Jordan Clarkson to Nick Young: ‘Enjoy and get buckets’
MANILA, Philippines—If there’s one player who knows all about representing the Philippines and playing with former NBA veteran Nick Young, it’s Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson and Young were teammates from 2014 to 2017 with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Fil-American guard also suited up for the Philippine national team in the fourth window of the Fiba World Cup Asia Qualifiers last August and the 2018…

Phoenix sign Zhou Qi for NBL22
South East Melbourne Phoenix have confirmed the signing of Chinese superstar Zhou Qi for the 2022 NBL season. The 7-foot-1 centre, who was selected 43rd overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, has been a regular part of the Chinese national team since his debut in 2014.The acquisition of Chinese superstar Zhou Qi on a two-year agreement by the South East Melbourne Phoenix is a historic transaction that seems destined to take the team global.
Zhou returned to the Chinese Basketball Association for the 2019-20 season where he averaged 20.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game. At 25-years-old Zhou has already built a solid resume winning a CBA championship title in 2017, a FIBA Asia Cup championship in 2015 and a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games with the Chinese National Basketball team.
The Phoenix capitalised on Zhou Qi’s international fame and spread a variety of images and videos of their new signing across social media platforms. Most of the content was covered with the south east phoenix lime green colour and logo, allowing the international fans to easily recognise and identify his new club. The organisation also built momentum prior to his arrival in Australia as they posted content of him in quarantine and practicing in China, making fans eager and excited to watch him in action for the upcoming season.

Senate allows 2 naturalized athletes to play for PH flag
#PHnews: Senate allows 2 naturalized athletes to play for PH flag
MANILA – Senators on Monday allowed Ivorian cager Kakou Ange Franck Williams Kouame and Spanish footballer Bienvenido Morejon Marañon to play in international leagues under the Philippine flag.
All 23 senators present voted to approve on third and final reading House Bill No. 8631 under Committee Report No. 188 granting Filipino citizenship to 34-year-old striker Morejon, hoping to play with Philippine Azkals.
The senators also voted 23-0-0 to pass on third reading House Bill No. 8632 under Committee Report No. 189 granting citizenship to Kouame in the hope of having him join Gilas Pilipinas in international competitions, including the upcoming window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers and the country's hosting of 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, said the naturalization process "values the opportunity to become more closely knit to the fabric of Philippine society”.
“We are excited for them to be naturalized because they have proven that they really want to be Filipinos, but they also have to be exemplary, to be an inspiration to the Filipinos,” he added.
Gordon emphasized that naturalization is a privilege, not a right, and that the candidates must have moral values and should be free from any legal impediment.
The counterpart versions of the measures, Senate Bill No. 1391, filed by Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri for Marañon, and Senate Bill No. 2058, authored by Gordon for Kouame, were passed on second reading last week, amending the effectivity of the law to immediately.
Since counterpart measures were already passed in the House of Representatives last month, both measures will become a law after the President signs them and after its publication in Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation.
Kouame, a 6'10" center of the Ateneo de Manila University, came to the Philippines in 2016 to try out for the Blue Eagles. He was named UAAP Rookie of the Year in 2018.
His naturalization is being pushed by Senator Sonny Angara, who is also chairperson of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
"I think Ange is not really here just to play basketball, but he's really here to make the Philippines his home. He's grown up, he has a barkada here, he has friends, he has an organization that cares for him and is really prepared to help him settle in," Angara said.
Marañon, who came to the Philippines in May 2015, played for Ceres Negros Football Club, which is one of the teams in the Philippines Football League (PFL). He was named top scorer and awarded as best import player in 2017, 2018, and 2019. (PR)

3-PT. SHOTS DESTROY, ELIMINATE GILAS
No, it was not the Korean hex or jinx that did the Philippines in this time. It was, pure and simple, an old-fashioned drubbing that the Filipinos received from their South Korean rivals that seemed to have had their number over the past three decades, or over the greater part of the 40-plus years that the local pro league, the PBA, has existed.
The South Koreans hit 16 of their 21 three-point shots and ran rings around the Gilas Pilipinas squad 118-86 to complete one of the most lopsided losses ever dealt the Philippines in Asian competitions and eliminate the Filipinos from championship contention in that blowout win in the knockout quarterfinals of the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup that ended mercifully early this morning in Manila.
It was the fourth-worst loss ever suffered by the Philippines against South Korea, being dwarfed only by a 121-74 crushing it sustained in the then-Asian Basketball Confederation competitions in 1975, when the Philippines first sent an all-collegiate squad after the PBA was formed, a 98-63 rout in the same conclave in 1999, and a 132-99 drubbing by the Lee Chung-hee-led Korean squad that won the Asian Games gold in 1982.
This morning’s loss was actually a big letdown for the Filipinos, who started the tournament with a huge 96-87 upset of defending champion China despite the absence of naturalized import Andray Blatche and the injured June Mar Fajardo, and then swept its group with an 84-68 rout of Iraq and an 80-74 decision over Qatar in the eliminations to draw a bye as the next two teams knocked each other out for the right to enter the quarterfinals.
But the Koreans, led by Kim Sun-hyung and Oh Se-keun, led a well-balanced Korean attack that saw the Koreans erect a 16-point lead in the first half before settling for a 57-49 halftime lead as Terrence Romeo waged a one-man war for the Philippines by scoring all of his 22 points in the second quarter.
The game was still manageable at this point, but once the second half started, the Koreans would step up the pace some more. The Koreans finally breached the 20-point mark in margin when Choi Jun-yong hit a three-pointer for a 77-55 lead with 3:37 left in the third quarter, and it was all a matter of by how much the Koreans would win from there.
Choi would become one of three South Koreans to hit three three-pointers each, and eight players in all would hit at least one, underscoring the Koreans’ mastery of the skill that has made them a power in Asian competitions. Meanwhile, five Filipinos, including Romeo who hit 6-of-10, hit at least one three-pointer, but in contrast to the Koreans, the Filipinos seemed to find it hard to get an open look, or be consistent enough to be a real threat from that distance.
If the Philippines is to get back into the elite circle, much less regain supremacy at least in Asia, more local players would have to prioritize this skill. The South Koreans just showed them the difference such proficiency could make. – Bert A. Ramirez

Napheesa Collier finds perfect home with the Minnesota Lynx
From one winning culture to another, Collier will thrive in Minnesota.
Napheesa Collier’s been one of UConn’s most important and best all-around players since her sophomore season in Storrs, and led the Huskies to the Final Four of the tournament this year as one of two seniors on the team. Now she’s headed to the Lynx as the 6th overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Collier’s 6’2 size and 6’6 wingspan allowed her to score 21 points per night on 62 percent shooting and grab 11 rebounds as Connecticut’s leading bucket-getter and most imposing paint presence.
Despite her strong numbers, it was a season of snubs for Collier, who wasn’t named a Player of the Year finalist. A quartet of expected first-round picks in Asia Durr (Louisville), Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame), Megan Gustafson (Iowa), and Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon) were given finalist nods, which left plenty in Connecticut unhappy.
WNBA teams know well who Collier is and the physicality she brings, though. She played on Dawn Staley’s FIBA World Cup USA team in training camp, scored 22 points, grabbed 20 boards, and dished seven assists in three games. Her best game came in an intersquad scrimmage when she scored 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting with nine rebounds and four assists, matched up against Nneka Ogwumike. She’s pro-ready.
Napheesa Collier is tonight's @Acura Player of the Game as voted by you!#BleedBlue pic.twitter.com/sBQjMIgZu2
— UConn Huskies (@UConnHuskies) March 23, 2019
Collier’s skills are more fundamental than those projected higher than hers in the draft, though nothing she does is basic. She’s an elite inside scorer, and terrific passing out of the post and finding cutters, a skill she credits former Husky Gabby Williams for teaching.
Why Lynx fans should be excited for Collier
In Collier, the W is getting a post threat with soft touch. She was second in the country in two-point makes, per Her Hoops Stats, and No. 11 in percentage from that range at 65 percent. She also ranked No. 32 in free throw attempts, using her 6’2 frame to draw contact on the interior. That’s how she averaged 21 points per game
Collier’s a board-crasher too, ranking inside the top 30 in rebounds per game at 10.8, including 3.2 on the offensive end. She’s an elite big, but a skilled passer as well. Collier’s 1.77 assists-to-turnover ratio ranks inside the top 200 as she dishes 3.6 assists per night. Surrounded by shooters, Collier knows when best to pass out of contested shots for her teammates to fire from distance. She should fit seamlessly as an undersized small-ball forward when teams want to push the tempo.
Time will tell if that’s something she can only do at the pro-level in spurts, or if she can evolve into a Candace Parker or Elena Delle Donne type of guard/forward.
Why Lynx fans should be worried about Collier
The WNBA is becoming more of a three-point shooting league each year. Last year’s champion Seattle Storm team fired 24 per game, nearly three more than the league leader in 2017 and 2016. In 2015, the Tulsa Shock led the W with 18.6. Times are changing.
Three-point shooting hasn’t been a major part of Collier’s game though, as she shot just 21 percent on 1.4 tries per game in 2018-19. For her career, she’s made 31 percent of the 143 she’s taken, but her shooting’s sloped downward with age. Even her free-throw numbers have dipped from 83 percent her sophomore year to 70 percent her senior year. But Collier’s confident her new improved shot mechanics will turn her into more of a perimeter threat.
“Last year I had this hitch that kind of jerked backwards at the top of my shot,” Collier told SB Nation. “I’ve really been trying to smooth that out and make sure it’s one, fluent motion.”
Collier will need to improve as an outside shooter to become an all-star caliber player in the W, and she knows this. Her corrected mechanics will help, and she may even simply improve with opportunity in the W. At UConn, she’s mostly asked to camp the paint.
The question of how much she improves in those areas could determine if she can be a WNBA team’s best or second-best player.

Pregame song? “Sometimes I listen to Queen, sometimes I listen to Drake. It depends on the mood I’m in.”
Favorite WNBA and NBA player and why?: “In the WNBA, it’s always been Maya Moore because we’re from the same hometown, so I grew up following her. She has been my favorite for as long as I can remember.
I really like Kevin Durant’s style of play. I tried to play like him when I was younger because he’s so long and can really do everything.”
Most used app on your phone? “Probably iBooks. I read a lot. I like mysteries and a lot of fiction stuff. I liked Unbroken, like World War II stuff, romance stuff.”
Cats or Dogs? Which kind? Dogs. I like mid-sized dogs like golden retrievers and goldendoodles.
Favorite meme? “Oh my gosh, I love memes. You know the white guy that blinks really hard? Yeah, I really love that one.”
If you didn’t play basketball, what would you want to make a career doing: “I’d want to be a book critic so I could read for a living.”

GILAS Pilipinas 101: Who’s Better — Isaiah Austin or Andre Blatche?
As expected, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas placed 5th in the recently concluded 2017 FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Chenzhou, China — that is after beating Mono Vampire BC of Thailand, 89-79, where import Isaiah Austin recorded 37 points, 15 boards, 6 assists and 6 blocks.
Austin’s domination was not surprising though, after all, Chooks already faced the Thais earlier and won, 115-102 — so, both teams are…

Uichico named Gilas Men coach for ACQ bubble
#PHnews: Uichico named Gilas Men coach for ACQ bubble
MANILA – Jong Uichico has been named the head coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers (ACQ) November window.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio made the announcement in an online press conference on Thursday.
Uichico, SBP program director for Gilas Men Tab Baldwin, and Boyet Fernandez were initially named to the Nationals' coaching staff last week, but it was not revealed who is the official chief gaffer until Panlilio's public announcement.
Uichico has been known as a champion in the professional ranks, winning nine Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) titles with three teams - - San Miguel, Ginebra, and TNT.
Uichico also handled the Philippines on various occasions before his new stint, the last being the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.
Uichico will coach a team consisting of current and recently graduated collegiate standouts, known as the Gilas Cadets, as the first team mainstays are unavailable due to the PBA bubble in Angeles.
Handling an all-Cadets lineup is not new to Uichico as he was actually the head coach for Gilas Cadets, then known as Sinag Pilipinas, in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
However, this is the first time Uichico will actually coach the Cadets in a FIBA-sanctioned event.
"It's a welcome challenge. It's something new, but I always welcome the challenge," said Uichico.
Gilas Men are currently inside a training bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.
"We're trying to do the best we can in trying to make them ready for the international game," Uichico shared what his coaching staff is doing inside the bubble. "We're trying to keep things as simple as possible--things that they can comprehend and execute the best way they can."
He added that they will fly for Manama, Bahrain on Sunday.
Gilas Men will play the November window of the FIBA ACQ inside a bubble in Bahrain's capital city.
They are initially scheduled to face Thailand twice on Nov. 26 and 30 with a Nov. 28 battle between South Korea in between.
However, a revised schedule surfaced on Monday night could see Gilas Men possibly playing a game for four straight days from Nov. 27-30.
Panlilio said the SBP is appealing to FIBA to retain the original schedule instead of the proposed daily grind.
Gilas Men are grouped with South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia in Group A of the ACQ.
However, South Korea has been vocal recently about possibly begging off from the Bahrain bubble.
There were also uncertainties on whether Thailand will still show up until the team confirmed its participation by parading an all-pro lineup. (PNA)

PINOYS GET VENGEFUL WIN OVER CHINA
Big, big win by Gilas Pilipinas!
The Philippines, never given a ghost of a chance against powerhouse China with naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche opting to pass on joining the squad and June Mar Fajardo out with a calf injury, scored a huge 96-87 victory over the Chinese in its first outing in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup. It was a near wire-to-wire victory for the Filipinos in the tournament being held in Beirut, Lebanon, with China falling behind by as many as 17 points before taking its first lead with some five minutes left at 83-82.
The Chinese, however, could not hit their shots in the last two minutes in the face of a tough Filipino defense to eventually fall against an undermanned Gilas Pilipinas team.
Terrence Romeo was the biggest hero in the Filipinos' huge victory, firing eight unanswered points to tow Gilas to a 92-87 lead that all but settled the outcome after falling behind 87-84. Romeo, who to our mind is developing into the best Filipino player outside the big Fajardo, had a game-high 26 points to lead the Philippines' big victory.
Christian Standhardinger, the Fil-German who was thrust into a major role with Blatche and Fajardo out, also played a vital part in the victory with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Japeth Aguilar had a game-high five blocked shots, two of them in the crucial stretch that prevented the Chinese from coming back after the Filipinos fell behind for the first time before regaining the initiative on Romeo's hot shooting.
It was a vengeful win for the Philippines, which lost to the Chinese in the finals of the FIBA Asia Cup held in Changsha, China in 2015. The Philippines is bracketed in Group B with China, Iraq and Qatar in the so-called “group of death” in the tournament. The group topnotchers in each of the four groups will automatically qualify for the quarterfinal round, with the second- and third-ranked teams facing each other for the right to join the group topnotcher. - Bert A.
