August 2017 Auto Sales: SUV, Truck Sales Keep Automakers Afloat
It’s been a tough year for a lot of automakers. Sales have generally been down, and only a few brands have been able to post significant gains. But while July was especially rough, August actually looked pretty good for a few brands. Maybe the sky isn’t falling. For now. Ford (209,897 units, -2.1 percent) Winner: F-Series (77,007 units, +15.0 percent) What can we say? Americans love trucks, and they definitely love the F-Series. Unless gas prices skyrocket sometime soon, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to see Ford trucks continue to sell well. Loser: Lincoln MKZ (2,160 units, -21.6 percent) MKZ sales are only down a little more than 7 percent for the year, but in August, they dropped more than 20 percent. That’s slightly worse than it did last month when sales dropped 19.2 percent. It might still outsell the Continental, but in another year, who knows? GM (275,552 units, +7.5 percent) Winner: Chevrolet Equinox (28,245 units, +84.9 percent) The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox impressed us when we first drove it, and it looks like CUV buyers have been similarly impressed because they’re buying the heck out of it. Chevrolet will have to sell a lot more Equinoxes if it wants to take down the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V, but those sales figures are still impressive. Loser: Cadillac ATS (1,012 units, -59.1 percent) The ATS is a good car. It really is. But apparently, most of the people who might actually buy an ATS have already bought one. Sales dropped drastically last month, continuing an overall sales slide for the year. Fiat Chrysler (176,033 units, -11 percent) Winner: Jeep Grand Cherokee (23,572 units, +28 percent) Overall, the Jeep brand was down for the month, but the one truly bright spot on the sales sheet was the Grand Cherokee. Its sales jumped significantly, helping offset the losses from the now-canceled Patriot. Without the Grand Cherokee, Jeep’s August would have looked much worse. Loser: Jeep Cherokee (11,874 units, -50 percent) While the Grand Cherokee’s sales were up, the less-grand Cherokee’s sales were down. Way down. Not quite all the way down but not far off. Jeep literally sold half as many Cherokees in August 2017 as it did in August 2016. It still managed to outsell the Patriot, though, so that’s something to be proud of. Toyota (227,625 units, +6.8 percent) Winner: Toyota RAV4 (43,265 units, +30.4 percent) Americans love their Ford trucks, but they also love their compact crossovers. And boy, do compact crossover buyers love the new RAV4. It outsold the Camry, for Pete’s sake. All hail the RAV4, the new king of crossover sales. Loser: Lexus CT (204 units, -75.1 percent) The Lexus CT200h might not be a particularly sporty hatch, but it’s definitely got some sporty styling. And even if you’re not a fan of the design, you have to admit it’s way better looking than the current Prius. But apparently, the market for hybrid luxury hatchbacks is drying up. CT sales were down more than 75 percent last month. Honda (146,015 units, -2.4 percent) Winner: Honda HR-V (9,603 units, +26.7 percent) Sales of the Honda Fit were down last month, but the lifted Fit that Honda calls the HR-V did wonderfully. It won’t outsell the CR-V (30,960 units) or the Civic (36,482 units) anytime soon, but the subcompact CUV improved its sales by more than 25 percent in August. Loser: Acura TLX (2,410, -33.0 percent) The TLX offers a lot of value for your money, but it seems that luxury sedan buyers weren’t all that interested in it last month. Or maybe they weren’t interested in the TLX’s new nose. Sales dropped by a third despite a recent refresh. Nissan (108,326 units, -13.1 percent) Winner: Nissan Armada (4,454 units, +766.5 percent) The old Nissan Armada was fine, but the new Armada is much better. Buyers have apparently reacted accordingly because Armada sales are way, way up. Even if you moved the decimal point, a 76.65-percent increase would be huge. 766.5 percent? That’s ridiculous. Loser: Nissan Frontier (4,637 units, -51.4 percent) When we last saw a redesigned Nissan Frontier, George Bush was president, and Ronald Reagan was still alive. So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that sales are down 18.9 percent for the year. But what is surprising is that August sales managed to fall more than 50 percent. Volkswagen Brand (32,015 units, +9.0 percent) Winner: Golf SportWagen (1,991 units, +88.4 percent) With fewer than 2,000 units sold, the Golf SportWagen won’t be outselling the Toyota RAV4 anytime soon, but when we had our long-term SportWagen, it proved to be a fantastic alternative to compact crossovers. Seeing that its sales nearly doubled compared to last August is great news for wagon fans. Loser: Beetle Coupe (667 units, -40.3 percent) Funny enough, despite the fact that the Beetle Coupe’s sales were down significantly this month, Beetle Convertible sales were up nearly as much. It seems that anyone who still wants a Beetle would rather have the convertible than the hardtop. In a way, that actually makes sense. Con el tiempo, llegaron soluciones como Android Auto o Apple CarPlay, con el objetivo de integrar nuestros móviles dentro del propio vehículo, con interfaces personalizadas que nos permiten controlar varios de sus apartados.
En concreto, Android Auto se encuentra disponible para más de 400 modelos de coches, por lo que procede comentar cuáles son dichos modelos compatibles, así como todo lo que conviene saber sobre Android Auto.
Qué es Android Auto
Android Auto es la solución de Google para integrar nuestro dispositivo Android con nuestro vehículo compatible. Lleva funcionando desde el año 2014, y cuenta con una interfaz bastante simple e intuitiva, que se combina con acciones de voz que minimizan el contacto físico del conductor con el propio panel del vehículo.
Esta solución nos proporciona información sobre las notificaciones que recibimos, permite utilizar Google Maps, reproducir nuestra música, y responder mensajes mediante nuestra voz. El principal objetivo es el de poder interactuar con nuestro teléfono sin necesidad de tocarlo, minimizando las distracciones al volante.
Android Auto puede utilizarse desde el propio teléfono mediante su aplicación, aunque para sacarle el máximo partido es recomendable conectarlo al vehículo
Para utilizar Android Auto es necesario un vehículo o dispositivo compatible (Alpine, Pioneer o Sony tienen radios compatibles), así como disponer de un dispositivo Android con la versión 5.0 Lollipop y superiores. Teniendo dicha compatibilidad en el vehículo, tan solo hace falta descargar la aplicación de Android Auto y empezar a utilizarlo.
A la hora de realizar la conexión, podemos hacerlo de forma inalámbrica o mediante un cable USB que conecte tu móvil al coche. Android Auto funciona tanto en la interfaz de nuestro móvil, así como adaptándose al panel de nuestro coche.

AMG’s Mind-Blowing 603-hp Family Haulers That Are Also Incredibly Practical
Seriously, this is a “1 percenter” conundrum, but it’s a fun automotive/escapist exercise, nonetheless. Let’s imagine you have a family of five to seven, perhaps a doggo, and occasionally visit a local nursery, home-improvement store, or big-box outlet. Oh,, and you have the financial means to consider a $100,000-plus, fire-breathing, AMG-built wagon or SUV. Which path more-rapidly traveled should you take?
2020 Mercedes-AMG E 63 4Matic+: A Rare Breed.
On one side of the garage, we have an ultra-wagon—the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ station wagon. It’s the ‘have your cake and eat it, too’solution to “I want an all-wheel-drive AMG super sedan, but also I want more than double the cargo capacity.” Because Cadillac pulled the plug on the CTS-V wagon in 2014, Dodge stopped building the Magnum SRT way back in 2008, and BMW built a very limited run of rare M5 wagons (none of which were available to U.S. customers), only a handful other automakers currently stand with AMG and offer performance wagons: Audi, Jaguar, Porsche, and Volvo. (Until we can arrange for that dream comparison, here’s our initial take on Audi RS 6 Avant against an E 63S wagon. Meanwhile, back to the AMG intramurals.)
Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4Matic+ SUV: The Unicorn You Didn’t Know You Wanted
On the other side of the garage, we have the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4Matic+ SUV, the largest sport utility Mercedes-Benz builds, that’s also been massaged by the AMG division. No other automaker offers a luxury high-performance 3-row SUV, not Audi, Bentley, BMW, Lamborghini, Porsche, or Rolls Royce. It is literally in a class of one. The GLS 63 SUV a (very fast) rolling seven-seat contradiction that defies logic. How can something so large, with a weight approaching 6,000 pounds, feel so lithe and capable on a twisting road and yet remain an everyday-livable sport utility?
Performance
Pro: The GLS 63 SUV is Seriously Quick Con: The E 63 Wagon is Quicker Still
Both the E 63 and GLS 63 are powered by the ubiquitous AMG twin-turbo 4.0L V-8 making 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. With so many automakers offering 600-plus horsepower motors today, we’ll update the old refrain and now say, “600 is the new 500.” They’re both fitted with a rapid-fire AMG-tuned nine-speed automatic, but where the two differ is that the GLS’s engine is a mild hybrid with a 48-volt electrical system and an “EQ Boost starter/generator” that seamlessly fires up the engine and adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft into the mi—-not additively, by the way. The added electric-motor torque-fill, indeed, effectively eliminates most of the turbo lag you might feel at part-throttle, but that’s where the performance gains end. If you’re at full throttle, the added torque lies waiting in the background.
To Nobody’s Surprise
We’ve tested a 2018 E 63 wagon, and it ran to 60 mph in just 3 seconds flat. Imagine that: one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three: SIXTY! In a wagon. There are roughly 50 cars MotorTrend has ever tested, mostly supercars, that have managed to get under the 3-second mark. That this approximately 4,700-pound wagon gets this close is truly a remarkable feat. Even without considering its drift mode— ensuring it’s completely rear-wheel drive— the E 63 wagon is truly an overperformer.
We’ve yet to measure the GLS 63’s acceleration, but combing through our data and previous tests of the current generation GLS (450 and 580) and tests of the last-gen 5.5-liter 577-hp/561–lb-ft GLS 63, we’re confident to report this one would easily be under 4 seconds to 60 mph; somewhere in the range of 3.8 seconds. Again, a truly stellar performance, but several tenths shy of the wagon.
Ride and Handling
Pro: Both Benefit from Air Springs and Adaptive Dampers Con: There’s No Arguing with Physics
Air springs do a wonderful job smoothing out the ride, but you need other, smarter, faster systems to aid handling. In the GLS 63, its 48-volt electrical system fires electro-mechanical actuators to effectively negate body roll, and it truly works. What should feel like a runaway Conestoga with steam-roller sized 23-inch mono-block forged wheels, ends up feeling like a very fine handling wagon. What’s more is that the ride is very calm and controlled.
And the wagon, lighter by 1,300 pounds? Well, it feels like top-tier sport sedan; so confident and capable, one simply forgets they’re driving what is otherwise a smooth-riding wagon. That thought simply vanishes as the roads grow more challenging.
People Space
Pro: The E 63 Wagon is Spacious Con: The GLS 63 is Cavernous
OK duh, so the heavier SUV isn’t as quick or agile as the wagon, but what about space? You wouldn’t be considering either of these if all you needed was a fast AMG-branded car, right? Then it’s about people space and cargo space.
With a 7.7-inch longer wheelbase, you anticipate the GLS would easily trounce the E wagon for passenger comfort. You’d be mostly right, but then you realize those inches need to be chopped into three rows of seating rather than two. (Note: The current non-AMG versions of the E-Class wagon come with standard rear-facing third-row jump seats, bringing the seat count to seven—same as the GLS. This will remain true in 2021 when the only other E-Class wagon will be the soft-road-ready All-Terrain, set to do battle against the Audi A6 Allroad and the Volvo V90 Cross Country.)
Back to people space: The GLS SUV’s much taller roofline affords an obvious headroom advantage in every seat. Mind you, hoisting yourself into the tall GLS is a bit more of a chore. Then it might surprise you that the driver and front passenger in the E-wagon are afforded about an inch more legroom. The second-row legroom comparison isn’t even close. The GLS offers six more luxurious inches in which to stretch out. Naturally, there’s an available Executive Rear Seat package available. The difference in shoulder room between these two isn’t as great, and three-across in either second row isn’t out of the question.
Cargo Space
Pro: The E63 Wagon Can Haul a Boatload of Stuff Con: Did We Mention the GLS is Cavernous
Although the trunk volume of the E 63 sedan is generous at 13.1 cubic feet, the wagon offers 35 cubes with all seats occupied and 64 cubes with the second row folded. That’s on par with popular SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Impressive, right? With the second row folded, the length of the floor is impressive. If it were ever needed, a 6-foot-plus tall person could sleep in the back,say for an overnighter at the 24 Hours of Sebring. The cargo lift-over height is a very reasonable 22.4 inches, and the wagon can safely carry as much as 1,300 pounds. It cannot be equipped for towing in the states, but seriously, who needs an SUV?
However, the GLS is a cargo ship by comparison. With all seats folded, it can hold 20 cu-ft more cargo, something like a large ottoman, and nearly accommodate a 4-by-88-foot sheet of plywood. Lifting cargo over the GLS’s 33-inch high transom might be a tall order, but it can carry nearly 1,700 pounds. Considering the significant power of the engine, it’s a bit surprising the GLS 63 is rated to tow a modest 4,300 pounds. No doubt, if you need to move a lot of stuff or people rapidly, the seven-passenger GLS 63 is the one for you.
Off-Roading
Pro: The GLS 63 Can Genuinely Go Off Roading Con: The E 63 Should Never Go Off Road
Both the E 63 wagon and GLS 63 SUV have air springs; however, the GLS’s can raise orlower the SUV at will. While the wagon is fixed at 5.0 inches of ground clearance with bumper-scuffing 12.7 and 15.0 degrees of approach and departure angles, the SUV’s clearance can vary between 7.9 and 8.5 inches, and when raised to its highest level, it can afford a respectable 23.0/21.0-degree approach/departure angles. It would be like a Bigfoot sighting if you came across a GLS 63 in the wild, but it can go off-roading.
User Interface
Pro: The E 63 Wagon’s “MBUX” is Hard to Navigate Con: The GLS 63’s is Worse
Both vehicles come with a graphics-intensive low-button-count version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience. There are two 12.3-inch multi-configurable color displays with abundant, unintuitive menus. Where the (older) E 63 wagon uses a combo pad/push-knob to navigate what must total 100 different screens buried in menu after menu, the newer GLS 63 is controlled by a trackpad/touchpad alone.
Just as we criticize Lexus for its similarly frustrating interface, we do here in the GLS as well. Besides being variously precise, monitoring where the cursor is and hitting your mark requires far too much of a driver’s valuable attention. We get it, fewer moving parts that could break, taking every last ounce out of a vehicle to save weight, but at some point, the actual user experience should matter more. True story: Family friends who have purchased a new Mercedes-Benz every two years for the past 2 let their new GLE sit in the garage and instead drive their spare 2015 Ford Explorer because the GLE’s infotainment system “scares” them. Do better, Mercedes-Benz.
Safety
Pro: Both Have an Extensive Suite of Advanced Safety Systems Con: Sometimes They’re Intrusive and Difficult to Disable
Besides 10 airbags, a driver attention monitor, and laser-sharp LED headlamps with auto high-beams, the E63 wagon is equipped with standard blind-spot monitoring, a system that Mercedes calls “Pre Safe,” which is activated when an imminent front or rear collision is predicted, and pedestrian/collision-avoidance auto braking. For instance, if stationary and the wagon senses an imminent rear collision, it will apply full brake pressure to avoid being pushed into an intersection or another car, raise the front seats to a more upright position, pretension the seat belts, and issue a particular frequency of sound from the audio system that causes an ear reflex to protect from loud noises. It also has parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system.
The GLS 63 has all the above and yet three fewer airbags (no rear-side or front passenger knee) but adds curve-following LED headlamps, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise. Not bad, but considering so many new cars priced tens of thousands of dollars lower offer an even broader, standard safety suite, this feels a little skimpy for $100,000-plus vehicles.
The E 63 has an additional Driver Assistance package that goes a couple steps beyond the GLS’s standard equipment. This $2,250 option includes adaptive cruise control with active curve-sensitive and speed limit adjustment, lane keeping and lane change assist, auto braking for pedestrian/collision avoidance and rear cross traffic, evasive steering assist including blind-spot assist, and something Mercedes calls Impulse Side protection, which when a side impact is imminent, will nudge a front occupant toward the center of the car in their seat.
That’s a lot to digest,and it’s a lot to control or defeat if it’s not functioning to your liking. For instance, when using the curve/speed limit-sensitive cruise control, the vehicle slows inexplicably—sometimes drastically—when entering a slower-speed zone (to the dismay of following drivers). If one simply presses the accelerator pedal in defiance too many times or for too long, the entire system shuts down. Gah! There may be a way to decouple the curve and speed limit tattle tales in a menu somewhere, but good luck finding that while driving.
We did appreciate the blind-spot systems: good clear warnings and a slight nudge on the wheel. The rear cross-traffic auto braking may save the day a time or two. The forward-looking automated braking was properly (not too conservatively) calibrated for L.A.’s unpredictable and congested traffic. It never inadvertently sent a brief case into the passenger foot well.
In Summary
Pro: Unfathomably Capable, Comfortable, and Posh Con: You Can Choose Only One
There’s no question that if you have more than $100,000 to spend on family/cargo transport, you’re going to be happy with either the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S wagon or GLS 63 4Matic+. Heck, you could probably afford both and be done with it.
In terms of acceleration to 60 mph, with the advantage of all-wheel-drive, either would give a 760-hp Mustang Shelby GT500 a run for its money. That’s simply world-class quickness. They both offer opulent interiors that can comfortably accommodate five to seven people and/or more cargo than you’ll probably ever need them to. Shockingly, neither one is so egregiously thirsty that they earn a gas-guzzler tax.
The GLS 63 is an unapologetically grandiose luxury liner with previously incomprehensible performance. Looking at the nearly 6-foot-tall, 3-row SUV, you’d never suspect such explosive acceleration, cornering ability, or posh ride on those massive mono-block wheels – or that it could (and not that anybody would) safely traverse a moderately challenging trail. Do you want it all with zero compromise? Then there’s nothing like it from any other automaker today. Go claim your unicorn right now.
That said, we in the in the automotive press have always been drawn to stealthy, sporty wagons not only for their incongruous performance-to-image qualities, but also because they’re almost always more attractive than their sedan siblings; the lines are longer, sleeker, and just sexier. Yes, we just said wagons are sexier than sedans. Look at Audi, BMW, Dodge (when they offered one), Jaguar, Mercedes, Porsche, or Volvo. Fight us. And for now, the E 63S wagon is the apex of the breed. It’s incredibly satisfying to drive, rides beautifully down the highway, and literally hauls more than cargo. It’s also easy to park, and doesn’t scream “Look at me!” For us, all these talents add up to one of the most desirable vehicles on the planet. It would be the one we’d choose and even more so, it would be the onewe’d probably be happy with for the rest of our motoring lives.

Ford announced earlier this year that it would cut all cars from its lineup except the Mustang, and GM recently made the call to discontinue six car models from its lineup. But not all the cuts come from that mass car exodus. Here’s a look at the models we lost in 2018.
Ford Fiesta
The subcompact segment continues to shrink, and with the loss of the Ford Fiesta, there are fewer affordable cars on the market. This also means we say goodbye to the fun little Fiesta ST, reducing the number of choices consumers have for an affordable sporty car.
Chevrolet Volt
The Chevrolet Volt proved you can have a futuristic car with minimal sacrifices and conventional looks, and we liked the first-generation plug-in hybrid enough to name it our 2011 MotorTrend Car of the Year. Alas, the second-generation Volt is one of the victims of General Motors’ shift toward crossovers and EVs. The all-electric Bolt hatchback will live on, but the range-extended Volt’s time has been cut short.
Ford Focus
Ford was originally planning to bring the next-generation Focus to North America in Focus Active guise, which is essentially a lifted hatchback. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case thanks to looming tariffs and low sales projections. We also won’t be getting the new Focus ST or RS that the rest of the world will enjoy.
BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon
We recently drove the 2019 BMW 3 Series and came back impressed by its improved driving dynamics and revised interior. Unfortunately for American consumers averse to the idea of owning a crossover, BMW won’t have any 3 Series alternatives for you because it’s not planning to bring back the wagon in the U.S. There’s also no word on whether the 3 Series Gran Turismo hatchback will return.
Ford Fusion
When the current-generation Ford Fusion first debuted, it wowed the world with its Aston Martin–esque front end and overall swoopy exterior design. Fast-forward to 2018, and the Fusion is now on borrowed time with production slated to end soon. In addition to gas-only powertrains, the Ford Fusion was also offered as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
Ford C-Max
Ford’s C-Max came in standard hybrid or plug-in hybrid guise and offered respectable fuel efficiency without the soul-sucking driving experience many associated with hybrids at the time of its release. Unfortunately, sales of the C-Max failed to reach the levels of key competitors like the Toyota Prius, which led to its eventual demise.
Chevrolet Impala
The Chevrolet Impala will go to car heaven after March due to General Motors choosing to pull funding from the plant that produces it. This storied nameplate received a major overhaul back in the 2014 model year and quickly became one of the better vehicles in its segment. Unfortunately, the decline in sedan sales, lack of meaningful updates, and rapid growth of the crossover segment have all contributed to the model’s discontinuation.
Buick LaCrosse
Another full-size sedan headed to the automotive afterlife is the Buick LaCrosse. Straddling the lines between mainstream and luxury, the LaCrosse was a tweener that had a muddled identity. It was too expensive to be a mass-market model, yet its build quality, as we noted in a recent First Test, lags behind premium models.
Cadillac XTS
If you wanted a full-size luxury sedan priced under $50,000, the Cadillac XTS was one of the few that fit the bill. Unfortunately, only a small number of them found homes even after Cadillac added a 410-hp V-Sport model. Like its cousins, the Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse, the Cadillac XTS will be discontinued in General Motors’ quest to trim costs.
Subaru Forester XT
The previous-generation Subaru Forester was the last to see a turbocharged model because the redesigned 2019 Forester ditched the XT variant. With XT models making up less than 10 percent of the mix, Subaru didn’t see the point of offering a more powerful turbocharged version of its popular crossover.
Ford Taurus
The Ford Taurus belongs to a segment that’s essentially on its death bed. With full-size sedans selling in such small numbers, the discontinuation of the Taurus has been a long time coming, especially considering it hasn’t received many updates since its 2013 refresh.
Cadillac ATS Sedan
At one point the Cadillac ATS was the standard-bearer among compact luxury sport sedans, offering sublime performance and handling and a sharp exterior design. Sales, however, failed to come close to those of its key rivals from Europe. Cadillac confirmed earlier this year that the ATS sedan will end production to make way for the next generation of Caddy sedans. Both the ATS and CTS are expected to eventually be replaced by a new CT5 sedan.
Volkswagen Beetle
Model-year 2019 will mark the end of an era as Volkswagen will officially end production of the iconic Beetle. In celebration of the Beetle’s last year in production, the German automaker released the Final Edition for those looking to get a piece of automotive nostalgia. The current Beetle will be no more after 2019, but VW hasn’t ruled out a successor—possibly an all-electric model based on its MEB platform.
Cadillac CT6
The Cadillac CT6 was the brand’s first rear-drive full-size luxury sedan since the Fleetwood was discontinued in 1996. Like the ATS, the CT6 was supposed to challenge European rivals, and although the big sedan did prove successful to some degree, its sales never really took off. Despite the introduction of a 550-hp CT6-V (originally a V-Sport model) for 2019, production will end in June of next year.
Chevrolet City Express
In a bid to take a chunk of the compact commercial vehicle segment, Chevrolet rebadged and restyled the Nissan NV200 commercial van and called it the City Express. But since its introduction, sales have lagged behind the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and even its Nissan-badged twin. General Motors made the call to discontinue the City Express this past summer.
Mercedes-AMG GT S
Back when it first arrived, the Mercedes-AMG GT S won MotorTrend’s Best Driver’s Car title, beating out many formidable sports cars. With the refresh of the AMG GT lineup, however, the GT S will be discontinued. In its place, Mercedes will offer the AMG GT C in coupe and convertible body styles, shrinking the lineup down by one model.

First Drive: 2019 Cadillac XT4
SEATTLE, Washington — We’ve been herded into a ballroom at the Four Seasons hotel in Seattle, where we’re listening to Cadillac reps explain the why behind their new ‘Y’ trim-level strategy, augmented by a fancy PowerPoint presentation. Listed on the left arm of the slide’s Y graphic are the Premium Luxury and Platinum trims, with Sport and V-Series on the right. At the base of the Y is the Luxury level. Y should you care? Because the 2019 Cadillac XT4, the marque’s all-new compact crossover we’ve come here to drive, represents the first implementation of Cadillac’s Y approach, that’s Y.
Cadillac says it’s aiming the XT4 at the entry-luxury, compact crossover set (think Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, etc.), though it feels at least a half-size bigger than any of those vehicles. The Cadillac team says it focused on providing more usable interior volume than the competitive set, and indeed, the XT4’s 39.5 inches of rear seat legroom beats all the players mentioned here, and its 22.5 cu-ft of cargo space with rear seats up, 48.9 with them down is better than most.
As for how it stacks up in the exterior looks department compared to the competition, we’d say pretty well, especially from the direct front or rear view. The 2019 XT4 sports a version of Cadillac’s new, thinner grille that first debuted on the CT6 sedan, with sleek and slim vertical headlights and similar taillights that echo one of the old CTS Wagon’s best styling traits. Let’s just say the profile isn’t its good side, with a generic appearance not unlike that of its General Motors stablemates. Standard wheels are 18 inches all trim levels, though each varies slightly in color.
That brings us back to the Y strategy. The base Luxury model checks in at $35,790 to start and features aluminum-color interior accents, leatherette seats, and satin aluminum exterior trim. For $40,290, buyers can veer either to the left or right side of the Y with the Sport or Premium Luxury trims. Choose the Sport path, and you get carbon-fiber interior and gloss black exterior trim, body color door handles, leatherette seats with sport accents, carbon-fiber or wood interior trim, a thicker steering wheel and unique pedals, and gloss black roof rails among other features. Premium Luxury takers get leather seats, wood or aluminum interior trim, satin aluminum exterior trim and roof rails, and nickel-finish door handles. Both upscale trims also receive front and rear park assist, lane change and side blind zone alerts, and rear cross traffic systems. A power liftgate, driver’s seat memory, and an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror are also part of the Premium Luxury package.
After reading all that you may be asking yourself, “Self, where are the V-Series and Platinum models at?” Not every Cadillac will get those treatments, but we suspect the XT4 will be at least going Platinum soon enough. All XT4s regardless of trim get Cadillac’s new 8.0-inch infotainment screen with the marque’s redesigned Cue system that does away with the frustrating haptic feedback switchgear in favor of a center-console mounted rotary knob controller. Located behind the gearshift lever, it’s further augmented by a volume knob and various quick key buttons. We had limited time to explore the setup in depth, but our cursory experience is that it’s an improvement over the outgoing Cue, mostly in terms of usability. We’re told this new rotary-knob system will find its way to other Cadillac models and is already being implemented on the CT6 sedan.
Under the hood of the XT4 is an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. While that’s down significantly from the old 2.0T’s 272 hp and 295 lb-ft, Cadillac says the engine is far more efficient thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger, cylinder deactivation, and the engine’s trick “Tripower” valvetrain system, which utilizes a shifting groove that effectively “slides” the cam lobe profile to one of three settings depending on driving condition. At the low end of the profile spectrum is the Active Fuel Management groove, which disables two cylinders and is designed for very light, freeway cruising; low valve lift is set up for balanced power and efficiency; and high valve lift engages when you need to put the hammer down in passing or hill climbing situations, for example. Additionally, the new engine’s peak torque comes on between 1,500-4,000 rpm compared to the outgoing engine’s 3,000-4,600 rpm, meaning in routine cruising conditions you’ll typically see the tach needle stay under 2,000 rpm, further optimizing fuel economy.
The XT4’s transmission is all-new too, a 9-speed automatic with a broader ratio than the outgoing 6-speed unit (7.6:1 vs 6.0:1) and a 4.69 first gear along with a 0.62 top gear to get that sub-2,000 rpm cruise speed. A twin-clutch all-wheel-drive setup is available on all XT4 models for an extra $2,500 and features a front disconnect to run in FWD at the push of the drive mode button. Other drive modes are AWD and Sport, both of which activate the all-wheel-drive system, while the latter also boosts steering effort and throttle response, allowing for higher shift points. Suspension is strut-type up front, and five-link a la XT5 in the rear. Sport models are available with an optional Active Sport Suspension.
We had a chance to wring out both Sport and Premium Luxury versions of the XT4 over a smorgasbord of Washington state highways and rural backroads, and we came away impressed. Both XT4 trims exhibited a sporty feel for a crossover thanks to a combination of precise steering and throttle inputs and good body control. Slowing things down are strong electro-hydraulic assist brakes that we’re told were benchmarked for feel against the ATS. This means the pedal is firm and not over-boosted like several other crossovers we’ve driven. It took a little getting used to initially, but ultimately rewarded us with excellent modulation.
The XT4’s 2.0T engine felt lively and eager to rev through the midrange, though it starts running out of breath above 5,000 rpm. That said, in normal driving, plenty of low-down torque and the 9-speed transmission conspire to keep revs low while not feeling like the XT4 is bogging in the slightest. This is possibly the best 9-speed we’ve experienced to date, with little gear hunting and silky smooth shifts that are almost imperceptible at times. That said, the XT4 is no rocket—258 lb-ft of torque only goes so far when there’s nearly 4,000 lbs of crossover to push around. Given that the XT4’s target demographic is young urban dwellers, this shouldn’t matter in the least though when tooling around the nation’s cityscapes.
Both XT4s we drove were equipped with the optional all-wheel drive system. Switching between FWD and AWD is seamless, but it takes a few seconds to complete. In FWD mode on dry pavement, a firm boot of throttle from a stop led to a bit of wheel spin and light torque steer, while the XT4 moved out confidently under heavy acceleration in AWD mode. We wonder how many buyers will actually toggle between the FWD and AWD settings, but they should keep it primarily in FWD if they want to optimize fuel economy and lessen drivetrain wear.
We’re looking forward to getting more seat time in the XT4 and seeing how it compares with its rivals. But for now, we can safely say we enjoyed our first encounter with what’s bound to become a volume seller for Cadillac. And there’s more where the XT4 came from. Cadillac is promising a new model launch every six months through 2020, and if the XT4 is any indication, we’re betting the American luxury brand is in for more successes to come—especially now that we know more of the what behind the Y.

First Drive: 2019 Cadillac XT4
SEATTLE, Washington — We’ve been herded into a ballroom at the Four Seasons hotel in Seattle, where we’re listening to Cadillac reps explain the why behind their new ‘Y’ trim-level strategy, augmented by a fancy PowerPoint presentation. Listed on the left arm of the slide’s Y graphic are the Premium Luxury and Platinum trims, with Sport and V-Series on the right. At the base of the Y is the Luxury level. Y should you care? Because the 2019 Cadillac XT4, the marque’s all-new compact crossover we’ve come here to drive, represents the first implementation of Cadillac’s Y approach, that’s Y.
Cadillac says it’s aiming the XT4 at the entry-luxury, compact crossover set (think Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, etc.), though it feels at least a half-size bigger than any of those vehicles. The Cadillac team says it focused on providing more usable interior volume than the competitive set, and indeed, the XT4’s 39.5 inches of rear seat legroom beats all the players mentioned here, and its 22.5 cu-ft of cargo space with rear seats up, 48.9 with them down is better than most.
As for how it stacks up in the exterior looks department compared to the competition, we’d say pretty well, especially from the direct front or rear view. The 2019 XT4 sports a version of Cadillac’s new, thinner grille that first debuted on the CT6 sedan, with sleek and slim vertical headlights and similar taillights that echo one of the old CTS Wagon’s best styling traits. Let’s just say the profile isn’t its good side, with a generic appearance not unlike that of its General Motors stablemates. Standard wheels are 18 inches all trim levels, though each varies slightly in color.
That brings us back to the Y strategy. The base Luxury model checks in at $35,790 to start and features aluminum-color interior accents, leatherette seats, and satin aluminum exterior trim. For $40,290, buyers can veer either to the left or right side of the Y with the Sport or Premium Luxury trims. Choose the Sport path, and you get carbon-fiber interior and gloss black exterior trim, body color door handles, leatherette seats with sport accents, carbon-fiber or wood interior trim, a thicker steering wheel and unique pedals, and gloss black roof rails among other features. Premium Luxury takers get leather seats, wood or aluminum interior trim, satin aluminum exterior trim and roof rails, and nickel-finish door handles. Both upscale trims also receive front and rear park assist, lane change and side blind zone alerts, and rear cross traffic systems. A power liftgate, driver’s seat memory, and an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror are also part of the Premium Luxury package.
After reading all that you may be asking yourself, “Self, where are the V-Series and Platinum models at?” Not every Cadillac will get those treatments, but we suspect the XT4 will be at least going Platinum soon enough. All XT4s regardless of trim get Cadillac’s new 8.0-inch infotainment screen with the marque’s redesigned Cue system that does away with the frustrating haptic feedback switchgear in favor of a center-console mounted rotary knob controller. Located behind the gearshift lever, it’s further augmented by a volume knob and various quick key buttons. We had limited time to explore the setup in depth, but our cursory experience is that it’s an improvement over the outgoing Cue, mostly in terms of usability. We’re told this new rotary-knob system will find its way to other Cadillac models and is already being implemented on the CT6 sedan.
Under the hood of the XT4 is an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. While that’s down significantly from the old 2.0T’s 272 hp and 295 lb-ft, Cadillac says the engine is far more efficient thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger, cylinder deactivation, and the engine’s trick “Tripower” valvetrain system, which utilizes a shifting groove that effectively “slides” the cam lobe profile to one of three settings depending on driving condition. At the low end of the profile spectrum is the Active Fuel Management groove, which disables two cylinders and is designed for very light, freeway cruising; low valve lift is set up for balanced power and efficiency; and high valve lift engages when you need to put the hammer down in passing or hill climbing situations, for example. Additionally, the new engine’s peak torque comes on between 1,500-4,000 rpm compared to the outgoing engine’s 3,000-4,600 rpm, meaning in routine cruising conditions you’ll typically see the tach needle stay under 2,000 rpm, further optimizing fuel economy.
