First Drive: 2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke
BROOMFIELD, Colorado — Ford has been talking about a diesel-powered F-150 for years, but we never thought we’d live to see it, especially not after Dieselgate. And yet here we are, reviewing the first-ever F-150 with a compression-ignition engine. If the devil is on your Christmas list, you might want to send him an ice scraper and a warm coat.
We got a chance to sample Ford’s new 2018 F-150 Power Stroke diesel on the high, hilly roads outside of Denver. Ford is touting the 3.0-liter V-6’s fuel economy—the truck has a 30 mpg highway rating from the EPA—this no doubt being the engine’s raison d’être. But they also wanted to remind us that Ford’s commitment to work is still intact, and the press preview included towing and hauling opportunities, of which we eagerly took advantage.
Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the engine, let’s talk about the way it drives. The output numbers—250 horsepower @ 3,250 rpm and 440 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750 rpm—tell most of the story: The engine feels a bit sluggish off the line, but once the turbo starts producing boost, acceleration is strong and steady, if not exactly smooth. Under heavy power demands, Ford’s 10-speed automatic delivers a steady stream of upshifts to keep the F-150 Power Stroke’s engine speed shuttling between 2,500 and 3,500 rpm. (In fact, the tranny won’t let the engine rev any higher. If you have an urge to visit the 4,500-rpm rev limiter, you’ll have to engage manual-shifting mode.)
Under gentle throttle, engine speed stays lower and the shifts are less noticeable. When cruising, the transmission’s 10th gear drops engine speed well below 1,500 rpm. Feed in a little accelerator and the F-150 picks up speed without the need to downshift, a pretty neat party trick and no doubt a contributor to the engine’s remarkable highway fuel economy. On a side trip into and around Denver, a pleasant mix of freeway, city, and suburban driving, observed fuel economy exactly matched the F-150 diesel’s EPA combined figure of 25 mpg.
The 3.0-liter turbodiesel was originally developed by Ford for Jaguar Land Rover—more on that shortly—and its luxury-oriented tuning quickly becomes evident. It is very refined for a diesel, idling quietly, revving smoothly, and rarely raising its voice above a quiet murmur. The engine’s auto-start/stop feature even shuts down and restarts with little vibration, which is no easy feat for a diesel. After turning on the seat massager (yep, you can get one in the top-of-the-line F-150 Platinum), we found that even under power, the engine doesn’t make much more noise than the compressor that fills the seat’s air bladders.
Not that the little Power Stroke is afraid to get its hands dirty. Maximum towing capacity is 11,400 pounds, comparable to the F-150’s 5.0-liter V-8 and just 1,800 pounds shy of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost gas V-6. However, payload capacity—2,020 pounds in fleet models and 1,940 pounds in retail trucks—falls short of all other engine variants except the F-150’s base V-6. (In Fordland, towing and payload vary greatly depending on how the truck is configured, so potential buyers should be sure to peruse their towing guide carefully.)
We test drove an F-150 Power Stroke with a 6,500-pound boat and trailer on the bumper. The little diesel definitely showed the strain, but it accelerated confidently and had no problem keeping up highway speeds in the hills. Engine braking, not normally a diesel strong suit, was surprisingly good; the truck doesn’t offer factory exhaust brake, but the 3.0-liter diesel’s variable-nozzle turbo can create sufficient backpressure to serve the same purpose, and it did a nice job keeping speed in check on downgrades.
As for the origin story of the Power Stroke engine, you may have heard that Ford is using a version of Land Rover’s diesel, but in fact it’s the other way around. The engine comes from a family of diesels that Ford’s Dagenham, UK Diesel Centre developed for Jaguar, Land Rover, Peugeot and Citroen. (The former two were owned by Ford at the time; the latter were part of a joint-venture deal.) All four marques use the engines to this day, though the F-150 is only the second Ford-branded product in which the engine has appeared, the first being the Australian-market Territory SUV.
The F-150’s engine is, therefore, a close relative of the TD6 found in Land Rovers like our Four Seasons Discovery. The two engines share a compacted-graphite iron block, but packaging requirements required wholesale changes for the Power Stroke version, including a new variable-geometry turbo, EGR system, and oil sump. The crankshaft, pistons, and rods have been beefed up for truck use, accessories like the alternator and A/C have been repositioned to fit the existing F-150’s layout, and the fuel injection system has been modified. Its output is similar to that of the JLR version, though peak horsepower comes a bit lower in the rev range while peak torque is a bit higher. Ford has fitted the F-150 with a 5.4-gallon diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, which it says is good for 10,000 miles. In our experience, DEF consumption increases with heavy hauling and towing, so the big tank is a clear advantage.
Pricing for the diesel engine depends on what trim level you buy. For entry-level XL and XLT models, the engine is a $4,995 option; for Lariat trucks, which come with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 as standard, the price premium is $4,000; and for King Ranch and Platinum models, which come with the 5.0-liter V-8, the diesel costs $3,000.
The new diesel isn’t the only addition to the F-150 lineup. Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram are launching new half-ton pickups this year and Ford is eager to ruin their picnic, so the F-150 also gets new Super-Duty-esque front styling, interior updates for all but the low-end XL and XLT models, and new options including full-stop adaptive cruise control and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The entry-level 3.5-liter V-6 has been replaced in favor of a 3.3-liter six with a bit more horsepower and a bit less torque, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 get internal upgrades, and all engines now feature an auto stop/start function.
Still, the Power Stroke diesel is the real standout. General Motors announced a new 3.0-liter straight-six diesel for its 2019 half-ton trucks, but its introduction is still some months away. Ram ceased production of its EcoDiesel V-6 in 2016 under a cloud (heh) of suspicion about its emissions software. A new version is in the works for the Ram 1500 (as well as a planned software fix for older EcoDiesels), but it won’t get here until calendar year 2019. That leaves Ford, for a short time at least, as the only half-ton pickup with a diesel engine—and a good one at that. Word to the wise: If you plan a trip to hell, bring hand warmers.

My Chevy Find New Roads Experience #FindNewRoads
I had one of the most THRILLING moments of my life with the Chevy team at the Chevy Find New Roads Experience!

I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for this event. I have been to “Drive” events before that generally consist of a nice 5 minute ride around the building and a 2 minute spiel on the highlights of the vehicle. This is experience was not that. The folks at Chevy provided a select group of Atlanta media way more. This was a 6 hour event that started in the wee hours of the morning. As we entered the parking lot of the Atlanta Motor Speedway we were greeted by a Chevy Representative who directed us to the main building. Once we were checked in we were treated to a buffet style breakfast. When breakfast was over we were loaded onto a charter bus and driven to a showroom on the raceway that housed a host of brand new Chevy vehicles. At that showroom we watched a short presentation that informed us about Chevy Find New Roads and the direction that Chevrolet wants to go in giving it’s customers and it’s staff excellent driving experiences.

After the presentation was over we went to the track to drive! Short courses and stations were set up so that we could get the full experience of each vehicle. We were able to ride in and/or drive 6 vehicles in all. Each experience was different and highlighted the benefits of each vehicle.
Chevrolet Bolt EV
This all electric vehicle packs a punch! We were each given a chance to drive the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV on a small course that was full of twists and turns. They wanted us to get a feel for how this vehicle handles and also the power that it has. Even though its all electric the acceleration was great. It has something called One-Pedal driving. It has a paddle on the steering wheel that lets you brake and even stop. The shift only has Neutral Reverse and Drive.
The all digital dashboard keeps the driver well informed.
Silverado HD
This 3/4 ton vehicle has maximum towing capacity. To demonstrate this we actually towed vehicles around the track. I got to ride with Professional Driver, Dave, who made sure that all safety points were met during our drive. Check out his thoughts on my first time towing something!

Colorado ZR2
The Colorado is excellent for off roading. The course for this demonstration was full of bumps and dips. All designed to show us how easily this truck handles rough terrain. We had to get suited up for this drive complete with a harness and helmet.
It also has Multimatic™ shocks and front and rear electronic locking differentials that allow it to drive almost vertically! The simulated mountain drive was terrifying as you will see later in my video!
Camaro zL1
The purpose of this test drive was simple. To show the power of this vehicle. We got to burn some rubber for this one. Again we were suited up for safety and paired with a Professional Driver. He took us from zero to 75 in seconds. The sheer force from that kind of acceleration made it impossible for me to film it. But i did film other people while they took their ride.

All New 2018 Equinox
I am very familiar with this vehicle because my mom drives the 2015 version. There were many very cool upgrades. It has a smaller body and more powerful engine for starters. You could tell the difference when accelerating. I loved the full sun roof that opens all the way to the back. These interior colors really stood out.
I love this vehicle in terms of comfort and luxury. It’s a cross over that’s worth taking a look at.
I got to meet Smiling Mark McKay from WSB-TV Morning Traffic Report! He says he’s no celebrity. I beg to differ!
Corvette Grand Sport
The very last test drive was in the Brand New Chevy Corvette Grand Sport. Of course they want to show us the speed and handling of this vehicle. To do this they harnessed and helmeted us up again and handed us the keys. Say what? Yes I said it. They gave us the keys and set us free on the Atlanta Motor Speedway! As we listened to the Professional Driver instruct us via radio we trailed each other at speeds of up to 130 mph around the Speedway! We took several laps before they guided us back in. It was indeed one of the most exhilirating experiences of my life and I will never forget it.

The 2017 North American International Auto Show: An Odyssey Worth Traversing
When the 2017 Pacifica was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last year, Chrysler restarted its minivan team’s engine and started down the road toward family-moving domination. The advanced dual-monitor rear-seat entertainment system. The built-in Ridgid vacuum cleaner. The hybrid drivetrain. With the Dodge Caravan crumbling, the Pacifica managed to surge past the competition, and this morning was awarded the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.
But the auto industry is anything but static, and when one automaker surges forward, you can be sure its peers are close behind. It’s this dynamic that ensures every auto show includes a little bit of excitement; the next best thing is always lurking beneath a nondescript sheet.
This year, the Honda Odyssey was one of those great surprises. We expected Honda to deliver a compelling rebuttal to the Pacifica, and outside of a pure electric or hybrid powertrain, it did just that. The 2018 Odyssey features a 32-horsepower bump from its 3.5-liter V6, resulting in 280—just 7 shy of Chrysler’s Pacifica. More impressive, however, is Honda’s innovative second row. Called Magic Slide, owners will be able to easily reconfigure the middle chairs by pulling a lever and pushing or pulling the seats into the desired position. This means no more squeezing and contorting behind a tilted chair just to pack into the back seat. Just pull a lever, push the seat to the middle position, and walk right in. Once your kids have settled into the third row, you’ll be able to use Honda’s CabinWatch and CabinTalk features to keep an eye on things, and pipe your reprimands through the rear speakers, or your kids’ headphones. In case you ever felt you needed a little more “Big Brother” presence on the school run, Honda just gave it to you.
Opening its conference by thanking jurors and the team behind its Bolt for the 2017 North American Car of the Year award the electric vehicle received that morning, Chevrolet debuted its 2018 Traverse. Much more squared off and tougher looking than the previous version, particularly in the rear, the new Traverse also offers lots more room inside, with seating for 8 adults, best-in-class second-row legroom, and more interior passenger space than the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan Pathfinder. The new Traverse will offer an around-view monitor system, hands-free liftgate, 4G Wi-Fi capability, 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, and a Traction Mode Select feature, and it will get a new standard 3.6-liter V6 with a 9-speed automatic offering 305 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.
