2023 SEMA SHOW CREATES CONNECTIONS
Tumblr media
2023 SEMA SHOW CREATES CONNECTIONS THAT DRIVE FUTURE SUCCESS FOR THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2023) – The SEMA Show returned to Las Vegas Oct. 31-Nov. 3, bringing together more than 150,000 automotive aftermarket industry professionals looking to transform four days of relationship-building, networking, sales and marketing into business success and dreams realized.   The proof that the SEMA Show was poised to return to historic levels was found in the packed Las Vegas Convention Center exhibit halls, teeming with more than 2,200 exhibitors, boundary-pushing builds, innovative new products, thought-provoking educational opportunities and more than 150,000 attendees connecting throughout the aftermarket community. The Show creates connections via dedicated product communities, outdoor activations, education and training, award programs, reveals, unique experiences and celebrations.   “The SEMA Show is one of the largest trade shows in the country, but it’s actually comprised of several smaller, distinct communities,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA VP of Events. “The networking that takes place within those groups is where you see the transformative power the Show has to positively impact participants and chart the course of the aftermarket industry.”   Perhaps nowhere else is that transformative power felt more strongly than amongst the companies exhibiting at the Show for the first time. More than 20 percent of the exhibitors were new participants, driving innovation, including Caross USA, manufacturers of portable jump starters and air compressors, based in San Mateo, Calif. The start-up has had products on sale for a mere three months and SEMA was its first trade show. Not only did they meet prospective partners from Canada to Australia, but their networking also gained them exposure via social media and led to a relationship with the television show “Two Guys Garage” and a potential on-air appearance in February. They also won two Global Media Awards (GMA), given by judges comprised of members of the international media to products they feel will be well-received in their respective countries.   “You don’t see a lot of ‘tire kickers’ at SEMA, the buyers are much more serious,” said Global Sales Director Steve Stambaugh. “I can’t say enough about SEMA. Being at this Show has done more for our company in two days than other industries do in 10 years.”   For returning exhibitors, the SEMA Show was an opportunity to continue building on the year-over-year growth that participation creates. For CIC Powerbox of Pittsburg, Kan., a manufacturer of AC-powered truck boxes that first exhibited at the Show in 2018, their participation has led to several partnerships.   “Every time we come to SEMA we come away with new business,” said CEO Mike Windsor, listing the Department of Transportation, the United States Air Force, Goodyear, and several OEMs as just a few of the relationships forged at the SEMA Show. “We’ve also made connections for opportunities we either weren’t aware of or didn’t know how to get into,” he added, including sponsorship of professional drift racer Faruk Kugay and growth of CIC’s social media marketing as examples. “We’ve had exponential growth year over year and if all goes well, this year we’ll go international thanks to the relationships we’ve made at SEMA,” said Windsor.   The Show remains a popular place for OEMs to connect with the aftermarket industry. For Toyota, 2023 was a year to push boundaries. “Toyota has always seen SEMA as a place to let our imagination run wild. This past show was no exception, as we tapped into thrills on the track ... and the trail,” said Mike Tripp, Group Vice President, Toyota Marketing. “The amount of interest in the all-new 2024 Tacoma and Land Cruiser didn't disappoint. And based on the coverage we've received, it's safe to say that builds like our X-Runner Concept and FJ Bruiser were true stars of the show.”   For Ford Performance Parts & Accessories, the Show allows them to forge relationships with attendees and share the benefits of their products. “The SEMA Show gives us the opportunity to showcase the knowledge of our representatives, talk engineering and support our product with assurances that all accessories are fully reviewed for safety, ergonomics, and longevity,” said Natalie Simon, Marketing & Events Manager, Ford Performance Parts & Accessories.      For others, Show participation is a step towards achieving the dream of a career in the automotive aftermarket. Masen Schneider, a freshman studying mechanical engineering at the University of North Dakota, received a SEMA Scholarship, awarded annually to students interested in careers in the automotive industry. “It means a lot to receive a scholarship from an organization like SEMA because as big and impactful as they are, they see your story and experience and want to help propel you towards your dream,” he said. Schneider hopes to one day be an automotive parts designer.   The SEMA Show also remains a center of innovation fueled by passion, as evidenced by the Battle of the Builders Presented by Mothers Polish competition. The aftermarket industry's ultimate vehicle competition, the program celebrated 10 years of providing builders the ultimate platform to showcase their craftsmanship and skills to a worldwide audience. For Andy Leach, winning builder of the 1960 Buick Invicta Custom, the victory was the culmination of nine years of work. “It’s a dream come true,” said Leach. “I've been chasing this award for nearly a decade. The Buick was a labor of love.”   The SEMA Show returns to Las Vegas Nov. 5-8, 2024. To learn more about the SEMA Show, visit www.semashow.com. Read the full article

These Are the Ugliest Crossovers and SUVs of All Time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only did Karl Benz invent the car, he invented the ugly car in the same effort. His 1885 Benz Patent-Motorwagen wasn't exactly a looker, as it resembled a bicycle-tired kitchen chair. But you’ve got to start somewhere (we're talking, of course, about ugly vehicles, not cars in general). It would be many decades after the world was put on wheels for SUVs to appear, though not long after that ugliness caught up with that vehicle format, too. Pretty much everyone is (or should be) in agreement that Pontiac's Aztek, produced from 2001-2005, is the most repulsive of the breed. Nearly 20 years later, the misshapen crossover, with its narrow hips and insectilian face, remains the butt of jokes and the scapegoat for the death of the Pontiac brand. But is the Aztek really the ugliest SUV ever? Here we've gathered a list of 20 others that have a shot at the title; many also count among the greatest automotive flops of all time. To give these uggos a shot at fairness, then, we've arranged them in unbiased, alphabetical order.Pontiac
Tumblr media
Acura ZDX (2010–2013)Our original road test of the 2010 Acura ZDX begins: "We're tempted to believe that ZDX stands for 'zero demand expected.'" Our clairvoyance proved accurate, and the fastbacked, bubblebutted, and birdnosed ZDX found few takers and lasted just three years in the U.S. Acura put this chopped-top version of its popular MDX out of misery in 2013, ironically right as today's "crossover coupe" trend, such as it is, was beginning to build steam behind BMW's X6 and the format spread elsewhere in that brand's lineup, as well as Mercedes-Benz's.Acura
Tumblr media
Bentley Bentayga (2016–present)Regardless of what you’ve heard, Bentayga is not a Swahili word that means cross-eyed cow, but the mistake, were you to make it, is understandable. Despite the Bentley Bentayga's severe case of Strabismus, known more commonly as misaligned or crossed eyes, it has become is maker's best-selling model. It also is Bentley's first and only SUV.Chris Doane Automotive - Car and Driver
Tumblr media
Buick Rendezvous (2002–2007)Sharing its platform and therefore its unsightly, lumpen-potato shape with the Pontiac Aztek, this poor mutant was doomed from the start. Although there is little resemblance between the Aztek and the Rendezvous, which was produced from 2002 to 2007, the Buick proved GM’s design studio could make many of the same mistakes twice.AARON KILEY
Tumblr media
Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT/GMC Envoy XUV (2004–2005)In the early 2000s, GM’s design studio was apparently looking to corner the market on ugly SUVs, and it mostly succeeded. Two of its worst projects-besides, of course, the Aztek-were the extended-wheelbase versions of the Chevy Trailblazer and the GMC Envoy. GM stretched these rigs limo-style, adding 16-inches to their wheelbases, deforming the three-row SUVs into proportions so misshapen they have a fun house mirror quality. That the Envoy XUV's roof could be partially retracted (the part over the cargo area) for carrying tall things both made no sense and was completely overshadowed by the GMC's hideousness.
Tumblr media
Chrysler Aspen (2007–2009)Based on the second-generation Dodge Durango, which itself looked like a Pug sucking on a lemon, the Aspen was the first SUV marketed by the Chrysler brand. That is pretty much where the fun facts end, unless you count the hybrid version Chrysler sold a few hundred of before pulling the plug. Anyway, the Aspen's overly chromed flanks go poorly with the overly flared wheel arches, while the grille appears to be pulled from a 1972 Mercedes and turned on its side. Somehow, the Chrysler still managed to be vapid and generally unattractive. Since most Americans that drive do have eyes, it was a flop.Chrysler
Tumblr media
Dodge Nitro (2007–2012)Chrysler doubled down on hideous SUV design in 2007 by launching the Dodge Nitro, a rebadged and offensively squared-off version of the Jeep Liberty, right around the same time as the similarly bad Jeep Commander and Chrysler Aspen. Despite its overwrought flared fenders, the Nitro manages to look tall and narrow. Even more intriguing is its underbite face, which appears bearded in the style of C. Everett Koop.
Tumblr media
Honda Crosstour (2010–2015)Honda's design team must have shaped the 2010 Crosstour on a bet. As in, "I bet we can make this new wagon/crossover look like a Platypus and the executives will still sign off on it." Well, they did and they did. The resultant Crosstour wasn't popular, but it sure was hunchbacked. After just five years and a single generation, the Crosstour was crossed out.Honda
Tumblr media
Honda Element (2003–2011)The Honda Element seemed to be inspired by Picasso's Figure dans un Fauteuil, but it's no exercise in Cubism. Instead, it looks like a mail truck got busy with a Honda CR-V-actually, that's not far from the truth, as this relentlessly rectilinear SUV was based on the un-weird CR-V crossover. Later in its life cycle, the Element became slightly less repugnant, thanks to Honda's decision to paint more of its previously raw gray plastic bodywork.Honda
Tumblr media
Hyundai Santa Fe (2001–2006)The original Hyundai Santa Fe is so frumpy it surely was designed by at least a dozen people who didn't talk to each other but enjoyed group play with clay like Patrick Swayze in the movie Ghost. The SUV's shape is wrought with odd concavities and bulges, like Play-Doh squeezed by a child's fist; from some angles it actually appears dented, as if its front fenders have been hit with a baseball bat.Hyundai
Tumblr media
Infiniti QX56 (2004–2010)The first-generation Infiniti QX56 (now known as the QX80) was a chromed-up version of the Nissan Pathfinder Armada, meaning that both full-size SUVs were based on the Titan pickup truck. Infiniti fitted the massive QX56 with a car-like nose and elements from its sedans, creating a centaur-like monstrosity with an oddly domed roof and none of the mystical creature’s elegance or muscularity. Its immediate followup wasn't great either, with a beluga-like front end; a refresh for 2018 transformed the design into something actually good-looking.Infiniti
Tumblr media
Isuzu Vehicross (1999–2001)If the Suzuki Vehicross has a calling card, it's that it appears to have more bottom than top, if that makes sense. It also predates the Pontiac Aztek. When the concept version debuted at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1993, we called it fish-faced. Later, we said the production version looks like an escapee from the set of "Battlestar Galactica." Hey, it's still the only SUV ever produced with vampire fangs.Isuzu
Tumblr media
Jeep Compass (2007–2017)The design of the current Jeep Compass is clean, decently proportioned, and appealingly upscale (in sharp contrast to the rest of the little crossover, which is decidedly down-market). Mostly, this is because the second-generation Compass resembles a smaller Grand Cherokee. Too bad the original Compass was the exact opposite, with a bug-eyed face, weird roofline, and blocky lower-body detailing. It sold in strong numbers from 2007 to 2017, though for the life of us we can't figure out why.Jeep
Tumblr media
Lamborghini LM002 (1986–1993)Cool can be ugly, and vice versa. And SUVs don’t come much cooler or much uglier than the Rambo Lambo. Angular to a flaw, the LM002 could use a curve or two. Its body panels are as flat as Fenway’s Green Monster. And the styling, such as it is, is applied liberally and seemingly without consideration. Hey, why not bend this that way, or toss an angle there? Originally designed for military use in the 1970s, Lambo built about 300 twelve-cylinder "civilian versions" from 1986 to 1993.Al Satterwhite
Tumblr media
Lexus LX570 (2012–present)If there’s one vehicle that combines everything wrong with Toyota and Lexus design over the last 30 years, it’s the current LX570. The luxurious Lexus version of the venerable Toyota Land Cruiser is now in its third generation and has been homely ever since it debuted in 2008. The LX grew downright grotesque in 2012 when, to the already cosmetically challenged SUV Lexus began adding mutations of its spindle grille along with low-hanging rocker trim. Today’s version of the SUV seems to be a caricature drawing of itself, and, wait, isn't it supposed to be for off-roading?Chris Doane Automotive - Car and Driver
Tumblr media
Lincoln MKT / Town Car (2010–present)Sometime around 2006, someone at Lincoln must have decided American luxury car buyers wanted a three-row SUV with the grin of a baleen whale and the appearance of having a loaded diaper. So began the development of what would become the 2010 Lincoln MKT (at least, so we think), which was based on the Ford Flex. A minivan-esque silhouette, grossly long overhangs front and rear, and, though we've already mentioned it, that awful grille are co-conspirators in the Lincoln's ugly play. Even though the MKT remains in production for fleets and hired-car services, it has never sold in respectable numbers; fewer than 3000 were bought last year.Lincoln
Tumblr media
Nissan Juke (2011–2017)According to Nissan, the Juke's greenhouse resembles the visor of a motorcycle helmet and the small SUV’s curvy fenders evoke the so-called "Coke bottle" styling popular in the late 1960s. It sound pretty cool, but in reality the Juke’s design is a hot mess, exacerbated by a painfully overdesigned, frog-like front end the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the Aztek was put down in 2005. Some people actually find the bug-eyed design cute. We don't.Nissan
Tumblr media
Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet (2011–2014)Allegedly, Nissan's now-former CEO Carlos Ghosn pushed the Murano CrossCabriolet into production because his wife liked the idea of it. Well, nobody (okay, almost nobody) else did. The two-door convertible crossover was a packaging disaster and visually challenged whether its cloth top was raised or stowed. Like the Aztek 10 years its senior, the Nissan became a punchline and it lasted just three years on the market before we had to say goodbye. Bizarrely, these days CrossCabriolets enjoy a cult following; meanwhile, Mr. Ghosn, for the first time, has bigger problems than being tangled up with the CrossCab's birth story.Nissan
Tumblr media
Subaru B9 Tribeca (2007–2014)Subaru claimed the B9 Tribeca's front-end design was inspired by Alfa Romeo race cars of the 1930s. And you could see the resemblance if you squinted really, really hard. The look, which debuted in 2006, triggered more gag reflexes than sales-or, maybe, it was the three-row crossover's inexplicable name-and an updated model with a less controversial face was rushed into production for the 2008 model year. At the same time, Subaru mercifully dropped the "B9" part from the Tribeca's name. Apparently, this arbitrage was enough; the SUV lasted essentially unchanged until its discontinuation in 2014.Subaru
Tumblr media
Suzuki X-90 (1995–1997)The next time someone tells you there is no such thing as a bad idea, show them a picture of the Suzuki X-90, a two-seat SUV with about the passenger and cargo space of a Mazda MX-5 Miata. Basically a chopped down Suzuki Sidekick, the X-90's tiny dimensions and odd proportions kept its appeal in check. With its narrow track, high stance and tall greenhouse it looked like roller-skate. It's of little surprise, then, that the Suzuki was only sold here from 1995 to 1997.
Tumblr media
Suzuki XL-7 (2007–2009)Automotive designers are always looking to other art disciplines for inspiration, and the designers of the Suzuki XL-7's second generation divined their vision from the face of rock god Alice Cooper. At least, they must've-how else can you explain the drooping, curvy headlights on the unpopular SUV? The XL-7 also features-if that's the right word-an oddly long nose and too long a wheelbase and overall length for its narrow gait.Suzuki

Everything You Need To Know About Cars From Toyota | cars from toyota
The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a acceptable one, with added new cars, trucks and SUVs than one could calmly agitate a stick at. Everything from the beastly Jeep Gladiator to the high-tech Rivian R1T, AutoMobility LA, as it’s additionally known, accepted why it’s one of the best important auto shows in the agenda year by bringing out article new to attract aloof about anybody who loves cars. Anyone who sets bottom in the Los Angeles Convention Center for the LA Auto Actualization from Nov. 30 to Dec. 9 during the show’s accessible canicule will not be disappointed.
182 Toyota Avensis | New Cars | Toyota Ireland – Cogans – cars from toyota | cars from toyota
While auto shows generally tend to end up absorption on a distinct agent chic — anticipate SUVs at the Chicago Auto Actualization or exotics at Geneva — the LA actualization didn’t assume to this year. But, as we abstruse from Seinfeld, article defective a axial focus can still be awful entertaining. With debuts alignment from the awful advancing Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator auto to the abutting Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s agents begin themselves ambrosial active putting their butts in all the new seats.
Here’s our assembly of the best important debuts so that you’ll apperceive what to attending out for if you acquisition yourself in LA or if you acquisition yourself arcade for a new ride in a few months. For alike added abundant look, be abiding to appointment our 2018 Los Angeles Auto Actualization landing folio — it’s a acceptable way to admission all the all-embracing advantage of all the alone models that we looked at this week.
The Audi E-Tron GT is still a abstraction car — and angelic hell is it a adorable one — admitting it will advance to a abounding assembly archetypal that launches in backward 2020. Its powertrain technology is carefully accompanying to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a acceptable thing. The key specs that you allegation to know: It’s got a 90-kWh array backpack giving it a 248-mile range, as able-bodied as 590 absolute arrangement application and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will advice Audi get against its ambition of affairs 20 electrified models by 2025, and if added of them attending like this, again we’re all for it.
We already adulation the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a aces convertible adaptation that can do 207 afar per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the berth 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can accessible or abutting in aloof 19 abnormal back traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Beneath the awning is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, acceptable for 626 application and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds added than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in aloof 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT fabricated its admission in Los Angeles during the anniversary of the show, but strangely, was not at the actualization itself.
BMW debuted its little affection out with a abounding calendar of hot new luxo-missiles, the best important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a adventitious to get abaft the caster of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA admission showed us the best advancing adaptation (so far) of the abutting 3 Series, which will accomplish 369 application from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can affirm that it’s abundant added absorbing in person, with its added advancing exoteric and interior.
BMW additionally had the new 8 Series Convertible on duke forth with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye backpack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can apprehend added about here.
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on auction in North America back 2016, but it hasn’t absolutely bent blaze with consumers (maybe it would if it looked added like the Multipla from the backward 1990s and aboriginal 2000s). For 2019, a active archetypal debuts with hardly altered looks, a new engine, accepted all-wheel drive and a abundantly simplified archetypal range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the agent bay, area the 1.4-liter turbocharged agent or 2.4-liter artlessly aspirated agent has been replaced with a distinct 1.3-liter turbo unit. Admitting the admeasurement reduction, the new agent absolutely produces a lot added torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should accomplish it feel sprightlier than aftermost year’s model, admitting the actuality that application charcoal bashful at 177.
For 2019, the six-speed chiral chiral has been nixed, acceptation it’s nine-speed automated or nothing. Front-wheel-drive configurations accept additionally been discontinued.
Toyota Cars in India – Prices (GST Rates), Reviews, Photos & More … – cars from toyota | cars from toyota
On the added side, a anew upgraded Uconnect 4 7-inch touchscreen infotainment arrangement comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, and adaptive cruise ascendancy and advanced esplanade abetment are now standard.
Honda’s Passport asleep in 2002, but the nameplate has been adored (with 100 percent below Isuzu) as a two-row, five-passenger crossover that slots in sizewise amid the CR-V and the Pilot, admitting it’s congenital on the aforementioned Honda Global Light Barter belvedere acclimated for the Pilot and Ridgeline. The Honda Passport will barrage aboriginal abutting year with rugged-adjacent looks and a 3.5-liter V6 agent churning out 280 application and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be able to tow as abundant as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will action all address of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport aggressive with the cast of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, admitting Honda’s access does assume a little added asperous than those entries.
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the aboriginal one to a brace who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s aboriginal able at a three-row SUV — you may anamnesis that the brief Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the added acknowledged three-row Santa Fe and its afresh renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does assume like an adorable and advised option.
Hyundai afresh told Roadshow that the midsize SUV articulation moves about 1.5 actor units per year in North America, so it will be absorbing to see how abounding of those sales the Palisade will abduction back it hits dealers abutting summer.
If this year’s LA Auto Actualization was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a auto barter in its calendar back the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche auto of the backward ’80s and aboriginal ’90s and if the internet’s acknowledgment to it is any affectionate of barometer, it’s activity to be a hit.
While it’s accessible to address off the Gladiator as aloof a Wrangler with a auto bed, there are a agglomeration of differences. For instance, it’s got a altered five-link rear abeyance bureaucracy and can tow abundant added than the accepted Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a burden of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 agent is standard, but we apperceive that a turbodiesel will be offered at a after date. Don’t authority your animation for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities alteration to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with accessible disposable hardtops and a folding bendable top, added the adeptness to ford 30 inches of baptize back you accept the boxy Rubicon model. Mopar additionally showed off a ton of alarming accessories that will advice accomplish your Gladiator altered on the trail.
Kia brought the new, third bearing of the Soul to the LA show. It has bluff styling, added tech and alike an X-Line alternative with a hardly added asperous attending (read: atramentous artificial fender trim). Powertrain choices comprise a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter Nu inline-four and a 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbo option. 2023 SEMA SHOW CREATES CONNECTIONS THAT DRIVE FUTURE SUCCESS FOR THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY
Tumblr media
DIAMOND BAR, Calif.

2018 LA Auto Show preview
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/2018-la-auto-show-preview/
2018 LA Auto Show preview
The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a good one, with more new cars, trucks and SUVs than one could easily shake a stick at. AutoMobility LA, as it’s also known, proved why it’s one of the most important auto shows in the calendar year by bringing out something new to entice just about everyone who loves cars. Anyone who sets foot in the Los Angeles Convention Center from Nov. 30 to Dec. 9 during the show’s public days will not be disappointed.
While auto shows often tend to end up focusing on a single vehicle class — think SUVs at the Chicago Auto Show or exotics at Geneva — the LA show didn’t seem to this year. But, as we learned from Seinfeld, something lacking a central focus can still be highly entertaining. With debuts ranging from the highly anticipated Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator pickup to the next Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s staff found themselves pretty busy putting their butts in all the new seats.
Here’s our roundup of the most important debuts so that you’ll know what to look out for if you find yourself in LA or if you find yourself shopping for a new ride in a few months. For even more detailed look, be sure to visit our 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show landing page — it’s a convenient way to access all the in-depth coverage of all the individual models that we looked at this week.
Audi
The Audi E-Tron GT is still a concept car — and holy hell is it a good-looking one — though it will lead to a full production model that launches in late 2020. Its powertrain technology is closely related to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a good thing. The key specs that you need to know: It’s got a 90-kWh battery pack giving it a 248-mile range, as well as 590 total system horsepower and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will help Audi get toward its goal of selling 20 electrified models by 2025, and if more of them look like this, then we’re all for it.
Bentley
We already love the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a fabulous convertible version that can do 207 miles per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the cabin 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can open or close in just 19 seconds when traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Under the hood is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, good for 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds heavier than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT made its debut in Los Angeles during the week of the show, but strangely, was not at the show itself.
BMW
BMW debuted its little heart out with a full lineup of hot new luxo-missiles, the most important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a chance to get behind the wheel of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA debut showed us the most aggressive version (so far) of the next 3 Series, which will make 369 horsepower from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can confirm that it’s much more interesting in person, with its more aggressive exterior and interior.
BMW also had the new 8 Series Convertible on hand along with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye pack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can read more about here.
Fiat
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on sale in North America since 2016, but it hasn’t quite caught fire with consumers (maybe it would if it looked more like the Multipla from the late 1990s and early 2000s). For 2019, a refreshed model debuts with slightly different looks, a new engine, standard all-wheel drive and a greatly simplified model range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the engine bay, where the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine or 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine has been replaced with a single 1.3-liter turbo unit. Despite the size reduction, the new engine actually produces a lot more torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should make it feel sprightlier than last year’s model, despite the fact that horsepower remains modest at 177.
For 2019, the six-speed manual transmission has been nixed, meaning it’s nine-speed automatic or nothing. Front-wheel-drive configurations have also been discontinued.
On the plus side, a newly upgraded Uconnect 4 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, and adaptive cruise control and front park assist are now standard.
Honda
Honda’s Passport expired in 2002, but the nameplate has been resurrected (with 100 percent less Isuzu) as a two-row, five-passenger crossover that slots in sizewise between the CR-V and the Pilot, though it’s built on the same Honda Global Light Truck platform used for the Pilot and Ridgeline. The Honda Passport will launch early next year with rugged-adjacent looks and a 3.5-liter V6 engine churning out 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be able to tow as much as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will offer all manner of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport competing with the likes of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, though Honda’s entry does seem a little more rugged than those entries.
Hyundai
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the first one to a couple who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s first crack at a three-row SUV — you may recall that the short-lived Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the more successful three-row Santa Fe and its recently renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does seem like an attractive and well-considered option.
Hyundai recently told Roadshow that the midsize SUV segment moves about 1.5 million units per year in North America, so it will be interesting to see how many of those sales the Palisade will capture when it hits dealers next summer.
Jeep
If this year’s LA Auto Show was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a pickup truck in its lineup since the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche pickup of the late ’80s and early ’90s and if the internet’s reaction to it is any kind of barometer, it’s going to be a hit.
While it’s easy to write off the Gladiator as just a Wrangler with a pickup bed, there are a bunch of differences. For instance, it’s got a unique five-link rear suspension setup and can tow much more than the standard Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a payload of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard, but we know that a turbodiesel will be offered at a later date. Don’t hold your breath for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities transfer to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with available removable hardtops and a folding soft top, plus the ability to ford 30 inches of water when you elect the tough Rubicon model. Mopar also showed off a ton of awesome accessories that will help make your Gladiator unique on the trail.
Kia
Kia brought the new, third generation of the Soul to the LA show. It has sharper styling, more tech and even an X-Line variant with a slightly more rugged look (read: black plastic fender trim). Powertrain choices comprise a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter Nu inline-four and a 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbo option. Kia also introduced the 2020 Soul EV, which has a 64-kWh battery pack that should yield a driving range of at least 200 miles, though we’re still waiting on an exact number. Speaking of electric Kias, there’s also a new Niro EV. Like the Soul EV, it has a 64-kWh battery pack and a motor rated for 201 horsepower; Kia says it will return 239 miles of range on a single charge. The hamsters, thankfully, were nowhere to be seen.
Lexus
The Toyota Land Cruiser-based Lexus LX 570 is old, though it has received three face-lifts over the past 11 years. Rather than bringing a redesign to the LA Auto Show, Lexus is just showed off the 2019 LX with a new appearance package called the Inspiration Series. In a nutshell, you’re dealing with an ordinary LX 570, but “murdered out” as the kids say, with blacked-out 21-inch wheels and a black grille, along with several other dark bits to peg the sinister meters. The Inspiration Series also pegs the price alarms with its $100,420 MSRP, but that’s due to a lot of bundled-in optional features.
Only 500 units of the LX Inspiration Series will be made, so place your orders now. While you’re at it, you can learn more about this special SUV here.
Lincoln
First shown in concept form this past March at the New York International Auto Show, the Lincoln Aviator was the belle of the ball with its head-turning looks and cutting-edge features. Now the production 2020 Aviator has been fully revealed, with three rows of seating, rakish design and two powertrain options.
Buyers can pick between a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, with either rear- or all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid option is rated for 450 horsepower and 600 pound-feet, though Lincoln hasn’t yet offered any details on electric driving range or efficiency. Other luxurious and high-tech features include the ability to use your smartphone as the car’s “key,” a four-corner air suspension that uses a camera to “read” the road and react to bumps proactively, a 28-speaker Revel audio system and Lincoln’s CoPilot360 Plus active-safety suite. The fact that Lincoln used the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the Aviator’s warning tones also truly resonates with our inner car nerds.
Mazda
The fourth-generation 2019 Mazda3 is now here, with both sedan and hatchback versions that follow the styling language previewed by the Mazda Kai concept shown at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The new car will go on sale in early 2019.
There are lots of changes beneath the surface, too. The Mazda3 base engine will still be a 2.5-liter inline-four, with either manual or automatic transmissions with six speeds. The 3 is also the first production Mazda to use the company’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine, which uses a supercharger and a mild-hybrid motor assist. As if that’s not enough, the Mazda3 also boasts an upgraded 8.8-inch infotainment system and an infrared eye-tracking Driver Monitoring System that can tell if the driver is looking away from the road.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-AMG used the LA show to reveal the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, which is an even more bonkers version of the already certifiable AMG GT R. There’s no power increase, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 still putting out 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, but the GT R Pro benefits from a revised coilover suspension, adjustable anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes and retuned dynamic engine mounts. It also adds the AMG Dynamics stability control system, which has Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master modes.
Along with the Pro, of course, AMG has updated all versions of the GT coupe and convertibles with tweaks like restyled headlights, a new rear diffuser, a fully digital instrument cluster and some other interior switchgear changes. Oh, and those vents on top of the fenders are totally making the Roadshow staff swoon.
Mini
Ever since the first Mini arrived in 1959, the brand has been no stranger to special editions. Yet another one will make its North American premiere at the 2019 LA Auto Show. The Mini John Cooper Works Knights Edition takes a run-of-the-mill John Cooper Works Hardtop and drizzles it with a black and silver shining-armor theme.
The Knights Edition also features a John Cooper Works variable exhaust straight out of the accessories catalog that will let you drive stealthily or broadcast to the world that you’re fine with being small and loud, like Gilbert Gottfried. Read more about the John Cooper Works Knights Edition here.
Nissan
Nissan is updating its “four-door sports car” for the 2019 model year, giving the Maxima a slightly revised look inside and out, as well as extra safety technology on the inside. There’s also a new Platinum Reserve style package and a new orange interior stitching for the SR trim level. The car still uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine that sends 300 horsepower to the front wheels. Similarly, the 2019 Nissan Murano crossover receives an update with new lights, new interior trim pieces and a new grille design. It also adds more safety technology, and even diamond-quilted leather in the top-tier Platinum model.
Porsche
Southern California has long been Porsche’s most important market, so it’s only fitting that the sports car maker would choose LA to unveil the next generation of its most storied model, the 911. The 2020 911 debuted in Carrera S and 4S guises, with a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six engine rated for 443 horsepower, which is 23 more than before. A new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch is your only transmission choice at launch, but Porsche promises a manual is on the way later.
At first blush the new 911 may not look that different than its predecessor, but the car is 1.77 inches wider up front with a bumper and headlight treatment reminiscent of the 993-generation 911 of the mid-1990s. It also has flush-mounted electric door handles and restyled, wide taillights. Extra technologies include features like a Wet Mode, which will adjust the stability and braking systems when it detects water on the road, and standard precollision braking.
Rivian
Electric-vehicle startup Rivian is used the LA show to reveal its R1T pickup truck and its R1S SUV. The pickup claims a 400-plus-mile range and a 0-60 time under 3 seconds, as well as impressive towing and payload ratings. The R1S is a three-row luxury crossover that is also designed for lots of off-roading. It’ll use the same motors and battery packs as the truck, though its driving range should be a little longer, at up to 410 miles of range if you elect the 180-kWh battery pack. When production time comes, Rivian has pledged to build its vehicles at the former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois. The R1T is due in fall 2020 and the R1S should come in early 2021.
Toyota
This is a huge year for Toyota at the LA Auto Show, with two major bread-and-butter debuts in the form of the all-wheel-drive Toyota Prius, which adds an electric motor to its rear axle to help it lure people away from crossovers, and the all-new 2020 Corolla Sedan, which also adds a hybrid powertrain for the first time in the US market. Those are all important debuts as they’re big sellers for Toyota and now will be even more appealing.
On top of that, Toyota is showing off the sporty-ish TRD versions of the Avalon and Camry.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen’s debut at the I.D. Buzz Cargo, the work-van version of the passenger van that debuted last year. In addition to looks that force you to be happy, the I.D. Buzz Cargo features a passenger compartment with three-across seating along with an electric driving range approaching 350 miles. The one at the show was gussied up to look like a racing support van and it made us feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.
We have a ton of additional information about the I.D. Buzz Cargo van, which you can check out here.
Volvo
Volvo brought a virtual reality demo of its fancy-pants 360c concept, a driverless car designed to leave the sensor hardware carbuncles behind for a smoother, less autonomous-looking (that is, more attractive) appearance. Other than that, Volvo isn’t planning to have any other production cars on display. It did, however, have a pile of Amazon boxes for people to sit on, so look forward to that, true believers.
Our editor-in-chief, Tim Stevens, recently got up close and personal with this innovative machine. You can read more about the autonomous 360c here.

7 Best Cars of the 2018 Japanese Automotive Invitational
During the Monterey Car Week, we partnered with Infiniti to highlight some of the most important Japanese cars ever made for an event called the Japanese Automotive Invitational (JAI). All of the cars featured at the two-day Pebble Beach event were chosen because they exemplified Japanese innovation, design, and performance. But even though each one was impressive in its own way, a few stood out to us as especially impressive. Read on to find out which cars we thought deserved extra recognition.
1967 Toyota 2000GT Roadster
The hardtop version of the Toyota 2000GT is already one of the most gorgeous Japanese cars ever made. Only 351 examples were built between 1967 and 1970, also making the 2000GT incredibly rare. The car shown here, however, is one of two 2000GT Roadsters built for the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Standing next to it, you could easily understand why Toyota had to cut the roof off to make room for Sean Connery to fit inside.
1968 Honda N600
As popular as cars such as the Accord and Civic are today, it’s hard to imagine a time when Hondas weren’t sold all across the country. But before the N600 went on sale in 1969, you couldn’t buy a Honda in the U.S. The N600 shown here was part of a group of early test vehicles and has the distinction of officially being the first Honda ever imported to the United States. It’s also so small that it makes the current Honda Fit look like a Hummer H1.
1968 Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S
The RX-7 and RX-8 were certainly Mazda’s most popular rotary-powered sports cars, but without the Cosmo Sport, they may have never been built. The Mazda Cosmo Sport is considered the first true sports car to use a rotary engine, but it also has the distinction of being the first rotary-powered production car from Japan and the first production car to ever use a twin-rotary engine. The design looks great in photos, but in person, it was truly incredible.
1969 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser
Most of the vehicles at this year’s JAI were cars, and for good reason. Japanese automakers have a long history of building some incredible sports cars, city cars, and practical-but-fun daily drivers. The Land Cruiser shown here, however, is one of the finest examples of Japan’s similarly long history of building some of the most rugged 4x4s you can buy. Even though this FJ40 is about to turn 50, it could still handle an off-road adventure.
1972 Nissan Skyline GT-R “Hakosuka”
No list of Japanese classics would be complete without a Skyline GT-R. Several versions could easily have been included in this list, but we especially liked this one. It was, after all, the car that introduced the GT-R nameplate to the Skyline. 1,113 were built, and this example’s Safari Gold paint makes it even rarer. Plus, those fender-mounted side-view mirrors look ridiculously cool.
1978 Dome Zero
Although all of the cars on this list are an important part of Japan’s automotive history, several are so important that they’re a little predictable. But there are also all sorts of cool, classic Japanese cars that are so rare, few Americans have seen them outside of a video game. This 1978 Dome Zero, for example, is a prototype sports car that never went into production despite the concept’s popularity and Dome’s experience building race cars. That’s too bad because the design really is still stunning all these years later.
1992 Toyota Eagle MKIII
This IMSA GTP Championship car was built and raced by none other than the legendary Dan Gurney’s All American Racers. It was Toyota’s first carbon-fiber monocoque prototype race car, and from 1992 to 1993, it proved to be one of the most dominant cars in its class. The Eagle MKIII won the championship both years, came in first in 21 of its 27 races, and even managed a 17-race win streak. It’s also a great example of Japan’s ability to build world-class race cars and not just road cars.

One Week With: 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California — Why does Toyota even still sell the Land Cruiser, anyway? It’s not an unreasonable question to ask. After all, sales added up to a mere 3,100 in 2017, making it one of the automaker’s slowest sellers. The short answer as to why there’s a 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser, however, is that there’s no reason for there not to be one. Allow me to explain.
Like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Land Cruiser has evolved way past its purpose-built roots. But while the casual observer would be hard-pressed to tell the all-new 2019 G from a 1979 one without looking inside, no such confusion is in store for the Toyota.
It hasn’t been a fast evolution. The 2018 model year is number 11 for the J200 Land Cruiser, the longest run since the J50’s 13-year stint from 1967 to 1980. And despite massive technological progress in the years since its launch, the sixth-generation Cruiser hasn’t changed all that much, and is in many ways a time capsule from the late 2000s.
Practically teleported from the Great Recession is the Land Cruiser’s 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V-8. Launched in 2007 for the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia, the naturally aspirated mill has gone unchanged since, with output staying at 381 hp and 401 lb-ft the entire time. An eight-speed automatic replaced the original six-speed in 2016, giving the old eight-cylinder a slight extension on its lease on life.
Despite the engine’s age, it does an admirable job of the primary task at hand, which is pulling 5,815-lb worth of SUV fast enough to safely accelerate into traffic. Don’t expect fast kickdowns and rapid turbo-spools when you mash the accelerator, as this is no EcoBoost-powered Ford Expedition or twin-turbo German.
Braking is basically the opposite of accelerating. The 13.9-inch front and 13.6-inch rear discs make the four 285/60R18 Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s stop spinning without undue discomfort, but you’ll want to avoid panic stops—the nose dives considerably thanks to its considerable weight and off-road-spec, hydraulically adjusted Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.
Boosting the vintage feel is Land Cruiser’s heavy and slow steering. An asset while crawling up a mountain, it is almost laborious to work while crawling through a parking lot—and there’s a slight excess of on-center play for comfort on the freeway.
The experience isn’t entirely devoid of modernity, however. Adaptive cruise control, pre-collision warning, and automated emergency braking are standard courtesy of the Toyota Safety Sense suite, for starters. There’s also a fresh version of Toyota’s Entune infotainment system with a 9.0-inch screen, multiple exterior cameras (on offer are front, side, and rear views), heated and ventilated front seats, and wireless charging. It’s a Lexus-esque feature list befitting the Land Cruiser’s Lexus-esque $84,890 base price.
Of course, nobody buys a Land Cruiser because it has a touchscreen and can cool your pants through its leather seats. There are plenty of choices that can do that while offering a more sumptuous and compliant ride. No, the special sauce here is the Range Rover-level capability that comes with it—highlights include full-time 4WD, crawl control, locking limited-slip center differential, the suspension’s ability to disconnect the anti-roll bars, and the Multi-Terrain Select system. That the number of new Land Cruisers in Orange County that will ever see proper dirt trails is close to zero is almost beside the point.
And therein lies part of the reason behind the Land Cruiser’s continued existence: branding. The second major part? There’s no downside for Toyota. It spends $0 on marketing for the Land Cruiser. Sticking with the same engine and design has limited the need for expensive crash and emissions testing, and most of the rest of the hardware has already been long since paid for. In short, a good chunk of the hefty sticker is no-effort profit.
Still, the forces of technology are progressing and the J200 is unlikely to have much life left. Updates made for 2016 give Toyota enough reason to keep it around until around 2020 or so.
As for a “J300,” well, the brand has been releasing plenty of concepts that draw on its off-road heritage as of late, so the outlook is positive. Just don’t be surprised if it comes with a plug for electricity or a pressurized tank for hydrogen. And given its history, it’ll likely come prepared to serve at least until 2030.
