VARIATIONS OF THE CAR ENGINE

STRAIGHT ENGINE
The straight or inline engine is an internal combustion engine with all cylinders aligned in one row. Letting My Mind Drift
My family has always been enamored by cars and motorcycles. For a long time that fascination focused on motorcycles exclusively. My uncle bought a harley, which led my grandparents to buy a Harley and Royal Enfield (grandpa and grandma), which led me to buy a Suzuki V-Strom. This was complemented by friends buying yet another Harley, a Kawaski Vulcan, and a Yamaha F-07. Motorcycling controlled our get-togethers for more than 4 years. Eventually the moto-fever faded, but not before it made a lasting impact in our lives. We watched motorcycle documentaries like Why We Ride, shows like The Long Way Down and The Long Way Round, and fell in love with small market makers like Shinya Kimura and even Keeanu Reeves’ Arch Motorcycle Company. In the height of this fascination we also fell in love with BBC’s Top Gear.
As motorcycles transitioned out of our main means of transportation the love remained, but a growing interest in automotives began to seep into the cracks. Top Gear was always on repeat in the Sawyer household. As comes with watching a show this closely, we began to think and even jokingly speak as hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond when we saw cars. Now, years after the Top Gear fallout, The Grand Tour is making its way into our sphere of conversation. But it isn’t alone.
I have always dabbled in driving games. I have fond memories of winning a few races in Gran Tourismo well before I was old enough to understand the ins and outs of tuning an automobile for the track. I remember outrunning the cops in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Street races in Midnight Club, drag races for pink slips in Blur (I think?), drifting in Need for Speed Underground. I have fond memories of specific moments of car games, but very few of those same games have kept my attention for very long.
I tend to attribute this attention deficit to the same reason I don’t really play fighting games. I tend to play my games for the story, diving headlong into narrative adventure, strategy, or roleplaying games. I can play XCOM, Mass Effect, or God of War for days. I find the simplicity, or lack of implicit depth, a bit of a turn off. That’s not me saying those games don’t have depth. I love watching EVO tournaments and enjoy duking it out with friends on occasion, but the learning curve to skill in those games is often steeper than I have patience for, given the fact those games tend to be just that: learning the core mechanics of the fighting and perfecting that knowledge.
I loved to hop into a few races, trade some paint, slide out a slick drift, and grab some air, but I rarely stuck around to perfect any of those skills.
Fast forward to Forza Motorsport 4 and 5. If there is a better example of dipping your towns into something, I’m not sure I know it. I specifically remember jumping in with Ryan (@sergeantsodium) on one specific occasion and attempting to drift. I failed miserably. Then, as if to rub salt in my wounds, Ryan had me pull my vehicle about twelve feet from the wall and proceeded to drift the entire bend leading to my position, and weave his car neatly between my own car and the wall at a cool 50-60mph. It was a marvel to behold. It was also my signal to log off of the game, not come back for weeks, and trade the game to GameStop a month or so later.
Then three things happened: Forza Horizon 4 came out. I learned that my control scheme wasn’t conducive to what I was wanting to do. 2020 happened.
Let's break that down. Forza Horizon 4 came out in 2018 to great reviews. What’s better, it was on Game Pass, so I had no reason not to at least try it. The opening moments were like an IV drip of endorphins. A shot glass full of joy. The music, the changing of seasons showcasing their weather systems, the production, the cars, the visuals. It was an all out assault on the senses.
About a year after that first experience, after again watching Ryan drift an entire roundabout, weaving in and out of traffic without missing a shift or beat, we joined a session together with the express goal of teaching me to drift. In moments I learned that a) I was doing it all wrong, and that b) my settings were also getting in the way. Traction Control off, ABS off, manual shifting on, in moments I felt like a new person.
Then 2020 happened and all of the outdoors interaction in most people’s lives came to a grinding halt. No more bike nights at Schlafly Bottleworks, no more long road trips, nothing. Sometime around May I found my way back into Forza Horizon 4. Sometime around May I found my niche.
Having learned the tricks to drifting, all that remained was perfecting the use of those skills. So i took to the tarmac with my Ford Focus hatchback, a car I actually owned at the time, and began working out the kinks of letting the rear end slide out, handbrake turns, feathering the gas, up and downshifting, using gravity, and nailing the perfect run of drifts. Strangely, a process that once turned me away, turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. It was simple and complex, bundled into one. It was almost zen like at times. The music in my headphones pulsing, the engine roaring under the hood, the snap-crack of the exhaust, the screech of tires. While grinding out the skill of drifting, I began to let my mind, like my car, drift.
Drifting became an escape and car building became an obsession. I would log into Horizon and skim through the car catalogue looking for cars that piqued my interest. Turns out I have a type. Retro and boxy-body, or modern import tuners. I have an ‘80 Abarth Fiat 131 (typically a rally car), a slick ‘81 Volkswagen Scirocco S, an absolutely sharp ‘69 Nissan Fairlady Z 432, a ‘97 Mazda RX-7, a Hoonigan inspired ‘73 AMC Gemlin X, a rip-roaring ‘69 Chevy Nova Super Sport 396, an 81’ Ford Fiesta XR2, and - to keep this list short, ha - a spritely ‘74 Honda Civic RS. You’ll see I left out my ‘17 Focus RS. Honestly, though it started the craze, it is far from the top of my priority list.
Each of these cars I have learned extensively, though I shy away from saying I’ve learned them inside and out. Each has its little quirk, be it powering through longform extended bends or nimbly sliding through tight switchbacks. But still, each feels like a piece of art I built, and each rev, gear shift, and spinout builds my knowledge, banshee shrieking through the streets of Edinburgh, sliding the rain slick streets of Lakehurst Forest, or ripping up and down the rolling switches in Derwent Valley.
When riding a motorcycle there is a moment where your conscious brain, focused on the road and balance, recedes into unconsciousness, allowing your normally subconscious thoughts to creep to the front. You think of abstracts: color, sound, smell, feel. The taste of the rain, the spidering cracks in the concrete beneath you. Forza Horizon 4 has granted a return to a form of that process for me. As the controller rumbles and vibrates in my hands I feel the tires slip out, the engine scream for air, the exhaust bark in protest. My mind drifts into a less stressful place, focused instead on the power I lend the engine, the grip of my tires, the sound of my tachometer redlining out of a turn. My mind imagines the smells of fall leaves, spring showers, summer concrete, and terpene-hinted snow.
And then there is rally. Like drifting, a whole skill unto itself demanding practice. The brief silence as you catch air, a pensive pause, the slam of the suspension when gravity pulls me back down, the crash of water. Feeling the rocks and gravel tumbling beneath my wheels is a new sensation. My ‘82 Lancia 037 Stradale is bucking for more.

Ford Fiesta ST Edition 2020 UK review
Are you considering buying an electric car?This is the latest limited-run special-edition version ofFord'sexcellentFiesta SThot hatch. It's called the Fiesta ST Edition and it's not to be confused with the, erm,Fiesta ST Performance Edition- which is itself a brightly coloured, limited-run version of the Blue Oval's fastest supermini.The easiest way to tell the difference between the Performance Edition andthis here Edition editionis the paint. Where the former is a searing shade of bright orange, this one comes indashing Azura Blue, which actually looks remarkably similar to the Nitrous Blue paint you could have onthe last Focus RS . In fact, with its gloss black bumpers, rear spoiler and lightweight 18in ‘flow-formed' alloy wheels, the Fiesta really does look like a pint-sized version of that fantastic old hyper-hatch.However, AD: Autel MK808 review. those unique styling tweaks are pretty much where the differences between the ST Edition and the ST Performance Edition end. Like that earlier car, this one is based on the range-topping ST-3 trim level, so it gets loads of goodies (including the ST Performance Pack with Quaife limited-slip differential) as standard. Crucially, it also gets the same manually adjustable coil-over suspension, which drops the ride height by 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear. Meanwhile, the engine is the same sweet 1.5-litre three-pot as before, developing 197bhp and 214lb ft - all of which is deployed to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.And the price? Well, that's £27,075, which is rather a lot when the base ST-3 - already a fantastic hot supermini in its own right - costs £24,575. In fact, it's more than Ford asked for the £26,495 Fiesta ST Performance Edition last year. However, whereas 600 examples of that car were built, there will be only 500 of this one - with just 300 coming to the UK. So in addition to that trick suspension, you're paying extra for a bit more exclusivity, I guess.As fantastic as ever. More so, even, thanks to that new suspension. There are 12 bump and 16 rebound settings, with the former being adjusted using a rotary knob at the bottom of each shock and the latter via knob at the top of each shock. You can reach the tops of the front struts by lifting the bonnet, but you'll have to lift the car up and take the wheels off to get at the rest. That seems a bit of a faff but at least it feels more in keeping with the general ethos of this car than it does on, say,a Polestar Engineered Volvowith its trick Ohlins dampers.Regardless, our test car's set-up seemed pretty spot on. It still felt firm and its body movements were kept pretty strictly in check. But this control was nonetheless underwritten by a level of pliancy that I'm not sure I've experienced in a Fiesta ST before. The regular car can be quite savage in its ride over bumpier bits of road. This one felt far less agitated at speed and considerably comfier as a result. Granted, it's still pretty unrelenting at lower speeds, but a bit of aggression comes with the territory in cars like this, so I'm not going to complain too much.Particularly when it drives the way it does. It remains as responsive, agile and incisive as ever, so on a tight, narrow B-road, it is just incredible amounts of fun. I'd go so far as to say that performance cars like this are, in fact, the easiest to get excited about driving quickly in this day and age. I drovea McLaren 620Rimmediately before getting in the Fiesta and I wasn't quite as eager to get going in that as I was in the dinky little Ford. Admittedly, a lot of that had to do with the fact that wet roads and the Macca's cold Trofeo R tyres have the potential to mix about as well as water on an oil fire, but there's the question of performance accessibility, too.You'd never get near the 620R's limits on the road, but the Fiesta's are within pretty easy reach. You can really interact with its engine and chassis in a way that you just can't in so many supercars and sports cars these days. That fact alone goes a considerable way to justifying its £27k price. Alt tyder på at SUV er i ferd med å riste av seg sitt negative miljørykte i Europa. Det kommer frem i en spørreundersøkelse Ford Motor Company har gjort blant 5000 unge i alderen 17-34 år som er på utkikk etter ny bil. Hver fjerde unge bilkjøper ønsker ifølge undersøkelsen å kjøpe en SUV.
Undersøkelsen er foretatt i Frankrike, Tyskland, Storbritannia, Italia og Spania.
Bare i fjor introduserte Ford hele tre modeller på det europeiske markedet: den kompakte Ecosport, den mellomstore Kuga og den store Edge. Alt i alt økte Fords SUV-salg med hele 31% fra 2015 til 2016.
Drivstoffgjerrige motorer
Innen 2020 lanserer Ford også en ny helelektrisk SUV med rekkevidde på minst 480 km.
– SUV-salget øker raskere enn noe annet kjøretøysegment i Europa. De miljøbevisste unge sjåførene er en av de viktigste grunnene til dette. Kunder legger i stadig større grad merke til de drivstoffeffektive motoralternativene som vår egen 1.5-liters TDCI dieselmotor som bare slipper ut 115 g/km CO2 på nye Kuga og den prisbelønte 1-liters Ecoboost-motoren du kan få i Ford Ecosport, sier ansvarlig for markedsføring, salg og service i Ford Europa, Roelant de Waard.
Drives av sosial samvittighet
Den nye generasjonen europeere er ifølge en analyse drevet av sosial samvittighet når de skal kjøpe bil, og de er mer åpne både for både å leie bil/ev. annet transportmiddel som sykkel eller være del av et bildelingssystem. Dette vil også være med å endre Fords forretningsmodell til å være et mobilitetsselskap i tillegg til en bilprodusent.
Eldre kjøper sportsligere biler
Og det er ikke bare de yngre bilkjøperne som har krav til bilens kvaliteter – som er annerledes enn det man kanskje kunne forvente. Data fra Ford viser nemlig at gjennomsnittsalderen på kjøpere av raskere, mer sportslige biler som Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS og Mustang har økt med mer enn 10% fra 2010 til 2016.
For andre år på rad økte salget av denne type biler med mer enn 60% i fjor.

4 – Need For Speed

Lendário jogo dos primeiros PlayStation, o Need For Speed perdeu espaço no console para ganhar no celular.
A tela inicial é nostálgica e mostra o gráfico padrão das versões mais antigas do game. Os modos de corrida variam de acordo com os veículos que você possui em sua garagem.
As provas também ocorrem nas ruas dos Estados Unidos e são curtas. Variam entre entrega de carros, arrancada perfeita e uso de nitros, além de confrontos entre pilotos.
Existe, ainda, o modo campanha. Na medida em que os objetivos são alcançados, novos carros são liberados, assim como gasolina e novas tarefas. O nível de combustível é o que permite ingressar (ou não) nas competições.

5 – Car Mechanic Simulator 2018

Este jogo é ideal para quem sempre sonhou em ser mecânico (ou mexânico).
Afinal, acontece quase por completo dentro de uma oficina, mostrando que não basta acelerar, mas também preparar muito bem os veículos antes de comer asfalto.
Sejam novos ou velhos modelos, é possível atualizar até mesmo a potência dos propulsores.
Além disso, o jogador deve conduzir todo o processo de conserto dos carros, seja desmontando o motor, carregando a bateria ou mesmo testando os carros após serem arrumados.

6 – Euro Truck Simulator 2

O Euro Truck Simulator vai na contramão de quem gosta de pisar fundo no acelerador. Neste game, você é um motorista de caminhão que deve realizar entregas e rodar por todo o mapa.
No início da carreira, é preciso pegar um caminhão por empréstimo para iniciar os trabalhos com fretes e ganhar dinheiro.
No entanto, na hora de negociar suas entregas, não se deve deixar de considerar um valor razoável para poder bancar os pedágios das rodovias e também o combustível do veículo.
Durante a partida, é cobrado o respeito às sinalizações, com punições para quem eventualmente exceder a velocidade máxima da pista ou então ultrapassar sinais vermelhos na cidade.
Além disso, qualquer tipo de batida prejudica as condições de uso do veículo, que perde desempenho e tem de ir ao mecânico. Aí, o jogador deverá pagar pelo conserto do caminhão.
O empréstimo do cavalinho é temporário e o jogador tem de juntar dinheiro para comprar o seu próprio veículo e seguir com a profissão.

7 – Dirt 4

Para quem gosta de rali, o Dirt 4 é um prato cheio. São duas opções de condução: uma para amadores e outra mais avançada.
As corridas acontecem em percursos de terra e circuitos fechados. As competições podem acontecer em qualquer estação climática do ano.
É a oportunidade de conduzir o lendário Ford Fiesta WRC de rali. Mas não só ele: a versão R do Volkswagen Golf também pode ser pilotada, além de picapes superpotentes preparadas para os terrenos mais áridos.

8 – The Crew 2

Essa é a segunda edição do jogo The Crew. Além de corridas terrestres, o game permite competições aéreas e aquáticas.
O jogo já começa com ação, onde o jogador tem de pilotar um Porsche GT3 RS.
Além de participar de corridas insanas e com gráfico avançado, o corredor tem o objetivo de atingir o maior número de seguidores durante as provas – como uma rede social.
Para isso, o modo de condução tem de ser agressivo, com drifts em curvas, grandes saltos, ultrapassagens e pé em baixo nas retas. No caso de aviões e barcos, além de acelerar, as acrobacias contam muito.

9 – F1 2019

Assim como na vida real, os jogos de Fórmula 1 também estão em constante evolução, seja em gráficos ou até mesmo em jogabilidade.
Este game conta com interação dos personagens, que chegam a brigar após sessões de treinos e classificação.
São dois modos de jogo: partida e carreira. Para corredores esporádicos, o primeiro modo é ideal, pois pode-se disputar corridas sem compromisso.
Já no modo carreira, o jogador faz testes para entrar em uma modesta equipe e tem de ser destacar por ela enquanto corre pela Fórmula 2, seguindo os passos comuns dos pilotos da vida real.
As propostas de equipes de Fórmula 1 surgem após uma série de vitórias e premiações.
Durante as partidas, o “piloto de sofá” lida com as condições da pista, do tempo, da equipe e também do carro, que pode piorar em caso de colisão.

10 – Assetto Corsa

Considerado um Full Simulator, o game oferece um catálogo de carros para o jogador. Após a escolha do veículo, pode ser selecionado o circuito em que será pilotado – que mostra comprimento, local e número de boxes.
Ainda pode ser ajustado o clima em que acontecerá a competição, além das condições de pista, do carro e dos sistemas de ajuda de condução.

O ano era 1983: o mercado automotivo brasileiro era dominado por modelos como Volkswagen Fusca, Brasília e Passat, Ford Corcel e Belina, Chevrolet Chevette e Opala e o Fiat 147. Lançado em 1983, o Escort foi o primeiro carro mundial da Ford a ser comercializado no Brasil. Quando ele chegou no nosso mercado, já estava em sua terceira geração na Europa.
O Escort tinha suspensão independente nas quatro rodas, calibrada pela Ford para a qualidade do asfalto brasileiro. Ele começou a ser vendido com motores transversais 1.3 e 1.6 da linha CHT (sigla para Compound High Turbulence, que significa Câmara de alta turbulência) nas versões mais simples L e GL e na mais requintada Ghia.
Escort L 1983
Ford Escort XR3
A versão mais conhecida do Ford Escort, a esportiva XR3 (de Experimental Research 3), chegou no mesmo ano de lançamento do restante da linha. Tinha visual incrementado com quatro faróis auxiliares, aerofólio traseiro, bancos esportivos, lavadores de faróis, teto solar e as charmosas rodas de liga leve estilo ‘trevo de quatro folhas’.
Nesta versão, a Ford recalibrou o motor 1.6 CHT, que acabou por ganhar mais 10 cv de potência. No ano de 1985, a Ford lançava no Brasil o ‘irmão’ do XR3, com carroceria conversível. Um destaque a mais para o esportivo, que nessa configuração, é raro de se ver nos dias atuais.

Em 1986, o visual do Ford Escort passou por mudanças. Capô, grades, faróis, piscas e os para-choques receberam alterações. Além disso, o modelo passou a ser equipado apenas com motor 1.6 e carroceria de duas portas.

Ele ainda ganhou novas rodas de alumínio, painel com iluminação indireta e volante com revestimento de couro. Já em 1989, com a criação da Autolatina, as versões Ghia e XR3 receberam o motor Volkswagen AP 1.8.

Em 1991, duas versões especiais compuseram a linha Escort: Guarujá, de quatro portas fabricada na Argentina, e XR3 Fórmula, que contava com amortecedores eletrônicos e bancos Recaro.

Nova geração
Em 1993, o compacto ganhou uma nova geração no Brasil. Ele recebeu carroceria totalmente nova, maior que a anterior, e o interior recebeu ares mais modernos. O XR3 seguiu em produção, recebendo um motor 2.0 com injeção eletrônica.
A carroceria antiga do Escort seguiu em produção, mas recebeu a denominação ‘Hobby’ para o segmento de carros populares, que ganhou ascensão na década de 1990. Inicialmente, o Hobby recebeu o motor 1.6, posteriormente trocado pelo 1.0.

Já em 1996, com a criação do bloco Mercosul, o Escort passou a ser fabricado na Argentina com uma nova frente. Essa mudança acarretou o fim das versões Hobby, Ghia e XR3. Para a linha 1997, o Escort passou por novo facelift e passou a utilizar o motor 1.8 Zetec. O modelo voltou a ter carroceria quatro portas, ganhou configurações Station Wagon e Sedan (que substituiu o Verona) e a versão RS, de duas portas e com apelo esportivo.

Em 2000, o motor Zetec Rocam 1.6 nacional passou a equipar o Escort e ficou até o encerramento de sua produção, que se deu em 2003. Uma curiosidade é que o nome Escort retornou em um modelo do mercado chinês, mas que não tem ligação alguma com o conhecido clássico nacional.
