投稿再開のきっかけはとあるウルトラぽっちゃり少年ファンのメッセージとイラストの贈り物。ありがとうございます。少年ウルトラマン小説の新作できれば年内に💦
Messages from my friend Ultra Chubby Boy fan has triggered me to be starting this over. Thank you. I’m just wishing I could upload another story of Ultraman Boy within this year.

I love this scene cause it shows how the ossans are basically children haha. RyoYasu team demanding why their pic wasn't chosen. Jinnai-san the judge is out scolding the ossans like a class teacher angry at his misbehaving kids. Jinnai-san even said Okura’s oba-chan photos were gross lol. Then Ryo quietly took an embarrassing photo of jinnai-san scolding them in IKEA Ryo’s evil face, Subaru’s evil laugh, and Yasu laughed so hard he slid off the scene. Middle aged children i tell you lol

2018-02-24: Underestimation
“I think not, tiny wurm, for mine enchanted blade doth not brightly glow ‘round mere draconic kobold servants! Nay... Thou art the very dragon Evaristok himself! Oh, what luck and joy I will take in personally hoisting your vile little snout on a platter before King Arthur. Finally, I shall join the Round Table as a veritable dragon slayer!”

久々ぽっちゃり君。自分も幼い頃はぽっちゃり君だったことを思い出すために。結局、南の島の食事が良くないのか移住後、お腹出てしまったけど
A chubby one after a long absence to recall I used to be the same during my childhood. I got fatter again because of meals in this island, maybe.

What is a game?
Dangerous question. Maybe not as dangerous as what is art, but you know, dangerous question. I had this discussion with friends. We started with three simple rules, where 1 is necessary, plus one of either 2 or 3:
Interactive & Constrained (constrained, basically: has rules)
Meaningful decisions (decisions affect outcome)
Develops a skill (skill does not need to meet any metric of 'useful')
This looked like a good starting point, and I started running various games through the filter. In fact, the list came about in this form in an attempt to improve how it fit certain things that I really wanted to be classified as games.
For example, I thought it would be valuable for something like Doki Doki Literature Club to be classified as a game. Requiring all three rules be true sort of rules it out, as it barely meets rule 2 and only arguably meets rule 3 (depending on how you view the poem-making part of the game). By loosening the requirements to require rule 1 and one of either 2 or 3, DDLC makes it in; the decisions you make in the game do affect the outcome. It's weak, as the game is largely linear, and there is ultimately only two 'endings', but DDLC does meet the criteria.
However, when I first sat down to write this a month ago, I realised a problem my friend group had not seen in the original discussion. While our criteria were good for selecting games, it overselects. Criteria are important for what they include, but also for what they exclude. Our list does not exclude much.
Rather more specifically, it includes Lego.
Generally, Lego blocks are only played with other Lego blocks, and this provides a natural constraint. This is not the only mode of play with Lego, but I would argue it is the most common one, and is so implicit that most people would not think about using them otherwise unless this was pointed out. The decisions you make are meaningful, as the outcomes are as limitless as your block supply. And playing with Lego definitely develops a skill. However, while you can certainly have games that involve Lego, Lego itself as a building tool is not inherently gamelike.
So, the game definition as proposed is not as useful as I would like it to be.
Expanding 'constrained' to mean 'has rules' gets rid of Lego, while still including DDLC; there is no need for the rules to be explicit to be present. In fact, I would argue it allows all video games, just due to the nature of software. Well, software that runs reliably and consistently, anyway.1 There is an argument to be made that Lego has rules as well, and that a constraint it just a rule wrapped up differently. I am uncertain about this. And it feels weird typing this in a post that is so obviously pedantic, but I am actually not trying to be overly pedantic about all this.
What I really want is a good working definition and some simple rules, that will allow me to look at various games through those rules. Basically, these rules are not meant to be ironclad. They are meant to help me make future posts, and learn a few things about games along the way.
To that end, the rules I will be using until someone convinces me otherwise.
A game is:
Interactive, constrained, and has rules.
Has meaningful decisions
Developes a skill
1 is required. One of 2 or 3 is required, with the other being optional. For now. It is possible by the time I am done exploring here, certain things I consider games will be found not to be by my own metrics, and things I did not consider games will wind up becoming games. I will adjust my constraints as I go along until I get a definition I find satisfying.2
If this post ever takes off, I am looking forward to the deluge of unconstrained software games that I will be hopefully be sent. ↩︎
This really is all just meant to be a tool to help me develop posts while talking about games. My word should never be considered authoritative. Quite the opposite, in fact. I am only an expert at exactly two things, and this is not one of them. ↩︎
