Entenda as categorias
Caminhonetes e caminhões são classificados em classes que vão de 1 a 8 nos EUA, divididas pelo peso bruto total (PBT). Os veículos até a categoria 6 podem ser dirigidos com carteira de habilitação comum, com a habilitação de uso comercial (equivalente a CNH E brasileira) sendo exigida apenas para as classes 7 e 8.
A Classe 1 engloba as nossas conhecidas picapes médias, com PBT de até 2.722 kg; A Classe 2a é a da Ford F150, Ram 1500 e Silverado 1500, com PBT de até 3.856 kg; Acima vem a classe 2b, da Ram 2500, F250 e Silverado 2500, com PBT até 4.536  kg. A classe 3 é a última com picapes, englobando as Ford F350 e F450, Silverado 3500 e Ram 3500, com PBT de até 6.350 kg.
As classes 4, 5, 6 e 7 já são caminhões feitos para receber implementos como baú ou carga seca. Por fim existe a classe 8, com cavalos mecânicos.
Os números – como 1500, 2500 e 3500 usados pela Ram – são herança de classificações antigas das picapes. Esses números representavam a capacidade de carga das picapes em libras, ou seja, uma Ford F100 era homologada para 453 kg (1.000 libras), já a Chevrolet C20 era homologada para 907 kg (2.000 libras).
Essa regra caiu em desuso com a evolução das caminhonetes e também com as diferentes opções de capacidade de carga que cada modelo oferecia. Mas os números foram mantidos pela facilidade de identificar a categoria de cada modelo.

Le Salon de Detroit, le dernier en hiver

Il y a presque exactement trente ans de cela, je prenais le train pour me rendre, seul, à Windsor en Ontario. Mon but? Traverser la rivière et passer deux jours à la toute première édition Internationale du Salon de l’auto de Detroit, le tout premier North American International Auto Show. À ma connaissance, il n’y avait que moi du Québec avec mon ami d’alors (le défunt) Jacques Rainville. C’était l’année des grands dévoilements incluant celui du prototype de la Dodge Viper! Le reste, bien entendu, c’est, comme on dit, de l’histoire.
Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, je reviens de la 30e édition du Salon de Detroit, la dernière qui se sera passée en hiver. Le Salon sera de retour en 2020 mais au mois de juin sous la forme d’un grand happening. Et comme si j’avais voulu célébrer l’Évènement, je me suis rendu en train à Windsor (j’ai vécu trop de problèmes avec la neige et la météo hivernale au cours des dernières années que plus jamais je ne voulais y aller en avion et encore moins en voiture). Et pour me remémorer la première fois, j’y ai passé une soirée avec mon grand ami Walter McCall qui, il y a trente ans, m’avait accueilli à la gare de Windsor où il demeurait et où il travaillait en tant que directeur des Relations publiques chez Chrysler Canada. Rendu à 80 ans, ce diable de petit homme est toujours actif car il publie un ou deux livres par année sur les camions de pompier (vous pourriez en vérifier les titres sur Internet). Il est à composer actuellement un volume sur le service des incendies de la ville de Windsor.
J’ai donc participé à cette première journée de presse du Salon de Detroit, la seule où il y aurait des dévoilements de nouvelles voitures. Depuis des années que la qualité de ce Salon décline mais cette fois, ce fut sans contredit la pire. C’est comme si les grands constructeurs locaux avaient décidé de bouder le Salon de leur propre ville au profit de ceux de Los Angeles et peut-être même New York. Toutefois, pour l’amateur de technologie, il fallait être à ce Salon de Detroit pour y voir ce qui s’en vient au cours des prochaines années…presque un voyage dans le futur…presque!
Voici donc un court relevé de ce que j’ai pu voir au Salon de Detroit, le North American International Auto Show (qui fut aussi boudé, comme bien d’autres salons internationaux, par les constructeurs allemands comme Mercedes, BMW et Porsche et par quelques autres grands noms comme Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda et autres!)

Cadillac a profité du Salon de Detroit pour y dévoiler (la veille de la journée de presse) son nouveau grand VUM, le XT6 et pour y annoncer que la marque sera le fer de lance de General Motors en matière de véhicules électriques, (Photo Éric Descarries)

Ford a ouvert le bal de la journée en lançant sa nouvelle génération d’Explorer tant en version Interceptor de police qu’en version hybride ou encore en version de performance ST mue par un V6 de 3,0 litres à double turbocompresseur de quelques 400 chevaux. (Photo Éric Descarries)

Ford a aussi fait le bonheur des amateurs de performance en dévoilant la version 500 GT de sa Mustang Shelby. Son V8 suralimenté de 5,2 litres fait plus de 700 chevaux et il vient avec une boîte à double embrayage. (Photo Éric Descarries)

Les amateurs de camionnettes ont été bien servis par FCA qui a profité de ce Salon pour nous faire connaître la version Heavy Duty de ses nouveaux Ram 2500 et 3500. Si le moteur de base de ces pick-up traditionnels demeure le V8 Hemi à essence de 6,4 litres, le moteur turbodiesel optionnel Cummins de 6,7 litres développe désormais quelque 1000 livres de couple ce qui fait du Ram Heavy Duty le plus puissant pick-up de sa catégorie avec une capacité de remorquage de plus de 35 000 livres! La légendaire Supra de Toyota a été officiellement lancée au Salon de Detroit. Développée conjointement avec BMW, le superbe coupé sportif a aussi été montré aux côtés des versions de compétition et NASCAR (Xfinity). Quant au constructeur allemand Volkswagen (probablement le seul de cette origine européenne sur place), c’était à son tour de dévoiler une nouvelle auto, soit la grande Passat redessinée pour 2020. En même temps VW annonçait la construction d’une deuxième usine aux États- Unis juste avant de confirmer son alliance avec Ford. Ce dernier aidera VW dans le développement et la construction de pick-up intermédiaires alors que l’Allemand apportera son support au géant américain pour les plateformes de voitures électriques. On pouvait voir au stand Nissan une étude de style (une denrée très rare au Salon de Detroit de 2019) qui nous indique quelle direction le constructeur japonais compte prendre au cours des prochaines années. Chez Kia, on procédait au lancement du VUS intermédiaire Telluride basé, en grande partie, sur son cousin, le Palisades de Hyundai. Mû par un V6 de 3,8 litres, le Telluride affiche une ligne légèrement plus robuste que le Palisades et le constructeur le démontrait en offrant aux visiteurs une courte ballade en circuit hors-route dans le salon même ! D’autre part, chez Hyundai, c’était au tour de l’excitante Elantra GT de se montrer en version de production de finition N. Enfin, c’était le retour du constructeur chinois GAC avec ses nombreux VUS et sa fourgonnette qui annonçait ses premiers pas en Amérique du Nord. Je ne peux passer sous silence la présentation de l’étude de style QX Inspiration d’Infiniti que j’ai malheureusement manqué. Mais ce n’était pas de ma faute! Celui-ci y avait un stand intéressant où l’on pouvait voir le fameux Roxor, une sorte de réplique de Jeep des premières générations mue par un petit quatre cylindres diesel. Capable d’une vitesse maximale de 45 m/h,  ce sympathique petit véhicule ne peut légalement pas rouler sur nos routes. Il s’agit là d’une sorte de petit VTT côte-à-côte amusant. Il y avait aussi au stand Mahindra une petite fourgonnette (?) commercialisée qu’en Inde (mue par un quatre cylindres diesel et reposant sur un châssis-cadre rigide), la Marazzo, qui pouvait y justifier sa présence car elle a été développée aux studios de la compagnie au Michigan! Perhaps even bigger news in the powertrain department is the addition of an Off-Road Plus setting for the driver-adjustable four-wheel-drive system. This allows higher vehicle speeds with the rear locker engaged, Allen says, and you can bet this feature will migrate to the Wrangler lineup, likely by the ’20 model year. While Allen declined to comment on the possibility, Off-Road Plus already has us thinking of a future where even more high-speed capability sees Jeep battling the Ford F-150 Raptor and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 with potential high-performance versions of the Gladiator and Wrangler.
Maximum towing is 7,650 pounds for the Gladiator Sport S, some 500 higher than the max for a Wrangler Unlimited. Jeep has shaken up the trim levels from what’s available in the Wrangler models. Like the Wrangler and Unlimited, the ’20 Gladiator starts with Sport and then moves to Sport S, but an Overland trim level displaces the Sahara. Rubicon is the top trim level here, as it is on the Wrangler.
The marque’s first pickup truck since the XJ Cherokee–based 1992 Comanche arrives in the second quarter of next year with specs that should satisfy the brand faithful. But is there perhaps another reason Jeep is using a model name last affixed to a version of the Wagoneer? Perhaps because the next eagerly anticipated model from Fiat Chrysler’s off-road brand is a reborn Wagoneer, which will also be built on a version of the platform used for the Ram 1500 pickup truck.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Pickup Finally Arrives: Here Are the Official Details
With Jeep having previously confirmed that it is calling its new pickup truck the Gladiator, you’ve by now heard (or made) all the references to Peter Graves’s toss-away line in “Airplane”—“Joey, do you like trucks called the Gladiator?”—and resolved yourself to the brand’s rationale for resurrecting the name. There was, says Jeep design chief Mark Allen, “a little bit of reluctance to call it a Wrangler truck.” Indeed, Jeep has a history of separate nameplates for its pickups, including Gladiator, Scrambler (which had been rumored to get the nod), and Comanche. Gladiator traces back to the 1962–71 Wagoneer-based truck, was used on a 2005 concept, and as a production model has now made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show ahead of a second-quarter 2019 market launch.
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator shares its body from the C-pillar forward with the Wrangler Unlimited, but not all of its underpinnings. While the pickup truck’s front suspension is identical to the Wrangler’s solid front axle with coil springs, the rear has a five-link coil-spring setup in place of trailing arms, with two upper and two lower forged steel control arms for longitudinal control, and a track bar for lateral control of the axle. The control arms are located under the frame rails, and the rear shocks are forward facing for more consistent damping, Jeep says. The rear suspension design is borrowed from the new Ram 1500 pickup, which has a wheelbase 3.2 inches longer than the Gladiator’s. For its part, Jeep says the Gladiator’s frame is unique to the model.
At 218.0 inches long, the truck is 29.6 inches longer than the Unlimited, which itself is 19.6 inches longer than the two-door JL Wrangler. The Gladiator’s wheelbase gets 19.4 of those additional inches, standing at 137.3 inches.
The five-foot pickup box will be available with a spray-in bedliner, as well as a soft, roll-up tonneau with a small slit in back so you can slip in a 2×4 without fussing with it. There are aluminum extrusions with cleats for tie-downs, in-bed LED lighting and an optional 115-volt power outlet. The spare tire has been moved underneath, and there’s room for aftermarket 37-inch tires, if you want to replace the factory 35s. Jeep considers the Gladiator a “lifestyle” pickup truck good for hauling motorcycles, bicycles, and kayaks rather than for hitting the work sites. It surely will handle hauling extra gear on your next Moab expedition.
Most of the interior layout is the same, at least from the front seats forward. The rear-seat bottom cushion can flip up as in most other pickups, and it sports removable locking storage bins under the cushion. As seen in many current pickups, the Gladiator will have a three-piece rear window with a power-operated middle pane that will slide to the driver’s side.
The Jeep Gladiator will be available with either of the Wrangler Unlimited’s two roof options. The body-color hardtop features removable “Freedom Panels” over the front seats, while the cloth soft top can open all the way, four-door-convertible style. In the case of either top, the Gladiator’s doors can be removed with a hand tool, and the windshield can be folded down. With the soft-top option, the Jeep Gladiator becomes the first factory convertible pickup truck we can remember since the Dodge Dakota ragtop of the ’80s.

Future Cars: FCA’s Next Five Years
Sergio Marchionne has rolled out his third five-year plan for FCA, and with it a torrent of teases of vehicles the automaker plans to have on the market by 2022. Not all may make it. With nascent trade wars and the rise of populist nationalism threatening the intricate supply lines of the world’s most globalized industry, FCA, like other automakers, is facing one of the most challenging business environments in decades. And with Marchionne planning on stepping down soon, his successor may wish to place his own stamp on FCA’s future product strategy.
Marchionne made it clear FCA’s product push over the next five years will center around four key brands: Jeep, Ram, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo. “These four are our global brands,” he said bluntly. “They account for about 80 percent of earnings.”
Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat scarcely received mention during the day-long presentation. Virtually every reference to the 62,000 minivans FCA will supply to self-driving technology developer Waymo described them simply as Pacifica Hybrids; only Marchionne used the “C” word when talking about the Pacifica. Once.
Dodge wasn’t mentioned at all, until the post-presentation Q&A session, when someone asked the inevitable question. Marchionne’s response? “Dodge is a North American brand.” He also hinted that to save money future Dodge vehicles may be developed off a heavily re-engineered version of the current LX architecture rather than move to the premium Giorgio platform than underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. Marchionne notes that while Chrysler will be a “people mover” brand, Dodge will be a performance-oriented brand.
Other nuggets: Marchionne said talk of major sales volume for the Fiat brand in North America is “a waste of time.” Along the way, he announced the Punto, a Golf-sized hatchback, is to be discontinued, and that Fiat’s focus will be switched to hybrid and BEV powertrains for the 500 family and Panda in a bid to give the brand a more premium position in Europe. The Fiat 500e will sit on a dedicated electric platform. And Maserati boss Tim Kuniskis gave credence to rumors of an all-electric Ferrari supercar when he announced all future Maserati powertrains—including the high-performance three-motor BEV—would be supplied by Maranello.
Here’s what FCA is planning for Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati over the next five years.
  JEEP
Here’s how much the automotive landscape is changing: Jeep boss Mike Manley never once used the term SUV during his presentation. To Manley, and the rest of the on-message FCA senior management team, Jeeps are UVs—utility vehicles.
Why the semantics? Jeep is working on two vehicles, one the size of a Cherokee and the other the size of a Renegade, that combine the all-wheel-drive traction and configurable interior of a conventional SUV with the handling and dynamics of a car. These “urban UVs” will also feature a low roofline and what Manley calls “command-of-the-road” ride height.
Other new Jeep models in the pipeline include an all-new model smaller than the Renegade, and the long-awaited Jeep midsize pickup truck, which, according to the rumor mill, will be called Scrambler and will arrive in April 2019. A three-row model will join the Grand Cherokee, a key move as 60 percent of that segment of the SUV market is three-row, Manley noted. Topping the expanded Jeep lineup and accompanying the Wagoneer will be the flagship Grand Wagoneer, which is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in 2020.
The Trailhawk (ultimate rock-crawling capability) and Trackhawk (ultimate on-road capability) variants of selected Jeep models have proven such sales successes that Jeep is introducing a third capability sub-brand, Deserthawk, that will be applied to Jeeps with high-speed off-road capability in sand. Manley expects Deserthawk models to comprise up to 10 percent of total Jeep sales, delivering a $5,000 to $10,000 increase in transaction price.
Jeep is also going electric, with eight PHEV models on sale in the U.S. by 2022. There will be two basic formats. Vehicles with front-mounted engines and all-wheel drive/rear-wheel drive, such as Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, will feature an e-motor mounted between the internal combustion engine and the transmission that will allow low range rock-crawling in pure EV mode. Vehicles built around a front-wheel drive architecture, such as the Renegade and Cherokee, will have a rear-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels. Four BEV Jeeps will be available in China, including an all-electric version of the Grand Commander.
  RAM
FCA calls it “The Raptor Effect.” With options and extras, the average transaction price of Ford’s desert-racer spec F-150 is about $71,000, or a healthy $28,000 over the average F-150. What’s more, Raptor buyers are younger than the average F-150 buyer, and earn twice the median income. To FCA product planners, that’s the definition of a market opportunity. So it’s no surprise the Raptor-fighting TRX, previewed as a concept at the Texas State Fair, has been greenlit for production.
The TRX will be the halo model of the Ram 1500 lineup. There is no official word on powertrains, but sources are suggesting an entry-level model with about 520hp, while the top-line model could get a version of the 707 hp Hellcat V-8.
Also coming is an all-new Ram Heavy Duty, scheduled for launch in January 2019. The current truck is the oldest in the segment. FCA says the new model will offer a stronger diesel engine than any of its Ford or GM rivals.
The success of midsize pickups such as Chevy’s Colorado in the U.S. market has also been noted at FCA. But the midsize Ram pickup currently under development is also aimed at European, Asian, and South American markets, where the segment is booming. The midsize Ram will share its underpinnings with the similarly sized Jeep Scrambler, including the similar rear axle design, and the availability of a hybrid powertrain.
  ALFA ROMEO
“We underestimated the complexity of the industrial process, and we underestimated the reaction of our German competitors,” said Marchionne of Alfa Romeo, sales of which have been slower than expected. But FCA is doubling down on the storied Italian brand, with two new SUVs and two new sports cars—each reprising an iconic Alfa model name—joining the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV by 2022.
The all-new Alfa Romeo 8C will be a 700-plus horsepower Acura NSX fighter, with a mid-mounted twin-turbo engine driving the rear wheels, and an e-motor driving the fronts. This Alfa supercar’s chassis will be made from carbon fiber, and FCA says we can expect scintillating performance, with a projected 0-60 mph acceleration time of less than 3 seconds.
The Alfa Romeo GTV is a four-passenger coupe that will share its chassis structure and powertrains with the Giulia sedan. It will have sleeker, sexier sheetmetal and 50/50 weight distribution. Top-spec QV versions will have all-wheel drive and more than 600 horsepower courtesy of an e-motor mounted between the engine and transmission.
In terms of ensuring the brand’s long-term viability, however, the two new SUVs—one smaller than the Stelvio, the other larger—will be the most critical vehicles Alfa Romeo launches in the next five years. While the midsize premium SUV segment in which the Stelvio competes is expected to grow from 1.6 million units sold last year to 2.2 million units by 2022, sales of compact and full-size premium SUVs are expected to grow to a total of 3 million units.
The smaller of the two Alfa SUVs will be the size of a Jeep Compass, and is likely to share its platform architecture, which means transverse-mounted engines. The larger SUV will be built on the plus-sized Giorgio architecture shared with the next-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both will be available with PHEV powertrains.
With three SUVs, two sports cars, the Giulia sedan, and a new front-wheel-drive Giulietta hatch for the European market, FCA aims to be selling 400,000 Alfa Romeos a year by 2022.
  MASERATI
Maserati’s lineup will be entirely renewed by 2022, led by a refreshed Ghibli sedan and a redesigned Levante SUV that will share its underpinnings with a redesigned Quattroporte sedan. The GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible will be replaced by coupe and convertible versions of the Alfieri, both of which will be built on a version of the Giorgio platform.
New to the Maserati lineup will be a Stelvio-sized SUV, which FCA hopes will help boost the brand’s overall sales to 100,000 vehicles a year by 2022.
Maserati will offer four BEV models, versions of the Quattroporte, Levante, and the Alfieri coupe and convertible, all marketed under the Maserati Blue label. The cars will feature three e-motors—one at the front axle, two at the rear—and all-wheel drive with active torque vectoring. Maserati boss Tim Kuniskis said the electric-powered version of the Alfieri coupe will have a top speed of close to 200 mph, and will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 2 seconds.
“Some think we’re targeting Porsche, and some think we’re targeting Tesla,” said Kuniskis. “We’re targeting both.”
