One man crime tsunami
DENVER (KDVR) — A man who escaped from a federal prison in Littleton, Colorado, in 2018 has been apprehended in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Authorities say they found him living a “flashy” assumed identity. Allen Todd May, 58, had been on the run since Dec. 21, 2018, when he escaped from the Englewood Federal Correctional Institution. May originally stole a Bureau of Prisons work truck and drove off the prison grounds without anyone noticing. *** a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman told NewsNation affiliate KDVR-TV the trail for May turned cold for years until an anonymous tipster surfaced a few months ago. He was seen in a photo taken at a high society fundraiser that was published in the Palm Beach Daily News in mid-May. The caption listed him as Jacob Turner. May was arrested Monday night at a Fort Lauderdale home less than 2 miles from the ocean. Investigators said the home is valued at nearly $1.5 million. When U.S. Marshals arrested him, they say May was wearing a Rolex watch and driving a Mercedes car that agents believe was worth about $125,000.*** When he escaped, May had nine years left on a 20-year prison sentence for securities fraud. He was convicted of stealing $6.8 million through a Ponzi scheme. But even when he was behind bars, investigators think he managed to steal another $700,000 through fraud. A scheme worth $700K — all from behind bars May was indicted in June 2022 on 17 counts of wire and mail fraud, plus one count of escape. From 2016-2018, when May was still behind bars, he allegedly set up fake energy companies, according to the indictment. Just about every state has an account for unclaimed property. Investigators say May set up sham companies in Texas through the secretary of state’s website and then found unclaimed oil and gas royalties that had never been paid out in Kansas, Louisiana, and North Dakota. May contacted those states and portrayed himself as a representative of those companies, according to the indictment. He claimed that “entities controlled by him were entitled to oil and gas royalties that had not yet been claimed by the true owners.”***

Chad Stall is the proprietor of Arbor Pros Tree Service in the Tampa, Florida area. He drives a white Ford truck with the company logo on it. He crashed into a motorcycle on US Highway 301 on June 9 killing David Adams, 59, and badly injuring his girlfriend Tiffany Fletcher, 38. Police had no leads other than a video that appeared to show the Arbor P
Ismael Gonzalez saw the crash and chased the truck. He told Stall to return to the accident scene. Stall promised to do so, but never returned. Gonzalez then left Arbor Pros a 1-star google review, noting the crash and the broken promise. That led the Hillsborough County sheriff to Stall.

A man was fatally stabbed on a Metro Green Line train in Hawthorne Wednesday evening, but not before shooting his alleged assailant in the chest. The unidentified victim, a man believed to be in his early to mid 20s, died at a local hospital after deputies found him “suffering from apparent stab wounds to the upper torso” on a train at the Crenshaw Station at about 7:20 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. The station at 11902 S. Crenshaw Blvd. is on one of Los Angeles Metro’s suggested public transit routes to Taylor Swift’s upcoming shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The victim’s assailant, a man in his mid to late 30s, was taken into custody and “transported to a local hospital for apparent gunshot wounds to the upper torso,” the release said.*** https://ktla.com/news/local-news/man-shoots-his-killer-during-stabbing-on-metro-train-in-hawthorne-lasd-says/

On 8/2/2023 around 7:30 p.m., Officers were called out to the Sonic at Tulsa Hills on 81st St in reference to a stabbing. When Officers arrived, they found the male victim with a flagpole through his head. The pole entered the victim's head beneath his jaw and exited the other side of his head near his right temple area. The American Flag was still attached the pole at the time. Multiple witnesses said they saw the suspect, identified as Clinton Collins, charge at the victim and stab him with the flagpole through his head. The witnesses said they also heard Collins say, "That's what he gets. He deserved it."*** Firefighters with the Tulsa Fire Department had to cut part of the flagpole in order to fit the victim into the ambulance. Miraculously, we're told the victim will survive his injuries, but will likely lose an eye. Clinton Collins was arrested for Maiming AFCF (After Former Conviction of a Felony).*** https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=661890179307277&set=a.215522740610692

*** The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office released its report for 78-year-old Sheila Wobbeking’s death on Tuesday. Wobbeking died at her Plymouth home on July 5 after a medical emergency. However, the medical examiner determined that the medical emergency that ended her life stemmed from injuries she suffered a week earlier. According to Maple Grove Police Commander Jon Wetternach, Wobbeking called police on the afternoon of June 27, saying her daughter, Nicole Wobbeking, had assaulted her. It allegedly happened at a home in the 11900 block of 71st Avenue in Maple Grove, where Nicole Wobbeking lived, although court documents state the home was owned by her mother and she was just the tenant. Sheila Wobbeking told police that she’d gone to the home to talk about some issues that neighbors had brought to her attention as well as unpaid rent. When she got to the home, her daughter didn’t answer so she went inside and continued calling for her daughter. That’s when Nicole allegedly came out of a room, started yelling obscenities at her mother and slapped her in the face, then pushed her down several stairs, according to court documents. She also allegedly hit her mother in the ribs and hips with a can of unopened pasta sauce. Sheila was able to get outside and wait for the police with her granddaughter. She was taken to a hospital and diagnosed with a broken ankle before being released.*** https://kstp.com/kstp-news/local-news/police-plymouth-woman-died-week-after-being-assaulted-by-daughter-death-ruled-homicide/

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office investigators have arrested a doctor who is accused of hiding a camera at Ochsner Medical Center to record staffers as they used the restroom at the hospital in Old Jefferson. Andrew Matthews, 31, of Jefferson, was booked with 10 counts of video voyeurism after he was detained Wednesday morning at the hospital in the 1500 block of Jefferson Highway, said Capt. Jason Rivarde, a Sheriff's Office spokesperson. Detectives have identified at least 10 individual victims in the "dozens of videos" recorded inside the bathrooms, Rivarde said.*** An unnamed employee discovered the camera Wednesday morning while using the restroom and reported the device, according to Rivarde. *** The hospital contacted the Sheriff's Office about 11:30 a.m., Rivarde said. Security identified Matthews as a possible suspect and turned the camera over to detectives. The single device appears to have been placed in "staff only" restrooms, which are unisex, according to authorities. The Sheriff's Office did not say how long they believe Matthews had been recording co-workers. *** https://www.nola.com/news/jefferson_parish/andrews-matthews-ochsner-bathroom-spy-camera-jpso/article_29252db0-3216-11ee-9eac-9f02126d0ca5.html

CV NEWS FEED // A video of a young man who was arrested for reading the Bible at a pride event in Wisconsin went viral last weekend. In the video, Marcus Schroeder, 19, is arrested without warning or explanation. He had been reading a passage from the Bible into a microphone next to a “Pride in the Park” event in Watertown, Wisconsin. According to Schroeder, the event lasted from 10 am to 6 pm and was attended by 100-200 Christian protesters. Schroeder attended the event with a ministry group called “Warriors for Christ.” “We went out there and were preaching the Gospel, passing out tracts, holding some signs, and just kind of being a public witness against what was going on, talking to people at the event,” Schroeder said. At around 3 pm, Schroeder said he began to use the group’s microphone and speaker to read Galatians 5, a passage about love, from the sidewalk outside the barrier that had been set up for the event. “And as soon as I start reading from that passage, a bunch of officers come and surround me,” he said, noting that the officers gave him no warning and were hostile towards him. “The officer in the video grabs my hand, grabs my arm and kind of twists it down, tries to pull the mic away from me, and then all of a sudden, an officer behind me grabs my other arm, and they handcuffed me, arrested me,” Schroeder said. He was detained for about an hour and was given two citations—one for “unauthorized sound amplification,” and one for resisting arrest. “When I asked the officer how I resisted the arrest, he essentially said it was because my muscles tensed up,” Schroeder recalled. *** https://catholicvote.org/young-man-arrested-for-reading-bible-outside-pride-event/

13For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says a high-profile sexual predator was arrested Tuesday night. He is identified as Glenn Braden, 20, of Evergreen. The arrest happened after the sheriff's office said the suspect exposed himself to two separate and solo female hikers at Stapleton Park near the Beaver Brook Trail just after 6 p.m. Tuesday. *** Investigators believe Braden is the same suspect wanted in a series of similar encounters targeting lone female hikers beginning on April 3 at Flying J Ranch Park in Conifer. Former San Luis Valley DA sues his disbarred successor for $5 million over bogus felony charge
Then-DA Alonzo Payne filed unfounded embezzlement charge against predecessor Robert Willett last year
Former 12th Judicial District Attorney Robert Willett filed a $5 million federal lawsuit Tuesday against his successor and the district attorney’s office after he was wrongly prosecuted for embezzlement. Willett’s successor, the now-disbarred former district attorney Alonzo Payne, brought the felony charge against Willett in March 2022, days after Willett publicly called for Payne’s resignation. Willett claims in the lawsuit that the baseless charge was filed “as an act of sheer retaliation” for his public criticism of Payne. Payne resigned as district attorney for the 12th Judicial District in the San Luis Valley in July 2022 after an investigation by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office found he repeatedly violated crime victims’ rights. He also was facing a recall effort led by the city of Alamosa. Payne was disbarred in September in part because of his investigation into and prosecution of Willett, state records show. “…During a political campaign to recall Payne from office, Payne began an investigation and filed criminal charges against the previous district attorney, a political rival and critic of Payne,” a stipulation to discipline reads. “Despite this antagonistic relationship, Payne did not seek an outside law enforcement agency or special prosecutor to oversee the investigation or make charging decisions.” The embezzlement charge against Willett was dropped in September at the request of an independent prosecutor who was eventually appointed to the case. The judge at the time concluded the case lacked “any type of prosecutorial merit.”*** https://www.denverpost.com/2023/08/09/bob-willett-lawsuit-alonzo-payne-san-luis-valley-district-attorney/

Fraud, Bureaucracy, & Illegality
*** Enter the plea deal granted to Charles McGonigal, the rogue senior agent whose last assignment before retiring in 2018 was serving as the counterintelligence boss of the bureau's powerful New York Field Office. In a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, the disgraced McGonigal pleaded guilty to charges that he conspired to violate international sanctions on a notorious Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, and committed money laundering. Although these are serious charges and McGonigal faces up to five years in prison, nobody expects his sentence, which will be handed down towards the end of this year, to be that severe since he reached a plea deal with the Department of Justice, admitting his guilt. Nevertheless, the bureau’s image is severely tarnished here. Part of McGonigal’s job as a counterspy boss with the FBI was investigating Kremlin-connected Russian oligarchs, including Oleg Deripaska! The fact that McGonigal was also involved, at least to a degree, with the FBI’s infamous investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia in 2016, Operation CROSSFIRE HURRICANE, has led many Republicans to smell a rat. It looks like President Joe Biden’s Justice Department is giving McGonigal a pass to avoid unpleasant revelations about FBI dirty dealings which might emerge in any trial. The full story is even worse.*** The Balkan angle here is unpleasant and raises disturbing questions. As the New York Times put it gently this week, the accused "befriended the prime minister of Albania, Edi Rama, and used his position to drum up foreign business for his associates, according to the indictment filed against him in Washington. On one occasion, McGonigal opened an FBI investigation into a lobbyist for the Albanian prime minister’s main political rival." The truth, as The Examiner reported on multiple occasions , is considerably more troubling than that. In exchange for cash, McGonigal became the "heavy" for Rama and his Socialist government, threatening their political rivals and shaking down Albanian oligarchs for cash in exchange for protection from U.S. sanctions. This was a secret, mafia-like extortion ring run by a top FBI official, which netted tens of millions of dollars, according to multiple sources. Such underworld tactics are hardly unexpected since, during the decadelong rule of Rama and his Socialists, little Albania has become Europe’s epicenter for the global illegal narcotics trade, with the tacit support of the Biden State Department.*** https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-america/patriotism-unity/bidens-justice-department-is-burying-its-big-fbi-corruption-scandal

A pair of physical altercations in and around the campus of Howard University has prompted the Washington, D.C., school to issue new security protocols to protect students. The ramped-up security comes after a recent incident in which a group of Howard University students were assaulted by a roving group of teenagers who had been seen around different regions of the city engaging in illegal behavior. According to 7 News, at least one student was stabbed near the university dorms on Monday morning. The incident took place after another altercation near the campus that did not involve any students. During a town hall Tuesday, university president Wayne Frederick announced that the university would be implementing a strict ID check for residence halls and other buildings that are only open to students, faculty, and staff. The Kansas City Chiefs superfan known as “ChiefsAholic” was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly robbing a string of banks in the Midwest and allegedly laundering the stolen cash through casinos, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office for the Western District of Missouri. Xaviar Babudar, the man behind the popular social media handle, was arrested last month for an alleged robbery in Iowa last year. FBI investigators used bank records, casino transaction records and other "sensitive" financial information before discovering his cell phone was placed in cities where previously unsolved robberies took place, according to the statement.*** He was allegedly responsible for six robberies and two attempted robberies during a nine-month stretch between March and Dec. 2022. Authorities allege he stole more than $800,000 in total. He also allegedly purchased and redeemed more than $1 million in chips from various casinos in Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois between April and December 2022. Babudar gained fame by attending most Chiefs games dressed in a gray, masked wolf suit. Authorities allege he was able to finance his travel and attendance for these games through crime. In addition to the robberies, he allegedly gambled on the results of Chiefs games without reporting his winnings in Missouri or Kansas. He was initially arrested in Dec. 2022 in Bixby, Oklahoma, but later cut his ankle monitor and fled the state while out on bond after winning $100,000 on bets from an Illinois sportsbook, according to the statement.*** https://sports.yahoo.com/chiefs-superfan-chiefsaholic-indicted-on-19-charges-including-bank-robbery-money-laundering-162235146.html

Seattle is struggling with rampant drug use and deaths, but as of this week the City Council has effectively decriminalized the possession and public use of drugs. You can guess where this will lead.*** In June the City Council voted 5-4 against a bill that would list known possession and public drug use as a gross misdemeanor, and a stopgap measure for handling the drug crimes expired on Aug. 15 as the new law took effect. The City Council’s failure to act now makes Seattle “the only municipality in the State of Washington where it is legal to use hard drugs in public,” Ms. Davison said.*** This is progressive fantasy land. Last year there were 589 overdose deaths in Seattle, a 72% increase over 2021. Most involved fentanyl or meth. Good essay about Sackler family, Purdue Pharma, and Oxy deaths.
*** The area serviced by Purdue’s leading [sales rep] was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and when I got back to the Times, I did some research. It turned out that the DEA had just shut down one pill mill there operating as a pain clinic. When I went to Purdue’s headquarters, its three top executives all claimed to me in an interview they didn’t know anything unusual was happening in Myrtle Beach. But thanks to my source, I knew that wasn’t true. I spent several months doing more reporting and traveled to Myrtle Beach. There, shop owners in the same strip mall as the pain clinic described how hundreds of cars regularly waited in the parking lot for its doors to open. I interviewed patients at the clinic, including some now cut off from medication, and found that five people prescribed OxyContin there had died by overdose. Local pharmacists also told me how they repeatedly warned Purdue officials about what was happening and how those complaints were ignored. In late 2001, after that trip, I confronted Purdue executives with what I had found and asked them why they hadn’t responded to the situation in Myrtle Beach when their own sales data was flashing red. The company downplayed the chaos and a Purdue spokesman claimed, providing no evidence, that the huge demand for OxyContin in Myrtle Beach was coming from local retirees dealing with arthritis pain. ***

Need more evidence than a skull fracture?
On Tuesday, after a seven-day trial, the jury in Andy Ngo v. Rose City Antifa, et al. found two defendants not liable for assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress for their alleged attack on independent journalist Andy Ngo. The verdict sends a dangerous message to violent extremist groups: no one will stop you from your violent and wrongful activities. While this verdict is disappointing, Ngo won a settlement with one of the other defendants in the case and obtained default of three defendants who failed to show up for court. This is not the end of Ngo’s battle for justice after years of suffering at the hands of Antifa members, and it’s certainly not the end of Ngo’s brave reporting on the activities of this violent, extremist movement. This trial was riddled with intimidation by individuals believed to be associated with Antifa. Court proceedings were delayed and halted on multiple days due to threats of violence, and the jurors’ identities had to be sealed over serious concerns about external efforts to identify them. In fact, the defense’s attorney even declared she would “remember each one of their faces” shortly after declaring she was Antifa—in our opinion, an unambiguous threat to the jurors.**** https://libertycenter.org/andy-ngo-trial-update/
ANDY NGO: Well, it's actually before it was in her closing statements, she mentioned that resistance is not peaceful and that she was going to be getting a shirt that declares "I am Antifa" and that she is retiring and will remember all of the faces of the jurors. It was a very tense week with a near media blackout because of security incidents that kept happening. The jurors expressed to the court, who then expressed to the parties that they were really afraid for their safety because of repeated incidents that were happening both in and outside of the courtroom, courthouse. Before the deliberations, the court ordered that the identities of the jurors would be sealed because of apparent attempts to identify the identity of the jurors. So this was the context of the trial for the sudden days.*** ERIC SELL:*** the court did inform both parties of the day of deliberations that the jury was concerned that they were being threatened or potentially doxxed or there was going to be some kind of repercussions if the verdict did not come out the right way here. And we all know what that means. The right way is finding that both of these defendants were not liable, despite the extensive evidence here that they were involved in this attack against Andy, the jury still found that they weren't liable. So we can really see what's going on here with the interruptions of the trial, with all of the concerns that the jurors expressed to the court that this is not how our legal system is supposed to work. And there are some serious concerns about what happened in this particular proceeding.
ANDY NGO: Throughout the whole trial, my colleague was harassed and intimidated, both inside and outside of the courthouse. And I'm still trying to wrap my mind around what happened yesterday when the verdict was delivered. Reasons that are still unclear to me about really critical evidence regarding either the defendants destroying, hiding or at least not preserving communications with one another with other third parties during and around the time of the attacks, which the defendants admitted to during their depositions. But we couldn't present this to the jurors. And, you know, I always knew this would be a really uphill battle. These attacks happened in Portland through the criminal justice system. I didn't receive justice. And I really hoped it was through this that Portland jurors clearly could see. https://www.foxnews.com/media/andy-ngo-speaks-out-losing-civil-suit-against-rose-city-antifa-didnt-receive-justice

One way to get a great plea deal - threaten POTUS
It was Halloween of 2022, and Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Chris Clark, didn’t sound happy. Just three weeks earlier, news had leaked that federal agents believed they had enough evidence to charge his client with illegally buying a gun as a drug user. The leak was “illegal,” the lawyer wrote to the U.S. attorney overseeing the probe. The prosecution, he argued, would be seen as purely political, and it might even violate the Second Amendment. Then he issued a warning: If the Justice Department charged the president’s son, his lawyers would put the president on the witness stand. “President Biden now unquestionably would be a fact witness for the defense in any criminal trial,” Clark wrote in a 32-page letter reviewed by POLITICO. That letter, along with more than 300 pages of previously unreported emails and documents exchanged between Hunter Biden’s legal team and prosecutors, sheds new light on the fraught negotiations that nearly produced a broad plea deal. That deal would have resolved Biden’s most pressing legal issues — the gun purchase and his failure to pay taxes for several years — and it also could have helped insulate Biden from future prosecution by a Republican-led Justice Department.*** https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/19/hunter-biden-plea-deal-collapse-00111974

(WNDU) - The customer who shot the suspect in an attempted armed robbery at a gas station in Cassopolis last month will not be charged, according to prosecutors.*** The incident happened back on the night of July 27 at the Stone Lake Marathon Gas Station in the 200 block of S. Broadway Street. When officers arrived, they found a male who had been shot several times and another male holding him at gun point. According to police, the man who had been shot tried to rob the store’s clerk but was shot by a customer who had a valid Michigan Concealed Pistol License and had previous experience working as a security guard. The suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries and was charged the following day (details below). An investigation into the armed robbery and shooting was then launched by prosecutors and police, which officials say is protocol whenever someone is shot. After reviewing witness/victim statements, as well as in-store video, officer body cameras, photographs, and other physical evidence, the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the customer’s actions were lawful and justified in terms of self-defense and the defense of others. Therefore, no charges will be filed against him.*** https://www.wndu.com/2023/08/22/prosecutors-customer-who-shot-suspect-during-attempted-robbery-cassopolis-was-justified/

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia returned an indictment today charging a former FBI contractor with sexual exploitation of children. According to court documents, Brett Janes, 26, of Arlington, Virginia, allegedly contacted roughly a dozen minor boys over Discord and Snapchat. He allegedly groomed the minors by telling them he worked for a U.S. intelligence agency before repeatedly threatening suicide if the minors did not continue to communicate with him. Janes allegedly enticed one victim, a 13-year-old boy whom he met through the first-person shooter game Valorant, to strip and masturbate over a live video Discord call by threatening to kill himself and by paying him money over CashApp. He allegedly enticed a 12-year-old boy to create and send him child sexual abuse material (CSAM) over Discord through flattery and repeated begging. Janes allegedly received child sexual abuse material from these two minors, as well as two separate minor victims, and attempted to meet up with a minor. He also allegedly purchased hundreds of videos and images of child sexual abuse material from Telegram.*** An indictment is merely an allegation. Can AI be a threat if it can't remember a defendant's release date?
A lawsuit with claims of unlawful arrests and detainments blamed on flaws in a new $100 million electronic court filing system is moving ahead as officials prepare to expand the program. Defendants in a class action lawsuit targeting the software company Tyler Technologies were served this week and now have 30 days to respond to allegations a pilot transition to the eCourts system in four counties is violating people’s constitutional rights. The latest development in the eCourts rollout comes as court officials prepare to add Mecklenburg County to the system in October. The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts launched the eCourts transition from paper to digital records in February in Harnett, Johnston, Lee and Wake counties. It immediately faced complaints of glitches in the system, outages, delays and limited access to court records. The issues, which have persisted for months, led to longer than necessary court appearances for routine requests, delayed protection orders and allegations of wrongful arrests, and delayed jail releases stemming from the complications, attorneys have told The Center Square.***

Western August I: Stagecoach (1939) - Recap and Review
Let’s start at the beginning...almost,
The Western arguably was born with the 1903 film, The Great Train Robbery. This 12-minute short film is a classic, and one of the earliest achievements in film-making. It’s also, unsurprisingly, a Western, and based on an actual train robbery. At the time it was made, the Wild West had only really ended a few years prior, with its heyday being about 40 years past. Which, yeah, is CRAZY. People who remembered the Wild West lived into the 1950s and ‘60s. It seems like so long ago, and it was, but it was still relatively recent from a historical standpoint.
From then, the Western remained a staple of cinema, and would be so for over half a century. And then, enter John Ford. Born in 1894, the Irish American director began his career in 1914 as an assistant and handyman, often working with his older brother Francis. Eventually, John took his place as a director, starting with silent films, especially westerns. Starting with the very successful film The Iron Horse in 1924, he quickly rose to stardom. He transitioned from silent films to talkies pretty effortlessly, and continued his streak. All the while, he was also one of the first directors to have a roster of actors in his company. You know how Tim Burton always uses Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter? Or how the Coen Brothers always use Frances McDormand and John Goodman? Or Wes Andersen with Bill Murray and Owen Wilson? Yeah, that started with John Ford and...ugh...
Before I start...fuck John Wayne.
Dude was a racist homophobic asshole, and absolutely a dick. Look it up, or don’t if you’d rather not have one of cinemas most iconic faces completely ruined for you. But OK, outside of that one time that he said that the Native Americans were “selfishly trying to keep the land for themselves”, or that he believed in white supremacy over uneducated blacks...yeah, he’s a DICK...
Marion Robert Morrison was born in Iowa in 1907, and began his film career after becoming injured while surfing without a surfboard and ending his football career. Yes, really. His football coach was a friend of a film director named John Ford, who hired Morrison as a favor to him. Said football coach was also friends with an actual remnant of the Old West: WYATT FUCKING EARP. YEAH.
For years, Morrison was a bit player until starring in the film The Big Trail in 1930, a Western directed by Raoul Walsh. And he wasn’t exactly famous after this, but it was with this film that he took up a screen name: John Wayne, after a Revolutionary War general, Anthony Wayne, and...well, the name John. Anthony sounded too Italian. Yes, really. After this movie, Wayne continued to star in more Westerns, and even became one of the first film cowboys to sing on camera.
And then, 1939 came along, and John Ford came to him with a new film project. Being a classic Western, the film was about a group of settlers riding on a stagecoach together through the West. Strangers to each other, they find themselves attacked by a group of Native Americans belonging to the Apache tribes. This film, an adaptation of a 1939 short story, would come to be known as Stagecoach. And it would launch Ford, Wayne, and the Western genre into a Golden Age. So no more navel-gazing, let’s get started!
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
I get reminded that I haven’t watched a Criterion Collection film in a while, and the film begins with a rousing Western theme, courtesy of...holy shit, this movie has SEVEN COMPOSERS? Well, OK, courtesy of somebody in that list of seven. From there, we cut to a camp somewhere in the Arizona Territory in 1880. Which, again, is only 60 years prior to this film’s release date. There, a group of men discuss the danger imposed on them by the Apache, stirred up by the legendary warrior Geronimo.
And from there, we go to the town of Tonto, where stagecoach driver Buck (Andy Devine) lets a group of passengers out. One of these passengers is Lucy Mallory (Louise Platt), there to catch another shuttle to meet her husband in Dry Fork, New Mexico. However, the stagecoach gains an extra passenger in the form of the Marshal, Curley Wilcox (George Bancroft), who goes to find an outlaw also in Lordsburg.
The passenger list builds with the addition of Doc Boone (Thomas Mitchell) and Dallas (Claire Trevor), a drunk and a prostitute both driven out of town by the Law and Order League of Women, due to social stigma affecting them both. In a bar getting a farewell drink, Doc meets yet one more passenger, Samuel Peacock (Donald Meek), a whiskey salesman that Doc is glad to meet. Meanwhile, banker Henry Gatewood (Berton Churchill) also boards the vehicle, under mysterious circumstances.
Friends of Lucy are worried with her travelling a drunk and a prostitute (the ABSOLUTE SCANDAL), but she needs to visit her husband in Dry Fork. As she leaves, she meets eyes with the dangerous but enigmatic gambler Hatfield (John Carradine). And before they’re able to leave altogether, the carriage is stopped by the army, who warn them of the Apache and Geronimo. All of the passengers refuse to get off, and YET TWO MORE passengers board to protect the carriage: the Marshal and Hatfield. And finally, they’re off! But as they head out, they’re stopped when they encounter a recently escaped outlaw.
This is The Ringo Kid (John Wayne), who just got out of prison. The Marshal sees him, and takes him into custody on the way to Lordsburg, where they plan to drop him off into jail. And yes, he’s put on the fucking stagecoach. In total, we have Buck, the Marshal, Lucy, Hatfield, Doc, Peacock, Gatewood, and the Ringo Kid. Jesus, that’s a crowded-ass carriage, even if two of them are outside of it. Hell, Ringo’s sitting on the fuckin’ floor!
Anyway, the group interacts and introduces themselves. We learn that Doc once patched up Ringo’s brother, and was discharged from the Union Army for drunkenness. We learn that Hatfield is a true southern gentleman, and a veteran of the Confederate army (much to Doc’s ire), and that Ringo’s brother was murdered under mysterious circumstances.
The group gets to Dry Forks, currently under occupation by the army. Said army had accompanied them (outside of the carriage, thank God) to Dry Forks, and are staying there to guard against the Apache. Meanwhile, Lucy’s dismayed to find that her husband isn’t in fact there. This leads to the debate of whether or not the party should go back to Tonto, or head onwards to Lordsburg. Buck wants to go back to Tonto, as does Peacock, while literally everybody else wants to go to Lordsburg. And so, they continue onwards.
Before heading onwards, the group sits for dinner, during which Ringo is the only one to show any form of kindness to Dallas, as everybody else looks down on her for prostitution. Shit, man, they won’t even sit near her at the table. Jesus. Unfortunately, Dallas is used to this cruel treatment, and it allows her to bond with Ringo in her loneliness. Once again, character interactions reveal things about our cast. Lucy is feeling quite ill, and Hatfield reveals that he served under her father in the Confederate Army.
And from there, the coach continues on through the desert. Buck and the Marshal argue about letting Ringo free, as he aims to continue his feud with the outlaw Luke Plummer and his brothers, despite the fact that he’ll likely be killed by them. It’s for this reason that the Marshal wants to keep Ringo in his custody, as he was good friends with his father and doesn’t want to see him killed by the dangerous Plummers, whom Buck thinks should be taken down regardless.
Inside the coach, the banker reveals that he’s literally a Republican from 2016 (he rants about small government, and claims that a businessman should be President, holy shit), while people keep treating Dallas like shit, except for Ringo. They go through a cold mountain pass, which isn’t great for Lucy for some reason. It’s actually quite rough on everyone. Except for Doc Boone, who keeps drinking Peacock’s whiskey samples, which is hilarious.
Finally, the group makes it to the next stop, Apache Wells. There, Lucy discovers that her husband has been severely wounded in a battle with the Apache, and she falls faint. Despite being absolutely SMASHED, Doc sobers up to help her, with the help of Ringo and the Marshal. Meanwhile, Dallas watches over her, despite the rancor that Lucy’s tossed at her this whole time.
The group stays the night, attended to by Chris (Chris Pin-Martin) a Mexican man who’s married to Yakima (Elvira Rios), an Apache woman who...is played by a Mexican singer. Huh. I mean...it’s still technically redface, unfortunately. But then again, the attitude towards Native American actors at this time was...oh boy. And the portrayal of the Mexicans in the camp aren’t exactly great, as a group of them steal the group’s spare horses, meaning that they only have one set of horses to use from here on out.
But amongst the unpleasant is a pleasant surprise, and the reveal of the cause for Lucy’s mysterious condition: she’s pregnant. Or rather, she was, as the baby’s just been delivered, and is being held by Dallas. As the group celebrates, Chris warns Ringo to stay away from Lordsburg, as the Plummers will kill him. But Ringo has something else on his mind.
See, on seeing Dallas with the baby, he finds himself quite in love with her. He finds her outside, and tells her that his father and brothers were killed by the Plummers. In turn, she reveals that her family was massacred on the real-life Superstition Mountain. Their conversation ends in Ringo proposing to Dallas, which she protests to because of her mysterious past.
The next morning, Yakima’s left with Chris’ horse and rifle, and the group worry that she’s gone to tell the Apache. After Gatewood panics about his mysterious valise being possibly stolen, the group packs up and readies themselves to go. But Lucy is, of course, still ill from literally giving birth hours ago. Things are still tense between Lucy and Dallas, despite Dallas taking care of her the entire fucking night. Jesus, lady, that high horse is looking uncomfortable, you should get off it.
Dallas has something else to worry about, as she’s thinking on Ringo’s proposal. She consults with the doctor, who reminds her of her mysterious and checkered past being revealed if she goes. But she doesn’t seem to care, and she decides to accept the proposal. As for the rest, Gatewood’s freakin’ the fuck out. Because of Lucy’s condition, the doctor requests that they don’t leave until a day later. And Gatewood doesn’t give a single shit, as the Apache are close enough. Still, the party decides to stay, at Hatfield’s added insistence.
Ringo and Dallas talk, with Dallas both warning him of the Plummers, and also accepting his proposal. The men are all still arguing about whether or not they should leave, and they note that the Apache are likely between them and their destination. Ringo then takes the opportunity to escape and ride to Lordsburg for revenge on the Plummers. But he stops when he sees smoke signals on the hill. The Apache are coming.
No more waiting, it’s time to GO. Taking the still recovering lady and her newborn child Coyote into the stagecoach, they take off into the desert. Gatewood continues to run his loudmouth, to the ire of Hatfield and Ringo. And Peacock, to my delight, shows some kindness and “Christian charity” to Dallas, as she holds Coyote during the ride. And after all, they’re almost at the ferry!
Ah, shit, the ferry! Looks like the ferry, and the entire town of Lee’s Ferry have been burned. And if they ford the river, all of their supplies could be flooded, or the oxen could drown! Or worse, dysentery could set in! That’s what The Oregon Trail taught me! And yet, despite this, that’s actually EXACTLY what they do! And unlike me literally every time I’ve every tried to cross a river without a ferry, they make it through fine! Realistic educational games my ASS!
But it’s not entirely safe, as the group are being watched by none other than the Apache, who make their way down to intercept the group. In the carriage, meanwhile, the group is thankful that they’ve made their way from danger, and even Gatewood relaxes a little. Doc Boone makes a toast, and everyone seems to be getting along for once.
OH FUCK, PEACOCK GOT HIT!
The girlfriend IMMEDIATELY SAYS, “Now he really is Drew Peacock.” I leave and get boba to soothe my injured spirit from that well-timed joke. And then, the movie continues, and the chase is on! The Apache chase the stagecoach through the desert, and the groups trade gunshots and arrows, with Ringo shooting from the back. Gatewood panics so hard that Doc Boone punches him and IMMEDIATELY knocks him out, as he attends to Peacock’s injuries.
But despite their best efforts, the Apache group catches up to them, although many of them are killed by Ringo, the Marshal, Doc, and Hatfield. In the process, Buck is also shot, and Ringo literally jumps ON THE FUCKING HORSES, and commands them from the front like a goddamn badass. Things begin to get worse, as everybody in the stagecoach runs out of ammo, at the worst possible time. Hatfield only has one bullet remaining, and he considers using it...to kill Lucy! Holy fuck!
And just as he’s about to fire IN HER FUCKING FACE, the sounds of horns ring out as the cavalry arrives. And Hatfield, dick that he is, is shot. I think he was trying to spare her the indignity of being captured by the Apache, but Jesus, man! He collapses, and reveals that his father is a judge in Virginia before he...either passes out or dies, I’m not sure. The group finally gets to Lordsburg, where it turns out that Lucy’s husband is gonna be OK, and wasn’t severely injured. She tanks Dallas for everything that she’s done, and promises to help her should she ever need assistance. Good, finally, the lady needs a goddamn break.
The stagecoach rides through the busy town, and the arrival of the Ringo Kid gets the attention of Luke Plummer (Tom Tyler), who fetches his brothers Hank (Vester Pegg) and Ike (Joe Rickson). Time to get ready for a showdown, it seems. Dallas seems to know this, and goes to Ringo after the living Peacock (yay!) and the not-so-living Hatfield (oof) are brought in for medical help.
Buck’s also OK, but Gatewood isn’t. See, that valise he was carrying was actually full of money, and he had embezzled it from his own bank. He had counted on telegraph lines being down, so that he could escape with his ill-gotten gains, but has no such luck, and is led away in handcuffs! HA!
Ringo, meanwhile, is set to kill Luke Plummer and his brothers. The Marshal lets him escape, and promises to get Dallas safely down to a little ranch he owns in the South. Dallas and Ringo walk off together, and Dallas tries to get him to leave and say goodbye before he goes to his death, and before he finds out about her past (presumably as a prostitute).
See, they’re actually walking up to a brothel, where Dallas is going to stay and work. Because, yeah, she’s a prostitute. Sucks that she’s been so maligned, because prostitution fuckin’ BUILT the Old West! I guess it’s easier to see that with historical context. As Ringo finds out the truth about Dallas (which he might’ve known all along), he still insists upon marrying her...and upon killing the Plummers.
Doc, meanwhile, goes to the bar where the Plummers are waiting. He tells them that he’ll get them arrested, and Luke swears to come back for him after their business with Ringo is concluded. The brothers head outside, ready for the final showdown. It’s 3 on one, Plummers against Ringo. Ringo fires! A few more shots...then silence. And Dallas mourns.
Except that Ringo wins the fight, and goes back to her! A happy ending! I’m sure that’ll be pretty goddamn rare this month. The Marshal arrives to take Ringo away, and Ringo goes as promised. She asks to ride with him a bit, and the Marshal agrees. He and Doc watch them get on, then cause the horses of the carriage to stampede away, letting Ringo and Dallas escape into the desert, together. And that’s the end!
Y’know...I liked it! I really liked it!
This movie is often referred to as the greatest Western of all time, and the reason that the Western survived into the next several decades. And honestly, I get it! It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, and won for Best Supporting Actor (Thomas Mitchell, AKA Doc) and Best Original Score, both of which were quite deserved!
Review time!
Cast and Acting - 9/10: Sure, it’s a little hokey. But at the same time, it’s good classic Hollywood acting! Wayne, Trevor, Mitchell, Carradine, and Devine are standouts for me, all of which serving their roles well. Also, fun fact about Andy Devine: he’s the voice of Friar Tuck in Disney’s Robin Hood! KNEW I recognized that voice!
Plot and Writing - 10/10: Standard plot? Sure. Engaging as hell? Hell yeah! This is just a good story, plain and simple. No holes, no problems, no mistakes, and purely straightforward. Great writing by the original story author, Ernest Haycox, and great screenplay by Dudley Nichols!
Directing and Cinematography - 10/10: Great looking movie, too! All credit to John Ford, unsurprisingly. Cinematographer Bert Glennon also deserves credit for the beautiful landscape shots throughout. Gogeous film, even in black-and-white!
Production and Art Design - 8/10: This is pretty standard Western production design, so not a lot to write home about specifically. However, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. To the contrary, it’s quite good! Just does stand out to me quite as much as other movies. Might be a nitpick, but it’s still something against the film.
Music and Editing - 10/10: No complaints! Seven composers definitely make their presence known, and you can tell that this score heavily informed all Western scores after it. It’s iconic, and it’s perfect for the mood. As for the editing by Otho Lovering and Dorothy Spencer...it’s great! Perfect pacing, well-edited...no complaints whatsoever.
94%, and I had fun with this one!
I honestly did have quite a good time with this one. I can’t really call it a “fun” movie, but it definitely is a good one. Plus, it’s a John Ford/John Wayne film, which is basically a staple of the genre. So, what’s next?
Next: My Darling Clementine (1946), dir. John Ford

Sound Bites’ Favorite Albums of 2020
- In a bleak year, music comes through
The year 2020 didn’t leave much to celebrate - unless pandemics, racism and the crumbling of American democracy are your things.
For all the bad - and there was a ton of bad - there was also a ton of good music. What follows are capsule reviews of Sound Bites’ favorite studio releases of his least-favorite year; read the contemporary pieces in the blue links.
The Wood Brothers - Kingdom in My Mind
Born from jams, authorship of the 10 tracks - plus a short reprise - is credited to guitarist Oliver Wood, bassist/harmonica player Chris Wood and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix. Taken as a whole, the 38-minute LP - the band’s best to date - is full of lively numbers even as the trio spends an inordinate time singing about dying on cuts such as “Little Bit Sweet,” “Don't Think about My Death” and “Satisfied.”
David Bromberg Band - Big Road
If eclecticism equaled commercialism, David Bromberg would be one of America’s biggest artists. But it doesn’t and he isn’t. And instead, Americana’s best-kept, 50-year-old secret keeps the quality high with Big Road.
Gospel, rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass and country are represented and Bromberg sings it all like Willie Nelson with a baritone - sporting the same quaver, the same emotional breaks in his voice and the same conviction.
Sarah Jarosz - World on the Ground
These are songs about “Eve,” who wants to ensure the world doesn’t spoil her inner goodness; “Johnny,” who just needs a bit of luck, love and light; and “Maggie” whose Ford Escape will hopefully live up to its name. Sarah Jarosz’s subjects - and sometimes Jarosz herself - drink cold coffee and wine; they want to stay and they want to leave; and they wonder why they left or why they stayed. Whether working with I’m With Her or on her own, Jarosz is among the best working these days.
Tyler Childers - Long Violent History
Nothing about Tyler Childers’ Long Violent History should work. Yet everything does. It’s a statement LP, yet it's mostly instrumental. It finds Childers standing with Black Lives Matter against a backdrop of old-timey fiddle music. And it opens with a creepy rendering of “Send in the Clowns.”
Childers, who plays fiddle exclusively, is joined by a band that includes Mandolin Orange’s Andrew Marlin on mandolin and Josh Oliver on guitar; fiddler Jesse Wells; and Dom Flemons on virtually everything else including banjo, bones, quills, jug, bass drum and harmonica. Together, they burn through seven additional trad tunes such as the mournful waltz of “Midnight on the Water” and the celebratory high step of “Sludge River Stop,” before Childers makes his point on the title track.
Tim Heidecker - Fear of Death
On Fear of Death, Tim Heidecker flips the script.
No longer simply a comedian who happens to make music, Tim Heidecker, on his fifth solo LP since 2016, proves himself a fully fledged musician who happens to be funny in the intelligent way Procol Harum and Crash Test Dummies are funny. Musically derivative, Fear of Death derives wisely from the Mamas & the Papas, the Byrds, Widespread Panic and others; special shout out to Weyes Blood, whose harmony and co-lead vocals add immeasurably to the proceedings.
Steve Earle & the Dukes - Ghosts of West Virginia
Steve Earle’s emotions are raw on the entirety of Ghosts of West Virginia, on which he and the Dukes tell the story the Upper Branch Mine disaster and the Mountaineer State’s coal-mining history with bluegrass on “Union, God and Country;” miners’ fates on the hard country of “Black Lung;” a widow’s side of the story on the heart-wrenching, “If I Could See Your Face Again;” and bring native son Chuck Yeager into the mix on the hard-stompin’ rockabilly of “Fastest Man Alive.”
Robby Krieger - The Ritual Begins at Sundown
After 10 years of studio silence, Robby Krieger returns with a killer Frank Zappa album. OK, the Ritual Begins at Sundown is a Krieger album masquerading as a Zappa album. But it’s killer, indeed.
Fine-tuned on stages before being transferred to the studio, the eight originals and two covers bear all sorts of Zappa hallmarks like odd time signatures, quirky tempo shifts and an overarching, unconventional quality that keep them interesting over repeated spins.
Willie Nelson - First Rose of Spring
A melancholic collection of 11 numbers, Willie Nelson’s First Rose of Spring covers country themes like death (“Stealing Time” and the title track, a sequel to “He Stopped Loving Her Today”), doing crimes (Johnny Paycheck’s “I’m the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised”) and doing time (Merle Haggard’s “I’ll Break Out Again Tonight”).
Ben Harper - Winter is for Lovers
Through the pieces have titles and demarcation between them, Ben Harper’s all-instrumental, lap-steel-only Winter is for Lovers is essentially a 30-minute suite to be taken in totality. Sparse though it may be, it never lags and is a fulfilling listen in any number of settings.
Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile feat. Aoife O’Donovan - Not Our First Goat Rodeo
No one player dominates the mostly instrumental proceedings as the quartet of Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile - with appearances from vocalist Aoife O’Donovan - works together to create long-bowed, deep grooves on “Every Note a Pearl,” which seems a good thematic statement for the supergroup’s second Goat Rodeo. Every one of these musicians is a certified genius, which means the music is occasionally too complicated for its own good. But those moments are few on the 45-minute recording and Not Our First Goat Rodeo will leave the listener hoping a decade doesn’t pass before this quintet gets back on the horse again.
Honorable mentions
Chris Smither - More from the Levee
Recorded in 2013, including a slew of reimagined pieces from his songbook and featuring appearances from Alan Toussaint, Louden Wainwright III and Morphine drummer Billy Conway, More from the Levee is vintage Chris Smither, literally and figuratively.
Jeremy Spencer - Live in the Studio
Spencer’s fourth album of 2020 was actually recorded in 2005 and finds the former Fleetwood Mac axeman playing the blues for which he is best known as opposed to the languid, mostly instrumental atmospherics that characterized his most-recent LPs. Star Wars Ramblings #2 - The Princess Diarist
When the book came out in 2016 it was on my radar but having never seen the Star Wars films I didn’t feel particularly compelled to pick it up then. After absolutely falling in love with the films however, this book shot straight to the top of my TBR. Reading it now, after her death, added such a different, heartbreaking perspective to this book, particularly in the final chapters.
The book is split into three sections. Both the first and last sections were written at the time of the book’s release while the middle section is a series of excerpts from a diary Carrie kept while filming A New Hope. What I particularly loved about this book was that, throughout, it had me forming thoughts/questions/opinions which would vary so greatly from one chapter to the next. It was also written with such beautiful style. It had me laughing out loud at point and tearing up at others - it really did have an emotional grip on me.
Yes the book does have a heavy focus on the affair between Carrie and her co-star Harrison Ford. I had read reviews online before picking this book up where people weren’t super happy with the way in which this book took this direction however this was naturally a significant event for a her and what 19 year old doesn’t spend time musing about the guy she has a crush on? Before picking up the book I knew absolutely next to nothing about the situation/circumstances surrounding their affair. My brain was constantly at war with itself over how I felt about it. I think I speak for a lot of fans of movies/TV shows when I say that you always wish that there was more for your favourite on-screen couples, other than what the audience are shown, but writing such as this does require you to try and remove that vision from your mind. I think it is the way in which Carrie writes about the affair that caused my opinon to flip and flop so much. Carrie’s writing style is extraordinary. When writing in 2016, the pages are full of such wit and charm and there were passages that did make me very much smile in an odd sort of way. The humour that was laced into the descriptions of their time together played right into the hands of any Star Wars fan with references to ‘cinematic snogs’ and the making of sequels ‘with her future cinematic husband’. There are also brief insights into their interractions on set where she describes ‘ducking down’ her ’bun-encased head’ or ‘grazing a powdered forehead to his smuggler’s jacket’ which are likely to warm the hearts of many who view Han and Leia as their one true pairing.
The charm with which she writes however in no way detracts from the situation at hand. This book is filled with such brutal truth and honesty and this is particularly evident when reading the diary excerpts in the middle of the book. At times these defintely made for uncomfortable reading. Any way in which your heart might have been lifted slightly in previous sections through her comparisons to Han and Leia are totally shattered here. These passages are both so raw and painful in parts. Knowing the difficulty she faced in trying to escape her own thoughts and mind and knowing that the pages of this diary were the only outpouring for this made you really feel for her. She was a young girl who, through age and inexperience, had gotten in over her head. It is incredibly difficult not to resent Harrison, in this section, for not reciprocating these feelings she had developed for him. If I had read only this section of the book I would have definitely settled upon a very negative view of their affair.
The unsettling nature of this book however did not end there. What caused a lot of my emotional attachment was the opening few chapters. Here she described a number of uncomfortable situations she had found herself in, within the film industry, prior to the filming of Star Wars. This made me absolutely loathe what I knew would be coming later in the book re the affair. I was honestly livid at the thought of the potential situations that would play out later in the book between herself and Harrison but what I had to stop and tell myself was that we were being offered an insight into her past that he may have potentially not been afforded. I instead decided to try and reserve all judgement on the situation until I had amassed all of the facts. How can you blame someone for being unaware of situations they potentially knew very little about?
I am unfortunately aware that off-screen affairs were much more prevalent at this time. This is highlighted particularly in an extremely uncomfortable anecdote in which Carrie describes being at a party held for director, George Lucas, in which a number of male members of the film crew attempt to take advantage of her after supplying her with alcohol. They are not however the only ones that appear to have their sights set on her. Aware of the situation, Harrison steps in, only to make his own move on her very soon after in the back of a taxi. It is this move which kickstarted their months long affair.
Bringing you back into the present however Carrie does an excellent job of putting the entire situation into perspective. It was in the section, entitled ’40 years on’ that put to rest the two waring sides of my brain. Carrie describes their affair as ‘a brief thrilling liaison that I would eventually camly walk away from smiling and sophisticated’. This quote was one that comforted me most to read. Of course, there are few hard feelings between them now but this quote was also incredibly reassuring to know that, yes, this affair happened but it by no means completely destroyed any friendships/relationships that had been built up between the pair.
This may be controversial but I believe that their affair may have served to enhance their portrayal of their characters on screen. Not only in the physical sense but in the emotional sense too. At the start of the book Harrison is described as being rather quiet and withdrawn towards Carrie until he is involved in ‘saving her’ from the situation at the party. By this later section he is described as being incredibly decent. This memoir isn’t one, I believe of good and bad guys. Although heavily focused on the affair I think it is told in a way that almost makes it feel like a story. It far from feels like it is being told in a way that resembled whispered gossip, trying to inflict blame on one party or another. Carrie certainly doesn’t resent Harrison over what happened and even asks readers to try and feel sorry for him.
I do believe that the story of their relationship is a little tragic and we will all be left to wonder if this had happened in a different place, time and under different circumstances would something have come of it? Or maybe would it have not counted ‘all that much’ she writes ‘because of how short I am’.

2016 Ford Escape Review
2016 Ford Escape, another infotainment framework with touch screen called “Synchronize 3” replaces the greatly condemned My Ford Touch, while the standard sound framework loses its helper input.
SUVs minimized hybrids are extraordinary for some things, whether getting the chance to work, taking their children to class, stacking the products from Costco or going on a ski trip. They regularly need, in any case, is a sentiment fun. For that, you’ll need to look at 2016 The Ford Escape.
In light of Ford’s concentration call, the present fumes circles like a tiptoe concentration (which is a compliment) and, when outfitted with the 2.0 turbo motor Liters, it is one of only a handful couple of speedier hybrids in this value extend.
Also, the Escape hybrid wins its stripes with the drive alternative, reasonable efficiency holds every single roomy haggle raise entryway of the without hands control sensor accessible with super icy feet.

2016 Ford Escape Pictures
One of our couple of issues with the present era Escape has been the refined operation of its infotainment framework choice My Ford Touch, worked with Microsoft’s know-how, yet tormented with issues since the introduction of the Ease of utilization.
Luckily, 2016 escape gets a fresh start with the presentation of the Sync 3 BlackBerry controlled framework, which has quicker reaction times and a rearranged menu that shows up as a strip at the base of the focal touch screen.
Match up 3 likewise highlights natural squeeze and-swipe components, for example, a cell phone, while the rich element My Ford Touch Excellence. In light of our early introductions, it is a genuine stride forward.
Whether you settle on Sync 3, the Escape will treat one of the best taxicabs in the minimal hybrid section, highlighted by quality materials and liberal standard components like a back view camera, USB network and controls Voice truly valuable.
All things considered, we are not in adoration with the standard infotainment framework, comprising of a focal screen of 4.2-inch unassuming and twin banks so on capacity keys orchestrated in V-molded does not make a difference; Once you achieve the street, you will rapidly see that the Escape is to a great degree charming to drive. Deft, refined, imparts certainty level driver that is very uncommon in this class.
2016 Ford Escape Inside outline and one of a kind capacities
Standard elements on the S incorporate 17-inch steel wheels, worked in blind side mirror, My Key parental control, full power adornments, keyless section, voyage control, aerating and cooling, tilt and adaptive directing wheel, control guiding Adjustable tallness a collapsing and leaning back seat 60/40, a focal screen of 4.2 inches, a back view camera, electronic interface with voice charges Sync AppLink cell phone mix, Bluetooth telephone and sound and framework availability Its six speakers with CD player and a USB port.
The turbocharged 1.6-liter, programmed headlights, haze lights, keyless passage keypad, raise glass security, movable driver situate tallness eight-path (with lumbar support), enhanced manufactured cowhide, a focal armrest Rear and satellite radio.
The SE Convenience Package highlights Rear Parking Roof Rails sensors, double zone programmed atmosphere control, 110-volt yield Sync 3-style home style interface (counting an 8-inch touchscreen) and a nine-Speakers with two USB ports. SE Comfort Package offers warmed calfskin mirrors, cowhide upholstery and warmed front seats.
You can get situates and warmed mirrors and in addition a windscreen wiper with the icy climate bundle. A power liftgate are likewise accessible (requires SE Convenience Package), 18-inch haggles begin.
At the highest point of the line, the Titanium joins the SE bundles and choices said above with a selective standing sensor for electric back end, keyless passage and begin, inside lighting, eight-way flexible traveler situate (with bolster Lumbar driver, memory settings driver, auto diminishing rearview mirror and sound framework with 10 Sony HD radio speakers.
Titanium choices incorporate an arrangement of innovations (xenon headlights, blind side observing, raise cautioning of transverse activity, programmed windscreen wipers and programmed stopping) and 19-inch composite wheels.
2016 Ford Escape Driving Impressions
2016 The Ford Escape offers no under three motors, with accessibility relying upon the trim. A six-speed programmed transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) are standard all through the board, while all backups, however the S are accessible with all-wheel drive (AWD).
A four-barrel 2.5-liter with 168 strength and 170 lb-ft of torque is standard on the S and a choice to cut expenses in the SE. AWD is not accessible with this motor. The evaluated mileage is 25 mpg joined (22 city/31 street).
The SE and Titanium are conveyed as standard with a 1.6-liter four-barrel turbocharged that makes 178 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. In the test a FWD 1.6 escape rating ascended from zero to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds, which is somewhat quicker than the normal for a little hybrid with the base motor.
Efficiency with the 1.6 is at 26 mpg consolidated (23 city/32 street) with FWD, tumbling to 25 mpg joined (22 city/29 course) with all-wheel drive.
Discretionary on the SE and Titanium is a 2.0-liter four-chamber turbocharged motor that pumps 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. In the test, a 2.0 AWD release quickened to 60 mph in a quick 7.0 seconds. Rates 25 joined efficiency (22 city/interstate 30) with front wheel drive and 23 mpg consolidated (21 city/28 street) mpg with AWD.
2016 Ford Escape Engines and Performance
Electronically monitored slowing mechanism plates, footing and strength control, side airbags in the front seats, driver’s knee airbag and side drapery airbags are standard full length 2016 Ford Escape. Portage MyKey (which permits proprietors to set up electronic parameters for youthful drivers), a rearview camera and visually impaired mirrors are likewise standard.
A ready framework cautions the blind side with cross-fringe movement is discretionary on the titanium bundle through the innovation.
In government tests, the Escape has accomplished a general rating of four stars (out of a most extreme of five), with four stars for the general effect of frontal crash assurance and five stars for general side effect security. The Road Safety Insurance Institute gave the most noteworthy “great” Escape score in its effect frontal crash test, parallel impact and direct cover rooftop.
The seat outline and the Escape headrest is likewise appraised “Great” for rabbit blow assurance in case of a back effect, yet got the most reduced rating of “fair” in the little cover shutting test Frontal balance.
Inside the 2016 Ford Escape you will discover a considerable measure of materials delicate to the touch and fit and the general complete amazing, in spite of the fact that there is significantly more storage room for individual things than you may anticipate.
The front seats are very much shaped and liberally cushioned, while the gages are extensive and simple to peruse. A few controls are somewhat hard to utilize. You should reach down to discover the atmosphere control board and the standard sound interface disappoints with the screen and catches of its little ocean like appearance.
A great deal all the more fulfilling is the new Sync 3 framework that replaces the My Ford Touch interface a year ago, Quicker, less demanding to utilize and graphically rich, without a hint of the quadrant game plan in view of the old framework, Sync 3 is practically all that we fancy its antecedent can be.
In spite of the smaller appearance Escape, it is very extensive behind the front seats. Despite the fact that the leaning back seat is not as extensive as a few opponents, giving grown-up travelers plentiful space to legroom and a lot of headroom.
On the front wearing load region measures 34.3 cubic feet focused, and square-off rooftop line permits massive things or expansive mutts to fit effectively. Move the back seats down through the one-touch advantageous lever opens 68.1 cubic meters of space, a palatable number for the section.
The sans hands hatchback is an intriguing component, which opens with a ruler under the back guard (if you have the key some place you), yet you can just have it in the event that you select the costly cut of titanium.
2016 Ford Escape Body styles, levels and finish elective
With its quick, precise guiding and moderately intense reflexes, the 2016 Ford Escape is one of the best competitors in the portion. Some minimal hybrids feel awesome and bulky from the driver’s seat, yet the clearing feels like a games vehicle with a higher focal point of gravity.
The driving position additionally ascends, obviously, you get this view SUV-style instructing of the street, be that as it may, the Escape remains solidly planted on the walkway amid quick moves. Luckily, this element does not come to the detriment of driving solace, which is excellent contrasted with class guidelines.
The proficiency fluctuates from the normal with 2.5-liter motors and 1.6-liter turbocharged as a primary concern with the 2.0-liter turbo unit.
Albeit most proprietors will likely be happy with the 1.6-liter turbo increasing speed and mileage, it is hard to oppose the 2.0-liter turbo as it offers a great deal more limit with just a single A slight diminishment in vitality effectiveness.
2016 Ford Escape regardless of the possibility that you have substantial foot, you will see that the 2.0 band easily to relentless notes, while the 1.6 liter requires more successive changes of the programmed transmission to remain in the cadence. The uplifting news is that both turbo motors are likewise tranquil and delicate.
2016 Ford Escape – Driving it smarter with FordPass 2016 Ford Escape Review 2016 Ford Escape, another infotainment framework with touch screen called "Synchronize 3" replaces the greatly condemned My Ford Touch, while the standard sound framework loses its helper input.

1964 Ford F100
1964 Ford F100 (4th Generation) Ford introduced a dramatically new style of pickup in 1961 with the fourth-generation F-Series. Longer and lower than its predecessors, these trucks had increased dimensions and new engine and gearbox choices. Additionally, the 1961–1963 models offered an optional unibody design with the cab and bed integrated. The traditional separate cab/bed was offered concurrently. The unibody proved unpopular, and Ford discontinued the option after the 1963 model year. In 1965, the F-Series was given a significant midcycle redesign. A completely new platform, including the "Twin I-Beam" front suspension, was introduced, and continued to be used until 1996 on the F-150 and until 2016 on the F-250/350 4x2. Additionally, the Ranger name made its first appearance in 1965 on a Ford pickup; previously, the Ranger denoted a base model of the Edsel, but starting in 1965, it was used to denote a high-level styling package for F-Series pickups. ✅ Subscribe to Our Channel for More Cars, Tips & Resources: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/ ✅ Stay Connected 👉 Twitter: https://twitter.com/GuysRide 👉 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twoguysandaride/ 👉 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@twoguysandaride ============================= ✅ SEE all of our HOW TO videos here: CarTechHowTo.com - http://bit.ly/2ZvDrbE ✅ Our Playlists: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/playlists ✅ Other Videos You Might Be Interested In Watching: 🚘 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III - CarTech How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO5Q1upM2CY 🚘 2019 Ford Escape Titanium- CarTech Infotainment How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIE9n3Q0Q2M 🚘 Excel Power Bikes - Electric Bicycles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F53cHrmG0vo 🚘 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid - CarTech Infotainment How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGXVyzB0B3E ============================= ✅ About Two Guys and a Ride: Two Guys and a Ride’s channel is dedicated to all things automotive. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY FILM REVIEW
Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, is the second spin-off film in the Star Wars, following 2016’s Rogue One. This time around, we follow Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) around 11-12 years before the time period of the original Star Wars. After trying to escape the life that he grew up in, Han is forced into a life of crime in order to survive.
So this film really had an uphill battle ever since it was announced. First off, many fans (including myself) were wondering why we needed a Han Solo film when we have an entire galaxy to explore. While that stuff is explored in novels and comics (which I’ve read almost all of), it has never really been explored in film, so many felt that this film wasn’t really needed. Then, with three weeks left into production, the original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, were kicked off and replaced by Ron Howard. There were then plenty of rumors to follow. All in all, this film is better than it has any right to be. Is it the best Star Wars film? No. But it’s a very enjoyable film that adds to the character of Han Solo, while also exploring portions of the universe that have been hinted at the past.
Really though, this film falls on the shoulders of Alden Ehrenreich. If you don’t buy him as Han, the whole film falls apart before it even gets to begin. Luckily, I bought him almost immediately. I actually genuinely loved Ehrenreich’s portrayal of Solo. He’s not Harrison Ford, which is a good thing. This is at a point when the character isn’t where he was when we first met him in the original Star Wars and it’s noticeable. There are traces of who he is throughout, but there are plenty of points where Han learns how to do certain things because of where he is at and Ehrenreich is, simply put, great at toeing that line.
All of the other performances are great too, especially Donald Glover as Lando. While there wasn’t as much riding on Glover’s performance, it would’ve been bad form to screw up Lando. However, Glover nails the character, just like Ehrenreich nails Han. Paul Bettany, while sparingly used, is great as a villain. He takes a key point from Jeff Bridges in Iron Man and constantly invades others’ personal space and creates a very uncomfortable tension throughout.
The action scenes are also very well done throughout, whether it be on foot or in space battles. There specifically one sequence toward the end of the second act and beginning of the third act, that is the best in the entire film. Honestly, the film feels very much like an Indiana Jones film set in the Star Wars universe.
The film is far from perfect though. The first act is very rough. There is a lot of jumping around with really no explanation on what’s happening, with characters coming and going very, very quickly. Once the first act ends though, and you get to the meat of the story, the film is solid, despite a few pacing issues here or there.
Overall, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a fun addition to the Star Wars universe. It isn’t the best film in the franchise, but it hits way more than it misses and is a fun ride throughout.
8.0/10
Thanks for reading!
