2021 Lexus RX 450h is a comfy crossover with troublesome tech
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The expressively styled Lexus RX is smooth and coddling.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The 2021 Lexus RX 450h F Sport hybrid crossover is sinuous, frugal and impressively quiet — exactly what I want in a luxury vehicle. There is, however, one aspect of this Lexus that’s unforgivable, a mortal sin that drags down an otherwise pleasant vehicle: the infotainment system.
Like
Stellar Mark Levinson sound system
Spacious and comfortable backseat
Exemplary refinement
Don’t Like
Loathsome infotainment system
Too-aggressive exterior styling
Meh real-world fuel economy
Hybrid versions of the RX come standard with all-wheel drive, but this example is also fitted with the F Sport package, which includes dress-up items like a unique grille, aluminum pedal covers, 20-inch wheels and even performance dampers. For extra sportiness, a $970 handling package is also offered, bringing an adaptive suspension system, retuned power steering and more goodies to the table. Beyond those F Sport upgrades, my tester features the Black Line Special Edition package. The good news is this upgrade costs just $685 and includes special body-side graphics, a black grille surround and a Halliburton Edge lightweight two-piece luggage set. The bad news is the Black Line Special Edition package is limited to just 750 gas-powered RXs and 250 hybrid models.
The Lexus RX’s styling is certainly aggressive, with its comically large grille, angular headlamps and chiseled surfacing, but its interior is much more restrained and pleasant. The cabin’s quality is stellar and its materials are generally very good. The headliner and roof pillars are wrapped in a flannel-like fabric, soft plastics are used liberally throughout and nearly all the switches and knobs feel slickly lubricated. Sure, you’ll find a smattering of Toyota-sourced buttons here and there; stuff you get in, say, a Camry, but these carryover controls are well hidden and hardly objectionable.
Just behind this Lexus’ unusually deep dashboard, the front bucket chairs are all-day comfortable and attractive, rendered in black and white with contrasting blue stitching, a combo that’s also part of the Black Line Special Edition package. Storage space up front is good, consisting of a decently sized bin under the center armrest, a few other small cubbies on the console and generously proportioned front door pockets that pop outward when you pull on them. Moving rearward, the RX’s backseat is nearly sprawl-out spacious, with plenty of legroom and a decent amount of noggin space. Comfortable cushions provide great support, with the lower one being a nice distance above the floor for a chair-like seating position. Providing easy access, this Lexus’ rear doors open nice and wide.
But now for some bad news. If there’s a worse infotainment system than what’s offered in this Lexus, I’m not aware of it. With a bewildering user interface as well as a clunky and difficult-to-use control pad on the console, this multimedia system is half laptop, half low-end Android tablet and all kinds of terrible. Not only is the menu structure confusing, the track pad you use to navigate through it is kludgy, making even simple tasks a distracting chore. Rubbing salt in the wound, this RX 450h is also fitted with the top-shelf 12.3-inch screen (an 8-incher is standard), which is bundled in a $3,365 options package, so you’re paying thousands more for an awful experience. At least that outlay also gets you embedded navigation and a superb Mark Levinson sound system that makes even highly compressed MP3s and muddy satellite radio come alive. While a bit of a reach, the RX’s infotainment screen is touch-enabled, so you can skip the trackpad, but only if your arms are lanky enough. Thankfully, this system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (as well as Amazon Alexa), so you don’t have to use the infotainment system any longer than it takes to plug your phone in. The vehicle’s six USB ports ensure everyone’s mobile devices are fully juiced; a wireless charging pad is also available.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The RX’s interior is extremely well built and refined, though its infotainment tech leaves much to be desired.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The Lexus RX was updated in 2020, gaining a stiffened structure and revised suspension for better handling. This year, the vehicle gains some new technology, including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, both of which are now standard across the range. Auto-dimming, power-folding mirrors are included at no extra charge, too, as is Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0, a suite of driver aids that includes daytime cyclist detection, low-light pedestrian detection, road sign recognition and lane-keeping assist. Thankfully, I have not had an opportunity to test the pedestrian-detecting systems, but the lane-keeping aid is gentle yet quite effective.
Underway, the RX 450h is one smooth operator. Whether you’re traversing frost-heaved highways, tiptoeing along a cratered dirt road or just cruising around your subdivision, this Lexus’ ride is always sinuous. Even rolling on 20-inch wheels, small expansion joints barely register and larger impacts are easily deflected, all with no harshness or gritty vibration percolating through to the passenger compartment. Despite its smooth ride, the RX 450h’s body is decently controlled. Sure, it could feel a bit tighter in corners and it might be nice if the steering were quicker and heftier, but the whole chassis feels so well balanced that these changes aren’t necessary, plus they might ruin the fluffy ride, which would be a shame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Refined, punchy and economical, there’s little to complain about regarding the RX 450h’s powertrain.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Matching its over-the-road refinement, the RX’s cabin remains incredibly silent, quieter than naptime in a nursing home, with almost no wind, tire or engine noise being heard. The RX 450h’s hybrid powertrain is built around a 3.5-liter V6, one augmented by two electric motor-generators up front that form a continuously variable transmission, and a separate motor at the rear, which provides all-wheel drive. Whispering while it works, this arrangement provides a net 308 horsepower, though a torque figure is not listed because the math with hybrids is weird. On its own, however, the V6 engine whips up 247 pound-feet of twist. The RX 450h’s easy handling and all-wheel drive add immensely to my confidence one day as the weather goes from drab to dangerous, with a winter storm dumping sleet on the roadways.
Stand on the accelerator and this Lexus scoots. Performance, while not awe-inspiring, is still very good, the engine sounding like it’s operating far off in the distance rather than a few inches ahead of your toes. The hybrid parts of this drivetrain are similarly polished, barely drawing any attention to themselves. The brake pedal is also friendly, with a seamless transition between regenerative and friction braking. For added versatility, the RX 450h offers an EV mode, which allows you to run it solely on electrons. The onboard battery pack has enough juice for you to sneak down a cul-du-sac or into the garage without running the engine, but as soon as you go too fast or prod the throttle too aggressively the engine fires up. Remember, this is not a plug-in hybrid, so electric-only range is not the primary focus.
Cutting fuel consumption, however, is one of this Lexus’ main objectives. Expect 31 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on highway drives. In mixed use, the RX 450h should return 30 mpg, however, in the real world I only average around 25.1, a disappointing score. It’s typically a breeze to meet or even exceed advertised fuel-economy scores in Toyota hybrids, which makes this performance (or lack thereof) a bit of a surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lexus RX is something of a mixed bag.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
With its upscale interior, refined manners and, yes, unfortunate infotainment tech, a base 2021 Lexus RX 450h starts at just shy of $49,000, including $1,025 in destination fees. That’s about $2,650 more than an entry-level, front-wheel-drive, non-hybrid RX 350. As it sits, this F Sport example checks out for $59,380, a figure goosed by a few add-ons like a $200 wireless charger, $640 heated and ventilated front seats, $1,365 for parking assist and a 360-degree camera system, plus a few additional goodies. Still, that outlay gets you a family-friendly vehicle that’s more docile and refined than the sportier Acura MDX and, thanks to its aggressive styling (which you may or may not love), more visually interesting than a Lincoln Nautilus or Mercedes-Benz GLC.
There’s an abundance of luxury crossovers available today, great examples from German, American and Asian automakers. Plenty of them offer upscale interiors and loads of fancy features, but few are as refined, fuel efficient — and in one particular way — frustrating as this mostly likable Lexus.

This 2020 RX 450h Is The Best RX You Can Buy
The driving experience of your modern SUV owes a great deal to the Lexus RX. When it took home our inaugural SUV of the Year in 1999, we praised the RX for not compromising on ride quality, fuel economy, and handling the way most other SUVs did for the benefit of occasional off-roading. The success of the RX is part of the reason your crossover doesn’t drive like a shrunken pickup.
It’s been a sales leader for Lexus for the last two decades, and we can definitively say the 2020 RX 450h is the best of this bunch. Not the gas V-6 model, not the three-row RX L, definitely not the flashy and expensive F Sport or F Sport Performance variants; the hybrid. That’s not to say it’s a car without flaws—it most certainly is not—but rather that it’s a midsize luxury SUV worth your attention. Let’s dive in, shall we?
RX 450h Engine and Fuel Economy
For the RX 450h, Lexus takes the 3.5-liter V-6 from the RX 350 and augments it with three electric motors: a starter-generator that also controls transmission ratios; a 165-hp front drive motor; and a 67-hp rear drive motor. Peak system output sums to 308 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. That gives the hybrid more power but less twist than the standard RX. When we drove both cars back to back in Costa Rica last year, the hybrid was noticeably more energetic.
The hybrid also swaps the RX 350’s eight-speed automatic for an e-CVT that chooses the optimal transmission ratio of gas and electric power input for the amount of propulsion requested by your right foot. All hybridized RX models feature standard AWD. As you would expect, all the electric motors and variable ratios result in a significant fuel economy advantage.
The RX 450h is EPA-rated for 31/28 mpg city/highway. Those numbers are up from 19/26 mpg in an AWD RX 350, and they exceed the slightly more powerful Acura MDX Sport Hybrid’s 26/27 mpg by some margin.
Even with the extra equipment and consequent fuel economy advantage, the hybrid model commands just a $1,250 premium over a comparable RX 350. That’s a 2.6 percent price jump in exchange for a 36 percent gain in efficiency. For a little context, Acura charges an extra $1,500 to upgrade to MDX Sport Hybrid from a comparable gas MDX, but it requires that you spec the $5,000 Technology package and only offers 23 percent fuel economy gains. Although the hybrid Acura and Lexus are similarly priced when similarly equipped, the Lexus has a lower starting point by over $5,000.
Infotainment
This fourth-generation RX was introduced for the 2016 model year, and it receives a mid-cycle update for 2020 with significant changes to the infotainment system. Both the standard 8.0-inch and optional 12.3-inch infotainment displays gain touchscreen functionality, and all RXs now include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.
The laptop-like touchpad we’ve aimed not-so-nice words at in the past is still a flawed interface. I was always able to eventually highlight the intended section of the screen, but the touchpad is imprecise; identical inputs didn’t always generate the same output. Haptic feedback that vibrates through the touchpad with each new selection improves the situation slightly, but I’d still prefer a rotary dial.
Our complaints would be mitigated if the new touchscreen was a pleasure to use. It is not. I have no complaints about its response times or fingerprint accumulation or touch detection.
Problem is, the cabin ergonomics just weren’t designed for a touchscreen, and as a result, it’s just out of comfortable reach from the driver’s seat, even with this 6-foot-1-inch editor’s lanky arms.
I do, however, have great appreciation for the buttons and knobs in the center stack. There’s nothing exceptional about the hardware itself—other than the lusciously weighted volume knob that might be my favorite aspect of the vehicle—but rather, their presence in the first place.
Even the least technologically literate driver or passenger will have no problem adjusting the temperature, changing the radio station, or activating their (optional) heated and cooled seats. That’s not something that can necessarily be said for screen-heavy interior design from automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and especially Tesla. I’ll also take this opportunity to express my fondness for the handsome analog clock.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are a sizable step forward from a user interface standpoint. There’s nothing heinous about the Lexus systems for media or maps, other than looking about a decade old. With music and navigation running through a familiar app on your phone, the system is effectively future-proofed.
But what about actually piloting the RX 450h along its navigation software’s low-res pixelated roads?
Driving the RX 450h
This is a car that’s shockingly easy to accelerate smoothly. It feels as if the first third of the throttle pedal’s travel only opens the throttle about 10 percent. I found it nearly impossible to pull away from a stop without a level of grace.
That ethos carries over to the rest of the RX’s inputs. The brakes have an initial softness that makes them exceptionally easy to modulate. The responsive CVT consistently delivers the right ratio for the engine to deliver the level of power needed. The steering is slow and light, and there’s not much feedback, but the RX is effortlessly placeable. After 10 minutes behind the wheel of the RX, you’ll be driving like a Rolls-Royce chauffeur school alumnus.
I had been firmly in camp “CVT bad, real transmission always better,” but this RX has me reconsidering my loyalties. Sure, it has the engine moaning at constant rpm like an overstressed generator when you’re accelerating, but most of the time it keeps the engine humming quietly along around 1,000 rpm, ready for you when you need it. When you do need it, the engine and electric motors provide ample power for accelerating from a short on-ramp or passing cars on the highway. It’s a superior unit to the RX 350’s reluctant eight-speed auto.
There were plenty of instances in my time with the RX that I was able to forget this car even has an engine. It begs the question, why bother with the V-6? The RX seems like a natural candidate for the Toyota RAV4 Prime’s 302-hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain. If the current engine isn’t adding to the experience, why not replace it with a more efficient plug-in hybrid four with similar power and usable electric range?
The suspension delivers a comfortable and yes, smooth, ride. It’s one of the better cars I’ve experienced on I-405’s broken road surface in that regard. There’s little body roll and decent control over body movements, but the RX without question prioritizes the softer, more comfort-oriented side of the ride-handling balance. The tires will audibly protest lateral forces earlier than some, but only when I was driving more aggressively than I expect most owners to drive a car like this.
Housekeeping
Let’s see, what did I forget? There’s plenty of room in the back seat for me to sit behind my own seating position. Room for three, too, thanks to the lack of a drive-shaft tunnel that would create a sizable hump where the center passenger’s feet would live. The optional head-up display is not sufficiently bright to contend with southern California sun. There are six USB charging ports. If you close the door with the window down, you’ll hear a hollow thwonk that I’d criticize for sounding too cheap on a $20,000 car.
But more than anything, the driving experience of the RX, and specifically the RX 450h, is the polar opposite of truck-like. After more than 20 years and countless competitors, it still delivers a comfort-first drive matched only by certain luxury sedans and air-suspended SUVs that eclipse its relatively modest price point.
It’s the best value in its segment, posts the best fuel economy numbers of the group, and has been a pleasure to live with. Shortly stated, it’s the best RX yet.

VIP’s Top 5 Rated 3rd Row Mid-Range SUV Countdown
For your benefit, we at VIP Auto have created a short review of the best mid-range 3rd row SUVs.
Acura MDX
The 2020 Acura MDX is one of the top choices for the mid-size, mid-range SUV.  With having 3 rows the last row might not be the best fit for an adult, but the first 2 rows should be more than enough. High quality leather and heated seats provide a comfortable experience for all 7 passengers. With a 5 star safety rating it is as safe as they come and the 290 HP engine is more than enough to get the car up and going.
  Lexus GX460
The 2020 Lexus GX 460 is one of the most reliable 3 row SUVs on the market today. It comfortably seats 7 and the interior has a beautiful wood grain trim throughout the vehicle. Its 301 HP engine mixed with its 4WD gives it plenty of juice for standard city drivers and the adventurous off road type. It has fantastic safety features including the Lexus Safety System that monitors side, front and rear alerts along with all the blind spots.
  GMC Yukon
The large 2020 GMC Yukon can potentially fit 8 people throughout its 3 rows. The base models start with a 355 HP engine that powers the vehicle with a 4WD or RWD option. The second and third-row both have options to be folded down making the cargo space increase from 15 cubic feet up to above 90. It has all modern technology and safety features including remote start, sunroof, and tri-zone climate control.
  Chevy Tahoe
The 2020 Chevy Tahoe is a second on this list that has incredible reliability ratings. Depending on the trim the Tahoe can seat either 8 or even 9 passengers with the first two rows comfortably fitting any adult. It has just over 15 cubic feet cargo space behind the third row and when folded it increases to about 50. The infotainment is led by the 8 in touch screen and is easy to use, with the clear sound it can be linked to any phone, plus USB charging. It is powered by a V8 5.3-liter engine that gives it plenty of acceleration and pick up.
  Cadillac XT6
The brand new 2020 Cadillac XT6 was just released this last year. It is the largest in the XT series and also the most luxurious. It is noted for its secure interior that nearly eliminates any outside road noise. It can seat 7 passengers and has some of the best cargo space in its class. Although not the fastest SUV on the road the 310 HP engines give plenty of power for any highway and city use. Also, the engine allows it to tow up to 4k pounds making it very versatile. The MPG is average for its size at around 18 mpg, but the driving experience is one of the most enjoyable features.
All those from the NYC area are welcome to stop by the local office or browse online for free quotes. From start to finish you can lease your favorite mid-range 3 row SUV online with VIP.

Large Hybrid SUVs for 2020: Which Have the Best Fuel Economy?
If you need a vehicle that offers a balance of good fuel economy and ample interior space, the big hybrid SUVs on this list fit the bill. Most of them pack plenty of power, too. Keep reading to learn about the most efficient large hybrid SUVs on the market, broken down into traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Traditional Large Hybrid SUVs
2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid: 34 MPG combined
Starting Price: $TBA
Toyota has completely redesigned the Highlander Hybrid for the 2020 model year. With the makeover comes a big jump in fuel economy over the 2019 Highlander Hybrid’s respectable 30/28/29 mpg rating (city/highway/combined). Toyota hasn’t released full fuel economy numbers for the 2020 model but has announced an EPA-estimated 34 mpg in combined city and highway driving. How did this happen? Toyota replaced the 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid system with a 2.5-liter I-4 hybrid setup, bringing total horsepower down from 306 to 240. We’ll have to see whether or not the crossover has enough gumption to satisfy consumers when it goes on sale in February 2020, but we do expect it to feel much smoother on the road because it sits on a new platform.
2020 Lexus RX 450h: 30 MPG combined
Starting Price: $47,775
Lexus’ top-selling crossover is at its best when paired with the optional hybrid powertrain. Together, an electric motor and 3.5-liter V-6 produce 308 hp, which is sent to all four wheels through a CVT. Despite its size, the Lexus RX 450h is energetic and agile around corners, all while getting 31/28/30 mpg. On one tank, drivers can travel an EPA-estimated 516 miles. The interior also impresses with six standard USB ports, comfortable seats, and soft-touch materials everywhere you look.
2020 Lexus RX 450h L: 29 MPG combined
Starting price: $51,485
Lexus finally came out with a three-row version of the RX a few years ago. Featuring captain’s chairs in the second row, this model has room for six people. The price and fuel economy penalty that comes with the extra row is minimal. This 308-hp hybrid crossover impresses with its rating of 29/28/29 mpg, 1 combined mpg below the two-row version. Unfortunately, though, adults will find space is at a premium in the third row, so these seats are best reserved for short jaunts around town.
2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid: 28 MPG combined
Starting price: $53,475
If you don’t like stopping for gas, the redesigned hybrid Explorer is a good bet. The EPA estimates you can travel 540 miles on a single tank of gas if you opt for the rear-wheel-drive version. All-wheel drive drops range to a still-solid 482 miles. The Explorer delivers 27/29/28 mpg with rear-drive and 23/26/25 mpg with all-wheel drive, but its real specialties are power and towing. This large hybrid SUV makes 318 hp from its 3.3-liter V-6 engine and electric motor pairing, and it can tow 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid: 27 MPG combined
Starting price: $53,895
It may be a hybrid, but the hybrid MDX packs quite the punch with 321 total horsepower. It has a 321-hp 3.0-liter V-6 engine and two rear-mounted electric motors, which dole out torque directly to the left and right rear wheels for better control. Fuel economy is reasonable for a big hybrid SUV at 26/27/27 mpg. The interior remains quiet when you put the wheels to pavement, and there’s plenty of space inside the cabin for second-row passengers. The third row, however, is a bit more cramped.
Plug-In Large Hybrid SUVs*
*These SUVs are ranked by MPGe, or “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent.” This metric represents the number of miles a car can travel using a quantity of alternative fuel (in this case, electricity stored in a battery) with the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline. Check out our complete list of plug-in hybrid SUVs with the best MPGe ratings here.
2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e: 56 MPGe
Starting price: $TBA
BMW’s most recent plug-in hybrid X5 was the xDrive40e. For 2020, BMW is bringing out a new version called the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance, which offers 394 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The EPA has yet to release official fuel economy numbers for this new entry, but as we learned in our First Drive, it’s a comfortable daily driver that doesn’t even feel like a hybrid.
2020 Volvo XC90 PHEV: 55 MPGe
Starting price: $67,995
This unassuming large Volvo brings a lot more performance to the table than you might expect from a big hybrid SUV. With 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, the three-row plug-in hybrid takes just 5.0 seconds to hit 60 mph, and it does so quietly and effortlessly. The XC90 also features an opulent interior and is available in six- or seven-seat configurations.
2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid: 50 MPGe
Starting price: $159,625
The standard V-8 Bentley Bentayga isn’t very efficient, delivering 14/23/17 mpg. If you’re looking for a little more efficiency, the Bentayga Hybrid nets 50 MPGe in its default Hybrid drive mode. This 5,800-pound ultra-luxe ute knows how to hustle; the 443-hp, 516-lb-ft V-6 is smooth and quiet when it sprints to 60 mph in a Bentley-estimated 5.2 seconds.
2019/20 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid: 46 MPGe
Starting price: $82,450
Among the big hybrid SUVs on the market, this one is the surest to put a smile on your face when you hit the accelerator. The standard model makes 455 hp, but the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid kicks things up a notch with 670 hp and an eye-watering price tag of $163,250. Excess comes in many forms—including large hybrid SUVs.
Large Hybrid SUVs With the Best Fuel Economy
