Hybrid versions of the RX come standard with all-wheel drive, but this example is also fitted with the F Sport package, which includes dress-up items like a unique grille, aluminum pedal covers, 20-inch wheels and even performance dampers. The good news is this upgrade costs just $685 and includes special body-side graphics, a black grille surround and a Halliburton Edge lightweight two-piece luggage set. The bad news is the Black Line Special Edition package is limited to just 750 gas-powered RXs and 250 hybrid models.
The Lexus RX’s styling is certainly aggressive, with its comically large grille, angular headlamps and chiseled surfacing, but its interior is much more restrained and pleasant. The cabin’s quality is stellar and its materials are generally very good. The headliner and roof pillars are wrapped in a flannel-like fabric, soft plastics are used liberally throughout and nearly all the switches and knobs feel slickly lubricated. Sure, you’ll find a smattering of Toyota-sourced buttons here and there; stuff you get in, say, a Camry, but these carryover controls are well hidden and hardly objectionable.
Just behind this Lexus’ unusually deep dashboard, the front bucket chairs are all-day comfortable and attractive, rendered in black and white with contrasting blue stitching, a combo that’s also part of the Black Line Special Edition package. Storage space up front is good, consisting of a decently sized bin under the center armrest, a few other small cubbies on the console and generously proportioned front door pockets that pop outward when you pull on them. Moving rearward, the RX’s backseat is nearly sprawl-out spacious, with plenty of legroom and a decent amount of noggin space. Comfortable cushions provide great support, with the lower one being a nice distance above the floor for a chair-like seating position. Providing easy access, this Lexus’ rear doors open nice and wide.
But now for some bad news. If there’s a worse infotainment system than what’s offered in this Lexus, I’m not aware of it. With a bewildering user interface as well as a clunky and difficult-to-use control pad on the console, this multimedia system is half laptop, half low-end Android tablet and all kinds of terrible. Not only is the menu structure confusing, the track pad you use to navigate through it is kludgy, making even simple tasks a distracting chore. Rubbing salt in the wound, this RX 450h is also fitted with the top-shelf 12.3-inch screen (an 8-incher is standard), which is bundled in a $3,365 options package, so you’re paying thousands more for an awful experience. At least that outlay also gets you embedded navigation and a superb Mark Levinson sound system that makes even highly compressed MP3s and muddy satellite radio come alive. While a bit of a reach, the RX’s infotainment screen is touch-enabled, so you can skip the trackpad, but only if your arms are lanky enough. Thankfully, this system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (as well as Amazon Alexa), so you don’t have to use the infotainment system any longer than it takes to plug your phone in. The vehicle’s six USB ports ensure everyone’s mobile devices are fully juiced; a wireless charging pad is also available.
The RX’s interior is extremely well built and refined, though its infotainment tech leaves much to be desired.

Despite its smooth ride, the RX 450h’s body is decently controlled. Sure, it could feel a bit tighter in corners and it might be nice if the steering were quicker and heftier, but the whole chassis feels so well balanced that these changes aren’t necessary, plus they might ruin the fluffy ride, which would be a shame.

Performance, while not awe-inspiring, is still very good, the engine sounding like it’s operating far off in the distance rather than a few inches ahead of your toes. The hybrid parts of this drivetrain are similarly polished, barely drawing any attention to themselves. The brake pedal is also friendly, with a seamless transition between regenerative and friction braking. For added versatility, the RX 450h offers an EV mode, which allows you to run it solely on electrons. The onboard battery pack has enough juice for you to sneak down a cul-du-sac or into the garage without running the engine, but as soon as you go too fast or prod the throttle too aggressively the engine fires up. Remember, this is not a plug-in hybrid, so electric-only range is not the primary focus.

Test Drive: Why the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition Is Worth a Look
Don’t dismiss the sleeper sports sedan with all-wheel drive and an NSX paint job.
DETROIT--A quick recap of the car I've recently test-driven for this review: Shortly before Acura unveiled its enticing 2021 TLX sedan, Honda's premium/sport marque assembled 360 examples of the outgoing model at its Performance Manufacturing Center, which normally hand-builds the NSX hybrid supercar. The 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition is painted Valencia red pearl previously limited to the NSX, with a nano-pigment technology that "produces exceptionally high color saturation and deep levels of contrast." Shortly after Acura's PMC completed its run of TLXs earlier this year, it assembled 330 MDX SUVs in the same paint color.
The bottom line on the 2021 Acura TLX PMC Edition's window sticker is just shy of $50,000, which might seem a bit excessive for a marque that is in the process of emphasizing its performance image over its long-struggling premium/luxury image. As for the NSX Valencia red pearl paint, though, it looks flawless to these eyes. What's more, that bottom line for the PMC is just $2,600 more expensive than a 2020 Acura TLX SH-AWD with Advance package, painted, say, Performance Red Pearl. However, with the new model on the way, you're likely to find bigger price breaks on the car assembled at the automated factory than in the NSX sector.
What really makes the TLX special and worth the money is its combination of Acura's super-handling all-wheel drive--Honda's variation on torque-vectoring--and its excellent steering precision, feedback, and weight. Steering historically has not been Acura's strong suit, though the NSX has always been an exception, and chassis engineers have done a good job of extending this quality to the rest of the lineup. All-wheel drive historically has not been my favorite method of bringing a transverse-engine, front-drive-based car up to longitudinal-engine, rear-drive sports-sedan handling levels, but SH-AWD has proved to be a credible alternative.
SH-AWD makes sure the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition like the one featured in this test drive handles quick curves with a neutral attitude, though you can feel the impending understeer until you lift the throttle mid-turn and the nose comes back to you.
The naturally aspirated, 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 that comes with all SH-AWD TLX models (a 2.4-liter, 206-hp I-4 is standard on FWD models, with the V-6 optional), works nicely in concert with this chassis. The launch is not overly torquey, but this engine offers a fat mid-range which enhanced by unusually useful manual-shift paddle controls for gearing up and down the automatic's nine speeds. This makes for a sport sedan that exceeds its reach, perhaps not as an alternative to the Genesis G70, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, or Cadillac CT4-V, but certainly to the Audi S4, for example.
In Acura's marketing move to emphasize its performance creds, the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition marks a nice gap between commodity brands like Honda and the expensive, overtly premium luxury brands. The TLX is an overachieving sports sedan for enthusiasts who don't want to pay premium prices for luxury badges. For an extra $2,600, the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition is absolutely a worthy garagemate for people lucky enough to own an NSX.

This 2020 RX 450h Is The Best RX You Can Buy
The driving experience of your modern SUV owes a great deal to the Lexus RX. When it took home our inaugural SUV of the Year in 1999, we praised the RX for not compromising on ride quality, fuel economy, and handling the way most other SUVs did for the benefit of occasional off-roading. The success of the RX is part of the reason your crossover doesn’t drive like a shrunken pickup.
It’s been a sales leader for Lexus for the last two decades, and we can definitively say the 2020 RX 450h is the best of this bunch. Not the gas V-6 model, not the three-row RX L, definitely not the flashy and expensive F Sport or F Sport Performance variants; the hybrid. That’s not to say it’s a car without flaws—it most certainly is not—but rather that it’s a midsize luxury SUV worth your attention. Let’s dive in, shall we?
RX 450h Engine and Fuel Economy
For the RX 450h, Lexus takes the 3.5-liter V-6 from the RX 350 and augments it with three electric motors: a starter-generator that also controls transmission ratios; a 165-hp front drive motor; and a 67-hp rear drive motor. Peak system output sums to 308 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. That gives the hybrid more power but less twist than the standard RX. When we drove both cars back to back in Costa Rica last year, the hybrid was noticeably more energetic.
The hybrid also swaps the RX 350’s eight-speed automatic for an e-CVT that chooses the optimal transmission ratio of gas and electric power input for the amount of propulsion requested by your right foot. All hybridized RX models feature standard AWD. As you would expect, all the electric motors and variable ratios result in a significant fuel economy advantage.
The RX 450h is EPA-rated for 31/28 mpg city/highway. Those numbers are up from 19/26 mpg in an AWD RX 350, and they exceed the slightly more powerful Acura MDX Sport Hybrid’s 26/27 mpg by some margin.
Even with the extra equipment and consequent fuel economy advantage, the hybrid model commands just a $1,250 premium over a comparable RX 350. That’s a 2.6 percent price jump in exchange for a 36 percent gain in efficiency. For a little context, Acura charges an extra $1,500 to upgrade to MDX Sport Hybrid from a comparable gas MDX, but it requires that you spec the $5,000 Technology package and only offers 23 percent fuel economy gains. Although the hybrid Acura and Lexus are similarly priced when similarly equipped, the Lexus has a lower starting point by over $5,000.
Infotainment
This fourth-generation RX was introduced for the 2016 model year, and it receives a mid-cycle update for 2020 with significant changes to the infotainment system. Both the standard 8.0-inch and optional 12.3-inch infotainment displays gain touchscreen functionality, and all RXs now include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.
The laptop-like touchpad we’ve aimed not-so-nice words at in the past is still a flawed interface. I was always able to eventually highlight the intended section of the screen, but the touchpad is imprecise; identical inputs didn’t always generate the same output. Haptic feedback that vibrates through the touchpad with each new selection improves the situation slightly, but I’d still prefer a rotary dial.
Our complaints would be mitigated if the new touchscreen was a pleasure to use. It is not. I have no complaints about its response times or fingerprint accumulation or touch detection.
Problem is, the cabin ergonomics just weren’t designed for a touchscreen, and as a result, it’s just out of comfortable reach from the driver’s seat, even with this 6-foot-1-inch editor’s lanky arms.
I do, however, have great appreciation for the buttons and knobs in the center stack. There’s nothing exceptional about the hardware itself—other than the lusciously weighted volume knob that might be my favorite aspect of the vehicle—but rather, their presence in the first place.
Even the least technologically literate driver or passenger will have no problem adjusting the temperature, changing the radio station, or activating their (optional) heated and cooled seats. That’s not something that can necessarily be said for screen-heavy interior design from automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and especially Tesla. I’ll also take this opportunity to express my fondness for the handsome analog clock.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are a sizable step forward from a user interface standpoint. There’s nothing heinous about the Lexus systems for media or maps, other than looking about a decade old. With music and navigation running through a familiar app on your phone, the system is effectively future-proofed.
But what about actually piloting the RX 450h along its navigation software’s low-res pixelated roads?
Driving the RX 450h
This is a car that’s shockingly easy to accelerate smoothly. It feels as if the first third of the throttle pedal’s travel only opens the throttle about 10 percent. I found it nearly impossible to pull away from a stop without a level of grace.
That ethos carries over to the rest of the RX’s inputs. The brakes have an initial softness that makes them exceptionally easy to modulate. The responsive CVT consistently delivers the right ratio for the engine to deliver the level of power needed. The steering is slow and light, and there’s not much feedback, but the RX is effortlessly placeable. After 10 minutes behind the wheel of the RX, you’ll be driving like a Rolls-Royce chauffeur school alumnus.
I had been firmly in camp “CVT bad, real transmission always better,” but this RX has me reconsidering my loyalties. Sure, it has the engine moaning at constant rpm like an overstressed generator when you’re accelerating, but most of the time it keeps the engine humming quietly along around 1,000 rpm, ready for you when you need it. When you do need it, the engine and electric motors provide ample power for accelerating from a short on-ramp or passing cars on the highway. It’s a superior unit to the RX 350’s reluctant eight-speed auto.
There were plenty of instances in my time with the RX that I was able to forget this car even has an engine. It begs the question, why bother with the V-6? The RX seems like a natural candidate for the Toyota RAV4 Prime’s 302-hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain. If the current engine isn’t adding to the experience, why not replace it with a more efficient plug-in hybrid four with similar power and usable electric range?
The suspension delivers a comfortable and yes, smooth, ride. It’s one of the better cars I’ve experienced on I-405’s broken road surface in that regard. There’s little body roll and decent control over body movements, but the RX without question prioritizes the softer, more comfort-oriented side of the ride-handling balance. The tires will audibly protest lateral forces earlier than some, but only when I was driving more aggressively than I expect most owners to drive a car like this.
Housekeeping
Let’s see, what did I forget? There’s plenty of room in the back seat for me to sit behind my own seating position. Room for three, too, thanks to the lack of a drive-shaft tunnel that would create a sizable hump where the center passenger’s feet would live. The optional head-up display is not sufficiently bright to contend with southern California sun. There are six USB charging ports. If you close the door with the window down, you’ll hear a hollow thwonk that I’d criticize for sounding too cheap on a $20,000 car.
But more than anything, the driving experience of the RX, and specifically the RX 450h, is the polar opposite of truck-like. After more than 20 years and countless competitors, it still delivers a comfort-first drive matched only by certain luxury sedans and air-suspended SUVs that eclipse its relatively modest price point.
It’s the best value in its segment, posts the best fuel economy numbers of the group, and has been a pleasure to live with. Shortly stated, it’s the best RX yet.
