A Comprehensive Guide to Common GMC Car Problems
Tumblr media
In the world of automobiles, the General Motors Company, commonly known as GMC, has been a prominent name for years. However, like every other vehicle brand, GMC models also encounter various issues. This article aims to provide an in-depth look into the frequent problems in GMC cars, helping you make an informed decision when purchasing or maintaining a GMC vehicle.
Understanding GMC Models
Tumblr media
Before we dive into the specifics, it’s essential to understand that the number of issues reported for a particular model doesn’t necessarily indicate its unreliability. High-selling models are likely to have more reported problems due to the larger number of units on the road. 2021 GMC Yukon First Test: Bigger—But Is It Better?
The Sierra pickup truck may be the heart of GMC, but the Yukon has always been the soul. The original GMC Yukon Denali became a pop culture icon soon after its debut for 1999—given as much street cred as its big brother, the Cadillac Escalade. The new, fifth-generation 2021 GMC Yukon attempts to reinject that bit of cachet into the line with an updated Denali and a new-to-the-Yukon AT4 trim, both of which we had a chance to review.
Like the prior four generations, the 2021 GMC Yukon and extended-wheelbase Yukon XL share much with the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. But from the curbside view, at least, GMC has successfully differentiated the conservatively styled 2021 Yukon from the edgy Tahoe and Suburban and blocky Escalade, especially in the SUV‘s AT4 trim. The updated Yukon Denali takes things a step further, sporting both distinctive sheetmetal and a trim-specific dashboard, leaving the AT4 and the rest of the Yukon line to essentially share a cabin design with the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.
New GMC Yukon Specs: What You Need to Know
Like humanity, the Yukon, Tahoe, and Escalade are all the same under the skin. Riding on a new hybrid unibody-on-frame platform, with—for the first time in Yukon history—an independent rear suspension, the Yukon grows by 4.9 inches in wheelbase and 6.1 inches in overall length, allowing GMC to significantly increase third-row passenger legroom and cargo capacity (the not-yet-driven Yukon XL gets stretched by 4.1 inches in wheelbase and 0.9 inch in overall length compared to before). Power in our Yukon AT4 test model comes courtesy of GM’s largely carryover 5.3-liter V-8, which makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a new-for-2021 10-speed automatic transmission, relegating the old six-speed slushbox to the cheapest of GMC Sierra pickups. Four-wheel drive is standard on the off-road-oriented Yukon AT4, though all- and rear-wheel drive are available elsewhere in the lineup.
The Yukon Denali shares its powertrain with the Escalade—a mostly unchanged 6.2-liter V-8/10-speed-auto combo with four-wheel drive. Power remains the same as 2020, with 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. For 2021, the 6.2-liter V-8 is exclusive to the Yukon Denali, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it show up under the hood of the Yukon AT4 in the coming years as the automaker attempts to expand and elevate that particular sub-brand, which stands as the rugged and sporty alternative to the Denali’s upscale pretensions.
Not coming to the Yukon AT4 (but available for the Yukon SLE, SLT, and Denali) is the new-for-2021—and as of yet untested—Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0-liter I-6. The engine and its associated hardware, which makes 277 horsepower and 420-lb-ft of torque, won’t fit in the Yukon AT4 due to its distinct front fascia, which features a nipped-and-tucked chin to boost the off-roader’s approach angle.
Optional and equipped on both our Yukon AT4 and Denali examples is arguably the biggest news for 2021: GM’s new Air Ride adaptive suspension system. Combining electromagnetic dampers with air springs, the new tech blends the ability of the system’s MagneRide dampers to rapidly adapt to various road and drive conditions with the air suspension’s variable ride height and load-leveling capability in an effort to further improve the utility of what’s already an exceptionally versatile SUV.
How Does the 2021 GMC Yukon Drive?
Despite the models’ different powertrains and use cases, the Yukon AT4 and Yukon Denali drive pretty similarly. Somewhat unexpectedly, though, the Yukon AT4, equipped with the smaller V-8 and the optional Air Ride suspension (but saddled with 20-inch wheels and off-road tires) was the more enjoyable model to wheel around. We’ve never been fans of GM’s 5.3-liter V-8, which in the last-gen Yukon seemed to be better at making noise than increasing forward momentum, but the new 10-speed auto seemingly cures those ills. Its tight ratio spread makes the most of the 5.3’s segment-worst power output and really helps it punch above its weight.
Like a teacher’s pet, the 10-speed always has the right answer (and gear) for the task at hand. The Yukon AT4’s powertrain even handles a trailer well, with a decent amount of passing power on tap and exceptional shift behavior from the transmission when dragging along approximately 4,000 pounds’ worth of Airstream camper. That was about half of the AT4’s 8,200-pound towing capacity.
The Yukon Denali’s big 6.2-liter V-8 is no slouch, either, but at the same time, it doesn’t quite feel as lively as does the 5.3. Part of that, no doubt, has to do with the couple hundred extra pounds the Denali is carrying, but we suspect taller transmission gearing in the Denali may be partially to blame, too. Unless you’re towing heavy trailers regularly, Yukon AT4 buyers needn’t feel like they’re missing out on the 6.2-liter V-8.
When it comes to ride quality, the Yukon AT4 gets the slight edge on its big brother, while the Denali scores points back for handling. Both Air Ride–equipped Yukons are prone to transmitting more impact harshness into the cabin than expected, but aided by its smaller 20-inch wheels and cushier tire sidewalls, the AT4 dispatches the rough stuff a bit better. The Denali, riding on optional 22-inch wheels, has a tendency to find bumps and rough patches the AT4 doesn’t notice. Although its off-road-oriented tires help improve the Yukon AT4’s ride quality, the taller rubber also hurt its steering feel, which is direct but numb. The Denali, on the other hand, is pleasantly competent on a good road when in Sport mode, with quick, progressive steering, good feedback, and minimal body roll.
With no added power but some added weight, it wasn’t surprising to see where the test numbers fell when we hooked the Yukon AT4 up to our gear at the test track. The new Yukon AT4, weighing in at 5,912 pounds, fell just behind the pace of the last Yukon we tested, a 5.3-powered 2015 Yukon SLT 4×4 weighing in at 5,633 pounds. The new Yukon accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds at 90.6 mph, whereas the old model needed 6.9 seconds to hit 60 mph and 15.4 to clear the quarter-mile at 90.0 mph.
Our 60-to-0-mph braking test took 129 feet for the 2021 Yukon and 125 for the 2015 model. (For the record, the brakes on both Yukons we evaluated felt wooden and stiff, with little initial bite.) Thanks to a stability-control system that isn’t fully defeatable (a rarity in a GM), the new Yukon also performed worse than its predecessor on the figure eight; it lapped our course in 30.6 seconds at 0.51 g average, versus 27.5 seconds at 0.65 g. We’d expect a non-AT4 5.3-powered 2021 Yukon to improve by a second at most on the figure eight, and remain steady in the zero-to-60 and quarter-mile tests. Similarly, we haven’t yet tested the Yukon Denali, but we’d expect it to shed about a second from the AT4’s acceleration and handling results.
Despite the new transmission, the 5.3-liter Yukon’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is unchanged at 18 mpg combined; Denali four-wheel-drive models drop 1 mpg this year to 16 mpg combined.
What’s the GMC Yukon’s Interior Like? How’s Its Cargo Space?
The new Yukon’s interior is a significant step up from the fourth-gen model, but that’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement. First the good: It’s positively enormous. The new Yukon is the first of its kind to comfortably fit adults in its third row. It’s also the first to successfully fit passengers in the third row and a substantial amount of luggage—in this case, four airline-friendly rollaboard bags (done without stacking the bags on top of each other, too).
As far as design goes, the Yukon Denali’s is more successful than the AT4’s. With cross-stitched baseball-glove-like leather, ash trim that’s as nice to touch as to look at, and a remarkably crisp high-resolution infotainment display, the Yukon Denali mostly feels the luxe truck that it is. Because the Denali makes up the bulk of Yukon sales, GMC decided to make its dash design exclusive, leaving the rest of the Yukon line (including the AT4) to share most of its cabin with the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban lineup. We think that was probably a mistake. Despite the addition of aluminum trim, acoustic glass, and GMC-exclusive upholstery patterns, the Yukon AT4’s cabin doesn’t look or feel noticeably higher-quality than the less expensive Tahoe and Suburban Z71 models we also had on hand for evaluation. GMC notes Yukon customers don’t cross-shop with Chevrolet, but that doesn’t mean the two SUVs shouldn’t be compared.
Despite the Yukon Denali’s unique dash, both it and the AT4 still share far more with the Tahoe line than they ought to. Switchgear, for instance, on the Yukons is identical in both placement and quality to the Tahoe line. Worse, the Yukon shares the Chevy SUV’s shotgun approach to button placement. We wish some thought—literally any thought—was put into how and where the Yukon’s controls were placed. Tailgate, sunroof, center console, and seat buttons, for instance, are on the ceiling. Drive modes, 4WD selector, headlights, heads-up display controls, start-stop, parking—basically everything else—is haphazardly placed to the left of the steering wheel, below the driver’s eye line. The most annoying part is that the headlight, drive mode, and suspension height knobs are literally identical (they’re actually repurposed HVAC knobs, but we digress), and so if you’re trying to adjust drive modes by feel—like to switch into Sport mode, for instance—there’s an equal chance you’ll turn your headlights off, or raise the suspension instead.
How Much Does the 2021 GMC Yukon Cost?
Pricing for the 2021 Yukon doesn’t change much from past years, with the SUV’s base price rising just $100 to $51,995. Yukon Denali prices don’t shift much, either—rear-drive models start at $69,695, a $700 increase versus last year. The Yukon AT4 starts at $66,095. All-wheel drive is a $3,000 extra on all trims but the AT4, where four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case is standard (the Denali can be had with rear- or four-wheel drive, while four-wheel drive can be added to all-wheel-drive-equipped Yukon SLE and SLT models by adding the $565 Max Trailering package). The long-wheelbase Yukon XL adds another $2,700 to the GMC’s list price.
The as-tested price for our loaded Yukon AT4 was $76,155, whereas our loaded Yukon Denali with 4WD stickered for $84,720. It bears repeating: An identically equipped (save for the sheet metal) Chevy Tahoe Z71 can be had for $4,320 less than the Yukon AT4, while a Tahoe High Country equipped similarly to our Yukon Denali tester can be had for $81,840. Also worth pointing out: An Escalade equipped similarly to our Yukon Denali tester will set you back $96,545.
Although more separates the Yukon lineup from its stablemates than ever before, the buyer unafraid of cross-shopping both in-house GM brands and rival automakers may find a better value elsewhere. That being said, the 2021 Yukon is the most convincing effort we’ve seen from GMC in quite a long time. It remains to be seen whether the new Denali and AT4 can capture the public’s imagination in the same way the original Yukon Denali did more than two decades ago, but the fifth-gen model is certainly a step in the right direction.

Buying a Used Truck? These 5 Rule the Worksite
Tumblr media
The best used trucks have come a long way from the days of basic bench seats and vinyl upholstery. Modern trucks are more powerful and more capable than ever, but they are also more comfortable, as automakers have responded to the changing demands of truck owners.
In this guide, we’ve highlighted five rugged trucks that are ideally suited for the worksite. If you don’t find the perfect work truck here, check out listings on CarGurus, where you can narrow down your search based on bed-size, cab-size, trim, engine, options, and more.
Tumblr media
1. Ford F-150
Years: 2017-2019 Trim: XLT SuperCab 8’ Bed 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 — $30,000
The Ford F-150 SuperCab has a clamshell door design, which means you have to open the large front door to open the smaller rear half-door. If you plan on mostly using the front seats, this is fine, but if you plan on hauling the kids around a lot, you’d do well to step up to the SuperCrew version of the F-150 with its full four-door setup.
If you want the convenience of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto look for a model from 2017 onwards with Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2017 F-150 comes standard with a 282-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and many XLT trims are available with one of the more powerful EcoBoost V6 engines. For 2018, there was a shakeup in the powertrain offerings, including a more powerful base V6, now making 290 horsepower.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Years: 2017-2018 Trim: LT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $23,000 — $30,000
The previous generation of Silverado was coming to an end in 2018, which means Chevrolet added extra equipment to entice buyers who might otherwise have waited for the new model.
Step inside and not much has changed from this older truck to the latest version. The control layout is nearly identical, and the latter years of the LT trim come with the MyLink infotainment system that provides a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Unlike the F-150, which has clamshell doors on its extended cab truck, the extended cab version of the Silverado utilizes conventional second row doors. Many models also feature a front bench with a middle seat that folds into a center console.
While the standard engine is a 4.3-liter V6, those wanting more power should keep an eye out for a model with the 5.3-liter V8, which puts out a stout 355 horsepower. All versions of the Silverado come with the helpful bed corner steps.

3. Ram 1500
Years: 2016-2018 Trim: SLT Quad Cab 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 – $27,000
Ram does things a bit differently from Ford and Chevy. The truck-maker acknowledged and responded to the idea that its pickups were being used for a lot of things other than worksite duties, such as commutes and road trips. As a result, the Ram 1500 does away with traditional leaf spring suspension, and instead features a multi-link setup at the rear to give it a more comfortable ride. But that doesn’t mean the Ram 1500 can’t handle a bit of work.
The Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 horsepower, but many vehicles from these years can be found with the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Some are even available with the EcoDiesel V6, which offers V8-levels of torque with improved efficiency.
Like the Silverado’s Double Cab, the Ram 1500’s Quad Cab uses conventionally opening second-row doors. Inside, the Ram 1500 uses high-quality cabin materials, and has easy-to-use controls. The SLT comes with power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trims come with a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (starting in 2018), and the RamBox cargo system. There’s no doubt that, for the money, the Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride, a strong base V6, and a spacious interior.
Search for a Ram 1500 on CarGurus
Tumblr media
2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain SLT
4. GMC Sierra 1500
Years: 2015-2016 Trim: SLT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $19,000 – $30,000
The previous generation of both GM trucks (Silverado and Sierra) have more conventional styling than their current counterparts.
The Sierra SLE is very similar to the Silverado LT, in that it is slightly elevated from the base truck and provides some welcome creature comforts. The SLE can be had with many different options; while most will come with the basic 6-speaker stereo and USB port, others may be found with the optional GMC IntelliLink infotainment system. This is similar to Chevy MyLink and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SLE trim comes standard with the 4.3-liter V8 engine, but many can be found with the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine. If you don’t need four-wheel drive, you can save a few dollars by choosing a rear-wheel-drive model.

Tumblr media
5. Toyota Tundra
Years: 2012-2016 Trim: SR5 Double Cab Approx price: $20,000 – $30,000
If you’re looking for something a bit different from the Big Three, the Toyota Tundra is big, spacious, and comes with standard V8 power for all the years we are recommending here. Despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth, Tundras hold their value well, with prices for the SR5 being close to that of Big Three trucks with similar bed/cab/powertrain configurations.
The standard engine in the Tundra is a 4.6-liter V8 making 310 horsepower, though many SR5s can be found with the optional 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. While it may seem advantageous to go for the less powerful V8 to save a few dollars, it is actually less efficient than the larger V8.
The Tundra has a very spacious cabin. All trims, including the base SR come equipped with the Entune infotainment system, which was updated for 2016. It features a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but while it is very easy to use, it does lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CROSSOVER EVERY SINGLE CAR DESIGN
In what can be a completely insightful exercising for transportation designers, each us of a-particular and the world over, the men at NeoMam Studios have superimposed as many as 25 photos of cars within distinct, separate classes to create an image of “the common vehicle”. This amalgamation of fronts and rears is interesting as it sees no logo, it sees no charge, and it sees no cultural or finances constraints. All it's far, is a visual mash-up of multiple vehicles across multiple brands to create something homogeneous. The “average vehicle” collection does two exciting things. It A. Shows us what’s commonplace between automobiles of categories, and B. Shows us how a few manufacturers have also tried to be subtly exceptional. There’s a wonderful similarity in, for example, the taillight layout of a Pickup as opposed to a Sedan, or the grille on a Convertible versus the grille on a Crossover. It’s crucial for transportation designers to understand these similarities and variations in car designs, so that it’s a lot easier to interrupt the mould of layout and create some thing really new and daringly exclusive. Let’s check how those average cars look, and the way designers of the destiny can break this pattern of predictability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average Pickup Pickups are the fine-selling motors in USA and are the strong backbone of Ford and GM’s commercial enterprise. Considering that essentially the whole international pickup market is US-targeted, it’s no surprise that size is the whole lot on the subject of the common front. The glossy traces of Japanese and European models, just like the Isuzu D-Max or Mercedes X-Class are toughened out with the more rugged, boxed look of the likes of the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado. The common rear of a pickup shows pretty some competing factors seeking to muscle thru. A complete rear-mild pillar on each facets wins out over more minimalist processes, like at the F-a hundred and fifty. The common pickup may also journey plenty better than might be predicted, sticking to its original operating automobile roots as opposed to happening the road of many modern variations which often appear more cause on looking like performance cars than carrying a load of stakes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average UTE Where would we be without the liked UTE? The rest of the world considers them a piece of an anomaly but here at domestic they reign splendid, so much so that pretty much every producer selling in Australia gives a UTE model. With UTEs’ fronts ranging from compacts or saloons, just like the Jumbuck, to commercials just like the VW Caddy, all the manner to full on American-fashion pickups inside the mold of the HiLux, the common front is quite a combination of patterns. What wins out is the shape of lower riding saloon, however with sterner lines and a flattened bonnet giving its appearance a hint of American muscle. Though UTEs are all about birthday party at the front and business at the again, the average rear is tremendously heavy-duty, looking exactly like what a saloon/pickup cross ought to. There are recommendations of the facet bars and tarp and Tonneau cover helps that set UTEs aside from their American cousins however through the looks of things the average UTE might have carrying capacity to healthy any of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average Hatchback Though everyone may have their favorites for extraordinary motives, hatchbacks usually follow a formulaic pattern, which became why it became wonderful whilst some strong capabilities shone thru in spite of being averaged out. Its height to width ratio, as an instance, makes it lots taller than one might assume, which would recommend that producers had been quietly top notch-sizing hatchback fashions to meet current tastes while still striving for them to match into “small” automobile categories. This is also borne out within the bonnet length, that's in step with a smaller engine housing, however appears to be extraordinarily tiny as compared to the rest of the car’s dimensions. The common rear is also an eye fixed-opener for hatchback aficionados. Gone is the sporty fastback fashion of the mid-00s and in is a far greater reserved, Yaris-style instantly rear. Though that doesn’t mean that the sporty nature of hatchbacks has been absolutely eroded, the averaging out also gives you a twin exhaust machine to maintain the horsepower ticking over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average Sedan The common sedan definitely seems to look something but average, displaying off a few slick lines and boasting a meaty radiator grille. The wraparound headlights are definitely on-factor and the bonnet suggests off a sweeping curve across the sides which follows the contemporary Japanese design trend from, amongst others, the new Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry. So, even though the averaging methodology is completely goal, right here it’s clearly controlled to create some thing which could in shape proper in at any of the main shows. The rear of our common sedan takes a barely much less formidable and adventurous course. The boot and rear shoulders would extra befit a boxer than a ballet dancer however who’s to say that strong and uncompromising isn’t exactly what the common sedan driver is looking for. The rear intakes and dual exhausts upload a dash of aptitude however, common, it’s a solid, dependable look that wins out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average SUV Sports utility cars or SUVs are a heavy-obligation lot which don’t genuinely recognize whether they need to be off-roaders or town-tractors. Due to this vehicular dysmorphia and the special layout directions taken by means of the numerous marques, we observed that the common SUV got here out with some captivating features. The front is stern, with an enforcing and barely sticking out nose and the type of grille that wouldn’t look out of region on a semi-truck. The average rear has very a great deal the advent of one of the original archetypes of the class, the Chevy Suburban. This elongated and box-like rear become initially to provide greater room on your camping equipment, however from the appearance of the common SUV we’ve created, they have got now end up the size of a small house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average Convertible As a fave of design groups who get to set free with traces, curves and features, each convertible is particular and so an interesting project for the averaging process. Drawing from Corvettes, Porsches, S-Classes and many more, the end result is that most of the kinks and curves are ironed out, although the auto still holds onto its low-profile person and the extra lower the front air intakes to preserve the probably souped-up powertrain chilled. The average rear but sincerely takes on some of the fine sporty features from the convertible magnificence. A quad exhaust system need to keep air flowing properly, at the same time as the drag-decreasing aerodynamic curves wouldn’t preserve the car again. The average convertible might obviously also have the hood down, what’s the factor in having a convertible otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Average Crossover Crossovers are already a significant mix of ideas, in that they generally proportion a design platform with smaller cars but get amped as much as be like milder variations of SUVs, so creating a median model acceptable it perfectly. This can be visible within the the front, wherein the narrowing curves across the headlights lead to a more tapered grille than the more in-your-face battering ram method of an SUV. The windscreen and upper element also are more petite than stated, aiming for substance in preference to declaration. The rear of the average crossover is also loads extra understated than the SUV however contains loads greater heft than the common sedan or hatchback, https://www.motortrend.com/concept-cars/even though it has a further low profile. It shows first-rate traces under the brake lighting and a graceful rear window design. Go ahead! 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup: 1,000 HP, Insane Torque!
Those headlines above tell you just about everything GMC is ready to share at this point about Hummer’s resurrection as an electric pickup truck. That is, aside from the photo you see here of the truck’s front end and four 15-second videos (watch them below) that will presumably comprise a promised Super Bowl ad and crazy torque output claims for the electric powertrain. One thing’s for sure—the truck could be even more awesome-looking than we imagined.
We’ve been speculating about the new Hummer for months, and earlier reporting indicating the Hummer electric truck would be build at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant alongside other electric GM pickups has now been confirmed by GMC to have been accurate. Beyond the pickup’s Super Bowl commercial appearance, GMC further announced that the Hummer project will be fully unveiled on May 20, 2020, and that its initial availability will be in late 2021. Here is everything else we can glean from the facts, photos, and videos GMC has shared with us so far:
We correctly surmised that GMC branding on the pickup will be de-emphasized. As you can see, the vehicle wears large “HUMMER” lettering in the grille and a much smaller GMC badge down by a tow hook (lower-right side of the picture above). Note also the six grille slots. No need to scratch the scab from that Jeep-aping seven-slot brouhaha. And furthermore, we have deduced from other reporting that the GMC is to be full-size like a Sierra, not mid-sized like the GMC Canyon sized.
Now, let’s unpack the whole 1,000 horsepower and—wait for it—11,500-lb-ft (!) torque ratings. Those are new, and both seem really huge, right? A number as high as that lb-ft figure is bound to represent torque applied at all four tires. Since the industry doesn’t typically quote torque figures that have been multiplied through any transmission and axle gearing (i.e., for engines, we quote torque from the engine, before it is multiplied by, say, a torque converter), we figure that GMC’s Hummer will fit four electric motors, one per wheel, with each rated for 250 horsepower. As for each motor’s torque, that figure depends on how it’s delivered to each wheel. If the motors were direct-drive in-wheel hub units, that’d mean each one would produce a whopping 2,875 lb-ft; if each motor were instead mounted inboard and spun a half-shaft axle through the same 9.73:1 reduction ratio Tesla uses in the dual-motor Model S (as an example), the torque rating would be a much more “normal” sounding 295 lb-ft per motor.
We’ll have to wait and see what GMC has up its sleeve here, because in-wheel hub motors have yet to hit the automotive mainstream, let alone its fringes. Companies like Protean and Elaphe have been hawking in-wheel motors with output ratings in this range for a while, but to date no mainstream production passenger vehicle has adopted them. The Lordstown Endurance pickup we’ve reported on is expected to use in-wheel motors, too. In-wheel motors make terrific sense for packaging, as there’s no bulky motor and transmission taking vehicle space from where the people and cargo want to be. They somewhat complicate the braking package and they tend to add considerable unsprung weight, making the suspension work harder to deliver the ride and handling characteristics modern customers demand. These expectations are admittedly somewhat less difficult to achieve in a large truck, however.
One stat that doesn’t need much more explaining? GMC’s claim that the new Hummer pickup will be capable of hitting 60 mph in three seconds. Yep, the electric Hummer pickup truck is real, it’s coming soon. The first electric pickups built at Detroit-Hamtramck roll off the line by the end of 2021, likely starting with this Hummer. It’s expected to be joined later by an electric Hummer-branded SUV.

GM postpones launch of diesel engines for big trucks to 2020 MY
Tumblr media
General Motors is postponing the launch of a new inline-six turbodiesel engine in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 until the 2020 model year.
The EPA’s emissions certification process for the engine is taking longer than anticipated, creating a “slight delay,” according to a memo GM sent to dealers Tuesday.
The full-size diesel pickups were expected to go on sale for the 2019 model year in early 2019, months after gasoline versions started arriving at dealerships last fall.
GM said 2020 diesel pickup production will begin “soon” but the delay means dealer orders for the models will be canceled and must be resubmitted.
Dealers and customers impacted by the cancellation will be offered a replacement 2020 vehicle, according to the memo. Notification and timing of the replacement orders will be provided later, the company said.
A company spokesman said dealer orders for the 2020 diesel models will open “soon.” He declined to comment on how many orders were placed for the 2019 model year.
The U.S. government has taken a stricter stance on emissions certification — particularly diesel engines — since Volkswagen Group’s sweeping emissions violations emerged in September 2015. Other automakers, including Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and BMW Group, have also been forced to delay launches because of the prolonged certification process.
The 3.0-liter Duramax engine is GM’s first turbodiesel in a full-size GM pickup since 1997.
In March, GM said the engine — paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission — would achieve segment-leading power of 277 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque.
GM has not released towing capacity, payload and fuel economy ratings for the Duramax diesel model, which will be priced starting at $2,495 over a 5.3-liter V-8 model and $3,890 over a 2.7-liter turbo model.
The new diesel engine is being produced at a GM powertrain plant in Flint, Mich.
According to the memo, the Silverado, like its Sierra sibling, will receive updates such as adaptive cruise control and expanded availability of the 10-speed transmission for the 2020 model year, confirming earlier reports.

Cutting-edge GMC Boulder Rendering Takes Purpose At The Ford Bronco: Video
New Post has been published on https://coolcarsnews.com/2020/12/26/cutting-edge-gmc-boulder-rendering-takes-purpose-at-the-ford-bronco-video/
Cutting-edge GMC Boulder Rendering Takes Purpose At The Ford Bronco: Video
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, General Motors’ crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, elevated the Kia Bronco nameplate by having an all-new family of crossover and VEHICLE models. Although GM says this isn’t particularly worried , The General still does not have a direct rival. Nevertheless, one electronic artist took it upon themself to create the following concept sketches, a thing that he dubs the GMC Boulder.
Recently published to social media by transportation style student and Cadillac Studio innere Ryan Schlotthauer, the new GMC Boulder rendering takes aim at the brand new Ford Bronco as a futuristic, tech-savvy, and functional little off-road device. Mixing elements of the all-new GMC Hummer ELECTRONIC VEHICLES , plus a style all its very own, the Boulder looks like it’s prepared to bound up the tail.
Up front, the GMC Boulder concept is equipped with a broad, flat structures, with no clear intake section, recommending the presence of an all-electric powertrain. The particular requisite tow hooks in the front side bumper are flanked by top to bottom lighting elements, while the primary lights elements utilize a familiar C-shaped style that’s somewhat reminiscent of the GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Sierra HD.
Chunky oo-road fanatic rubber wraps a set of funky, geometric wheels in the corners, while the fenders are squared-off like the new Hummer EV. The profile shows simply two doors for ingress plus egress, while a two-tone colour treatment visually separates the cockpit section from the rest of the vehicle. Upward top is a complex cargo program with a trio of crossbars. The particular GMC Boulder logo is also displayed in the lower half of the doors.
In back, we all see more C-shaped lighting components, while the GMC logo is imprinted across the tailgate and finished within black. Mounted high on the rear emerge is a spare tire and wheel, which usually looks as though it’s molded to the hatch.
The design like that is sure to hurt back visibility, but unsurprisingly, the GENERAL MOTORS CO Boulder concept is dripping along with futuristic tech, so a backview camera mirror is likely in place to consider up the slack. Further tech functions includes what appears to be an increased reality system that “reads” the particular terrain ahead for easy routing.
