights, bumper-mounted winch, spare tire hanging off the back, and a wood and aluminum roof rack loaded with chic vintage-inspired luggage and obligatory western gear.
But strip all that away, and you’re left with a ruggedly handsome crossover that could give three-row sport utes like the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, Chevrolet Traverse, Volkswagen Atlas, and Subaru Ascent a run for their money.
We should see it in full production guise and learn much more at the 2019 Detroit auto show.

It’s the First Day of Summer! Here are 15 SUVs for Your Road Trip
Editor’s note: This article was originally published in May 2019. It has recently been updated with new information.
Today is the summer solstice, which means road trip season is officially here. Being that it’s the first day of summer, you’ll want to get your vehicle ready for that epic trip you’ve been waiting to take. Don’t have a vehicle yet? We’ve got some we can recommend. An SUV is a good choice for road trips because they’re supremely versatile. Need to fit a couple weeks’ worth of luggage? No problem. Got friends tagging along, too? With the right sport ute, that’s also not a problem. Now that SUVs’ fuel economy numbers have begun to catch up to conventional cars, they’re an even more compelling choice. Here are 15 of the best SUVs for your summer road trip.
Honda CR-V
Don’t let the Honda CR-V’s exterior dimensions fool you because inside there’s more space than you’d expect. Clever packaging, solid ride and handling, lots of driver assistance tech, and great fuel economy with the available 1.5-liter turbo-four (28/34 mpg city/highway in front-drive guise or 27/33 mpg with all-wheel drive) make the Honda CR-V a well-rounded package that’s happy in the city or on the open road.
Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback was one of the first crossovers when it arrived in the 1990s as a lifted Legacy wagon. Fast forward to the present and it’s now Subaru’s best-selling model thanks to its standard all-wheel-drive system, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and a spacious interior that can accommodate a lot of gear and seat five people. The Subaru Outback also has roof rails that feature integrated racks, adding to its practicality. Expect the all-new 2020 model to be just as practical; this time with an available turbo engine.
Volvo XC90
Distinctively Swedish inside and out, the Volvo XC90 masterfully blends luxury and practicality. The XC90 offers three rows of seating, and its well-appointed interior easily accommodates five passengers and their gear—or seven, in a pinch. There’s also a 400-hp plug-in hybrid variant that offers you extra speed and efficiency without sacrificing practicality thanks to the lithium-ion battery being positioned in the center tunnel.
Honda Pilot
Recently refreshed, the Honda Pilot features smart interior packaging, making it highly flexible. From a center console that can fit a purse to second- and third-row seats that fold flat, the Pilot has a solution for everything from carrying big bulky items to storing your devices. If you have kids that need their space, the available second-row captain’s chairs should help prevent fights from breaking out in the backseats. There’s also an available rear entertainment system to pacify rear passengers on long stretches of highway.
Kia Telluride
Big, imposing, and boxy, the Kia Telluride hides a road-trip-worthy interior behind its rugged façade. Its premium-looking cabin offers seating for up to eight passengers and lots of cargo space with the second and third rows folded. Plus, with an 18.8-gallon fuel tank and up to 26 mpg on the highway (in FWD trim), it’s likely you’ll stop for a snack or restroom break before you have to fill up.
Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition won our last full-size SUV comparison test because it offers plenty of power, a spacious interior, a comfortable ride, and surprising efficiency for its size. In addition, the full-size Ford offers exceptional off-road capability that helps put it at the top of its segment. Need more space than the standard-wheelbase Expedition? Ford also offers the Expedition Max, which has more cargo space behind the third row.
Chevrolet Traverse
The Chevrolet Traverse is a large three-row crossover, and it’s also smartly packaged. With its 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6, the Traverse has plenty of power to get you where you need to go. Despite its size, the Traverse handles surprisingly well and offers a comfortable ride even with the optional 20-inch alloy wheels.
Toyota 4Runner
It may be old and not very fuel-efficient, but the Toyota 4Runner remains a solid all-terrain SUV that’s popular for venturing off the beaten path. Opt for the five-seat variant for the best combination of cargo capacity and passenger space. If your road trip takes you through some rugged country, you may want to consider the TRD models.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Jeep Grand Cherokee blends on- and off-road capability beautifully, making it the perfect rig for adventurers who like to get down and dirty on their road trips. Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee in a wide range of variants, including the 707-hp Trackhawk model. Want the most torque and range? Higher trims like the Overland, Trailhawk, and Summit can be had with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 that generates 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. A 24.6-gallon fuel tank should help the diesel-powered Grand Cherokee go farther than its gas-powered siblings between fill ups.
BMW X7
The BMW X7 is the largest model from the Bavarian brand to date, and it’s got nostrils to match. But huge-grille jokes aside, the X7 is a big SUV with seating for six or seven passengers. Opt for the second-row bucket seats to pamper your friends and family in the X7’s beautifully trimmed cabin.
Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
Although there’s a new generation coming before the end of the year, the current-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class remains a solid cruiser for long drives. Available in multiple flavors, including a potent 577-hp AMG variant, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is right at home cruising on the highway and coddling its occupants in luxury. Keep it to five passengers on road trips though, as the third row is small and you lose nearly all of your cargo space with all seats occupied.
Acura MDX
One of the best-selling midsize crossovers today, the Acura MDX drives smaller than it actually is and handles surprisingly well. We think the best version to take on a road trip is the 321-hp MDX Hybrid, which is EPA-rated at 26/27 mpg—the highest of the lineup despite its added power. Opt for the available second-row captain’s chairs for maximum comfort for your passengers.
Lincoln Navigator
No SUV exemplifies American luxury as well as the Lincoln Navigator. From its distinctive exterior styling to its lavishly appointed interior packed with cool touches like real wood trim and available blue leather upholstery, the Navigator goes over the top to separate itself from its competitors. The fully digital gauge cluster also features pleasing graphics that are will be a treat to watch over hundreds of miles.
Audi Q7
Audi interiors showcase some of the best build quality in the industry; the automaker does a nice job blending simplicity with cutting-edge technology. The Q7’s cabin is a great example, and would be a nice place to be on a long drive, regardless of whether you’re the passenger or driver. Even when equipped with every tech feature available, the Audi Q7 never overwhelms you with its gadgets and the interior always stays pleasant.
Subaru Ascent
The largest Subaru ups the ante on practicality with room for up to eight passengers, one USB port for every passenger, and 19 cup holders. Even with every seat taken, the Subaru Ascent still has plenty of space for a couple weekend bags, but knock down the third row and you’ve got enough space for five plus their luggage.

Toyota: No Supra for Detroit, SUV Lineup to Expand
If you were hoping to see the return of the Toyota Supra in January at the North American International Auto Show, you will be disappointed.
It’s too soon to unveil the much-anticipated sports car. Specifications are still being finalized and it’s not at production levels yet, said Jack Hollis, Toyota group vice president and general manager of the Toyota division in North America.
Even the name has not been pinned down. Supra is a candidate but not the only candidate. In fact, “there are other names that could be better,” Hollis told Motor Trend in an interview. Cressida? Celica? And there have been suggestions it could be badged Gazoo instead of Toyota, a nod to Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team.
Toyota collaborated with BMW to create a rear-drive sports car platform for the respective automakers: a Z4 replacement for BMW and a Supra replacement for Toyota, creating some economies of scale for otherwise low-volume vehicles.
Toyota Supra spy shot
We have already seen the next Z4, but the closest we’ve seen to a Supra is the FT-1 concept at the 2014 Detroit auto show and a lot of spy shots of a sports car testing on the Nürburgring. Both cars will be built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
Toyota made four generations of Supra from 1978 to 2002, initially as a derivative of the Celica. Its life was shorter in the U.S. where it left the market in 1998; it had already stopped production for Canada in 1986. It was known for its inline-six engines, and early versions boasted of an independent suspension tuned by Lotus. The third-generation Supra in 1986 split from the Celica which went front-wheel drive while the Supra remained rear-drive. A turbo was added in 1987, and by the fourth generation, it was a twin-turbo.
To partially fill the sports car gap, Toyota introduced the Scion FR-S in 2012 which became the Toyota 86 for the 2017 model year because the Scion brand was discontinued. There is no turbo planned for the 86 because it’s being saved for the Supra.
RAV4 styling cues
While the Supra replacement remains cloaked, Toyota continues to give us strong hints of some of the design cues for the next-generation RAV4 as well as possible new nameplates to expand the SUV lineup.
Toyota FT-AC
For exterior styling cues, look to the FT-AC (Future Toyota Adventure Concept) now on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept is a bit bigger than the current RAV4. Hollis sees room for a new crossover in the space between the current RAV4 and the Highlander SUV. There might even be room for two more crossovers.
Because there is room to expand the SUV lineup, while still needing to update existing vehicles, Toyota has shown three concepts since March that are fodder for both missions.
Concepts could become new nameplates
There is the FT-AC in L.A.; the smaller FT-4X (Future Toyota with all-wheel drive) shown at the New York auto show in March; and the TJ Cruiser van concept shown in Tokyo in October. All are ways for Toyota to explore design concepts and features to gauge public reaction and make production decisions.
The FT-AC has detachable foglights, cameras in the side mirrors, an integrated bike rack, and a formidable bin for a roof rack that has LED lighting on the back that can double as a flash for the cameras by using a mobile app. Images and video from the cameras can be uploaded via the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot. Toyota is gauging reaction at the L.A. show only—the FT-AC will not be on display in Detroit because it’s saving NAIAS for a vehicle from a different family (again, not the Supra replacement). Within six months, a decision is expected on whether a version of the FT-AC goes into production as a new nameplate or if aspects of it are incorporated into other new vehicles such as the RAV4 or 4Runner.
The concepts are based on the flexible Toyota New Global Architecture, or TNGA, that will underpin the bulk of the company’s front-drive, car-based, unibody vehicle portfolio and is scaled for all sizes and can accommodate hybrid powertrains.
Toyota FT-4X
No production decision on the FT-4X, the first to be shown, has been made yet, Hollis said. And while initial reaction to the FT-AC in L.A. has been more positive than anticipated, a decision is still about six months out.
Spirit of the FJ Cruiser
Each concept has raised the specter of a return, at least in spirit, of the cult classic FJ Cruiser that was discontinued in 2014 and was on a different platform. Hollis doesn’t dismiss the idea of a more car-based reincarnation of the name. He just says it’s too soon to put it on any of the concepts yet. For now, the exercise is “learning where we might fit in new product down the road.”
Toyota TJ Cruiser
As for the new RAV4, Hollis wouldn’t say when the top-selling next-generation SUV is due. Details of the RAV4 are all locked down, and Toyota will not make any changes now that it has seen its main competitor, the Honda CR-V, which is Motor Trend’s 2018 SUV of the Year. “Nothing about the CR-V changes our product,” Hollis said.
Meanwhile, at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit this week, Hollis noted the U.S. market is now a 64/36 split of truck/car sales while Toyota is selling closer to 59/41, showing potential growth with more SUVs. “We should be and we will be increasing in 2018,” he said.
Tundra development under way
On the truck side, the Tacoma is not ready for a refresh yet but work is underway to update the full-size Tundra. It’s still a couple years out, which means it will be after General Motors introduces a new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and after Fiat Chrysler introduces its new Ram 1500.
As for Toyota’s big bet on fuel cell vehicles while the rest of the industry has chosen batteries for their pure electric vehicles, Hollis said the Mirai FCV, Class 8 heavy duty fuel cell truck, and other FCVs that generate electricity onboard are better products than battery-electric vehicles that have to be charged.
The automaker has announced plans to build the first fuel cell power generation plant with a hydrogen fueling station in Long Beach, Calif. It will be ready in 2020.
Hollis is convinced the public would embrace FCVs if the necessary hydrogen infrastructure was in place. Toyota is working with the state of California as well as co-investors but progress is slow. The state has only completed half the promised number of hydrogen stations, he said.
Toyota will continue to pursue every degree of electrification, he said, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, FCVs, and yes, even pure battery electric vehicles although that is the one flavor of EV it doesn’t currently have.
