Driving A Premium Used VW Polo
Polo and Polo Vivo - Few cars are as synonymous with local success as Volkswagen seminal compact city car duo.
Since its launch, the Polo hatch has consistently been the second best-selling passenger car in South Africa with its sibling the Vivo being the local best-seller.
South Africans love the Polo almost as much as they enjoy a good braai; nearly 23 000 Polos were sold in 2017 alone.
In January 2018, Volkswagen launched its sixth-generation Polo locally. One of the benefits of having a group-wide platform (MQB AO) means technology and features will trickle down from more premium offerings, such as the Golf.
Some used VW Polo’s are longer, wider and, given a host of new tech, more premium than their predecessors. The 2018 Polo was the first to be equipped with digital instruments (borrowed from the Golf).
The range comprises five 1.0 TSI derivates (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline) in two engine outputs; 70kW/175Nm and 85kW/200Nm. Both engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG box. 
The launch of the 2018 Polo was the culmination of an R 6.1-billion investment at VW’s factory in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, where the new hatch will be assembled and sold both locally and internationally.
Given its new features, sportier design and legacy, will the new Polo become another best-seller locally?

Driving it
What’s it like behind the wheel? In short, the 2018 model is more premium than the outgoing Polo, handles well on the road, offers a comfortable ride and is surprisingly brisk despite its 1.0-litre engine capacity (the only engine currently available until the 2.0-litre GTI arrives).
The 70kW version offers sufficient power and the 1-0-litre petrol performs adequately when mated to the 5-speed manual. The 7-speed DSG, another benefit from its Golf sibling, is incredibly smooth, swopping cogs accurately and with great rev-matching speed.
The 85kW Highline, mated to a DSG, elevates the Polo to Golf territory offering a comfortable, frugal (4.7-litres/100km) hatchback.
In terms of handling, the Polo offers enough grip for spirited driving with negligible body roll though city driving remains its strong suit.
The engine, especially in 70kW guise, has a laid-back approach and is a perfect match for its comfort-tuned suspension. Steering is precise, light and overall its agile enough to make a breeze of entering and extricating itself from tight parking spots. Overall, the Polo has grown up and has resolved many of the issues affecting the outgoing model.
The Polo has all the ingredients for a best-seller in SA and given its price point and positioning could grab sales from the high-end Golf.
Design
Like the Golf, Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Arteon, the Polo uses the VW group's MQB platform and as a result, gains many of the design and structural elements of its siblings.
It's a lot more assertive in appearance than its predecessor though borrows heavily from the current Golf especially its head- and taillights. The roofline is longer and a fine line runs along its flanks.
Range and dimensions
Based on the VW group's MQB A0 platform, the Polo sports new dimensions; length has been increased 81mm to 4053mm and wheelbase lengthened by 94mm to 2548mm. The hatchback is also 69mm wider to 1751mm though its height has been reduced by 7mm to 1461mm.
In addition to the three standard trim lines, the special edition Polo beats (with features including a 300-watt sound system), R-Line package (with a sporty exterior featuring C-shaped front air curtains, side sills, boot spoiler, rear diffuser and 17" Bonneville alloy wheels) and the performance-focused halo model, the Polo GTI, (available in South Africa in the second quarter), provide added variety.
Inside
A new dashboard and cockpit layout make its way into Volkswagen compact models. New for this generation of Polo are digital dials, a new dashboard, angled centre console as well as revised dials and controls. More than any other feature, the digital dash gives the Polo an upmarket position few of its rivals can match.
It’s a lot more practical too for families – boot space has increased from 280 to 351 litres.
Driver Assistance systems
New features for the Polo include the lane change system, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, semi-automated park assist, proactive occupant protection system and a manoeuvre braking function. The hatchback has optional keyless start.

R-Line:
The ‘R-Line' package makes the Polo even more dynamic with such features as 17-inch alloy wheels ('Bonneville'), a large, sporty front bumper and, at the rear, a diffuser with chrome trims and a roof spoiler. The Polo with R-Line package also has wrap-around black sill trim strips which visually press the car down to the road. The R-Line Package is only available in South Africa in the second quarter.
Convenience
The Polo can be further personalised and upgraded to satisfy individual budgets and tastes. New in the options programme are features such as high-intensity LED head- and tail light clusters and one of the largest panoramic sunroofs in its class (opening is 10mm wider and 20mm longer than before).

Popüler ralli oyunu Gran Turismo Sport için hazırlanan ücretsiz güncellemelerin sonuncusu henüz fırından yeni çıktı. Geliştirici ekip Polyphony Digital her zaman olduğu gibi bu sefer de sadece yeni yarış arabaları eklemekle yetinmedi, bu kez Laguna Seca pistini de oyuna dahil etti. Bundan bir önceki güncellemede oyundaki yerini alan Spa Francorchamps pisti gibi Laguna Seca da en son PlayStation 3’teki Gran Turismo 6’da karşımıza çıkmıştı. Haliyle ABD’nin Kaliforniya eyaletinde bulunan bu meşhur piste Gran Turismo hayranlarının pek yabancı olduğu söylenemez. Yine de oyunun güncel versiyonundaki yerini tekrardan alması olumlu bir gelişme.

Best Cars of the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show
This is the year the future arrived at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Yes, there are plenty of interesting and significant production debuts – Bentley’s new Continental GT, BMW’s new X3 and M5, Porsche’s new Cayenne, Hyundai’s small Kona crossover, and Ferrari’s Portofino, to name a few – but the buzz is all about hybrids and electric vehicles and autonomous driving. This is the Frankfurt show where Mercedes-Benz, the company that – with some justification – claims to have invented the automobile – announced it would soon be building an electric-powered one that didn’t have a steering wheel or pedals. Loud, colorful, and with the swaggering might of the German auto industry on full display, Frankfurt 2017 is indeed an auto show to remember. Here are our picks of the best from the show floor. Star of the Show: Mercedes-AMG Project ONE There are faster hypercars. There are sexier hypercars. But there has never been a road-legal hypercar with an actual Formula 1 powertrain. Only Daimler, rich, powerful, and at the top of its game, could have the audacity – and the technical knowhow – to create a car like the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. It shares most of its powerpack with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas grand prix racer that took Lewis Hamilton to victory in the 2015 Formula 1 World Driver’s Championship, and with more than 1000 hp on tap, it will be quicker than a Bugatti Chiron to 124 mph. The mere fact this car exists at all, complete with an airbag in the F1-style steering wheel and an air-conditioned cockpit, is cause for celebration. It’s the car at Frankfurt everyone wanted to see. –Angus MacKenzie Star of the Show: Kia ProCeed Concept As a child of the ‘60s, I’m exceptionally drawn to this car’s true four-door pillar-less door glass design. Sure, there is zero hope of providing adequate side-impact protection this way, but c’mon! Concept cars are supposed to be flights of fancy. I also love all the raw innovation in this design, from the “brightwork” surrounding the side glass that indeed glows with a remarkably uniform white LED light, to the seat fabric, which consists of 100 square meters (!) of black fabric that ends up looking a bit like shag carpet or something. This car is yet another milepost along the Korean automaker’s road from a “fast follower” copying designs and trends, to trend setter. We should be so lucky as to get anything nearing this car’s coolness on American roads in the near future. –Frank Markus Star of the Show: Kia ProCeed Concept The Kia Proceed is liquid lust in hot red. The four-door wagon concept looks like it is racing down the street even as it sits stationary on the stand. Unfortunately it will not be in motion on U.S. streets as this concept hints at the next generation of Kia’s Cee’d family for Europe. The look is clean, elegant, with beautiful proportions. The hood actually appears shorter than it is alongside the long body with no B pillar and the sharkfin trim at the C pillar. Inside, a tangle of shaved and unshaved ribbons on the seats: 100 square meters of black fabric in total. –Alisa Priddle Best Gotcha: Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Jaguar says it’s planning a one-make race series for the forthcoming all-electric I-Pace, and to prove the point showed a concept of what the racecar would look like on its Frankfurt show stand. Except the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy isn’t exactly a concept. Keen-eyed showgoers comparing it with the I-Pace concept will notice the race car has different exterior mirrors, different side windows, and slightly different styling around the rear hatch. They’d also notice the creases in the bodywork aren’t quite as sharp as those on the white concept, and that a pair of wipers are nestled at the base of the windshield. Yep, hiding in plain sight on the Jaguar stand is the production version of the swoopy I-Pace. Strip away the rear wing, the side skirts, the race-face front fascia, and the racy wheels and tires, and you’ll see exactly what the twin-motor I-Pace with around 400 hp and an anticipated EPA-rated range of about 220 miles will look like when it launches in the second half of 2018. –Angus MacKenzie Best Production Car: Bentley Continental GT At last, Bentley’s gran turismo gets the extravagant proportions it deserves, courtesy of the new VW Group MSB architecture it shares with Porsche’s Panamera. MSB, which is VW Group’s front-engine, rear and all-wheel-drive architecture, has allowed Bentley design boss Stefan Sielaff and his team to place the front wheels ahead of the engine, giving the new Conti GT the extended dash-to-axle ratio that’s been a hallmark of great British sports and luxury cars since the 1920s. The new Conti GT looks lower, sleeker, and more luxurious than its pug-nosed predecessor, with crisply tailored surfaces. Inside is an interior that ups the Bentley ante for knurled metal, rich leather, and beautifully finished wood, and does it in a thoroughly contemporary manner. –Angus MacKenzie Best Production Car: Land Rover Discovery SVX This is the first Discovery to get Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations treatment. The SUV gets a version of Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, tweaked to generate 517 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The SUV has an eight-speed automatic transmission and two-range transfer box. Not only will it be quick and powerful on the road, the SVO team gave it more ground clearance to go anywhere. The winch is standard and it will be hand-built at the SVO technical center with some unique body panels once it becomes available in 2018. –Alisa Priddle Best Production Car: Ferrari Portofino I never liked the California’s Nicki Minaj junk-in-the-trunk design, and the fact that this one’s basic hard points have changed so little and yet the overall look has transformed so thoroughly—and looks equally fabulous, hard-top up or down—is a real testament to the design geniuses now employed within Ferrari (not at go-to design house Pininfarina). The fact that its twin-turbo V-8 gets a 39-horse bump to within kissing distance of 600 hp is just icing on the Amaretti Cake. –Frank Markus Best Concept Car: Borgward Isabella concept The gorgeous two-tone coupe, with the darker blue on top and lighter shade below, has lines along the hood and headlights that are reminiscent of the original and stunning Isabella from the 1950s and early ‘60s. But this concept is a statement of new elegance and beauty with its sculpted sides and stylized greenhouse providing a fresh side silhouette with a C pillar that passes over the body. In addition to the wraparound taillights are headlights in an intriguing pattern that makes a yin yang pattern of Nike swooshes. Inside is a three-piece steering wheel that is appealing its simplicity and a touchscreen that cascades down from the center of the dash. Elements of the Isabella could make its way into future sedans from a company that has resurrected the past with this emotional design. –Alisa Priddle Best Concept Car: Honda Urban EV Concept With its clean, simple surfaces, and fenders flared over big wheels at each corner, the Honda Urban EV riffed on classic European hot hatches of the ’70s and ’80s, like the original Volkswagen Golf GTI and Peugeot’s 205 GTI. With a look and feel very much inspired by product design principles rather than styling whimsies, the tiny Honda—it’s four inches shorter than a Fit—is a welcome breath of fresh air from a Japanese automaker whose recent production vehicle designs have tendered to suffer from too much surface entertainment. Honda boss Takahiro Hachigo says the Urban EV previews a brand-new EV platform from the company, and a production version of the car will be on sale in Europe in 2019. –Angus MacKenzie Sketchiest Concept Vehicle: BMW X7 iPerformance Concept Oh dear. This one looks like the design team just stood back and said, “Welp, there’s gonna be no hiding the fact that this is a great big gigantic SUV, so let’s just own its gargantuan-ness.” Every design detail seems to have been chosen to accentuate the vehicle’s vertical bulk, from the disturbingly tall and toothy interpretation of the double-kidney grille to the giant L-shaped fender vents and rear fascia details. The incredibly fine pillars on the greenhouse end up looking insufficient to support the bulk of the body should the truck ever turn turtle. Here’s one we’re eager to see changed substantially on its way to production. –Frank Markus Biggest Head-Scratcher: Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Suspension Inside the spectacular Mercedes exhibit hall—which is arranged just like its museum in Stuttgart, in the round and spiraling down from several stories up—was a naked chassis of the highly anticipated F1-inspired hypercar. But after studying the front and rear suspension for 10 minutes or more, I could not for the life of me work out how the pushrod-actuated spring-damper units worked. That’s because both of them interconnect both pivot points. I look forward to watching an animation of them in action. –Frank Markus Most Innovative Parking Solution: Renault Symbioz Concept This concept takes integration a step further: the car talks to the house and the two become one. The demonstration shows the autonomous car with an interior where passengers face each other. Once at home, the car raises on a giant round pedestal to the inside of the home where it doubles as another room of the house and the two can share their energy, with electricity flowing to whichever needs it more. It is an extension of Renault’s long-running well-being theme, updated to a new tagline: French design, easy life. 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Kills the Manual Transmission
For the 2018 model year, Volkswagen of America is adopting an entirely different approach to its sports sedan transmission lineup than Honda and Subaru. Unlike the Honda Civic Si, which is available exclusively with a manual transmission, and unlike the Subaru WRX, which is available with a manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic, the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI will drop the manual transmission option. CarsDirect cites the lower-than-GTI manual take rate of only 30 percent as reason for excluding the three-pedal layout. Of course, many cars continue to offer manual shifters despite even lower take rates. The 2018 Kia Rio, Car And Driver reports, will only generate 5 percent of its volume with a manual transmission. That’s on par with industry average. Only 3 percent of Jaguar F-Types are sold with a manual transmission. Only 23 percent of Chevrolet Corvette buyers opt for a manual. 30 percent? That’s a downright impressive share for manual transmissions. SEE ALSO: 2017 Volkswagen Jetta Review The real cause of the Jetta GLI’s solo transmission act for 2018 — the six-speed DSG persists — is the tidying up of Jetta variants in the sixth-generation’s (likely) final model year. Volkswagen eliminated the Jetta Hybrid prior to the 2017 model year. The TDI diesel engine was obviously removed by wrongdoing. The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI will come in one iteration with no options, priced at $30,395. That’s up $580 compared with the 2017 Jetta GLI DSG. It’s also $1,680 more costly than the basic 2017 Jetta GLI. More importantly, the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI costs $2,880 more than the least costly 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI DSG, which is the superior sporting car. Volkswagen of America hasn’t released 2018 specifications for the Golf GTI but has confirmed manual availability. Volkswagen doesn’t release model breakdowns for the Jetta lineup, but based on inventory, the GLI accounts for roughly 14 percent of total Jetta sales. That would work out to around 1,400 monthly U.S. Jetta GLI sales. Volkswagen of America has averaged 1,868 monthly Golf GTI sales in 2017’s first three-quarters. Et nyt kapitel i Volkswagens historie, skrives med en ny Golf variant, som har gener fra motorsporten
Verdenspremieren på den nye Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR som konceptbil, fandt sted på sidste års store GTI-træf i Wörthersee i Østrig. Og nu er bilen klar til markedet, og landet i Danmark til en pris af 549.990 kroner.
Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR har gener fra racerbanen, hvor den også har sin inspiration fra. Racer-varianten har samme navn, og bilens specifikationer har sat sit præg på denne nye topmodel af Golf GTI.
Under hjelmen ligger en 2,0-liters TSI motor med turbo, som yder 290 hestekræfter fra 5.000 til 6.800 o/min. Momentet lyder på 370 Nm fra 1.600 til 4.300 o/min, og føres til hjulene gennem en syv-trins DSG gearkasse og et elektromekanisk spærredifferentiale.
Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR sprinter til 100 km/t på bare 5,6 sekunder, mens topfarten fra fabrikken er elektronisk begrænset til 250 km/t.
Topfarten kan øges
Ønsker man en højere topfart i Golf GTI TCR, kan den øges til 264 km/t. Det sker dog kun, hvis man bestiller bilen med udstyrspakken til 39.995 kroner ekstra. Pakken omfatter dog også en adaptiv sportsundervogn og 19-tommer matsorte Reifnitz alufælge.
Ønsker du en endnu mere trackday orienteret GTI TCR, så kan der også bestilles en anden udstyrspakke til 54.990 kroner, der tilmed omfatter semislicks-sportsdæk og 19-tommer Pretoria alufælge.
På det ydre kan man kende Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR på den nydesignede forkofanger, som har sine luftindtag i hver side (til de ekstra kølere) som er markeret med stylingselementer i sort højglans samt en frontspoiler. Dertil har bilen også en ekstra skarp splitter, ligesom baneraceren.
Hen ad siden er der kommet nye sideskørter som fortsætter til bagkofangeren, hvor der er placeret en markant diffuser med integrerede udstødningsrør i hver side. Øverst på bagenden er der en ny tagspoiler, der giver øget downforce til baghjulene og dermed en bedre stabilitet.
Vil du pynte yderligere på bilen, kan den tilmed bestilles med en speciel dekorfolie i et såkaldt Honeycomb-design til 9.990 kroner samt en Akrapovic-udstødning for en ekstra fed lyd.
Bag de store 18-tommer Belvedere alufælge på Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, finder du nogle perforerede bremseskiver og specielle bremsekalibre og bremseklodser, som hjælper med til at få bilen ned i fart igen og giver en sportslig kørsel.

Kabinen byder på nye lækkerier
I kabinen kan du vælge mellem køreprogrammerne Eco, Normal, Sport og Individual. Sidste profil i rækken giver dig mulighed for at justere på styretøjet, motorkarakteren, DSG-gearkassen og den adaptive DCC-undervogn (ekstraudstyr).
Derudover er der nye lækre sportssæder foran i mikrofiber/stof, som er specielt designet til Golf GTI TCR. Sædernes midte har en kontrastfarve i ‘Flash red’, der matcher bilens syninger på det læderbeklædte sportsrat. Rattet har aftryk på klokken 3 og 9, samt en rød linje i toppen.
Dørsiderne og gearstangen har ligeledes fået mikrofiber indtræk med røde striber, og sikkerhedsselerne er røde på kanterne.
Som standard får Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR det digitale Active Info Display, som giver mulighed for at tilpasse instrumenteringen som man har lyst.
Hvad er TCR-serien?
TCR-serien, der blev etableret i 2015, kombinerer topklasse race med teknologi fra serieproducerede biler. 4- og 5-dørs biler med 2-liters benzin- eller dieselmotorer er tilladte, og bilerne køres udelukkende af private team.
Udover den internationale verdensomspændende ”TCR International Series”, afvikles serien mange steder også på nationalt plan. Golf GTI TCR baneraceren vandt verdensmesterskabet i 2016 og 2017 og har allerede vundet 12 nationale titler.
Volkswagen Motorsport har siden 2016 håndbygget og leveret mere end 100 styk af racerversionen til private team. Den nuværende Golf GTI TCR-baneracer sender 350 hk og 420 Nm ned i forhjulene.

What's the used Volkswagen Polo hatchback like?
What’s so clever about the VW Polo for sale is that it shares many of the attributes that buyers love about its larger sibling, the Volkswagen Golf, but in a smaller and cheaper to run package. Trouble is, the used small car class is a highly competitive one, packed with rivals, so it's a good job the Polo distinguishes itself by having an added layer of sophistication about it, without costing as much as an Audi A1. The used Polo is one of the best small cars for tackling big trips. In a 2014 facelift, that engine was later replaced by a 1.0-litre with 59bhp or 74bhp. The 74bhp version is okay for town work but runs out of puff on the motorway. In the original line-up, there was also a bigger 1.4-litre unit that's much happier, but it’s the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre turbo petrol engines from 2014 onwards that make the most sense; they’re smooth and quiet, but also fuel-efficient. The diesel engines, particularly the Bluemotion models, are great if you do lots of miles, since they return fantastic fuel economy figures. The Polo comes in a number of flavours: S, S A/C, Moda, SE, Bluemotion, SEL and R-Line. We'd avoid S models because they're very basic and don't even have remote central locking. S A/C has air-con, Moda has air-con as an option but adds a unique set of 15in alloys, front fog lights and an iPod connection for the stereo. SE, though, is a far better choice; it comes with 15in alloy wheels, air-con and electric door mirrors. 
On top of the standard equipment, Bluemotion versions mostly add fuel-saving aerodynamics and technology, but also add cruise control. R-Line trim provides sportier exterior and interior features, while top-spec SEL has 16in alloys, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake, a front centre armrest and extra storage drawers under the front seats. 
Revised 2014 cars in SE spec and above received a 6.5in colour touchscreen infotainment system. With the optional Car-Net system, you can connect your smartphone via a USB connection, supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or MirrorLink smartphone integration. Match came in later to replace SE and Moda, adding cruise control, rear parking sensors and front foglights. Match Edition became available from 2017 onwards and added the Convenience Pack, which included automatic lights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, auto wipers, electric folding mirrors, front parking sensors and Car-Net as standard.
BlueGT is the only model to get the 1.4 TSI petrol engine that uses cylinder deactivation technology to save fuel, while the GTI has model-specific exterior look, sports suspension and 17in alloys.
Thanks to its composed ride, excellent visibility and light controls, the Polo is an easy car to drive in town. Keen drivers, however, will be better off with the Fiesta, which is more composed in bends and has sharper steering. However, the Polo is very refined for a small car, making it a great choice for those who regularly have to commute on the motorway.
Used three- and five-door versions are in plentiful supply, both offering more room for passengers than the equivalent Fiesta. The Polo's driving position offers loads of adjustment, with even the entry-level S version having a height-adjustable driver's seat. The boot is a decent size, although Bluemotion models do without split-folding rear seats in order to save weight, and therefore maximise fuel economy. 
Notable accolades for this generation of Polo include being voted European Car the Year in 2010 and scoring top marks in Euro NCAP’s crash tests, with all models being fitted with electronic stability control as standard. Article from Used Car Chat

Volkswagen Jettas show encouraging pace after testing weekend
Mdakane and Masters lock out the front row in GTC 2 qualifying
Golf GTi’s dominate both GTC 2 races
South Africa’s premier circuit racing series, the Sasol GTC, got underway in front of packed grandstands at Cape Town’s Killarney International Circuit this weekend. It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Volkswagen Motorsport squad who experienced both the highs and lows that the sport can dish out in a single weekend.
Both Mathew Hodges and Daniel Rowe had great pace during all of Friday’s free practise sessions. The nature of GTC racing is such that times are usually very close between South Africa’s top racing drivers and the opening day of the 2017 season was no different. For most of the day less than 2 tenths of a second separated the top 5 or 6 drivers, with Hodges and Rowe right in the middle of the action. Unfortunately, qualifying didn’t go according to plan with Hodges just not quite managing to put together the perfect lap. “You need to get every corner and every braking marker just perfect if you want to qualify in the front. We didn’t, but we know exactly what we need to when the flag drops for race 1,” said Hodges who ended the session with the 5th fastest time.
Daniel Rowe’s first qualifying session in the Sasol GTC series didn’t go according to plan either. “I was happy with my pace throughout practise, but unfortunately the Jetta developed a mysterious misfire during qualifying,” said Rowe who was relegated to the back of the field. “We just have to prove our mettle during both races now.”
There was much better news for the Volkswagen crews in the GTC 2 category of SA’s premier racing formula. Mandla Mdakane initially missed out on pole position by the smallest of margins, but a technical infringement by the original polesetter promoted Mdakane to the front of the grid. Teammate and GTC rookie Keagan Masters locked out the front row for Volkswagen by setting the second fastest time in his Golf 7 GTi.
Raceday dawned bright an early with the usual passionate Killarney crowd in attendance to witness the action, and as is soon becoming the case with GTC racing, they were not disappointed.
The two Volkswagen Jettas of Hodges and Rowe started their campaigns from 5th and 7th on the grid respectively, but both were quick out the blocks. Hodges quickly made up a position as he moved into 4th, but young Rowe put in a sterling performance from 7th on the grid. In fact, he dropped to 8th as they went into the first corner, but less than 2 laps later and after making a few passes stick, he took over 4th position from his teammate. The two continued to have a spectacular fight until the last lap when lady luck decided to get involved. “The car simply cut out, the engine let go and we had to pull off the circuit,” said Rowe.
Hodges crossed the line and claimed the points that come with a 4th place finish despite also noticing a vibration under the Jetta’s bonnet. “We’re happy with the points. You need to make sure you finish the races early in the season in order to be able to fight later,” said Hodges after race 1.
The team was looking forward to the opportunity to improve during race two, but it soon became clear that Daniel Rowe would not play a further part. The damage under the Jetta’s bonnet was too severe. With the hopes of the team resting on his shoulders, Hodges set off on race two and immediately moved into 3rd and a podium position, but in yet another twist of fate, his engine decided to call it a day just two laps from the end. “It’s exactly what we didn’t want. It’s motorsport, but still, it’s very frustrating,” said a disappointed Hodges.
“Everyone knows that speed and talent are not enough and that sometimes you need a bit of luck too. Although we are encouraged by the good pace we’ve shown so early in the season, we didn’t have any luck today,” concluded Mike Rowe.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom in Cape Town. The GTC 2 brigade of Mdakane and Masters put on a great show for the fans as they tussled for victory in both races. Add another Golf in the form of Trevor Bland to the mix and the GTC 2 battle turned into the one to watch. Young Keagan Masters overcame his teammate Mandla Mdakane to take victory in race 1, with Bland’s second position the Golf in the so-called Volkswagen Motorsport sandwich. Race two was much of the same with Masters having to work harder than ever to take the double. Bland again finished on his bumper with Mdakane just inches behind.

It’s very encouraging to see our youngsters climbing the ladder and learning the ropes. Now we just need Lady Luck to join the party and when she does, we’ll be ready,” concluded Rowe.
The second round in the Sasol GTC Series will take place at the iconic Kyalami circuit in Midrand on April 21 and 22.
