I mentioned that I saw the Necron ending for Battlefleet Gothic Armada II the other day, and it was niggling at me that the music during the cinematic reminded me of something. Eventually, I realised that it was Woland’s Theme, from the 2005 Russian miniseries adaptation of The Master & Margarita:
youtube
Which is, as you can see, a boss-ass piece of music.
So, for Halloween, I decided that I’d watch back through said miniseries. Given, you know, the plot of the devil and his entourage descending on a city, and the woman and her lover caught in the middle of it. It seemed suitable for the occasion. Heh.
It is, happily, available on youtube with subtitles, so I didn’t have to go far. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy it. Mostly the Moscow sections, to be fair. Koroviev is definitely my favourite character. And Margarita herself, the ball sequence in episode 7/8 is excellent.
Apparently there’s a new movie adaptation out this year? I might have to find that. In the meantime, though, I have the book upstairs somewhere, I’ll definitely have to dig it out again.

Because it's just like. Darcy did everything Lizzy ever told him to, yknow? He asked how she thought people should kindle affection and she said dancing, so then he asked her to dance. She asked what he qualifies as an accomplished woman, he looked at her and the book she was reading, and said a well read woman. She said he should talk while they're dancing, so he asked about her and her sisters going to Merryton. She told him he should practice talking to people he's not already familiar with, so he came over and visited her the very next day. You know??? Do you see???? He has been shouting from the very start that he cares for her, in his own way, just as Jane shouted her love to Bingley, in her own way. And then when she was visiting Rosings and Lady Catherine de Bourgh, his own aunt, was being obnoxious and rude to her, he felt the shame of having undesirable connections just as she had in the beginning. Do you see it!!!! Mr Darcy has been ardently in love with her from the very beginning, and he's been missing the parallels between their lives the whole time!!! He's so pathetic and sopping wet it hurts!!!

(this isn't a question about the best p&p adaptation ever, it is simply which you prefer OUT OF THESE TWO OPTIONS since they are the two most commonly talked about and compared!!)

I was gonna make a post about how I do sometimes really hate the "copy pasting art from a previous panel" trick because some artists really overuse it but obviously its not always a bad thing and is a pretty reasonable cost-saving measure that could also be utilized effectively for like comedy beats and such (and other things but I feel like it works best when used for comedy). But like that is kind of a hard thing to complain about without just sounding like a asshole because of how common of a trick it is and why it generally gets used etc etc.
Anyway heres this page from Vigilante 2005

It’s not that I don’t like Pride and Prejudice (2005), I do. I just cannot view it as something akin to what I really think of when I hear the name Pride and Prejudice - which is the 1995 miniseries. (No, I don’t think about the book either; I only read it years later. In my defense, I was five when I first saw the miniseries, so it would have been a little hard to read the book then!)
It’s true, I’ve never liked Keira Knightley as an actress and that certainly colors my dissatisfaction. No matter what, there is something a bit too sly about her portrayal. A bit too modern. And so the movie’s main core never feels quite right to me. Darcy’s distance-as-shyness also never felt quite warm enough to me. I don’t know.
I’ve seen the movie half a dozen times or so, but I haven’t rewatched it in at least a decade. On the other hand, I’ve rewatched the miniseries at least a dozen times in the past five years alone. It’s my “eternal comfort watch”, the show that always manages to show me something new that I missed and provide new nuances. Might the film do the same if I watched it today, now that I’m also a more mature adult (and have slightly different aesthetic tastes than I had as a teenager)? Maybe! But the more I think of it, the more I find myself accepting that it’s just not the movie of my heart the way it is for others (especially on this site).
I see the beautiful gifsets and they might make smile and occasionally I’ll reblog one that notices a new, nice scene or moment, but the experience feels flat. I am watching a set piece without the heart and soul in place. It’s always pretty and in just the right way, but there is less empty space for things to... breathe. To exist without making an aesthetic, obvious statement. And to feel warm and alive.
This post doesn’t really have a point, I guess. I’m just a little melancholic that I can’t share in the love of the movie as much as everyone around me. But I’ll always have the miniseries!

when you start reading (listening to audiobooks) classic books for fun without the shadow of high school and the pressure to bullshit an essay and you are free to ponder the themes and narratives and language of those books at your own pace and can finally understand that goddamn that was a pretty good book and life is good actually
