2025 GMC Yukon: A Look at the Refreshed Full-Size SUV
Tumblr media
The 2025 GMC Yukon features updated front and rear fasciae with new grille patterns and headlights giving it a more modern appearance. The available diesel engine sees a power boost, now delivering 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. The lineup introduces the AT4 Ultimate trim, which combines off-road capability with luxury features. A new 16.8-inch infotainment screen with a portrait orientation and updated digital gauge cluster enhance the cabin’s tech appeal. https://twitter.com/CARandDRIVER/status/1825654133023523317

Also Read: Acura Performance EV Concept Unveiled at Monterey Car Week The 2025 GMC Yukon features a bolder front end that draws inspiration from the GMC Sierra EV. The most noticeable change is the new set of stacked LED headlights, which are now taller and extend deeper into the redesigned bumper. These headlights are complemented by larger c-shaped running lights. The grille has been updated across the trim levels with each variant sporting a unique design. A new trim piece links the slightly elongated taillights and the quad tailpipes now feature a squared-off design. The overall side profile of the Yukon remains unchanged from the fourth-generation model introduced in 2020. However there are new alloy wheel options with sizes ranging up to 24 inches on the Denali Ultimate trim. The interior of the 2025 GMC Yukon has undergone a huge transformation centered around a new 16.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. This screen is one of the largest in its class and offers user customization options for functions such as navigation, audio and more. The screen's vertical orientation is a departure from the previous model's design and required a complete reworking of the dashboard. The dashboard has been entirely redesigned to accommodate the large touchscreen. The new layout includes vertically oriented air vents on either side of the screen. The digital driver display is housed in a Y-shaped enclosure. An optional 8.0-inch landscape screen is available for second-row passengers. This screen allows them to control climate settings and other functions. Despite the move towards a more digital interface 2025 GMC Yukon has retained a row of physical buttons at the base of the large touchscreen for commonly used features. The turbocharged 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six diesel engine now produces 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, an increase from the previous model's 277 hp and 420 lb-ft. The standard 5.3-liter V8 gasoline engine remains available, delivering 355 horsepower. For those seeking even more power, an optional 6.2-liter V8 engine produces 420 horsepower. Both V8 engines are paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon's maximum towing capacity remains unchanged at 8,400 pounds. This capacity continues to position the Yukon as a strong contender for those who need a full-size SUV with towing capabilities. The 2025 GMC Yukon can seat up to eight passengers or seven with the optional second-row captain’s chairs. The Denali trims provides a more luxurious interior with wood trim and leather upholstery. https://twitter.com/cacaca_car_/status/1824317161709478089 Also Read: Lamborghini Temerario: A 907bhp Hybrid Beast that Replaces the Huracan V10 The 2025 GMC Yukon provides generous cargo space with enough room for six carry-on cases behind the third row. With both the second and third rows stowed, the Yukon can accommodate 35 carry-on cases and the Yukon XL offers a massive 145 cubic feet of cargo space. The new centerpiece of the Yukon’s dashboard, this large, portrait-oriented display is easy to use providing access to GMC’s latest infotainment interface. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi-Fi hotspot are standard across the lineup. Available as an option, this premium sound system enhances the in-car audio experience. Standard Safety Features Include automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning, providing an extra layer of protection in everyday driving. These include lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and GMC’s Super Cruise hands-free driving mode, which are available on higher trims. A new addition for 2025, this system enhances visibility during nighttime driving, making it easier to detect obstacles and pedestrians in low-light conditions. The 2025 GMC Yukon lineup introduces the new AT4 Ultimate trim, which builds on the rugged characteristics of the standard AT4 model while adding luxury features typically reserved for higher trims. The AT4 Ultimate is designed for those who want to enjoy off-road adventures without sacrificing comfort and refinement. The AT4 Ultimate features exclusive Obsidian Rush trim, full-grain leather seats and Ash Burl wood accents. These premium materials create a luxurious cabin environment. The AT4 Ultimate is equipped with a front skid plate, 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires and an air-ride suspension that can raise the vehicle by up to two inches. While the AT4 Ultimate adds a new level of luxury to the off-road-focused AT4, the Denali Ultimate trim retains its position as the flagship model in the Yukon lineup. The Denali Ultimate offers even more luxury features including 24-inch wheels, a 22-speaker Bose Performance Series sound system and 16-way massaging front seats. The 2025 GMC Yukon comes with an array of advanced driver-assist systems many of which are now standard across the lineup. These include rear cross-traffic braking, side bicyclist alert, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking and intersection auto emergency braking. GMC offers Super Cruise hands-free driving as an option on the 2025 GMC Yukon. This system allows for hands-free driving on compatible highways. Additionally Night Vision with thermal detection is available, providing visibility in low-light conditions and helping to detect pedestrians, animals and other obstacles on the road. While official pricing for the 2025 GMC Yukon has not yet been announced, it is expected that the starting MSRP will be in the low $60,000 range. The most expensive model, the Denali Ultimate will likely exceed the $105,000 starting price of the 2024 version. The 2025 GMC Yukon will be available at US dealerships by the end of 2024. Production will take place at the Arlington Assembly plant in Texas and the vehicle will be ready for distribution across North America and other markets. https://twitter.com/Jalopnik/status/1825624917477569023 Also Read: Ford and Mazda Alerts Over 475,000 Vehicles Due to Dangerous Takata Airbags

2021 GMC Yukon First Test: Bigger—But Is It Better?
The Sierra pickup truck may be the heart of GMC, but the Yukon has always been the soul. The original GMC Yukon Denali became a pop culture icon soon after its debut for 1999—given as much street cred as its big brother, the Cadillac Escalade. The new, fifth-generation 2021 GMC Yukon attempts to reinject that bit of cachet into the line with an updated Denali and a new-to-the-Yukon AT4 trim, both of which we had a chance to review.
Like the prior four generations, the 2021 GMC Yukon and extended-wheelbase Yukon XL share much with the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. But from the curbside view, at least, GMC has successfully differentiated the conservatively styled 2021 Yukon from the edgy Tahoe and Suburban and blocky Escalade, especially in the SUV‘s AT4 trim. The updated Yukon Denali takes things a step further, sporting both distinctive sheetmetal and a trim-specific dashboard, leaving the AT4 and the rest of the Yukon line to essentially share a cabin design with the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.
New GMC Yukon Specs: What You Need to Know
Like humanity, the Yukon, Tahoe, and Escalade are all the same under the skin. Riding on a new hybrid unibody-on-frame platform, with—for the first time in Yukon history—an independent rear suspension, the Yukon grows by 4.9 inches in wheelbase and 6.1 inches in overall length, allowing GMC to significantly increase third-row passenger legroom and cargo capacity (the not-yet-driven Yukon XL gets stretched by 4.1 inches in wheelbase and 0.9 inch in overall length compared to before). Power in our Yukon AT4 test model comes courtesy of GM’s largely carryover 5.3-liter V-8, which makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a new-for-2021 10-speed automatic transmission, relegating the old six-speed slushbox to the cheapest of GMC Sierra pickups. Four-wheel drive is standard on the off-road-oriented Yukon AT4, though all- and rear-wheel drive are available elsewhere in the lineup.
The Yukon Denali shares its powertrain with the Escalade—a mostly unchanged 6.2-liter V-8/10-speed-auto combo with four-wheel drive. Power remains the same as 2020, with 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. For 2021, the 6.2-liter V-8 is exclusive to the Yukon Denali, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it show up under the hood of the Yukon AT4 in the coming years as the automaker attempts to expand and elevate that particular sub-brand, which stands as the rugged and sporty alternative to the Denali’s upscale pretensions.
Not coming to the Yukon AT4 (but available for the Yukon SLE, SLT, and Denali) is the new-for-2021—and as of yet untested—Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0-liter I-6. The engine and its associated hardware, which makes 277 horsepower and 420-lb-ft of torque, won’t fit in the Yukon AT4 due to its distinct front fascia, which features a nipped-and-tucked chin to boost the off-roader’s approach angle.
Optional and equipped on both our Yukon AT4 and Denali examples is arguably the biggest news for 2021: GM’s new Air Ride adaptive suspension system. Combining electromagnetic dampers with air springs, the new tech blends the ability of the system’s MagneRide dampers to rapidly adapt to various road and drive conditions with the air suspension’s variable ride height and load-leveling capability in an effort to further improve the utility of what’s already an exceptionally versatile SUV.
How Does the 2021 GMC Yukon Drive?
Despite the models’ different powertrains and use cases, the Yukon AT4 and Yukon Denali drive pretty similarly. Somewhat unexpectedly, though, the Yukon AT4, equipped with the smaller V-8 and the optional Air Ride suspension (but saddled with 20-inch wheels and off-road tires) was the more enjoyable model to wheel around. We’ve never been fans of GM’s 5.3-liter V-8, which in the last-gen Yukon seemed to be better at making noise than increasing forward momentum, but the new 10-speed auto seemingly cures those ills. Its tight ratio spread makes the most of the 5.3’s segment-worst power output and really helps it punch above its weight.
Like a teacher’s pet, the 10-speed always has the right answer (and gear) for the task at hand. The Yukon AT4’s powertrain even handles a trailer well, with a decent amount of passing power on tap and exceptional shift behavior from the transmission when dragging along approximately 4,000 pounds’ worth of Airstream camper. That was about half of the AT4’s 8,200-pound towing capacity.
The Yukon Denali’s big 6.2-liter V-8 is no slouch, either, but at the same time, it doesn’t quite feel as lively as does the 5.3. Part of that, no doubt, has to do with the couple hundred extra pounds the Denali is carrying, but we suspect taller transmission gearing in the Denali may be partially to blame, too. Unless you’re towing heavy trailers regularly, Yukon AT4 buyers needn’t feel like they’re missing out on the 6.2-liter V-8.
When it comes to ride quality, the Yukon AT4 gets the slight edge on its big brother, while the Denali scores points back for handling. Both Air Ride–equipped Yukons are prone to transmitting more impact harshness into the cabin than expected, but aided by its smaller 20-inch wheels and cushier tire sidewalls, the AT4 dispatches the rough stuff a bit better. The Denali, riding on optional 22-inch wheels, has a tendency to find bumps and rough patches the AT4 doesn’t notice. Although its off-road-oriented tires help improve the Yukon AT4’s ride quality, the taller rubber also hurt its steering feel, which is direct but numb. The Denali, on the other hand, is pleasantly competent on a good road when in Sport mode, with quick, progressive steering, good feedback, and minimal body roll.
With no added power but some added weight, it wasn’t surprising to see where the test numbers fell when we hooked the Yukon AT4 up to our gear at the test track. The new Yukon AT4, weighing in at 5,912 pounds, fell just behind the pace of the last Yukon we tested, a 5.3-powered 2015 Yukon SLT 4×4 weighing in at 5,633 pounds. The new Yukon accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds at 90.6 mph, whereas the old model needed 6.9 seconds to hit 60 mph and 15.4 to clear the quarter-mile at 90.0 mph.
Our 60-to-0-mph braking test took 129 feet for the 2021 Yukon and 125 for the 2015 model. (For the record, the brakes on both Yukons we evaluated felt wooden and stiff, with little initial bite.) Thanks to a stability-control system that isn’t fully defeatable (a rarity in a GM), the new Yukon also performed worse than its predecessor on the figure eight; it lapped our course in 30.6 seconds at 0.51 g average, versus 27.5 seconds at 0.65 g. We’d expect a non-AT4 5.3-powered 2021 Yukon to improve by a second at most on the figure eight, and remain steady in the zero-to-60 and quarter-mile tests. Similarly, we haven’t yet tested the Yukon Denali, but we’d expect it to shed about a second from the AT4’s acceleration and handling results.
Despite the new transmission, the 5.3-liter Yukon’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is unchanged at 18 mpg combined; Denali four-wheel-drive models drop 1 mpg this year to 16 mpg combined.
What’s the GMC Yukon’s Interior Like? How’s Its Cargo Space?
The new Yukon’s interior is a significant step up from the fourth-gen model, but that’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement. First the good: It’s positively enormous. The new Yukon is the first of its kind to comfortably fit adults in its third row. It’s also the first to successfully fit passengers in the third row and a substantial amount of luggage—in this case, four airline-friendly rollaboard bags (done without stacking the bags on top of each other, too).
As far as design goes, the Yukon Denali’s is more successful than the AT4’s. With cross-stitched baseball-glove-like leather, ash trim that’s as nice to touch as to look at, and a remarkably crisp high-resolution infotainment display, the Yukon Denali mostly feels the luxe truck that it is. Because the Denali makes up the bulk of Yukon sales, GMC decided to make its dash design exclusive, leaving the rest of the Yukon line (including the AT4) to share most of its cabin with the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban lineup. We think that was probably a mistake. Despite the addition of aluminum trim, acoustic glass, and GMC-exclusive upholstery patterns, the Yukon AT4’s cabin doesn’t look or feel noticeably higher-quality than the less expensive Tahoe and Suburban Z71 models we also had on hand for evaluation. GMC notes Yukon customers don’t cross-shop with Chevrolet, but that doesn’t mean the two SUVs shouldn’t be compared.
Despite the Yukon Denali’s unique dash, both it and the AT4 still share far more with the Tahoe line than they ought to. Switchgear, for instance, on the Yukons is identical in both placement and quality to the Tahoe line. Worse, the Yukon shares the Chevy SUV’s shotgun approach to button placement. We wish some thought—literally any thought—was put into how and where the Yukon’s controls were placed. Tailgate, sunroof, center console, and seat buttons, for instance, are on the ceiling. Drive modes, 4WD selector, headlights, heads-up display controls, start-stop, parking—basically everything else—is haphazardly placed to the left of the steering wheel, below the driver’s eye line. The most annoying part is that the headlight, drive mode, and suspension height knobs are literally identical (they’re actually repurposed HVAC knobs, but we digress), and so if you’re trying to adjust drive modes by feel—like to switch into Sport mode, for instance—there’s an equal chance you’ll turn your headlights off, or raise the suspension instead.
How Much Does the 2021 GMC Yukon Cost?
Pricing for the 2021 Yukon doesn’t change much from past years, with the SUV’s base price rising just $100 to $51,995. Yukon Denali prices don’t shift much, either—rear-drive models start at $69,695, a $700 increase versus last year. The Yukon AT4 starts at $66,095. All-wheel drive is a $3,000 extra on all trims but the AT4, where four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case is standard (the Denali can be had with rear- or four-wheel drive, while four-wheel drive can be added to all-wheel-drive-equipped Yukon SLE and SLT models by adding the $565 Max Trailering package). The long-wheelbase Yukon XL adds another $2,700 to the GMC’s list price.
The as-tested price for our loaded Yukon AT4 was $76,155, whereas our loaded Yukon Denali with 4WD stickered for $84,720. It bears repeating: An identically equipped (save for the sheet metal) Chevy Tahoe Z71 can be had for $4,320 less than the Yukon AT4, while a Tahoe High Country equipped similarly to our Yukon Denali tester can be had for $81,840. Also worth pointing out: An Escalade equipped similarly to our Yukon Denali tester will set you back $96,545.
Although more separates the Yukon lineup from its stablemates than ever before, the buyer unafraid of cross-shopping both in-house GM brands and rival automakers may find a better value elsewhere. That being said, the 2021 Yukon is the most convincing effort we’ve seen from GMC in quite a long time. It remains to be seen whether the new Denali and AT4 can capture the public’s imagination in the same way the original Yukon Denali did more than two decades ago, but the fifth-gen model is certainly a step in the right direction.

The Escalade Dilemma – The Big Picture
New York–based Cadillac might portray itself as cool, edgy, and urban these days, but it can’t live without a vehicle whose DNA is deeply encoded with heartland perceptions and values. A vehicle that, like the hapless Cimarron, started life as a cynical corruption of a brand that once proclaimed itself “The Standard of the World.” Yes, we’re talking about the Escalade. The original Escalade was a GMC Yukon Denali—itself a fancy Chevy Tahoe—with wreath-and-crest badges and some wood ’n’ leather inside. It was GM’s panicked riposte to the Lincoln Navigator, the gussied-up Ford Expedition that helped topple Cadillac from its position as America’s No. 1 luxury brand for the first time in history. Today’s Escalade more deftly riffs on current Cadillac design cues, and the interior is laden with luxury car prerequisites. But no amount of window dressing can disguise the fact that it remains a truck in a tux, obviously related to quotidian Tahoes and Yukons. That hasn’t stopped it from outselling all of Cadillac’s car lines in the U.S., and by a considerable margin at that. Combined Escalade and Escalade ESV sales through August this year made it the brand’s No. 2 model line—only behind the much less expensive XT5 crossover. As the priciest Cadillac you can buy, the Escalade is also hugely profitable. Most of the $24,000 to $40,000 price premium the Escalade commands over a fully loaded Tahoe is pure gravy. GM’s bean counters love this thing. There’s no polite way to say this: An SUV that’s more truck than limousine is Cadillac’s flagship vehicle, its halo model. That sound you hear is Brooklyn marketing hipsters sobbing into their Aperol spritzes. Over the past decade, Cadillac planners have looked several times at the idea of moving the Escalade off GM’s truck architecture. But the math has proven inescapable, so the next-gen Escalade will also share hardware and key components with forthcoming Tahoe and Yukon models. Well-placed GM insiders insist Caddy’s flagship will benefit from the fundamental improvements in performance, refinement, and quality being baked in across GM’s next-gen pickup and full-size SUV architecture. The new Escalade will get independent rear suspension and air springs that will deliver significant improvements in ride quality and overall refinement. Ditching the current model’s heavy, cumbersome live axle will also enable GM designers to lower the floor at the rear, allowing—at last—decent legroom for third-row passengers. GM’s 420-hp, 460-lb-ft 6.2-liter V-8 will remain the workhorse engine, but Cadillac will likely also offer a supercharged V-8 similar to that used in the CTS-V, tuned to deliver more than 600 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will drive through the new 10-speed automatic jointly developed by GM and Ford. (It’s still odd to hear that, I know.) The next Escalade should be the best version ever, though it remains to be seen how thoroughly Cadillac will sweat the details. The current model’s clunky and clumsy analog column shifter, something straight out of a Silverado pickup, is one obvious gargoyle that needs slaying. Escalade drivers ought to be able to shift between park, reverse, and drive with their fingertips instead of having to arm wrestle a relic from the 1960s. Regardless, the next Escalade will be a stopgap. No matter how well dressed or how well engineered, a body-on-frame truck simply cannot deliver the performance, ride, handling, quietness, interior room, and energy efficiency customers outside North America will demand if they are seeking a legitimate alternative to a full-size Range Rover or Mercedes-Benz GLS. In the meantime, Cadillac is racing to determine exactly what sort of vehicle can finally redefine one of America’s great luxury brands in the 21st century. This much is clear: With the market for large sedans collapsing, it will be a unibody crossover of some kind. Tougher emissions rules mean it will likely be available with a high-performance hybrid powertrain or even be fully electric drive from the get-go. To make it happen, though, Cadillac needs its truck in a tux to keep the cash registers ringing well into the 2020s.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Swallow Your Pride – This Beats an SUV
For most Americans, a minivan is the best people-hauler for the demographic called parents-with-kids-and-all-their-crap. And the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan serves the demographic better than virtually every other sports utility vehicle or minivan. You can have a Pacifica sort-of-inexpensive or trimmed in leather, with or without hiding stowable second-and-third-row seats, or as a plug-in hybrid, all with third-row seats usable by adults. Come 2021, you’ll again be able to get the Pacifica with all-wheel-drive.
The Pacifica handles relatively well. The plug-in hybrid goes 32 miles on battery power and has a battery-plus-engine cruising range of 520 miles. It is roomier and lighter than a full-size SUV. On the downside, some useful driver assists are optional on the Pacifica. Pacifica’s reliability from recent years past is not on par with competing minivans, especially from Toyota and Kia.
The Pacifica is one of the few three-row vehicles comfortable in all three rows.
On the Road with Pacifica
I drove an upscale Pacifica Hybrid with a full suite of driver assists, the latest UConnect 4 infotainment system, and black leather seats with contrasting stitching. It feels roomier than a full-size SUV because it’s roughly the size of the full-size Dodge Durango SUV, 203.8 inches versus the Durango’s 201.2. With a shorter nose and without the sloping rear of some SUVs, plus a couple more inches of width than Durango, there’s a lot more room in the Pacifica for people and cargo inside.
Handling is pretty good for something that weighs a handful of pounds shy of 5,000. It gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds via a 3.6-liter V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine (higher efficiency, lower peak power) and an electric motor that net 260 hp, all driving the front wheels. Once in a while during testing, the nine-speed automatic was slow to shift or thunked into the next gear. The shifter is a rotary knob on the dashboard. Most reviewers hate shifter knobs (or buttons). I say: They leave more room for cupholders and phones on the dash or console. Nobody manually shifts a minivan. This knob would work better if it was coated in grippy rubber.
The infotainment system and navigation, called UConnect and now up to version 4, continues to be one of the easier packages to comprehend. The display is 8 inches diagonal, which is good, but a 10-inch display would be nicer (likely on 2021 models).
2020 Chrysler Pacifica.
The Pacifica excels three ways:
Around town, driving is almost zero-cost because the 16-kWh battery tucked under the floor lets you cover 32 miles of commuting to work, car-pooling, and handling daily driving tasks. It will recharge overnight on 120-volt power, or in about two hours at 240 volts. Many owners won’t burn any gasoline most days of the week, although maybe you might, because there’s no button to force the Pacifica to run electric-only before going to the combustion engine. So Chrysler uses an algorithm to decide when to use what. In a week of driving, I averaged 29 mpg, close to Chrysler’s 30 mpg EPA overall rating, which is quite good for a 2.5-ton vehicle.
Second, on longer weekend or vacation trips, you get up to 520 miles of driving. You only have to fill up once a day. Yes, the kids have to go pee more often than that, but the interstate service area choreography of one parent taking the kids to the bathroom while the other heads for the fueling islands, then meeting up while the refueler parent dashes back to the restrooms, seems to save very little time.
For weekday carpooling tasks and weekend family trips, you can fit up to seven people; the middle row is always two buckets, not a bench. And everybody, in every seating position, is plenty comfortable, especially in the hybrid. The under-floor battery means there’s no space for the stowable (Stow ‘N Go) seats that fold into the floor, but those stowable seats are thinner and less comfortable. The comfier PHEV’s seats are heavy to take out, though.
The Pacifica has upscale finishes on most trim lines. The UConnect 4 center stack display is 8.4 inches.
Lots of Trim Lines
Shopping for a Chrysler Pacifica starts with “Where do I start?” There are eight Pacifica gas-engine versions, five of them called Pacifica Touring (gut none called Pacifica Car Pooling); plus six Pacifica Hybrid versions; plus more two gas-engine entry model Pacificas, only they’re called Chrysler Voyagers (explanation below). As for the hybrid models, there are three Touring models (Touring, Touring, 35th Anniversary Touring L) and three Limited models (Limited, Limited 35th Anniversary, Limited Red S). The hybrid 35th Anniversary (of the first Chrysler Corp. minivans) and S models are upholstery, badging, and paint variants. If this sounds confusing, it is, and there’s not much on the Chrysler Pacifica website that helps you see what features are on what trim lines.
The least costly hybrid, the Touring, is $41,490 including $1,495 freight. That is $6,250 more than the gas-engine Touring, but you are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, so really it costs less. The Touring gets you power-sliding doors, heated mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, three-zone climate control, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB jacks. Driver assists are blind-spot warning/rear-cross-traffic-alert (same system) and rear parking sonar. No forward-facing driver assists.
The Touring L, $45,780 including freight, may be the sweet spot: It adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. But it, too, lacks a full range of driver assists.
The Limited, $47,340, is where you can add a fuller array of driver assists. It has nicer leather, vented front seats, navigation, UConnect Theater (rear entertainment), and 20-speaker audio. For $995 you can add the Advanced Safety Tec Group: stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, advanced forward collision warning, advanced lane departure warning, parallel/perpendicular parking assist, front sonar (rear is standard) with auto-stop, and surround cameras. You can also add a $1,895 panoramic sunroof.
The top-line Hybrid Limited Red S fully optioned runs $52,000, before tax credit.
Be still my heart: the 1984 Dodge Caravan, enabler of the soccer mom demographic.  It’s also 28 inches shorter than today’s Pacifica.
The Shrinking Minivan Market
Minivans as we know them date to the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, boxy vehicles, some with woodgrain wrap on the sides. They helped keep Chrysler Corp. alive. (The vehicles, not necessarily the woodgrain.) Sales of minivans, all brands, peaked in 2000 with 1.4 million sold, 8 percent of the year’s 17 million sales. Most had three rows of seats, and even the third row was reasonably comfortable at a time when there were far fewer SUVs. And they drove like cars at a time when SUVs didn’t.
Minivans were popular with college-educated boomer parents in the suburbs who drove their children to sports practices a lot, had similar-to-each-other buying patterns, got involved in the PTA, and tended to vote. Demographers called them soccer moms or soccer parents, which annoyed the heck out of them, more because soccer mom was too easily understood as well as misunderstood. In retaliation – “how dare these people reduce me to two words” – they switched to SUVs that were bigger, top-heavier, tipsier (until electronic stability control came along), cost you 3-5 mpg in fuel economy, and lacked room for teens in row three. Nothing like seeing six kids in shorts and cleats disembark from a GMC Yukon Denali, not a Pacifica, to prove you’re not a soccer dad or mom.
Fast forward to 2019, and sales of the five minivan models (plus leftover Chrysler Town & Countrys) amounted to just over 400,000, or 2 percent of the (again) 17 million sales of light vehicles. The best-seller Dodge Grand Caravan gets the majority of sales in fleet markets, making the Honda Odyssey and Pacifica the top two sellers to individuals.
Minivan Model 2019 Sales 2018 Sales Change Dodge Grand Caravan 122,648 151,927 -19% Honda Odyssey 99,113 106,327 -7% Chrysler Pacifica 97,705 118,322 -17% Toyota Sienna 73,585 87,671 -16% Kia Sedona 15,931 17,928 -11% Chrysler Town & Country 5 6 -17% Totals 408,987 482,181 -15%
Between 2000 and today, more than a dozen minivan brands departed the market: Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Venture, Chrysler Voyager, Ford Freestar, Ford Windstar Cargo, Mazda MPV, Mercury Monterey, Nissan Quest, Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Montana, Saturn Relay, and Volkswagen Routan. The one significant entrant is the Kia Sedona in the 2015 model year.
In 2020, the aging Dodge Grand Caravan goes away this spring, to be replaced by the Chrysler Voyager, effectively an entry-level Pacifica. That will likely be the rental-fleet minivan. Insiders say the two-name strategy helps the residual value of the Pacifica. Any time more than half the sales for a model go into fleets, it depresses resale prices.
The 2020 Pacifica measures 203.8 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 69.9 inches high. This allows for superb cargo space: 32.3 cubic feet with all seats used, and 140.5 cubic feet with the middle and rear seats down.
Should You Buy?
If you do a lot of urban driving, you’ll likely love how much of it can be on electricity, where the cost of electricity (low) is equivalent in cost to the Pacifica getting 82 mpg on gasoline. It is roomy on legroom as well as side to side shoulder room, so you really can get three across in back.
The Pacifica scores well on IIHS safety tests: good overall on crashworthiness, and a Top Safety Pick. However, it’s light on standard driver safety assists: Blind spot warning is standard, plus government-required features such as a rear camera. If you want a fuller range of assists that help especially on long highway trips, you’ll really want one of the Limited trims and the features of the Advanced Safety Tec package.
Only when you reach the Limited are significant additional driver assists offered in an options package.
Against the competition, the same money, roughly, will get you the sensational Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade three-row SUVs with less space and a premium-car fit and finish. Against other SUVs, the Honda Odyssey is well-thought-out and so is the Toyota Sienna, which is the only minivan to offer all-wheel-drive. The Kia Sedona, less flashy, has rock-solid build quality and reliability on its side. Consumer Reports rates recent Sedonas at 3, 4 or 5 of 5, while the Pacifica is rated at 1 or 2 out of 5.
The Chrysler Pacifica has been out since the 2017 model year. It gets a significant refresh for the 2021 model year with all-wheel-drive offered on the gas-engine Pacifica only (Chrysler last had an AWD minivan in 2004). Chrysler could have redirected the PHEV’s electric power to the rear wheels for all-wheel-drive (as Toyota has done to create AWD on a front-drive car), but chose not to. There’s a new, version 5, of UConnect Drive by Android software. And there’ll be an additional trim line at the top end, called Pinnacle. To keep up with the competition, the 2021 Pacifica will make standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning/lane-keeping assistance.

New Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer to Start Production in 2021
DETROIT, Michigan (Reuters)—Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said on Tuesday it will invest $4.5 billion in five plants to build new models of Jeeps to compete more effectively in the lucrative market for full-size, three-row SUVs currently dominated by rivals General Motors and Ford.
The plants will also create 6,500 jobs in Michigan, Fiat Chrysler (FCA) said in an announcement around three months after GM said it would not allocate new products to five plants in North America that mostly produce less-popular sedan models. GM workers and politicians, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have blasted GM for the decision, which is likely to close those plants, one of which recently received a one-year reprieve.
The move also comes at a time when the U.S. market looks set to decline, with 2019 industry-wide new vehicle sales expected to fall below 2018 levels. But FCA Chief Executive Officer Mike Manley said in a conference call with reporters that the company’s investments are focused on SUVs, an area “forecasted to continue to grow.” He added that 60 percent of SUV sales are for three-row models “and we don’t have a three-row offering . . . and this is a segment that I’ve been very interested in for some time.” The full-size SUV segment is dominated by GM’s Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade, which had about double the sales of Ford’s Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator in 2018.
FCA‘s plans include turning an engine plant in Detroit into an assembly plant. The company has also reversed a decision to shift production of heavy-duty trucks from Mexico to Michigan in 2020, freeing up the Michigan facility to produce Jeep models. “I look at today’s investment as a reward for the efforts of our membership and a show of confidence that the members of the UAW are the best auto workers in the world,” United Auto Workers union Vice President Cindy Estrada said in a statement.
The automaker said plans included investments to enable three Michigan plants to produce hybrid and fully electric Jeep models. Manley said those hybrid models or electric models could be available as soon as late 2021, but will be rolled out based on consumer demand.
“Unlike Anything We Have Seen”
FCA plans to start construction on the new $1.6 billion Detroit facility in the third quarter of 2019 and start production of a new three-row SUV by the end of 2020, followed by a revamped version of the Grand Cherokee in the first half of 2021. The plans also include a $900 million investment to modernize and retool another Detroit plant to make the Dodge Durango and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The two investments come around six years since Detroit filed the largest ever U.S. municipal bankruptcy and will bring nearly 5,000 jobs to the city. FCA and the city of Detroit have signed a memorandum of understanding that provides 60 days to follow through on the agreed acquisition of land for the new plant. “This opportunity is unlike anything we have seen in decades,” Detroit mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement, adding that the investments would take place “without displacing a single resident.”
The automaker also confirmed it will also start production of its Wagoneer model and the Grand Wagoneer, a new three-row luxury SUV set to compete with the Range Rover lineup, at a plant in Warren in the first half of 2021. Early last year, FCA had said it would move heavy-duty truck production to that plant, but that will now remain in the company’s Saltillo, Mexico, plant. FCA will invest $1.5 billion in the Warren plant—up from $725 million that automaker had not publicly disclosed.
