Buying a Used Truck? These 5 Rule the Worksite

The best used trucks have come a long way from the days of basic bench seats and vinyl upholstery. Modern trucks are more powerful and more capable than ever, but they are also more comfortable, as automakers have responded to the changing demands of truck owners.

1. Ford F-150

Years: 2017-2019 Trim: XLT SuperCab 8’ Bed 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 — $30,000

The Ford F-150 SuperCab has a clamshell door design, which means you have to open the large front door to open the smaller rear half-door. If you plan on mostly using the front seats, this is fine, but if you plan on hauling the kids around a lot, you’d do well to step up to the SuperCrew version of the F-150 with its full four-door setup.

If you want the convenience of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto look for a model from 2017 onwards with Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system.

The 2017 F-150 comes standard with a 282-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and many XLT trims are available with one of the more powerful EcoBoost V6 engines. For 2018, there was a shakeup in the powertrain offerings, including a more powerful base V6, now making 290 horsepower.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Years: 2017-2018 Trim: LT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $23,000 — $30,000

The previous generation of Silverado was coming to an end in 2018, which means Chevrolet added extra equipment to entice buyers who might otherwise have waited for the new model.

Step inside and not much has changed from this older truck to the latest version. The control layout is nearly identical, and the latter years of the LT trim come with the MyLink infotainment system that provides a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Unlike the F-150, which has clamshell doors on its extended cab truck, the extended cab version of the Silverado utilizes conventional second row doors. Many models also feature a front bench with a middle seat that folds into a center console.

While the standard engine is a 4.3-liter V6, those wanting more power should keep an eye out for a model with the 5.3-liter V8, which puts out a stout 355 horsepower. All versions of the Silverado come with the helpful bed corner steps.

3. Ram 1500

Years: 2016-2018 Trim: SLT Quad Cab 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 – $27,000

Ram does things a bit differently from Ford and Chevy. The truck-maker acknowledged and responded to the idea that its pickups were being used for a lot of things other than worksite duties, such as commutes and road trips. As a result, the Ram 1500 does away with traditional leaf spring suspension, and instead features a multi-link setup at the rear to give it a more comfortable ride. But that doesn’t mean the Ram 1500 can’t handle a bit of work.

The Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 horsepower, but many vehicles from these years can be found with the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Some are even available with the EcoDiesel V6, which offers V8-levels of torque with improved efficiency.

Like the Silverado’s Double Cab, the Ram 1500’s Quad Cab uses conventionally opening second-row doors. Inside, the Ram 1500 uses high-quality cabin materials, and has easy-to-use controls. The SLT comes with power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trims come with a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (starting in 2018), and the RamBox cargo system. There’s no doubt that, for the money, the Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride, a strong base V6, and a spacious interior.

2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain SLT

4. GMC Sierra 1500

Years: 2015-2016 Trim: SLT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $19,000 – $30,000

The previous generation of both GM trucks (Silverado and Sierra) have more conventional styling than their current counterparts.

The Sierra SLE is very similar to the Silverado LT, in that it is slightly elevated from the base truck and provides some welcome creature comforts. The SLE can be had with many different options; while most will come with the basic 6-speaker stereo and USB port, others may be found with the optional GMC IntelliLink infotainment system. This is similar to Chevy MyLink and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The SLE trim comes standard with the 4.3-liter V8 engine, but many can be found with the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine. If you don’t need four-wheel drive, you can save a few dollars by choosing a rear-wheel-drive model.

5. Toyota Tundra

Years: 2012-2016 Trim: SR5 Double Cab Approx price: $20,000 – $30,000

If you’re looking for something a bit different from the Big Three, the Toyota Tundra is big, spacious, and comes with standard V8 power for all the years we are recommending here. Despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth, Tundras hold their value well, with prices for the SR5 being close to that of Big Three trucks with similar bed/cab/powertrain configurations.

The standard engine in the Tundra is a 4.6-liter V8 making 310 horsepower, though many SR5s can be found with the optional 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. While it may seem advantageous to go for the less powerful V8 to save a few dollars, it is actually less efficient than the larger V8.

The Tundra has a very spacious cabin. All trims, including the base SR come equipped with the Entune infotainment system, which was updated for 2016. It features a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but while it is very easy to use, it does lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

GMC Sierra 1500 diesel et un marché aux puces unique au Québec

On entend de moins en moins parler de berlines mais en ce qui concerne  les camionnettes, ce ne sont pas les nouvelles qui manquent. Cette fois, dans mon cas, c’est du GMC Sierra 1500 dont il est question. En fait, ce n’est pas la première fois que j’en parle. Mais ce qui ressort dans ce reportage, c’est que la camionnette dont il s’agit cette semaine était mue par le tout nouveau six cylindres en ligne turbodiesel de 3,0 litres de GM. Vous avez bien lu, contrairement aux marques rivales d’importance, Ford et Ram, ce turbodiesel n’est pas un V6 mais un six en ligne!

Il en aura fallu du temps pour que GM réagisse face à cette concurrence car Ram a un V6 turbodiesel depuis déjà quelques années (il est reparti avec le scandale des diesel européens mais il est aussi revenu tout récemment!). Et il est disponible dans tous les modèles ou presque de Ram 1500. Ford nous a dévoilé un V6 diesel, lui aussi, il y a environ deux ans mais après nous avoir permis de le conduire dans des F-150 à finition de base, la division canadienne de la marque avait choisi de l’offrir que dans des finitions haut-de-gamme. Voyant un manque d’intérêt des consommateurs (les camionnettes étaient bien trop coûteuses), Ford s’est ravisé et il serait actuellement disponible dans des versions plus abordables! Et il semble que GM ait aussi compris le message alors que mon véhicule d’essai équipé de ce moteur était une version Elevation à cabine d’équipe et la motricité aux quatre roues sur commande. Le prix en était quand même élevé (un peu plus de 65 000 $) mais nettement plus abordable que bien d’autres pick-up de luxe qui m’ont déjà été confiés.

En ce qui a trait au design extérieur, je l’ai déjà amplement couvert dans le passé. Je vous laisse donc juger de vous-même grâce aux photos incluses. Vu que le diesel ne sera disponible qu’avec les grandes cabines à quatre portes, aussi bien le souligner. Il faut dire que cette décision va bien avec la grande popularité de cette configuration qui oblige alors une caisse courte de 5,5 pieds. Soulignons, en passant, l’heureuse initiative de GM d’avoir équipé cette camionnette d’un pare-chocs arrière avec marche pour accéder à cette caisse.

Le design intérieur est aussi pareil à celui déjà connu et quoiqu’il ne soit pas aussi flamboyant que plusieurs versions de la concurrence, il est agréable à l’œil. Encore une fois, je vous laisse en juger par vous-même tout en précisant qu’il y a beaucoup d’espace pour les jambes et tête des passagers d’arrière, même avec un toit ouvrant. Toutefois, si vous ne croyez pas vous promener hors-route avec ce Sierra, je vous suggérerais des marchepieds pour accéder à l’habitacle.

Revenons donc à la mécanique. Lorsque les ingénieurs de GM ont opté pour une configuration en ligne au lieu d’un V6 qui prend moins d’espace, ils ont répondu que le six en ligne exigeait moins de pièces mobiles, qu’il émettait un son plus agréable et plus représentatif des moteurs diesel de camion alors que l’on sait tous qu’un six en ligne procure une puissance initiale comparable et parfois même plus rapide qu’un moteur en V! Afin d’en alléger le poids, ce six Duramax (fabriqué au Michigan) fait appel à de l’aluminium pour le bloc-cylindres et la culasse (avec des chemises d’acier pour les cylindres). Toutefois, cette configuration de diesel peut produire une désagréable vibration qui est, sur les GM, atténuée par des supports de moteur à solénoïdes qui agissent un peu comme des amortisseurs.

Ce six cylindres (qui est profondément enfoui dans le compartiment moteur se prolongeant même sous le tableau de bord) s’est tout d’abord présenté sans que l’on en connaisse la puissance. C’est que GM voulait éviter que la concurrence revienne à ses tables à dessin pour hausser la puissance de ses diesels avant le dévoilement de celui de GM). Finalement, le six Duramax a été présenté avec une puissance de 277 chevaux et 460 li-pi de couple. Il n’en fallait pas plus pour cela provoque une guerre du couple («torque») comme cela se produit dans le créneau des grands pick-up plus robustes (Super Duty-Heavy Duty-HD). Ford a retenu les 440 li-pi de son V6 3,0 mais FCA a haussé le couple de son V6 3,0 de 420 à 480 li-pi !

La seule boîte de vitesses disponible avec ce Sierra 1500 turbodiesel est une Hydra-Matic à 10 rapports (développée conjointement avec Ford) alors que la transmission au sol est assumée par un boitier de transfert qui permet de passer des roues arrière aux quatre roues haut et bas rapport ou encore en mode traction intégrale automatique. Ce qui importe pour tant d’amateurs de camionnettes pick-up, c’est de vanter la capacité de remorquage de son véhicule. Dans le cas de ce GM turbodiesel, il faudra se «contenter» de quelque 9100 à 9400 livres (alors que Ford annonce 11 000 livres et FCA 12 000 livres pour son Ram). Toutefois, j’estime qu’au-delà de 9000 à 10 000 livres, il vaudrait mieux lorgner du côté de plus robustes pick-up, donc des F-250, GM 2500 HD ou Ram 2500 et plus, si l’on veut être satisfait et voyager…en toute sécurité et tranquillité d’esprit. Incidemment, les pneus originaux de mon GMC d’essai avaient été changés pour des General Grabber d’hiver que, somme toute, j’ai bien apprécié en toutes circonstances, même dans la neige profonde ou sur pavé froid ou glacé.

Sur la route

Lorsqu’on tente de lancer le moteur turbodiesel de ce GMC,  on risque d’être obligé d’attendre quelques secondes avant d’obtenir une réaction car le système électronique voudra «réchauffer» les cylindres (grâce aux bougies de préchauffage ou «glow plugs») avant d’activer le démarreur. Cependant, lorsque celui-ci se met en action, le moteur part tout en douceur. Oui, il est doux ce moteur et il n’émet que peu de vibrations et de bruit.

Une fois en vitesse, on remarque immédiatement que ce six Duramax est rapide. Si l’on insiste un peu sur l’accélérateur, il émet un son agréable (étudié par les ingénieurs de GM!) qui plaira surtout aux amateurs de voitures sportives!  En passant, passer du point mort à 100 km/h demande quelque huit secondes ce qui n’est pas mal pour un véhicule de plus de 5000 livres. Et la boîte à 10 rapports facilite les dépassements et ce, en toute douceur, sans que l’on en sente les changements de rapports.

En plus du silence de roulement, j’ai bien apprécié le comportement routier de la camionnette malgré une suspension avant qui pourrait paraître un peu molle aux habitués de camionnettes plus robustes. Sur la grand-route, c’est un véhicule très stable et très confortable, idéal pour ceux qui aiment voyager sur de longues distances. La visibilité en est excellente mais le freinage est un peu pointu dû au poids élevé du véhicule. Ce serait donc un choix idéal pour les amateurs de caravaning dont la remorque ne fait pas plus de 7000 à 8000 livres. En ce qui a trait à la consommation, j’ai obtenu une moyenne de 10,7 l/100 km (l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 10,3) en situation hivernale tant en ville que sur autoroute. Remarquable, n’est-ce pas?

Un tel GMC Sierra 1500 4RM Elevation affiche un prix de base de 51 998 $. Parmi les options importantes, mentionnons d’abord le moteur turbodiesel de 4830 $, l’ensemble Elevation de 3370 $ avec l’ensemble Preferred de 1695 $, le système d’avertisseurs au conducteur de 1295 $, le toit ouvrant vitré de 1325 $, le revêtement Bed Liner de 600 $, la peinture spéciale de 495 $, le contrôle intégré du freinage de remorque de 350 $ sans oublier la fameuse taxe d’accise de 100 $ pour le climatiseur (spécifions que GM offre une escompte de 500 $ sur les options) ce qui en vient à un total de 65 658 $ (plus les frais de transport et les taxes provinciales et fédérales). Intéressant, n’est-ce pas?

Des découvertes intéressantes à l’évènement Puces-Mécaniques

Il fallait y être pour vraiment le croire. Il existe un tout nouvel évènement hivernal pour les amateurs d’automobiles au Québec, les Puces-Mécaniques. Cet évènement est ni plus ni moins qu’un marché aux puces intérieur qui se déroule dans une salle d’exposition de Drummondville, celle de la Swift Galley sur la rue des Écoles. Déjà, la première édition de ce marché qui s’est déroulée le week-end dernier a été couronnée de succès. Selon un des organisateurs, les visiteurs attendaient à la porte déjà tôt le premier matin.

Pour ceux que cela auraient pu intéresser, il y avait sur place des vendeurs de pièces d’auto rares (j’y ai trouvé des tubulures d’admission (intake manifold) avec carburateur quatre corps en ligne de Boss 302 sur place), des revendeurs de pièces usagées, des spécialistes qui offraient leurs services professionnels, des collectionneurs revendant certaines de leurs pièces, des vendeurs de miniatures, de livres et j’en passe.

Avec un prix d’entrée raisonnable, une cafétéria sur place et des endroits de stationnement disponibles, voilà un élément qui nous reviendra certes bientôt mais en plus grande envergure. Si y participer vous intéresse, vous trouverez l’adresse de Puces-Mécaniques sur internet!  

Une pièce de collection?

Un de mes bons amis est venu me porter un livre (que je qualifierais d’unique) du titre de Automobile Repairing Made Easy (La réparation d’automobile facilitée) d’un certain Victor Pagé publié par la Norman W. Henley Publishing Company en…1920!

Abondamment illustré, ce livre ne serait que peu utile à notre époque vu que la technologie a grandement évolué depuis le temps. Même les outils qu’on y voit sont presque tous dépassés. Néanmoins, ce vieux bouquin est très intéressant à lire ou à consulter. Ça me rappelle un livre auquel j’ai participé durant les années quatre-vingt-dix, Les Réparations de votre auto avec Deanna Sclar chez Québecor. Ce livre contient encore quelques conseils d’actualité, surtout ceux de base (il n’est même plus disponible chez Amazon!). Mais on est désormais loin de notre technologie moderne.
