A year before Ken Miles set lap records at Le Mans in Ford’s famed GT40, the noted race car driver and engineer made waves on the track in the first 1965 Mustang Shelby GT350 fastback coupe. Ford is celebrating this 55 years later with a limited-edition 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350 Heritage Edition Package.
Miles made Shelby GT350 an instant legend when he drove it to victory at Green Valley Raceway in Texas on Feb. 14, 1965. Since then, the Shelby GT350 has been a Mustang icon.
For 2020, Ford is producing a limited run of Heritage Edition fastbacks finished in classic Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue side and race stripes in a nod to the 1965 GT350 competition model developed by Carroll Shelby. The United States has sported blue and white as its assigned international racing colors since the 1950s. Additional Heritage Edition cues include front and rear exterior badges finished in Guardsman Blue and a unique dash badge inside. GT350R models will feature all-black seats with red accent stitching.
The throwback Heritage Edition Package comes a year after Shelby GT350 received a host of upgrades. These include revised front chassis geometry for improved steering feel, plus revised antilock braking and MagneRide tuning for optimized aerodynamic components resulting in improved ride, stability and handling for both road and track. Shelby GT350R gets a redesigned high-trail steering knuckle leveraged from the all-new Shelby GT500 for 2020. It also features a new steering rack and recalibrated electric power steering control.
The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350 has a starting MSRP of $60,440, plus taxes, title, delivery and license fees; GT350R has a starting MSRP of $73,435, plus taxes, title, delivery and license fees. The Heritage Edition Package is available for $1,965. Dealers are taking orders for Heritage Edition Package vehicles now, with cars slated to ship this spring. With the North American International Auto Show now moved to June, we’ve had an unusually long dry spell in the Motor City when it comes to automotive exhibitions. The drought was finally broken by the annual Detroit Autorama, held February 28-March 1. Always a major show, this year’s edition was no exception with more than 800 hot rods and custom cars spread over two levels of the TCF Center.
Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s “Outlaw,” honored as one of the 20th Century’s most significant hot rods.
The most memorable display this year was immodestly (but quite accurately) labeled “The Most Significant Hot Rods of the 20th Century.” It was a veritable who’s who of iconic iron featuring tributes to Bob McGee’s ’32 Ford, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s “Outlaw” and “Beatnik Bandit,” Tommy Ivo’s ’25 T-Bucket, and Norm Grabowski’s ’22 T-Bucket – the last immortalized as Kookie Kookson’s ginchy ride in the TV show 77 Sunset Strip.
“Impressive” indeed. The 1963 Chevy wagon that won this year’s Ridler Award. (The chrome on those wheels practically glows!) The biggest excitement always surrounds the Ridler Award, named for Autorama’s first promoter, Don Ridler. It’s the event’s top prize, and only cars that have never been shown publicly before are eligible. Judges select their “Great 8” – the eight finalists – on Friday and, for the rest of the weekend, excitement builds until the winner is revealed at the Sunday afternoon awards ceremony. The winner receives $10,000 and the distinction of having her or his name engraved forever on the trophy. It’s among the highest honors in the hot rod and custom car hobby. This year’s prize went to “Impressive,” a 1963 Chevrolet two-door station wagon built by a father-son-grandson team from Minnesota. With a Ridler now to its credit, no one can question the car’s name again.

Those who are worried about younger generations not being interested in cars could take comfort from the Michigan Midget Racing Association. The organization’s Autorama display featured a half dozen cars that kids could (and did) climb into for photos. Quarter Midget cars are sized for kids anywhere from 5 to 16 years old. And while they look cute, these race cars aren’t toys. Their single-cylinder engines move the cars along at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. M.M.R.A.’s oval track in Clarkston is surfaced with asphalt and approximately 1/20 of a mile long.
Our 2020 Past Forward Award winner – a 1964 Pontiac GTO that matured with its owner. Each year, The Henry Ford proudly presents its own trophy at Autorama. Our Past Forward Award honors a vehicle that combines inspirations of the past with innovative technologies of the present. It exhibits the highest craftsmanship and has a great story behind it. This year’s winner put a novel spin on the “Past Forward” concept. It’s a 1964 Pontiac GTO owned by Fred Moler of Sterling Heights, Michigan. Fred bought the car while he was in college and, appropriately for someone at that young age, drove it hard and fast. When adult responsibilities came along, he tucked the Goat away in a barn. Some 40 years later, Moler pulled the car out of the barn for restoration. He wanted to relive his college days but knew that neither he nor the GTO were the same as they were decades ago. Moler kept the trademark 389 V-8 but replaced the drivetrain with a more sedate unit. He added air conditioning, improved the sound system, and ever so slightly tinted the glass. In his own words, Moler enhanced the car to make it comfortable for his “more mature” self. He brought a piece of his own past forward to suit his present-day wants and needs. Like I said, a great story.

Autorama veterans know that the grittiest cars are found on TCF Center’s lower level – the infamous domain known as Autorama Extreme. Here you’ll find the Rat Rods that take pride in their raw, unabashedly unattractive appearance. By all means, take the escalator downstairs. There are always gems among the rats. This year I was thrilled to find an 1894 horse-drawn road grader manufactured by the F.C. Austin Company of Chicago. Utilitarian vehicles like this are rare survivors from our pre-automobile age. Autorama Extreme is a great place to tap your feet as well. Live music fills the lower level throughout the weekend – lots of 1950s rockabilly, of course, but plenty of blues and soul too.
Don’t miss Toy-a-Rama with its assortment of vintage car books and brochures. Each year, I make a point of visiting Toy-a-Rama at the back of TCF Center. Vendors sell hundreds of plastic model kits, diecast models, memorabilia, and toys. But it’s the great selection of auto-related books, magazines, and vintage sales literature that always reels me in – and leaves my wallet a little lighter on the way out.
A beautiful 1:1 scale model of “Uncertain-T” – some assembly required. And speaking of model kits, maybe the coolest thing I saw all weekend was down in Autorama Extreme. It was a beautifully crafted, partially-assembled model of Steve Scott’s “Uncertain-T” just like Monogram used to make – but this one was life-sized. Really, the giant sprue was terrific enough, but the giant hobby knife and glue tube took the whole thing to the next level. (Skill Level 2, as the box might’ve said.)
All in all, another great year celebrating the wildest, weirdest, and winningest custom cars and hot rods around. If you’ve never been, make sure you don’t miss Autorama in 2021.

2020 Ford GT Gets Even Better with More Power and a Bare Carbon Edition
No one rests on their laurels. The buzz created by Ford when it showed the GT supercar at the 2015 North American International Auto Show has worn off—heck, having a Detroit auto show in January is already history.
Even if you’re a supercar that instantly sold out in 2017 with enough orders to fill two years of production, you have to stay fresh and relevant. Ford Performance answers that call with 13 additional horsepower for 2020, improved cooling, a chance to order the carbon-fiber body unpainted or with an updated Gulf Racing appearance package to pay homage to the 1968 Le Mans–winning GT40.
The 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin-turbo V-6 engine now generates a cool 660 horsepower, and engineers also tweaked the calibration to give it a broader torque band. The car has gallery-cooled pistons and higher-energy ignition coils, as well, all adapted from the GT MkII limited-edition, track-only version. Cooling is always a challenge, so new buttress air ducts are designed to increase airflow by 50 percent and the car has larger intercoolers to keep things somewhat chillier. For more fun, the suspension has been fiddled with for better handling and body control while on the track. Ford has played with exposed carbon fiber before with the GT. The Carbon Fiber Series introduced in late 2018 substituted gloss for paint on the stripes, A-pillars and lower body panels, while the cabin received a matte carbon-fiber, center console, sills and other pieces of trim. But the new Liquid Carbon edition goes further with everything exposed, wearing nothing but clearcoat over the sexy weave. It comes with standard carbon-fiber wheels, as well. It can be further customized with titanium lugnuts, six-point racing harness anchors, and a choice of five interior options and five caliper colors. Want a stripe? You can order the dual center stripes offered on the standard Ford GT or the single stripe found on the Carbon Series. Finish the look with painted mirror caps. It’s all a la carte. But expect to pay about $750,000 if you are one of the ones in line for the new look GT that will start deliveries in the spring.
The other new look for 2020 is an update to the Gulf Oil paint scheme with a black pinstripe between the famous blue and orange. Oh, and the number changes from 9 on the 2019 model to 6 (from the Le Mans winner).
GT production began in December 2016. Originally, Ford planned to limit the run to 500 cars, but to meet greater than expected demand, the decision was made to increase production to 1,350 through 2022. The cars are assembled by Multimatic, the Canadian carbon-fiber and racing specialist, in Markham, Ontario. Only 141 cars were made in the first year; production then grew to 250 a year. Of the four or five vehicles a week Multimatic churns out, one can be a special model.
Ford says it will continue to make the updated 2020 Ford GT into 2022. Base models run about $500,000.

The Unusual Mini Marcos – A Fast, Lightweight Mini-Based Sports Car
The Mini Marcos was a sports car based on the Mini running gear and drivetrain, but with a unique fibreglass body that was designed to be both more aerodynamic and lighter than the original steel-bodied Mini.
The origin story of the Mini Marcos is a fascinating tale that includes a Royal Airforce test pilot named nicknamed Dizzy, a long wheelbase Morris Mini Van with a crushed roof, and a custom steel body. This car was built in 1964 and called the Mini DART, this stood for Dizzy Addicott Racing Team, and it proved both successful and highly influential.
Dizzy’s background as a pilot meant he had a good background in aerodynamics so he gave his new car a Kammback design, with a far more aerodynamic nose, and a cropped roof to reduce the frontal area. Although only one example of the Mini DART was built it would start a family tree that would extend over 50 years into the future.
Two cars were built in the years after the DART that were directly related to it, the most famous was the Mini Marcos, and the other was the Mini Jem. Both cars are somewhat similar but they are unique and there are a slew of differences that marque experts will recognise immediately. For our purposes today we’ll only be talking about the Mini Marcos, but you can read more about the Mini Jem here if you’re interested.
The Mini Marcos was released in six major iterations, namely the Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, and Mark VI. Over the generations the car became more evolved, including sliding windows followed by winding windows, a hatchback, and body changes to make the car more practical.
All model iterations used a fibreglass monocoque body with running gear and subframes from a Mini, a wide range of Mini engines could be used from 850cc right the way up to the 1.3+ litre custom racing engines. The lower body weight and better aerodynamics made the car notably faster than a comparably-powered Mini, and the 15 inch addition to wheelbase length made the car more stable at speed.
Impressively the Mini Marcos was the only British car to finish the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, with French drivers Jean-Louis Marnat and Claude Ballot-Léna taking turns behind the wheel. The plucky little Marcos finished in 15th place overall, rubbing shoulders with Ford GT40s driven by the likes of Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon, Ken Miles, and Denny Hulme. Other competitors were driving cars including the Porsche 906/6, the Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione, the Alpine A210, and the Porsche 911S.
The Mini Marcos you see here is a 1969 Mark IV model, it’s fitted with a 998 cc 4-cylinder Mini engine fed by a single SU carburettor and fitted with a custom set of exhaust headers. This vehicle was set up for competition in the south of France and it would make an excellent candidate for competing in under 1,000cc vintage racing classes where it would doubtless be a fearsome competitor thanks to its low weight and excellent handling.

The 2020 Ford GT is available with an exposed carbon fiber body. Ford calls it ‘Liquid Carbon’.
Ford unveiled two new special edition GTs at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show. The supercar also receive other updates including a minor power bump for the 2020 model year.
The Ford GT Liquid Carbon comes with an exposed carbon fiber body and carbon fiber wheels, which are now part of the standard package. That said, customers can spec their cars with titanium lug nuts and 6-point racing harness anchors. The car can be specced with a single stripe and painted mirror caps as well. There are five different interior options and brake caliper colors to choose from.
The 2020 Fort GT Heritage Edition also gets a new blue and orange livery, carbon fiber wheels and #6 in carbon fiber to commemorate the GT40 chassis no. 1075 that won Le Mans.
The 2020 model has 660 hp from the 3.5-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine. That’s an increase of 13 hp over the previous model. Additionally, Ford is also said to have worked on the engine calibration to widen the torque band. The engine also gets gallery-cooled pistons and higher-energy ignition coils. A new Akrapovic titanium exhaust is now standard. It is 9 lbs lighter than the old exhaust. On the outside, Ford has also reworked the buttress air duct. It is claimed to increase airflow by 50%. The intercoolers are also larger.

Ford GT updated for 2020 with more power, new features Ford has updated its GT supercar for 2020 with increased power, additional standard features and subtle mechanical tweaks inspired by the track-only GT MkII launched last year. The GT retains its 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, but power output has been slightly boosted from 647bhp to 660bhp with the addition of higher-energy ignition coils and a new type of ‘gallery-cooled’ piston design, which helps the engine to perform better at high temperatures. At the rear of the GT, a new buttress shape has been designed to increase airflow over the car by 50%, while larger intercoolers help the turbochargers to operate consistently under load. The suspension behaviour has also been tweaked in Track Mode to enhance body control. A titanium exhaust system from Slovenian firm Akrapovic – up until now an optional extra for the GT – is now standard. It's said to be around 4kg lighter than the standard unit, while retaining the GT’s characteristic engine note. Ford has also announced the introduction of a new special edition of the Ferrari 488 rival. The GT Liquid Carbon is covered all over in a clear coat that leaves its carbonfibre body panels exposed and sits atop a set of carbonfibre wheels as standard. Optional extras include titanium wheel bolts, six-point racing seatbelts and racing stripes. The Gulf Racing Heritage paint scheme, which pays homage to the original GT40 that won Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, returns for 2020 with a new dividing line between the orange and blue portions. The
