Gourmet bakery in a move to diversify its commercial base bought the struggling Jaag Tv in 2016 with 1.5B rupees, launhed with the name, G News Network across Pakistan in 2018. The bakery has more than 100 outlets in multiple cities of Punjab along with many restaurants and 5000+ employees. It was started by Muhammad Nawaz Chatta in 1991. Gourmet also has a stake in pharmacies and planned to work on smartphones with a Chinese company which could not materialize. It acquired 12% stake in the Silk Bank in 2015 and has catered to avenues of magazine production as well as furniture.

Thunderbolt is the brand name of a civil defense siren made by Federal Signal from like 1950 to 1987. They were originally for in case the soviets nuked us so school kids could get under their desks and get vaporized that way lol. They were air-raid sirens, essentially. Luckily we never had to use them as such.

They started using CD sirens for tornado warnings in the 70s when the advent of Doppler radar made detecting tornadoes BEFORE they hit a municipality possible. Both Doppler radar and sirens reduced tornado deaths *dramatically*. My town in central IL had a whole system of extremely creepy sounding dual-tone Thunderbolts. There was one next to my school growing up in the 90s and it scared the absolute shit out of me every month when they tested it, but since I've got the autismo I sort of became fascinated with them lol.

Over the years they've gradually replaced them with their successors, the 2001 SRN-B and the 2001-130. They don't look or sound near as cool though, basically a big white megaphone on a pole with a high pitched sort of whiny sounding single tone. You can't hear them as good either unless you're right next to one, so I would have preferred they refurbished the tbolts but what do I know. I don't work for the city or EMS, there's probably some new security features on the new ones. When I was a kid someone figured out the DTMF tones that set off the old system and fucked with the whole town all night, so they probably want to prevent that from happening again.

Anyway I found out last night that the other remaining Thunderbolt on the old First National Bank building has been recently decommissioned so the Snyder Hall tbolt is, in fact, the last one standing. I imagine when they eventually tear down the rest of the six pack dorms it'll meet it's end and I'll be sad when that happens. They're interesting machines IMO with a lot of kinda morbid history behind them that no one really thinks or talks about (until something goes wrong with them that is).

I could talk about sirens all day so feel free to ask away, I know stuff about other makes and models too but Thunderbolts are far and away my favorite based on intimidation factor and nostalgia. I'm also into cold war history in general and things like fall out shelters, duck and cover drills, etc. And tornadoes! I recently started SKYWARN spotter training and I'm pretty excited. Although I don't think we're ever gonna get rain again let alone thunderstorms.

One of the dorms at work has 1 of the 2 remaining thunderbolt sirens in this town on the roof and right now I have keycard access so I’m wondering if I could get up there and have a look lmao
