2020 Cadillac CT4-V AWD First Test: The Caddy That Vigs
The new 2020 Cadillac CT4 lineup is being pitched as a subcompact entry aimed at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes A-Class/CLA-Class, and Audi A3/S3 sedans. But as has so often been the case throughout the brand’s recent history, the CT4 lands as kind of a “tweener” in many respects—aligned in price with the subcompacts but sized closer to the compacts. So does it come off as a roaring bargain, or like a big kid in class who was held back for a grade or two?
Our first crack at the CT4 is (for now) the top performing model—the CT4-V. But Cadillac is quick to point out that its price and performance are aligned with the mid-level (35 and 43 models) from Mercedes-AMG or an S3 in Audi’s lineup of A3/S3/RS3. This may in part be an attempt to manage expectations vis-à-vis the CT4-V’s 464-hp/445-lb-ft ATS-V predecessor. This is not that car.
How Much Power Does the CT4-V Make?
For motivation, the CT4-V uses a custom-tailored version of the big 2.7-liter turbo I-4 engine that we’ve praised in its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup applications, hitched to GM’s wonderful ten-speed automatic. The engine shares its basic block and head design with the pickups, along with the three-profile sliding cam-lobe valvetrain technology that supports active-fuel-management (cylinder shutoff for the middle two cylinders) to help tailor the engine’s power delivery and fuel efficiency to suit the driver’s demands. A Cadillac feature we love, which the pickups don’t get, is a variable exhaust snarl punctuated by fuel-cut snorts during shifts and overrun.
How Refined Is the Truck Engine in This Cadillac?
Last June, when defending a potential personal purchase of a base CT4 over the V (before any of us had driven either car or a 2.7-liter pickup), I expressed skepticism about the big four-banger achieving luxury car smoothness and refinement. Well giant counter-rotating balance shafts and sufficiently absorptive powertrain mounts must be doing the trick because I detected no untoward vibrations in the car—or the truck. I was never even aware of the engine operating in its two-cylinder mode, so either that almost never happens, or the various countermeasures work wonders. Indeed, the intake and exhaust notes are actively managed via Cadillac’s sound systems to remove unwanted frequencies, but this 2.7-liter nevertheless ends up sounding a bit coarser than the 2.0-liters powering its competitors.
How Fast Is the CT4-V?
In our 3,780-pound CT4-V, each horse tugs 11.6 pounds around—that’s 2–6 ounces less than the burden each horse bears in an Audi S3 Quattro, BMW M235i xDrive, or Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic. Among established competitors, the only one we have test numbers for is a 2016 S3. That pre-facelift (and now last-generation) model weighed 3,420-pounds and routed 292 hp through a six-speed twin-clutch transmission (it has since lost 4 hp and gained a seventh cog). It hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to a 13.0-second, 105.3-mph quarter. We hope that our 595-miles-new CT4-V will perform better as it loosens up because we suspect the lighter A 35 and M235i will accelerate more like that S3.
The Hydra-Matic 10L60 deserves a strong shoutout here for its ability to keep this engine humming between the optimal points on the power and torque curves. It always finds the ideal gear for every situation, and it quickly senses when you’re ‘going for it,’ and flashes a “performance shift active” message in the instrument cluster, after which a green gear icon stays lit while it’s active. How Is the Ride and Handling?
Rear-drive CT4-Vs get the latest Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 damping system, which now includes accelerometers mounted to each damper, but the space required for this extra equipment doesn’t package with all-wheel-drive, so our test car features new passive variable-damping shocks from ZF. (They save enough money to allow Cadillac to offer AWD for just $500.) So Is the CT4-V a Performance Bargain or Too Big for Its Class?

All the Cars Being Discontinued in 2020
The 2020 model year is upon us, and while the automakers are quick to tout what’s new, there are also a round of cars and SUVs that will get the axe. Here’s a comprehensive look at all the cars being discontinued in 2020, including why they got killed—and it’s also worth noting that the below cars and SUVs could represent the best deals on 2019 cars, since automakers usually offer big incentives to get dead cars off dealer lots.
Aston Martin Vanquish
All good things must come to an end. Though it’s been replaced by the DBS Superleggera, which is a better and more modern car all around, we’ll still miss the Vanquish. This was a car that had it all—beauty, passion, and power. Farewell, old friend.
Audi TT
The first-gen TT and its Bauhaus styling helped redefine Audi, though the final iteration isn’t quite as iconic. Audi is killing off the TT to make room for EVs and crossovers, but there’s a chance it could return as an electric sports car.
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo
Not quite a sedan and not quite a hatchback or an SUV, the 3 Series Gran Turismo was not quite a hit with buyers, so it’s joining the list of discontinued cars for 2020. We called it the duckbilled platypus of the BMW line, and we’re not surprised that won’t be part of the new 3 Series lineup.
BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and Gran Coupe
As the 8 Series arrives to replace the 6 Series, the beautiful Gran Coupe is returning but the ungainly Gran Turismo is being killed off. The 6 Series Gran Turismo was a refugee from the 5 Series line, and we’re not terribly sad to see it go.
Buick Cascada
The Buick Cascada was an underrated car, a tidy (if heavy) convertible designed by Opel, GM’s former European division. For whatever reason—the Buick badge, perhaps?—the Cascada never caught on with buyers, and it’s being quietly killed off for 2020.
Buick LaCrosse
GM is looking to shutter plants and shift its focus to SUVs and EVs, and the Buick LaCrosse is one victim of the cull. Don’t tell your grandfather, as it’ll only further strain his weakened heart.
Cadillac ATS
Technically, the ATS being discontinued for 2020 in name only; it’s been reworked, and since Cadillac hasn’t had a nomenclature shuffle in a few years, it gets a new name to go with its redesign: CT4. We’re looking forward to the the CT4-V, a replacement for the much-loved ATS-V.
Cadillac CT6 (maybe)
The Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the CT6 is made is scheduled to close, although a current UAW strike might result in it staying open. But unlike many of its other big sedans, GM hasn’t made any firm announcement about whether the CT6 will be killed off for 2020 even if the factory is indeed shuttered. Our fingers are crossed, because the 550-hp CT6-V is pretty damn good.
Cadillac CTS
The CTS joins the list of discontinued cars, being as it is being replaced by the all-new CT5. The CTS has toiled in anonymity thanks to its rather bland styling, and we’re hoping the CT5 will be a measurable improvement. We’ll miss the CTS-V, though.
Cadillac XTS
As with most of GM’s other big front-drive cars, the XTS takes the exit for the Road to Nowhere, this despite a refresh just two years ago. We offer our deepest condolences to the chauffeurs who are still reeling from the loss of the Lincoln Town Car.
Front-Engine C7 Chevrolet Corvette
After nearly 50 years of mid-engine Corvette teasers, it’s hard to believe the C8 is here—and even harder to believe that the front-engine Corvette is no more. Ever since the C5, the front-engine Vette has been holding its own against some of the world’s best sportsters. Vaya con Dios, old friend.
Chevrolet Cruze
Like most compact cars, the Cruze shed buyers who increasingly moved to small SUVs, including Chevy’s own Trax and Equinox, so it’s being killed off for 2020. The Cruze had been in production worldwide for years, and the newest iteration was kind of cool, which makes us sad to see the promising compact join the list of discontinued cars.
Chevrolet Impala
GM is putting the sword to all of its big front-drive sedans, so die-hard bowtie fans who have been resisting the move to SUVs will have to make do with a Malibu. The Impala was a good if somewhat understated car, and we’ll almost miss it. It’s going to be odd to not have a Chevrolet Impala on the market, isn’t it?
Chevrolet Volt
When the Chevrolet Volt first came out there was nothing else like it. Nowadays there are plenty of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), but for some reason the Volt never caught on. With no siblings (save the slow-selling—or should we say no-selling—Cadillac ELR) to help amortize the cost of its batteries and powertrain, it’s no surprise the Volt is being discontinued for 2020.
Ferrari 488
It seems like the 488 Pista just got here, but now the 488 GTB is going away, replaced by the F8 Tributo. The new car is of course lighter, more powerful, and (arguably) more beautiful. Isn’t progress wonderful?
Fiat 500 and 500e
Fiat’s U.S. sales are plummeting, and now the first Fiat to come here will be the first to go: The 500 and all of its variants will be killed off for 2020. (We are sad to see the 500 Abarth go.) Fiat’s 500X, 500L, and 124 Spider aren’t selling any better, so time will tell how long they last.
Ford Fiesta
Like GM, Ford is focusing (pun intended) its American lineup on SUVs and trucks, and as Henry II himself said, “Mini cars mean mini profits.” The Fiesta was among the best-driving subcompacts on the market, especially in ST guise, and the new one looks so promising. Of all the discontinued cars absent from Ford’s 2020 lineup, we’ll probably miss the Fiesta the most.
Ford Taurus
Back in the mid-’80s, the Ford Taurus revolutionized the American sedan, but it’s hard to get excited about the model today—even the cops don’t seem to like it much. The Taurus came in with a bang, but it will be discontinued with a whimper.
Hyundai Santa Fe XL
The last-generation Santa Fe was divided into two models, five-passenger Sport and seven-passenger XL. But now that Hyundai has a proper seven-seater, the jumbo-sized Palisade, the XL has been dropped from the newly-redesigned Santa Fe’s lineup.
Infiniti QX30
Wow, that was fast. Infiniti is pulling out of Western Europe, the market for which the QX30 was intended and indeed where it is built (Sunderland, U.K.), so after just three years on the market, it’s going away. Still want one? No problem—buy a Mercedes-Benz GLA, which is practically the same thing.
Jaguar F-type Manual
Jag made a big deal about offering the F-Type with a manual transmission, but it hasn’t been able to sell enough to justify its continued existence. When the updated 2020 F-Type arrives in dealerships, it’ll be automatic-only. Bummer.
Jaguar XJ
Wait, what? Yep, it’s true: After more than 50 years of continuous production, Jaguar is discontinuing the XJ, at least in the form we know it. Jag plans to relaunch the nameplate as an all-electric luxury car, which we should see debut in the next year or so.
Lincoln MKC
Technically, the MKC is being discontinued in name only, as the new version is called the Corsair. We’re looking forward to an improved version of this oft-overlooked SUV, and glad that Lincoln’s alphabet soup of names is going away.
Lincoln MKT
The MKT has been replaced by the all-new Aviator, though Lincoln will build MKTs through the end of the year so the fleet market can stock up on the MKT variant called the Town Car Livery. The Aviator is a better vehicle all around, but the funky look of Lincoln’s dragon wagon at least set it apart.
Nissan 370Z Roadster
Nissan will drop the drop-top version of the 370Z, though the coupe will soldier on. Could this be the prelude to a replacement for the aging Z? Nissan isn’t saying, but we sure hope so.
Nissan Rogue Hybrid
With automakers hustling to electrify their cars, it’s rare to see a hybrid model be discontinued. Nissan isn’t saying much, but our guess is buyers didn’t see value in the Rogue hybrid’s five-mpg bump over the conventional model. If you want a hybrid SUV, try the Toyota RAV4, new Ford Escape, or Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Smart ForTwo
Mercedes is killing off the whole Smart brand in the U.S. The ForTwo was never a match for the market, and going electric-only in 2017 didn’t help—the ForTwo ED (seriously, that’s what it’s called) cost too much and had too little range. Frankly, we’re surprised it lasted this long.
Toyota Prius C
This is another car we didn’t think would last as long as it did. The Prius C can’t match the fuel economy of the bigger and more aerodynamic Prius—not even the all-wheel-drive version. With no major updates since its 2012 introduction, we’re not surprised to see the Prius C shuffling off to the great Sierra Club meeting in the sky.
Volkswagen Beetle
What was once unthinkable is now a reality: Volkswagen is killing the Bug (again), sending it off with a rather nicely appointed Final Edition. We’re sure the impending arrival of the ID Buzz electric Microbus will give VW fanatics a lot to get excited about. Still, seeing the iconic Beetle join the ranks of other discontinued cars leaves us feeling a bit melancholy.
Volkswagen e-Golf
The Volkswagen e-Golf is a nice enough car, but with affordable EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf Plus offering 225-plus miles of range, it makes little sense. Volkswagen will replace it with the ID 3 hatchback, which, unfortunately, isn’t coming to the U.S. We’ll have to wait for the ID Crozz and ID Buzz.

Chevrolet Corvette
What’s New: The long-awaited mid-engine Corvette is finally here. After years of rumors, spy shots, leaks, and speculation, Chevrolet will finally peel the camo off this July. When it does, we expect to find a dual-overhead-cam V-8 under the rear glass with a pair of turbochargers driving the rear wheels through a manual or dual-clutch automatic transaxle. Multiple power outputs are expected courtesy of various displacements, with both 4.2-liter and 5.5-liter versions to be fitted. An all-new electrical architecture will feature top-of-the-line sensors and computers for performance and handling enhancement, but you’ll no doubt be able to turn them all off, too. Inside, Chevrolet has gone upscale with a classy, driver-focused interior featuring premium materials and a digital instrument cluster. Although base-model Corvettes will start at about $70,000, higher-performance models will quickly shoot up in price to cover both the development cost and the improvements in technology, performance, and comfort. But they should still remain relatively attainable.
What’s Not: Base cars are expected to employ Chevrolet’s tried-and-true 6.2-liter pushrod V-8. Midrange cars might also employ the supercharged pushrod engine. We predict Chevrolet will continue to offer a removable targa roof that will store in the cargo area.

Porsche Taycan
What’s New: Everything. For some time now, the highly anticipated first all-electric Porsche sedan has been caught testing, piling up about 1.2 million miles in the process. It’s looking less futuristic than its Mission E concept, but we know an 800-volt system sends power to two electric motors generating a combined 440 kW (590 hp), and that power is sent to all four wheels. Said to be quicker than 3.5 seconds to 60 mph and with more than 300 miles range, the Taycan will be available at the end of this year. Buyers will receive three years of free charging at the 484 Electrify America public stations across the country. Using DC fast charging, up 60 miles of range can be had in just four minutes or roughly 250 miles in about 15 minutes. Some reports indicate the automaker wants to introduce higher-performance variants and a Targa. We can’t wait.
What’s Not: Even EV skeptic (and longtime Porsche test driver/brand ambassador) Walter Röhrl was impressed: “It’s crazy. In all my years of rallying, I’ve never experienced such performance. The Taycan goes so well at such speed, really tremendous. If I had to drive it blindfolded, I would still know immediately that I was sitting in a Porsche.”

BMW M3
What’s New: The 2021 M3 will carry the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine as the X3M and X4M crossovers, meaning 473 hp and 442 lb-ft of output (or thereabouts, due to slightly different tuning for a sedan and crossover). That should result in 0–60 acceleration around 3.7 seconds. (Note: The current model tops out at 444 hp on the CS version.) A year or so down the line, the M3 Competition will provide in the neighborhood of 500-plus hp. The new G20 platform rides with 1.6 inches more wheelbase and has a wider track, which might prioritize corner-on-rails stability over quick-twitch handling. The M3 should allow for both RWD and AWD applications. (AWD might be defeatable to RWD if desired, as on the M5.) There is rumor of a “Pure” stripped-down base model with a stick shift (yay!) but slightly less power (sigh).
What’s Not: Some switches, controls, and knobs. It’s a new platform with upgraded engines, even a new infotainment interface.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
What’s New: The Shelby GT500 returns for the first time on the sixth-gen Mustang. Using a new engine and some aero enhancements, Ford promises this Mustang can hit 180 mph and that it won’t overheat at the track. This Shelby ought to be easier to lap, too, as it comes standard with a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic. There are no plans for a manual in 2020.
What’s Not: Although it shares its displacement with the GT350’s flat-plane-crank V-8, the Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter V-8 is a cross-plane design. Between that and the supercharger, Ford claims power and torque have increased from 526 hp and 429 lb-ft in the GT350 to more than 700 hp and 600 lb-ft in the GT500.

Cadillac CT5
What’s New: The CT5 is a new nameplate for Cadillac. This compact sedan replaces the ATS and CTS and is an evolution of Cadillac’s design language. The standard engine is the new 237-hp, 258-lb-ft 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I-4 that made its first appearance in the CT6 refresh. A modified 335-hp, 400 lb-ft 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 (smaller turbos) is available and debuts in the CT5. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. New rear badging will denote a rounded-off torque figure in Newton-meters. Super Cruise will be added in the second model year. A CT5-V is expected in the future.
What’s Not: It rides on GM’s rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform with some enhancements to the carryover front multilink strut and rear five-link suspension. All-wheel drive will be available on all trim levels.
When: Fall 2019
How Much: $48,000
Volkswagen Golf
What’s New: Volkswagen’s popular hatchback enters its eighth generation and will reportedly grow slightly in size with a few design tweaks. The sporty GTI will allegedly feature a mild hybrid powertrain featuring a 48-volt electrical system that will power the turbocharger to improve low-end boost before the exhaust pressure builds. It’s not yet clear whether the standard non-GTI Golf will return to the U.S. market.
What’s Not: The new Golf will still ride on VW’s MQB platform, though rumors suggest it’s been revised to cut weight.
When: Early 2020
How Much: $23,000 (est)
Maserati Alfieri
What’s New: The Alfieri has been designed from the ground up to be Maserati’s new halo car. It’s available as either a coupe or convertible with three levels of electrification. The EV version featuring three-motor, four-wheel drive and a quick-charging 800-volt battery will top the lineup.
What’s Not: Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Alfieri will use a Ferrari-sourced engine. If that engine is a V-8, it will probably be a version of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo currently found in the Levante GTS.
When: 2020
How Much: $150,000 (est)
Porsche 718 Boxster T/718 Cayman T
What’s New: Following the widely praised “T” prescription that was given to 911 Carrera brethren, the 718 twins will similarly enjoy reduced weight, lowered and further-honed suspension, the Sport Chrono package, and Porsche Torque Vectoring. A six-speed manual is standard; a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic is optional. The 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four 718 T (likely 300 hp, 280 lb-ft) will slot into the lineup between S and GTS versions in terms of price but surely will be the pointiest 718 available.
What’s Not: Engine output for the States has not yet been finalized, but as in the base car, it’s a 2.0-liter turbo for certain. The Cayman T coupe and Boxster T roadster body lines remain the same; only subtle interior and exterior distinctions are visible.
When: 2020

Subaru Legacy
What’s New: The Legacy moves over to Subaru’s new Global Platform, which the automaker says is safer, handles better , and maximizes interior volume. An optional 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four is now available, and the redesigned interior can be had with a large 11.6-inch touchscreen oriented vertically on the dashboard. The EyeSight package of driver assistance technology is now standard, and other driver assist features are available.
What’s Not: A 2.5-liter flat-four engine still serves as the base powertrain, but has been updated with 90 percent new parts and direct injection for the 2020 Legacy.
When: Fall 2019
How Much: $24,000 (est)
Hyundai Elantra
What’s New: After a refresh for 2019, the compact Elantra is back with more updates for 2020. The Elantra will feature a new CVT. Like its cousin, the 2019 Kia Forte, it’s likely to grow in size compared to its predecessor. Expect gains in fuel economy, with the base 2.0-liter engine hitting 41 mpg on the highway.
What’s Not: Although power figures haven’t been released, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been confirmed once again. It’s likely the model will also continue with 1.4- and 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
When: Late 2019

WHAT’S NEXT
Aston Martin Vanquish
What’s New: It’s Aston’s take on a Ferrari mid-engine supercar, specifically at the new F8 Tributo revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March. If it looks anything like the concept and revives the Vanquish name, we’ll be extremely happy. The Vanquish could pack the new V-6 hybrid turbo behind the seats, possibly making north of 700 hp to compete directly with the Tributo. We’ve heard the new model is being developed with the help of Red Bull Racing engineers, so expect the car to have a lot of F1 bits and pieces.
What’s Not: Its name. The name Vanquish has come and gone a couple of times—it was first used from 2001 to 2007 and then again from 2012 to 2018. Aston built a few special editions, but this new supercar will be completely different from anything we’ve seen with the Vanquish badge.
When: 2020
How Much: $350,000 (est)
Alfa Romeo GTV
What’s New: As Alfa’s practical coupe, the GTV will have four seats and a trunk, but that’s where the practicality ends. The front-engine, rear-drive 2+2 is expected to be offered only with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive will be optional. The high-performance Quadrifoglio model will add an electric motor between the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 and the transmission to boost output to more than 600 hp.
What’s Not: At its core, the GTV is a Giulia coupe. Expect the same turbocharged four-cylinder base engine.
When: 2021

Audi E-Tron GT
What’s New: Audi’s sexy E-Tron GT sedan will follow the more practical E-Tron SUV to market just a year later but with substantial differences. Electric motors front and rear combine for 590 hp, fed by a 95-kW-hr battery pack with an 800-volt charging system capable of nearly filling the battery in 20 minutes. Range is expected to be similar to the E-Tron SUV’s 204 EPA-estimated miles—but less if you test the estimated 0–60 time of under 3.5 seconds or explore the 149-mph top speed.
What’s Not: Squint a bit, and you can tell it’s a nicely rebodied Porsche Taycan.

Fiat Centoventi
What’s New: The entire fully modular cheap-EV concept. An underfloor battery rack can carry up to four individual 60-mile battery packs, which can be rented when needed. A fifth optional pack slides out from under the driver’s seat for convenient indoor charging. Body panels are molded in a single color with wraps providing other colors. Further personalization is provided by five choices each of roof styles and colors, bumpers, and wheels.
What’s Not: Fiat’s lifelong mission to bring mobility to the masses, which here drives further innovations like 3-D-printable accessories that mount to a mesh grid of holes in the dash.
When: 2022

Acura RLX
What’s New: Is bolder better? Acura has tried to answer that question over the years, with mixed results. Love it or hate it, the new RDX benefits from engaging styling borrowed from the Precision concept—and that bold crossover is setting sales records for the brand. That momentum could continue with the RLX’s replacement, a car that may adopt the Precision’s fastback shape (hello, Audi A7). With very little brand equity in the RL or RLX name, the time could be right for a (slightly) bolder flagship four-door from Acura.
What’s Not: Future Acura cabins will be influenced by the Precision Interior concept, like the RDX with its optimally placed infotainment screen and controversial touchpad controller.

Karma Pininfarina GT Concept
What’s New: The Pininfarina-designed Karma concept car made its debut at the 2019 Shanghai auto show and previews the California-based automaker’s upcoming lineup. Its design language will be a departure from the Revero, but most of the fundamental engineering is unchanged. If public response goes well, the Pininfarina GT could go from one-off concept to production model.
What’s Not: Karma recently announced a partnership with BMW and will license the German automaker’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine for use as a generator in plug-in hybrid vehicles, including the next-generation Revero.

Motor News: 2019 New York International Auto Show
It’s Spring and the 2019 New York International Auto show was in full bloom. The fourth generation Toyota Highlander 3-row crossover arrived with more dynamic styling. It rides on a new platform with V6 and revamped hybrid powertrains. New too, the Toyota Yaris becomes a more useful 5-door.
New York is the first public showing for the redesigned Ford Escape. Looking more civilized, power includes the first I3 with cylinder deactivation, and a hybrid.
Much more dynamic is its stable mate the new Lincoln Corsair. Replacing the MKC, while compact, it includes most of the interior refinement of the full-size Navigator.
Speaking of big SUV’s, Volkswagen’s Atlas Base Camp Concept looks ready for any wilderness walkabout.
They’ll only be 1,948 “production” Porsche 911 Speedsters. This latest open top icon sports 502-horsepower from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six.
The all-new Subaru Outback combines ruggedness, a more premium interior, and a new global platform. A turbo flat-4 returns, replacing last year’s optional six.
The all-new Hyundai Venue will be the brand’s smallest crossover. It’s upright shape and simple interior deliver a little “Bronco-style” vibe.
New York’s best-looking new car was the eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata. Its “Sensuous Sportiness” design could breathe new life into mid-size sedans.
Meanwhile, Dodge paid tribute to U.S. armed forces with Stars & Stripes Editions of the Challenger and Charger.
New York City has a Lux factor all its own, and auto makers exhibited plenty of prestige.
Alfa Romeo displayed Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio NRING limited editions, recognizing the brand’s performance at the world-renowned Nürburgring.
Cadillac brought the new CT5 luxury-sport sedan, replacing both the ATS and CTS.
An updated Jaguar XE sedan made its New York debut as well.
Just like the NSX supercar, the very limited run Acura TLX and MDX PMC Editions will be hand assembled at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.
Mercedes-Benz made multiple global debuts at New York. The all-new GLS three-row utility arrives with top drawer luxury, the latest MBUX personal assistant, and new mirror folding “car wash” mode.
Other world debuts included an updated Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe…
Along with the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4MATIC+ in both SUV and Coupe forms…its 302 AMG horsepower for the CLA…and A-class four-doors.
And the limited edition Mercedes-Benz EQC Edition 1886 to mark the EV sub-brand’s first SUV.
A new EV contender is the Qiantu K50 by Mullen. This electric sports car looks production ready with 402-horsepower and 230-mile range.
The all-electric two-passenger Genesis Mint Concept is specifically designed for cities just like New York.
Kia spiced things up with the HabaNiro concept, an all-electric, autonomous, 4-seater with butterfly-wing doors.
While the Korean brand hopes to entice more driving enthusiasts with the Stinger GTS.
Audi celebrated ten years of its R8 V-10 supercar with a host of 20-20 updates.
The 2020 Nissan 370Z, and GT-R 50th Anniversary Editions celebrate a half a century since the Datsun 240Z made its U.S. debut in New York.
While the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO will be their most powerful production GT-R ever.
For tame drivers it’s the longer, lower, and wider third-gen Nissan Versa.
The Mazda CX-5 will finally be available here with a Skyactiv-D diesel option.
While GMC’s three-row Acadia arrived with added high tech and a new turbo engine.

2020 Cadillac CT5-V First Look: Injecting More Affordable Power
You can kill a sedan, or you can choose to play in the car game and up the ante with more performance. Introducing the 2020 Cadillac CT5-V with 355 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque under the hood courtesy of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. And an even more powerful, track-capable CT5-V is still to come. Gentlemen, start your engines.
This is the high-octane version of the all-new 2020 CT5 sedan that was shown earlier this year, filling the vacancy where the ATS and CTS resided. The CT5 is shorter than the CTS but has a longer wheelbase and continues to use GM’s Alpha rear-drive architecture, though the new sedan rides on a next-generation version of the platform. The CT5-V makes its debut alongside the smaller but still punchy CT4-V.
The regular CT5 goes on sale this fall; the CT5-V will follow in early 2020, and after a short model year, the 2021 model will be introduced with Super Cruise, Cadillac’s hands-free highway driving technology. The CT5-V will take on the BMW 3 Series (including performance versions), the Audi S4, and Mercedes-AMG C 43.
The CT5-V comes standard in rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available. The sedan still has a front multi-link strut and five-link rear suspension, but it has been enhanced, and on the CT5-V the latest version of Magnetic Ride Control (version 4.0) is standard.
To distribute power in the CT5-V, the V-6 comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. No manual transmission—at least for now, GM President Mark Reuss says with a smile.
That is, in part, because there is a higher-level, track-capable version of the CT5-V still to come. No details yet, but more will be shared soon, Reuss says. This will be a V-Series strategy going forward; an affordable V that is $6,000–$7,000 more than a Sport model, then a top-level V for those who want ultimate performance. The first two vehicles to adopt this strategy are the CT5-V and CT4-V. The CT6-V has only one level, but it is a doozy with the new 550-hp, 627-lb-ft Blackwing V-8 engine.
“Performance isn’t going to go out of style,” Reuss says. Once Cadillac made the decision to stay in sedans, it knew it couldn’t do it half way.
The regular CT5 base engine is the 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I-4 that made its debut in the 2019 CT6 refresh, and it gives the sedan 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. An optional 335-hp, 400-lb-ft 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 is similar to the CT5-V’s engine but with smaller turbos. Both engines have active fuel management that shuts down cylinders when they aren’t needed. And each is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing CTS-V has a 640-hp, 630-lb-ft 6.2-liter supercharged V-8.
The CT5-V looks the part with a long hood and dash-to-axle proportions of a rear-drive sedan, wheels pushed to the corners, a lower beltline, and a fastback profile. It comes with unique 19-inch wheels with summer run-flat performance tires standard. The regular sedan has 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels with run-flat, self-sealing tires offered. No spoiler or ventilated hood, but who knows what the track version will have? There are Brembo front brakes, a performance traction management system with five drive modes, and launch control.
The CT5 is content as a sedan only; no coupe or wagon is planned at this time. It will be assembled at the Lansing Grand River plant.
Cadillac introduced the V-Series in 2004 with the CTS-V, and over the years the family has included V variants of the STS, XLR, ATS, and CT6.
