i’m reading kafka on the shore by haruki murakami right now and OH MY GOD THERES A TRANS CHARACTER!!!!! it really surprised me to see in a japanese book from the 2000s. trans men are really under depicted in media so it made me happy :)

the character, from as far as i’ve read, at least, is portrayed in a very respectful way. i was terrified his transness would go on to be sexualized, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. he talks about how he’s still human and acknowledges the struggles and discrimination he’s had to face.

anyway no i’m not crying.

i think this is why representation is so important. i’m a closeted trans dude in america, which is SO scary given my country’s current legislature and far-right politics. seeing someone like me in a book is comforting.
