About Karol G - the Woman who Rose to the Top of the Reggaeton World
One artist that I have been listening to non-stop lately is a Latin artist who goes by the name of Karol G. You may have heard her name as she has become famous not only in Latin America but globally. Karol G is a Colombian artist of mainly the reggaeton, Latin trap and hip-hop genres. Reggaeton is defined as a music genre that blends Jamaican influences of reggae music with Latin American dance hall music and hip-hop influences. Throughout her career, Karol G has collaborated with many well-known artists in Latin America, but in the U.S. as well, which have helped boost her to the global status she maintains now.
Her first hit was “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me) featuring Puerto Rican trap artist Bad Bunny in 2017. She continued to produce more hits such as “Culpables” (Guilty) in 2018 with Anuel AA, another famous trap artist like Bad Bunny. There were rumors about her dating Anuel after they released that song, so by the end of 2018, the two released a song together confirming their dating relationship to the public called “Secreto” (Secret) which was another success. The two had a “power couple” status commonly compared to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s level in Latin America. Karol G continued to release more hits such as “China” in 2019, which was a collaboration with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin - all who are popular Latin reggaeton/trap artists, “Tusa” (Heartbreak) with Nicki Minaj in 2019, “Bichota” (Bad B*tch) in 2020, “Provenza” (Provence) in 2021, and she featured in Becky G’s song “MAMIII” in 2022. To clarify, these are only some of her top hits which had charted the billboards and even won her Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, etc.
As we can clearly see, Karol G did not fail to stay relevant in the music industry since her breakthrough in 2017, with a new release or feature every consecutive year. However she did not immediately start out in the limelight when she began pursuing her music career. Karol G’s real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro and she was born and raised in Colombia. She was first recognized for her musical talents when she performed on the Colombian version of The X-Factor in her country when she was 14 years old, and a few years later, she had her first record contract with Colombian company Flamingo Records and Puerto Rican company Diamond Music, and by then she chose her artist name to be Karol G. She released a few songs from 2007 to 2010 but they were not very successful, so she continued to study music at the University of Antioquia in Colombia. Karol G then traveled to Universal Studios in Miami, Florida where she presented her project but was rejected to be signed for a record due to her gender. Karol comments about it in an interview with PAPER magazine, "About nine years ago, I went to Miami for the first time; my parents got me a meeting [with the label]. I presented my project,’ she says, ‘and they liked it. But they said I could maybe be a songwriter, but a woman making reggaeton? That wouldn't work.’”.
This is because reggaeton has always been a male-dominated genre so not many women have become popular in the genre, with a few exceptions like Dominican artist Natti Natasha, Mexican-American artist Becky G, and Puerto Rican artist Ivy Queen, who became famous in the early 2000s and is known as the “Queen of Reggaeton”. However, it can be safely said that there are many more mainstream male reggaeton artists, like the artists I had previously mentioned. Even the “King of Reggaeton”, Daddy Yankee, who you have probably heard of before, is more globally known than the “Queen of Reggaeton”. In fact, I even asked my friend, who was born and raised in Dominican Republic until he migrated to New Jersey at 16 years old, if he knew who Ivy Queen was, and he said he did not know her, but of course when I mentioned I was writing about "reggaeton", the first person he thought of was Daddy Yankee.
However Karol G was not deterred by the rejection and continued to perform wherever she could back in Colombia with the support of her father, but by 2014 she moved to New York to try to boost her career in America again. Karol G saw an advertisement for business administration classes on the subway, which helped her learn more about the industry. From that time until she released “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me) with Bad Bunny in 2017, Karol G released some more songs, one of them called “Ricos Besos” (Sweet Kisses) which was a hit in Colombia, and she signed with Universal Music Latino. Karol G created a strong foundation for her career which can explain how she is flourishing now as a global reggaeton icon and did not end up as a “one-hit wonder”.
I personally admire Karol G a lot because she is a strong advocate for woman empowerment and breaking the misogynistic boundaries of the reggaeton genre, which she has demonstrated through her rise to the top of the reggaeton world with songs confidently embracing her femininity and sexuality.
youtube
From just looking at some of the lyrics from her breakthrough song “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me), Karol G states, “Yo soy dueña de mi vida, a mí nadie me manda” (I am the owner of my life, no one controls me). Marty Preciado of NPR Music describes this song as, “A bass-heavy, unapologetic trap anthem to the power of femininity, soiled in hi-hats and heavy sub-bass, the song challenges hegemonic masculinity, singing about respect, love and sex-positive decisions… Karol G confidently states about the ownership, control and enjoyment of her life, femininity and sexuality.”
youtube
Another one of her biggest hits, “Tusa” (Heartbreak) became a global anthem for women, as the reggaeton song is about a woman trying to get over her ex and heal and to remind her to “know her worth”. The collaboration with Nicki Minaj, who has been globally known as the "Queen of Rap" for years and is never ashamed to express her sexuality and boost confidence in fellow women, makes the song an even more powerful piece of motivation to help women move on to bigger and better things.
youtube
Karol G’s song, “Bichota” (Bad B*tch) is another viral anthem of femininity where she created her own unique term from Puerto Rican word “bichote” which means “a powerful drug dealer”, to “a strong and empowered woman”. She explained further in an interview on the “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, “I wanted to create a ‘bichota’ but its meaning is going to be: a bitch boss girl, powerful, great, incredible, doing her things by herself, you know?”.
youtube
The last track that I think really shows Karol G’s support for women is not a part of any of her albums, since she was the featured artist, but “MAMIII” by Becky G is a reggaeton track about female empowerment for ending a toxic relationship, which many women can relate to.
I think these four songs that I mentioned were really unique in the reggaeton genre because since it is such a male-dominated genre, there are not many reggaeton songs about women ending toxic relationships or female empowerment. In fact, it is a very common trend in reggaeton for male artists to over-sexualize and objectify women in their songs instead, so the fact that Karol G made all these four songs that basically diss men and motivate women into hits, shows that the genre is moving in a new direction.
Altogether, Karol G is such an inspiring icon for women, proving that she overcame barriers due to her gender by making a name for herself in a genre that has barely been touched by women. I think it is important to recognize that she is truly changing the industry through her consistent billboard chart-topping hits, her creation of “bichota”, a new female-empowering term, and just her overall loyal global fanbase. In fact, the same company that rejected Karol, Universal Studios, actually offered her a contract 7 years later because of her global status, so I think she is living proof that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
I would like to end this blog post with a motivating quote that Karol G said in an interview with the LA Times, “For years, I heard that women do not do reggaeton. Reggaeton and urban music belong to men, but as a woman, you belong to men. Now women are on another level. We are well prepared to lead. We've earned it and we're going to fight for it”. Hopefully we can continue to see Karol G progress with even more hits and be able to break the boundaries of reggaeton with her large influence. If you would like to take a listen to some of Karol G's music, I have linked her Spotify playlist below!

Artists Of The Year 2022 Presented By MSR
So today I will be my annual Artist of the Year for the year 2022 presented by MSR (Midnight Star Report). We have been doing this since 2018. This year there are 10 artists in Country Music we will be talking about their year. So let's get started right now.
The first of the 10 artists that we will talk about for this year's honor is Kenny Chesney. This is Kenny Chesney 1st time being named one of my artist of the year. Kenny Chesney had a perfect swan song for the end of his career with "Knowing you" which topped the list 3 times total. But then there was a song with Kelsea Ballerini titled "half of my hometown" which topped the charts 3 times total. Up next we will talk about the year for the next Artist of the year for 2022 in Jimmie Allen.
Jimmie Allen had released a lot of music in 2022. I did 2 CD reviews for him in 2022 and this is Jimmie Allen's first artist of the year on my list. Jimmie Allen teamed up with Brad Paisley on a track "Freedom was a highway" which topped the charts 3 times total. And most recently Jimmie Ended the with "Down home" being the final regular number 1 for CMT (Country Music Television) and gaining another time at the top on the charts for a total of 2 times. And that is at the time of writing this which gives Jimmie Allen a total of 5 times at the top. The next artist of the year for 2022 that we will talk about is Miranda Lambert.
Miranda Lambert had a good year in 2022 which earned her first ever artist of the year. Miranda Lambert teamed up with Elle King on her track "Drunk (And I don't wanna go home)" which topped the charts 3 times total. Then Miranda's song "If I was a cowboy" CMT kept pushing up their charts which helped Miranda earned her first ever artist of the year on my list. Miranda Lambert had 4 times total at the top. Up next we will talk about one of the special mentions for Artist of the year in 2022 which is Cody Johnson.
Cody Johnson will not be a special mention for artist of the year in 2022. He will be an artist of the year as well. Cody had the song of the year, and in fact on CMT Year-end video Countdown, He has the number 1 video for the year 2022 with the huge hit "'Til you can't". The song topped the charts a total of 8 times and he was the leader until later in the year for total times at the top. I just hope the song isn't too much to overcome when comparing his other singles that he will put out in the future. Up Next we will talk about a 4 time artist of the year in Thomas Rhett.
Thomas Rhett has been an artist of the year on this list in 2018, 2020, 2021, and now 2022. Thomas Rhett topped the charts with a song titled "Slow down Summer" and that was for 1 time total. Thomas teamed up with Riley Green on a song titled "Half of me" which topped the charts a total of 2 times. Thomas Rhett isn't the only Artist to be a 4 time Artist of the year. Let's talk about the year for Luke Combs up next.
Luke Combs has a more quiet year with raising his new kid. But he still made some noises on in the year 2022. Luke has been an artist of the year every year since 2019. So that's 2019 to 2022. Luke first topped the charts this year with a track titled "Doin' this" and that was 3 times total. And then Luke topped the charts this year once again with the track "The kind of love we make" which was 2 times totals. And if you want to hear a version of that song with Riley Green performing it, and he did it on CMT Artist of the Year special 2022. Up next I want to talk about the year for Cole Swindell.
Cole Swindell really took his year up with teaming up with his friend Lainey Wilson on the track "Never say never" and that track topped the charts 6 times total. And then Cole brought in the 90's vibes with his single "She had me at heads Carolina". And he even did a version with Jo dee Messina at the CMA Awards this year. And "She had me at heads Carolina" has topped the charts a total of 6 times and is still going strong today as well. Cole had a total of 12 times topping the charts. And up next let's talk about the 2nd special mention Artist of the year in 2022 which is Mitchell Tenpenny.
Mitchell Tenpenny had a banger of a year in 2022. Mitchell released a new cd titled "This is heavy". Mitchell had 2 songs going towards the top around the same time. The first was with Chris Young titled "At the end of a bar" which topped the charts a total of 2 times. The second was titled "Truth about you" which only topped the charts 1 time. But it has put Mitchell on our radar now. We have 2 artist of the year left before we go. Up next is a 3 time Artist of the year in Kane Brown.
Kane Brown is a 3 time artist of the year 2019, 2020, & now 2022. Kane had a really good year in 2022. Kane released "One Mississippi" off of his new album "Different man" which topped the charts a total of 2 times. But then he brought out the 90's vibes just like Cole on the track "Like I love Country Music" which mentions a lot of our favorite artists. "Like I Love Country Music" topped the charts 5 times total. But if we had 1 artist to sum up this year in 2022 and totally be the artist of the year that would be Morgan Wallen.
Morgan Wallen had a hell of a year in 2022. After everytime that happened in 2021 for this artist. He truly made up for loss time. And with that Morgan earned his second artist of the year in 2022 (The first being in 2019). Morgan first topped the charts with the song "Sand in my boots" which was 3 times total. And he earned his artist of the year with the song "Wasted on you" which topped the charts a total of 7 times. But then he became the artist of the year is 2022 for sure with "You proof" a total of 16 times topping the charts.
And that is the wrap for the 10 Artists of the year in 2022. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this special report. And I would like to thank my beautiful wife @KrystaMousey for working on my blogs. And I want to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, if this blog is posted in time. Thank you for all you do. See ya all next time.

The scenic Blue Ridge Mountains resort welcomes golfers, families, friends and couples looking for a one-of-a-kind retreat in the great outdoors
Auberge Resorts Collection is delighted to announce that it will welcome Primland, a majestic all-season mountain retreat in Virginia, to Auberge’s portfolio of award-winning hotels, resorts and residences as of June 1. Located at the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains on 12,000 expansive acres, Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection offers luxurious accommodations, a championship golf course, exquisite farm-to-table cuisine helmed by new Executive Chef Elliot Cunniff from Soho House in New York City, a serene spa and a level of outdoor adventure that is unrivaled on the east coast. In one of the most breathtaking mountain settings, the resort boasts impressive year-round activities for the entire family, including golf, horseback riding, fly fishing, alfresco yoga and meditation, kayaking, hiking, sporting clays, archery, stargazing in one of the largest observatories in the Eastern U.S., RTV trail riding and tennis. With Auberge Resorts Collection’s highly personalized service, Primland will be the quintessential escape this Summer.
“We are incredibly honored that the Primat family has chosen Auberge to be the stewards of Primland, one of the most spectacular resorts in the country,” said Dan Friedkin, owner and chairman, Auberge Resorts Collection. “It is an absolute privilege to bring our brand to this unparalleled experience in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.”
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection was initially purchased by late French industrialist, Mr. Didier Primat, in 1977 as an outdoor activity retreat for his family. In the early 2000s, Mr. Primat decided to expand the land’s capabilities and construct the resort and golf course in an eco-conscious and thoughtful manner. Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is rooted in a love of the land, which is expressed in the resort’s extensive efforts to minimize the impact on nature while enjoying its beauty.
“Auberge Resorts Collection has mastered a crafted approach to unique and personal service,” said Harold Primat, president of Primland. “We are excited to partner with the award-winning brand to realize our family’s vision to create one of the top-end mountain resorts in the U.S. and share the Primland experience with guests from around the world.”
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection features 62 rooms, including standalone cottages, cabins and treehouses. At the center of the property—which was recently voted "Best Resort in the U.S. South,” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2020—sits the Lodge, featuring a soaring great hall with twin fireplaces, a full-service spa, fitness center, indoor swimming pool, private theatre, game room and one of the largest telescopes and observatories in the Eastern U.S. The resort’s exceptional culinary program boasts three regional cuisine restaurants, a two-story wine cellar and private dining experiences for intimate gatherings and celebrations.
One-of-a-Kind Accommodations
Accommodations boast beautiful mountain settings with amenities such as in-room fireplaces, private balconies with undisturbed views and deep soaking tubs. The main Lodge features nine Mountain Rooms and sixteen Blue Ridge Suites. The Lodge’s most exclusive suite is the Pinnacle Suite, a two-story 1,800-square-foot glass-walled aerie located in the observatory tower, providing stunning views of the stars and vistas.
Across the property are several styles of standalone accommodations. The chalet-like Pinnacle Cottages and golf course Fairway Cottages each contain separate wings with rooms and suites that can be booked individually or groups can lodge together by opening up the common living room. The resort also features 11 spacious Mountain Homes containing between one and seven bedrooms.
Just a short drive from the Lodge, three Tree Houses are perched on the edge of the mountains, offering an experience that nods to Primat’s love of nature and the region. These intimate cabins are set in the strong limbs of the property’s oldest and most beautiful oak trees, giving way to treetop views of the majestic Kibler Valley and North Carolina piedmont from a vast private deck. While conjuring childhood memories, each of the Tree Houses is unique, taking on its own personality through bespoke decor.
Farm-to-Table Blue Ridge Mountain Cuisine
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection’s exceptional culinary destinations and programming are overseen by Executive Chef Elliot Cunniff, who joined the resort in Spring 2021. Chef Cunniff comes to the resort from New York City, where he got his start working under Daniel Boulud before moving up the ranks to, most recently, executive chef at Soho House New York. Chef Cunniff brings a wealth of creativity to all of the resort’s exceptional restaurants, including the signature restaurant, Elements, a harmony of the Virginia Highlands’ natural abundance and Southern comfort flavors, beautifully presented in a fine dining atmosphere. The property’s more relaxed eatery, 19th Pub, serves casual, hearty pub fare alongside a bar well-stocked with draught beers, single malts and spirits, as well as moonshine cocktails, which harken back to the region’s rich bootlegging history. The Woodland Grill is located at the Outdoor Activities Center for easy grab-and-go sandwiches between adventures. Schlumberger Wine Cellar, located in The Lodge and perfect for private events, features varietals from the world’s finest vineyards, including the resort’s sister property, Domaines Schlumberger, in France’s Alsace region. Set on its own ridge top is Stables Saloon - located in Primland’s former horse stables - where traditional Southern food and live bluegrass music come together for a rustic and convivial dining experience.
Adventure and Wellness
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection centers around its vast acreage and outdoor activities, just as Mr. Primat intended when he purchased the property as an outdoor retreat. One of the most beloved experiences of The Lodge is deep space star gazing through the professional-grade telescopes at the Observatory. The Outdoor Activities Center offers fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, archery, RTV trail riding, sporting clays and water sports on the 3-mile long Talbott Lake. For golf enthusiasts of all skill levels, the Highland Course at Primland is an 18-hole, Audubon-certified, all bentgrass greens course carved from the mountains’ natural landscape by renowned golf course architect Donald Steel.
After a day of adventure, The Spa at Primland offers rejuvenating and energizing treatments that combine Native American healing rituals and European spa techniques.
A Destination Worth Exploring
While guests may find everything they need and more on the property, Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection is surrounded by enchanting mountain attractions and numerous local towns that are well worth exploring. From the quaint shops of Meadows of Dan to the historic Mabry Mill, Fairy Stone State Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, local wineries and an abundance of bluegrass and country music festivals, there is so much to see and do on a day trip outside the gates of the resort.
“Each of our properties is unique and captures the soul of the destination, and Primland encompasses the best that the Blue Ridge Mountain region has to offer. It is a natural fit for Auberge Resorts Collection,” said Craig Reid, president and chief executive officer, Auberge Resorts Collection, “We look forward to welcoming our guests to this extraordinary destination.”

Rhiannon Giddens Spanks CMA for “Spitting on the Legacy of Country Music” with “No-drama Zone”
The County Music Association kicked up some drama in seeking to create a “no-drama zone” for country-music fans.
Rhiannon Giddens was not happy with the CMA’s pronouncement that its annual awards show (Nov. 11) would be a respite from the trials of 2020. She mocked the organization for “spitting on the legacy of country music” with the following advertisement.
“It’s been a year, y’all,” it reads. “But ... next Wednesday ... this is a no-drama zone. More than 20 one-of-a-kind performances will help you forget the weight of the world for just a little while.”
Giddens, for one, won’t be tuning in to watch Reba McEntire, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Maren Morris, Rascal Flatts, Lady A, Keith Urban, et al.
“Nice!,” the former Carolina Chocolate Drop said in a rare tweet whose sarcasm was palpable.
“Thanks for spitting on the legacy of country music, which is born out of drama AND the weight of the world. But go ahead and enjoy your ultra-capitalist, milquetoast creation with a lily-clear conscience!”

Welcome Back Chickies: Gaslighter Review
Growing up, I didn't listen to the (formally named) Dixie Chicks but, I would go visit family in South Carolina a lot and recall hearing their songs in many of Crackel Barrels’ my mother would bring us to. Around 2016 is when then started to come into my brain because thats when I started becoming heavily interested in the music industry, the history of it, award shows, etc. So of course, I did research about their conventional 2003 moment when lead singer, Natalie Maines, spoke about how she felt about President George W. Bush sending troops to Iraq. After that, I did research on their blacklisting and how aggressive the country community when after them just because she said that statement... I saw that they swept the 2007 Grammys and won Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Then of course in 2016, Beyoncè performed with the Chicks at the CMA awards and they performed “Daddy Lessons” and I loved every bit of it; and Taylor Swift had them featured on 2019′s Soon You’ll Get Better, playing the background instruments that add so much emotion to an already emotional song. As the years have gone on, I have been hoping for them to make a comeback because I just knew they had things to say, and boy was I right. Gaslighter is an extremely solid piece of work and great way for the Chicks to reintroduce themselves.
When The Chicks announced the new era and released the title track and lead single “Gaslighter” on March 4, 2020, I immediately loved it. I loved how catchy it was and it feels like a real anthem. I got hooked on it and then got very excited for this new album to come on May 1, 2020. Well... as we all know a huge worldwide pandemic came towards the U.S. right after March 4th, 2020 so The Chicks postponed their album and looking back I think it was a smart move. Seeing producing God and fellow New Jerseyan, Jack Antonoff executive produce this album made a whole lot of sense. There will never ever ever be better storytelling in songs than country songs. Period. The country genre has the best storytellers in the whole world. Every song comes from an experience that the person went through, but they are always experiences that the listener can relate to. The ONLY critique I have about this album is the cover. I absolutely hate the album cover. I understand how its suppose to be the three of them as their younger selves but, the picture of the three of them with the gas masks on holding flower bouquets should’ve TOTALLY been the cover! Something special about this album is I like every song and there’s only one that isn’t my favorite. My least favorite is “Texas Man” and I don’t necessarily know exactly why that is. It’s just not sticking to me like the rest but that could possibly be because I don’t need a “Texas Man” right now.
One of my favorite songs off this album is “Julianna Come Down”. Ever since the first time I heard it, I find myself constantly singing it in my head. This song also has a great story behind it that I heard in an interview The Chicks did with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. Natalie was saying how Jack went to work with Julia Michaels, pop star and modern songwriting goddess, and he brought back some songs they worked on to The Chicks. Natalie said that he played her a demo called “Julia, Calm Down” that was only one verse and a chorus, and she fell in love with it immediately. If I can recall correctly, right after hearing it, she recorded those parts and wrote new verses with Martie and Emily’s daughters’ names mentioned and all their nieces. Jack called Julia and said The Chicks love the song and want it for their new album and she said something like “Yeah, they can have the verse but I think I’m gonna keep the chorus!” and Natalie was having known of that and got on the phone and told Julia to come to their studio and hear what the Chicks recorded. Eventually Julia liked what they did and agreed to giving them the whole song. I just really loved that story because Julia Michaels is my favorite songwriter of our generation and to see that she is so kind that she would give such a personal song to The Chicks was really nice.
Standout Tracks: “Gaslighter”, “Julianna Calm Down”, “Everybody Loves You”, “Tights on My Boat”, “March March”, and “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.
Rating: ★★★★(&½)☆

Chair55 Releases Third Single from Label – Walter Finley “While The Sun Still Shines (The Fishing Song)”
Based out of North Carolina, singer/songwriter Walter Finley is no stranger to the music industry. Walter grew up on the East end of Long Island and music was Walter’s therapist from his rough childhood. He spent a lot of time alone, sometimes up to 8 hours a day, which gave him ample time to hone his guitar playing skills. Musical influences include Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Vince Gill, George Benson, Chet Atkins and more recently Aaron Lewis. Walter has been the recipient of many awards and award nominations. Just look at this list: 2021 International Singer Songwriters Association US Emerging Artist of the Year, Queen City Awards-2020 Male Artist, 2020 Josie Award Nomination for Song of the Year-“While The Sun Still Shines”, International Singer Songwriters Association Nominations, including; Male Vocalist, Male Rising Star, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year. Also, in 2020, Walter and his longtime companion April Dawn were the recipients of the Carolina Country Music Associations Duo of the Year. Now, Chair 55 is proud to announce the official radio release of “While The Sun Still Shines (The Fishing Song)”. “While The Sun Still Shines” has already garnered national and international radio airplay. “The song came about on the day David Bowie died”, says Walter. “I was living on a 30 acre farm and from my office I could see my fishing pond, about 3 acres and I never took the time to go walk around it and fish. North Texas Students Among High Schoolers Celebrating Surprise Taylor Swift Question On AP Exam MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) — Needless to say, North Texas high school student Alyssa Brown was not expecting to see a question about Taylor Swift on her Advanced Placement US government and politics exam. “I opened the free response questions, and the first question was about Taylor Swift, and I was just laughing,” the 18-year-old said. “I thought it was pretty cool.” READ MORE: Alleged Bank Robber Arrested, Charged Following Fingerprint Analysis Brown, a senior at Summit High School in Mansfield, is not alone. High school students across the country this week were pleasantly surprised by the pop star’s cameo on their year-end exam. The question — which noted that Swift inspired voter registration ahead of the 2018 midterm elections by posting about her politics on Instagram with a link to voter registration website Vote.org — appeared on the May 3 version of the 2021 AP US Government and Politics exam. Since 2018, Swift has spoken up about politics a number of times and lent her music to an ad targeted at young voters in final stretch of the 2020 campaign. Question Relates To Key Themes Of AP Course According to Jerome White, a spokesperson for the College Board, Swift’s 2018 voter registration Instagram post connects to key themes of the course. The College Board administers the AP program, which allows high school students to take college-level courses with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both. The AP US government and politics course “provides a college-level, nonpartisan introduction to key political concepts, ideas, institutions, policies, interactions, roles, and behaviors that characterize the constitutional system and political culture of the United States,” according to the College Board. White said that the question about Swift asked students to analyze how voter registration laws and procedures can affect civic participation, such as voter turnout. “We’re delighted to hear that AP students could relate what they’ve learned in their AP course to what they experience in their daily lives — and in this case, what they’ve read on their Instagram feeds,” White said, adding that the question will not appear on the May 20 or June 3 versions of the exam. When asked, some students said the unexpected question was comforting during an otherwise stressful period. READ MORE: Texas Saw 16% Spike In Deaths From Drivers, Passengers Not Wearing Seat Belts In 2020 Miri Feigin, a 17-year-old junior at Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, was wearing a Taylor Swift 1989 Tour sweatshirt while taking the exam. “I am a huge Taylor Swift fan. I’ve been a fan for my whole life,” Feigin said. “That question sort of boosted my confidence and helped me write a stronger free response.” “Exams usually make you feel like, ‘Oh you won’t know these people… it’s usually about important figures who are older. Seeing a younger artist it made me feel comfortable in a way,” said Romeo Rodriguez, an 18-year-old senior at Avant Garde Academy in Hollywood, Florida. “I one hundred percent appreciate that [the College Board] put the question on the test,” Rodriguez added. While not yet eligible to vote, Feigin said the question made the test more relatable. “I remember being ecstatic when (Swift) made the post,” Feigin said. “The question definitely made me realize how so many young people participate in politics for different reasons, and I’m happy that Taylor could help more young people get involved.” And Brown, who registered to vote in 2020 after seeing a similar post on Instagram from YouTube star David Dobrik on Instagram, said she saw herself reflected in the test question. “When I saw the question, I immediately thought about the David Dobrik situation,” she said. According to all three students, seeing the question on their exam helped them think further about the way young people and celebrities can participate in politics. “Especially celebrities with really big platforms, if they tell people to go vote, there’s a chance they will actually go vote,” Brown said. “The question made me think about how celebrities can impact your decisions, more so than I already had.” MORE NEWS: ‘It’s Somebody’s Pet’, Bengal Tiger Seen Wandering Around Houston Neighborhood (© Copyright 2021 CBS Broadcasting Inc. Fresh Artist Fridays: The Authentic
PRESSURE is the song you play when you need to feel heard by your music. The Authentic’s inspiring lyrics punch you in the gut and leave you with a feeling of motivation and determination. The lyrics grab your attention from the beginning and refuse to let you go for the duration of the song. “I see today standing in my way. Trouble’s always present so I get down on my knees and pray.” The song is a candid admission of the stress we feel just trying to get through life. The Authentic raps about how he knows life won’t be easy, but he will do everything he can to provide for his family and take care of himself. PRESSURE tackles the emotions that come with feeling adversity and difficulty perfectly. It’s open about how hard it can be to feel depended on, but also makes it clear that nothing will stand in The Authentic’s way. Its music video is equally as inspiring, showing ordinary people go through life struggling but determined to make it. Check out PRESSURE, along with the rest of the songs off of The Authentic’s 2020 project, Politics, War & Religion - Mixtape Series Volume One.
The Authentic Bio
In a day and time when music is strictly about glamour and entertainment, The Authentic stands as one of the last true MC’s focused on reality lyrics, a crazy flow, a one of a kind style and the real essence of Hip Hop. With so many replicas in the industry, The Authentic’s pure passion for the music allows him to stand in a league of his own and truly fits the definition of his title. With a flow that places him in a league of his own and a sincere love for his craft, The Authentic doesn’t hold back; addressing social issues and taking direct aim at whack rappers. Through his career, The Authentic has fully utilized his diverse experiences in life to develop a strong versatile catalog; with motivational tracks that depict the streets reality like hit single “Shining Star”, up-tempo Hip Hop anthems like “Turn It Up”, and party bangers like “Oh My God”. With over 10 solid years ripping through the underground, hundreds of performances under his belt, radio appearances and five solid mixtapes with thousands of units moved; The Authentic has firmly secured his slot in the game. Working hard to build his reputation and master the craft of being an MC (Master of Ceremony), he has performed all over the country, from New York City (Nuyorican Poets Café, Revolution Bookstore), Philadelphia (The Trocadero, Love Park, and Wells Fargo Center), North Carolina (NC State University, Dorton Arena), Las Vegas (Planet Hollywood and The Bunkhouse) and many more. His diligence, determination and natural raw talent has earned him respect from some of the most reputable figures in the game, including: DJ Rashaun, DJ Scratch of The Roots Crew, DJ Touchtone, DJ NoPhrillz and has landed him on stages with superstars such as, KRS ONE, Big Daddy Kane, Naughty By Nature, Jadakiss, Styles P, Musiq Soulchild and more. With his sound, his resume and pure passion for the culture, The Authentic truly represents a lost voice in Hip Hop. In addition to being in a league of his own when it comes to lyrical content and experience; The Authentic separates himself from the pack by being more than just another artist. Over the years, he has dedicated a majority of his time off the stage to building his community and standing as a voice on various social issues. In 2011, The Authentic created an annual event called “The Authentic Minds College Fair Tour”, which hosted over 50 colleges, guest speakers and live performances held at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center located in North Philadelphia. This College Fair alone generated a wave of media buzz and lead to the interest of multiple sponsors. By establishing himself on the corporate side, The Authentic has created multiple opportunities to perform and organize entertainment events for companies and organizations. The Authentic has also served as a Community Relations Director and spokesman for various Non Profits and local movements. To him, Hip Hop is a way of life and a culture and he feels that the mic should be utilized to depict real life and to open people’s minds to a reality that most people do not understand. The Authentic’s love for Hip Hop started in the 80’s at a very early age, listening to legends such as RUN DMC, KRS ONE, LL Cool J, and witnessing local break dancing competitions and DJ battles. He became fascinated with the expressions of the culture in every aspect and embodied being a key figure to continue the movement. While growing up in South Jersey, he witnessed his mother struggle to pay the bills and embraced all of the usual elements of the hood; violence, drugs and poverty. As he adapted to his environment, he gravitated to the mic to speak on exactly what he experienced first hand and continues to do so. The Authentic hit the scene hard in the late 90’s, touring the Northeast with Wyclef Jean’s award winning group City High. Shortly after the tour, The Authentic’s group, at the time, signed a joint venture deal with a local independent label and No Limit records, which eventually fell through. Following the fallout of the deal, he quickly bounced back rocking stages with Lil’ Kim, Tracey Lee, Jackal the Bear, and landed a slot on the radio with Legendary DJ Jay Ski; all before graduating high school. By the grace of GOD, The Authentic headed to Raleigh, NC after high school to attend college and to pursue new music opportunities. With so many colleges in the area and a solid underground scene in NC, The Authentic’s career excelled all while trying to balance school work, hustling to pay tuition and his passion for Hip Hop. The Authentic hit the ground running by tearing down college talent shows and was eventually booked to open for DJ Clue, Jadakiss, Petey Pablo, Styles P and D.C., go-go music legends Backyard Band. In early 2000 The Authentic was selected to headline the CIAA Championship Game at Dorton Arena, as well as the CIAA Hip Hop Hoops Tour, which hit colleges through MD, VA and NC, including NC Central, VA State and Winston-Salem State College. This tour led to him landing a deal with an affiliate label of the NBC television network. The Authentic teamed up with Raleigh’s illest underground MC “Bubsy” to form a group called “Lock n Load”, which dropped two hit singles on the “One Hot Minute Compilation”, a collaborative effort by NC’s top artists from around the state. Both singles released received hundreds of spins from Richmond, VA to Raleigh, NC to Florence, SC. Following graduation from St. Augustine’s College with a Public Relations degree, The Authentic released his first underground project “Vision of Hope” which sold over 500 units all while teaching elementary school and creating youth outlet programs in the poverty stricken city of Henderson, NC. After putting in work in NC, The Authentic headed back home to Jersey embracing his degree, but sucked back into the traps of the hood. He continued making mixtape appearances and rocking shows all through the tri-state. Living in Trenton during one of the worst stretches of gang violence in the state’s history prompted the release of “The Line of Fire Mixtape”. It became the theme music, depicting the reality and moved over 1,500 copies on the street and in local stores. While “The Authentic’s” reputation was growing in the area, he suffered the lost of his cousin, best friend and roommate, Tone; who was shot in the back twice a few hundred yards from their home, while The Authentic was rocking his first show in NYC. After the lost of his cousin, he felt strongly about turning further away from the streets and using his voice more as a tool for awareness of the realities that the inner city youth face. From that point, he embraced his cousin’s last conversation with him, in which he reminded The Authentic that his role is to be “The Public Relations of the hood”. Following The Authentic’s explosion on the scene in Jersey, he relocated to Philadelphia to build his brand in the nation’s 5th largest city. In no time he began smashing open mics and local shows in every section of the city earning him spins and respect amongst the areas top DJ’s, such as DJ NoPhrillz, DJ Touchtone, DJ Jay Ski and DJ GregNitty. The Authentic blazed through the city with his mixtape release “Reality of it All”, followed by “Real Recognize Real” with hit single “Turn It Up”, which gained him national attention getting radio spins on FM stations from New York City, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Philly’s 100.3 The Beat. The national buzz set the tone for The Authentic’s next mixtape “Righteous Kill Mixtape Vol. 1”, packed with versatile hits and moved 5,000 units in the street with no budget. With things in motion, he continued to make appearances all through the city from Unity Day with Chaka Khan, Philly Fest with Mos Def and Musiq, The Old Skool Jam with KRS ONE and Roxanne Shante, The Rotunda, The Trocadero, and XO Lounge with Philly Swain and Reed Dollars. He headlined Philadelphia Schools Stop the Violence Tour, West Philly Day, Nicetown Day, South Philly Day and Mantua Day with Naughty by Nature. The Authentic also showed up heavy on the radar with a feature on well known Gunz n’ Butter productions DJ J-Scrilla compilation “Culture of Honor” featuring Cassidy, DipSet, Tek and Reef The Lost Cauze.

Taylor Swift also made history at Sunday’s ceremony, by becoming the first female artist ever to win album of the year three times.
The star was rewarded for her lockdown album Folklore – after previously winning with Fearless in 2010 and the pop opus 1989 in 2016.

Jessie Lee
Jessie Lee is a Canadian based singer-songwriter who’s all about reflections, revelations and romance. Her light, but expressive, vocals comprised of catchy melodies make for easy listening. Although it’s been three years since the release of her solo EP, First Love, she has kept busy songwriting and working with exceptional artists, producers and writers. Her latest single, ‘Body Sings’, is a collaboration with producer, Daniel Espina, and an exciting expression of getting lost in the benefits of true love and real connection. The combination of electro/indie bedroom pop vibes, mixed with Jessie’s angelic vocals, will have you floating and feeling inspired. "When listening to my new single, ‘Body Sings,’ I hope that you imagine yourself dancing with the person you love, which for me is my fiance,” says Jessie. “I think about that butterfly feeling you get when the energy is exciting and free. ‘Body Sings’ started off with a groovy bass line from producer Daniel Espina, one of those songs that just flowed because it felt so right! Colourful, and light, it’s meant to emit love and encourage the vibrations we give off in that pure state of love embracing a real connection. Whether that be with someone else or just yourself, I think we all could use a little bit of high vibes right now!" Listen below.

Jandry Palms
Jandry Palms is the solo music project of Madrid, Spain born artist Alejandra López de la Osa. After several years of composing music alone in her room, especially as a tool for channeling her emotions, in April 2020 when the world went on a lockdown, Alejandra found the courage to contact multi-instrumentalist Manuel Cabezali to get her music produced. The outcome was five songs between dream pop and psychedelic pop with a common thread: love, in all it's different variations. Each song presents a different love phase or situation. After the release of 'Meant to Be' and 'Tonight (I'll Be the One)', Jandry Palm's third single 'Thinking of You' has arrived. With this danceable tune, full of psychedelia, Jandry Palms shows her love for Australian band Tame Impala and others from the genre, like LA band Sports. The story behind this new song is a reflection of a love phase she was in. The mystery of not knowing her lover's true feelings for her and the need to understand if it was mutual or stopping herself if it was just a game. Listen below.
Leahy
Leahy is a Canadian powerhouse of musical siblings who have been playing together their entire lives. Their brand new album, Good Water, reminds us that we are all connected by a need and desire for those things that give and sustain life, like water. ‘Tears’ is a song about the highs and lows of life that teach us about who we are. So often tears are only associated with sorrow, suffering or pain but there are equally powerful tears of joy, love, healing, freedom… In this song tears are not only the real physical expression of emotion – "getting it out," but also a marker of an ongoing process that leads to learning, growing, understanding, empathy, awareness, forgiveness… Leahy draw from a variety of musical styles and influences. Produced by Grammy-award winner David Bottrill, they were open to all possibilities when it came to treating and arranging the music. Good Water expresses the many shades of being human. Their lyrics touch on everything from love, growth, and change to sight, pain, hope, redemption and relationship. Even though life is sometimes messy and difficult, we have to hold on to hope. Listen to ‘Tears’ below.

Lybrah
Swedish independent artist Lybrah is finally releasing her long awaited debut single ‘Female NRG’. Since early childhood, Madeleine Svaneberg Li aka Lybrah has lived and breathed music. She wrote her first song at 5 years of age and has stayed productive since then, writing and producing over hundred songs so far. As a true DIY artist she writes, produces and records all of her songs in her own home, and now we are finally getting to take part of the end-result. ‘Female NRG’ is an electronic R&B track with an ambient flavour, mastered by David Pietras, and the odds are high that the sound will leave you speechless with her angelic-like soprano voice together with the punchy and expressive beat. Listen below.
Slowe
Bristol-based producer and songwriter Slowe creates soul-warming, home-cooked music, blending neo-soul influenced production with introspective lyrics and velvet vocals. Slowe has spent the last few years in self-imposed musical hibernation, developing, learning and writing and is currently working on releasing her self-produced album. Her latest single ‘WYLTK’ is about the unspoken thoughts we have, the ones we sometimes wish we’d say, and the things we don’t say to keep from stirring up confrontation. Listen below.
LiLL
Behind LiLL you´ll find the songwriter and producer Tuva-Lill Elwerdotter who was born and raised in the south of Sweden, now based in Stockholm. She has a background in folk and world music and a master's in music production. LiLL released their first single in 2018 and have since worked with their own music and with other artists such as Bozett, and El.SY. She draws her musical inspiration from musicians such as Susanne Sundfør, Grimes and Banks, but also Selena Gomez and Cardi B. LiLL create a magnificent pop sound where analog synthesizers meet heavy beats mixed with a little Swedish melancholy. LiLL had this to say about her latest single ‘My Only Heart’: “I had to write this song, it poured out of me. I was going through a tough period in my life at the time. I got dumped för the second time in 3 months and had recently moved to a new city. I felt quite heartbroken and alone in the world. And at that time, this song saved me. The work allowed me to express my difficult emotions and shift focus. It's a healing and powerful process, to be able to create your emotions with sound and get an outer perspective.” Listen below.

Jada Naidu
Jada Naidu is a South London singer-songwriter. She tends to write very personal and open lyrics in the hope that her listeners too connect to her music. Growing up her musical inspirations included the soulful performances of Adele and Amy Winehouse, alongside the more pop and punchy works of Ariana Grande and Rihanna. She is also inspired as a songwriter by the lyricism of Taylor Swift. The songwriting process of her latest single ‘in your eyes’ was inspired by personal troubles that her friends were experiencing at the time. “I found that my friends were experiencing such intense emotions, however they were struggling to come to terms with this or even find the words to explain how they were feeling in that moment,” explains Jada. “I think this alternate perspective allowed me to write the song quickly, as I was able to evoke emotions in my lyrics without over complicating the narrative. It also helped create comfort for my friends, as they began to come to terms with their situation. At first I was hesitant to release the song, through my own lack of experience in the songs narrative, however I felt it was important to release the song in the chance that someone listening to it felt comfort or understood in the topics of the song, being heartache and feeling misunderstood in a relationship.” Listen below.

Carolina East
A creation of the maritime elements, Carolina East is a vibrant, bold, songstress from Newfoundland and Labrador. Proudly wearing an eclectic tapestry of musical influences, from soul to country, to pop. Her brand new single, ‘Until You Are Sorry,’ is about a relationship that didn't end well, and the frustration which stemmed from that. “There was a lot of gift-giving and apologizing, but no personable attempt at solving the problem; just band-aid solutions. Problem-solving deserves time and effort, not quick fixes or grand gestures,” says Carolina. "’Until You Are Sorry’ is the second song I wrote and recorded with Rob Wells. The atmosphere was very comfortable, despite the vocals being recorded in a closet! When writing about a personal and difficult time, you have to put yourself back into that frame of mind, which can be a challenge. Every time you perform, you have to tap into those same negative emotions to give the most genuine performance,” she continues. Listen below.

Faye Fantarrow
Faye Fantarrow is an 18 year old singer-songwriter from Sunderland with an acoustic/indie pop sound. Her new single ‘Boom’ is her second release. "I wrote ‘Boom’ in the first lockdown when quite frankly everything was falling apart,” explains Faye. “It felt like the world was on it’s knees, in a time when we should have all been most unified in facing a pandemic, the globe was polarised. Every day I was turning on the tv to see injustice after injustice after injustice; from socio-economic to racial. I found -probably like most people- that I started to resent the world and I developed this hatred for the outside because I felt like nothing good could come from it. It took a couple days of moping about for me to give myself a shake and think “for christ sake if you’re this upset do something then”. I wanted to feel like I wasn’t completely helpless so I started signing petitions, making an effort to educate myself, trying to help raise awareness and when that still didn’t feel like enough, I wrote ‘Boom’. I’m not going to try and sugarcoat or censor why ‘Boom’ was written because that would undermine the reasons behind the track. ‘Boom’ is a song about being fed up of the backwards way the world tries to work sometimes and using your voice to say no, thats not good enough!"
