Chronicling Cats (2019) Lifts

After doing the Broadway Revival, it hit me that Andy also choreographed the 2019 film (I don't know what that means, but it sure means something), and a good chunk of the choreography was changed from the revival to the movie. So time to see how bad he did with this one...help me.

1:40 Are we counting the lady carrying Victoria in the bag as a lift?

5:15 Two random cats in the background get lifted. I might have trouble differentiating the cats because of how horrible the lighting is in this movie, and they didn't give most of the background cats names. (2)

6:29 Munkustrap lifts Victoria (1)

6:45 Another Munk and Victoria, this will be a common one because her actual love interest can't do lifts I guess. (1)

7:20 Admetus (?) climbs over either Socartes or Plato. It's lift adjacent.

10:21 Several Cats lift Cassandra (this is in The Naming of Cats and they should have just cut it if they're not going to use it to actually name the cats) (1)

12:20 Random cat in background gets lifted, followed by Munkustrap carrying Victoria down. (2)

12:47 One cat is helping another cat climb on a pole in the background, and another gets lifts off another pole (2)

16:40 Munkustrap lifts Jenny down to the ground (1)

21:20 Demeter (I'm pretty sure) and another cat (Electra I think) get lifted (2)

By what would be intermission we're at 52 lifts...not as bad as the revival, but there's still an hour of film left.

So in total, we have 76 lifts, which is one less lift that the revival. The lifts are spread out throughout the whole production, which is better than having them in nothing but the first half. But you run into the problem where most of the lifts are done either in the background, or by cats that weren't given any names. Which makes me less impressed with them, and I can't even have fun making fun of all the lifts the cats do. Which is another reason this movie isn't fun to watch.

The Vienna Revival is resuming tomorrow for their third season, and Vicky Riddoch covering Rumpleteazer wants to give everyone a sneak peak.

She wants to make sure everyone is comfortable and relaxed, and that includes Mungojerrie.

Victoria

Most Ticklish Spots: Arches/Balls of Feet, Tummy, Armpits

Super-shy, super-sweet, and with the cutest little smile...you have to ask if she’s ticklish? ^^

Gets adorably flustered when tickled...curls into a ball, blushes, covers her mouth with her hands, vainly tries to push her tickler away, the works.

Has a high-pitched, delicate giggle. Will plead with you to let her go as soon as the tickling starts.

It’s not a death spot for her, but rubbing her ears makes her all squirmy. :)

Secretly likes playful tickle fights with her boyfriend.

Whenever someone picks her up by the waist during a dance (which happens a lot) she has to hold her breath to keep from giggling.

Like his girl Victoria, Misto is incredibly shy and gets embarrassed easily...so of course, he’s super ticklish.

One of those guys whose response to being tickled is letting out a lilting “AaAAAaaaAAAAaaa” sound and backing up as quickly as possible.

Many of the Jellicle girls think he’s cute, especially when teased, and love to tickle him and watch him squirm.

Sometimes he playfully tickles Victoria awake in the mornings...he’s not a tickler but he just loves to make her smile. Of course, she always gets him back.

Yes, he’s done the sawed-in-half magic trick with Victoria before, and yes, he couldn’t resist tickling her feet when he did it.

Munkustrap

Most Ticklish Spots: Ribs, Ankles

As the second-in-command and de facto leader of the Jellicles, he takes himself waaaayyyyy too seriously and needs to lighten up.

Hates being tickled. It’s not dignified!

He acts all mature and uptight but will panic and jump out of his skin if you sneak up on him and tickle him. The younger cats find this hilarious.

Rum Tum Tugger

Not ticklish except on his ribs.

Total ler energy.

As a swinging ladies man, he knows how to tease and flirt until girls are all over him - and that includes tickling.

Not a kink for him, but if it gets a lady excited, he’ll do it.

Actually rather likes being tickled.

Actually not all that ticklish, but she kinda overreacts to being tickled - you know, that loud, forced cackle that everyone in a two-block radius can hear and lets you know she’s “fun.” It’s cute for about two seconds and then gets really annoying - like literally everything else about her. :/

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer

Totally about to launch a tickle attack on Victoria’s helpless armpits. :D (Also for the life of me I couldn’t find a good gif of them.)

A mischievous duo who love teasing and messing with the other cats.

Will definitely using tickling as a distraction to prank, steal from, or annoy their prey...or each other. They’ve almost certainly employed tickle torture before.

As indicated in the above scene, sometimes use their tails for playful tickles.

They’re vicious, cruel ticklers who will loudly taunt their victims.

Mungojerrie has a loud belly laugh. Rumpleteazer has a machine-gun-speed giggle-snort.

Rumple is most ticklish on her belly, soles, and back. For some reason, Mungo is only ticklish on his right foot. That’s it. Nowhere else.

Cassandra

Most Ticklish Spots: Feet, Hips

Has that whole “bitchy high school girl who thinks she’s better than everyone” attitude...so tickling is a good way to knock her down a peg.

Has an angry, loud laugh. She’s a thrasher and won’t hold still for you.

Hates hates HATES being tickled. She’s more likely to retaliate by clawing your eyes out than returning the favor.

That being said, her claws are very effective tickle tools.

Bombalurina

Most Ticklish Spots: Feet

Seductive, slinky, and more than a little bit evil, Bombalurina is an expert at “persuading” others to see things Macavity’s way.

Her methods don’t usually involve tickling, either for seduction or torture...that’s only happened once or twice. But she’s very sadistic and very, very good at it when she needs to be.

Those retractable claws are killer.

Was tickled frequently as a kitten but hasn’t had that experience in quite a while.

Like Cassandra, she despises being tickled and will probably react with violence.

Once tried to slyly tickle Macavity...she got no reaction beyond mild annoyance.

Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat

Also known in some circles as “Train Daddy”

Says he’s only ticklish on one spot, but no one knows where it is.

Tuggerteazer!!! I don't know but I just love the idea of them being good friends, especially since Teazer in most current productions that resemble the classic choreo have Teazer doing Etcetera's squealing bit. Also I just think Tugger will be very intrigued by Teazer and her antics since she has a very high and lively lifestyle he knows she's got stories and wants to hear them.

I just like the fact that they can show and teach each other so much from their different life perspectives and still have some things in common. also like all of Allison and Hyla's video's together sold me like love triangle? tell me more!!! along with the 2019 Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer song.

I feel like Mungoteazer has a potentially angsty dynamic whether it's platonic or romantic. since it's sort of them against the world situation. Especially in cats 2019 since they don't seem to be that involved with the tribe probably just acquaintances with them at best.

I prefer to see them as partners/ close friends but not siblings cause I hc them with different parents, also so like I don't mentally die whenever they get paired for the mating dance or whatever it's called.

Okay, one thing I LOVE about 2019 Mungo and Teazer is their apparent rivalry. Like... This stare or the moment when Teazer throws a needle to Mungo's tail. It almost looks like they're competing to get Victoria's attention or to be the most mischievous one. But then, this behaviour is balanced with all the gesture of collaboration and mutual care they show.

I just love my kids and I love how, despite the small gestures of competitivity, they still care for each other and help each other. They're a perfect team.

And there’s nothing at all to be done about that

So, I tend not to ask the actors questions about romantic headcanons for their characters, since Cats usually prefers to keep it ambiguous. (In fact, I once had an entire DM conversation with a former Mungojerrie actor on the subject of that ambiguity while both of us delicately sidestepped around the 'siblings or lovers' question without ever taking his own Mungojerrie as an example.)

But that's not so true of the Broadway revival and tours, in which pairings are more obvious and more stable than in most productions, and in which some actors (especially in the last couple of years) are readier to confirm or discuss their own romantic interpretations on social media.

And besides... the tour ends this week..! So when Allison Lian (Rumpelteazer) solicted open questions (22/6/22), I decided it probably wouldn't be too intrusive to ask...

Which is a fascinating answer. And I'm going to put it side by side with this other response I got on 23/3/22, to a question I asked Brianna Kim (usually Sillabub, here covering Rumpelteazer) when she did a Q&A:

Mungojerrie still holding himself a bit aloof as a defense mechanism? or being so deeply invested in his joking, ne'er-do-well persona that he can't actually get too attached?

(Though there are moments when the serious or even dangerous side emerges, as we see in the interactions between him and Pouncival in 'Glamour Cat', where he's both nastier than Pouncival but also has more of a sense of when things might be going too far and it would be better to restrain or protect the kitten. At least, that's what I get from Tony d'Alelio's Mungojerrie, in the 2019 cast.)

As to Rumpelteazer though, both Bri's answer and Allison's suggest that the attachment between M&R is more recent and not actually fully developed yet: it's still growing, rather than being an established relationship. And there may be some sides of him which she doesn't realise...

Which is an interpretation I don't think I've seen before! They are alway one of the most couply couples in any production, and can be as in sync as Coricomile in their moments. So, whether we consider them as a couple or as siblings, there's a tendency to assume they know each other inside out by now, and are, in fact, as thick as thieves (thanks @skimblyshanks 😂). But if all that is still uncertain and in developmen, then the lyrics of their song are aspirational rather than descriptive—"we're totally going to be this awesome and everyone will know how notorious we are!"—and all their little bickering and flirting and uncertain improv moments in performance take on extra poignancy as they try to build that version of themselves.

(While Teazer, presumably, tries to keep it cool and pretend she's not way past the point of crushing and is now officially In Love. Because otherwise she thinks she'll lose his respect.)

Anyway, my conclusion is:

All the 'constantly mistaken for a couple' / 'everybody realises it but them' / 'slow-burn nuisances to lovers' tropes.

("What? Nooo, we're not a couple, everybody snuggles up into each other's lap and falls asleep tangled up together in the sun platonically, look, Pounce is snoring on Jenny's leg right now..!")
