Cars For Sale: South Africa’s Best

A bit of a throwback, but herewith are the semi-finalists of the 2019/20 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank.

The awards programme recognises the best purchasing propositions in the respective categories of the new vehicle market.

“Vehicle purchases are amongst the biggest that consumers are likely to make in their lifetime,” said Ghana Msibi, executive head of sales and marketing at WesBank.

“Initiatives such as this offer credible opinions on the types of cars and features available in the market, and in so doing help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a new or used vehicle,” he said.

The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.

All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.

Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.

The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.

“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.

“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.

“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”

And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.

Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.

Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.

Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.

Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.

L’automobile fait partie intégrante de nos vies depuis plus d’un demi-siècle. Aujourd’hui, elle s’intègre au paysage urbain des grandes métropoles et nous aide dans nos déplacements quotidiens. Mais certains l’utilisent comme un objet passion, et lorsque l’on a des enfants, elle devient aussi l’auto familiale. Dimitri, amoureux de la marque Ford depuis son enfance, en sait quelque chose. Propriétaire d’une Focus ST 250 et père de famille, il a succombé au caractère bien trempé de la belle sportive. D’ailleurs, il a le profil parfait du proprio de compacte survitaminée, un segment qui remporte un grand succès aujourd’hui auprès des automobilistes. En effet, il s’est vendu en 2012 près de 3 500 modèles de ce type dans l’Hexagone. Cela peut s’expliquer par le fait que les Français recherchent un véhicule qui puisse leur donner des sensations fortes tout en étant pratique et familial au quotidien. Et qu’en pense Dimitri ?

I° PRESENTATION –

Dimitri et sa Focus ST 250

T-shirt ST assorti à sa voiture, Dimitri nous présente sa Ford à Ornes dans la Meuse, l’un des neuf villages détruits de la Zone Rouge de Verdun. Ce routier de trente-deux ans sait user de superlatifs lorsqu’il parle de sa voiture. Et l’on comprend pourquoi en voyant la bête bodybuildée. Acheté il y a quelques mois en occasion, ce petit bolide de 2013 n’a que seulement 51 000 km. Et lorsque l’on s’attarde sur l’historique du conducteur, on s’aperçoit que Dimitri a collectionné les Ford. Il nous raconte que sa passion vient de ses parents : « Depuis 35 ans, ils n’ont eu que des Ford – plusieurs Focus, Fusion, EcoSport, B-Max. J’ai été baigné dans la Ford-attitude depuis ma plus tendre enfance. Je trouve que leurs modèles ont une belle gueule ! »

Et lorsqu’il passe son permis en 2006, il se tourne naturellement vers la marque de Dearborn : « J’ai commencé par une Fiesta 1.4 68 ch, ma première voiture que j’ai acheté neuve. En tant que jeune permis, c’était très bien. J’ai ensuite eu une autre Fiesta, la S 1.6 90 ch. Elle avait le look sport mais pas le moteur. Puis est arrivé le S-Max 2.0 163 ch en finition Titanium. Il existe aussi en version 90 ch mais c’est un tank (rires) ! Pour un monospace de cette taille, il faut minimum 150 ch. Enfin, aujourd’hui je possède cette fameuse Focus ST 250. Peut-être que la prochaine sera une Focus RS (rires) ? » C’est tout ce que l’on peut souhaiter pour Dimitri.

II° DESIGN EXTERIEUR ET HABITACLE –

Gueule d’ange…

Sous le soleil de mars brille la ST 250 de Dimitri. On peut apprécier l’éclat que procure le Bleu Spirit aux abords de l’église du village détruit d’Ornes. Ce qu’il reste de son style architectural ancien tranche avec la modernité du Kinetic design de la firme américaine. Bien qu’elle existe aussi en Rouge Racing et Tangerine Scream, ce design extérieur commun à la gamme Ford fut inauguré sur le concept-car Iosis présenté au Salon de Francfort 2005. A l’époque, Carlos Ghosn et Patrick le Quément sont stupéfaits par ce nouveau style dont la caractéristique commune est cette grande calandre trapézoïdale en nid d’abeille.

Même si l’aspect extérieur est beaucoup trop sage pour une voiture sportive, le style reste agréable. Par rapport à la version de base, les pare-chocs et les prises d’air ont pris du volume. Idem pour les jupes latérales. Quant à la double sortie d’échappement, elle accentue l’esprit sportif du véhicule. Cependant, si vous voulez quelque chose de plus radical, optez pour l’agressivité d’une RS ! Le rêve de Dimitri…

D’ailleurs, celui-ci me confie comme un enfant : « A la base, je voulais la Focus RS Mk2 en vert pomme car je suis fou amoureux de cette voiture-là. Pour un problème de budget, je me suis dirigé sur la Focus ST 250 qui, au final, n’était pas du tout dans mes projets. Et quand j’ai vu le modèle sur Internet, je me suis dit « wouaw ! Elle est vraiment magnifique ! » J’ai été la voir et l’essayer avec le concessionnaire et je suis tombé sous le charme. » Ce n’est pas le groupe Moretto qui s’en plaindra !

Toujours au chapitre esthétique, Dimitri a des projets d’avenir pour embellir sa belle : « Je veux changer les feux avant pour en mettre à LED. A l’arrière, j’aimerais qu’ils soient plus sombres. Sous le pare-choc avant, j’aimerais ajouter une lame sans oublier le becquet arrière qui était une option. En plus des vitres teintées, j’aimerais lui donner un look plus racing en changeant les jantes pour de nouvelles de marque Ford. Pour finir, j’aimerais faire découper une partie de capot pour installer des prises d’air… »

L’intérieur ne change pas beaucoup de la version de base. Cependant, quelques éléments rappellent que l’on est dans la version sportive : la griffe ST sur le volant, le levier de vitesse et le pédalier qui sont spécifiques, les manomètres placés au sommet de la console centrale sans oublier les sièges baquets Recaro qui offrent un très bon maintien latéral en conduite sportive. La finition est meilleure que d’habitude et la qualité des matériaux est bonne. On retrouve des plastiques moussés un peu partout.

III° SOUS LE CAPOT –

… et comportement diabolique !

Lorsque l’on aborde un tel véhicule, on a envie de savoir ce qu’il a dans le ventre. Pour remplacer le 5-cylindres 225 ch de l’ancienne génération, Ford a pensé au 4-cylindres 2.0 EcoBoost de 250 ch. Il laisse exprimer toute sa puissance avec le « Sound Symposer », une membrane qui amplifie les bruits d’admission du moteur lorsque le conducteur appuie sur l’accélérateur.

Mais Dimitri a fait quelques petites modifications : « J’ai installé un dump valve pour le turbo afin de gagner en compression et – un peu – en accélération. Cela n’est pas flagrant mais a son petit plus. En effet, le charme du « pschhhht » qui se déclenche est sympa mais hélas, il ne soulève pas les jupes des filles (rires) ! De plus, j’ai installé un filtre à air KN dans la boîte d’origine afin que le moteur puisse mieux respirer. Cela le refroidit mieux et parfois, on peut gagner quelques chevaux (peut-être quatre ou cinq) ou en perdre ! Pour terminer, j’aimerais à l’avenir faire une reprogrammation pour un passage à l’éthanol.

Cependant avec un tel engin, il est difficile de respecter les 80 km/h ! Les performances ne reflètent pas une utilisation de route et le bolide serait plus à l’aise sur circuit. Heureusement qu’il n’y a pas de toit ouvrant pour défaire la permanente de madame car avec un 0 à 100 km/h atteint en 6.5 secondes et une vitesse maxi de 248 km/h, il y aurait de quoi faire des dégâts dans les chevelures. Au chapitre consommation, si vous avez une conduite bon père de famille, comptez sur un raisonnable 7.2 litres aux 100 km. Mais si l’esprit de Ken Block vous hante dès que vous prenez le volant sans les enfants, il faudra aller plus souvent à la pompe et voir la conso grimper à environ 14 litres aux 100.

Mais avec de telles performances, il faut un comportement routier exemplaire. Et de ce côté-ci, il n’y a pas de craintes à avoir. La Focus ST 250 est rivée au sol comme si elle se trouvait sur des rails. Elle enchaîne les épingles avec une telle facilité que cela en est déstabilisant. Cela est en partie dû au différentiel électronique actif qui a pour rôle d’équilibrer le couple sur la roue avant intérieure afin de réduire au maximum le sous-virage. Il y a aussi les suspensions sport ou le freinage mordant qui accentuent la sensation de sécurité. Attention tout de même à ne pas oublier qu’une sportive a ses limites ! N’oublions pas l’ESP qui est paramétrable en trois modes : actif, intermédiaire ou inactif. En résumé, pour définir la voiture et sa tenue de route, on peut retenir trois mots : agile, sûre et précise.

IV° CONCLUSION –

Options & Tarifs

Au prix du neuf, la Ford Focus ST 250 était disponible au prix de 31 500 € (malus écologique compris de 750 €). Pour ce tarif, les clients étaient gâtés : sièges Recaro, climatisation automatique, jantes 18 pouces, radio CD/mp3 SONY. Quelques options étaient également disponibles comme la fameuse teinte Tangerine Scream (1 200 €), le Pack Style ST comprenant les étriers de freins rouges, les jantes 18 pouces grises et les seuils de porte rétro-éclairés (260 €) ou encore le système de navigation SONY SD Europe avec écran 5 pouces couleur, sans oublier la caméra de recul (1 510 €).

Pour info, la nouvelle Focus ST arrive avec trente chevaux supplémentaires. Cette auto sera disponible à l’été 2019 en berline et break SW. Quant aux motorisations, il y aura la traditionnelle essence de 280 ch et une Diesel de 190 ch.

Enfin, Dimitri fait partie de deux groupes Facebook : Ford Focus ST/RS France et FORD Sport Grand-Est. La prochaine sortie qu’il prévoit avec sa ST 250 est prévue le 12 mai 2019 sur l’ancien circuit Reims-Gueux dans la Marne. Ce rassemblement est ouvert uniquement aux Fordistes fans de Focus ST et RS en génération Mk1, Mk2 et Mk3. Je ne manquerais pas de vous en parler sur le blog.
