For the art assumptions: You never had a proper furry phase but so many of your friends did that you learned how to draw them through osmosis
...And I feel like you love the old Bluth style
hehehe i. kind of had a furry phase actually? it's one of those things where in hindsight i definitely drew a lot of anthros in middle school, but it never was something that really stuck with me if that makes sense? dragons were always my number 1 forever and always but i got those "draw furries!" books that were published in the early 2010s among a lot of other drawing books and it was definitely influential to a degree. that was also the time i was learning to draw people better so anthro stuff slotted in pretty neatly between monsters and people. also pokemon gijinkas. i've always had a soft spot for human-monster-animal hybrids dhfgklhgldh
i struggle to say it was much of a phase because even at that time i was never like. super deep in furry culture? i definitely made a fursona when i was 13, but compared to one of my friends at the time i was just on the outskirts of furry culture and i think i've sort of stayed in that area over the years. i think it's rad and fun overall but i don't consider myself one and it's never been something i've been inclined to really participate in outside of commissions or very occasional doodles. that being said i get why so many furries follow me or like my work (and i appreciate you all)
as for the don bluth style i...enjoy it i suppose, but it holds no particular meaning or significance for me. i vaguely remember seeing some of his stuff growing up but didn't have any impact on my artwork or style. that all being said and actually looking at his art now i can see where you could guess that, and really do appreciate how he stylizes animals in a way that retains semi-realistic features while also incorporating a certain cartoonishness to it all
thank you so much for the ask hehe :3c

AWWW HIII
okay since you're a fellow HTTYD lover maybe I can share how I fell in love with this franchise :DD
It happened longgg ago, in the early 2010s, when I was but a wee lass, just five years old. And when we walked into the cinema and started to watch that movie, my mom said I was positively AWESTRUCK. Apparently I was literally leaning forward in my seat and GAPING at the screen. And I kid you not I'm pretty sure that moment changed my life forever. Like, aside from a now deep rooted love for dragons, I'm pretty sure it affected my taste in films, books, and even music too. The kind of stories I like to consume and create. Idk how to pinpoint it exactly but I'm pretty sure it's true.
And I've loved HTTYD ever since too 😭 my siblings and I watched all the series, and when the second movie was announced I remember being so excited to see how much Hiccup and everyone else had grown 😭
Even now that I've had countless new favorites, countless new phases and hyperfixations, HTTYD still remains as my favorite. And I don't think anything can ever change that. Growing up with this franchise has been amazing and I'm so glad that it found me when it did 🥹
also if I remember correctly i think u said u found HTTYD not in childhood? and if that's true I hope u know that u shouldn't ever feel bad if things aren't ur childhood!!! u are just as much an HTTYD fan as anyone is, including ppl who grew up with it. HTTYD found u at just the right time!!! (idk if this is a thing for u but I know that when I hear how ppl were into something I love way longer I feel bad because I wonder if I'm just as valid of a fan as them, so I want to make sure u know that you are 🥹)
that was a fun rant HAHAHAHA thank you. You are one of my favorite mutuals and I'm so happy and honored to consider you a friend!! Thank you for also liking me for who I am!!! It means a lot 🥹 And I'm also so blessed that we're both growing as Christians at the same time so 🥹 *hug*

Yugioh S5 Ep 19: Yugi and the Only Neck Accessory He Didn’t Really Want to Wear
Been busy! Hopefully stuff will open up soon as I’m taking a hiatus on a different quarantine project and will be finishing painting the entire roof of my car this week? One can hope. Sanding the rust off the whole top of a car takes a long time it turns out?
Also, fun Yugioh fact, I recently painted a book cover for an author who is older so she’s never seen the show, and she looked at my tumblr, saw my Duke Devlin fanart and was like “That’s him. That’s my main character. OMG. You captured him perfectly!” and I was like “Ma’am that is Duke Devlin, hence the single dice earring on his lobes there, but we can work with this.” and now a spiritual Duke Devlin is on the cover of a Wuxia-style fantasy trilogy on the Vella. Had to give him a top knot and delete the eyeliner for Wuxia reasons but uh, that’s just Duke.
So long story short, fanart can get you work, don’t even worry about posting that stuff online because most people don’t even know it’s fanart anyway and older ladies freakin love it.
Back in Yugioh, the team was doing their best to navigate a map through the woods and they do about as well as they normally do.
Tumblr media
And inside Tristan lifted up the floorboards and was like “I found the only way out, this is it, this is the only way.”
Tumblr media
And they ended up in something that has a color scheme I would actually associate with a jungle. Finally. We have finally left California (in order to go to another Hell.)
Tumblr media
Youknow, when we went to California, we visited Hell, and when we went to India, we also took a stop at the nearest death destination. There’s just so much death on this show and sometimes I forget because there’s been a ghost in our party for so freakin long it’s been normalized.
(read more death imagery under the cut)
Joey freaks out at a flock of crows and reveals in this episode something I never realized about him before.
Tumblr media
Like I’m not always the perfect observer as I’m sure you’ve noticed, but I love that this is canon for probably only this episode, but I will never forget it for the entirety of this series.
You go on hating birds, Joey.
Bro was like “Maybe it’s a deep cut about Mai Valentine because she’s a harpy lady” but eh...pretty sure we spent like an entire season of Joey telling us that Mai was a good experience? Would be incredibly funny if immediately after all of S4, Joey was like “You know what? Screw Mai, guys.”
So my thoughts...it’s probably just a literal bird experience. Like I had a friend who hated deer because once she went to a petting zoo, got some pellets to feed the deer, but her finger was sticking up, so when the deer came over to nibble on some pellets her finger went up it’s nose by accident. She was so disgusted by this event that was entirely her fault, that she brought up how much she hated deer basically whenever we saw one.
So like...maybe Joey fed a bird wrong at a petting zoo. I can see him getting bit by a parrot because he was too Joey Wheeler.
But now that we’re in a graveyard neighborhood, Pharaoh decides to hop out because there’s a lot of ghosts here and he needs to practice socializing with his peers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that’s just a Yugioh monster doing the ostrich dance, right? Like this is a meme from like 2010 but on Yugioh in 2003(4?)
Good to see the Ostrich dance here in the land before Vine.
Tumblr media
So they pull out their Pokemon to do some antics, Tea looked like she was about to do something useful, and Yami does a yump across time and space to get her as far away from playing (not)cards as quickly as possible and y’all...sure was a position these animators animated.
Tumblr media
Holy crap.
And I was going off about that scene last season where they woke up in the same bed like...
...have these two been together this entire time? Like together together?
They’re like...way more comfortable than you’d figure they’d be considering Yugi nearly passes out every time he gets a hug. But Yami just like....How long has this been going on? As long as Joey’s fear of birds?
Like obviously this show would never cover what the hell Yugi may be thinking about this overreaching move here, because we’re gonna gloss right over that, and just run away up a flight of stairs. No one mentions this ever again. Which is mind blowing for an anime to do. I think in most anime I watch, the kids would be like “ahh ahhhh I bumped into a booooob!” like it does for I want to say every other episode of My Hero Academia. But in Yugioh, they saw that low hanging fruit and they were like “we expect a higher level of maturity out of our audience. Now here’s a fleet of ostrich dancing tree monsters with faces for crotches.”
Tumblr media
They decided to sprint up this flight of stairs, and it enough of a slope to deter the monsters who are only unbalanced weird legs.
I want us to take a moment and admire this background painting. I can’t unsee the rocks that are all the same size, just piled on top of eachother. Did Alexander the Great just plop rocks here--or was the mountain made up of tons of similarly shaped boulders?
Like there’s a lot of nice bg’s in this arc, don’t get me wrong, but this one...I’m just trying to wrap my head around the logic of it.
Tumblr media
At the top, they meet a pantheon, that is immediately blocked by this wall, because if this arc had a tagline, it’s “Yugi gets inconvenienced every 4 seconds.”
Tumblr media
Bro was like “Clearly they would have pushed it over if Tea wasn’t slacking off” and like...she is actually. Look at her. Only used one hand? Slacker.
Joey was disappointed he couldn’t push over a massive wall, and the team decided not to analyze how much Joey Wheeler thinks of his own strength and instead fixate on these statues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usually in anthro characters they kinda look birdlike but act human. But what about an anthro that’s just a bird? Like human torso, but can turn his head 180 degrees? Yugioh made me ask this question.
And then Joey was like “wait, there may be a solution that isn’t just to use brute strength!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Youknow it is a bummer that Kaiba couldn’t witness Joey own a dragon while he himself only has a robot jet dragon. Although, the jet is probably faster, stronger and overall...better than this baby dragon. It would have been great for Kaiba to witness Joey under-utilize this dragon and forget he has it for like huge swatches of the episode.
And then Grandpa pulled some body horror out of nowhere.
Tumblr media
Wow.
I mean that is really gross.
I guess Grandpa can’t use Blue eyes, because Kaiba ripped it up, Grandpa can’t use Exodia because Weevil tossed it off a boat, and grandpa can’t use the card that’s just a building because...it’s a building.
So instead Grandpa has a bunch of meat and bones that look like something out of Doom. It’s probably from a more obscure Konami property, but I forget which.
Tumblr media
I’ve seen Tristan hold back Joey in this hold, first time it’s been Tea.
So much shipping in this episode, it’s wild.
It’s also wild how low my standards are for what could possibly be shipping when it comes to Yugioh because of how freakin tepid all of these characters are, which as I’ve brought up before, I really don’t mind.
Tumblr media
So Yugi decides that because Grandpa was folding his arms like one monster and it made a gem light up or something, to just do the video game thing and use the giant ass statues as clues.
Tumblr media
Why was this arc not a video game? Like parts of it really feel like it was meant to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Yugi falls down a hole, where the walls cave in like it’s that dumpster in Star Wars but like...it barely phases him.
Tumblr media
Also...Yugi might be able to see in the dark. It’s never been brought up but like...the more I think about it...has Yugi ever struggled to see without the lights on?
Tumblr media
After Joey disappoints everyone, he confronts death.
Tumblr media
And Pharaoh and Yugi decide to solve the puzzle of “how do I get out of this trap dungeon room” which, honestly, is probably what they’re doing every time they hang out in the brain pyramid.
Tumblr media
So they summon their mascot monster, and surprisingly the show decided its ability to fly cannot help them out here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kuriboh manages to become enough of a doormat to push Yami up to the stone and they end up in a set of weird cuts that ended in this?
Like seriously it was like flashes of light and then they were just...up here like this.
Tumblr media
Hey like...
Alexander the Great, my man...
Were you planning to put that stone in the middle of a exhaust vent hoping someone would touch it? Because there’s no way anyone would rationally have done that. You would need to fly to do it. This is the world’s worst DM.
Like Yugioh pulls a lot of fantasy nonsense but this arc is a lot more like a “it’s a kid’s show, just go with it.” arc than most of them. It’s not a bad vibe, necessarily, it’s just not the vibe I’m used to.
Tumblr media
So once I witnessed maybe the most boring conversation I’ve ever witnessed about corn (this was on a twitch stream, by the way, a guy was playing an interesting game, and then a guest came on and started talking about corn and plants for 2 hours) and they would not shut up about how all taxonomy is wrong because there are no such thing as trees and how all animals are labelled incorrectly, and then they started comparing it to like all sorts of mushrooms and phytoplankton as you would if you clearly got a little bit high before dumping your corn knowledge on a twitch stream.
Anyway, after that bizarre experience I suffered so I could learn how to play an obscure video game, I think I can safely say, that while I know everyone here thinks a bird can’t be a dog. If you’re a high biologist: a bird is absolutely a dog. Apparently you can just do that if you’re the most boring biologist alive and no one will argue with you because to do that would involve talking to you. We’ll just say a bird is a dog and no one can fight me or I will talk about the corn book that this guest on this twitch chat was thinking about renting from the library about the different types of corn mutations inherent in freakin Indiana. Therefore, Joey’s fear of birds and dogs is same.
So they use Dark Magician to save them from the statues, and Yugi busts into the pantheon again because they got to open this casket before a time limit that I kind of forgot about, tbh.
Tumblr media
And inside the casket, is...this thing!
Tumblr media
(enjoy this line on the bottom of the image I don’t feel like fixing it)
And you may say to yourself...it looks like it’s just floating in mid-air, that’s silly, and so I want to introduce you to the next panel where you can see that it is...quite literally...just floating in the air like a video game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and it just slurps itself onto Yugi before he can be like “nonono.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wasn’t there some horror movie where you were stuck in some sort of body brace that slowly tortures you (was that Saw?) This has that vibes. Like man that looks uncomfortable to wear over a jacket and two belts and a collar that is another belt.
That and I...I gotta appreciate that Yugi popped his collar while wearing body armor and chunky necklace. What 00′s fashion appreciation right there.
Bit like...this isn’t breathable, right? Like Yugi’s gonna finally take this thing off and his jacket will just be completely soaked in sweat?
Anyway, that’s it for this post, next week we’ll see if Yugi can walk through a doorway in that thing.
Also, I can’t bring up the ostrich dance without sharing the vines of my generation

[TRANSCRIPT] Episode 0: The Anime They Once Saw (Or Didn’t See)
Kat  0:00
Hello and welcome to the Untitled Tallgeese Podcast, a podcast where four of us will watch Gundam Wing and then tell you all about Gundam Wing. My name is Kat, I write about comics on the internet, and I will be your episode moderator for today.
Mallory  0:17
And I'm Mallory, and I also write about comics.
Cathy  0:20
I'm Cathy, I don't write about comics. I am actually a lawyer, which sucks.
All  0:26
[laughter]
Caitlin  0:28
I am Caitlin. I'm a PhD researcher in Tokyo right now working on Japanese film. Yeah.
Kat  0:33
Extremely legit.
Caitlin  0:35
Are we?
Cathy  0:36
and we're all here to talk about the Gundam Wing.
Kat  0:38
[crosstalk] I mean we might be.
Kat  0:41
We are here to talk about Gundam Wing, the maybe not critically acclaimed, but fandom, okay, audience favorite anime  that was released in 1995 in Japan and then made its way to the US in March 2000 on Toonami. So, we're going to talk about our fandom history and our history with the show Gundam Wing and I guess I will kick that off. So I-- I grew up watching anime because my dad is a huge nerd. So we were obviously watching Toonami. And the promos blew my mind. My friends and I all got really into it in middle school. Then we discovered fanfiction and we started with Heero/Relena fan fiction. [Caitlin: Ugh.] And then then we realized people could be gay.
Caitlin  1:29
Uugh, thank god.
Kat  1:30
That opened up like, I know it was like the clouds parted. rainbows fell from the sky. We were like, Oh, wow.
Mallory  1:39
[singing] "A whole new world"
Kat  1:40
[laughter] And then I don't know. I wrote a lot of fanfiction posted it on FF dotnet, got into fandom and then stayed in fandom. So, Mallory?
Mallory  1:53
I didn't have cable growing up. So whatever anime exposure I got was like, whatever was on Saturday morning cartoons. So Digimon was my first fandom and I was really into that.
Kat  2:08
Hell yeah
Mallory  2:09
And that sort of like bled into Gundam Wing somehow, I don't really remember how. But I found my way to Gundam Wing, read a lot of fanfic, hadn't ever really watched the show. And then in high school, my friend had some like random episodes from the first season question mark. I have no idea. So I watched those, and really enjoyed that? But I have no idea what their context was, so I'm coming at this pretty, pretty new.
Cathy  2:44
So you have never watched it from beginning to end?
Mallory  2:47
No.
Cathy  2:47
Got it. This will be fun.
Mallory  2:50
I'm expecting to be really disapproving of all the adults in the room. I find that like, now that I'm watching anime about kids, I'm really protective of these kids like, "Hey, this is really unethical!"
Cathy  3:02
So I'm like Kat, I started watching anime when I was I think around Middle School. I had a friend who got me into Sailor Moon, then I think it was Dragon Ball that was on Toonami at the time? I can't really remember the chronology.
Kat  3:16
Yeah.
Cathy  3:17
But then they did the promos for Gundam Wing, so then I started watching that on Toonami. And it was my first mecha series. And my first Gundam series, I think it's a lot of people's first Gundam series in the United States.
Cathy  3:31
I have attempted to do similar projects to this multiple times where I go back and I rewatch, and I haven't really had the opportunity to actually finish those rewatches. But my memory of it is still kind of stuck of when I was in middle school slash high school. I did get into fandom, so I expect to remember a lot of inaccuracies about what happened. [laughter] Because a lot of what my facts have with this series are have now mutated and changed. But I was a huge Gundam Wing fan, I think it still remains my favorite of the Gundam series just because I have so many memories of it? But I really excited to talk to Mallory, about what you feel and your experiences because it's been so long since I've talked to somebody who actually has never seen the series and doesn't know the story. So I'm super excited about this.
Caitlin  4:24
Yeah!
Cathy  4:25
All right, Cait, tell us about your family history.
Caitlin  4:27
Yeah, so similar to all of us, I guess, I watched anime growing up. I got into Sailor Moon sort of through an accident of just happening to see a very specific episode on Toonami in like 1999, 1998 maybe. So after that, I got really into anime and really into the internet. I think I was very depressed as a child. [laughter] So I spend a lot of time online. I believe that like my my first memories of Gundam Wing are when it was on Toonami: Sailor Moon was on first and then Dragon Ball Dragon Ball Z, and then Gundam Wing. And then they also were showing like the quote unquote unedited versions late
Cathy  5:09
Yes!
Kat  5:09
Yes, the midnight run
Cathy  5:11
The midnight run Right.
Cathy  5:12
Yeah. So very specific memories of like, I think I was mainly attracted to the, like, team format of Gundam if that makes sense? [Cathy: Yeah yeah yeah!] where it was used to sailor Sailor Moon where you have a team of color coded characters. And I'd, at a younger age been really into Power Rangers, where you had a team of color coded characters. So the marketing of Gundam Wing really appealed. You know, cuz I was just a kid watching on TV, I never really, I don't know if I watched the whole thing as a kid, but I got really into the fandom. And by 2000, 2001, I already knew about gay stuff online.
Kat  5:48
Wow. Look at you early bloomer.
Caitlin  5:50
Yeah. So So I got really into the various Gundam Wing pairings, I think it was mainly, I was mainly a 3x4, I think as a child. I went through some, 1x2, and then 2x5 phases. [laughter]
Caitlin  6:09
I still am a big advocate for 2x5, I think it's underrated.
Kat  6:12
I'm a big 2x5.
Cathy  6:13
2x5 is a good pairing, it definitely is.
Kat  6:16
Yeah.
Cathy  6:16
It's a better pairing as an adult.
Kat  6:17
So okay, I think that's actually a pretty good bounce off. So these are the things we remember about Gundam Wing. It was marketed, like, I remember the Toonami marketing 'cause I was really hype for this show. They had like these really extreme commercials.
Caitlin  6:34
Yeah.
Kat  6:35
Um, and I thought the voice acting was good. I don't know, maybe we'll revisit that during this watch, to see if it still is,
Caitlin  6:43
[crosstalk] Was it dubbed?,
Cathy  6:44
[crosstalk] It was dubbed, yes.
Kat  6:44
But I was ready for it. It was dubbed.
Caitlin  6:46
It was dubbed. One thing with the with the Japanese voice acting though, is that it's every single famous voice actor from the 90s. And so you can, you can use Gundam Wing is like a six degrees of every single voice actor from the 1990s.
Caitlin  6:59
Oh, that's cool.
Mallory  7:00
I mean, there are a lot of big American or like, dub dub names on the dub side, too.
Cathy  7:06
One of the things that I remember very strongly about Toonami is that they had what I think we would now call anime music videos, AMVs.
Kat  7:16
Yeah
Cathy  7:17
But they would play
Caitlin  7:18
Yeah,
Cathy  7:18
These montage trailers, where they'd stich together all their different series. And as they accumulated more anime series, these became really, I think, cinematic and gripping tales, where they would kind of try to tell a story to be about, like bravery or honor or like,
Kat  7:36
It's like, plugged directly into my little 11 year old brain like, Whoa,
Cathy  7:40
Yes. And one of them was, I remember was called, like, "technological development" or something like that, that featured a lot of the Gundam Wing clips.
Kat  7:47
Oh, yeah, cuz you only download them from like, KaZaa,  or whatever horrible thing I was putting into my computer.
Caitlin  7:52
Yeah. We gotta see if we can find those. [crosstalk] They must be online somewhere.
Cathy  7:56
They are online. And I think they actually came out with like, I think somebody had either like hand by hand remastered them.
Kat  8:03
[crosstalk] Oh sick.
Cathy  8:02
Or they created a remastered version of it. They're wonderful. But that's I think one of the things about Toonami that I remember really strongly was Gundam Wing kind of is one of their, like epitome of like, Cool Anime that I feel like Toonami did and what it did was like they stiched together all these different things Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo and all these other stories to create a story about teenage growth, which is kind of strange and also weirdly fitting at the end of the day about like where Gundam is in the whole universe.
Kat  8:07
I think that's one of the reasons it blew up so much here because the marketing was really intense. Like Toonami, like it sort of right at the beginning, like people were into Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z was getting big. And like the manga boom was sort of happening in bookstores. So contextually, I think, Cartoon Network knew what the hell they were doing. They were like, "We can market the hell out of this."
Caitlin  8:55
And also objectively speaking, Gundam Wing was one of their cooler series. Like, Sailor Moon is cool. Tenchi Muyo is not cool.
All  9:04
[laughter]
Kat  9:06
Yeah.
Caitlin  9:07
Even even if you love it, it's not really cool. Dragon Ball. Love it. I don't know if it's really cool. Gundam Wing had like a very strong -
Kat  9:14
[crosstalk] like the chad of animes
Caitlin  9:16
- adult aesthetic to it, even though it was like, relatively, well, relatively appropriate for like 12 year olds.
Kat  9:23
And they swore during the midnight show.
Caitlin  9:25
Oh yeah,
Kat  9:26
They swore and there was blood.
Caitlin  9:27
So it was very cool. And so I felt very adult watching it even though I didn't really understand what was going on because it's all this fake politics crap.
Kat  9:35
Yeah, I was gonna say I did do a rewatch in like, like, right after college, so it was probably around 2010 ish, maybe? And I don't think we finished the series, but it was like, wow, I used to think this was very deep. [laughter] And I thought all the people in it who are the adults like Mallory, you were mentioning earlier, like they're actually like 17 and 19
Cathy  10:01
Yes!
Kat  10:01
in this show. So watching it at the age of 21, I was like, "Ooh no, don't give these people anything."
Cathy  10:09
I was actually thinking about that. Because when you said Mallory, "oh, well, I become very protective of the children. I disapprove the adults," in my head of thinking "what adults?" [crosstalk, Caitlin: yeah what adults?] because actually, in Gundam Wing, there's a funny thing where people are either 15, 25 or like 70. And there's no in between and nobody really makes adult decisions. So it, That was one thing that really shocked me because as I go back to revisit it, I think, "Oh my god, I'm actually older than almost everybody in this series."
Caitlin  10:39
How old, how old is Treize supposed to be?
Cathy  10:41
He's like 23, or 24.
Kat  10:42
He's 19.
Cathy  10:43
No, Zechs is 19.
Kat  10:44
Oh, Zechs is 19. Right.
Cathy  10:47
I just the idea of giving people who, you know, would have either been in college or just graduate college in my worldview, huge robots.
Kat  10:58
I think the ages of all the characters gets obscured by the anime art style, you know?
Cathy  11:03
Yeah.
Kat  11:03
In a lot of anime fandoms.
Mallory  11:04
And when you're watching this, when you're a kid, you want to see yourself as the protagonist. So it makes sense that, you know, a 17 year old seems like old and cool, and I want to be that person. And then when you're 30, you're like, the 17 year old should not be at war.
Kat  11:23
Relevant is that we definitely watched Evangelion. That was our last series.
Caitlin  11:29
I don't know, I think, I think Heero Yuy is doing fine in war. I'm gonna, I'm gonna be honest, as a 30 year old, I think these kids are much better at war than I would be.
Cathy  11:39
Well, so that's what I find kind of interesting, is that I think this series actually... I don't, I know this wasn't the point but when I rewatched it recently, or just like the first couple of episodes, it seemed, it made a lot of sense, because they were like 15 or 24. Like the series, actually stitches together...
Caitlin  11:58
Yeah.
Cathy  11:58
...really well, because of how young they are, and kind of like the purity of feeling that they have, which I think is
Kat  12:05
Yeah, it is, like
Cathy  12:06
only maybe
Kat  12:07
like that [indistinguishable?]
Cathy  12:07
which I think is like only really, truly possible because I have to think of them as like 15 or 21 or 19 year olds. that is not at all when I took away when I was watching in high school. Right?
Mallory  12:21
Well, I mean, right.
Caitlin  12:22
Part of the ideology of Gundam in general is like trying to restore a form of hope, and youth to, like, young people growing up in Japan, who are the target audience for this, and this idea that, like, you still have the power to change the world, you still have the power to bring about peace in a way that you want, even though you're being manipulated and oppressed by all these crazy adults who make you pilot giant robots. So I think there's a significant, like part of the series is the fact that they are kids who have been recruited into child warfare, and now have to find some way out of that. And like my memory of the series is that even though most of, most of the decisions made are very bad, the kids in general are not making terrible decisions. They're making pretty good decisions.
Kat  13:12
Yeah, the pilots themselves...
Mallory  13:14
[crosstalk] Yeah
Kat  13:14
...are like doing the best they can be doing in that circumstance.
Cathy  13:17
[crosstalk] Exactly, exactly
Kat  13:19
But I think it's sort of interesting, 'cause it's like, to me Gundam Wing is definitely like a fandom era, because I think a lot of stuff exemplifies like...there's like a lot of tropes cycling through it. But also like, the series itself, is so perfectly...like, I think of it as a series that are so perfectly set up for fandom because there's a lot of like, here's my one episode mission, and we have to be at a safe house, I guess. And it's just like, a long interminable war. So there's like, a big, a lot of world building. Yeah, that creates all these spaces that sort of separate from all the political machinations of the series.
Caitlin  13:58
And that's also I think, a lot of what it was meant to be when it was created within the Gundam franchise like it was it was designed to have sort of a BL appeal to girls writing for comic market and that sort of thing. So it had like the setup of five hot guys who you could combine in various forms. And then also like Gundam itself, in general, it's designed to be and a sort of open universe that you can step into at various points, which also facilitates fandom engagement
Mallory  14:28
[crosstalk] literal fandom bait.
Caitlin  14:29
usually in the form, yeah, usually in the form of model collecting, which is like one of the main Gundam forms of fandom which we probably won't talk about too much on the show. But you, you kind of
Kat  14:41
Uh I've definitely built some Gundam models.
Caitlin  14:43
Yeah. Well, you will be the expert on that because I've never touched a Gundam model in my life. But that is like the big thing where you can you can get the model you can construct it, you can learn a little bit more about the, like, the technology and the different like details of the models and stuff like that. And it just gives you like a slight, like Little bit more of these like tiny narratives and that sort of what the fans are consuming rather than an overall plot that makes sense, which is not what Gundam has really.
Kat  15:11
So Gundam [Wing] has like the cool robots but also these hot boys in them.
Caitlin  15:15
That's what I want.
Mallory  15:16
I mean Well, that's exactly what I want to show right now. So it sounds perfect?
Kat  15:21
Honestly, yeah.
Mallory  15:23
I think Evangelion, sort of, because, Kat, you and I just finished -- or are almost finished with -- Neon Genesis Evangelion [Kat, crosstalk: we haven't done all the movies yet] which was also it was my first time [Cathy, crosstalk: Congratulations, laugh] watching the whole series...wow, grim
Kat  15:40
I also only consumed
Mallory  15:42
[crosstalk] grim
Kat  15:42
[crosstalk] I consumed it like piecemeal too
Mallory  15:44
And depressing
Kat  15:45
It was great.
Mallory  15:46
Very good but um grim.
Kat  15:50
Yeah it's pretty grim.
Cathy  15:52
Yeah, it's interesting to me because I feel like Evangelion doesn't make a lot of sense as a cultural product unless you've consumed a series like Gundam or its ancestors before watching it and yet Evangelion is a lot of people's introduction to giant robot series. So I always find that kind of interesting...
Caitlin  16:13
[crosstalk] It's very weird.
Cathy  16:14
because it, it is subversive, and I think it's subversive even if you don't know the tropes of the giant robot series, of which Gundam is perhaps a prime example. Gundam Wing...
Kat  16:27
So I was gonna ask that and like, would you say, since Evangelion is definitely a like the subversion of this genre, would you say Gundam Wing is like the type of series that it is subverting? Or do you think it's in a different place?
Caitlin  16:41
Gundam Wing and Evangelion came out the same year? Gundam Wing is in some ways a, it's already like a parody form of the original iteration of Gundam.
Kat  16:55
Okay, so it's--is it like, um, like the pure essence of teens-robots.
Caitlin  17:02
It's, it's more like, I feel like by the time of Gundam Wing, the tropes of the original Gundam series are so well set that a lot of things in Gundam Wing to, like the fans who watched the original Gundam or like later Gundams, seemed like a rehash but it was designed to bring in new fans. So something like Zechs Merquis is very clearly like a Char Aznable character. It's just sort of a reiteration of that.
Kat  17:29
So is it like a Star Wars, like a Star Wars sequel?
Caitlin  17:33
Like how the Force Awakens is kind of a rehash of yeah, of A New Hope. And then, but it still brings in a lot of fans and has appealing characters and good aesthetics
Kat  17:43
Right, yeah, I guess I think of them, the two shows, as sort of like, splitting the take on... like, what would you say is like the ur-mecha show?
Cathy  17:52
The original Gundam
Caitlin  17:54
Original Gundam?
Cathy  17:54
Yeah, Mobile Suit Gundam.
Caitlin  17:56
I mean, they're, they're older iterations, there's other robot shows. But I feel like when people think of mecha, the first thing they think of is Mobile Suit Gundam.
Cathy  18:06
So the way like I now think of Gundam Wing after the fact of experiences I have now is that like Gundam Wing is actually a perfect like K-Pop boy band way that they built it and so if you can kind of think of it like that, like it's, you need enough of the tropes and symbols, so that everybody watches it and immediately knows it's a Gundam series.
Cathy  18:30
Like the colors of Wing Gundam are so obviously
Kat  18:34
Yeah.
Cathy  18:34
a Gundam Mecca and you need that you can't get away from it. And same thing with like Zech's having a mask it the reason I think of it as being in in the Kpop industry is like there's a derivative sense. And that's animated by both like Merchandising, and advertising and what audiences want but at the same time, it's like this incredibly pure understanding of what makes us like things? And like when you get that when you really get it, like, it doesn't matter how like, quote, unquote manipulative or exploitative it can seem like you love it. And that's enough, right to make it like a thing that we all want to keep coming back to.
Mallory  19:12
And there's basically like, an archetype right? In  all of the different characters like you have the more
Kat  19:18
Yeah, you have the serious one.
Mallory  19:20
That's what I was thinking.
Kat  19:21
Like, the goofy one.
Mallory  19:23
Yeah, the goofy one, the sort of mess
Kat  19:25
the ugly one,
Mallory  19:26
like really cute one.
Kat  19:29
Yeah, that's why I was thinking American boy bands cuz they all have to have like a type of heartthrob. Yeah, I'm a bad boy. I love death.
Caitlin  19:38
One of them's, one of them's a rapper.
Kat  19:40
Okay, so we talked a little bit about how we got into it. We talked a little bit about fandoms. And we touched on pairings, do we want to go into pairings at all? Or like our fave characters, or who we think our fave characters will be Before this rewatch?
Cathy  19:54
You know before we do that--Mallory, can you try to tell us what you think this series is about? I'm actually really curious, like before you do a complete viewing, like what? what is what is your understanding of what happens in Gundam Wing?
Mallory  20:08
Um, there's a long interminable war. These boys are recruited by some shadowy government whatever. And they're piloting these mecha. Uugh, I just remember Duo being really annoying.
Caitlin  20:28
[loud gasp] [laughter] [crosstalk] Oh my god.
Mallory  20:29
I mean, not annoying, like, being sort of...
Kat  20:32
Wow.
Mallory  20:33
...the one the pushy one like, he's the challenging one to Heero's "I'm serious and dour." Literally, I have the most broad strokes impressions of what this show is. I just know it looked really fucking cool every time I saw it in, like, a commercial and couldn't watch it.
Cathy  20:55
Fascinating.
Caitlin  20:57
Honestly, even having seen Gundam Wing, I'm not sure I could explain it much better. I don't remember who recruited them.
Mallory  21:03
Okay. Okay, that does make me feel better. Because I was like, Oh, I don't? Do I actually know what the show is? What am I getting myself into?
Caitlin  21:14
There's there's a lot of weird politics.
Mallory  21:17
Well, I'm really excited for that. And I don't mean that sarcastically. Like, I'm really excited to, to see what this world is like, because I remember, like images or impressions. But everything is like out of context. So it'll be cool to see what that context is. Like deja vu? Oh, I remember that. I've seen that in AMV.
Kat  21:48
I remember this from fics that just rewrite scenes from this show.
Mallory  21:55
Yeah, like, what do I know? What do I know of Gundam that is from fanfic only, or is actual canon? I'm curious to figure out.
Kat  22:10
I think everyone's a lot less obnoxious in canon.
Caitlin  22:14
That's true.
Mallory  22:15
Okay, okay.
Caitlin  22:16
This was a this was a really good fandom for the the fandom phenomenon of, you take a character's most, like, annoying trait, and you emphasize it like times 10 in your fanfic.
Cathy  22:28
Yes.
Kat  22:28
Yeah
Caitlin  22:28
Just so everybody knows you know what that character is like.
Kat  22:31
Heero's gonna threaten to kill everybody all the time, constantly.
Caitlin  22:34
"Omae o korosu."
Cathy  22:36
[laughing crosstalk] And so, it's funny that you guys mentioned safe houses, because actually, there are very few safe houses in the original series. In fact, I think there's like maybe one or two scenes ever, where they are all in a safe house provided by one of their allies. And it's a really fascinating trope, because it like pervades the fanfic? But I remember, that I remember was like a big deal, like, I went back and I was like, actually, these people spend very little downtime with each other in the actual series and I find that fascinating.
Kat  23:12
Right? So you have to fill it all in.
Mallory  23:13
Oh, wait, what?
Caitlin  23:14
They actually barely know each other.
Cathy  23:16
Yeah, they truly barely know each other. [crosstalk]
Mallory  23:18
Wait. Oh no, I thought, I thought this was going to be like..
Kat  23:23
[crosstalk] They actually never interact.
Mallory  23:24
we're going to get together and become like a team
Caitlin  23:26
No, no.
Cathy  23:26
Absolutely not,
Caitlin  23:27
They don't fight together; It's 50 episodes of them not interacting.
Cathy  23:31
They, they literally have like, they like, there's probably one or two scenes in which all five of them are on the same battlefield at the same time. And almost every single one of those scenes involves them fighting with each other because like,
Kat  23:44
[crosstalk]Oh, yeah, they fight each other alone.
Cathy  23:45
What's going on? And this was the thing that I'm sure we'll come back to when I came back to this is when I was rewatching. It in college, I realized that of the two people who spend the most time with each other, it's like Trowa and Heero. Because, yes, it is what arc where they actually go on a road trip, which like,
Kat  24:03
it's great. I wrote a thing
Cathy  24:04
like wiped it from my memory when I was thinking about the series, but it really drives home. You know, again, to your point like what of this series do I did I remember that was just from fanfic, and was just what like the fanfic I read very specifically. And so that was one of the things is like, when you come back as an adult, I was like, all of this stuff is so much more interesting to me because like, I actually, like, I don't get me wrong, I still have shipping opinions. But like, I'm older and I have I I'm famous for this. And Kat knows this. I like don't have OTPs. And I'm like not very good about actually being very loyal to pairings. And so as an adult coming back to this, I was like, Oh, this is actually really interesting because the permutations that fandom came up with also came from, like,  non-canon material, because there's a lot of non-canon material, like promotional images that bear no resemblance whatsoever to canon.
Kat  24:54
Okay, I would,  I would call those extra canonical, right?
Caitlin  24:58
No, they're, they're extra canonical, they count in some form.
Kat  25:02
Right? 'Cause they're official.
Cathy  25:04
I guess so. I mean, sure, we'll talk about that as time comes but like.
Caitlin  25:08
Listen, a canon is not just the story. It's the entire media mix around it. It's those, it's those things that you can collect. It's the extra manga. It's Frozen Teardrop,
Cathy  25:18
Like, Gundam Wing actually, I think is one of the few franchises I know where like "pair the spares" was a real merchandising tactic.
Kat  25:26
Yes, it was.
Cathy  25:27
And so, so everybody had somebody... gay, I mean, like, not like,
Kat  25:34
Wufei had two!
Cathy  25:35
They had a gay and a straight interest that they were paired up with. And so, um, so it's like, fascinating to me to come back and be like, actually, the canon is a lot more flexible and interesting than I remembered it.
Caitlin  25:49
The canon for me is like, remarkable in its commitment to not officially putting anyone together. Like it was, it's very good at balancing out all of the different pairings that it wants to support.
Mallory  26:01
Mm hmm.
Caitlin  26:02
Um, it's interesting to see which ones got picked up as the main two in fandom, which for me, were always 1x2 and 3x4 dominated the fandom, because they're both like, friendly, maybe talkative, personable guy and like silent, brooding, weirdo,
Kat  26:22
Warrior.
Caitlin  26:22
What fandom loves! Fandom loves that exact dynamic in every form. And so like, what 1, 1 and 3, were never going to work together because they're both silent and brooding. Fandom was never gonna pick that up. It's too It's too boring. It's not dynamic enough, right?
Mallory  26:37
Like, you can't fight. There's no banter,
Cathy  26:39
Which is actually weird, because if you go back and watch the episodes, you'll see it. Heero actually is not that quiet. And Trowa is like a nutcase. And so
Kat  26:48
they're really funny together,
Cathy  26:49
when they are together, they're actually incredibly dynamic in ways that in fact, the canon doesn't establish 1x2, or 3x4 to be. And so it is really fascinating, because I do agree with Caitlin. What came out of this canon is very different from what I think the show gives. And I don't know the show was like, open minded because it wanted to sell as much merch as possible or
Caitlin  27:13
It's that.
Cathy  27:13
Yeah, so I don't know.
Mallory  27:14
Capitalism.
Kat  27:16
I am gonna say I think the show is a 3x4 shipper. Like I think if the show had a pairing, it would be a three, it would be 3x4, like from my recollections of the show
Mallory  27:26
Yeah
Caitlin  27:26
I always thought that was true. But now
Cathy  27:28
I disagree.
Caitlin  27:29
I feel like I'm gonna go into this and and be like, they never
Kat  27:32
Nobody else has a musical interlude.
Cathy  27:34
But the but the thing is, here's Okay, so not to, like, make this too much about the pairing... But I also think 1x2 and 3x4 become established. I put that in quotes early in the series. And so it becomes entrenched and people assume that that's the pairing. But actually, I just remember so strongly when I went back and rewatched that I was like, there really is not that much evidence for Trowa and Quatre's like instantaneous connection because Quatre has that with almost every other pilot, and Trowa's relationship with Heero is like so much more interesting when I come back to it, even though I definitely think they would never work. They would like killing each other and instead as an adult.
Kat  28:12
And I mean, I love that pairing. And like the one thing that came out of my rewatch a million years ago was I wrote a 1x3 fic cuz I really love those episodes, and fandom didn't do anything with it. But I feel like, I feel like Quatre and Trowa are framed slightly differently than all the other potential pairings so that they could be together.
Cathy  28:33
Even up until Endless Waltz like, I really just feel like that that was an early series thing. And then as you go on into the series, that relationship while still important, was not really emphasized any more or less.
Kat  28:47
But I mean, if it, if it comes out of the gate strong, [laughter] like
Caitlin  28:51
That's all that matters
Kat  28:52
I still think that the show was pushing that one if it pitched. Like if it was giving the most evidence to any one of them, I think the early stuff was really like, ~look at this beautiful pairing.~
Caitlin  29:04
So wait do we all want to, maybe to end this episode, we should all go through and predict what are OTP or pseudo OTP for Cathy will be by the end of this rewatch.
Kat  29:16
But also tell me your fave character because that's what I asked like, 15 minutes ago.
Cathy  29:21
Okay, Kat you first.
Kat  29:23
Oh, well, my favorite character has always been Duo Maxwell. And I'm predicting that he's still going to be my fave character. And I am going to stake my flag on Duo/Wufei, 2x5.
Cathy  29:36
Mallory?
Mallory  29:37
I think from what I remember, I really liked Trowa, I thought Heero was too dour, but I also think that I might relate to him a lot more this time around. So I'm going to say that Heero is going to be my favorite character. And I've always liked...see, I don't know about fandom pairings. I want to say it'll be...well it was Duo/Heero before? No, but I've-- I really like Duo/Wufei so, like, I think that's just always gonna be my Gundam Wing ship.
Cathy  30:20
So when I was a kid watching it my favorite was Duo Maxwell, but I know from my prior rewatching, or attempts to rewatch the series, that as an older person coming into the series, I actually like the girls a lot more, like Relena and Dorothy and Noin became my favorite characters and I did not give them the credit they deserved when I was watching it as a younger person.
Cathy  30:41
I also was 1x2 shipper but again, I know that what I came out of the series really shipping was disastrous Heero/Trowa, and then Duo/Wufei.
Caitlin  30:56
Okay, I see we are all Duo/Wufei fans now.
Kat  30:59
[crosstalk] That's why this is going to be the superior Gundam Wing podcast.
Caitlin  31:02
Yeah. I feel like so, my favorite character when I was originally watching as a kid was Quatre. I think probably because like I always liked like, the friendly blondes in boy bands?
Kat  31:13
That go apeshit?
Caitlin  31:15
When I got older, I was more into Duo and Duo is was probably still my favorite character. I was into Duo/Wufei for a long time. I just think that they are funny together and terrible. And I actually really like Wufei a lot. I sort of admire that fake honor sort of thing. But I, since everybody said Duo/Wufei, I feel like I should say something else, which is that I think that I will get more into 3x4 again after this rewatch, because it's a comforting pairing, in some ways. It's a return. And we're all very full of anxiety right now. [laughter] And so we just need Quatre and stupid, crazy Trowa, you know, having their pure love connection that fandom imagined for them from the beginning.
Kat  32:02
It's real.
Mallory  32:03
I look forward to it.
Cathy  32:04
I do too. I also look forward to hating Treize because that's what happened the last time I rewatched this. He's such a fuck boy.
Kat  32:12
I'm excited to love Dorothy and Relena.
Cathy  32:14
My god, they're so good. Yeah, they're so good. That's what I should have said is my favorite pairing.
Kat  32:20
Fandom definitely ruined me for a little bit, like, "urgh, Relena!"
Caitlin  32:24
When I was a kid, part of the appeal of Gundam Wing fandom was in some ways that it was so sexist, and so I could like act out my own internalized misogyny at the time. And so like, I like I was definitely participating in that of like a group breaking up the boys, whatever. And then in later iterations, I like love Relena. So.
Kat  32:45
Yeah, she was just such an easy reason for them to get together, right? For 1x2, but in the show, she's way more than a plot device. So that was kind of frustrating.
Caitlin  32:56
In the show, she's easily the most one of the most interesting and active characters for sure.
Kat  33:02
As podcast Daddy, I declare Episode Zero officially over. Thank you everyone for your time and catch us in two weeks with Episode One: The boy whose wings killed adolescence.
Caitlin  33:16

20 Years of Art
2000
Tumblr media
(OC / Celes from Final Fantasy 6 / OC / OC)
The influence of Final Fantasy 6, off of the Anthology collection, and Yoshitaka Amano caused a significant shift in my art, leading my human figures to be very slender, graceful, and frequently pale. Most of it was of women, some of it was of horses, and by then I was very self-consciously starting to draw men. I mostly worked in pencils and colored pencils. Faces were oval with high hairlines and long, sharp, narrow noses. Also note my evident fear of mouth-seams and lower eyelids. I was pretty terrible at coloring, often feeling that coloring one of my sketches ruined all the nice linework.
2001
Tumblr media
(Quistis from Final Fantasy 8 / Rosa from Final Fantasy 4? / Schala from Chrono Trigger / Dark Knight OC from Final Fantasy 4)
This is where more anime influences came in, and I consciously took on a semi-anime, semi-realistic (in my own mind) style. My ideal of beauty was overbig eyes, overlong nose, and oversmall mouth, and I stuck to it pretty relentlessly. Trying to figure out shadows and face structure. Still bad at coloring. I was incredibly proud of that charcoal picture. Was also going through my mandatory Dark 'n Edgy phase, with a big helping of Phantom of the Opera, Sarah Brightman, and my attempts at designing supercool clothes, many of which I wouldn't have actually worn, even given the opportunity.
2002
Tumblr media
(Me trying to recreate “Flaming June” / OC, who incidentally looks almost exactly like Sarah Brightman and whose diadem was bodily lifted from a Jodi Lee painting / angsty symbolic wet chain lady / OC)
Deep in the Dark 'n Edgy. Faces are still very heavily made-up, with big lashes, defined upper eyelids, and dark lips. Trying very hard to be a good artist though, have high expectations for the future. I was so proud of that final pose and worked so hard on it. Lined paper? So not a problem. Besides, how else am I supposed to draw during class? A sketchbook would've been even more obvious than the incredibly obvious I already was. I'm able to listen while drawing pretty reliably, and I did manage to take detailed notes while doodling, so at least I had that going for me.
2003
Tumblr media
(Celes / OC / OC / Hermes-inspired wing lady)
I was focusing (at least some of the time) on backgrounds and trying to make my work detailed and polished. Coloring is still hopeless. Often when I colored, I would go super light, even when I was using dark or intense colors. It would give my pictures a sort of faint, half-assed hazy look. I remember an art teacher urging me to use more color, but I probably resisted because I knew that way lay total destruction. I'm sorry, well-meaning art teacher. You are unversed in the ways of my pencils. I have killed too many sketches to take those kinds of risks.
2004
Tumblr media
(Rosa? / Meliara from Crown Duel / willow-dress lady / Geddoe and Queen from Suikoden 3)
See the Meliara picture? That's supposed to be a night scene in a forest. Front-lit by blazing firelight. I was too afraid to make the colors darker. This is dark enough, okay? Anyway, this year, along with being utterly obsessed with Suikoden 3 and Crown Duel, I was letting my art head in a more realistic direction...
2005
Tumblr media
(OC / Queen / Queen / part of Zetta and Salome from Makai Kingdom; I remember deliberately copying those swoopy Ss from one of my friends’ handwriting. Wishes ended up being the first longform fanfic I posted online.)
...that really flourished this year. It's not actually realism, but I made a point to give my characters, especially the women, more realistic bodies. Faces are very round in this period, often with soft features. Noses are prominent. I'm also, finally, using more vibrant colors. I probably got my first Prismacolor pencils around this time. I also got some really cheap markers, but had no idea how to use them so mostly stuck to pencils.
2006
Tumblr media
(All OCs)
I look back on this as a good year. I was learning better coloring techniques. (Bold colors! Press that pencil down! Okay, I still had much to learn.) I got an Elfwood gallery while the site was doing its slow mosey into oblivion. But that was an important step, not just looking at other people's art online, but putting my own up as well. There were downsides though. I began to feel more insecure – or maybe more realistic? – about my art, on this site with so many highly talented artists. Still, 2006 is a good year. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot.
2007
Tumblr media
(vampire and hunter / Fleur from Harry Potter / OC / Avril from Wild Arms 5)
The year of Fleur Delacour. This is when I was writing Kindred. I think it was because I was trying to depict Fleur as distinctly non-human that my art shifted away from that more realistic style. Fleur, and my other figures, became very tall and slender. The anime DNA is still there though. For a long time, I felt the lying-down picture of Fleur was my best work.
2008
Tumblr media
(Revya and Gig from Soul Nomad / my attempts at being “abstract” / OC / OC)
This was the year of Soul Nomad and, towards the end, Tales of the Abyss. Unsurprisingly, the anime influences start moving back to the fore. The eyes are becoming larger again, the features a bit more angular and stylized, mouths are shrinking. I'm still desperately trying to figure out markers and wondering why it's so darn hard (I don't try to educate myself, I just flail), but I was proud of that blue OC picture. It made me feel like I was getting somewhere. 2008 is when I started my deviantART gallery, right when everyone else was moving on to Tumblr.
2009
Tumblr media
(teacup lady / Persona 4 noir-style comic / Revya / OC)
Then Persona 4 hit. Shigenori Soejima was a huge influence in this period, especially in eyes and faces. Pupils, chins, and jawlines shrink, eyelashes are sparse and stylized, noses are simplified. 2008 and 2009 are about as pure anime as I've ever gotten. Meanwhile, I'm really exited about my dA gallery and trying lots of different combinations of media. I'm super active on dA and FFN at this point, writing Elysion and then a slew of shorter Persona fics.
2010
Tumblr media
(Minako from Persona 3: Portable / concept-art-version Minako / lady with dragon ferret thing / other lady with dragon ferret thing)
I'm still drawing with a lot of Soejima influences. Additionally, bodies are becoming even longer, taller, thinner, and bendier. Some of them look absurd to me now. On the other hand, a lot of pictures from this period have a nice elegance to them. I was still using colored pencils a fair bit, but more clumsy markers are showing up. Persona 3: Portable came out, and this is when I was writing Death and Ker.
2011
Tumblr media
(mask lady / hat lady / Archaya, Duphaston, and Iryth from Eternal Poison / symbolic autumn lady and her winter baby)
Midway through this year, I hit a breakthrough when I got my first set of Copics – and skin tones, no less. Even though I was still flailing, I was so thrilled with my results. That Eternal Poison picture left me enormously proud, as did the mother and child one. My style hasn't changed all that much, but it's starting to feel less extreme. The focus on big eyes and tiny little mouths remains.
2012
Tumblr media
(Elza from Suikoden 2 / Daryl and Setzer from Final Fantasy 6 / Killey and Lorelai from Suikoden 2 / Lyssa, Greek goddess of madness)
This is the year of Elza. Lots of delicate sketches of this lovely scarred lady, and lots of colored pictures too. I've definitely shifted away from pencils towards markers. The Daryl and Setzer one was an attempt to use both, and I was very happy with it. These pictures show their age, but there's still a lot here I like. Mouths are larger too. However, my online activity was starting to lag.
2013
Tumblr media
(Rydia from Final Fantasy 4 / Nia from Infinite Space / the prophet and Schala / Argos and Io from Greek mythology)
The mid-2010s weren't entirely great for me, marked with a lot of frustration and discontent. And that definitely carried over to my art, making me feel very disappointed with myself. There was lots of marker work this year. Probably the standout picture is Argos and Io. This is also when I played through all three routes of Fate/Extra, and my art was suddenly full of Hakuno and Emiya.
2014
Tumblr media
(Minako / butterfly lady / Marta and Tenebrae from Tales of Symphonia 2 / Elza)
Looking at it now, this was a good year. Lots of nice marker art. The butterfly one was a big step up for me in terms of coloring. The Marta and Tenebrae has a really cool stylized look to it. But I was becoming less enthusiastic about sharing my art with others. I started to post less and less.
2015
Tumblr media
(evil Hakuno and Emiya from the Fate series / Mitsuru from Persona 3 / half moon cookie lady / Hakuno)
I barely posted anything this year, though I was still drawing a ton. As far as making strides, this is one of my better years. Coloring will never be my strong suit, but it's a lot more fun, and it looks a lot better. It's almost entirely marker-work at this point. Despite my, er, angst, a lot of people are smiling this year.
2016
Tumblr media
(OC / doodle lady / Luna from Roman mythology / hair bow lady)
At this point, it's feeling too recent for me to really see what's changed. I did a fair bit of eraserless work. One problem I still have – and, yes, it involves coloring my pictures – is losing some of the image's personality after I've inked it and erased the initial pencil work. The picture's still there, but not as nuanced as it originally was. The results often feel stiff to me. Doing the first linework in ink, or not inking at all, allows me to keep that sensitive, spontaneous quality. Luna and the bow and doodle ladies were done without erasers. Another thing I did a lot this year was fill backgrounds with busy shapes and colors, which is a trend I’m still following today.
2017
Tumblr media
(flapper and dog / Alcyone and Ceyx from Greek mythology / flower hair lady / Kida from Atlantis)
Not a good year. Not that the art is bad, there just isn't a lot of it, and what there is often isn't very finished. I was still mostly dark online, wondering if I should take down my dA gallery. Drawing and knowing I wasn't going to post something took off some of the pressure of my own expectations, but I was still unhappy.
2018
Tumblr media
(Altera from the Fate series / Elizabeth Bathory from the Fate series / OC / Aranea from Final Fantasy 15)
This was a really important year for me. I wrote a novel I'm really proud of, and it's done a lot to give me confidence and a sense of creative direction. I also decided that after New Years, I was going to start a Tumblr gallery...just as everyone who was still on the site was jumping off of it. Much of my 2018 work is still sketchy and unfinished, but I also think it's loosening up some. It feels less stiff than the stuff from the middle of the decade.
2019
Tumblr media
(Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn / medievaly lady / Red from Transistor / Red)
The year of Supergiant Games, which led me to focus more on bright saturated colors. It's really hard for me to analyze these objectively. Coloring is better? I worked more on details? I used my metallic gel pens a ton and did shape-cluttered backgrounds? These aren't new things, but I think they paid off okay. I'm more at peace with my level of ability, I've finished more complicated works, and I crawled out of my den and started posting regularly online again. So that's all good. Curious to see what the art looks like in twenty more years.

With episodes four and five’s plot of Mary and Yumeko teaming up to regain their humanity and lives,  I figured that now is a great time to drop a theory I have on two possible narrative theme elements of Kaegurui; The theme of power and freedom. Both episodes (including manga spoilers) and the ED provided me with more than enough evidence and clues to support these claims.  Hell, I’ll throw in some theories I have about Yumeko’s personality because why not.

The first phase of the ED opens with separate, close focus shots of Yumeko’s ass and bouncing breasts; branding Kakegurui as a series of near hyper sexuality. Next, we see Yumeko walking in the rain unprotected.  She doesn’t appear to mind the rain, or the problems it brings.  This tells us that Yumeko is carefree: She loves taking risks and finds comfort in being reckless.   In short, she’s  marches to the rhythm of her own beat.
Sakaya reflecting on Yumeko’s carefree spirit.
Sakaya reflecting on Yumeko’s carefree spirit.
Sakaya reflecting on Yumeko’s carefree spirit.
In the background, there is a peony flower –   the Japanese symbol of daring bravery and wealth.  People with bravery and wealth are powerful.  Yumeko is a brave girl; she’s not bothered by high risk stakes or manipulation by outside sources. In fact, she enjoys it.  To say she gains pleasure from it is a statement not far from the truth.  Hyakkaou itself is rich in wealth, bravery, and power.   Seeing the peony flowers in various Kakegurui manga covers and promotional materials is no coincidence in that sense.
The peony cycles through four colors: red, green, yellow-green, and purple.
In color theory, red is use for power.  Now, what are the Hyakkaou students gambling for? Status and power above all.  But, before you get the power, you must get the money. This leads us to the next color – green.
Green – most associated with money – and greed.  Money makes the world go round.  Money never sleeps like Wall Street.    If gambling is the backbone of  the school than money is  the lifeblood.  The student body is made up of the children of some of the richest and most powerful connected families of Japan.
Power is everything.  Money rules all.
‘You gotta  get the money first. Then when get the money,  you get the power.’ -Tony Monata, Scarface (1983 American film)
‘All my life I want money and power.’ -Kendrick Lamar, Backseat (2012 American hip-hop single)
Next is yellow-green.  We already analyze green, so let’s focus on yellow.  Yellow represents logic, analysis, and brain stimulation.  Gambling itself is a mental game; As you much analyze and read your opponent’s moves. Logic can greatly dictate the flow of a gambling match (if you’re extremely smart and/or know how to play the system that is).  Yellow can also represent joy and happiness – something Yumeko tend to indulge herself in a lot through gambling.
Finally the color purple.  Purple represents royalty, power, luxury, and nobility – four things in which the upper-class students either have obtained or inherited. The lower-class/livestock yearns for these four things they lack.  Purple is also a mysterious, yet beautiful color. This works with Yumeko, as we do not know neither her origins, nor background.  She’s also rather beautiful as her male peers were captivated by her beauty at first sight (and it’s implied Ryota has a crush on her based on her beauty).
This phase of the ED continues for a few bars of music, which builds up as the vocalist and instruments are layered in the melody.
There are quick, close focus shots of Yumeko’s chest, skirt, opened shirt, and finally, her lips.  The animation of her lips sync with the vocalist singing “tagitte shimau wa!, or, “I’m overflowing!” in English.
Tumblr media
Now, we’ve heard Yumeko say this line before in episode 2; as she gets aroused through gambling. Gambling excites Yumeko profoundly.  Perhaps a bit too much  however.
Tumblr media
From episode 2. Yumeko has issues.  Not Midari level issues.  But issues.
The ED transitions into phase two.  The peony flower has exploded into red pedals. The pedals start to rotate around Yumeko.  Now, remember that red means power. Who has the power in Hyakkaou? The student government has the power of course.   Now, could that possibly mean that Yumeko will break up the student council’s power game, and have them wrapped around her fingers as the series progress?
These lyrics of the ending theme seem to suggest so:
‘So have your way with their souls. Make them dance in the palm of your hand!’
Then again, this could also be a reference to how the student council control the lower class; removing their humanity, treating them as livestock, and dictating their lives through the Life Schedule Plan (more on that later).
After that, Yumeko tosses her blazer aside carelessly; her dress shirt open, revealing her cleavage and pink bra.  Her arms are spread slightly.  She walks with fluidity as she sways her hips back and forth, still soaked by the rain.  Liberated from her “restrains” (the blazer and buttoned shirts), she wears a wide smile; As if she’s happy that she can be free.  Perhaps this symbolize that in the future, she’ll finally be happy that she can be her true self – a fearless, limitless gambler.
Tumblr media
There’s a bar of rest in the music, followed by an upskirt shot from the ground up.  The downbeat directs us to the final phase. Yumeko’s arms and hair are raised high above her head. She walks with more confidence in each step.  Multiple lights sync with the percussion, alternating between blue and pink at each bar.  Five or six peony flowers appear in the background, each rotating like roulette wheels while the pedals of the original peony still dance around Yumeko.
Tumblr media
The imagery increases with intensity, working in synergy with the music’s crescendo. The animation transitions to a set of poker chips ascending; This might hint that Yumeko will raise above the ranks of Hyakkou and the student government.
Tumblr media
Finally, the ED ends with a focus shot of the Yumeko’s face. It’s blushed, her lips are parted, and her hair a mess. She appears she just been pleasured sexually for some odd reason (sex sells I guess).  Also, note how her hair are red –  just like the peony pedals.   Perhaps she gains power and triumph over the student government overtime.  Maybe I’m thinking way too deep into the shot, but whatever.
Tumblr media
By analyzing the ED, I’ve theorized two the possible themes of Kakegurui are freedom and power.
Freedom plays a large role in the series. Students yearning to free themselves from their “pet” and “livestock” statues,  as well as debts they owe to others.  We first see this through Ryota and Mary’s game from the first episode. Of course, Ryota lost to Mary and became her pet as a result.
Tumblr media
Later, after her defeat against Yumeko, Mary is force to surrender her life, and live the life that the student council crafted for her: the Life Schedule Plan (getting married to a senator, baring his children, etc.).
She enters a debt forgiveness gambling match with Yumeko (also suffering the same fate as Mary).  The two join forces to lower their debt, thus one step closer in retaining their humanity and freedom.  During this match, we’re introduced to Nanami, a young girl reduced to livestock status.  She’s  forced to partner up with minor villain Kiwatari.  After realizing  that she was coerced (as well as emotionally and mentally abused) into working for Kiwatari, Yumeko convinces Nanami to grow a backbone, fight for herself, and free herself from Kiwatari.  Despite losing the match (coming in second place) and still having debt, Nanami gains a sense of freedom and confidence for herself.
As for the theme of power, it’s quite obvious.  From episode 1 to the recent episode 5 (and the manga of course), power and status is played heavily in the series.  Mary has power over Ryota for a time.  Yumeko displays her power through extreme wit and intelligence.  Students with status and money have power over the pets.  The student government (made up of high ranking gamblers and students with political and financial connections) rule the school through their power.  We see the fincinal status and connection with Itsuki (as her dad is the CEO of a toy company) and the political pull  and ruling of the current ruthless  Kirari Momobami.
Tumblr media
Power is everything in Hyakkaou.
‘No one man should have all that power.’
–Kanye West, Power (2010 hip-hop single)
How did you like my analysis and theories?  Think I’m spot on or am I’m just overthinking an ED and the music?  I’m excited how things will play out in both the manga nad anime, as things are starting to get wild in episode 5.  I’ve yet to read the manga but I heard from a friend that it’s nuts.  Let me know what you think in the comments!

Mother’s Basement analysis of the OP of Kakegurui.  Although this further inspired me to do this ED analysis, I wasn’t initially inspired by the video.  I was more inspired by Anime Live Reaction analysis of  Dragon Ball Super ED 7 to analyze anime lyrics and ED.
Does Kakegurui's ED hold clues to the series's themes, Yumeko's personality, and progression? With episodes four and five’s plot of Mary and Yumeko teaming up to regain their humanity and lives,  I figured that now is a great time to drop a theory I have on two possible narrative theme elements of Kaegurui; The theme of power and freedom.

Gender: woman, she/her pronouns
Star Sign: Virgo (god freakin dammit)
Height: 5′4.5″/164cm (i only just found out im a half-inch taller than i thought, wheeeee!)
Sexual Orientation: Lesbean :3
Hogwart’s House: Hufflepuff. I am utterly ruled by my emotions.
Favorite Color: Green, really vibrant/deep reds, sometimes yellow/purple
Favorite Animal: Giraffes. They are close to my heart.
Average Hours of Sleep: Uhhhhh it’s always either 2~4 hours or 14 hrs, no in between
Cat or Dog Person: Dog, but only because I have one, and she’s the cutest teeny floof ever
Favorite Fictional Characters: Sameen Shaw, or “Wolfpuppy Shaw” as I like to call her, Leliana and Isabela from Dragon Age, Helena from Orphan Black, Laura Kinney/X-23 (my DAUGHTER), Jubilation “Jubilee” Lee (thank you for showing lil me that an East Asian girl can absolutely be an X-man), Jack and Kasumi Goto from Mass Effect, Tiffany Aching from the Discworld universe, Raven (the version of her from the old Teen Titans cartoon that everyone misses), Elektra Natchios, Daredevil, Spider-man, John Constantine, Death of the Endless, Rosa Diaz, Korra, Faith and Bloody Mary from The Wolf Among Us, Shego (the Original Lesbian Cartoon Crush), am I missing someone.... probably. Also i love my ocs but im not gonna list them here because a) that would feel a lil too self-absorbed and b) i can’t pick favorites!!! that’s not fair to them!!! (also, if u look carefully at least half of the women on this list are angry and/or violent.... im p sure i have a type)
# of blankets I sleep with: 1. But a really thick one.
Fav Singer/Band: Nightwish, Halestorm, In This Moment, Panic! At The Disco, Joan Jett (in every single band she’s ever been in), Lady Gaga, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Portishead, Two Steps From Hell... yup, those are the main ones. Also, any and all music from The Phantom of the Opera, I’m fucking stuck on that musical and have been since I was 11.
Dream Trip: Uuuuuhhhh not... going anywhere?? I mean I don’t really get a lot of pleasure being in a new place necessarily unless I like who I’m with-- and I’ve done most of my traveling with my family, so I guess that may have soured that particular type of experience for me woop. But I’m sure that if I went travelling with friends or a loved one, I would be okay with going literally anywhere.
When was this blog created: What the SHIT I just found out I made this blog in December 2010??? I think it was because some classmate caught me drawing in class and invited me to contribute fashion sketches (I don’t know why but i was into clothing/costume design back then) to her and a bunch of other girls’ collaborative fancy schmancy fashion-oriented tumblr blog.... but being the petty binch I am, I needed to have my own blog so I could make sure people knew which content was coming from me and only me lol. I hate drawing clothes these days, I had totally forgotten about my fashion phase until just now...
When did your blog reach its peak: Uuuuhhhhhhhh I don’t know, I don’t keep very good track of followers and notes and stuff? I only do that for my art blog because honestly i’m a slut for validation on original content and most of my original content goes there. For this blog I guess the peak was that period from like 2011 to 2013 where I had totally forgotten I had a tumblr at all and the account was simply dead lol
I tag @too-much-gayhem, @aliencadaver, @hardinginhightown, @music-in-the-bell-jar, @biancient, @finnglas, @ssvnormandysr-1, @theitalianscrub, @bearu, @blackthorn-and-iron, @meeralith, @beanbab, @vyrthur.... ok is there a limit to how many people you’re allowed to tag because i don’t know when i’m supposed to stop?? And if I missed anyone feel free to just say I tagged you, also this isn’t mandatory at all and you can totally ignore it if you want (esp if you’ve already been tagged oops)
Have a nice day/night everyone!

Nicknamed ‘Chinese Aegis’, the Type 052C (NATO reporting name: Luyang-II class) destroyers were the first truly multirole and highly capable, modern indigenous destroyers introduced by the PLA Navy. With a multifunctional active phased array radar, 48 VLS-launched SAM, and eight long-range anti-ship cruise missile (ASCMs), the destroyers are believed to be comparable in general performance and capability to the U.S. Arleigh Burke class and Japanese Kongo class DDG.
Programme
The PLA Navy began to develop the concept of an air defence guided missile destroyer as the follow-on of Type 052 Luhu class in the early 1990s. However, delays in the development of the HHQ-9 SAM and phased array 3D air search radar led to Type 052B (Luyang class) being incorporated with Russian-built SAM and air search radar systems as a stopgap. The indigenous HHQ-9 SAM and Type 346 phased array radar finally became available in the early 2000s, and were incorporated onto the improved Type 052C destroyer.
Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard began to build the Type 052C air defence missile destroyer in late 2002. The destroyer shared the same hull design as its predecessor Type 052B, but was fitted with completely indigenous weapon systems and sensors. The first-of-class DDG-170 Lanzhou was laid down in late 2002 and launched on 29 April 2003. Sea trial began in late 2003 and the destroyer was commissioned in July 2004. The second hull, DDG-171 Haikou was launched on 30 October 2003 and was commissioned in 2005. Both vessels are deployed by the PLA Navy South Sea Fleet.
For the next few years the Type 052C production halted as Jiangnan Shipyard relocated its operation from its original location south of central Shanghai to a new site on Changxing Island, in the mouth of the Yangtze River to the north of urban China. The third-of-class, DDG-150 Changchun, was launched in October 2010. Within the next three years, three more hulls were launched before the production finally stopped and was succeeded by the improved Type 052D (Luyang-III class) destroyer. The second batch of four hulls have been deployed by the PLA Navy East Sea Fleet.
Type 052C represented a significant development in China’s effort to produce a ‘blue-water’ navy capable of operating in deep waters of open oceans. It was also the first destroyer to have been build in a large number since the 1980s, ending the PLA Navy’s prolonged period of building different destroyer classes in small quantities to experiment with the various designs and technologies. The destroyers were designed primarily to fit the fleet air defence role with their powerful air-defence missiles and active phased array radar, but also possess decent anti-ship and anti-submarine capabilities.
Type 052’s size and displacement were limited by its two underpowered Ukrainian DA80 gas turbines, each rated at 32,600 hp (24 MW), in comparison with the four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines each generating 26,250 hp (20 MW) on the Arleigh Burke class. This in turn limits the height of the bridge to avoid overturning the vessel, which means that the four air search radar arrays could not be fitted at an ideal height in order to maximise their performance. To minimise the impact on the functioning of the radar as a result of the height limit, a gap had to be added on the bulwarks on both sides of the vessel.
Missiles
A total of 48 indigenous HHQ-9 air defence missiles are housed in eight 6-cell vertical launch systems (VLS). Unlike the Russian-style revolver VLS, Type 052C’s VLS is fixed with each launch cell having its own lid. The missile system utilises a ‘cold launch’ method, with the missile first ejected from the launch tube, and then igniting its rocket engine at low altitude. This launch method avoids the complex flame and gas exhausting pipes on the Western-style ‘hot launch’ VLS, and also decreases damage to the ship structure caused by the rocket motor blast.
The HHQ-9 is the naval variant of the land-based HQ-9 surface-to-air missile system developed in the 1990s. The missile may have adopted some Russian S-300 rocket motor and control technologies, with a “Track via Missile” (TVM) guidance system developed from the U.S. Patriot missile technology. The missile is housed inside a cylinder shape container, which is placed inside the VLS, and is guided by the destroyer’s H/LJG346 (Type 346) phased array search and targeting radar.
The destroyer is armed with eight YJ-62 (C-602) ASCMs carried inside a cylinder-shape launcher (two 4-cell launchers at the mid-ship). The missiles are guided by the Mineral-ME (NATO reporting name: ‘Band Stand’) radar (or its Chinese copy Type 366) installed on top of the bridge and a ‘Light Bulb’ datalink forward of the hanger. The YJ-62 uses strap-down inertial guidance coupled with GPS, and active radar for the terminal phase. The missile has a stated range of 280 km, with the missile flying at an altitude of 30 m during the cruise phase of an engagement. In the terminal phase, the missile descends 7—10 m. The active radar seeker has an acquisition range of up to 40 km.
Guns
The main gun on the bow deck is an indigenous H/PJ-87 single-barrel 100-mm gun developed by 713 Institute. Resembling the French Creusot-Loire T100C in design, the gun can be used against both surface targets and air targets such as aircraft and low speed missile, with a maximum rate of fire of 90 rounds/min. The gun can be operated in fully automatic mode from the radar control system, from the shipborne optical sighting system, or laid manually.
For short-range air defence, the destroyer is equipped with two (one front, one rear) seven-barrel 30-mm Type 730 CIWS. The weapon system has a maximum rate of fire of 4,600—5,800 rounds/min and a maximum range of 3 km. Each CIWS has its own independent power-supply, as well as a Type 347G (EFR-1) fire-control radar (6 km detection range against airborne targets of RCS 0.1m2) and an electro-optic director (5—6 km tracking range).
Anti-Submarine Warfare
Type 052C has two triple 324-mm torpedo launchers (B.515S copy) for the Yu-7 (Mk-46 Mod 1) active/passive acoustic-homing anti-submarine torpedoes. The Yu-7 carries a 45 kg warhead and has a maximum range of 7.3 km and a maximum speed of 28 knots. The depth of search/attack is 6—400 m.
The four Type 726-4 18-barrel (3×6 arrangement) chaff/decoy launchers on the aft deck can also be used to fire ASW rockets if necessary.
Command and Control
A destroyer’s overall air defence, surface strike, and antisubmarine warfare (ASW) capabilities will largely depend on how well different weapon systems and sensors are integrated together by the combat system. Most previous Chinese warships use the command and control system derived from the French Thomson-CSF TAVITAC, but Type 052C is equipped with a newly developed system with improved processing power to engage anti-ship missile threats.
Although the detailed information on the combat system of the Type 052C is unknown, it is likely that the system will comprise the multifunction phased array radar system, command and decision system, battlefield display system, and weapon control system. The command and decision system receives data from ship sensors and provides command, control and threat assessment. The weapon control system receives engagement instruction from the command and decision system, selects weapons and interfaces with the weapon fire control systems.
In together with its long-range air defence missile and close-in weapon system (CIWS), Type 052C is the first Chinese-made surface combatant with a true fleet air defence capability. The combat system will ensure that the ship can engage multiple air targets such as sea-skimming missile and aircraft simultaneously. The ship might also be able to transmit combat information to other ships and aircraft via datalink and satellite communications to form a maritime combat network.
Phased Array Radar
Type 052C is fitted with the H/LJG346 (Type 346, NATO reporting name: ‘Dragon Eye’) multifunctional radar system developed by Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology (CETC 14 Institute). The concept of the radar was first conceived in 1989 but its engineering development only began in 1995 after being chosen by the PLA Navy as the preferred air search radar for its air defence destroyer.
The radar features four large active phased array radar (APAR) arrays installed on the destroyer’s bridge, each consisting of 5,000 S-band transceiver modules and a C-band SAM guidance module, housed inside rectangle-shaped module. The radar module employs an air-cooling system, with the module cover in a curved shape to allow sufficient airflow in the central part of the module where the most heat is generated by the radar transceivers.
Other Sensors
Other sensors onboard Type 052C include:
Type 517H-1 (NATO reporting name: ‘Knife Rest’) long-range 2D air search radar;
Russian MR331 Mineral-ME (NATO reporting name: ‘Band Stand’) for AShM fire-control;
Indigenous Type 344 (MR34) radar for main gun fire-control;
Indigenous Type 364 (SR64) surface search radar;
Two Type 347G (EFR-1, NATO reporting name: ‘Rice Lamp’) fire-control radar for the Type 730 CIWS;
A hull-mounted H/SJD-9 medium-frequency sonar for active/passive search and attack.
Aviation
The destroyer’s stern hangar accommodates one Kamov Ka-28 (NATO codename: Helix) antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. Carrying various weapons including torpedoes and deep charges, the helicopter can operate in all weather conditions up to 200 km from the host ship. Alternatively, the destroyer can carry an indigenous Z-9C helicopter.
Propulsion
Type 052C’s propulsion is in the form of CODOG, consisting of two Ukraine-made DA80/DN80 gas turbines each rated at 32,600 hp (24 MW) and two Shaanxi diesels (Chinese copy of the MTU 20V956TB92) each rated at 8,840hp (6.5 MW), giving a maximum speed of 29 knots.
