March Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon. Four of the books I read this month were for the Trans Right Readathon, which I participated in from Mar 20-27 and donated money to the Transgender Law Center. Reviews below the cut:
The Swifts: A Dictionary of Scoundrels by Beth Lincoln (Dutton Books for Young Readers) A whimsical, witty debut middle grade murder mystery full of word play and puns. The Swifts are an ancient English family with many quirky rituals- one of them is the tradition of naming every new child by opening the dictionary and pointing out a word thought to determine their character; another is the massive family reunion they host every ten years when Swifts from around the world gather at the family manor, a decaying three story mansion, to try and find a massive treasure hoard hidden by an ancestor. Shenanigan Swift, youngest of three sisters who still actively live in the house, is determined that during this upcoming reunion she will be the one to find the treasure once and for all. But almost immediately, fights behind to erupt between the contentious Swifts, and a scream in the hallway leads to the discovery of a body at the bottom of the stairs, and then a deadly Scrabble duel, and then a bloody accident in the library... before she knows it, Shenanigan is searching not for a treasure hoard but for a murderer. This book includes nonbinary, trans, and queer characters and an overall message of being true to one's self despite societal and familiar pressures and expectations. An excellent read for anyone who enjoys a good all-ages tale.
Queen of the Tiles by Hannah Alkaf read by Catherine Ho (Salaam books/Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers) Najwa's world centered around her charismatic, beautiful, popular best friend Trina and their shared passion for competitive Scrabble. Then Trina collapsed and died during a tournament, and Najwa was thrown into the confusion of depression and grief. Finally, a year later, Najwa feels able to return to her first Scrabble tournament since the death of her friend. She wants to win in Trina's memory and earn her old title, Queen of the Tiles. But then someone starts posting on the dead girl's instagram account, taunting messages that hint that the death was a murder, and that the players might even now be in danger. Najwa does her best to unravel the events of a year before, navigating gaps in her own memory, and a tangle of the envy, hatred, admiration and love the Scrabble community had for Trina. This is an engaging, diverse, complex mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. Full of wordplay and etymology trivia.
The Anthropocene Reviewed written and read by John Green (Dutton) I started listening to the podcast of The Anthropocene Reviewed years ago- maybe late 2019 or early 2020? For me these essays are colored with the bittersweet poignancy of the early covid period, and indeed the book references covid, collective health, and vaccines regularly in essays on small pox and more. I had planned to re-listen to the whole book, but I ended up missing the lovely sound editing of the podcast version so I only ended up listening to the last 25% to hear all of the essays which were exclusive to the book ("Winter Mix" to the end). This book is my favorite of John Green's work to date, and I'd recommend it even if you've bounced off his novels.
Terry Pratchet: A Life in Footnotes: The Official Biography by Rob Wilkins (Doubleday) I've read 30+ of Terry Pratchett's 50+ books, but I didn't know very much about his life before reading this biography. I never had the pleasure of hearing him speak at a convention, or of seeing him at a signing, despite the extensive amount of touring he did from the mid-90s to the 2010s. This extensive biography was written by his long time assistant, friend, and collaborator Rob Wilkins, a huge Pratchett fan who went from working on organizing the UK Discworld conventions to working for Pratchett's agent to working for the author himself. It's funny and conversational, full of footnotes and silly asides, not unlike a Pratchett book in that regard. It takes nearly 90 pages to get through Pratchett's high school years; though to be fair, Pratchett published his first two short stories, bought his first typewriter, and attended his first few sci-fi conventions before he was out of high school. He was a tremendously dedicated worker, often writing two or more books a year once he quit his journalism and PR jobs to begin writing full time. This book is primarily about his creative work and extensive hobbies (gardening, beekeeping, raising goats and ducks, astronomy, silver-casting, brewing mead, building home electronics, playing computer games, forging his own sword) but skates lightly over his interpersonal relationships outside of professional collaborations. I did not leave it with a good sense of how his only daughter might have felt about having such a workaholic as a father, but I did leave it with a better sense of what fed and nourished his astonishing imagination, and the successes and stumbling blocks he met along the way.
Roaming by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki (Drawn and Quarterly) Zoe and Dani, high school best friends now in their first year of college at two distant and different schools, reunite for a spring break in New York City in 2009. They have five days to cram in as much sight seeing and bonding as they can. But Dani brought one of her classmates, Fiona, and this third person injects an intense new energy into the dynamic. Dani wants to visit all of the biggest tourist attractions. Zoe wants to have some adult experiences she's never had before. And Fiona? Initially she wanted to ditch the other two, but then she decides Zoe is more interesting that the people she was going to meet up with, especially after Fiona manages to buy some weed from the desk manager at their hostel and Zoe turns out to have a fake ID. This is a smart, beautifully drawn story about the painful period between being a teen and becoming an adult, the growing pains of an old friendship, the addictive pull of a new crush, the struggle to figure out who you are and want to be against the backdrop of a foreign city. Fans of previous Tamaki collaborations will love this one as well. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced reader copy; preorder it now or look for it in stores in September 2023.
Team Trash: A Time Traveler’s Guide to Sustainability by Kate Wheeler and Trent Huntington (Holiday House) A short, easy to read book on historical sustainability and recycling efforts for young readers. Two kids, Charlie and Oliver, are paired together for a science project and end up accidentally taking a time-traveling car made out of trash back in time to Pompeii, ancient Japan, early America, and more, to learn how people in different eras have handled their garbage. A fun, informative introduction to the topic for kids which includes with an example of how to contact legislators. Forthcoming in June 2023!
Babel: An Arcane History by RF Kuang (HarperCollins) I read this for my book club, and we won't be holding our discussion of it until late April, so I might come back after that with more thoughts. For now, I'll say there were aspects of this book which I really enjoyed (the focus on the damage caused by colonization, the diverse cast, the unique magic system, the Oxford setting) but also multiple ways it felt bogged down by it's own length and some of the plot decisions. I'm normally a huge fan of a quirky or educational footnote (see: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell) but in the second half I felt like the footnotes were bleeding the tension out of the action and really taking away from my reading enjoyment. I wanted more from several of the lead characters emotional arcs. I wanted the plot turns of the second half to come sooner. I wanted some of the multiple main character deaths to be given a bit more space to breath. Still, I'm glad I read this and I think it's a very thought provoking book, maybe more so because it's so far from perfect.
Victories Greater Than Death by Charlie Jane Anders, read by Hynden Walch (Tor Teen) Tina has known since she was a kid that her destiny lies beyond Earth. From the outside, she looks like a regular high schooler, someone who loves her friends, has a passionate sense of right and wrong, and never passes by an opportunity to stand up to a bully or a corrupt local business owner. But in her chest is a star beacon which will someday activate and call an alien spaceship to pick her up and return the memories of her previous life. Tina is the clone of a famous and beloved space general from the Royal Fleet and she can't WAIT to get to the business of saving people for real. But when Tina's ship and future come for her, she learns that battles are messy and fighting comes with causalities. This is the first book of a trilogy, which asks the questions: what are acceptable losses when fighting for a greater good? How far will you go to save your friends? How about a girl you just met, but are already half in love with? This series is fairly light in the realism and sci-fi world building departments, and cares about its characters maybe more than its plot, but its delightfully queer, trans, and full of heart.
Come Tumbling Down written and read by Seanan McGuire (Tor dot com) The stories that center on Jack, Jill, and the Moors continue to be some of the strongest installments in this series. In this one, Jack reappears at the school for Wayward Children- in her twin sister's body. She needs help, and she needs it fast, and despite the sign outside the school which reads "No Quests", a group of Eleanor West's students once again step through a magical door to save a world not their own.
Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore It's been a while since I read a novel all in one day! I picked this up for the Trans Rights Readathon (running on all bookish social media near you from March 20-27 2023) and I absolutely loved it. The two main characters, Bastian and Lore, are both nonbinary, both Mexican-American, and both neurodivergent. Bastian lives by the shore of a lake, the source of many myths, but only Bastian seems to be able to access the liminal, magical space beneath its surface. Until they meet Lore, who can also see the way the waves lift off the shore to become a path. But Bastian and Lore both end up pouring things into the lake they're unwilling to face- bad memories, traumas, and the hateful whispers of cruel classmates. The lake can only hold so much, and soon these painful things start flooding the shores, into the streets and homes of the teens. The only way to quiet the waters is to face what they've tried to drown. This a fast, engaging read and one of the best books about living with ADHD and dyslexia I've ever encountered. It makes me want to seek out more stories with this kind of representation, and this kind of emotional, visual language!
Self Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore Another book I finished all in one day for the Trans Right Readathon (March 20-27 2023!) This Gatsy retelling casts Nick Carraway as Nicolás Caraveo, a 17-year-old trans boy from Wisconsin. He wants to move to New York not for the glamour but because he has a head for numbers and wants to make money working on Walls Street to support his parents and establish himself as a man. His cousin Daisy finds him a cottage in West Egg, but when he reunions with Daisy he's shocked to realize she's passing as white and lying about her past to her sort-of fiancé, Tom, a man who pretends at tolerance while exhibiting casual racism. Then Nick meets his other neighbor, the infamous Jay Gatsby, who throws outrageous and extravagant parties but is more similar to Nick than most people can see. This retelling adds an insurance investigation about a missing $350,000 pearl necklace; a visit to an underground gay club; and cast full of queer characters, all trying to make some kind of safety or place for themselves in the world. I'd love to see this version added to school reading lists along side the original!
Prophet by Sin Blance and Helen Macdonald (Grove Press) At the start of this military thriller, set in 2010, a sergeant dies in a mysterious fire on a US base in the UK. Around the base, dozens of objects appear ranging from familiar, nostalgic childhood toys, to a full American style diner in the middle of an empty field. A pair of unique agents are called in to investigate these circumstances: reserved, rule following Colonel Adam Rubenstein, and chaotic Sunil Rao, unranked, pulled from rehab after an overdose attempt. Rao as the ability to spot fakes and forgeries at a glance, and also to tell when anyone is lying. Except Adam. Adam is the only person who confounds Rao's power, and the only one who can manage his unpredictable moods and whims. This unlikely team chase the threads of the mystery back to Colorado, into an experimental government lab, where they find a bizarre substance effecting people's psyches to produce physical objects linked to memory. Everyone seems to react to it in the same way... except Rao and Adam. The book is a little over long, but full of witty dialogue, very original, and the plot intrigue is underpinned by the emotional tension between the two leads, who are pulled together by curiosity, attraction, and increasingly, by real feelings. There were a few missed opportunities that I think could have ramped up the romantic stakes even farther, but still, I loved that a cautious queer romance formed the emotional core of the story.
Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me written and read by Janet Mock This candid, conversational memoir is read by the author in the audiobook and I really loved hearing it literally in her voice. Mock begins the book writing of being a freshman in college in her native Hawaii, of working briefly in a strip club as a dancer, of meeting the man who she would marry and live with on and off through her twenties, of following her academic ambition and writing skills to Rhode Island and then New York City, of friendships, boyfriends, heart breaks and career breaks. Mock pursued the goal of becoming a culture magazine editor with remarkable clear-eyed practicality and worked her way into higher and higher positions even as a recent grad. Along the way she gained confidence in herself, her place in the world, and her unique voice as a trans woman of color. She went from living stealth to deciding she wanted to share her story calmly and compassionately with the world.

James Wong Howe: Cinematographer. Innovator. By Raquel Stecher
James Wong Howe, A.S.C. was simply a visionary. Greatly admired in the business, Howe’s talents as a cinematographer were highly sought after. Over his six-decade long career, Howe worked closely with a variety of directors on productions big and small and successfully navigated his way through major industry transitions including the advent of sound, color and the widescreen format. While Howe dabbled in directing, he preferred cinematography which he considered a more creative pursuit.
He was nominated for 10 Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for films including ALGIERS (’38), ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS (’40), THE NORTH STAR (’43), SECONDS (’66) and his final film FUNNY LADY (’75). He won twice, for THE ROSE TATTOO (’55) and HUD (’63). Among his favorite films to work on were THE THIN MAN (’34), VIVA VILLA! (’34), PICNIC (’55) and THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (’58). But many, including himself, considered the pinnacle of his achievement to be HUD, a sweeping drama directed by Martin Ritt that included stunning shots of barren Texas landscape and one of the most poignant and beautifully shot endings in cinema history.
According to the TCM documentary directed by Daniel Raim, IMAGE MAKERS: THE ADVENTURES OF AMERICA'S PIONEER CINEMATOGRAPHERS (2019), Howe “practiced the art of the cinematographer as the highest form of storytelling and imbued it with his own engaging point of view.” Howe had a keen eye for expressive lighting and composition that accurately depicted the mood of any given story. He earned the nickname “Low-Key Howe” for his penchant for lighting that looked more natural on screen. In an interview, Howe said, “I like to cross light. I don’t like to have many shadows on the wall because every time you show one shadow it becomes another character. It intrudes upon the scene.” Howe taught himself deep focus, keeping the foreground, middle ground and background in focus and thus creating multi-layered shots. For Howe, the magic happened when the actors, director and cinematographer were all in sync with each other. He was insular in his training and didn’t watch many other films because he felt that inspiration should come from within.
Howe was an innovator from the very start, crafting new techniques that enhanced visuals while adding more emotional resonance to scenes. Many of Howe’s innovations were purely accidental. In his early days photographing actresses for studio portraits, he made Mary Miles Minter’s light blue eyes, which were difficult to photograph, darker by having her look at a piece of black velvet. Years later, while working on Howard Hawks’ WWII drama AIR FORCE (’43), a generator that was used for lighting stopped working. He was shooting a scene in which B-17s were landing on a burning field. He had his technicians wire flares while utilizing the headlights from the planes. The flickering lights and smoke from the flares resulted in a very dramatic shot that would not have been as effective had it been done with steady lights.
Often times his innovations involved some creative problem solving or experimentation. For Robert Rossen’s THE BRAVE BULLS (’51), Howe strapped the camera to the actors’ waist to create a unique point of view for the bullfighting sequences. According to the AFI, in order to film Ronald Colman shaking hands with himself in THE PRISONER OF ZENDA (’37), Howe used a 3X4 foot optical glass and a double whose head and shoulders were matted out with masking tape. Then he ran the film backwards and re-photographed with just Colman’s head and shoulders and everything else matted out.
For director John Cromwell’s ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS, scenes were shot utilizing the glow from torchlights, enhanced by reflectors that produced a naturally soft image. To capture the boxing sequences in Robert Rossen’s BODY AND SOUL (’47), Howe, a former boxer himself, used eight different cameras, one of which was a hand-held camera that Howe carried while squatting on roller skates while an assistant guided him around the ring for low-angle shots. To enhance the visuals on Alexander Mackendrick’s SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (’57), Howe added Vaseline to star Burt Lancaster’s thick-rimmed glasses to make them shine giving Lancaster a more menacing appearance.
Howe’s preference was to work in black-and-white. In an interview he said, “black and white is a medium you can do many things with thematically, with filters and so on. With color you’re restricted.” While working on the Technicolor film THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER (’38), he struggled to get the lighting right in the cave sequence. Howe defied Technicolor’s strict guidelines and shot the scene with less lighting than they had required. This resulted in a more natural look that producer David O. Selznick was pleased with. However, this angered Technicolor and Howe was barred from working on color films until 1949.
His mastery of black-and-white cinematography can especially be seen in his later work on films such as John Frankenheimer’s SECONDS. He employed 9mm fish-eye lens, used low f-stops and worked with the crew to create sets that appeared distorted and a bit offkilter. The black-and-white cinematography and the extreme angles ramp up the drama in this mind-bender of a film. For HUD, Ritt worried that Howe would not feel particularly inspired by mostly exterior shooting in a rather plain landscape. Ritt wanted to include more footage of clouds, but Howe saw the blank sky and open landscape as representative of the isolation the characters felt within the context of the story. The final scene was to be shot in a bedroom and was changed to an exterior shot that brilliantly captures the end of an era for the family. The door closes on the viewer just as the words “The End” appear on the screen. While we don’t know if this was Howe’s vision or Ritt’s, it does demonstrate how cinematography is key to evoking a message or theme to a viewer in an effective way.

‛ singing hey la di la di, hey la di da day. ’
‛ lincoln! here’s mud in your eye. ’

IRON MIKE.
‛ on a starry black night at the base of mount hogan, beyond horsetail creek and anderson bay. ’
‛ from the port of valdez sailed a ship, bound for long beach. ’
‛ over one million barrels of crude stowed away. ’
‛ to the left of the wheel in the bridge of the upper deck under the compass, was he. ’
‛ navigation computer, the captain and fisherman’s friend who could steer perfectly. ’
‛ they called him iron mike. ’
‛ in the dead of the night he steered the way through the darkness. ’
‛ iron mike didn’t see the red light on the reef. ’
‛ he’d been known to throw back one or two. ’
‛ yet no one thought twice when he set autopilot and retired below with the crew. ’
‛ from the two am stillness came the cry of the third mate. ’
‛ someone better go wake up the chief! ’
‛ yet by then it was too late. ’
‛ the starboard tanks had 12 foot gashes cut out by bligh reef. ’
‛ the forget-me-nots cried and the salmon all died and the fisherman wore black armbands. ’
‛ and the spokesmen from exxon said, ‘no major damage,’ though six million gallons remain in the sands. ’
‛ and from rocky point down to mount freemantle, you can still see the black film on the soil. ’
‛ and the echoes rebound throughout prince william sound of half frozen animals, choking in oil. ’
‛ who’s at the helm of this ship of state? ’
‛ we’ve in for some rough navigation. ’
‛ we have the power – the hour is late. ’
‛ gotta get tough and clean up the nation. ’
‛ black rainbows of exxon lightgrade again flowed, like hot fudge in a big apple spill. ’
‛ the detection machine had malfunctioned quite often, repair procedure so hard to enforce. ’
‛ and down on prall’s island, the cleanup begins. ’
‛ and the horror continues till we chart our own course. ’
‛ it’s the dead of the night. ’
‛ we can steer a new way through the darkness. ’
‛ we must see the light for relief. ’
FIND THE KEY.
‛ she’s walking, he’s sitting. ’
‛ he plays a dark c-minor chord. ’
‛ it’s like the keyboard is his heart. ’
‛ he hears the clock, he hugs the cat. ’
‛ he hugs the cat… no. he kicks the cat. ’
‛ he pumps the volume higher. ’
‛ a fire’s just about to start. ’
‛ why can’t, why can’t i? ’
‛ why can’t i, why can’t i find the key? ’
‛ why can’t i find the key? ’
‛ door closes – he freezes. ’
‛ he sees it’s hard to end duets. ’
‛ he lets his fingers feel the way. ’
‛ he loves her, he’s lost her. ’
‛ he’s hearing melancholy strings that sing the things that he can’t say. ’
‛ he can’t imagine what he should have said. ’
‛ it’s all been said and sounds cliché. ’
‛ he’s at the bridge between his head which says, ‘it’s dead,’ and his heart which says, ‘don’t let her get away.’ ’
‛ she’s gone now. he’s singing. ’
‛ he’s singing. he hears no two part harmony. ’
‛ he hears no two part harmony. ’
‛ he looks around – this can’t be real. ’
‛ this can’t be real. ’
‛ depression, a dark progression. ’
‛ why can he only sing it? ’
‛ what will it take to make him feel? ’
‛ and then somehow it ends. ’
HOSING THE FURNITURE.
‛ hello my lucite coffee table. someone spill a little milk on you? ’
‛ tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk. ’
‛ one – more – twist! that’s better now. ’
‛ silly little me, me, me, me, me, me, me! ’
‛ i’m singing in the living room. ’
‛ what’s the time? fifteen minutes. ’
‛ pour the bleach, put the finishing touches on the dinner. ’
‛ the dog – the dog – the dog. still outside. ’
‛ my nails! my god! a chip! ’
‛ tom likes wonder bread with turkey. ’
‛ tom was preoccupied last night. ’
‛ is it me? is it – ’
‛ do i have enough milk? ’
‛ oh stain stain, down the drain. ’
‛ i can see myself in the coffee table, pretty as i was on my wedding day. ’
‛ pretty as i was on my wedding day. ’
‛ i’m as pretty as the coffee table. we’re so pretty! ’
‛ we’re so pretty! ’
‛ ah! what? you scared me. ’
‛ who were you talking to? ’
‛ who? no one. ’
‛ what’s all this? ’
‛ why are you acting so weird? ’
‛ you know i’m hosing the furniture. ’
‛ and when i hose, i sing to myself. ’
‛ who do you think cleans up? some elf? ’
‛ no sweeping – no mops. in no time it’s wheeeeee! ’
‛ when i’m hosing the furniture i’m free. ’
‛ i’m free – i’m free! ’
‛ now run along and play – i’m concentrating. ’
‛ you know your father likes to come home to that ‘just decorated look’... ’
‛ raindrops are falling on my couch! ’
‛ what’s the time? thirty minutes! ’
‛ martinis, cut the flowers for the dinner. ’
‛ the dog – the dog – the dog. hasn’t been fed. ’
‛ my hair! my god! a gray hair! ’
‛ tom likes onion cocktails. ’
‛ tom nodded off again last night. ’
‛ i get treated like dirt! ’
‛ i can see myself in the drapery. ’
‛ am i pretty as i was on my wedding day? ’
‛ am i pretty as the drapery? are we pretty? ’
‛ are we pretty? ’
‛ don’t you care? ’
‛ do i look mad? my happiness grows! ’
‛ who needs dad when i’ve got the hose! ’
‛ this house is a reflection of me – modern, graceful, easy, simple – synthetic. ’
‛ modern, graceful, easy, simple – synthetic. ’
‛ in everything i see my reflection. ’
‛ do i really look so simply pathetic? ’
‛ what? pull the trigger! ’
‛ soon it’s gonna rain on the bookshelf. ’
‛ what’s the time? 120 minutes. ’
‛ dry turkey, look relaxed for the dinner. ’
‛ the dog – the dog – the dog. the dog died last year! ’
‛ my blouse! my god! a crumb! ’
‛ i can see myself in the television. ’
‛ i was pretty on my wedding day. ’
‛ i was pretty as a television. we were pretty. ’
‛ we were pretty. ’
‛ a minor flood never hurt anyone! ’
‛ sometimes i wish this hose were a gun. ’
‛ just joking – see, i’m laughing. ’
PURA VIDA
‛ we are the people. ’
‛ we are the people who float on the river. ’
‛ we run up to the hill, we run down to the water. ’
‛ birds laugh and the sun, she smiles. ’
‛ and the trees, they dance in the wind. ’
‛ we race against time. ’
‛ we race for pure life. ’
‛ we need the people. ’
‛ we need the people who live on the river. ’
‛ find a pace, find a speed. ’
‛ nowhere to stop in big water. ’
‛ fish fly and the rocks play games and the trees sing out in the wind. ’
‛ sing in harmony. ’
‛ can we endure this race? ’
‛ can this race endure? ’
‛ we need the people who live in the forest. ’
‛ ‘ust there be finish lines? ’
‛ can’t the world drum like the water? ’
‛ the rivers will dry, and the birds will die. ’
‛ and the ghosts of the trees will cry out in the wind. ’
THE TRUTH IS A LIE.
‛ the berlin wall wasn’t destroyed, it was dismantled brick by brick. ’
‛ it was dismantled brick by brick. ’
‛ it was dismantled brick by brick and reconstructed on capitol hill, on the congressional floor. ’
‛ the money spent on one stealth bomber couldn’t wipe out homelessness. ’
‛ george bush never said, ‘read my lips.’ ’
‛ the peace dividend didn’t pay for the war. ’

‛ the truth is a lie! ’
‛ love does not exist between consenting members of the same sex. ’
‛ two plus two is five. ’
‛ the human body is revolting. ’
‛ we always will thrive. ’

‛ they catch it like german measles. ’
‛ the moon is cheese and everyone should own a gun. ’
‛ women ask to be black and blue and pregnant their entire lives. ’
‛ the earth is flat and the white man knows what’s best for everyone. ’
‛ don’t you know what you might see? ’
‛ don’t look at the picture. don’t go to the theater. don’t you know what you will see? ’
RHAPSODY.
‛ i turn a corner, see a rat in the rubble as i try with all my might to put it out of mind. ’
‛ as i try with all my might to put it out of mind. ’
‛ i step on some budweiser glass. a limousine drives by. ’
‛ a rich man turns a corner, sees a rat in the rubble. ’
‛ he raises his smile glass window and reads the wall street journal. ’
‛ sky’s not free. river’s not free. i’m not free. life’s not free. ’
‛ life’s not free in the city. ’
‛ i’m told i too must wear a tie or they’ll fire me from my boring nothing job. ’
‛ i guess a tie is the ornament of establishment. ’
‛ i guess a tie is the ornament of establishment, though it seems to me to be more of a leash than a bow. ’
‛ though it seems to me to be more of a leash than a bow. ’
‛ so many people hounded to the pound. ’
‛ so many people collared to the dollar. ’
‛ okay, freedom is a state of mind. i agree. ’
‛ but i need the elements to remind me why. ’
‛ but i need the elements to remind me why with all this steel and concrete and noise about money. ’
‛ with all this steel and concrete and noise about money. honey, you get tunnel vision. ’
‛ honey, you get tunnel vision. ’
‛ you forget that there’s earth below the subway and beyond the ‘scrapers, there’s sky. ’
‛ i plan a day in the country with you. ’
‛ having gotten home from work last night at 12:30 am. ’
‛ having fallen asleep last night at 3:30 am because i couldn’t shut down my mind. ’
‛ because i couldn’t shut down my mind. ’
‛ the city never sleeps. ’
‛ as the phone rang this morning, your sweet was calling, i looked at that clock. ’
‛ how i hate that damn clock. ’
‛ i excuse myself from our date. ’
‛ see, i had to be back by mid-afternoon. ’
‛ and i know these are lame excuses and i’m so damn sorry. ’
‛ i’m so damn sorry. ’
‛ i know it’s important, but i feel like i’ve gotten my priorities beaten out of me. ’
‛ but i feel like i’ve gotten my priorities beaten out of me. ’
‛ but i feel like i’ve gotten my priorities beaten out of me with a rolled-up new york times. ’
‛ and this leash keeps tanking on my tie. ’
‛ i love ‘rhapsody in blue’ too. it’s just that he was rich when he wrote it. ’
‛ it’s just that he was rich when he wrote it. ’
‛ and only the rats, the roaches, the rubble and the rich men are free in the city. ’
SOS.
‛ this may be my final message. ’
‛ this may be the final bow. ’
‛ i’m sure i don’t know what will happen. ’
‛ i’m sure i don’t know what will happen. does it matter anyhow? ’
‛ does it matter anyhow? ’
‛ i hear footsteps down the hall. ’
‛ don’t know how much they’ll allow. ’
‛ if you’re waiting for the last reel, i think the time is now. ’
‛ i think the time is now. ’
‛ sos, oh, savior! ’
‛ sos, oh, hero! ’
‛ sos, messiah! ’
‛ yes, oh yes, oh! ’
‛ sos, oh jesus! ’
‛ sos, oh buddhal! ’
‛ sos, emmanuel! ’
‛ this may be my final hour. ’
‛ this may be the dying day. ’
‛ though they never taught me why in school, i think i’m learning how to pray. ’
‛ i think i’m learning how to pray. ’
‛ they are right outside the door. ’
‛ don’t know why they keep on stalling. ’
‛ i know you’ve heard this all before. ’
‛ i know you’ve heard this all before, but it’s the last time that i’m calling. ’
‛ but it’s the last time that i’m calling. ’
‛ sos, almighty! ’
‛ sos, oh yahwah! ’
‛ sos, oh mighty zeus! ’
‛ sos, oh allah! ’
‛ does anybody hear? ’
‛ does anybody hear? answer me now if you do. ’
‛ answer me now if you do. ’
‛ is anybody there? ’
‛ is anybody there? i need you. ’
‛ i need you. ’
‛ this may be the curtain call. ’
‛ does it matter anymore? ’
‛ i asked why. that’s why i say make a try. it’s only a play. ’
‛ that’s why i say make a try. ’
‛ it’s only a play. ’
LOVE HEALS.
‛ like a breath of midnight air. ’
‛ like a lighthouse, like a prayer. ’
‛ like a flicker and the flare the sky reveals. ’
‛ like a walk along the shore that you’ve walked a thousand times before. ’
‛ like the ocean roars, love heals. ’
‛ there are those who shield their heart. ’
‛ those who quit before they start. ’
‛ who’ve frozen up the part of them that feels. ’
‛ in the dark they’ve lost their sight, like a ship without a star in the night. ’
‛ but it’s alright. love heals. ’
‛ love heals when pain’s too much to bear. ’
‛ when you reach out your hand and only the wind is there. ’
‛ when life’s unfair, when things like us are not meant to be. love heals. ’
‛ when you feel so small like a grain of sand, like nothing at all. ’
‛ when you look out at the sea. that’s where love will be. ’
‛ that’s where love will be. ’
‛ that’s where you’ll find me. ’
‛ you’ll find me. ’
‛ so if you fear the storm ahead as you lie awake in bed. ’
‛ no one there to stroke your head and your mind reels. ’
‛ if your face is salty wet and you’re drowning in regret, just don’t forget. ’
‛ don’t forget. ’
‛ don’t forget love heals. ’
‛ love heals. ’
PIANO.
‛ when the world is a constant jumble and a wall or two decides to tumble. ’
‛ when i think i’m at the end of the line. ’
‛ when i think i’m at the end of the line, somehow i get to you in time. ’
‛ somehow i get to you in time. ’
‛ somehow i get through to you in time. ’
‛ oh piano, you saved my soul again. ’
‛ you saved my soul again. ’
‛ oh piano, you saved my soul, amen. ’
‛ you saved my soul, amen. ’
‛ i may not play like a concert man, but i got a song to sing. ’
‛ but i got a song to sing. ’
‛ i may not play like a concert man, but i got soul. ’
‛ but i got soul. ’
‛ piano, save my soul. ’

2020 Porsche Macan Review: Entry-Level SUV Packs a Punch
This is it. The cheapest new Porsche you can buy. The 2020 Porsche Macan starts at $52,250, including destination, a little over half what you’ll pay for a base 911 Carrera. What that gets you is a premium compact SUV powered by a 248-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a description that could equally be applied to an AWD Lincoln Corsair that’s about $12,000 cheaper. Is the Porsche badge really worth that much more?
The truth is, of course, you’re buying more than just the badge. Although it lacks the exhilarating punch of the $61,000 Macan S, this entry-level Macan retains all the other goodness of its V-6-powered sibling. As with the Macan S, the 2019 model year upgrades build on the baby Porsche SUV’s benchmark dynamics and trademark design cues to deliver improved ride comfort, lower noise levels, a state-of-the-art communications and navigation system, and simple but effective styling tweaks.
It might be the slowest, least powerful Porsche in the lineup, but the Macan still corners, steers, and stops like an SUV whose dynamics have been honed by a sports car specialist. It’s compact and wieldy, feels like it’s been machined from a billet of steel, and looks … like a Porsche.
Visual changes introduced as part of the 2019 model year refresh include a new front fascia with gaping vents either side of the grille to give the car a broader stance on the road. There’s a new rear fascia, too, along with the full-width taillight graphic that’s now a Porsche family design signature. Porsche has made 21-inch wheels available on the Macan for the first time, and there are four new exterior colors. LED headlights are standard, but new technology makes the biggest splash inside, courtesy of the 10.9-inch high-definition touchscreen in the center of the dash that provides the user interface for the Porsche Communication Management system (PCM). PCM, which made its debut in the Panamera, features beautifully rendered graphics and fast reaction times, and the screen layout can be customized several different ways.
The chassis concept is fundamentally unchanged from that of the previous model. That means multilink suspension front and rear and the choice of conventional steel springs or height-adjustable two-chamber air suspension. The front suspension components are now aluminum, however, reducing unsprung mass by 3.3 pounds and improving front axle stiffness. The optional air suspension system has optimized rolling pistons and new damping hydraulics, and the stabilizer bars have been recalibrated to deliver more neutral handling. The Macan also now follows the bigger Cayenne’s asymmetric tire strategy, the fronts slightly narrower than the rears, no matter what size wheel you order.
The seeds of doubt—is the Macan really worth Porsche money?—are sown by what’s under the hood. The 248-hp, 2.0-liter four-banger nestling there is a Porsche-massaged version of the VW Group’s versatile EA888 turbo engine, variants of which power a number of everyday Volkswagens—and some special ones, too, such as the iconic Golf GTI and the 166-mph pocket supercar that is the Golf R. It gets a new direct-injection cylinder head with centrally located injectors and makes its peak power from 5,000 rpm to 6,750 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 rpm to 4,500 rpm. On paper that’s surprisingly mid-pack, especially in the context of the 306 hp churned out by the Golf R’s version of the engine. It’s a different story on the road, though.
Let’s rewind to that AWD Lincoln Corsair: The Macan has virtually the same power and torque and weighs about 100 pounds more, but it’s a full second quicker to 60 mph. The Porsche’s headline output numbers are only part of the story; what’s more important is how they’re deployed. Peak torque arrives much earlier than in the Lincoln and hangs on for 1,500 more revs, while peak power arrives 500 revs sooner and continues to be developed 1,250 rpm after the Lincoln’s engine has begun to run out of breath.
Working in conjunction with the slick, efficient, responsive seven-speed PDK transmission, the Macan’s engine thus punches above its weight. Selecting Sport mode delivers crisper throttle response and allows the transmission to hold a lower gear even when you lift off, helping the Porsche feel more alert in traffic or on a winding two-lane. Use the paddles, and the Macan can be hustled from point to point with the neatness of a hot hatch, though the rear-biased torque split gives it the balance of a sports car. And with less weight over the front axle than its V-6-powered sibling, the Macan feels just a touch more alert the moment you turn the steering wheel.
Our tester was fitted with more than $13,500 worth of extras, not hard to do given Porsche’s extensive—and expensive—options list. Some, like heated front seats ($530) and auto dimming mirrors ($420), should really be standard equipment on a $52,250 vehicle. Even charging extra for partial leather trim ($1,740) at this price point seems egregious.
You can quibble over color choice ($750 for anything other than black or white, though the Carmine Red, Chalk, and Miami Blue special colors from the Porsche 911 palette will cost you $3,120) and whether you want wheels bigger than the standard 18-inch units; the cheapest 19-inch wheel is $1,660, and the cheapest 20-incher an eye-watering $4,200. But one option definitely worth considering is the height-adjustable air suspension ($2,750), which adds a syrupy layer of compliance to the tightly controlled body motions, no matter which wheel/tire combination you choose to fit.
It may have less motor than the six-cylinder Macan S, but this four-cylinder Macan doesn’t feel less of a Porsche. It’s merely a slower one: 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds versus 5.1 seconds, according to Porsche, with a top speed of 142 mph versus 157 mph. You get bigger front brakes (360mm versus 34 mm) and 19-inch wheels and tires as standard on the Macan S. But unless you’re always hustling along canyon roads, where the six-cylinder version’s superior midcorner throttle adjustability and greater punch on corner exit are immediately noticeable, you’re basically spending an extra $8,500 to save a tick of the clock you won’t notice and get an extra 15 mph you can’t use. In this context, the Porsche Macan makes sense.
Besides, Porsche and four-cylinder Volkswagen engines have a long history together. Right back to the beginning, in fact.

DK How Machines Work: Zoo Break
Written and Illustrated by David Macauley
Published by Penguin Random House
2015
Won the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize
American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award for Writing for Children (2016)
Meet Sloth and Sengi, two zoo animals who are bored with captivity. In this ingenious introduction to simple machines, kids can use pop up components to conduct hands-on-experiments and engage in scientific inquiry while they help the main characters escape.
The characters in the story experiment with creating different devices to free themselves, first trying to wedge open a door, then trying to get over the fence with a lever and even later, building a flying machine! This problem and solution structure is enhanced by the hands-on attributes and allows children to extrapolate, asking questions and running their own experiments with Sengi and Sloth.
This book is directed toward children in grades 2-5. That is about right. The introduction of the manipulative elements will attract children in the younger grades who need a kinesthetic experience in order to grasp how these machines work. Here, readers can use a pop-out plank and a pop-up fulcrum to build a simple lever and pop Sengi and Sloth over the fence.

And the American Institute of Physics reported that “Readers interact with the characters and the different types of simple machines. We especially liked the pop-up and removable interactive components in this book, which can be used to introduce children to basic physics and engineering principles or to introduce inquiry science lessons involving simple machines.”
This interactive narrative non-fiction picture book meets the criteria for non-fiction in the way only David Macauley can. The organizational structure is simple and easy to navigate. Big headings in the top corners of each page like “Inclined to Escape” on page 4 introduces scientific vocabulary children need to know. The heading is followed by expository text and the language is sophisticated, geared toward the older readers in grades 4-6.
“An inclined plane is essentially a sloped surface. It makes climbing easier by making the climb less steep. Even though the distance is increased, the effort needed is much less.”
A full-bleed glossary is included on pages 28-29 in case readers need clarification about these terms.
While the language and the story are a key component for the reader it is the pictures and layout that really make this book effective for a wide variety of readers. Information is delivered in small chunks across richly illustrated pages. Small circles and squares are set out from the text and contain illustrations that offer close up details for the reader to analyze such as on page 20 when the concept of a screw is explained in words and pictures. An oval inset shows how to wrap a length of hose around a stick, taking advantage of the qualities of the inclined plane to make an Archimedes Screw that moves water. The simple illustration makes the complicated concept clearer.
The illustrations are whimsical, with lots of little lines to demonstrate detail and movement and a muted palette of colors, greens and greys and browns that keep the busy pages from becoming overwhelming.
Photo: Hadley Roberts, (2019)
The other reason I love this book is the subtle payoff kids get from lifting flaps and digging deeper into the content. On the page about the Archimedes screw, the name Archimedes is only found by lifting up a flap that looks like Sloth. Inside a fold-out explains how screw pumps have been found throughout history, designed by Archimedes but also possibly found in Babylon.
On the page before a similar flap uses tiny pictures to explain exactly how fluid functions in a hydraulic pump.
The simple text reads “Fluid is pumped from the top of the hydraulic cylinder. The piston is shortened by the fluid which moves the boom down.” Arrows guide the reader through the process, offering further visual clues, even though the language is fairly simple and the glossary exists to clear up the more complex terms.
Yet another booklet explains gears. And in this one, a subtle background of graph paper lends a feel of authority and a dash of the engineering environment to the concept.
But the characters of Sloth and Sengi lend whimsy and fun to the serious concepts. Sight gags like Sloth explaining that he’s “not cut out for this” while he is pictured sawing a board adds age-appropriate humor to the mix.
The characters are pretty flat, They have simple personalities. Sengi is the brainy one who always innovates and Sloth is the funny, one but this is done intentionally so that the reader doesn’t get too wrapped up in the narrative and instead focuses on the machines and their own interactive role in the story.
The book culminates with Sengi masterminding a major build, a complex machine that combines all the elements discussed throughout the book. The foldout drawing of Sengi’s machine is enormous, About two feet by one and a half feet. It uses numbered arrows to direct the reader and though it lacks text this encourages the reader to think carefully about each aspect of this giant device.
This book would be a great addition to a center in a classroom and could be further enhanced with the edition of a table full of objects, Keva planks, twine, pulleys, cardboard and pegs, sticks, and Lincoln logs that could be used to extend the play this book encourages.
Books to pair with this include:
Gizmos and Gadgets: Creating Science Contraptions That Work (And Knowing Why)
by Jill Frankel Hauser
Williamson Books, Nashville Tennessee
1999
This is an older book but science never goes out of style. An activity book with instructions for 50 working contraptions to play with. I love this book because it uses simple everyday objects to explain science concepts, like on page 32 “You can learn a lot about friction by exploring the soles of footgear. Check out these shoes and think about their uses: basketball shoes, hiking shoes, cleated shoes for baseball and soccer, ballet slippers, rain boots, and skates.”
The black and white illustrations are simple and easy to follow. An index and back matter suggest more books to turn to for ideas.

The Frank Einstein Series
Author: John Scieszka

Publisher: Penguin Random House
Science-tinged fiction for the 7-10 set
Kid inventor Frank Einstein and his two robots, Klink and Klank mix science, adventure, and slapstick into this entertaining set of six books.
For older kids who are exploring these concepts this YA biographical fiction about Archimedes sounds like a snorer. but it is really not!The Sand Reckoner by Gillian Bradshaw is worth a look! I read for two days straight and couldn’t put it down.

OPERA / 2018-2019
THE ME I WANT TO SING
STUDENT GUIDE
Created and written by Tom Minter Originally commissioned by the Washington National Opera Roderick C. Demmings, Jr., piano Christine Lyons, soprano Laree "Ree" Simon, soprano
School show: April 11
Teacher and Parent Guide: The Me I Want to Sing
“If you have a purpose in which you can believe, there’s no end to the amount of things you can accomplish.” —Marian Anderson
“Believe: I am here and you will know that I am the best and will hear me.” —Leontyne Price
So, What’s Going On?
Filmmaker Jordan Peele; playwrights August Wilson and Suzanne Lori Parks; actor and producer Viola Davis; Hip Hop theater star Daveed Diggs; ballerina Misty Copeland—we can find respected African American performers in every field of the performing arts. But as the show The Me I Want to Sing makes clear, that wasn’t always the case. In fact, performers of color still face obstacles and hostility related to race and prejudice, as can be readily viewed in the online trolling they face. Compared to their predecessors, though, they are less likely to encounter the institutional barricades between their talents and opportunities to share them.
These opportunities did not spring from thin air. They are the fruits of seeds planted by previous generations of African American artists and their communities. Awareness of social challenges and struggles overcome by past artists of color provides historical and cultural context to what we now see onstage and onscreen, and listen to on our playlists. Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price stand as two twentieth-century artistic titans who sang their way across America’s color lines, specifically in the realm of classical music and opera.
In music, images, and anecdotes, The Me I Want to Sing dramatizes the musical and historical journey these two women of color navigated. They consciously created and opened the doors for the unique voices and artistry that have followed—a hard-won prize that today is often easy to overlook.
Who’s Who
These brief biographical profiles of Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price provide historical context to their lives and achievements.
Caption: Marian Anderson (center) as a young woman.
Born in Philadelphia, Marian Anderson (1897–1993) was singing in her church choir by the age of six. Her family supported her musical talents but they could not afford formal lessons. She refused to let that stop her, practicing and developing her talents largely on her own. Her church family later raised some $500—a large sum at the time—to allow her to train with voice teacher Giuseppe Boghetti. She subsequently won a contest through the New York Philharmonic Society and gained more notice. In 1928, she performed in Carnegie Hall and afterward toured Europe, winning international accolades.
Caption: Marian Anderson performing in concert.
Anderson returned to the United States regularly to perform, making a point to sing for African American audiences, including concerts in the deeply segregated South. After being denied the right to sing at a Washington, D.C. concert hall because of her race, she performed in front of 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in March 1939. That event is viewed as one of the seminal moments of the mounting Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, she became the first African American vocalist to perform with the Metropolitan Opera. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy honored Anderson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s top civilian award. She retired in 1965, but was named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1978 and received a Grammy® Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1991.

Leontyne Price (b.1927) was born and raised in Laurel, Mississippi, a small city in the Deep South. At age nine, she and her mother attended a concert by Marian Anderson, a moment that helped her begin to envision a future as a classical vocalist. She attended college in Ohio with the idea of becoming a teacher, but her teachers encouraged her to pursue vocal studies. She subsequently enrolled at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City where she earned a scholarship. In the early 1950s, Price took part in European and American tours, including a tour of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, performing the lead role of Bess.
Caption: Leontyne Price appeared in Tosca on NBC Opera Theatre. Because Price was black, the broadcast was banned in many southern states.
Price doubted her ability to make a career in opera, but the opera world already had taken note of her talent. In 1955, she appeared before a national audience via television, performing the lead in Puccini’s Tosca on NBC Opera Theater. From then on, she was in constant demand and crisscrossed the Atlantic for recitals and opera engagements, including her first turns in what would become her signature role in Aida. Her debut at the Met came on January 27, 1961, in Verdi’s Il Trovatore. Over the next three decades, she mixed opera appearances with concerts and recitals, her reputation as one of the all-time greats continuing to grow. Named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1980, she retired from opera in 1985 and gave her last recital in 1997.

Some Context: Breaking the Color Line in America
In 1896, the United States Supreme Court ruled on Plessy v. Ferguson, a legal case that challenged racial segregation on public transportation. The Justices ruled 7-1 that keeping the races separate was just fine, as long as the facilities were equal. To the surprise of few people of any color, most white Americans were happy to do the “separate” while ignoring the “equal.” “Separate but equal,” white supremacy, and Jim Crow—policies and laws meant to keep African Americans from voting or exercising other legal rights—were the de facto laws of the land. African Americans faced a particularly cruel social climate in the first half of the twentieth century. Lynching was a common atrocity in the Deep South, and keeping black families out of white neighborhoods and schools was standard practice in most every American city—South, North, East, or West.
Meanwhile, African Americans served with distinction in both World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). They worked, paid taxes, and contributed to communities. Nevertheless, they remained second-class citizens in public, private, economic, and legal spheres.
Having proven their loyalty and life-sacrificing dedication to a country that had a tradition of abusing them, African Americans grew increasingly impatient with empty promises of liberty, equality, and patience. As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, black performing artists played leading roles in breaking color lines and demonstrating again and again that the African American experience was an essential part of the American story. Artists like Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, and others became increasingly visible in the different performing arts and other realms of American society.
This timeline of the twentieth century includes some major “firsts” as more African Americans took their rightful place in America’s public spaces.
Year Milestone 1910 The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) publishes the first issue of The Crisis, “a quarterly journal of civil rights, history, politics and culture…” It is considered the oldest publication of its kind, and is still in print today. Many of the best-known African American writers have published in the magazine. 1918 The “New Negro Movement” arises after World War I. The social, cultural, literary, and artistic movement becomes better known as “The Harlem Renaissance.” 1919 Oscar Micheaux releases his first film, The Homesteader, based on his novel. Micheaux is recognized as the first African American filmmaker. 1928 Blackbirds of 1928 opens on Broadway. The all-African American musical revue becomes a big hit with multiracial audiences. 1935 The opera Porgy and Bess, featuring classically trained African-American vocalists, premieres on Broadway. 1940 Hattie McDaniel is the first African American to win an Academy Award® for her supporting role in Gone with the Wind. 1946 Playing for the Los Angeles Rams, Kenny Washington becomes the first African American in the National Football League. 1947 Jackie Robinson breaks the color line in Major League Baseball and becomes a star for the Brooklyn Dodgers. 1948 President Harry Truman ends segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces with Executive Order 9981. 1949 William Grant Still is the first African American composer to have his work, The Troubled Island, produced by a major opera company in the United States—the New York City Opera. 1950 For her role in South Pacific, Juanita Hall becomes the first African American to win a Tony® Award on Broadway as Best Featured Actress in a Musical. 1950 Poet and author Gwendolyn Brooks wins a Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry, Annie Allen. She is the first African American to win the prestigious writing award. 1955 In the case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, the U.S. Supreme Court rules the segregation of public schools is unconstitutional. 1959 Jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie win two Grammy® Awards each at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony. 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act. This sweeping law prohibits the segregation of public accommodations like hotels and restaurants across the United States. 1977 The miniseries Roots—based on the book by Alex Haley—airs on national television. Watched by a record number of Americans, the show dramatizes the story of the enslaved African named Kunta Kinte and his descendants. 1986 The Oprah Winfrey Show becomes a nationally syndicated talk show. Over time, Winfrey develops into a beloved public figure and top media mogul. 1993 Author Toni Morrison wins the Nobel Prize in Literature for her novel, Beloved. She is the first African American to win the international prize. 1996 George Walker becomes the first African American composer to win a Pulitzer Prize for music for his composition, “Lilies for Soprano or Tenor and Orchestra.”
Think about…
How the accomplishments of Marian Anderson opened opportunities for Leontyne Price. Who are other “trailblazers” you know of, from the past or present day? What role do they play in changing the status quo? What role have they played in your life?
Anderson and Price’s identities as African American women affected their careers in ways big and small. How does identity affect people’s opportunities today? How does your identity affect your ideas about your life’s path?
Let’s Talk Terms
Art Song is a genre of vocal music usually sung with piano accompaniment in a recital setting.
Classical Music technically refers to a period of European music that lasted roughly from 1750 to 1800. The music of this era will rarely feel too passionate or too emotional. In fact, it sounds balanced and even. For example, if a musical phrase has gone from a low note to a high note, odds are it will be answered by a phrase that moves from high back to low.
Contralto describes the lowest range for a female singing voice. Marian Anderson sang contralto.
Opera is a style of theater in which the story unfolds almost entirely through song. It is distinct from musical theater which relies to a greater extent on acting and dialog.
Segregation is the policy of legally separating white and black races specifically in the American South by requiring them to use separate (nearly always inferior) facilities, such as water fountains, schools, and transportation.
Soprano describes the highest range of singing voice. Leontyne Price sang soprano.
Spirituals are religious songs associated with African American Christian churches. They often combine elements of European hymns and African musical traditions.

Change Keeps Up and Coming
African Americans have continued to expand their presence in classical music and opera. Here are a handful of current stars you might want to get to know:
Lawrence Brownlee, Tenor Named 2017 “Male Singer of the Year” by the International Opera Awards. lawrencebrownlee.com
Angela Brown, Soprano A top international performer, singer of African-American spirituals, and creator of the funny and insightful outreach program “Opera…From a Sistah’s Point of View.” angelambrown.com
Alyson Cambridge, Soprano An award-winning vocalist performing and recording in multiple genres, as well as devoting time and energy to the development of young classical artists. www.alysoncambridge.com/
Jonathan Bailey Holland, Composer Composing music that incorporates classical, jazz, and Hip Hop. jonathanbaileyholland.com
Roderick Cox, Conductor Conducting orchestras on the international stage. roderickcox.com/about

Think about…
Ways Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price advocated for themselves, their dreams, their careers, and the African American community. Can you think of an instance when you pushed through obstacles in order to achieve something important to you?
How at the age of nine, Leontyne Price was moved by hearing Marian Anderson perform and felt inspired to pursue her own dreams of singing. Have you ever felt inspired by the performance or actions of another person to pursue a purpose?
How Anderson, Price, and other artists of color have had to learn to code-switch. Code-switching is the ability to translate, adjust, and move between cultures and sub-cultures in terms of dress, behavior, and language while retaining your values and, basically, who you really are. Imagine Leontyne Price’s social journey from the small segregated city of Laurel, Mississippi, to the greatest concert halls of Europe and America. To go deeper into the concept of code-switching, check out a young woman’s personal experience and take:
youtube
In 1939, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the Daughters of the American Revolution when the organization would not allow Marian Anderson to perform at Constitution Hall. Ultimately, support from the White House led to a Marian Anderson concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. What are helpful roles for us to play in supporting others who face unfair treatment?
Take Action: You Can Get It
“I think of [creating] in terms of empowerment,” says The Me I Want to Sing playwright Tom Minter. “Not just seeing ourselves in the way things are, but taking action to create things the way we want them to be. Empowerment already happens in our lives, even in incredibly small things. Empowerment is: being five years old, and you’re wanting something, and your parent or caregiver says, ‘It’s right over there. You can get it yourself.’ The moment you go and get it yourself you are empowered.”
Minter sees opportunities for empowerment all around us. Think of something you want or need, big or small, that requires some planning and effort. Then compose a written plan with concrete steps and a time frame to achieve it. If you choose, share it with family and friends.
One more thing: Show Your Support As young women, hearing music and attending performances changed the lives of Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price. Go to a concert, musical, play, or other performance at your school or in your community. Think about the role the performing arts play in your life, and in the lives of young performers and their audiences. And if you aren’t already participating, consider getting involved.
Get Your Creativity On
Heroes in Words, Images, and Sound Name a historical or contemporary figure you draw inspiration from. Using The Me I Want to Sing as a model, write the script for a short one-person play in which that person reflects on his or her life and life lessons learned. Pull images from the Web and add music if you’d like to help tell the story and create a Prezi or other multimedia presentation. (See “How to Make a Prezi”; instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Prezi/)
Directional Update In her autobiography, published in 1956, Marian Anderson wrote: “Not everyone can be turned away from meanness and hatred, but the great majority of Americans (are) heading in (the right) direction. I have great belief in the future...” Write Ms. Anderson a letter, offering an update on the direction the country is heading today in terms of social improvements and ongoing challenges.
Code-Switch What does code-switching mean to you? (Code-switching can be between cultures, economic classes, religions, sexualities, or involve other aspects of identity.) When are times you have code-switched in order to communicate and get along with others? Draw, paint, or create a collage that illustrates how you understand and practice code-switching in your life. Or write a story or script that illustrates the peril and humor of code-switching gone awry.

My sister Cynthia saying goodbye to Babcia before the trip to California, 1966. That’s me in the back, ready to go!
Road Trip to Tahiti
How does one drive from Michigan to Tahiti? It all starts with a car trip from Michigan to San Francisco, then a plane to Papeete, then a ship all the way back. Not sure how long we’ll be gone. I’m so excited for the adventure.
I’m not sure where I got this wandering sprit from. It’s a curiosity about people in other places. Their food, living conditions, opinions interest me. The wonders of this earth also fascinate me. For some reason, I actually enjoy the transportation experience. Planes, trains, ships, even car trips. Bring it on! Security lines, ticket booths, researching, lines, it’s all okay with me. When I was young, going up on Sirron Street in Detroit, I never imagined that I’d someday be able to travel around the world like I do. I knew no one who traveled, certainly not my family. We took trips to attend weddings in South Bend, IN and Saginaw MI, that’s about it.
Once, while my parents were still together, we drove up to an old hotel that an Uncle I never heard of had in the UP of Michigan. It was on this trip that my Dad instilled a fear of bridges. We crossed the Mighty Mackinaw Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Dad was driving in the center of the bridge where the rumble strips make a terrible noise. he exclaimed “watch out, I think the bridge is falling apart”, or something like that. i was terrified! I thought we’d end up in the cold waters of Lake Superior soon enough. I think I was down on the floor in the back seat of the car, since that was way before seat belts. I’ve driven over the bridge many times since then, and in very bad weather conditions. I know that those “rumble strips” provide traction in the winter. Why my Dad felt he needed to drive that way in the summer is beyond me. It can get very windy…maybe he really was just trying to be safe?
When my Mother finally declared her independence from my Dad I was about 13. Another uncle I’d never heard of, Robert Kulpanowski had moved to California, changed his name to Bob Cowan, and now owned a Cadillac dealership. Somehow, my Mother made arrangements with him to drive a new Cadillac from the Motor City to Oakland CA. My Mom, showing a sign of adventure I’d never seen, piled 3 young kids into the car and we set off for California;. I remember driving to the bar she then owned to say goodby to my Grandmother. She cried as we hugged and wondered why we had to do such a thing. Drive all the way across the country? She felt my Mother was crazy- and maybe she was.
The trip was long, but the the greatest thing! My Mom must have lost her mind a few times as the three of us fought, yelled, cried, laughed uncontrollably ,counted license plates, and colored in the car. Some of the highlights were Mom jumping the median in downtown Chicago to get on the right road, the drawing of the purple pig my little brother named for my sister Cynthia, and all the maps!!! We had gone to AAA to get the “trip-tic”, the guide books, and so many maps. I was the navigator on this trip. I learned all about maps, routings, and how to find motels with pools for the night. We had no set plan, no reservations, we just drove. I didn’t know, as we were driving along Route 66 that we were taking the “dream vacation” of so many people. Our route was now “historic” Route 66!
Saturday Feb. 16, 2019
The car is packed, the checklist was checked and goodbyes were said.I was up before the alarm checking the road conditions. We originally planned to go via I-80 which is the shortest route from Michigan to San Francisco. Watching the live web cam at the Donner Pass in the Rocky Mountains forced me to change my mind. It would have been a route I’ve never taken. White knuckling it through the northern part of the mountains didn’t appeal to me this AM. I left behind the trip tic, the AAA books, and most of the maps and used the computer to reroute us heading south. Tom thinks I’m making a mistake, adding on time to the trip. I’d rather drive longer in better conditions.
Conditions were fine for the first day. We drove to Springfield IL, the home of Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is located here. I’ve never visited a Presidential Library, and Tom is a big Lincoln fan.
Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019
We woke to our car being covered in a sheet of ice. Tom broke through it as I walked our dog Dylan around. The weather report said the morning roads were going to be bad. That made our decision to visit the Lincoln Museum even smarter. We packed Dylan into her airline carrier and took her into the museum. With the weather being so bad, we were two of very few people there. Dogs are not allowed, but they looked the other way as we carried her in.
The museum had some incredible figures. Not wax, but great detail. We took a family photo with the Lincolns. The museum led us through the story of Abe’s youth to his death. The set up was incredible. We walked through his boyhood home, his presidential campaigns, the Lincoln White House, and finally, his body laying in state at the Springfield Capitol. It’s defiantly worth a trip for history buffs. We enjoyed the movies and the exhibits. There was a special exhibit dedicated to the Kennedy Presidency with some great photos.
One of Tom’s ancestors, Hannibal Hamlin from Maine was Lincoln’s first running mate. We learned Lincoln had never met Hannibal when the party recommended him as VP. There was a Lincoln-Hamlin campaign flag on display. Old Hannibal only lasted one term, as Lincoln chose Andrew Johnson as his running mate the second time. I guess Hannibal went back to Maine? Whatever happened to him, his statue did end up at the US Capitol in the Hall of Whispers. When we visited D.C., Tom thought Hannibal resembled his Uncle Arthur.
It was interesting to learn, and see the paper clippings, of how so many people didn’t like lLincoln, especially during his first term. There were a lot of haters out there. The media was cruel to him and his family. The Emancipation Proclamation was debated as not doing enough, or doing too much, and actually very few slaves were set free by it. The Dread Scott case had resulted in slaves being classified as property. No Southerner wanted to surrender any of their property. Many of the slaves that did manage to be freed, joined the Northern Army because they had no place else to go. When Lincoln was killed, only then did he become a hero and a legion.
Leaving Lincoln behind, we headed to Hannibal MO for lunch. The town full of Mark Twain references was a little slow on this cold winter Sunday. We had lunch with locals at Becky Thatchers diner. Down on main street, most of the shops were closed.
We made it to Salina KS for the night. I’m happy to report there are plenty of dog friendly hotels to chose from one the way. Most of the places I’m finding are in the Wyndham Collection of hotels. Our first night was at a Microtel, and in Salina, we stayed at a AmericInn. Both were large comfortable rooms with microwaves and refrigerators . We didn’t bring Dylans’s crate since we are flying home…so she has been sleeping at the foot of our bed on her blanket.

How to Price a 2020 Lincoln Corsair Luxury SUV Beyond $60,000 (and a Similar Audi, BMW, or Mercedes)
Lincoln is currently riding high off a strong one-two SUV punch, having successfully launched the redesigned full-size Navigator last year and seeing critical approval of the resurrected mid-size Aviator model. Now the American luxury brand has turned its attention to the compact SUV formerly known as the MKC. All-new for 2020, that crossover now goes by the cool-sounding “Corsair” name and, based on our first impressions, is an altogether more competitive product than the MKC it replaces. It’s also a hell of a lot more expensive when fully loaded—like, more-than-its-competitors expensive.
To see show you how much more money it’ll take to buy a top-end 2020 Corsair versus an equivalent 2019 MKC, we hit Lincoln’s online Corsair configurator and threw every available option at it. It’s worth noting that the Corsair is currently offered in only Standard and Reserve trim levels, while the old MKC could be had in Standard, Select, Reserve, and bougie Black Label trims. Since we were aiming for maximum cost here, that meant lining up a 2019 MKC Black Label against the 2020 Corsair Reserve. With every available option, the Corsair stickers for nearly $10,000 more than the similarly loaded MKC. Here’s how:
We skipped right past the entry-level Corsair Standard, which is priced reasonably for the segment (at $37,585 to start) for the fancier Reserve trim, which starts at $44,270. In addition to the Standard’s list of, ahem, standard equipment (heated, power-adjustable front seats; a 4G LTE data connection with onboard Wi-Fi; LED exterior lighting; and a full complement of active safety gear), the Reserve brings extras like navigation, 19-inch wheels, and a super-swank Revelo audio system.
To that one must opt for the available 280-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, which replaces the base 250-hp 2.0-liter engine and adds $6740 to the bottom line. That’s a lot of cheese, mostly because the engine requires adding all-wheel drive and the Reserve I package and its ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, self-parking feature, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, and a 360-degree parking camera.
But wait, there’s more! What you really need is the $11,540 Reserve II package, which adds to the Reserve I stuff an adaptive suspension system (which in our experience delivers a pillowy ride quality and secure handling on twisty roads) and leather-wrapped front seats with 14 additional power-operated adjustments. Maximum cost requires you to also select the $1,600 Reserve Appearance Package, the $600 Beyond Blue Interior Package (blue-colored everything inside!), $1,700 head-up display (which is actually quite large and useful), and $695 Flight Blue paint (gotta match the interior). Going all-in on the option sheet results in nearly $17,000 in extras, elevating the 2020 Lincoln Corsair Reserve’s sticker price to a dizzying $61,255.
That’s a lot of money for not a lotta Lincoln (it’s only a compact SUV!). Sure, Lincoln’s styling and quality continue to improve, and the gap between it and European rivals is closing. Based on our first drive in the 2020 Corsair, the crossover is mostly lovely and deserving of its more aspirational pricing (the car we evaluated was just over $60,000, too). Only one hitch: The Corsair now costs more than a similarly loaded four-cylinder Audi Q5, BMW X3, or Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, all of which are priced around $55,000. And while Lincoln doesn’t offer a larger or more powerful engine option beyond the Corsair’s 280-hp 2.3-liter four, its European competitors do. In fact, you can buy the 349-hp Audi SQ5, 382-hp BMW X3 M40i, or 362-hp Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 for the same money you’d spend on this Corsair. Forget a one-two punch—Lincoln’s SUVs are now swinging for the gut.

Chevrolet Brings Tech to Its New 2021 Suburban and Tahoe SUVs
2021 Chevrolet Suburban Tahoe rollout Dec19
DETROIT – America’s oldest vehicle nameplate, the Chevrolet Suburban, advanced to its twelfth generation Tuesday night with significant changes. Switching to an independent rear suspension (IRS – no, not the tax people) lowers the rear floor for more cargo and legroom. More driver/safety assists were added, technology was enhanced, and the cockpit gets up to five big displays. As Chevy adds more sensors that create more data, GM upped compute power so the vehicle is capable of processing 4.5 terabytes of sensor and infotainment data per hour, a 5X improvement. For those who want an improvement in mpg, a diesel will be offered along with two gasoline V8s.
Chevy also rolled out the Suburban’s regular-large-size sibling, the Chevrolet Tahoe that is the better seller. The Tahoe is now 211 inches long where the extra-large Suburban is 226 inches. The same features set applies to Tahoe. These are 2021 models that ship mid-year 2020. Expect to see the same changes applied to the GMC variants, the Yukon and Yukon XL, in the near future.
2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is the normal length for a full-size SUV at 204 inches, or 17 feet, exactly. The Suburban is 224 inches with a big cargo bay but can be awkward to drive in tight spaces.
30 Safety Features on Tap
Chevrolet cites 30 safety and driver convenience features standard or available. It cites a restraint system with driver inboard seat-mounted side-impact airbag, an HD rear vision camera, automatic emergency braking, automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, rear parking sonar, automatic headlamp control, and hitch guidance for trailering. Optional are an HD surround camera system, rear pedestrian alert, lane change alert with slide blind zone alert (including trailer), lane departure warning/lane keep assist, and a head-up display (HUD) with a huge 15-inch perceived size.
The safety features spill over to convenience features for trailering enthusiasts: nine camera views, stored trailer towing profiles for a big trailer/small boat trailer/work trailer, trailer tire pressure monitoring, and blind-spot detection that includes the trailer’s length. Chevrolet did not mention a cool camera feature in the General Motors stable of technologies, the transparent trailer rear camera view, which mounts a rear camera on the back of the trailer, then stitches the view inside the vehicle’s rear camera and puts it the center stack display as if the vehicle camera had X-ray vision.
The cabins of the Suburban and Tahoe define the term “spacious.”
Six Trim Lines: Choices, Choices
Center stack display is now 10 inches.
The Suburban and Tahoe allow the buyer to have a near-infinite set of model variants (trim lines), engines, paint colors, and options. The lineup runs, from around $50K to $70K, plus options and packages, this way: LS, LT, RST, Z71 (off-roading), Premier, and High Country. The Premier focuses on safety and technology, Chevy says:
Premier adds features such as Magnetic Ride Control, navigation, an eight-inch-diagonal reconfigurable instrument cluster, premium Bose 10-speaker audio system, 12-way power vented and perforated front bucket seats, power releases for both rows of rear seats, heated steering wheel, Safety Alert Seat (vibrating seat warnings from the vehicle sensors), Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Front and Rear Park Assist and 20-inch wheels.
Some of the safety features are offered on lower trim lines. It will be interesting to see if Chevy makes more of them standard to keep up with higher levels of standard driver assists on less costly vehicles not in the Suburban/Tahoe competitive set. For example, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan – the polar opposite of the Suburban – makes every imaginable driver assist feature standard on all but the entry trim line, which lacks only blind spot detection. On the flip side, the near-universal presence of onboard telematics and mayday calling (OnStar) on GM cars for two decades may have convinced makers such as Hyundai to do the same.
Upscale models can have magnetic ride shock absorbers and air springs. On a comparison ride at GM’s Milford, Michigan test track, prototype Suburbans felt more composed on bumps and expansion strips than its nearest competitor, the Ford Expedition with its uplevel suspension, which didn’t have air springs.
Rear-sear occupants can get 12-inch infotainment displays. Placed on the backs of the front seats, they can be seen from rows two and three.
Five Big Displays Including Rear Infotainment
Big SUVs are meant for long-distance cruising, and passengers want to be entertained along the way. The Suburban/Tahoe can have up to five big displays. The standard 10-inch center stack display “is the largest in its segment,” Chevy notes, although on a car this roomy, a 12-incher will be needed to match the competition shortly. An 8-inch instrument cluster LCD (multi-information display) is optional. So, too, are optional dual 12.6-inch rear-seat infotainment displays that have HDMI connectors to accept or cast media. Rear seat passengers can use the infotainment system to look up destinations and send them to the navigation system.
The fifth display is the big HUD that is truly useful for providing lots of information – lane departure, following distance, speed, speed limit – without getting in the driver’s sight. The 15-inch diagonal refers to the perceived size of the display as if it were a physical display at the end of the hood.
The Tahoe and Suburban accounted for 42 percent of full-size-SUV sales last year. The midsize, unibody Ford Explorer, 5 inches shorter than Tahoe, is a better seller, while the Tahoe and Silverado are more profitable per vehicle sold.
Chevy, GM Own the Big SUV Business
Shifter is now buttons next to the center stack display.
The market for big SUVs was about 400,000 units last year, 2.3 percent of the 17.3 million vehicles sold. It would be higher but for the price. A lot of people would love something that roomy inside, were it not for the price that can push $80,000, or even more for the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.
The stretched Suburban (15 inches longer than Tahoe) is the one to get if you plan to haul the luggage a family of up to eight would want to stow on long trips. Although Chevrolet notes that the independent rear suspension is a big deal for cabin comfort. The seats in the third row no longer sit just a few inches off the floor, and there’s more luggage room as well. It’s just that 226 inches is a lot to get into a perpendicular or parallel parking spot or fit into a garage.
In conjunction with a slightly longer wheelbase (116 to 121 inches on the Tahoe) and length (204 to 211 inches on Tahoe), rear legroom jumps from 39 to 42 inches (a lot), third-row legroom increases from 25 to 35 inches, and cargo room behind the third row goes from 15 to 26 cubic feet. On the Suburban, wheelbase climbs from 130 to 134 inches, length from 224 to 226 inches, legroom increases 39 to 42 and 35 to 37 inches, and cargo capacity goes from 39 to 41 cubic feet or, with all seats folded, from 122 to 145 cubic feet. That’s also a lot.
The Suburban/Tahoe duo are both based on the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck introduced in summer 2018. The Silverado sold 586,000 vehicles last year, second only to Ford F-Series among the 280 vehicle models on the market last year. The full-size pickups and SUVs are Chevy’s most profitable vehicles, so a lot of attention goes into keeping them up to date.
