Do you know that our schools keep being damaged in every way possible? When firebombing isn’t enough they find other methods because they thirst for our blood. Studio Gateway 2 Assignment 2 - Statement

In continuation of the idea of Glitch and its definition a Glitch is “a sudden, usually temporary malfunction or fault of equipment”. From my original research from assignment 1 Glitches occur in all facets of life from the literal meaning to the deep and intellectual meanings to the idea of glitch. As identified in the previous assignment I found a liking of the digital glitch specifically in the malfunction of pixels and the human connection to the final results, in turn creating a new outlook on the subject in question. I also found a liking of glitched photographic portraiture and the integration of medias like audio and light. The idea of a human interaction connects with my views on a future without a reliance on the connected nature of artificial intelligence. A glitch can occur because of an error or it can be the result of a change via human interaction in which I wanted to integrate and emulate this in my work. In my first experiment, I created a piece which is using a glitched audio track presenting the computer side of my previous ideals with the integration of the human voice in sporadic sympathy with the failures in the audio track creating a harmony of errors. This experiment is wanting to present the more audible errors in both man and machine as the glitches are different in their audible nature and the human is following in the manor like the colloquial statement “a broken record”. Although not 100% repeating in time and pace it has its own forms of error from a non-musically focused brain. This experiment focused on audible glitches and how it can deliver mixed messages depending on what you are focused on in the audio track the man or the machine both deliver a mixed message and correlate to the other thus you need one to understand the other. The second experiment focused on the more visual elements of a glitch. Using the black and white colour profile I gathered 3 free colour printing test patterns. These test strips as otherwise know are produced to provide an example of a final printed colour, it is usually accurate. The experiment integrates the human interacting inducing a glitch once again. The 3 images are printed in a normal manor yet an oversight in the placement of the paper in the printer thus compromises the final print. In turn distorting the final message and reasoning for the printed object. This integration of printing errors is both man and machines doing as the man initiated it and the machine continued with its programming without picking up on the glitch. The third experiment integrates the idea of a human initiated glitch in delivering a message specifically the hand-written message, the experiment looks at how a folded piece of paper with a word written on it looks normal until it is unravelled and unfolded, at which point it looks like a series of lines and strokes on a piece of paper which does not represent any easily discernible message. The human writes in the normal manor but unintendedly contributes towards the glitch which occurs. The piece is connected to the previous experiments as it continues the ideals of human impact causing a glitch in the message and end result of an objects purpose. In my forth experiment I presented a digital glitch of a previous glitch. The 4 styles of pixilated glitches present how the machine side can fail and not deliver the message need. Using my final poster, I documented the meaning of the piece which links into the overall progression of the assessment. My final work is a culmination of elements from all experiments and the base behind my original Assignment 1 Poster. It is an audio-visual work with elements which I think emulate the ideas of a glitch from electronic based to human integration of such glitches. The video presents four images of a glitched poster, the glitches in this regard are mainly pixelated glitches caused by electronic failure. On top of this there is a glitched light which is failing at its purpose of creating an evenly light picture if the area around. It is lighting in a strobed manner. In addition to this the sound track continues the idea of glitch with both digital failure and human failure in delivering an accurate and discernible message. I was wanting to create a glitch of our mist used senses our sight and sound. I feel that the experiments were successful in the development of my interpretation of the idea of glitch over the course of the assignment. I liked the idea of a digital glitch in time leading to using a similar idea as assignment 1 but in a different manner of presentation one which I feel is more immersive on an individual basis.
