Series Review: Agatha All Along, will it be boring and more of the same?

The eleventh television series belonging to phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally premiered, being a spin-off of the WandaVision series we expect a lot from this and the continuity of its story. Agatha All Along aims to continue showing that world of witchcraft and supernatural things with a touch of humor, something that may seem new and fresh but has more depth than we can see at first glance. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer is now and again in charge of continuing to develop these characters with a new plot and subplots that share continuity with the franchise films in this vast universe. While stage 5 has not worked as well as we expected, that plan that began with Agents of SHIELD in 2013 is far away, followed by Agent Carter 2015, Inhumans 2017, Runaways 2017, Cloak & Dagger 2018, Helstrom 2020, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...? and Hawkeye in 2021, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in 2022 and finally Secret Invasion and Echo in 2023 and 2024 respectively, these series and miniseries have had their ups and downs, needless to say, Marvel Studios and Disney have had their problems to keep all this going.

What is the Agatha All Along miniseries about?

Three years after being trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey, and following the end of the WandaVision miniseries, the witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) escapes from her confinement and her spell with the help of Teen (Joe Locke) a goth teenager who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Way of the Witches, now and without their magical powers Agatha and this young boy form a new coven of witches to face the trials and Agatha's old enemies. 3 years have passed since we met this unique character in the WandaVision series, since then we expected these studios to do the same and keep it at the same level and the results that their streaming series have had have not been what was expected and much less good. We were left with Agatha Harkness being trapped under Wanda's spell in Westview at the end of the series, where, without knowing it, she acts as the protagonist in a series of another genre, a police series that makes clear humorous, elegant, and fun references to True Detective, we could think that from this point things would improve for this character to explore more alternate and imaginary realities and this is not the case. Here we see that Agatha has formed a new coven recruiting a motley group of worn-out allied characters among which are the Sicilian fortune-telling witch Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone), the potions expert and supposed beauty influencer Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), a guardian witch Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), a mysterious warrior Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) and Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp). With a cast like this, we could expect something from good to very good, it is noticeable that they do what they can with what they have channeling their respective abilities with that natural comic and magical style giving this a new more personal and more exaggerated style as we had not seen before in the MCU, it is something that wants to look like Hocus Pocus but it did not turn out as they expected, Agatha's personality is that of an elegant and visually attractive woman who seeks to know again who she is and what she can be capable of. The tone they have given it after these 3 years that have passed is light and simple, however, we are not facing a series of more than 20 episodes nor is it interested in exploring beyond what it intends and promises, in short, it faces the characteristic curse that there is now in Marvel series and that is to emphasize a story about the character without going into depth or explaining anything, demonstrating with this that this work is completely unnecessary and filler to remain moderately current in the interest of an audience that increasingly expects more and that increasingly ends up more disappointed. The two available episodes go from point A to point B without much interest, they comply with their own established rule, characters that until now have very little development which hinders the flow of the story, it develop subplots that are even simpler, funny, vulgar, inclusive, fun but lacking depth and that "something" that we look for that makes it more serious and more interesting, it is clear to us that this is neither so captivating nor so mysterious, this manages to feel more like something apart that without the reference of its origin could work more along the lines of witchcraft and comic horror. As a spin-off/sequel to WandaVision, this series is responsible for filling some very big shoes and more than living up to it. WandaVision is still considered one of Marvel's best television projects that emerged as a new proposal within this universe after the events of Avengers: End Game with much more potential to want to expand everything they have done, giving them the importance that each one deserves so that in the future all of this continues to be part of a meta-story.

The 2 episodes that are already available are:

1. Seekest Thou the Road. In a crime/police television series titled Agnes of Westview, Agnes O'Connor is a police detective obsessed with the Jane Doe murder case, one night a teenager breaks into Agnes' house, looking for someone named The Road, Agnes believes he is linked to the murder case and arrests him, Rio Vidal is an FBI agent who along with Agnes realizes that the Jane Doe they are seeing is the body of Wanda Maximoff and that Agnes is the witch Agatha Harkness who has been trapped under a spell, upon breaking free from this Agatha realizes that she no longer possesses her powers and that Vidal is a fellow witch with whom she has a history, Vidal warns Agatha that the Salem Seven will soon be after her.

2. Circle Sewn with Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate. Her savior reveals that he freed Agatha from the spell and wishes to travel the Witches' Way where she could regain her power, needing a coven to open a portal to the Way the pair recruits witches Lilia Calderu, Jennifer Kale, and Alice Wu-Gulliver and Westview resident Sharon Davis, while these four witches and Davis perform the ritual to open the door to the Way, the teen sees the Salem Seven arrive and escapes with the coven through the door. These 2 episodes have a big flaw and it is their narrative, it is clumsy and slow, it wants to take us down an unknown path that promises to surprise us, and knowing this format we know that this will either take a while or it will not happen because it falls back into the comfort zone of leaving everything for a possible "later" We return to the point of the script, the writers Jac Schaeffer and Laura Donney in these 2 episodes are more focused on cheap and unnecessary feminism than on raising things and giving them a more solid foundation, one that can develop on its own without having to resort to the easy reference that we will see things that are not there and will not be, I am not saying that this is wrong, I say it because it is already a constant that only leads us to boredom, that WandaVision in which week after week there was theorizing about what was going to happen and the absent presence of Mephisto as the great revelation is far away, all this was fun because its script was very well structured and raised things that left us waiting for more to happen, that This doesn't happen here and I highly doubt it will happen in later episodes.

The fact that there is an inclusive modernity with a moral message that will be discerned in the next 7 episodes makes us understand right away that they are going to apply the already worn-out formula of the villain who redeems herself and who neither the bad guy nor the good guy but the opposite, things that we have seen before and that has not worked, we still don't understand how a villain is given other villains as antagonists, a lot of blah blah blah about morality and the commitment to oneself to do the right things is precisely what is boring, what takes everything out of rhythm if she is a villain we want to see things that a villain does and not the faults that lead her to rethink things over and over again to make the best decision. We are facing a new lost opportunity for a character that could become important. Perhaps transcendental for the future of the MCU, and perhaps a new confrontation with Wanda Maximoff is planned, which if so would be redeeming much of the bad they have done or that they continue on the path of failure, wanting to do things to comply but that do not excite anyone. It is unfortunate how Marvel, the house of ideas, has very bad ones in its streaming series, as these have gone from bad to worse, promising that each one will be the best and most innovative that both friends and strangers have seen, what we have seen and confirmed is that after they closed a very important part of phase 3 they no longer know what direction to take or what to do with their secondary characters, poor planning and lack of originality have made everything become chaos without much sense. The cast includes Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Debra Jo Rupp, Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Okwui Okpokwasili, Patti LuPone, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein and Miles Gutierrez-Riley, actors who have great potential and who we hope will be able to develop each of their characters very well. In the very particular case of Kathryn Hahn, she has proven to be a very versatile actress with a fun and cynical charisma that makes this character credible. With little, she manages to do a lot and convince us that she is a real witch and a bitch, and this is achieved by doing a good job and understanding perfectly well what her character is like. agnes-agatha-harkness.gif The music composed by Christophe Beck and Michael Paraskevas is at a very pleasant level that is sometimes interesting and sometimes just accompanies what we are seeing making itself present in a subtle way, the main theme composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez has that very interesting simple and choral tone. In conclusion, Agatha All Along is one of those rare experiments that Marvel has of making its series fail before being released, 2 chapters are not enough to make things clear but they are enough to be able to realize that things can go average or very bad, let's hope that the result of this is not boring with more of the same. The Tesla of China or Something Different?

Elon Musk and his company Tesla changed the car industry by trailblazing the production of Electric Vehicles. “The global electric vehicle market size was valued at $118,864.5 million in 2017, and is projected to reach $567,299.8 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 22.3% from 2018 to 2025.”

China, the world’s largest auto market, saw a huge influx of electric vehicle (EV) startups over the past 10 years. “According to Forbes, Chinese automakers churned out 680,000 all-electric cars, buses, and trucks in 2017, more than the rest of the world combined.”

In short, the future is EV and so far, China is taking advantage of it. So, what is this article all about? One specific Chinese EV company called NIO. The company has been labeled the Tesla of China. I’d like to compare the similarities and differences between the two companies and products. Lets organize this in the 4 P’s + Jordan’s other two P’s.

Product

Let’s start with exterior design. To get an idea of what the two products look like and their websites please look at the two websites here https://www.tesla.com/ and here https://www.nio.com/. What you’ll find is that the exterior design is very similar. Let’s call out the obvious when it comes to exterior design and car models Nio copied Tesla, hard! When it comes to their website look and feel the copied them too.

For the interior design it is very similar too. However, Nio added personality to its vehicle with an AI bot named Nomi. This bot can be seen in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhxi0BMAL0I. This addition I would say gives them a leg up on Tesla from a product standpoint just as Alexa gives a competitive advantage to Amazon.

For technical design, there is one key difference. Tesla uses charging stations while Nio uses swappable battery technology and an app to order on-demand new batteries. My thoughts, Nio learned from Tesla’s mistake which is that infrastructure can’t be changed overnight. I think in the short-run this is smart because they then can switch to charging technology after Tesla pays for the infrastructure change.

Placement

Nio is only sold in the high-end Chinese market, while Tesla is sold in the U.S., China, and around the world. This is an area where Tesla is winning and Nio is losing due to Tesla’s first mover advantage. The brand awareness of Tesla vs. Nio is far superior in the U.S. Moreover, Tesla takes a strong market share in china. Also, there is a large amount of competition in the EV industry in China vs. the U.S. The good news, Nio has some of the most prime real estate in Shangai to market their cars. Lastly, history has shown that what has been successful for combustion engines in China, usually is successful in the U.S. markets.

Price

Nio is priced at what would be equivalent to $65,000 in US while Tesla is priced at the equivalent $110,000 USD when you consider their car market pricing and proportion of budget spending on cars. This puts tesla at a more luxurious price point while Nio can squeeze some sales in the lower upper class of China.

Promotion

They have very similar promotional strategies, free energy. Nio offers free battery swaps for a year while Tesla offers free charging at any of its stations. They are both footing the bill or subsidizing the demand for Electric Vehicles to compete with combustible engines when they do this. In a sense, they are both pioneering the EV industry.

Production

I am adding production as a 5th P even though I don’t have the poetic license to do so. Anyways, how these cars are produced is a similar story to the swappable battery technology. What I mean is, Nio saw that Tesla is having a lot of trouble producing their own cars. As a result, they decided to partner with JAC a large auto manufacturing company in China to produce their vehicles. I think this was a brilliant move.

Politics

Mr. Elon musk has done a great job securing funds and grants from the government. Just recently Nevada offered $1.3 B in tax incentives to Tesla to build their battery plant there. “NIO is establishing a joint venture with a state-owned fund, Beijing E-Town International Investment and Development company (E-Town Capital), the company said during its first-quarter earnings conference call today (May 28). E-Town Capital will put 10 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) into NIO China, as the Beijing-based JV will be called, in exchange for a minority stake.” Moreover, China is starting to put a cap on the number of EV Start up permits that are issued which will give Nio protection in the Chinese market.

All said and done, Nio and Tesla are very similar. If Nio can break out of the financial distress they are in currently, they could become the Toyota to Tesla’s GM. We shall wait and see!

Jharkhand board class 12th results 2018: Check your scores on jac.nic.in

Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) declared the Jharkhand class 12th board results for Science and Commerce streams today, 7 June, around 12 noon.

According to The Indian Express, the pass percentage for Science stream was 48.34 per cent. Approximately, 4,677 students have cleared the examination.

The pass percentage was higher in the Commerce stream with 67.49 per cent. Around 27,164 students passed the exams.

The results can be viewed on board's websites, jac.nic.in and also on jharresults.nic.in. In 2017, the board results in Jharkhand were announced on May 30.

The characters need to spend time together, and their interactions have to build on trust and what they know about each other. Think about your own relationships with people, including friendships, and note how you came about to know them and trust them. Chances are, these relationships were built slowly over time, and moment by moment, so to speak, in which the other person demonstrated reliability or common interests with you. So make sure to give the characters time to get to know each other, but keep in mind that under extreme situations trust will build faster (i.e. an hour spent stuck in an elevator will result in more closeness between the two than three hours socialising at a party). Focus on ‘moments’ that step-by-step build the relationship into a fully romantic one. Another useful thing you can do for writing slow-burn fanfiction is to create as much sexual tension as possible. This can be done by making it clear that the characters are attracted to each other (usually physically at first, but over time this can extend to emotional needs, intellectual attraction, etc.) but also indicate that they are restraining themselves in some way. It’s the ‘want to, but can’t’ or even better, ‘want to, but shouldn’t’ that really amps up the tension between two characters and makes for a slowly paced, built-up romance.

Either way, there should be something else going outside the relationship, even if it’s just daily life for the two. Intersperse some other activities and moments from their lives between the romantic building, and it’ll help keep the romance from going too fast (but again, keep it at a reasonable amount; don’t overload the reader with too much side stuff.)

Have a good, solid plot that will keep readers interested so their focus isn’t the romance. Don’t force the relationship, like real life, forcing a relationship is a very bad idea; you want it to grow naturally: get them to become friends first, have them trust each other, respect each other. Then when it come so time to them being together, it seems like it’s just the natural next step in their lives. I personally like parallels and call-backs to previous things, it just gives an extra depth since it’s a connection between the characters. This applies to any romance really, but with slowburns you can also foreshadow! Have a moment, love at first sight is rare so I’m presuming it’s not going to be instant attraction that just drags on creating lots of sexual tension, it’s probably going to be friends-to-lovers which means you need a moment where one of your party suddenly realises that it’s them they’re attracted to. The moment that they realise that all this time it’s been them and not anyone else.

NIO sees first Pre-Production ET7 and Hycan launched the Z03

The NIO ET7 is finally for real. The production version was unveiled on the eve of the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show in China. NIO also announced pricing and colors.

NIO still doesn’t have its own factory. Like the other NIO’s, the NIO ET7 is contract-manufactured by Jianghuai Automobile (JAC). NIO’s current contract with JAC runs until 2024. In the mean time, NIO hopes to build its own factory, but recently we haven’t heard much about that anymore, so perhaps they plan to stay with JAC for a bit longer.

NIO sees first Pre-Production vehicles of ET7 roll off line. The core objective of this phase is to make the production line capable of mass production, at the end of which the ET7 will officially enter the final mass production phase.

Nio backed EV startup Hycan launched the Z03 crossover for $20,000

Hycan is a new EV brand in China. It was founded in 2018 as a joint venture between state-owned GAC (Guangzhou Auto) and Nio. While Nio’s cars are built by another state-owned automaker JAC, GAC will take care of the manufacturing of Hycan vehicles. Z03 is Hycan’s second car (the first was SUV Hycan 007, which had moderate success). In the first half of this year, GAC NIO JV was renamed Hycan Automobile Technology Co., Ltd. Hycan automobile focuses on young users.

This week, Hycan Z03 was officially announced on the market. There are four trims, with a price range of 132,800 yuan to 168,800 yuan ($20,000 – $26,000).

The research group of Nuno Maulide from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Vienna has, in cooperation with the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, achieved the synthesis of a potential immunosuppressive agent by modification of a naturally occurring compound. In this endeavour, the researchers have employed a masking trick to “hide” a reactive species inside the target molecule. The results were recently published in the renowned Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The Chemical fascination of Natural products

Chemists have long had a fascination with Nature. “Nature is an amazing Chemist,” explains Nuno Maulide, Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Vienna and Austrian Scientist of the Year 2018, “especially since it has had millions of years to perfect a chemical machinery which is unrivalled in its complexity and efficiency.”

Particularly fascinating are the so-called “Natural products.” These are substances produced by living organisms, for the most diverse functions: defense, sensing, signaling, among others. For example, a plant which is threatened by a certain parasite might develop, through evolution over a period of many thousands of years, the ability to produce certain classes of chemicals that can either kill or at least repel the said parasite. Natural products often possess very sophisticated chemical structure and are species-specific—meaning, they are produced only by a selected species of organisms.

The FR-molecules: natural products with special properties

In 2003, a Japanese company reported the isolation of 3 natural products from the microorganism Pseudomonas fluorescens, the so-called “FR Molecules” (cf. Figure 1). Noteworthy was their complex chemical structure but also their very interesting immunosuppressive properties. Immunosuppressive drugs are widely used in the treatment of allograft repulsions and autoimmune-associated diseases. Although a range of such drugs have been developed and are used clinically, almost all of them carry severe side effects and limitations. The search for new immunosuppressants with a distinct mode of action is therefore an urgent need to improve the safety and efficiency of immunosuppressive therapy.

Several research groups have attempted the laboratory synthesis of the FR molecules in the years that followed—with mitigated sucess. “They all struggled with the molecule’s Achilles’ Heel: the macrocyclic ring with three consecutive double bonds,” explains Nuno Maulide, who since November 2018 is also Adjunct PI at CeMM.

A solution to a long-standing problem

Maulide and his team have now developed a novel chemical reaction that allows the preparation of such macrocyclic structures in high efficiency and from simple precursors. “We simply hide the double bonds in a ‘secured’ form, so that they can be revealed at a later stage. Very much like a “Trojan horse,'” jokes Yong Chen, first author of the paper.

For this goal the researchers install a smaller ring with only 4 carbon atoms, termed a “cyclobutene,” as a “masked” form for the double bonds of the natural product (cf. Figure 2). This approach results in a very short access to the FR molecules.

“We are now in a position to make grams of these compounds; the natural source delivered at best milligrams—a considerable advance. Furthermore, the compounds we prepare in the lab are indistinguishable from those isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens,” enthuses Maulide.

Variations lead to a better drug

As the researchers are now able to reproduce these complex structures in the lab, they are in a position to introduce non-natural variations and modifications of those structures. They already found an “analogue” (i.e, a new molecule resembling the original natural product but possessing small structural modifications) that is almost 100 times more potent than the compounds produced by Nature. “The joint collaboration between University of Vienna and CeMM has resulted in true synergies,” explains Stefan Kubicek from the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM), and coauthor of the study.

“There are so many open questions: what is the mode of action of these molecules? Can we improve the activity even further? Research at its best always generates more questions than answers,” ends Maulide.

First Case of Ceftriaxone-Resistant Multidrug-Resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Singapore

The SGH laboratory has been doing antimicrobial surveillance testing on regular  systematic sample collections of Neisseria gonorrhoeae sent to us from the Department of  Sexually Transmitted Infection Control, National Skin Centre since 1992 (at least). These results are submitted to the World Health Organization Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (WHO GASP). Local isolates of N. gonorrhoeae are often resistant to penicillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. The key antibiotic is therefore a third generation cephalosporin like ceftriaxone, with azithromycin thrown in for good measure (https://www.dsc-clinic.sg/Healthcare-Professionals/Books%20and%20Publications/Pages/STI-Management-Guideline-6th-Edition-(2013).aspx).

Ceftriaxone has remained a reliable antibiotic for a surprisingly long time but resistance has finally emerged. The first ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae was reported in Japan in 2011 (Ohnishi M, 2011). This strain named H041 had a ceftriaxone MIC of 2 mg/L. Since then, ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae have been reported in an increasing number of countries. Resistance is due to a mosaic penA allele (i.e. the gene is made up of bits of DNA from different genomes, N. gonorrhoeae can do this because they can acquire DNA from their environment by a process called transformation). This results in an altered penicillin-binding protein with reduced affinity to beta-lactam antibiotics.

A particular clone, named after the original strain FC428 isolated in Japan in 2015 has spread internationally (Lee K, 2019). In 2017, the World Health Organization published a list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are urgently needed. Cephalosporin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae were listed as Priority 2: High.

Our lab diagnosed the first ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae to be isolated in Singapore in early 2018.

The isolate was resistant to ceftriaxone with an MIC of 1 mg/L (left) and an annular radius of 5 mm by the CDS method.

Whole genome sequencing was performed and analysis showed that the strain had the same penA allele as the FC428 clone. Furthermore it belonged to ST13871 (allele profile abcZ 126 adk 39 aro E67 fumC 987 gdh 148 pdhC 153 pgm 65) which is a single locus variant of ST1903 (allele profile abcZ 126 adk 39 aroE 67 fumC 157 gdh 148 pdhC 153 pgm 65), the common multi locus sequence type of the FC428 clone. More details can be found in our paper which has just been published (Ko K, 2019).

As many of the cases of ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae were reported to have been acquired in south-east asia, we can only expect this problem to become worse.

Video of a 14-year-old girl getting punched by cops surfaces

A video of a 14-year-old Black girl being repeatedly punched by police has surfaced, once more bringing up online conversation about police brutality and racial bias.  The unnamed teen is shown pinned to the ground by Coral Springs, Fla. police in a video that began circulating on social media over the weekend.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Oct. 18. In the video, originally posted to Instagram by a woman claiming to be the girl’s cousin, a woman can be heard shouting, “Why you hitting her?”

Prompted by the video, a conversation about excessive force quickly unfolded on Twitter. Many people criticized the officers for what they saw as “corruption in the police,” while others questioned what she had done to deserve the treatment.

Coral Springs Police released a statement about the video the next day. “As with all social media posts, it shows only the end of the story, not the incident in its entirety which led up to the arrest,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, the teen was part of a group who had been “harassing patrons and causing a disturbance.” The teens had been causing issues for mall security, and when police arrived, “security indicated one of the teens [arrested] was seen striking another teen patron.” After the teens were banned from the mall, police received word they had returned.

“One of the male teens was taken into custody without incident. As a result, the female teen seen in the video, began cursing, attempting to incite the other teens,” the statement reads. “Officers attempted to take her into custody, at which time she began to fight and resist arrest.”

The teen allegedly “violently kicked” an officer as police attempted to place her in the patrol car. She was transported to the Justice Administrative Commission (JAC) and charged with battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing. She has since been released.

In an interview with WSVN 7News in Miami, the girl’s mother, Jessica Dennis, said she couldn’t keep watching the video. “It was just too much, because it just makes you angry,” she said. “I mean, I was heartbroken.”

The family’s attorney, Meeghan Moldof, said the arresting officer used excessive force. “It’s clear from the video that my client was on the ground,” Moldof told WSVN in an interview. “Her hands are under her belly, the officer’s knees are on her back, and he’s just gut-shotting her, like one after another.”
