2020 Ford GT Gets Even Better with More Power and a Bare Carbon Edition
No one rests on their laurels. The buzz created by Ford when it showed the GT supercar at the 2015 North American International Auto Show has worn off—heck, having a Detroit auto show in January is already history.
Even if you’re a supercar that instantly sold out in 2017 with enough orders to fill two years of production, you have to stay fresh and relevant. Ford Performance answers that call with 13 additional horsepower for 2020, improved cooling, a chance to order the carbon-fiber body unpainted or with an updated Gulf Racing appearance package to pay homage to the 1968 Le Mans–winning GT40.
The 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin-turbo V-6 engine now generates a cool 660 horsepower, and engineers also tweaked the calibration to give it a broader torque band. The car has gallery-cooled pistons and higher-energy ignition coils, as well, all adapted from the GT MkII limited-edition, track-only version. Cooling is always a challenge, so new buttress air ducts are designed to increase airflow by 50 percent and the car has larger intercoolers to keep things somewhat chillier. For more fun, the suspension has been fiddled with for better handling and body control while on the track. And you will hear the 2020 Ford GT coming with standard titanium exhaust from Akrapovič that elicits a deeper, more resonant note. Bonus: It’s nine pounds lighter.
Ford has played with exposed carbon fiber before with the GT. The Carbon Fiber Series introduced in late 2018 substituted gloss for paint on the stripes, A-pillars and lower body panels, while the cabin received a matte carbon-fiber, center console, sills and other pieces of trim. But the new Liquid Carbon edition goes further with everything exposed, wearing nothing but clearcoat over the sexy weave. It comes with standard carbon-fiber wheels, as well. It can be further customized with titanium lugnuts, six-point racing harness anchors, and a choice of five interior options and five caliper colors. Want a stripe? You can order the dual center stripes offered on the standard Ford GT or the single stripe found on the Carbon Series. Finish the look with painted mirror caps. It’s all a la carte. But expect to pay about $750,000 if you are one of the ones in line for the new look GT that will start deliveries in the spring.
The other new look for 2020 is an update to the Gulf Oil paint scheme with a black pinstripe between the famous blue and orange. Oh, and the number changes from 9 on the 2019 model to 6 (from the Le Mans winner).
GT production began in December 2016. Originally, Ford planned to limit the run to 500 cars, but to meet greater than expected demand, the decision was made to increase production to 1,350 through 2022. The cars are assembled by Multimatic, the Canadian carbon-fiber and racing specialist, in Markham, Ontario. Only 141 cars were made in the first year; production then grew to 250 a year. Of the four or five vehicles a week Multimatic churns out, one can be a special model.
Ford says it will continue to make the updated 2020 Ford GT into 2022. Base models run about $500,000.

2020 Chevy Corvette C8.R, 2021 Land Rover Defender, SSC Tuatara: This Week's Top Photos
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=6383&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R race car spy shots Chevrolet’s redesigned Corvette is shaping up to be one mean beast. This week we saw the racing version of the mid-engine car, the C8.R, testing under the cover of darkness at Florida’s Sebring International Raceway. While the road car is expected on sale next year, the race car isn’t expected to be ready until 2020. 2021 Land Rover Defender spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien Another vehicle spied this week was Land Rover’s redesigned Defender, in both five- and three-door body styles. The redesign is the first for the iconic nameplate since the original was launched more than three decades ago, and judging by the spy shots Land Rover has a very handsome design for its latest go-anywhere SUV. The only 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake ever produced Muscle car fans will soon have a chance to own a significant piece of Ford Mustang history. The original 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Snake, the only one ever built, is coming up for auction. This is the Goodyear demonstrator that was powered by a 427-cubic inch race engine lifted from a Le Mans-winning Ford GT40, and for the right price it can be yours. 2018 Ford Mustang GT (Matt Dayka/For Motor Authority) We’re quite sure there will be plenty of bidders for that piece of Mustang history, given the significance of the nameplate to America. We recently learned just what that significance entailed, as over two months the Motor Authority editorial team took a modern Mustang GT for an immersive road trip across the United States. In the process, we scratched the surface of what the pony car means to the country. 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison We also took a spin in the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison this week and found the added off-road goods made the mid-size pickup truck noticeably more formidable than the standard ZR2. But if it’s a full-size truck that you need, you’ll be interested in the redesigned 2020 Silverado Heavy Duty that Chevy revealed this week. 2020 Acura TLX Type S spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien Sport sedan fans can look forward to the 2020 Acura TLX Type S, which stepped out in front of the camera for the first time this week. We’ll likely see the car make its market launch in the second half of 2019. It’s confirmed to be coming with a turbocharged V-6, most likely related to the unit in the NSX supercar. SSC Tuatara pre-production prototype Another vehicle due on the market in 2019 is SSC’s long-awaited Tuatara hypercar, a pre-production version of which was spotted testing on public roads. SSC is confident of reaching a top speed of 300 mph. To get there, the Tuatara will rely on a bespoke 5.9-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged to the tune of 1,350 horsepower on regular gas and as much as 1,750 hp with E85. Koenigsegg Regera in bare carbon fiber – Image via Keno Zache Photography/Carage SSC rival Koenigsegg this week showed off a Regera finished in what the Swedish company calls Koenigsegg Naked Carbon, or KNC for short. As the name suggests, this is a pure carbon finish that’s devoid of any clear coat. In fact, even the thin epoxy that normally coats autoclaved cured carbon fiber has been carefully removed by sanding and polishing, resulting in a surface that’s not only tough but also has a unique carbon-metallic look. Cobras, Corvettes, and GT’s: Inside the Superformance Gallery
Superformance LLC offers customers the chance to relive history with licensed, period-correct legendary cars from Ford, Shelby, and Chevrolet. The Shelby Cobra, Shelby Daytona, Ford GT40, and the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport defined an era, but the original cars demand multi-million-dollar price tags. Superformance will build you an authentic licensed replica at a fraction of the price.
Known for high quality and craftsmanship, Superformance constructs its cars in its factory in South Africa. Expatriate CEO Lance Stander founded the company in 1994, importing the rolling chassis into the United States and selling them through his Hillbank Motor Corp retail division. He has since stewarded the company from a premier Cobra replica manufacturer to building officially-licensed Corvette Grand Sport and GT40 replicas. In the past year, he launched Shelby Legendary Cars, the exclusive builder and distributor of all fiberglass Shelby Cobras and Shelby Daytona Coupe Continuation cars.
Superformance has opened a new, larger facility in Irvine, California.
Beside Lance is Rich MacDonald, son of legendary driver Dave MacDonald, who raced Cobras and Corvettes in their heyday. He was known, among many things, for drifting cars through Riverside International Raceway’s turn six. Rich now works at Superformance, selling the same cars that his father raced more than five decades earlier.
This is a Superformance MKIII-CS equipped with a Ford Performance Coyote V8.
While Superformance continues to expand its product line, the company’s bread and butter remains the wildly popular Shelby-licensed Cobra, the only replica Cobras in the world to be endorsed by Shelby America. “Our Cobras are factory-built, not kit cars,” explains MacDonald, “We ship them over as a complete rolling chassis sans drivetrain, and have the car finished to the customer’s specifications. They find us online or visit the showroom, and pick out the color combination they like, and make an engine selection”.
“They want a Ford Racing engine, or a Shelby aluminum engine, a Roush, a Blueprint? No problem. Some customers are choosing a modern Ford 5.0 Coyote for their new Cobra, which can be left naturally aspirated or equipped with a Whipple Supercharger. Anything is possible.” says MacDonald.
The 450hp Ford Performance Coyote V8 is attached to a Tremec TKO-600 five-speed transmission.
“Once the engine is selected, we send it to one of our preferred installers like the pros at V’s Performance, and they’ll complete the drivetrain installation in about 8-10 weeks. After that, the car is ready for pickup or transport,” continued MacDonald.
A fully built-out Superformance Cobra, depending on options, engine selection and wheel selection, will run you between $80,000-$100,000 brand-new out the door.
Superformance will allow you to relive history with as few, or as many, creature comforts and modifications as you desire. “Most want very few,” says MacDonald, “Especially the Cobra purists. We have customers who come to us with vivid memories of a Cobra back in the ‘60s- one they rode in or perhaps drove a time or two- and they want that same raw, old-school driving experience in their new Cobra. In those cases, I’ll steer them to a Shelby Continuation Cobra. The CSX6000 & CSX8000 series Cobras are built to near exacting standards as the originals, with a round tube frame, period-correct suspension, and no brake assist or power steering. We also sell the CSX9000 series Shelby Continuation Daytona Coupes. All Shelbys come with CSX-chassis numbers.”
The Shelby Engine Company’s big block 468 Stroker makes more than 560hp. This one is powering a Shelby CSX6000.
“If the customer chooses an engine from the Shelby Engine Company, we can have their chassis number stamped on the block to give matching numbers,” continues MacDonald. The exclusivity of a CSX-serial numbered Shelby Cobra comes at a price, costing roughly $40,000 more than a Superformance Cobra.
Rich MacDonald in his Superformance Cobra 289 Slab Side, the same cobra that his father Dave MacDonald raced.
MacDonald describes how he explains the Shelby Continuation Cobras and Daytonas to customers, “When I say it’s a new Shelby, some don’t understand how that’s possible. They think Shelbys were all built in the sixties. I tell them, ‘It’s the same as buying a new Ferrari. Those cars are being built today but they’re still real Ferraris. It’s the same with a new Shelby, you are buying a real Shelby and it can be entered into the official Shelby registry.’”
Superformance’s devotion to period-correctness continues to expand. “We’ve recently announced an agreement with the Original Venice Crew guys in Gardena. This new partnership allows a customer who buys a Shelby Continuation Cobra or Daytona Coupe the option of having the drivetrain installed by OVC. How cool is that? So yeah, we’re shipping them up to Jim Marietta and Ted Sutton and letting them lather legitimate Shelby American DNA all over those Shelbys,” says MacDonald.
The iconic Ford GT40 is also remade as the Superformance GT40. “Our GT40 carries the original GT40 trademark and license, is built from the original blueprints and jigs, and comes with a period-correct GT40 ‘P’ chassis number. They are legally considered an original GT40 and logged in the GT40 World Registry. We build them in Mark I and Mark II configurations and 85% of the parts on our GT40 are interchangeable with the original,” explains MacDonald.
The GT40s that raced in the ‘60s had P1000 series numbers, and last month. Superformance unveiled a Limited Edition 50th Anniversary GT40 that celebrates GT40P1075’s victory at the 1969 24hrs of Le Mans. “These badass machines come dressed in P1075 Gulf Racing livery and are stamped with P1000 continuation numbers. You can’t get any more legit than that,” says MacDonald. They even come with a matching Gulf trimmed guitar. “We debuted this limited edition at 2019 Barrett Jackson Scottsdale. Only 50 cars will be produced.”
“If the customer has racing on their mind, we offer a P1075 ‘Tool Room’ version that is eligible for sanctioned historic racing. The Tool Room comes with a period-correct 302ci powerplant, installed by legendary Dennis Olthoff [of Olthoff Racing], who knows a thing or two about vintage racing. We’ve sold a few already, and they’re under construction at our factory in South Africa,” adds MacDonald.
The Future 40 is a Superformance GT40-based car that is a modern take on the GT40. It bridges the gap between the 1966 cars and the 2016 Ford GT Le Mans winning supercar. Based on a MK1 chassis, it has modern parts like HRE rims, Baer brakes, large aerodynamic wing, and is powered by either a supercharged Coyote 5.0 or a twin-turbo Ecoboost V6, like the factory car. The livery of the car honors Chip Ganassi Racing winning Ford GT Le Mans GTE Pro class win.
Not one to leave anyone behind, Superformance builds a car aimed at the hearts of Corvette lovers: the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. The original Grand Sport was the result of a secret program to build a lightweight Corvette that could compete against the Shelby Cobras. It led to the building of five cars raced by greats like Roger Penske, Jim Hall, Dick Thompson, John Cannon, and Augie Pabst, storming their way to a dominating victory over the Cobras at the 1963 Nassau Speed Week. Their success brought instant acclaim but unwanted attention from General Motors brass, who quickly shut down the racing program as it was in violation of the AMA ban on racing. The five original Grand Sports have all survived and are worth many millions of dollars today.
Fans of these iconic Corvettes can now buy their own official GM-licensed Corvette from Superformance. “We build the Corvette Grand Sport,” boasts MacDonald. “They are expertly crafted and built from the original jigs. They are absolutely stunning cars and cost just a fraction of the price of the originals.” The Superformance Corvette Grand Sport, complete with a GM-based small block or any LS engine starts at $150,000. For a bit more, you can have your engine installed by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, complete with a 5-year/50,000-mile warranty. The Grand Sport engine bay is also large enough to accommodate a period-correct 377-inch small block.
1963 Corvette Grand Sport with a LT-1 6.2L Corvette V8.
MacDonald’s Corvette enthusiasm is no accident. His father raced Corvettes prior to being hired away by Carroll Shelby. In 1962, he was handpicked by Zora Arkus-Duntov to do the shakedown testing for the new 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. Dave MacDonald is enshrined in the Corvette Hall of Fame.
This is Ford’s 2004 GR-1 concept car, sitting in the Superformance gallery. Superformance announced that they will start building GR-1s starting in 2020.
Superformance recently let slip that they will start producing the Ford Shelby GR-1, a concept that Ford debuted in 2005, which is the spiritual successor of the Shelby Daytona Coupe. The concept car, which is the only one ever completed, is sitting in Superformance’s Irvine, California showroom – as is the buck which is on loan from Ford. “Customers can even have their GR-1 finished as a hybrid,” adds MacDonald. The GR-1 is set to debut in late 2020.
Superformance has the clay buck of Ford’s GR-1 concept car. On loan from Ford, Superformance has been scanning it to make molds for their upcoming car.
There is only one way to describe these historic cars, and that is to get behind the wheel and drive one. On the second visit to Superformance’s new Irvine location, MacDonald had a gleaming 1965 427-powered Shelby CSX6000 series Continuation Cobra sitting outside. Painted in Guardsmen Blue with Wimbledon White stripes and sitting on period-correct Goodyear Billboard tires, this big block 468 stoker put out a whopping 560 horsepower. Tipping the scale at 2,590 pounds, it is 1,000 pounds lighter than a modern performance car like the 2018 GT350R, and has at least 30 more horsepower.
The passenger seat is somewhat cramped as two six-volt batteries reside behind it. The batteries were located there in Carroll Shelby’s race cars and is yet another authentic period-correct feature found on the Shelby Continuation Cobra. You are secured in the seat with a racing-style belt, and the open-air view in this convertible is immense- the only thing in front of you is a windshield that is barely taller than the top of your head.
MacDonald pulled the car out, and once we got onto the street, he opened it up, quickly shifting through the gears and giving everyone on the road at that time a scene that they will not soon forget. The sounds that the engine makes are epic- burbling and popping. It is everything I imagined a 427 Cobra would sound like.
Although there were a few things that a person born in the 1980s would not have anticipated. The Billboard tires tended to wander at speed, so the car is never really stable in a straight line, it dances right to lef,t and you have to account for this errant movement with quick steering corrections. In a normal car, that would be a small concern, but sitting behind a 560hp big block it’s a concern. MacDonald pointed out that the Billboard tires are just an option. He talked a bit on how to treat the car before parking and letting your author sit in the driver seat.
I got behind the wheel, and the first thing that surprised me was the shifter. It’s a short throw shifter like most modern cars, however the shifter is at almost a 45-degree angle. The angle is due to the shifter’s placement in the transmission tunnel, the handle reaches out to put the shift knob in a comfortable place for the driver; however, it was something that immediately seemed foreign to me. I practiced the gear change at every opportunity during my 10 to 15-minute drive.
The steering wheel’s hoop is only about an inch and a quarter thick. I cannot recall whether or not this particular car had indicators, I do not know. But what I do know is that it had no side mirrors. However, with the entire sky as your ceiling, it was not hard to turn your head to see what was on your side.
The most unexpected sensation came from the brakes. I’m used to modern-day, power-assisted brakes, and these brakes about the exact opposite. While this Shelby has Wilwoods, it took some getting used to the pedal travel and the lack of power assist. I spoke to former Shelby American race car driver, John Morton, and he said “that’s just the way the brakes were back then, we didn’t know any different, so to us that was normal.”
I drove the car with a healthy respect of the power and the 1960s racing technology. Not trying to prove anything, I just cruised, shifting through the gears and enjoying the scenic views of Irvine.
It’s a true testament to what the iconic drivers of the 1960s faced when they entered race cars like this: brutish overwhelming power, brakes that took a long time to stop, no power steering, and little to no driver safety. It’s no wonder that names like Gurney, Parnelli, Titus, Bondurant, and MacDonald still hold so much reverence. These drivers were superheroes who drove these cars at their limits while also putting their lives on the line. Driving this car was a moment that I will never forget, and I see why people plop down hundreds of thousands of dollars for a chance to own one. It is an experience that is unlike any other.
