Many of the other hybrid or electric alternatives feature much nicer cabins, making this a weak point for the Volt. There is a lot of hard plastic and few accents or embellishments. That serves as a significant effective price reduction for the vehicle, providing an extra financial incentive on top of the excellent fuel economy. Overall, it is both a powerful and convenient system, and is an added bonus to any Volt trim.Īs a hybrid vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt benefits from a variety of tax incentives and rebates from both local agencies and the federal government. It is controlled through a crisp and colorful 8-inch touchscreen that responds quickly and precisely to touch commands.

The 2018 Chevrolet Volt offers all of the latest necessities of a modern safety suite. The wind and road noise is also kept to a minimum, making for a very serene ride even at high speeds. The electric motor is noiseless, and the gasoline engine is very nicely insulated from the cabin. In both of its drive modes, the 2018 Chevrolet Volt is a very quiet vehicle. With a body that can easily pass for a normal gas-powered compact car, the Volt is attractive without being a statement piece. Usually, having very conventional styling is a downside for a vehicle, but with the most hybrids embracing unusual styling choices, the Volt is a distinctive outlier. Moreover, the shifts between the hybrid and all-electric mode are very seamless, so it is easy to forget that it is a hybrid vehicle while driving it. It does not feel sluggish or unresponsive, and has both lively acceleration and good handling. Unlike most hybrid vehicles, the 2018 Chevrolet Volt drives and handles very similarly to a normal car. Its electric mode is rated at 106 miles per gallon equivalents, while the engine-assisted hybrid mode nets it a combined rating of 42 miles per gallon.
2018 chevy volt full#
Whether in full electric or hybrid mode, the Volt is a very efficient car. That gives it both utility and versatility. The Volt, on the other hand, can be primarily operated as an electric-only vehicle, with the gasoline engine serving as a backup to extend the car’s range for longer trips, or in case of an emergency. Many of the electric vehicles available right now are either all-electric, which limits their range, or are hybrids that only use the electric motor for highway cruising or providing extra power and a gas mileage boost. It is higher than the all-electric range of most other mainstream electric and hybrid vehicles, making it a very appealing choice. For many drivers, that should easily cover the commute to and from work. The Chevrolet Volt can go for up to 53 miles on battery power alone, without engaging its gasoline engine. Compare & Save! Excerpt:
In cities, passenger vehicles and public transit fleets will have to move from fuel-burning engines to electrification, a “powerful measure to decarbonize short-distance vehicles,” according to the IPCC report.
Advocates for electric vehicles have been saying this for decades. Where do US cities stand in 2018 on electric vehicle adoption?
So far, progress has been wildly insufficient: In the US, close to 200,000 electric vehicles—both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) like the Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius Prime and battery-electric vehicles (BEV) like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S—were sold in 2017, out of 17,340,700 vehicles. That’s only 1.15 percent of all cars sold in 2017. But, to put that in perspective, that’s a 26 percent increase from 2016, and the trend is expected to continue, according to environmental advocates and EV industry experts.
For one thing, Americans really love to buy giant cars—crossover and SUV sales have more than doubled since 2010, and the “Big Three” American automakers keep doubling down on high-margin pickup truck offerings. So far, they have shown little interest in electrifying such large, heavy-duty vehicles. “In Texas you need a truck,” said Karl Popham, manager of EVs and emerging technologies at Utility Austin Energy. “If you don’t have an electric truck, we’re gonna continue to not see the pace needed for real growth.” And plug-in vehicles aren’t as climate-friendly in areas where the energy grid runs off coal. (Only 2 percent of the fuel mix in Florida’s energy grid, for example, is renewable.)
For EV adoption levels to reduce carbon emissions in a meaningful way, the EV market will need a massive push from every corner, from government initiatives to more affordable cars on the market to more public charging stations. Through the lens of the IPCC report, electrifying a small number of city fleets is small potatoes. Individual car owners need to make the switch, too, and fast, said Michelle Krebs, an executive analyst for Autotrader. Government “carrots” can help spur consumer adoption, she said, pointing to Norway, where EVs have a 22 percent market share due to strong incentives like no charges on toll roads or ferries, free municipal parking, and vehicle tax exemptions.

Residents are starting to move in to Florida’s new solar-powered eco-city
The future is bright (and solar-powered) at Babcock Ranch, a new eco-city located in southwestern Florida just 13 miles from Fort Myers and three hours from Miami. The Miami Herald reports that Babcock Ranch’s first residents are moving in this week to the development, which is largely powered by what developer Developer Syd Kitson claims is the world’s biggest photovoltaic solar energy generation field.
Walkways and green space are built into the plans for Babcock Ranch, which is slated to encompass 19,500 homes, 6 million square feet of retail, and 50,000 inhabitants when it’s completely finished in 25 years. See renderings of Babcock Ranch here.

Why reducing carbon emissions from cars, trucks and ships will be so hard
The race to get rid of transportation emissions is getting off to a slow start. AP Photo/Terrin Waack
A growing number of cities, states and countries aim to dramatically reduce or even eliminate carbon emissions to avert catastrophic levels of climate change.
Ideas about how to get this done as soon as possible, including those Democratic lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have sketched out in the Green New Deal framework. But most energy experts see two basic steps as essential.
First, stop relying on fossil fuels to generate most electricity. Second, the whole world should – sooner rather than later – use all that cleaner electricity to power transportation, agriculture and the heating and cooling of homes and businesses. The logical goal should be to get as many consumers to buy zero-emission vehicles as quickly as possible, right?
Maybe not. Our research on consumer behavior and the environmental impacts of automotive transportation leads us to expect that the transition to electric cars, trucks and ships will be dramatically harder that it sounds.
Tailpipe emissions
The roughly 250 million cars, SUVs and pickup trucks on U.S. roads today account for 60% of transportation emissions. The 11.5 million big trucks that move freight around generate another 23% and aircraft are responsible for 9% of those greenhouse gas emissions.
One reason why it will be hard if not impossible to convert all U.S. transportation to electric models within a decade or two is simple. Vehicles of all kinds are surprisingly durable.
We’ve determined that the average American car, truck and SUV remains in use for 16.6 years with many logging 200,000 miles or more.
When we researched how fast the nation’s entire fleet turns over, we found that even if every U.S. vehicle sold were electric starting today, it would take until 2040 for 90% of vehicles in use to be electric.
U.S. sales of electric drive vehicles have grown steadily since the all-electric Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid launched in 2010. In 2018, Americans bought 361,307 battery-powered plug-in electric cars, and 2,300 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which like EVs produce no tailpipe emissions. Yet even following a big spike in sales in 2018 when Tesla’s mass-market Model 3 was launched, EVs still only account for less than 2% of new vehicle sales.
The reality is most Americans buying new passenger vehicles today are shopping for gasoline-fueled SUVs and pickup trucks.
EV improvements
Cheaper batteries, government subsidies and corporate innovation have all made EVs much more affordable and functional.
Owning EVs, however, remains inconvenient. There are too few charging stations to make these vehicles viable for everyone and EV driving range declines significantly in cold weather.
Also, with less than 0.5 percent of the vehicles on the nation’s roads being electric, EVs don’t yet strike most Americans as mainstream. What’s more, vehicles that run gasoline are getting more fuel-efficient, and gas prices are at historically low levels, diminishing the financial appeal of EV ownership.
The average American vehicle remains in use for 16 years or more. AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli
Government incentives
The federal government has been giving EV buyers a $7,500 tax credit since 2010 that encourages more drivers to plug in. But the policy was designed to be phased out: Once a manufacturer sells 200,000 EVs, this incentive is phased out for their customers over the following 12 months. GM and Tesla, the two companies that have done the most to sell EVs in the U.S., will lose access to this incentive first unless legislation pending in Congress becomes law.
Smaller tax credits are available for plug-in hybrids. However well-intentioned, this bias may be unhelpful because Americans who buy new vehicles have largely demonstrated they just aren’t ready to make the leap to going fully electric yet.
States are also providing incentives. California, Oregon and eight Northeastern states follow the Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate that requires automakers to sell increasing numbers of EVs. The rest of the country follows the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, which instead require automakers to reduce the average emissions from the new vehicles they sell.
Seriously trying to reduce the carbon footprint of American transportation would require much more predictable policies sending a strong signal to American drivers that their next car should be environmentally friendly. A carbon tax, in our view, would work better than complicated fuel-economy regulations. But even if one could be implemented in the U.S., it might not suffice.
Ultimately, the switch from fossil-fueled to electric vehicles is a classic chicken-and-egg problem. Most drivers won’t let go of their gas tanks until they are confident that finding a place to quickly charge their automotive batteries will be as easy as finding a gas station is today. But no one will spend the money building all that charging infrastructure until there’s a bigger market.
The government can help solve this problem by subsidizing the chickens or the eggs or both. But before that happens, there would need to be more consensus on what the future carbon-free technology will look like. Battery-powered EVs are currently ahead of the pack, but many advocates of vehicles powered by hydrogen still trust that their technology of choice will take off.
Pragmatic solutions
One strategy we think could help is actively encouraging drivers to buy plug-in hybrid vehicles. These vehicles can go up to 50 miles or more without burning any gasoline, further than the 31.5 miles average driving Americans travel daily.
Yet they still have a gasoline engine to overcome any range anxiety that drivers may experience brought about by the lack of recharging infrastructure they may encounter on long trips.
Getting drivers to buy more plug-in hybrids would also help to bring about a complete transition to purely electric mobility by continuing to bring down the cost of key components such as batteries, and building demand for charging stations from coast to coast.
Finally, we believe that strong new government incentives would be required to eliminate emissions from freight-hauling trucks. The trucking industry is taking steps in that direction, such as Tesla’s plans to roll out big electric rigs and Toyota’s partnership with the Kenworth Truck Co. to make 18-wheelers powered by hydrogen fuel cells. But progress is slow.

During Drive Revolution, auto manufacturers vie for top awards for their unique and clean vehicles. This annual event, organized by the Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA), showcases the latest and greatest “green cars” vehicles (at varying price points) including full-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, regular hybrids, or eco-friendly luxury rollers.
This year’s Drive Revolution was held just across the river from Portland at The Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, WA. This historical site offered a fantastic back-drop to review and drive each vehicle. Member journalists scored each vehicle category and the winners were chosen based on numerous factors such as price, MPG-e (miles per gallon equivalency) ratings, powertrain scores, braking, ride/handling, interior comfort/tech, and overall tech scores.
There were 19 vehicles in total, from four different classes:
Affordable Battery Electric Vehicles
Affordable Hybrid Cars
Family-Sized Plug-In Hybrid
Luxury Green Vehicles
While those attending test drive many of the vehicles entered during other times of the year, this event gives them the opportunity to drive them back-to-back. It’s interesting how each auto manufacturer answers: interior and exterior styling, batteries and range if plug-in or EV, techy bits, etc. The 2018 Drive Revolution “Green Vehicles of the Year” are:
Northwest Affordable Battery-Electric Vehicle of the Year: 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV
The 2018 Chevy Bolt was very responsive and engaging on tarmac toured at Drive Revolution. This rock-solid and hip hatchback was a hoot to drive. The Bolt is easy to see out of, has oodles of safety features, and with an electric range of 238 miles, can be driven long distances without range anxiety. That gets top honors in our book. Without tax incentive deductions the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV tops out at just over $40,000 (MSRP).
Northwest Affordable Hybrid Car of the Year: 2018 Chevrolet Volt
Chevrolet brought two category-winning vehicles to Drive Revolution. The 2018 Chevy Volt LT is a spacious sedan boasting lots of tech and connectivity features, such as Chevrolet MyLink (capable of linking various smart phones), XM Radio, On Star, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. This 106 MPG-e grocery getter has all the modern amenities one is looking for these days starting under $35,000.
Northwest Family-Sized Plug-In Hybrid of the Year: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
A clear winner in the family-sized facet of Drive Revolution was the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid. Pacifica has impressive styling and quality and handling that you’d never guess it’s a minivan. Chrysler has given the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid a slew of family-friendly safety features, such as automatic stopping while reversing and rear cross path detection. The Pacifica’s thoughtful design, safety features, and attention to detail were outstanding make it worth the $39,995 MSRP
“The Pacifica Hybrid’s 84 mpg-e and 33 miles of all-electric range saves you hundreds in fuel costs each year over the average new minivan or SUV,” said Sarah Shelton from U.S. News & World Report.
Northwest Luxury Green Vehicle of the Year: 2018 Lexus LS 500h
In Drive Revolution’s luxury category, the 2018 Lexus LS 500h stood out. Lexus imbued the LS 500h with beautiful designs, a solid drive quality, and an attention to detail needed in the vehicles nearing the $80,000 price tag. Heated, massaging driver’s seat were wonderful after a long day of test-driving cars. Lexus gave the LS 500h a sporty 3.5 liter 24-valve V6 with various driving modes (Eco/Normal/Sport), making it easy to adjust its performance to your driving style.
Northwest Green Vehicle of the Year: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
Fiat-Chrysler hit the ball out of the park with the 2018 Pacifica. The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, winner of the 2018 NW Green Vehicle of the Year award, has a low entry cost compared to other premium minivans and is the most eco-friendly vehicle in the minivan segment. Parents will appreciate the easy-to-remove seating, available rear-seat entertainment systems, and the intuitive Uconnect infotainment system for drivers and front-seat passengers.
“What’s particularly remarkable is that you can achieve this fuel economy while also carrying a family of seven in the front and a suitcase for everyone in the back,” Shelton continued. “This, along with a notable amount of standard equipment, makes the Pacifica Hybrid a truly family-friendly vehicle.”

Why I bought Honda's plug-in hybrid mystery car
At Christmastime, in the noble tradition of proud parents everywhere, I unloaded — I mean, generously donated — my 2009 Honda Fit to my college-student son.
That gesture wasn’t pure, heart-warming nobility; I wanted a new car. Specifically, an electric car.
I don’t know if you’re aware of how juicy the deals are on these things. Obviously, the main reason you’d get one is because they’re much better for the environment. (Yes, they run on electricity, which still requires burning some fossil fuels to generate — but the impact of electric cars is drastically lower than gas cars.)
But even if you don’t care about being green, an EV (electric vehicle) still get you all of this:
A tax credit from the Federal government. That’s not a tax deduction, which lowers your income before you calculate the tax. It’s a tax credit, which is money in your pocket after taxes. Depending on the car’s electric range, it’s up to $7,500.
Money back from the state. Forty-five states currently offer juicy EV incentives, usually cash. I live in Connecticut, where it’s $2,000. Nothing to do with taxes — it’s just a check they send you.
You save tons of gas money. Electric-car owners never, ever pay for gas.
Special parking places. My Connecticut town is more progressive than most, but it’s got dedicated electric-car parking spaces at the grocery, library, train stations, town hall, and so on. They’re right next to the handicap spaces, and each one has a charging station. Free electricity while you’re shopping!
Drive alone in the carpool lane. Many states welcome EVs to the carpool (HOV) lane.
The brakes last, like, forever. When you brake, magnets capture your momentum and use it to recharge the battery, saving the brake pads.
They ZOOM! An electric car has incredible torque (translation: instant acceleration). They are fun!
They’re silent. There’s no engine noise, obviously. You hear only a faint hum/whine when you put the pedal down. Your music sounds that much better.
Owning a plug-in means remembering to plug in.
Of course, we all know why more people aren’t buying electric cars: range anxiety. Unless you’ve got something like a Tesla or a Chevy Volt (over 200 miles on a charge), you’re limited in the drives you can take. And it’s not like you can pull into a station and refuel in five minutes. You have to plan your life around charging stops: lunch, overnight stays. It’s a hassle.
But here’s the point of this article: There is a way to get all the advantages of electric without the range anxiety: plug-in hybrids. (Geeks call them PHEVs, for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Man, they really need a catchier name.)
A plug-in hybrid is electric with a gas-engine backup. Once the big battery’s dead, the car becomes a regular hybrid, like a Prius or whatever. Amazingly, the gods of legislation have determined that these cars are entitled to all the same goodies that pure electrics are.
In a plug-in hybrid, you have two “fuel gauges” one each for battery charge (left) and gas level (right).
You can plug in one of these cars into a standard power outlet in your garage, as you would a lamp or something; it charges overnight. Or you can install a 240-volt outlet, like the one for a refrigerator; the car charges in a couple of hours. (Handily enough, public charging stations are 240V, too.)
There are lots of plug-in hybrid models. As a handy benefit, most of them are loaded with the latest autonomous safety features:
Lane keeping. If you start to drift out of the lane without your blinker on, the car warns you and guides you back into the lane.
Collision avoidance. If you’re coming too fast toward a slowing car ahead, the car warns you and actually brakes for you to avoid a collision.
Adaptive cruise control. You set a speed you want to maintain — let’s say 65 mph. At that point, the car speeds up and slows down (even stopping, if necessary) as necessary to avoid hitting the car in front of you. A button on the wheel controls how many car lengths you want your car to hang back.
Self-parking. Well, sort of: The car turns the wheel for you, but you still have to manage the shift lever and gas/brake pedals.
Here’s the journal of my quest to buy the perfect plug-in hybrid family car — and why we wound up buying an obscure, no-name Honda in the end.
Prius Prime
My wife and I started with a test drive at the local Toyota dealership. Our other car is a Prius, which we’ve always loved. (If the Tesla 3 I ordered two years ago ever shows up, we’ll sell the Prius.)
Anyway, we liked the looks of the Prius Prime, a plug-in hybrid. OK, we didn’t actually like the looks, but — you know.
The Prius Prime has a distinctive, polarizing look.
Here’s what we loved about this car:
The price. The base model is $27,100. The Federal tax credit is $4,500 for this model. With the Connecticut kick-in, my final price would be $20,600.
The hybrid MPG. You go 25 miles on pure electric; after that, the hybrid (gas-and-electric) mode gets an amazing 55 miles a gallon. Total range is 640 miles on one gas tank, which is extraordinary.
The wireless phone charger. If you have a recent iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, for example, you can just set it down in the center console — it instantly starts to charge, magnetically.
Why don’t all cars have Qi wireless phone charging pads built-in?
Cool smart stuff. Lane-departure warning, front-collision braking, and automatic high beams are all included in the base model.
The heads-up display. Just as on a fighter jet, the Prime can project important stats in space in front of the driver — your charge status, speed, current speed limit. It seems to hover a few feet in front of the windshield.
Here’s what we didn’t love:
It’s a four-seater. My wife and I have a blended family with, on and off, five kids. We’d really miss a fifth seat.
The trunk is the size of a subatomic particle. The batteries in this baby take up most of what would have been the trunk. We sometimes have to drive to our kids’ colleges in Massachusetts and Vermont, loaded up with stuff. That wasn’t gonna work.
25-mile electric range. That’s really not a lot. Would 25 miles cover your commute both ways? Remember that cold weather can cut your battery capacity in half.
All touchscreen. No volume knob at all. Auuugh! And no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
As on a Tesla, most of the Prius Prime’s controls have been moved to a touchscreen, meaning you have to take your eyes off the road to use them.
The ride. Man, this car hates rough pavement. It’s a bumpy ride. Also, as Car & Driver puts it, this is no sports car. “You buy this car to pass gas stations, not other vehicles.”
The good stuff costs. The heads-up display, phone charger, self-parking, and blind-spot monitor stuff are available only on the higher-end models, which erase a lot of the price advantage.
Chevy Volt
Man, if you want electric range (and you do), it’s hard to beat the Chevy Volt. This baby goes 53 miles on pure electric, more than any other PHEV. For a lot of people, especially commuters, that should cover it most of the time. (It’s easy to confuse this car with the Chevy Bolt, which is all electric — 238 miles of range, no gas hybrid mode.)
We took a test drive, and concluded that we loved these things about the 2018 Volt:
53-mile pure electric range. Of course, that also means it takes longer to charge fully: 13 hours on 120V, and 4.5 on 240V.
Super fun to drive. It’s a great ride.
It looks amazing. It’s a great-looking car.
The Chevy Volt looks awesome, even in a dealership parking lot in winter.
There’s also, unfortunately, quite a bit not to like:
It’s another four-seater. Chevy says it seats five, but that’s hilarious. You’d fit in the back middle seat only if you were a Barbie doll. Even the two actual rear seats are super-cramped; at 6 feet 2 inches, my head was mashed firmly against the roof.
The Chevy Volt’s back seat isn’t made for tall people.
It’s claustrophobic. Visibility is not good from the driver’s position.
It’s pricey. The base price is $34,100 — that’s $7,000 more than the Prius Prime. If you want the self-driving stuff (lane keeping, forward collision avoidance, self parking), the grand total is $40,000! Yeah, the tax credits and refunds will help, but… wow. This is a subcompact car.
The marketplace
We sat down that night to look at our other options. There’s a huge range of plug-in hybrids available; here’s a sample, showing base price and electric range. Notice anything in common with their all-electric ranges?
Audi A3 eTron: $37,900, 16 miles
BMW 330e: $44,100, 14 miles
Chrysler Pacifica (minivan!!): $42,000, 33 miles
Ford C-Max Energi SE: $27,120, 20 miles
Ford Fusion Energi: $31,100, 22 miles
Hyundai Sonata PHEV: $34,600, 27 miles
Hyundai Ioniq PHEV: $25,000, 29 miles
Kia Optima PHEV: $35,210, 29 miles
MiniCooper S E Countryman: $36,800, 18 miles
Volvo XC90 (SUV): $67,800, 14 miles
Those are puny ranges! What’s the point of a plug-in when you can drive only 9 miles in cold weather?
The Honda Clarity
In late December, we were just about to pull the trigger on the Chevy Volt when my wife suggested one final Google search. And incredibly, something popped up that I hadn’t seen before: Something called the Honda Clarity.
The Honda Clarity’s front half looks better than the back half.
It seemed to have everything we wanted: Room for five adults, full-sized trunk, all the cool autonomous features included in the base model, and 47 miles of electric range! That would make it the No. 2 longest-range plug-in hybrid on the market — and the only midsize, five-adult car with that kind of range.
I found that bizarre, and I still do. Why does the industry think nobody wants a family car with great electric range?
The weird thing is that this car was a total mystery. There was nothing about it online. No reviews —only a few blogger descriptions of a test-driving event Honda staged last fall. The local dealers didn’t know anything about it. There were no ads or marketing of any kind.
(Part of the confusion, no doubt, is that there are two other Honda Clarities: One’s pure electric, and one runs on hydrogen!)
We found a dealer an hour away with one Clarity in stock, and took it for a test drive. The car was an utter mystery to our salesman. He told us, for example, that the car is three feet longer than the Chevy Volt (it’s actually one foot longer), and that it takes 19 hours to charge (it actually takes 12, or 2.5 hours with a 240V outlet). He had no idea how to turn on the autonomous features. And the car hadn’t been charged, so we had to take our test drive on gas (42 mpg).
Here’s what we loved:
The ride. Maybe it’s because this is a midsize, and most of the others are compacts — but man, what a glorious ride. It floats like a magic carpet, except that you still have a great feeling of the road. And it’s soquiet on electric! Combine that with the zoomy acceleration from a stop (232 foot-pounds of torque, if you’re scoring at home), and you’ve got a really fun car to drive.
The space. Our kids have never known anything but compact cars. They could not believe the headroom and legroom when they climbed in.
Nobody will complain of being crowded in the Honda’s back seat.
The trunk. It’s really big. But it’s weirdly shaped. It has a secondary sub-trunk, accessed with a trapdoor, and when the seats are folded down, the pass-through hole to the front is bizarrely shaped. But yeah — plenty of suitcases.
The Honda’s trunk is vast and deep, if weirdly shaped.
Adaptive cruise control. Unlike most cars with this feature, the Clarity’s adaptive cruise works even at low speeds, like in stop-and-go suburban traffic. It works really well. I use it a lot.
Blind-spot screen. When you turn on the right turn signal, the dashboard screen becomes a closed-circuit TV, showing you your right-side rear view. No more blind spot! (There’s nothing equivalent when you turn left, alas.)
Cup-holder cup holders. Each cup holder has two flip-out tabs to accommodate taller or narrower cups and bottles. A clever touch.
The Honda’s cup holders have flip-out tabs.
Auto-lock and unlock. The car unlocks itself as you approach (with the key fob on you), and can also auto-lock once you’re 15 feet away.
Phone pockets in the back. Such a little thing, but so great: A place to hold the back-seaters’ phones to get them out of the way.
A place to hold your phone while it’s charging.
Smart fob. You get two key fobs with the car, labeled Driver 1 and Driver 2. As you approach the car, it unlocks automatically, of course — but it also moves the driver’s seat into your preferred position and angle automatically, as memorized by your fob. (The fob should also adjust the rear-view and side mirrors, temperature, and radio stations for each driver, too. Well, someday.)
That wide button pops open the electric charging socket; the fan button warms up (or cools down) the car before you get in it.
Bio–plastics. The fabric surfaces inside are made of plants, not petroleum; on the high-end model, the dash is covered by suede, which looks and feels cool and is made of recycled material.
LED lights. All the lights — front, rear, turn signals — are LEDs, and they look awesome.
All the lights are LED and cool-looking.
All the goodies. So much stuff is included in the base model ($33,400)! Lane-keeping, front-collision auto-braking, adaptive cruise control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch touchscreen that’s not horrible. (There’s no volume knob, but a physical volume control is on the steering wheel.) Automatic high-beam dimming. Automatic rear-view-mirror dimming at night. Side-mirror heating, front-seat heating.
The Clarity’s drive shifter is electronic—buttons, not a shift stalk—which makes it clearer when you’re putting it in reverse.
The price. At $33,400, the Clarity is pricier than the Prius Prime ($27,100), but it definitely beats the much smaller Chevy Volt, comparably equipped ($40,000). The Clarity also earns the full $7,500 back from the government, plus, in my case, $2,000 back from the state of Connecticut. My final price would be $23,900.
The Touring model ($36,600) adds eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seats, a built-in navigation system, and remote-control heating/cooling (you hit a button on the fob while you’re finishing breakfast).
We quickly found a few things we didn’t like, too:
It’s kind of ugly in back. The car looks great from the front, but the back end strikes us as weird/ugly. Some of that comes from aerodynamics: The back wheels are partly covered, for example; the bottom of the car is completely enclosed and flat; and funny little wind intake holes are tucked in the grille and in front of the rear wheel.
Lane assistance barely works. When the Clarity starts to creep out of the lane, it’s supposed to alert you (by vibrating the wheel and flashing a warning) and auto-steer gently back into the lane. It works amazingly well — when it works. But it doesn’t kick in until you’re going over 45 mph, and even then, it doesn’t seem to notice when it’s creeping over a yellow center line.
Occasional engine noise. When the gas has to kick in, it can be loud, and out of proportion to the accelerator position.
The paddles. Behind either side of the steering wheel, your fingers easily reach two paddles. They govern regenerative coasting, in four levels. That is, tug the left paddle four times, and your car reallyslows down during coasting (to recharge the battery more); tug the right one to lighten up. That setting resets to 0 when you next use the accelerator, though. Honda told me that “this feature can be especially useful as you drive downhill,” but using the brake also recharges the battery, so… why?
No self parking. Oh well.
No USB in back. There’s a cigarette-lighter charger in the back for the kids’ phones — but why on earth no USB jacks?
The name Clarity. My wife thinks it sounds like an antihistamine.
The biggest adjustment we had to make was accepting that the Clarity is a midsize car. Obviously, that’s why we get such great interior space, but it also means a wider turning radius and tighter parking. Mainly, my wife and I both grew up thinking that bigger cars equals worse bad fuel economy. It’s a mind-fuddler to realize that this is our green car!
So guess what? We bought it.
My first time parking the Clarity at an “EV CARS ONLY” spot!
Two months in
All of that happened the first week of January. I’m happy to report that some reviews for the Clarity are finally starting to appear online (spoiler: they like it too), and Honda Inc. is starting to do some marketing and dealer training, too. I guess we were just geniuses, buying this car before the world knew it was great.
The good news is that owning a plug-in hybrid is exactly what it’s cracked up to be: Super fun to drive, instant acceleration, and NO GAS STATIONS. We come home, we plug in the cable, we never use gas. We drive it every day, and we’ve refilled the gas tank once in two months (I had to drive to JFK airport in freezing weather).
We charge the car from an ordinary 3-prong wall outlet on the garage.
The dealers I interviewed for the video above all say that consumers aren’t jumping on PHEVs the way you’d expect. It’s because people don’t know about plug-in hybrids, or don’t understand them, or don’t like change.
Well, if that’s you, change your mind; you’re crazy not to look into this category. Who doesn’t like saving money and getting a zippier car?
All three dealers also said I should have leased the car instead of buying it, because technology is moving along so quickly, this car will seem out of date in a few years. Of course, that’s what a dealer would say, right? But it’s something to consider.
Then again, if it gets to the point where I can’t stand having an ancient 2018 car, I won’t be stuck with it. I’ve got three more kids who will one day head off to college.

Ford, Chevy and Ram trucks all getting updates

Pickups have long been the U.S. auto industry's hardest-fought sector, with stakes so high that no potential advantage is seen as too costly and no gain goes uncontested. But the competition will be even more heated in 2018 as Ford, General Motors and FCA US pursue new strategies for their truck lineups.
GM made a splash in Texas this month by showing off its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, which it promised will be leaner and meaner when it debuts late next year. Ford will lob two shells into the segment in 2018: a light-duty diesel for its F-150 and the return of the midsize Ranger to challenge GM's Colorado/Canyon combination.
And FCA will throw the first full redesign of its Ram 1500 pickup since the 2009 model at its two crosstown competitors in January. Then, late in the year, it will introduce the first midsize Jeep pickup in a couple of decades.
"The pickup truck segment has reached into a hypercompetitive mode, and consumers are benefiting from more power, improved fuel economy and increased comfort," said Dave Sullivan, senior analyst at AutoPacific. "What's interesting is that all three pickups are really deviating from each other. They are all going their own way when it comes to materials, powertrains and drivetrains."
The full-size pickup segment has grown 5.5 percent through November, while the overall light-truck market — which includes crossovers and SUVs — is up 4.7 percent, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Those hot segments stick out in a U.S. market off 1.4 percent this year, mainly because of much weaker car demand.
But regardless of roiling segments, there is no doubt that pickups are the U.S. kings: The Ford F series has been the nation's top-selling vehicle for nearly four decades, with the Silverado now at No. 2, followed by the Ram pickup.
Sales of the F series have risen 10 percent through November, while Ram sales are up 3.2 percent. Silverado sales have slipped 0.5 percent from a year ago and the GMC Sierra has fallen 3.5 percent.
The Toyota Tundra has gained in the segment, with sales up 1.4 percent through November, but it remains far below the fourth-place Sierra.
Nissan Titan sales have more than doubled from a year ago, yet Nissan's full-size pickup volume remains a fraction of its domestic competitors.
One long-sought number remains out of reach for the pickup contenders: an EPA rating of 30 mpg in highway driving. Yet that milestone could be attained in 2018 with the latest pickups. Some analysts speculated Ford would achieve the feat with its change to aluminum. But the 2018 F-150 is rated at 26 mpg in highway driving with a 2.7-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.
The current-generation 2018 Ram 1500 with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine gets up to 29 mpg with an aerodynamics package, while the Ram's 3.6-liter V-6 engine is rated at 25 mpg highway. Both Ram models come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Silverado is rated at 24 mpg highway with a 4.3-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.
Mixed materials
GM's slippage in the segment this year may have been motivation to lift the veil early on its redesigned Silverado this month, nearly a year ahead of its planned production. Chevrolet said it would use mixed materials to shed weight, boost fuel economy and enhance functionality of its twin pickups.
Chevrolet did not specify how much steel and aluminum will be used on the new truck, but it's expected to be a mix of both materials and other lightweight components.
GM said changes in engineering and materials will result in "a significant reduction in total vehicle weight" and "improved performance in many measures." Eventually, the company is expected to offer a pickup bed that uses carbon fiber.
Alan Batey, president of GM's North America operations, said the automaker's next-generation pickup will have "a stronger, roll-formed steel alloy for the bed and floor, contributing to a cargo box that is both lighter and even more functional than ever before."
Rangers, diesels
Since the F series was redesigned in 2014 and given an aluminum body, Ford has added features nearly every model year, including a 10-speed transmission, a Raptor performance variant and swankier trims.
Spring will mark the first time in the F-150's storied history that it is available with a diesel, though performance details have not been released.
Later in the year, Ford will begin building Ranger midsize pickups in the U.S. for the first time since 2011, competing with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Overall, Ford expects to sell just shy of 900,000 F-series trucks in 2017, not far off its record of nearly 940,000 in 2004.
"Certainly, there will be activity," said Todd Eckert, Ford's truck marketing manager. "But at the same time ... we really feel like we have an outstanding lineup to be competitive like we have been. That's what leaders do, and we're very confident in our product going forward."
Eckert said Ford will try to stay disciplined on incentives as Ram and Chevy likely put more cash on the hood to help move old models off dealer lots.
"Affordability continues to be very important, but we continue to feel very strong about our product and it fitting the needs of our customers, and that's how we'll continue to go to market," Eckert said.
FCA will reveal the details of its redesigned Ram 1500 at the Detroit auto show and likely will begin producing it the same week. Spy photographers caught much of the Ram 1500's new styling after a strong breeze blew the cover off a preproduction model this fall, revealing many secrets.
Under the hood, the next-generation Ram will have upgraded engines, complete with a 48-volt mild-hybrid belt-start generator system to improve fuel economy, as well as improved suspension systems.
It's also expected to shed weight from current versions, have a larger crew cab and come with the latest version of FCA's Uconnect infotainment system to go with a reworked interior.
FCA will continue to produce its current-generation DS Ram 1500 for at least a year while production of the new DT ramps up at a retooled plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., in suburban Detroit. The move should enable Ram to produce record numbers of pickups, with the current version packing the lower end of the trim and price spectrum.
In the fourth quarter of 2018, about the time the next-generation Silverado and Sierra are hitting the market, FCA will start building the Scrambler, a Wrangler-based pickup. The Scrambler will feature a midsize pickup bed attached to a four-door cabin similar to the 2018 Wrangler Unlimited. It also will carry the Wrangler's off-road suspension system.
Largely because of the Jeep badge, FCA expects to be able to sell the Scrambler at a substantial premium compared with competitors in the medium pickup segment.

2017 Assembly District 51 Candidate: Ron Birnbaum
Candidate campaign page: http://birnbaumforassembly.com/
A physician with a focus on universal healthcare, Ron Birnbaum has worked to educate himself on the intersectional aspect of transportation policy. In his response to Bike The Vote L.A., he expresses his vision for healthier, more walkable and bikeable communities connected by public transportation. Bike The Vote L.A. appreciates Birnbaum’s commitment towards bike share and an ‘Idaho Stop’ law, and sees promise in his evolving support for Vision Zero.
Bike The Vote L.A. 2017 Primary Grade: B
(See below for full candidate questionnaire response)
1. What future do you see for active mobility, and public transit in the daily lives of Angelenos, particularly those who lack access to cars and rely on these other modes as their primary way of getting around?
I would like to see Los Angeles (and all America) move in the direction of thoughtfully generated increased urban density that meets the human need for housing and that comes with walkability, bikeability, easily accessible and safe greenspace, and a robust system of public transportation. I would love this to be complemented by a joyful and vibrant street life.
2. Do you support Vision Zero, an approach to street safety that treats each fatality as preventable and seeks to eliminate traffic deaths on public roads?
I support it. It fits a model of harm reduction and data driven governance that I respect. However, as we discussed, I would stress that it needs to be implemented with really robust community consultation and buy-in. Traffic and commute times are real problems for real people. We should not hold up progress because it comes with "side-effects" but we should always more to minimize them and also realize that residents who are bought-in and well-informed will be willing to make sacrifices of some things for the achievement of shared goals that speak to them. Implementation failures can kill the very best ideas and policies.
3. In Los Angeles, low-income communities of color are disproportionately burdened by the impacts of streets designed primarily for cars, without receiving proportional funding for their mobility modes like walking, biking, and quality mass transit. Would you support legislation to add a ‘complete streets’ policy to SB 1, California’s newly augmented gas tax, to direct revenues to projects and programs that benefit pedestrians, bicyclists and transit-dependent communities?
I would. However, to fully answer a question like this one has to assess what else is not being funded and how important that is. But it is a mistake to just build more highways, induce more demand, not improve commute times anyhow, and still fail to support underserved communities as your question mentions.
4. In 2017, Assembly Members Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) and Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) introduced AB1103, a bill to enact an “Idaho Stop” adjustment to traffic code that allows cyclists to safely yield right of way at stop signs. This bill would help to reduce subjective traffic stops by law enforcement for a practice that is common by people on bikes and was endorsed by the L.A. Times Editorial Board. Will you commit to support an “Idaho Stop” bill that allows people on bikes to safely yield at stop signs as it comes up in the 2018 legislative session?
I would.
5. Would you support expanding state funding for bike share, and providing incentives for low-income individuals to afford high quality, family-friendly bikes that empower more economical mobility such as electric bikes and cargo bikes?
I would. I myself have benefited from public subsidies for my plug-in hybrid car (a 2012 Chevy Volt) and for solar panels and a Level 2 charger at my home. Although in so doing government has encouraged me as an early adopter of these important technologies, it does seem wrong that essentially these subsidies go to higher income individuals. So I like both the goal of this program idea to encourage bike use (and special types) and that it is targeted to lower income individuals. I also like bike share, which is a great example of innovative cooperative economics, as we discussed.

New Post has been published on http://www.buildercar.com/first-drive-2017-volkswagen-e-golf/
First Drive: 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf
MALIBU, California — Siblings are funny things. They share DNA and similar upbringings, but kids raised in the same household are typically distinct. Take the siblings of the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf family. They’re all born of VW’s brilliant MQB architecture and seem nearly identical at first glance, but look closer and they’re as different as spinach and ice cream.
The Golf R and GTI are the studs of their varsity squads, the rulers of the high school hallway. The base model Golf is the kid who’s liked by everyone who once took Mary Jane next door to a kegger and got to second base. Then there’s the 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf, the freshman nerd that’s captain of the Model United Nations club and designated Dungeon Master of all Dungeons & Dragons tournaments. The funny thing about nerds, though, is that they tend to grow out of their awkward stage. After all, who would you rather be — the Al Bundy-esque captain of the high school football team reliving the faded glory days or Elon Musk?
For 2018, the e-Golf’s picks up additional power and range. The latter is now EPA-rated at 125 miles (up from 83 miles for the 2016 model), granting the e-Golf a 119-mpge city/highway rating. With this upgrade, the e-Golf’s range now bests that of two of its closest competitors, the 114-mile BMW i3 (118 mpge) and 107-mile Nissan Leaf (112 mpge). Interestingly, while the Volkswagen offers just a little more than half of the Chevy Bolt EV’s 238-mile range, the two receive the same 119-mpge rating.
Its impressive increase primarily comes courtesy of it’s lithium-ion battery pack, which has been increased in capacity from 24.2 kWh to 35.8 and now features improved chemistry. Horsepower and torque increase thanks to a 100-kW motor in place of the 2016 model’s 85-kW one, which sends 134 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels — an increase of 19 hp and 15 lb-ft
A 7.2-kW on-board charger now comes standard on all e-Golfs, which enables the battery to be fully charged in less than six hours at a 240-volt charging station. DC Fast Charge functionality is optional on the base SE trim and standard on both Limited Edition and SEL Premium trim levels; it can charge the battery to 80 percent within an hour. e-Golf owners have access to the ChargePoint network of public EV charging stations (the largest in the world), which boasts more than 34,000 ports across North America.
To see if the new bennies help make the e-Golf feel more like its big bros or not out on the open road, We set out on a leisurely drive from Los Angeles up the coast to Malibu. As expected, the e-Golf is solid for cruising through the city. It’s comfortable, easily maneuverable, and has the family’s good looks.
Out of the gate, the increased power is noticeable. It’s not launching like a Tesla Model S P100D, but it’s got nice acceleration thanks to all that instant torque. Then we hit 35 or 40 mph and, well, the asthma started kicking in. Its 0-to-60 mph time of 9.6 seconds is best described as leisurely. There are no fireworks here, but fireworks aren’t junior’s thing. Top speed is limited to 85 mph, so there’s not a lot of excitement happening on open straightaways. With the e-Golf being the responsible, straight-laced type, it suits.
If you want to make your e-Golf go even slower (and get more efficient), it has three modes that progressively dial back power in order to preserve energy: Normal, Eco, and Eco+. For example, power and top speed are limited to 74 hp, 129 lb-ft, and 56 mph in Eco+. There are also three different levels of regenerative braking (D1, D2, and D3/B) to choose from.
To get a better sense of how the e-Golf handles, we diverged from VW’s meticulously planned route and shot off into the tasty canyon roads above Malibu. It didn’t take many swooshing curves and tight bends to make the connection to the GTI and Golf R. The e-Golf’s instant torque partially made up for the battery’s extra battery heft, providing a bit of snap when exiting corners. Steering felt about as nimble and responsive as that of any other Golf we’ve driven, its anti-roll-bar-equipped strut-type front and multilink rear suspension doing its best to keep body roll to a minimum.
The e-Golf also comes with VW’s XDS Cross Differential System — one of those kick-ass hand-me-downs from its varsity Golf siblings. XDS is sort of an electronic substitute for a mechanical limited-slip differential that measures data from each wheel sensor; if it feels less pressure on one wheel than the other, the system applies braking to the driven inside wheel to reduce understeer. The result? Increased stability, pluckier handling, and improved cornering performance. Overall, our back road experience was decidedly Golf-y — that is, peppy and fun.
Aside from the mechanical goodies, the 2017 e-Golf is the first in the family to get a couple of new cosmetic upgrades that will be coming to the rest of its Golf bros for model year 2018. Restyled bumpers, grille, and front fenders, new color options, headlights, and revised interior trim, to name a few. Additionally, an 8-inch infotainment display replaces the 6.5-inch unit and Volkswagen’s Car-Net App Connect becomes standard.
The 2017 e-Golf will maintain the model’s signature C-shaped LED daytime running lights and can be had with optional LED headlights, which come standard on the SEL Premium trim. To make the kid feel like the rest of the gang, Volkswagen’s given the e-Golf a rear chrome trapezoidal “detail” element, which in you-and-me talk is a phony exhaust. This is about as purposeful in life as the dog-face Snapchat filter, but I don’t know anyone who hasn’t faked something on social media to make their life look more “normal,” so it’s hard to blame Volkswagen. Its goal was to create an EV that didn’t look like a spaceship or something out of the future, so we get the rationale.
For now, availability of the e-Golf will continue to be limited to just 10 coastal states, but Volkswagen is looking at the remaining 40 for future sales. For those who don’t feel comfortable driving an EV because they’re too “progressive,” remember, VW put that fake exhaust on there just for you so your neighbors will never know.
While we can’t tell you exactly how much of your allowance you’ll have to fork over to get your hands on a 2017 e-Golf because pricing isn’t available yet, expect it to run somewhere between $31,000 and $36,000, depending on trim level and before any tax incentives (the 2016 e-Golf starts at $29,815). That’s a fairly considerable premium over a base Golf, which can be had for a little over $20,000 (college is expensive these days), but the e-Golf’s EPA- estimated annual “fuel” cost of only $550 will leave enough in your pocket to occasionally splurge at the local comic book store.
With a total of eight All-Stars awards between them, Volkswagen GTI and Golf R have are clearly the star athletes of the family — at least for now. If the 2017 e-Golf is any indication, however, the Golf family’s parents will soon need to clear some space on the shelf as the nerdy sibling will only continue to grow as it matures.
