Vous entendrez alors toutes sortes de remarques comme : «Eh, que c’est gros cela!» ou encore «Et glou et glou et glou…» ou même : «Je ne suis pas un gars de truck mais…j’avoue!».
Le véhicule dont il est question dans ce blogue cette semaine est le tout nouveau Ford F-250 Super Duty Platinum Tremor. Au départ, je devrais vous parler des retouches esthétiques apportées à la gamme Super Duty pour 2020 mais avant tout, je dois vous préciser que Ford a créé la version Tremor surtout pour concurrencer le Ram 2500 Power Wagon qui existe déjà depuis quelques années au sein de la famille des grands pick-up de FCA et qui connaît une certaine forme de popularité. Pourquoi Ford n’a-t-il pas réagit plus tôt à ce produit concurrent, on ne sait pas. Mais depuis quelques temps, on sent que le constructeur de Dearborn veut s’imposer dans le domaine des tout-terrains pour devenir une sorte de Land Rover américain mais à la différence près qu’il y inclura plusieurs types de camionnettes dont ses gros pick-up.  Je crois que je m’en suis rendu plus compte lorsque Ford m’a prêté, un peu avant le «confinement», la version FX4 d’un grand VUS Expedition afin de concurrencer les Tahoe Z71 et compagnie.

La ligne extérieure de ce Ford Super Duty est avec nous depuis 2017. Seules quelques retouches lui ont été apportées depuis. On reconnaîtra les versions 2020 à leur calandre, à leurs phares légèrement redessinés et aux feux arrière révisés. Mais le tout est plutôt subtil…La carrosserie toujours toute en aluminium nous revient dans ses différentes versions avec cabine régulière, allongée ou à quatre portes et à ses caisses courtes ou longues. Si Ford annonce une suspension un peu plus basse pour ses Super Duty réguliers (question de rendre l’accès à l’habitacle plus facile), ce n’en sera pas le cas de la version Tremor faite pour de véritables excursions hors-route. Ce genre d’exercice est nettement plus populaire dans l’ouest de notre continent où les aventures dans le désert sont plus populaires qu’au Québec. Mais il y a quand même beaucoup d’utilisateurs québécois qui y trouveront l’utilité de la grande garde au sol et la robustesse du véhicule en chantier ou dans les champs boueux.

L’intérieur des Super Duty est presque identique à celui des F-150 sauf que, malgré la différence des diverses finitions, il y a aussi plusieurs commandes d’accessoires uniques aux Super Duty. Vu que les F-250 sont parmi les tracteurs préférés de grosses maisons-caravanes, il n’est pas surprenant de voir que les places arrière sont très confortables avec beaucoup d’espace pour les jambes des passagers additionnels. Notons que les coussins se relèvent pour offrir un coffre et un grand plancher pour transporter de longs objets qui doivent être protégés des éléments de la nature. Ah oui! Le ventilateur de la lunette arrière est aussi à commande électrique comme peut l’être le déclenchement de la commande d’ouverture du panneau arrière de la caisse. Dans le cas de mon véhicule d’essai, il s’agissait d’une benne de six pieds et demi avec recouvrement de protection, accessoires d’arrimage et l’escalier escamotable dans le panneau arrière qui est absolument indispensable dans le cas du Tremor avec suspension surélevée.

Lorsque j’ai réservé ce F-250, je croyais bien que Ford nous aurait proposé son nouveau moteur V8 à essence (optionnel) de 7,3 litres de 430 chevaux et 475 li-pi de couple (les Edsel de 1958 avaient un V8 à essence Mercury de 6,7 litres ou 410 pouces cubes qui affichait aussi 475 li-pi de couple!). Cependant, j’ai eu droit au V8 turbodiesel optionnel de 6,7 litres (le V8 à essence de 6,2 litres est offert en moteur de base) qui développe désormais 474 chevaux mais 1050 li-pi de couple (à 1660 tr-min), une puissance qui commence à friser le ridicule. C’est surtout dû à une course à la puissance devant concurrencer les six cylindres en ligne turbodiesel Cummins de Ram ou les V8 Duramax de GM ! Toutefois, ce qui est intéressant, c’est que ce moteur est combiné à une nouvelle boîte automatique à 10 rapports qui devrait rendre le moteur plus économique (notons ici que son concurrent direct, le Ram Power Wagon, n’est livrable qu’avec un V8 à essence de 6,4 litres). Évidemment, la motricité aux quatre roues sur commande par bouton rotatif est incluse avec le Tremor mais, on n’y retrouve pas le mode 4RM automatique comme sur les Silverado et Sierra 2500 équivalents ce qui serait pratique en hiver. En ce qui a trait aux capacités de traction des remorques, il faut consulter les cahiers de spécification qui établiront  celle de chaque véhicule spécifique (châssis, type de carrosserie, moteur, transmission, choix des rapports d’engrenage) mais elles peuvent varier de 12 600 à 22 800 livres selon que l’attelage soit une boule arrière ou un col de cygne avec prise au centre de la caisse.

Avec toute cette puissance, «mon» F-250 Tremor était capable d’accélérations d’environ huit secondes pour atteindre le cap des 100 km/h (vide, bien entendu!). Toutefois, ce sont les reprises qui impressionnent, surtout pour passer de la rampe d’accès à l’autoroute même grâce à la souplesse de la boîte auto à dix rapports. Le freinage est aussi plus impressionnant (comparativement à une plus vieille version essayée en même temps) ce qui est rassurant pour un véhicule de plus de 6500 livres. Quant à la direction (à pompe hydraulique), elle est relativement précise avec une bonne tenue de cap sur autoroute. Le Tremor d’essai était équipé de pneus Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac de 35 pouces 285-75 R 18 tout-à -fait indiqués pour les déplacements en terrain difficile, qu’il soit boueux ou rocailleux. Ils ne se sont pas révélés aussi bruyants qu’anticipé, surtout sur l’autoroute.

J’ai utilisé cette camionnette pour plusieurs fonctions. Outre mes déplacements locaux (pas toujours facile à stationner mais l’option de la caméra dans la calandre et la vision périphérique du véhicule en survol peuvent venir en aide), je me suis aussi dirigé vers le parc d’Orford pour y rejoindre mes enfants ce qui m’a permis d’apprécier, jusqu’à un certain point, la suspension un peu moins rigide de la première «étape» de celle-ci, l’autoroute 10 étant une bonne piste d’essai vu son revêtement très imparfait! Il reste que c’est une camionnette quand même rigide. Mais la visibilité y est idéale (ainsi que la position de conduite!).
J’ai aussi utilisé le F-250 pour ce qu’il est le plus capable, soit de remorquer. J’y ai donc monté une remorque pour automobile pour déplacer sur quelques kilomètres un imposant John Deere Gator. J’aurais bien aimé profiter du système de marche arrière avec contrôle de la remorque par commande rotative (grâce à la vue à l’écran) mais cette remorque n’avait pas l’autocollant en forme de damier nécessaire à la lecture par la caméra arrière ! Qu’importe, cette même caméra est venue en aide pour aligner la camionnette afin de faciliter la manœuvre d’attache. Puis, vous vous en doutez, malgré les quelques milliers de livres (ou kilos) en attache, le moteur du F-250 n’a presque pas changé de son signalant le peu d’effort nécessaire pour tirer une charge raisonnable.
Rendu à destination, j’en ai profité pour détacher la remorque et faire quelques tours de roue sur un terrain de ferme qui, en vérité, n’a même pas nécessité la motricité aux quatre roues. Toutefois, c’était déjà agréable de pouvoir disposer des habilités du F-250 surtout judicieusement combiné aux agressifs pneus Goodyear. Enfin, une petite commande de pierre décorative déposée dans la caisse (quelques centaines de livres ou kilos) n’a rien changé au comportement du F-250. Ce n’est pas que le Bronco dont il sera question mais le départ de la «Famille Bronco» à laquelle il faut déjà ajouter la plus petite Bronco Sport basée, dans son cas, sur l’architecture de l’Escape. SEMA 2019 is just a few weeks away, and Ford has already teased the Ranger and SUV projects it’s bringing to the show. Now, the Blue Oval has announced it’s bringing five custom F-Series Super Duty rigs to the annual tuner symposium. The Super Duties will join around 50 other vehicles in total, including SUVs and a host of Mustangs, at Ford’s massive stand at the event. Check out the heavy-duty F-Series truck builds that will be on display in just a few weeks’ time.
LGE-CTS Motorsports Baja Forged Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab XLT
Ford calls this Super Duty the “Swiss army knife for the modern adventurer—functioning as a mobile command center, campsite and workshop.” A utility bench area combined with an LGE-CTS Motorsports rear canopy replaces the standard pickup bed. The utilitarian Ford rides on a 4.5-inch Stage 7 Icon suspension lift kit and 18-inch Method Race wheels in bronze to contrast the olive drab paint job.
