Say Hi to the New 2020 Toyota Highlander!

The 2019 and 2020 model years have been exciting so far! The RAV4 has been redesigned, the Avalon too, and the Corolla, and the Supra is coming back! But, we’re not done just yet. At the New York International Auto Show, Toyota announced the new Toyota Highlander and we’re excited to welcome this redesigned favorite to Toyota of Clermont later this year. Here are the initial details and what you can expect to see!

New Year, New Highlander

The gasoline model of the new Toyota Highlander is set to be released in December of this year and the hybrid model in February of next year. 

For its fourth generation, you can expect that Toyota is going to make a big deal out of this one by taking things to a new level for this family SUV. Here are a few of the initial details and what you can expect to see:

A new sophisticated and edgy looking exterior design that emphasizes new body lines and flow. 

Engine choices like internal combustion V6 (that gets an EPA estimated 22 combined mpg) and a hybrid 4-cylinder drivetrain (gets an EPA estimated 34 combined mpg and gets a combined 240 horsepower).

The hybrid model will also feature Normal, Sport, and Eco driving modes along with an EV mode that allows the car to drive for a short period of time strictly on electric power.

2023 Nissan Maxima: The Next-Gen Nissan Maxima Review

2023 Nissan Maxima You may know the Nissan Maxima as a bland sedan brand, destined to become a fleet car for rental companies or taxi services. Over the years, the car did have a few decent versions, among them the SR, which was supposed to be a sportier variant of the mediocre front-wheel-drive mid-size sedan.

To make matters worse, the Maxima dropped the manual option in 2008 and, since then, the powerful 3.5-liter V-6 has had to work with the crippled CVT unit. However, the Nissan Maxima 2023 has the potential to be an attractive proposition. This is the reason.

It was initially believed that the current eighth-generation Maxima would be discontinued sometime in the next two years. This belief was further strengthened by the decline in sales of large sedans, in response to increasing demand for crossovers and SUVs. However, the data shows that not all car owners join the SUV/crossover.

For example, 42 percent of Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze owners do not upgrade to a high-riding vehicle. Instead, they choose another similar vehicle from another automaker, which is often a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

Despite the crossover/SIV craze, sedans, whether they're compact, mid-size, or full-size, still make up a sizeable percentage of the automotive market. In addition, the sedan has become more versatile than ever. So, how is the Nissan Maxima related?

Maxima hasn't been offered in Europe, for almost two decades, but this may change. Given that compact sedans have become bigger than ever, certain models have become obsolete.

For example, Toyota discontinued the Avensis, positioned above the Corolla, in favor of a smaller Corolla (not much smaller nowadays). This in turn leaves room for larger models, which is why the Toyota Camry returned to the European market in 2018, after a long absence.

This means that the 2023 Nissan Maxima could once again become a global model. Plus, the Maxima has already gone through a mid-cycle refresh, in 2019, so you can bet it'll be around for a longer time. Hopefully not as long as the GT-R and 370Z.

According to the Motor1 article, 2022 could also spawn a fully electric version of the Nissan Maxima. However, that probably won't happen until 2025, when the model is rumored to be undergoing a complete redesign.

The current generation Nissan Maxima looks a bit sportier and more distinctive than the previous generation, some of which have a very conservative styling. If the Maxima 2023 is indeed influenced by the Nissan V-Motion concept, this means a more futuristic and sporty interpretation of the current design.

The Maxima could also be a four-door coupe or liftback (hatchback) in some corners, similar to the Kia Stinger or Fastback Peugeot 508. However, this will most likely happen after 2025.

One thing is for sure, the Maxima has become a pretty fast car, even with a CVT. The 0 to 60 mph time of the current generation is 5.7 seconds and on a good day, the Maxima proves it can run with the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R.

For the engine, the Maxima is expected to still use the 3.5-liter VQ35DE V-6 engine, which has the potential to produce a little power. A prize, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet (354 Nm).

Maxima's biggest weak point is the gearbox, which is a CVT. While it's great for fuel economy, it doesn't quite match the pretensions of a sportier car.

This is the bad news. While Nissan currently has options when it comes to automatic transmission options, the 2023 model could still feature a CVT gearbox. Nissan did come with a heavy-duty toroidal CVT that has a greater torque capacity, but it might only be featured on pick-up trucks and SUVs. We still think the Maxima should have a manual option or at least a proper automatic like the Mercedes-derived nine-speed automatic.

Now, more than ever, it makes sense for the Nissan Maxima to, once again, become a global model. With Nissan's current pricing strategy, the Japanese sporty sedan has the potential to generate great value for money, not only in the North American market but globally as well.

However, the CVT had to go if the Maxima wanted to reenact its sporty character. While the Nissan Maxima 2023 is partly a mystery, we'll likely get more of the same, until a complete redesign comes out, in 2025.

2020 Toyota Corolla XSE Hatchback Interior Review: Can Small Still Be Premium?

When the latest-gen Toyota Corolla was evaluated at our 2019 Car of the Year program, we lauded it as the best-driving Corolla in a long time, and we gave it high marks for its premium-feeling interior. Have our feelings about the latter changed a year later? Find out as we go inside, literally and figuratively, the 2020 Toyota Corolla.

Our fully loaded 2020 Corolla XSE hatchback tester came equipped with the 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine and CVT transmission. Resplendent in a color Toyota calls Blue Flame, with a mostly grey/black interior, our Corolla tester was sharp enough to garner appreciative nods from a couple young dudes in a Honda Civic Si while we were out on a test drive.

Stitched and Soft Touch Surroundings Say Quality

We know the feeling, as we’ve been mostly nodding our heads while inside the 2020 Corolla. As you get in, there is a strong sense of quality from the first pull of the door handle. It’s the soft, little things, like the sturdy, yet “soft return” grab handles above and soft-touch gauge cluster surround and dash pad. Handsome white stitching runs all around the cabin, across the dash, the center console and seats, and contrasts nicely against the pebble-grained surfaces. The only obvious place without the contrast stitching is the XSE’s leather-wrapped steering wheel, which makes sense as it is an upgrade that needs to work with a variety of interior combinations. That said, the look is very put together, particularly the gray, tweed-ish cloth inserts in the front seats. For a vehicle that costs $25,295, the Corolla XSE feels quite premium.

Although the slidable armrest between the front two seats has enough storage beneath it for a couple of water bottles and has both a 12V socket and 2.5amp USB port, there aren’t any other places for your gear, aside from traditional door pockets, cupholders, and glovebox. Toyota put tons of additional trays and cubbies in the Highlander and RAV4, so it would have been nice to see some of that here. The XSE model we tested did have the optional Qi wireless charging mat ahead of the shifter, but it’s a bit shallow. Not much else will fit there—your phone might not either, if it has a bulky case—or stay put while driving.

Sharp, Full Color Graphics Display and Apple/Android Connectivity

On the tech front, our Corolla XSE has nearly all the bells and whistles Toyota offers on the Corolla, including Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes features like lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, and radar-guided cruise control. These features are well integrated into the driver’s cockpit, with a well-considered layout to the matte finish button array. Screens are large and bright; the 7-inch TFT display in the instrument cluster is particularly punchy and nice to look at, but its crispness does highlight the comparitively dull, lower-res quality of the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screen (both standard on the XSE trim). The icons on the central display are a bit gray and drab, but if Apple Carplay is your jam, you’re in luck because it looks big and bold in the Corolla. Android Auto is also available, if you’re so inclined.

What About the Back Seats? Is Second Row, Second Class?

One of our comments from the notes at Car of the Year 2019 was that new Corolla is a bit space-limited, particularly in the rear seat. It’s fine as small cars go; your author stands 5-feet 11-inches tall, and can sit behind from driver’s seat (set for himself) with his knees not quite touching the seat back. There others in the class that boast more capacious rear sets.

There is a distinct lack of features in the rear seat. There no HVAC vents or power outlets of any kind—neither 12V nor USB—just a little cubby carved into the back of the frontseat armest, suitable for a tin of Altoids. Corolla Cargo Capacity: Constrained But Well Appointed

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback’s rear cargo is on the small side, but there are some handy features, including some stealth hooks (for securing grocery bags) and an orange loop under the cargo cover. This is to hook and hold up the panel that covers the full-size spare and tool kit—both of which are nice to see at this price point. We had some rain during our test session with the Corolla and are happy to report that front and rear wipers work well, but that the rear wiper motor is quite noisy. Either that or that we only noticed it because the Corolla is very quiet inside.

A year after its debut, the interior of the 2020 Toyota Corolla still holds up as one of the better cabins in the segment. It definitely feels premium for the price point, especially for the driver and front passenger. Others in the class (especially the Korean competition), provide more features for the rear seat passengers, but if that isn’t your concern, consider the Corolla.

More beautiful than ever, new Camry remains The 2019 Toyota Camry is a must-have family sedan that is difficult to compete with if you consider its reputation cast in concrete. But beware, it is a solid reputation but if you find yourself in a segment neglected by large numbers of consumers, missing for the most fertile terrain of SUVs, survival is not guaranteed.

But give back to Caesar ... Toyota has always managed to make its vehicle attractive and pleasing to the masses, and that's why you necessarily know someone around you driving a Camry. Perhaps because of market trends leaning towards utility models, the company also realized that reliability was not enough. But this latest generation of the model is really more attractive, standing out from its competition with a bolder and more athletic style than ever before. Toyota has divided its range into nine trim levels with sportier versions including the SE, XSE and XSE V6 which have a slightly different design from the rest of the range. We find on these versions a more aggressive calender, for example. Toyota also offers quieter versions with a more stretched grille as we found on the vehicle we drove, the XLE (also available in hybrid).

The Camry XLE receives a front-wheel drive system with the Traction Control System (TRAC), as well as the Navigation Package (priced at $ 2740). There's a panoramic sunroof, automatic two-zone climate control, and 18 "aluminum wheels (with the Navigation Package, or 17" wheels). This eighth generation of the Camry introduced for the first time in 2017 has been embellished and took advantage of small changes to renew its appeal, although we do not speak here of radical changes. Although we may have to complain about the dashboard that lacks some inspiration, we welcome Toyota's effort to give this general-purpose car a distinctive atmosphere and, among other things, wood finishes that the we found before only among luxury brands. The door openings are wide and the thresholds easy to cross, as one is entitled to expect from a Toyota sedan. Once seated in the cabin of the Camry space is quite generous - again, not surprising, given the main purpose of this model. The Camry remains a large sedan and its folded chest offers a large cargo space, admittedly less than some competitors, but it even gets a good rating. That's one of the reasons it sells so well. The interior is ergonomic. There are many small storage well organized to keep what you want to keep nearby like the wallet, phone and other essentials.

There are charging ports and USB connectors, but also a stereo JBL, a Wifi point, a 7.0-inch touchscreen interface Entune 3.0 for central control series and also available in improved version for the XLE and the XSE (this is called an 8.0-inch screen). Competent and fast, Entune remains a little difficult to grasp. It takes time to sort orders and we do not always find quickly what we want - which is problematic for impatient people like me. Mechanical and fuel consumption The XLE has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 28 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing model. That's good, but not as exciting as the V6's sportier version of the 301 hp model with 267 lb-ft of torque. Anyway, they are beautiful powers compared to the previous model. On the road The Camry is satisfactory for a "normal" driving without any craze or haste. The engine is economical and the transmission quite responsive to not feel it. The engine is neither noisy nor intrusive if it is spared, but out of his comfort zone it is heard. It is not as responsive as the similar power engine found in the Honda Accord, the rival of the Camry, or in the Nissan Altima.
