Follow @alkalineherbshop Cleaning your home may elevate mood and promote better health. ⠀ One study from Indiana University determined that people with clean houses report more physical activity than people with messy houses. ⠀ Another 2010 study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who describe their homes as cluttered or messy reported more fatigue and depressed mood than women who described their homes as restorative or restful. The women with messier homes also had higher levels of cortisol, a major stress hormone. (Chronically elevated cortisol is associated with negative health outcomes like depression, weight gain, and diabetes.) These findings stood even after the researchers controlled for other factors like marriage satisfaction and neuroticism. ⠀ Research from Psychological Science shows that being in a cluttered environment—which is stressful and distracting for the brain—may lead to poorer coping strategies, such as unhealthy food choices (e.g., reaching for a candy bar instead of an apple). Meanwhile, being in an organized space promotes healthy food choices and greater generosity. ⠀ It could be that people who are more likely to take care of their homes are simply more likely to take care of their bodies, too. But the link between a clean living space and better mood is intuitive.
