2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and HD First Look: Towing Upgrades, Cheaper Diesel
Just two years after the GMT T1XX-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups launched, GMC is stirring the pot with useful new features designed to relieve some of the stresses of towing a trailer. That’s a great place to innovate, given that more than half of Sierra 1500 owners and 90-plus percent of Sierra HD owners report towing regularly. And there are a few other upgrades coming for 2021 as well.
Trailer Length Indicator
Flip on the turn signal of a 2021 GMC Sierra and the center display will show a blind-spot view of the side you’re heading toward, just like on lots of Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles, but GMC will shade the road surface in red hashmarks to indicate the area covered by the trailer (actually, twice the length of the trailer, for safety). If you can see a vehicle in this red-hashed area, better wait until it goes by or drops back out of this danger zone before changing lanes. The various bed, tailgate, and side-mirror cameras used to stitch together the 360-degree overhead view also inform this system as to the length of the trailer. The driver need not measure and enter any info to activate this system.
Jack-Knife Alert
Those same cameras keep a close eye on the proximity of the front corners of the trailer to the rear bumper of the truck and sound an alert (and/or vibrate the Safety Alert Seat) to caution the driver, who must then take action. The system will not apply the brakes to prevent a jack-knife impact.
Rear Trailer View Guidelines and Trailer-Angle Indicator
The existing Rear Trailer View system, which requires installing an accessory camera on the back of a conventional bumper-hitch box/camper/horse-type trailer and currently provides the Transparent Trailer function, gets augmented with those helpful guidelines to suggest the path the trailer is set to follow. Superimposed in the top right corner of the central display screen is an icon depicting the current angle of the trailer to the truck. This system is not currently programmed to work with gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer setups.
Rear Side View Enhancement
This split-screen view shows both sides of the truck and trailer split evenly down the screen when driving straight ahead. But when the truck begins to turn, the image showing the inside of the turn expands to fill more of the screen, so that you see the entire trailer and can monitor whether there’s any danger of running something over with the trailer wheels. For 2021 this view is available in reverse as well as drive.
Cargo Bed Zoom View with Bed Hitch Guidance
This new feature on heavy duty models promises to ease the task of aligning a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch, with the camera sensing the truck and trailer components that must align and drawing a line between them to help the driver steer the truck into position.
Other Enhancements to the GMC Sierra 1500
The 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six-cylinder engine we’ve raved about gets a price drop of $1,500, which positions it just $995 above the 5.3-liter V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management.
Availability of the MultiPro “Swiss-Army” tailgate extends to SLE and Elevation trims for 2021 along with a handful of new paint colors. The off-road-optimized AT4 trim grade gets a new 20-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tire fitment along with an off-road high-clearance assist step. Oh, and the above trailering goodies come bundled in the Technology Package (it costs $2,125 on certain models for 2020).
Other Enhancements to the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty
The popular Denali trim grade gets a new Black Diamond Edition package, which includes 20-inch high-gloss black wheels, power-retractable steps, and other unique features. Denali heavies also get HD Surround Vision and Bed View camera technology as standard for 2021. The MultiPro tailgate becomes standard on SLE and there are three new colors. Echoing changes on the 1500 AT4, HD versions of the AT4 get the option of a high-clearance assist step and 18-inch Mud Terrain tires. The above trailer tech comes standard on Denali models (accounting for more than half of sales); SLT and AT4 buyers must select “HD Surround Vision with Two Trailer Cameras” to receive Trailer Length Indicator, Jack-Knife Alert, Rear Trailer View with Guidelines and Rear Side View. For the enhanced Cargo Bed View, they need to select “Bed View Camera.”

Pickup Trucks Getting Huge. Got Problem With That?
A FEW MONTHS ago, on an ordinary day in an unremarkable
Costco
parking lot, I was nearly squashed by an unusually large pickup. Thank God I was wearing a mask.
As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.
He didn’t even see me.
Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,
Ford,
Chevy, GMC. They stood out like Percherons in a herd of Shetland ponies.
“ Are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? Both. The average pickup gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019. ”
What is going on here? When did pickups get so big? And why are XL-sized pickups so big now?
I know. Pickup trucks at Costco. Film at 11. Except that in April, U.S. sales of pickups surpassed automobiles for the first time ever—about 112 years, give or take. Trucks and truck-based sport-utilities now account for roughly 70% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.
How we came to be Pickup Nation is a longer story (cheap gas, the Chicken Tax, IRS Section 179, marketing). But this year, to help move the tin during the pandemic, U.S. auto makers laid out a bounty of discounts and cheap financing, including 0% interest for 84 months and deferred-payment plans.
“Pickups without a doubt benefited from the great deals,” said Mark Schirmer, spokesperson for market service providers Cox Automotive. “And the deals were particularly great for consumers buying expensive vehicles.” The data suggest these incentives also juiced a boomlet in XL-sized, heavy-duty pickups, otherwise known as ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups, for private use.
That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
The dimensions of Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ. Just how big?
Tumblr media
Photo: Chevrolet
81.85 in. wide
79.82 in. tall
249.95 in. long
It seems to be resonating. While sales of Silverado light-duty were off 18.6% in the second quarter, sales of the HD model sales were off less than a point. GMC’s light-duty Sierra was down 9.5%, while sales of our menacing new friend, the Sierra HD, were up 7.6% in the second quarter and 21.5% year-to-date.
Ford and
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
don’t break out HD sales from pickups overall. However, Ram’s average transaction price in the second quarter soared above $50,000, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of data from Kelley Blue Book. Ford F-Series sales fell 23% (to 180,825 units) but its ATP was mostly unaffected—$51,688, the highest among pickups.
In July, J.D. Power declared Sierra HD the king of the bro-dozers, placing it first in its 2020 U.S. APEAL Study of Large Heavy-Duty Pickups, which tracks owners’ excitement and emotional attachment in the first 90 days.
“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.
“ ‘The face of these trucks is where the action is, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.’ ”
Ask any kid with a crayon. If you draw the box in the middle bigger, you have to make the ones on the end bigger, too.
Which brings us to the 2020 Silverado HD—10 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the previous model. The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET…and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”
So watch yourself at Costco.
TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES?
Sizing up Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500HD
Tumblr media
Photo: Chevrolet
HIGH-END HOOD: Modern pickups like the Silverado 2500 HD LT with Z71 Off-Road Package appear huge not just because roofs have gotten taller (topping out around 80 inches), but because hoods have grown relative to a truck’s overall height.
KING-SIZE BED: The 2020 Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab with Standard Bed is 10.3 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the 2019 model.
GAUDY GRILLE: The vast chrome rictus of Chevy’s Silverado has been coolly received by some critics and customers. But Silverado sales are up, and there’s a booming business in aftermarket grilles.
A STEP UP: To assist you in boarding its very tall seat—which maintains proportionality with the height of the hood, the 2021 Silverado HD High Country is available with power running boards that automatically slide out to meet you.

MORE SWANK, LESS SCHLEP
How Ford’s uber-popular F-150 pickup has changed shape and style since 1995
PICKUPS AND SUVS have become the vehicles of choice for U.S. drivers over the last 25 years. Along the way, they’ve also become less trucklike, emphasizing comfort as well as capability. Take the F-150, the flagship of Ford’s F-Series, America’s bestselling vehicles 43 years running, which has morphed from rural work truck into a daily-driving people-mover as suburbanites ditched minivans in droves. The bestselling F-150 of 1995 was a rigid two-door set with a 6.5-foot bed; today’s bestselling F-150 has four doors, copious creature comforts, and a cargo box that’s a full foot shorter. —Aaron Stern

Buying a Used Truck? These 5 Rule the Worksite
Tumblr media
The best used trucks have come a long way from the days of basic bench seats and vinyl upholstery. Modern trucks are more powerful and more capable than ever, but they are also more comfortable, as automakers have responded to the changing demands of truck owners.
In this guide, we’ve highlighted five rugged trucks that are ideally suited for the worksite. If you don’t find the perfect work truck here, check out listings on CarGurus, where you can narrow down your search based on bed-size, cab-size, trim, engine, options, and more.
Tumblr media
1. Ford F-150
Years: 2017-2019 Trim: XLT SuperCab 8’ Bed 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 — $30,000
The Ford F-150 SuperCab has a clamshell door design, which means you have to open the large front door to open the smaller rear half-door. If you plan on mostly using the front seats, this is fine, but if you plan on hauling the kids around a lot, you’d do well to step up to the SuperCrew version of the F-150 with its full four-door setup.
If you want the convenience of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto look for a model from 2017 onwards with Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2017 F-150 comes standard with a 282-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and many XLT trims are available with one of the more powerful EcoBoost V6 engines. For 2018, there was a shakeup in the powertrain offerings, including a more powerful base V6, now making 290 horsepower.

Tumblr media
2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Years: 2017-2018 Trim: LT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $23,000 — $30,000
The previous generation of Silverado was coming to an end in 2018, which means Chevrolet added extra equipment to entice buyers who might otherwise have waited for the new model.
Step inside and not much has changed from this older truck to the latest version. The control layout is nearly identical, and the latter years of the LT trim come with the MyLink infotainment system that provides a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Unlike the F-150, which has clamshell doors on its extended cab truck, the extended cab version of the Silverado utilizes conventional second row doors. Many models also feature a front bench with a middle seat that folds into a center console.
While the standard engine is a 4.3-liter V6, those wanting more power should keep an eye out for a model with the 5.3-liter V8, which puts out a stout 355 horsepower. All versions of the Silverado come with the helpful bed corner steps.

Tumblr media
3. Ram 1500
Years: 2016-2018 Trim: SLT Quad Cab 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 – $27,000
Ram does things a bit differently from Ford and Chevy. The truck-maker acknowledged and responded to the idea that its pickups were being used for a lot of things other than worksite duties, such as commutes and road trips. As a result, the Ram 1500 does away with traditional leaf spring suspension, and instead features a multi-link setup at the rear to give it a more comfortable ride. But that doesn’t mean the Ram 1500 can’t handle a bit of work.
The Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 horsepower, but many vehicles from these years can be found with the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Some are even available with the EcoDiesel V6, which offers V8-levels of torque with improved efficiency.
Like the Silverado’s Double Cab, the Ram 1500’s Quad Cab uses conventionally opening second-row doors. Inside, the Ram 1500 uses high-quality cabin materials, and has easy-to-use controls. The SLT comes with power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trims come with a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (starting in 2018), and the RamBox cargo system. There’s no doubt that, for the money, the Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride, a strong base V6, and a spacious interior.
Search for a Ram 1500 on CarGurus
Tumblr media
2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain SLT
4. GMC Sierra 1500
Years: 2015-2016 Trim: SLT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $19,000 – $30,000
The previous generation of both GM trucks (Silverado and Sierra) have more conventional styling than their current counterparts.
The Sierra SLE is very similar to the Silverado LT, in that it is slightly elevated from the base truck and provides some welcome creature comforts. The SLE can be had with many different options; while most will come with the basic 6-speaker stereo and USB port, others may be found with the optional GMC IntelliLink infotainment system. This is similar to Chevy MyLink and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SLE trim comes standard with the 4.3-liter V8 engine, but many can be found with the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine. If you don’t need four-wheel drive, you can save a few dollars by choosing a rear-wheel-drive model.

Tumblr media
5. Toyota Tundra
Years: 2012-2016 Trim: SR5 Double Cab Approx price: $20,000 – $30,000
If you’re looking for something a bit different from the Big Three, the Toyota Tundra is big, spacious, and comes with standard V8 power for all the years we are recommending here. Despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth, Tundras hold their value well, with prices for the SR5 being close to that of Big Three trucks with similar bed/cab/powertrain configurations.
The standard engine in the Tundra is a 4.6-liter V8 making 310 horsepower, though many SR5s can be found with the optional 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. While it may seem advantageous to go for the less powerful V8 to save a few dollars, it is actually less efficient than the larger V8.
The Tundra has a very spacious cabin. All trims, including the base SR come equipped with the Entune infotainment system, which was updated for 2016. It features a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but while it is very easy to use, it does lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Dueling Diesel Duallies: 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD vs. 2019 Ram 3500HD
True confession: Most of us here at MotorTrend are car lovers who look forward to driving gigantic dually diesel trucks about as much as we look forward to aging into AARP discounts, root canals, and colonoscopies. So, this year, when we pulled on our big-kid pants and strapped into these two behemoths—the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali Duramax and the 2019 Ram 3500HD Limited Cummins—we brought along a bona fide truck enthusiast. Mark Williams knows the subtleties and secrets of this alien segment as encyclopedically as we know the car, light truck, and SUV segments we spend most of our year immersed in.
The Players
Qualifying as a mostly new diesel dually is the 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali Duramax, which features a stronger frame with improved payload and towing capacities. A longer crew-cab wheelbase also adds rear legroom in the new cab. Its revised bed is an inch closer to the ground, 7 inches wider inside (but not outside, thanks to new construction techniques), and features 10-12 corner tie-downs and GMC’s MultiPro six-function tailgate-within-a-tailgate. The 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 diesel carries over, but the 10-speed Allison transmission is new as is the availability of an auto-4WD system. Also new are myriad features aimed at easing the task of towing, including 15 camera views with an “invisible trailer” feature.
Slightly less new is the 2019 Ram 3500HD, which gets a fresh, fully boxed partially hydroformed frame comprised of 98.5 percent high-strength steel. A new front clip and rear styling deliver a claimed segment-leading 0.409 drag coefficient, but the box and cab mostly carryover, though the interior is upgraded to include most of the design and features that landed the Ram 1500 our Truck of the Year calipers last year (and the overall Ram HD lineup won for 2020). There’s also a record-breaking new 1,000-lb-ft high-output Cummins turbodiesel I-6 paired with a six-speed Aisin transmission. The chassis gets new Frequency Response Damping at all four corners to improve the unladen ride quality. Another ride-improving measure is Ram’s optional auxiliary rear air springs that allow the main leaf springs to be slightly softer (it adds $1,595 unless you order the $3,695 max tow package). This also greatly simplifies trailer attachment, as the truck can often lower itself to clear a gooseneck or bumper hitch.
Ride and Handling
We started out with some long drives on the freeway and short loops of city and twisty mountain roads, all unladen—the kind of driving we car folks understand. Turns out these both make terrible cars, but being forced to choose among them as trucks, features editor Scott Evans favored the Ram. “It rides substantially better than the GMC does. The front and rear end both feel better damped and more buttoned-down to the road. You’re not getting shaken up nearly as much in the cabin.” Testing director Reynolds concurred, conditionally “The ride is probably better overall, but when it does hit a bump the G level is quite noticeable and higher than in the GMC, though it’s more quickly damped.”
In terms of handling, road test editor Chris Walton found the Ram’s steering “lively and lightly weighted making it more fun on the twisty bits.” But in our simulated emergency lane-change maneuver Reynolds found the GMC to handle much more adroitly. “After some laps I was actually drifting a bit which is remarkable.” By contrast he found the Ram to be “a lot clumsier than the GMC; difficult to place with control.” Truck expert Williams found the GMC’s steering to be more precise and its brakes more linear in their pedal response, with the brakes “providing a level of comfort and predictability I didn’t feel with the Ram.”
These trucks are supposed to spend most of their lives working, so Williams hooked us up with 20,000-pound gooseneck trailers to sample (both heavy-duty trucks are rated for more than 30,000 pounds). Oddly enough, ride comfort supremacy varied. Loaded with a trailer, the front seat ride quality was deemed better in the GMC, while the Ram’s rear seat rode more comfortably. Walton found the GMC’s brakes more confident than the Ram’s with better initial bite and progression when towing.
Performance
Despite the Ram’s impressive 1,000-lb-ft torque rating (90 more than the GMC), the Sierra Denali’s 45-hp (and 2.6-lb/hp) advantage and that brilliant new 10-speed automatic helped it win every performance challenge we threw at these big trucks. Williams opined that the Ram’s engine controller limits torque from rest when unladen to prevent wheelspin, given its aggressive 4.10:1 axle ratio (the GMC runs a 3:42:1 axle). The Ram trails the GMC by 1.9 seconds to 60 mph and by 1.4 seconds and 6.0 mph through the quarter mile. But hitch a 20,000-pound trailer to each and the difference shrinks to 0.7 and 0.9 seconds, respectively, presumably with no torque-limitation on the Ram. The GMC also managed to accelerate from 35 to 55 mph up a 5-percent grade with a 17,330-lb trailer 2.2 seconds quicker than the Ram in 160 fewer feet. GMC’s Duramax/Allison powertrain is vastly quieter and smoother than the Ram’s Cummins/Aisin setup—but Williams reminded us that Cummins buyers really want to hear that big-rig sound. GMC even holds an 11-foot advantage in braking distance from 60 mph (stopping in 134 feet, unladen) and scooted through our simulated emergency obstacle-avoidance double lane change 0.6 second quicker (in 4.1 seconds).
As for bragging-rights, as configured our Ram heavy-duty truck can tow 34,130 pounds from a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch and 23,000 pounds off the bumper. Our GMC is limited to 31,180 and 20,000 respectively. Note that a regular-cab rear-drive GMC 3500HD Duramax dually is rated for 35,500 pounds, while 35,100 is as high as the equivalent Ram Cummins H.O. goes. Both trucks have a 14,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating, meaning the lighter GMC can carry 5,366 pounds—180 more than the Ram. Williams summed the GMC up thusly: “This platform, engine, and transmission combination might be the strongest, most civilized heavy hauler we have on the planet. This truck has no lag or dead spots in the power curve that I could feel.”
Comfort and Convenience
As decisively as GMC won the last category, Ram wins this one. Its top-shelf Limited trim’s palatial interior simply smites the GMC’s equivalent Denali. The seats were universally praised as offering more adjustment and being far more comfortable—even in the back, where the lower GMC cushion provided insufficient thigh support. Thoughtful touches abound in the Ram, from the jumbo screen and user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system to its roomy Ram Bins in the rear floor, to its many USB, USB-C, and 110-volt outlets sprinkled about the cabin. The GMC’s tiny stowage bins in the rear seatbacks are comparatively laughable. Our Ram Limited had adaptive cruise control (part of a $3,440 option package), but this increasingly ubiquitous fatigue-reducing feature is not offered on the GMC Denali.
In GMC’s favor are some pretty cool trailering gizmos, including a trailer-light testing app, loads of available cameras including an option to install cameras in and on a trailer to provide an “invisible trailer” rear view and monitor items or animals inside a trailer, while a blind-spot view shows the whole side of the rig whenever a turn-signal is activated when towing. The GMC’s mirrors motor outboard for better trailer visibility, whereas the Ram’s horizontal mirrors pivot up and out, providing power control of the small spotter mirrors. Opinions were split on which approach was superior. GMC offers a button that instantly lowers all four windows so you can hear spotters directing you while backing a large trailer, plus a lovely full-color head-up display that can’t be had in a Ram, and its lane-departure system buzzes one side or the other of the driver’s seat cushion whenever one of those outboard rear wheels strays over a line (as they frequently do).
Confidence
If you’re likely to spend long days in the saddle towing or hauling, which truck will make your job easiest? Well, in addition to the aforementioned adaptive cruise control, the Ram offers a highly effective exhaust brake with two settings: on, and automatic. The former provides max retardation you can hear and feel whenever you lift off the accelerator. Auto provides just enough engine braking to maintain the speed you were traveling when you lifted off the accelerator. The GMC’s exhaust brake is harder to hear and feel but worked in concert with Auto Grade Braking to maintain a set 65-mph speed descending the 5-percent Davis Dam grade just as effectively as the Ram’s setup (but it’s impossible to tell how much, if any, the friction brakes were contributing to that result). Walton felt the Ram tracked straighter and required less steering than the GMC to maintain its lane position while towing on the grade, but Williams “didn’t find the steering of the Ram 3500 to be as precise as the GMC’s.” Another data point in the Ram’s favor on the confidence front: In climbing up and down the Davis Dam grade, its cooling system topped out early at 168 degrees (F) and stayed there, while the GMC’s reached 190 at the summit.
GMC’s big advantage in confidence may be its automatic 4WD capability. Its new Magna Ultimax transfer case disconnects the front prop-shaft for better fuel economy in RWD mode and uses a wet-clutch to provide on-demand engagement of the front axle in Auto-AWD mode when rear-wheel slip is detected—a first in the heavy-duty segment and a comfort in changing weather conditions. There’s also a dedicated off-road and snow/ice mode in addition to the transmission’s tow/haul mode. Ram only offers tow/haul and part-time 4WD. Williams was sold on the GMC: “With big trailers, this is the one you’ll feel less exhausted by after a full day on the road.”
Conclusion: Which Diesel Dually Truck is Best?
We car lovers were sufficiently smitten by the Ram’s interior design and amenities, comfier seats, snazzier exterior styling, and superlative torque and trailering stats that we were willing to forgive the truck its pokier performance and more raucous powertrain. Williams pointed out that serious truckers favor investment in chassis and powertrain strength over embroidered interiors, and hence would likely find the GMC’s performance advantage compelling. He also shared that they only care about exterior styling to the extent that it serves the truck’s mission, so they’re willing to embrace features like the Sierra Denali’s giant garish grille as an essential element of the cooling system. The GMC was $7,280 less expensive as tested, but Williams openly worried whether “the front-end torsion bar setup might burn through tires when a truck like this runs the majority of its time with a full load.” By identifying that chink in the GMC’s armor he emboldened us car-lovers to vote the Ram as winner, but we’ll totally forgive serious truckers for choosing the GMC (or Chevy) Duramax dually.
2nd Place: GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali Duramax
Call us when you spiff up the interior and when we can tell the exhaust brake is working.
1st Place: Ram 3500HD Limited Cummins
The littlest big-rig tractor on the highway offers the market’s nicest ride, best interior, and amazing capability.

GMC Sierra HD 2020 a monster of nature ... human
San Diego, California - As part of the launch of the AT4 version of the GMC Sierra 1500 2019, the General Motors truck division took the opportunity to unveil the HD versions of its new Sierra pickup truck.
Tumblr media
GMC Sierra HD 2020 a monster of nature ... human
In essence, this is what consumers expect when the model hits the market this summer.
Design
Obviously, since we are talking about a new generation of products, we are talking about a completely revised style. Those who have seen what Chevrolet is preparing with the Silverado HD will be reassured; we went there more moderately at GMC. The pace is muscular, certainly, but it is successful. And, as is the custom, there are noticeable differences to distinguish versions. A simple look at the variations Denali and AT4 are enough to understand.
Towing
In the world of the HD pickup truck, towing is a big deal. Of course, we are referring here to capacities, but also to all the helpers that make life easier for homeowners.
In this regard, the GMC Sierra HD 2020 will offer a more user-friendly experience than ever before. One of the things that's catching your eye is the ProGrade Trailering system, which has 15 camera angles that let you see the load you're pulling from all angles. Then, a device that allows you to see behind as if the trailer did not exist. In fact, the cameras in question (those on the tailgate and those on the back of the trailer) work together to allow the driver to literally see through the towed load. The effect is successful and rather mind-blowing.

Capacities
Because this is the nerve of war in this category, the announced towing capacity was done with great fanfare. The latter is estimated at 13,607 kilograms, or 30,000 pounds in the case of the 3500 version. A demonstration to put our eyes on it was also organized for the occasion. We could see a double axle variant towing a load of 225,000 pounds over a short distance. It was reminiscent of the Toyota Tundra feat that towed the Space Shuttle a few years ago.
Put it in the category "my truck is stronger than yours".
Much more
Of course, the GMC Sierra HD (2500 and 3500) is more than that. whether in terms of innovation equipment, style, mechanics, lark!
Because you have to draw the line somewhere and avoid talking all day long about the features of this new GMC Sierra HD, here are some additional highlights.
Tumblr media
GMC Sierra HD 2020 a monster of nature ... human
- The Sierra pickup truck introduces a new type of hatchback that deploys in multiple ways by offering six functions. Named MultiPro, it is available on all variants of the model and is standard on SLT, AT4 and Denali grinds.
- A head-up display with a diagonal of 15 inches including a wealth of information (towing, speed, navigation, etc.)
- A mirror offering the possibility of broadcasting the image of a camera placed at the back.
- More space on board (the vehicle is a little bigger)
- A 6.6-liter V6 Duramax turbodiesel.
- A new 10-speed Allison automatic gearbox.
- An AT4 variant designed for off-road driving.
- Quantity of driving aids for towing.
