For as long as I could remember, the B-segment sedan market was the epicentre of the Malaysian automotive industry – it was the segment that commanded the most attention and one that had the greatest impact on our buying habits. And while plenty of segment players have come and gone, two titans remain etched in consumers’ minds – the Honda City and the Toyota Vios.
Both cars battled it out for decades as king of this hotly-contested segment, each taking turns to deal blows with every passing generation, and each seemingly unwilling to back down. In recent years, it was the more modern, more competent City that secured the lead, helping Honda break Toyota’s stranglehold on the non-national sales title, as well as becoming the second most popular brand overall.
Not a moment too soon, the new Vios was introduced just last month, here to reclaim the ground it lost. This time, however, there’s more to the battle than just its arch nemesis – in case you haven’t heard, the SUV is the new “in” thing, and with the emergence of the ever-popular Honda HR-V and with models from Proton and Perodua encroaching into the segment’s price range, it’s getting very crowded indeed.
So, seconds out, round four – is the new Vios good enough not just to overcome its bitter rival, but also fend off the more desirable crossovers in the periphery – and make buyers overlook that enormous front grille? Toyota was eager for us to find out, so it got us to drive the latest heavyweight contender all the way to Desaru and back for a proper test.
Toyota may bill this Vios as all new, but it actually rides on the same platform as before, dating back to the second-gen model from 2007. It doesn’t even have a new model code – instead, it continues the same NSP151 designation as its predecessor. Not to matter, because pretty much everything you can see and feel (except the engine and transmission, which we’ll get to later) has been revamped in one way or another.
Not least of which are the looks, and it’s here that the company decided to throw caution to the wind, its Keen Look design language reaching cartoonish levels. It’s the front end that is divisive, with a humongous lower grille giving the car an absolutely massive grin, and a slim central inlet acting as a “moustache”. The effect is amplified by the vertical fog light surrounds that sit at the far corners of the bumper, flanking the grille.
The rest of the design is pretty straightforward, with broader, slimmer and sharper head- and tail lights contributing to a wider look. Along the side, a new shoulder line sweeps upwards aft from the front wheels and stretches towards the rear doors, and there’s also a second line that crosses the door handles on its way towards the tail lights. The beltline also sweeps up more elegantly than before.
Instead of offering a tarted-up TRD Sportivo model at the top of the range, UMW Toyota Motor is providing a bodykit as a standalone option on all models. I never liked these kits as they always added a lot of visual bulk, but I’ll admit that the front grille garnish on this one does disguise the size of that grille somewhat.
The interior is more conventional, with the only controversial bit being the Lexus NX-esque protruding centre console. The fake stitching on the hard plastic dashboard is just as offensive as ever, but the presentation is at least a little more tasteful here, and it’s all screwed together in typical Toyota bombproof fashion.
A new feature is the standard-fit automatic air-conditioning, which was previously only offered in other markets, although you still don’t get rear vents. Corolla Altis owners will be familiar with the redesigned three-spoke steering wheel, which loses the outgoing model’s slightly flattened bottom but still has a rim that is just a touch too thick for my liking, and which still doesn’t adjust for reach.
Behind it sit a pair of clear, legible dials (somewhat obscured by reflections) that do a fancy sweeping motion on startup, as well as a new 4.2-inch colour multi-info display that has been seen on everything from the Camry to the 86. At the back, the rear cupholders (there are now two of them) have been moved into the rear armrest, and the new USB charging ports are a godsend – even if they look like complete afterthoughts.
Don’t expect any miracles in terms of cabin space, as the exterior dimensions remain largely identical. Sure, at 4,425 mm long and 1,730 mm wide, the new car is 15 mm longer and 30 mm wider, but it retains the old car’s 1,475 mm height and 2,550 mm wheelbase, so no packaging breakthroughs here.
Indeed, you’re not gonna find rear legroom that would put D-segment sedans to shame – that’s still the City’s party trick – and rear headroom is also a little tight due to the sloping roofline. But it’s not what you’d call cramped by any stretch of the imagination, and you’ll still fit four adults comfortably.
The boot, which measures the same 506 litres as before, is likewise not class leading but it’s plenty for groceries and luggage. Do bear in mind, however, that the 60:40-split rear seats do not fold completely flat, the resulting bump making loading longer items a pain; the pews are also fixed on the base J variant.
One area that sees a much-needed improvement is safety. All models now get seven airbags as standard (up from just two before), joining stability control that was introduced across the range in 2016. What’s more, the top G model receives blind spot monitoring, but unfortunately you still don’t get autonomous emergency braking. Come on, Toyota – you can get a Perodua Myvi with this kind of technology!
The engine remains unchanged for 2019, retaining the 2NR-FE 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i naturally-aspirated four-cylinder mill that makes the same outputs as before – 107 PS at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It’s now paired exclusively to a continuously variable transmission with a seven-speed mode (and new paddle shifters for the G), meaning that, for the first time, there won’t be a manual option, not even on the J.
Yes, before you rush into the comments, it’s yet another carryover engine and gearbox for the Vios, but at least here they are both fairly up-to-date, being only three years old. Indeed, the powertrain doesn’t feel at all outdated – it’s responsive and creamy smooth, and I’m pretty sure it will deliver the kind of fuel efficiency that buyers have come to expect in this segment.
What it does feel is underpowered. Sure, a deficit of 13 PS and 5 Nm over the City may not seem like much, but when both power and torque outputs are barely into triple figures, you’re going to notice the difference. Especially if you compare the two cars back-to-back, like what Toyota let us do during the drive.
Whereas the Honda will almost leap off the line, the Toyota struggles to get up to highway speeds, even though the engine itself is perky and willing to rev. It needs all the help it can get, and thankfully the CVT has been retuned to mitigate the relative lack of pace.
I’ve previously criticised the transmission for being sluggish, and it the recalibration goes some way towards addressing that, the CVT responding noticeably quicker to throttle inputs. The City is quicker still but at times it feels a little overeager, so it can be a bit difficult to drive smoothly. The Vios counters by reacting in more gradual and progressive manner, which is a benefit in stop-start traffic.
Of course, you can play around with the new Sport mode (conversely, an Eco mode is also available), which actually does a commendable job in making the car feel more sprightly, keeping the engine at higher revs and operating more like a stepped automatic transmission.
The snappy seven-speed function also does a better job of mimicking actual gears compared to other similar systems – even though the paddles themselves feel disappointingly cheap. I’d leave it as it is, however; this is still a family car, after all, and there’s only so much the CVT can do to mask the shortfall in power.
It’s just as well, then, that Toyota has not tried to chase a sportier driving experience, and instead sought to improve the Vios’ already impressive ride comfort and refinement. To that end, torsional rigidity has been increased thanks to a greater number of spot welding points and the use of underbody reinforcement, and spring and damper rates have also been updated.
The car’s deputy chief engineer Akira Kasamatsu told us Toyota not only benchmarked the new Vios against the City but also larger, more sophisticated C-segment models – and it clearly shows. Next to the Honda, this is a much more relaxing car to cruise in on the highway, with much lower road and wind noise even at speeds well over triple figures – undoubtedly helped by the acoustic windscreen found on the E and G models.
It also has the more absorbent ride, with soft springs and reasonable damping helping to iron out much of our pockmarked roads, even though it can’t quite shake off the cheap, hollow feel of most Japanese B-segment models. The result is a calmer drive, whether you’re just pootling along or travelling at a faster pace.
Out on the open road, the City’s sharper steering makes an immediate first impression, but a lack of body control also means that it feels more nervous as speeds climb, an unfortunate Honda trait in recent years. The Vios, meanwhile, is more composed and stable – but two things count against it.
Firstly, the car oddly tends to get affected by crosswinds, even at the national speed limit, causing it to meander around in its own lane. Correcting its trajectory isn’t such a straightforward task, either, no thanks to the steering that is so slow and vague as to give you no sense of connection to the front wheels.
As you’d expect, this also counts against the Vios when it comes to going around corners, with the numb helm and excessive body roll discouraging you from driving in a more spirited manner, even though the chassis itself is more than capable of coping. Despite its sporting pretensions, this is a car whose comfort-oriented character nudges you into taking things slow in order to appreciate its strengths.
Don’t let the stylistic overhaul fool you – the new Vios isn’t a wholesale revolution. Rather, it’s a surprisingly nuanced rejuvenation that leans heavily on the things that made this segment stalwart such a favourite for family buyers in the first place. However (and this is a personal thing), I’ve always felt that UMW Toyota’s practice of offering bodykits and its insistence of turning it into an amateur race car sends mixed signals.
For this is no longer the sportiest offering in this segment, neither possessing the most powerful engine nor the most dynamic of handling characteristics. For better or for worse, it’s the City that will give you what little enjoyment that can be had in this price range. But then, if performance and driver involvement is what you’re looking for, what on earth are you doing shopping for a B-segment sedan?
More worrying for Toyota is the emerging brigade of crossovers looking to steal its lunch money, and we’ll have to wait and see if the market will shift away from the humble four-door. Be in no doubt, however, that the Vios has never been better equipped to take them all head on. But you’ll have to get over that big mouth first.

Introducing the Toyota GR Supra A90 Edition
The all-new Toyota GR Supra, the fifth generation of Toyota’s legendary sports car and the first global GR model to be produced by Toyota GAZOO Racing, has made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Conceived as a sports car in its purest form, the new Toyota GR Supra builds on the heritage of Toyota’s past Supra generations and the 2000GT sports car with its classic layout of a front-mounted, straight-six engine driving the rear wheels.
Driving enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating blend of power, agility and precision handling, achieved thanks to the car’s combination of a short wheelbase and wide track, light weight, low centre of gravity and highly rigid body.
The 3.0-litre engine benefits from a twin-scroll turbocharger and produces 250kW and 500Nm of torque. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it is characterised by smooth and powerful acceleration, with large amounts of torque available across the full range of engine speeds.
Toyota GAZOO Racing was instrumental in honing the new sports car’s performance, working extensively on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife and surrounding roads in Germany in order to achieve the most agile, stable and rewarding handling. Further testing was also carried out on roads around the world, including in Australia with chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.
To be certain that the car delivered on its promise, Toyota president Akio Toyoda put it to the test at the Nürburgring in his role as a master driver before giving it the final green light. Mr Toyoda said he had developed his craft as a master driver by spending countless hours driving an old Supra at the Nürburgring.
“Even though Toyota had no plans to make a new Supra, just like a lot of other diehard Supra fans around the world, I secretly wanted to make it happen,” he said. “The new GR Supra was born through testing at Nürburgring, and I can honestly say that it is a car that is fun to drive and better than ever.”
On the local front, the new Toyota GR Supra will be launched mid-2019. All vehicles will be built in Graz, Austria.
Pure sports car design
Toyota’s great sports car heritage is referenced in the design of the new Toyota GR Supra. The landmark 2000GT’s influence is evident in the long bonnet, compact body and double-bubble roof, while the distinctive look of the fourth generation Supra is captured with its muscular rear wings and the arc of the integrated spoiler.
The new Toyota GR Supra also shares the same classic sports car format of a powerful front-mounted six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive as its celebrated predecessors.
Supra’s design theme was first previewed in the dramatic FT-1 concept car, styled by Toyota’s CALTY studio in California and revealed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Toyota Supra chief designer Nobuo Nakamura gave his team a simple brief around the concept of “Condensed Extreme”, ensuring they were free to express their vision of a pure and individual sports car in a truly original design.
“Condensed Extreme” refers directly to the vehicle’s packaging, comprising three principal elements: a short wheelbase, large wheels and wide stance; a taut, two-seat cabin; and a long bonnet with a compact body that reflects the drivetrain combination of in-line six engine and rear-wheel drive.
Nakamura’s vision for an indisputably modern design that evoked the romance of classic sports car styling resulted in a car that approached the limits of what could be manufactured in higher volume, in particular the powerful curves of the rear.
In the finished design, the “Condensed” theme is evident in the relationship between the Toyota GR Supra’s large-diameter tyres, short wheelbase and overall length. The wheelbase is shorter than in the 86 coupe, and the tyres are larger.
“Extreme” is interpreted in the car’s wide stance, with tight cabin proportions and a wide track -contributing to a high level of manoeuverability and stability. The design was precisely calculated to achieve both optimum drag and lift characteristics, and an ideal front/rear weight balance.
The front styling was inspired by the fourth generation Supra, but has an even more expressive look with a low stance emphasised by a prominent central grille flanked by large air intakes that are essential for engine cooling.
In side view, the low bonnet generates a dynamic line that flows rearwards from the car’s low nose, while the back edge of the bonnet and the rear spoiler are set at almost the same height, linked by a low belt line.
The underbody has a slight forward angle while the cabin has a strong rearward slant, with blacked-out front pillars and character lines on the side of the roof emphasising the taut, compact cabin. Sharp-looking, sturdy sills express the car’s high rigidity.
At the rear, the arching lip spoiler has been optimised to suppress lift, while a trapezoidal shape to the rear bumper generates a sense of movement down and out towards the tyres.
Cockpit concept: putting the driver at the centre of the action
The driver’s cockpit in the new Toyota GR Supra neatly combines traditional GT elements with ultra-modern functionality. Designed to help the driver focus entirely on the business of driving, it is directly influenced by the layout found in single-seater race cars.
A low, slim, horizontal dashboard maximises the forward view through the windscreen, helping the driver place the car with precision in high-speed driving. The principal controls are tightly grouped for quick and easy operation. The instrument panel, centre console and door trim combine in a seamless design that gives the cockpit a strong, unified feel.
The shape of the cockpit flows down into soft, supportive knee pads in the door trim and on the side of the centre console, their shape calculated with the benefit of Toyota GAZOO Racing’s circuit racing experience.
An asymmetric centre console marks a clear division between the enveloping driver’s cockpit and the more open passenger side of the Toyota GR Supra’s cabin.
The boot space is large enough for two people’s luggage for a weekend away and can be extended with a removable panel at the back of the cabin, creating enough space for a golf bag or all the personal kit needed for a track day.
Racing-inspired seats
The new Toyota GR Supra’s seats have a racing-influenced design that ensures comfort at all times and excellent support, in particular if the car is being used on-track. Body-holding side bolsters are featured on the cushion and the high back and there is an integrated head restraint.
Engine performance
The performance heart of the new Toyota GR Supra is its 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, producing up to 250kW and 500 Nm of torque. It is fitted with a twin-scroll turbocharger, high-precision direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve control that secure segment-leading torque performance from very low revs. The powerful, well-balanced, smooth and light revving engine delivers an exhilarating acceleration feel.
It is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides lightning-fast up and downshifts, with short ratios selected for the lower gears. The driver can take control of gear changes using paddle shifts on the steering wheel and can select Normal or Sport driving modes to suit their preference and the conditions.
A Launch Control function enables powerful acceleration from standstill with maximum traction, helping the car move from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
Engine sound and response, shift pattern, damping, steering and active differential performance are adjusted when the driver selects Sport mode. The vehicle stability control has a special “track” setting that can be selected, reducing the level of system intervention so the driver has greater control of the vehicle’s dynamic performance.
Active differential
An active differential that operates both when accelerating and decelerating and can seamlessly adjust from zero to full, 100% lock, with instant response – will be available on GR Supra.
A dedicated ECU monitors a wide range of inputs, including steering wheel, throttle and brake pedal operation, engine speed and yaw rate, for appropriate triggering of the actuator.
It delivers huge benefits in stability and efficiency when the tyres are reaching their performance limit. The effect is felt in all phases of cornering, with increased stability during the braking and cornering phases and then maximum grip as the driver accelerates out of the bend.
Intensive handling development program
High structural rigidity (greater even than the Lexus LFA supercar), a centre of gravity lower than the 86 coupe and ideal 50:50 front/rear weight distribution were fundamental to achieving the dynamic goals.
This required bold engineering decisions; for example, the desired weight balance was gained by moving the engine as far as possible rearwards, which introduced new production challenges.
The high body rigidity allowed for more precise and detailed refinements to the suspension geometry and tuning of the shock absorbers.
The new suspension design comprises double-joint spring MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link system at the rear. The front suspension sub-frame and control arm mounting points have been made extremely rigid to yield precise cornering characteristics, while the use of aluminium for the control arms and swivel bearings reduces the car’s unsprung weight, giving superior agility and efficiency.
The new GR Supra also features high-performance wheel hubs with sports-tuned electric power steering. The rear suspension benefits from a similarly lightweight design for the rigid sub-frame and the bracing that connects it to the body, helping ensure extremely precise wheel control.
To prioritise the car’s agility and handling, engineers achieved a 1.55:1 “golden ratio” between the wheelbase length and track width.
High specification level
The Toyota GR Supra’s specification extends to high-performance features and systems to help the driver enjoy the car’s full dynamic potential. These include an active differential, adaptive variable suspension, and available 19-inch forged alloy wheels with a high-performance brake package. Supra is also equipped with an extensive list of advanced safety features.
Toyota GAZOO Racing
Toyota GAZOO Racing is the umbrella organisation for Toyota’s global motorsport program. In the past year, it has won both the Le Mans 24 Hours in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the manufacturers’ championship in the FIA World Rally Championship.
Its work is based on three pillars: developing people through participation in motorsport; creating fans through the excitement of motorsport; and applying the knowledge gained from motorsport to make ever-better cars for the road that are fun to drive.
This ethos was fully embraced by Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of Toyota’s car-making business, and is shared today by Akio Toyoda to support the company’s commitment to building ever-better cars.
Starting with the Toyota GR Supra, Toyota GAZOO Racing will transfer the technical learnings it gains from racing and rallying to the development of new generations of Toyota’s sports-focused GR models as well as Toyota’s wider range of vehicles, driven by tens of millions of people around the world.

15 Coolest Cars from the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon
Despite the similarities in name, the Tokyo Auto Salon is a very different show from the bi-annual Tokyo Motor Show. Annually held at the hulking Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo Disneyland, the Tokyo Auto Salon is similar to the SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas. Unlike SEMA, however, the Tokyo Auto Salon is not a trade-only show and is open to the public. This year’s Tokyo Auto Salon features more than 900 unique vehicles from major Japanese manufacturers and aftermarket tuners.
Toyota GR Supra Super GT Concept
Based on the new Toyota Supra, the “GR Supra Super GT concept” will replace the Lexus LC 500 in the Japanese SuperGT touring car series for the 2020 season.
Mugen RC20GT (Custom Honda Civic Type R)
Mugen’s RC20GT features a complete overhaul of the Honda Civic Type R, with an array of lightweight body parts, as well as full brake and suspension kits. The body kit consists of a new hood, grille, front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a rear wing; Mugen claims these components are made from dry carbon fiber and the total weight savings is close to an adult’s body weight. Customers can order the full kit with or without the 20-inch wheels starting this summer in Japan, with incremental pricing said to be similar to the sticker price of the car itself.
Suzuki Jimny Sierra Pickup Style
With the introduction of the new Suzuki Jimny last year, this Sierra PickUp Style is one of a many customized Jimnys on display. A kei-car’s pickup bed was added to the back of the Jimny, leaving the wheelbase untouched but extending the rear overhang. By lifting the Jimny and putting on bigger tires, Suzuki has managed to make a Jeep Gladiator at two-thirds scale.
Subaru Forester Advance Sport
Subaru displayed several concepts given the STI treatment – and this Forester Advance Sport is just one of the few. An STI aero kit and special paint color have been added, but the engine has been left untouched.
Honda S660 Modulo Neo Classic custom
This Honda S660 Modulo Neo Classic has had a complete makeover, featuring a full body kit with 6-inch-wide fender flares, and a new hardtop and front grille. The wider stance calls for 205mm tires on the front and 255mm on the rear, all wrapped around 17-inch wheels. The stock 660c motor is retained to maintain its kei-car status.
Nissan Juke Personalization Adventure Concept
If the Juke Personalization Adventure concept’s crawler tracks look familiar, it’s because they are the same system found on Nissan’s “370Zki” from the Chicago Auto Show last year. Nissan added these cartoonishly large fender flares and side cover on crawler tracks to make the car look like it came straight out of an anime, complementing the Juke’s round shape and adding futuristic style.
Suzuki Super Carry kei-car pickup
Based on the Suzuki Super Carry, this kei-car pickup truck has been modified to look like a vintage Jeep Forward Control. The biggest Jeep fans will be able to spot the Suzuki’s grille has eight slots rather than the traditional seven. The work for this truck by the tuner shop Blow, which has converted many kei-cars, trucks, and vans with fiberglass conversions to look like school buses.
Suzuki Jimny Land Rover Defender kei-car custom
Another modified Suzuki Jimny; this kei-car features a custom grille, hood, front, and rear bumper, and over fenders, paying homage to the original Land Rover Defender.
Toyota 86 widebody custom
This widebody Toyota 86 has had its boxer engine replaced a 3S-GTE, a turbo-four from Toyota.
Ferrari 308 by Liberty Walk
Liberty Walk, the well-known custom body shop, brought a Ferrari 308 with classic “Zoku”-style fenders.
Lexus UX Modellista concept
The Lexus UX Modellista Concept is the brainchild of TRD Japan and Modellista. Along with a full aero kit, they added futuristic touches such as digital side mirrors and a front grille with a graphic display.
Camping Kei Car
Despite being just 135 inches long and 58 inches wide, this kei-car based camping car is designed to accommodate four adults.
Toyota Probox woody wagon
Students from NATS, a Japanese automotive college, built this woody wagon for a school project. As their base, The students used a Toyota Probox, which in Japan is a commercial station wagon.
Mazda RX-8-based RX-Stance
This “RX-Stance” is another creation by NATS students. Based on a Mazda RX-8, the RX-Stance features a lower, wider stance thanks to an all-new body, along with a grille from the new Mazda6 and headlights from the ND Miata.

2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition Debuts with Handling, Brake Upgrades
Despite near-universal cries for more power, the Toyota 86 has always been about balance and handling. That philosophy continues with the introduction of the 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition, which receives goodies to improve handling and braking but no significant power bump.
We had heard last year that Toyota would bring upgrades from its Gazoo Racing sub-brand to the U.S. under the TRD banner, which might explain why some of the items on the TRD Special Edition’s parts list sound familiar. The TRD model’s performance highlights include new Sachs dampers tuned for steering response and stability, Brembo brakes measuring 12.8 inches in the front and 12.4 inches in the rear, and new 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 215/40R-size Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires all around.
The model also gets a unique body kit, TRD exhaust with stainless steel tips, a smaller-diameter red and black steering wheel with red contrast stitching, red and black sport seats, red seat belts, and the TRD logo embroidered on the passenger-side dashboard. Despite near-universal cries for more power, the Toyota 86 has always been about balance and handling. That philosophy continues with the introduction of the 2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition, which receives goodies to improve handling and braking but no significant power bump.

The model also gets a unique body kit, TRD exhaust with stainless steel tips, a smaller-diameter red and black steering wheel with red contrast stitching, red and black sport seats, red seat belts, and the TRD logo embroidered on the passenger-side dashboard.
